We fantasise about pleasantly warm afternoons, sun-kissed skin and soft-focus floaty romantic florals, but sometimes we get stuck with days of grey drizzle. That’s why it’s important to make the most of the opportunities that our surroundings offer. There’s always somewhere interesting to go, whether it’s heading out for a meal, visiting a farm shop, exploring the countryside, looking at the fresh crop of street art that the NUART festival will bring, going to a Trend event, updating your look or just indulging in a bit of shopping. Whatever the weather, spring brings the chance to grow and reinvent ourselves. Take up a new sport or creative activity, head outdoors with the kids or update your home or garden with a few new plants or a pot of paint. The stagnation of winter is over and you’ll find plenty of inspiration in this issue. It’s time to put forth new shoots!

Good news for those who hate heels. This season, it’s all about flats and trainers, though the trend is far removed from anything that could be considered a sensible shoe. Pile on the glitz with embroidery, metallics and a rainbow of colour. The more your shoes look like something a five year old playing at being a princess dreamt up, the better. Upmarket versions tend more towards evening sophistication, with some elegant beading on show. Even Monaco’s Prince Albert took to the red carpet in a tuxedo and white trainers and if it’s good enough for royalty….

Summer’s menswear collections have seen designers revamp the traditional Parisian and Breton stripe with bold colours and variegated, vertical stripes created impact on the catwalk. You’ll find stripes everywhere from formal tailoring to casual t-shirts and knitwear. They work perfectly in both formal and casual situations and vertical stripes can create the illusion that you’re taller and slimmer that you actually are, making this wardrobe staple suitable for all shapes and sizes. Stick to one key piece for an easy wardrobe update. Pairing stripes with stripes gives an edgier look, but unless this is a shirt and suit look, there’s a danger people may assume you’re wearing your pyjamas.

MEET EVELINA STRIPEIKYTE OF THE CRAFTSMAN COMPANY I was born and raised in Lithuania in a small village. My parents and little sister still live there and our home stands in a forest, surrounded by nature. My parents have a greenhouse and grow vegetables, so food was a family affair, prepared from scratch. Growing up, my mum was always making bread at home - her poppy seed bread was my favourite. One day I decided that I was going to make it by myself, so I did. I came to Scotland to study economics, but it wasn’t for me. I found a job as a kitchen porter because food has always been my passion. I found I had a natural flair for cookery and that’s how I became a chef. My style of cooking is seasonal, wholesome, homely and simple yet refined. As a chef, I’m constantly learning new things, new flavours, dishes, cultures and ideas. I love the freedom to be creative and the positive reaction when people try your food for the very first time. When I am not working, I like to relax and unwind by travelling to scenic places with my photographer partner Tom. I run my own cookery blog and make cakes for birthdays and weddings. I also enjoy walking Coco, my pet rabbit. I dream of opening my own restaurant one day and I like the idea of writing a book so that I can publish my own recipes and establish myself as a well known and versatile chef.

TOMATO & PINEAPPLE SOUP WITH SMOKED DUCK INGREDIENTS (Serves 5) 6 beef tomatoes 1 Spanish onion (finely chopped) 1 clove of garlic (minced) 400g fresh pineapple Thyme leaves from 2 springs 1l vegetable stock 3 tbsp. maple syrup 5 tbsp. olive oil 1 smoked duck breast Salt & freshly ground pepper to taste METHOD Put the tomatoes in a bowl and add boiling water to cover. After 3 minutes remove tomatoes from the boiling water, with a spoon, place them in ice cold water and then remove the skin. Chop the tomatoes and pineapple, place them on a baking tray, add salt, 3 tbsp. olive oil and thyme; roast it for 12 mins at 170oC. Cook the onion and garlic in 2tbsp oil until softened, then add stock, stir in roasted tomatoes and pineapple and simmer for 15 minutes. Pour the soup into a food processor, add seasoning and blend until smooth. Serve with a couple of slices of pan-fried smoked duck.

This delightful, newly extended Scandi-rustic café and shop sits on the Finzean Estate which has been in the Farquharson family for over 400 years and covers around 10,000 acres of hill and arable land. Head for Banchory, then Strachan and you’ll find the way.

Castleton lies just off the A90 before Laurencekirk and is well signposted. It’s is known for producing deliciously juicy soft fruit. Last year they picked and packed 6.5 million punnets of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cherries.

The farm shop is particularly well stocked, with organic breads, local honeycomb, a great veg selection and an irresistible selection of gourmet treats you won’t find elsewhere. On the gift side, you’ll find books, art, toys, presents and a fabulous selection of unusual greetings cards.

It’s a family business that prides itself on sourcing many ingredients directly from local farmers and fishermen to create hearty home-cooked favourites. The jumbo-sized cakes look amazing and the menu balances traditional favourites with interesting accompaniments and inspired twists. There are daily specials, but we opted for a substantial and deliciously-dressed grilled goat’s cheese salad and a bowl of spiced chicken noodle soup, which was packed with flavour and came with a huge slice of home baked bread on the side. The scones and tray bakes are particularly tasty.

The Tin Coo lies on a back road in Hillside near Portlethen and is part of the Groat family’s farm at Devenick Dairy, the award-winning local cheese makers. It’s been carefully designed to wrap round the milking shed and butchery, so you can watch the cows being milked at 4pm or see how your brisket is rolled. It’s a true farm to fork family business.

The shop and café are at the heart of the community, even hosting the visiting post office and pre-ordered newspapers. They also do hampers and you can even order your entire Christmas menu for collection. We can recommend the afternoon tea, which comes on a three tier cake stand, filled with gorgeous smoked salmon and egg and cress sandwiches, warm scones and pancakes with jam, cream and curls of butter, topped off with some scrumptious mini cakes. One of Finzean’s regulars cycles out from Aberdeen three times a week. He’s not daft!

The farm shop is split between gifts and food, with some great prepared meals and frozen fruits and a strong deli section. There’s a large play area outside and they also offer a hamper service and a catering collect service.

With a new chef and manager, both with a fine dining background, the menu has been revamped and there are some nice touches like a pre-bookable afternoon tea served on a miniature picnic table. The triple cheese macaroni proved rich and filling, breakfasts range from granola to fried platefuls and the cheesecake is always worth saving space for. Even the jam and cream are home made. There’s a good children’s menu and an indoor soft play area. As you’d expect, the meat counter and cheese section in the small shop are excellent. Where else will you find black pudding and strawberry jam sausages or fresh spring cheese with pickle?

he Silver Darling has had a complete transformation. Situated in the old Customs House at the mouth of Aberdeen Harbour, the well-regarded restaurant has recently become part of the McGinty’s Group, who own the popular No.10 Bar & Restaurant, McGinty’s Meal An’Ale, The Stag, The Ferryhill House Hotel and The Fourmile. t’s never easy to encourage kids to try healthier foods, especially when they think broccoli is the work of the devil! Be inventive and a little devious. Try using unusual serving dishes, wrapping unloved foods in a parcel or making it part of a story. Don’t make them eat something or their resistance will grow. Soup’s often a good way to introduce a new ingredient especially with a novelty accompaniment of popcorn. Another idea is to serve smaller portions of grown up food so that they can copy Mum and Dad.

Finally, it’s good to have the kids involved in the selection and purchasing of food, so that they can get excited about meals over the coming week, or even better - grow your own veg and let them help harvest it!

Purple donation to CLAN John Willox Kitchen Design have donated the profit from the sale of one of their kitchens to CLAN Cancer Support in Aberdeen. Scottish furniture maker launches CALA captures a woodworking moment in time courses A time capsule giving those in the future a snapshot of life in Bridge of Don in 2018 has been buried to celebrate the brand new Grandhome community ahead of its first residents moving in next month. WHEN TALKING WITH A CLIENT LAST WEEK ABOUT A NEW PLANTING SCHEME WE LANDED ON THE SUBJECT OF ‘PIERIS’.

e described this genus as being “very Aberdeen” and I know what he means because you do see them in very many gardens, however it is little surprise that this easy-to-grow, evergreen has been so popular through the years... for these very reasons they are easy to grow and evergreen! This genus of seven species is originally a high-altitude plant from mountain ranges across southern and eastern Asia and eastern North America but they will thrive in the UK, given the right conditions and they certainly seem to like Aberdeen. It is an ideal shrub in many ways, giving cover all year round, providing several months of interest and colour that starts

around March when the new growth is typically bright red. The flowers are bell-shaped, long white or pink and arranged in racemes, some of which are scented. They are tolerant of semi-shade, and ideal for a woodland border. Although fully hardy, pieris should be planted away from the morning sun because the young red growth can be scorched after a frosty night. Pieris do not require pruning. If pruning is required to tidy up any spindly branches or spent flowers it is best to prune in late spring after flowering. They do tend to get ‘leggy’ if grown

in overly moist soils. One essential requirement when growing any variety of pieris is for acid soil and if feeding, use an ericaceous feed only. Scotland’s gardens open for you! Initial approval for new facilities at Foresterhill Work on the £163 million project to deliver the new Baird Family Hospital and ANCHOR Centre in 2021, in Aberdeen, took a major step forwards on 1 February 2018. The NHS Grampian Board approved the outline business case for the two facilities, a

hen people think of Japanese food, the first thought that usually comes to mind is the stereotypical sushi. This isn’t hugely surprising, as sushi is one of Japan’s flagship cultural exports; however there is a lot more to Japanese cuisine, which is naturally nutritious, and based around superfresh, seasonal products. High street chains have done much to popularise a sushi culture, making it the poster boy of Japanese cuisine. But does that mean it’s the only authentic style out there? John Jones, director and head chef of Yatai - a casual Japanese restaurant in Aberdeen, has an interesting viewpoint on that age old culinary debate of what is deemed “authentic”. The word itself? We all know that it means genuine, real and true. When applied to food however, that definition can become blurred. John explains: ‘Let’s start with our own, infamous cuisine here in Scotland.

‘Haggis is a sheep’s stomach stuffed with unwanted bits of sheep, oatmeal, onions and lots of black pepper. There is no proof of where it came from food historians have different ideas of origin; some that it came from England in the 14th century, others that it was from Roman times. ‘To my mind, when it comes to authenticity, everything is constantly changing. No chef will intentionally make the same dish in exactly the same way as another chef making the same style of food, otherwise there is no point in having your own restaurant.’ John has been cooking Japanese food for nearly 20 years now. He always tries to follow the Japanese cuisine traditions of eat fresh, eat seasonal and eat local, with Yatai growing a lot of their own produce. John said: ‘As I see it, it is not the actual ingredients that make Japanese food “authentic”, but the philosophy behind it, and this is what I try to stay true to.’

New Captain for Moxy Aberdeen Thanks to an investment of over £1.2million, Banchory Lodge has been awarded 4-star status by VisitScotland. In their report, the judges highlighted the friendly service, refurbishment and quality of the food. At the same time VisitScotland confirmed The Lodge would also receive a ‘Taste Our Best’ award which recognises the hotel’s commitment to sourcing and promoting Scottish produce. If you’re looking for a short city break, then, until recently, Belfast probably wouldn’t have been the first place to come to mind.

ectarianism and miserable, shouty politicians don’t pull in the tourists. Luckily, Belfast has undergone a cultural transformation since the Peace Agreement and is now an optimistic, vibrant and welcoming city, surrounded by lush green countryside, natural wonders and some superb golf courses. It may not have Amsterdam’s wealth of art galleries and laid-back vibe, nor Paris’s high-end design districts and superficial romanticism, but Belfast offers some great hotels, amazing restaurants and interesting attractions. There are direct flights from Aberdeen International Airport to Belfast City, or, if you’re in the mood for a road trip, you can drive down to Cairnryan, then take a ferry across to either

Belfast or Larne. This can be more expensive than flying, but saves hiring a car if you intend exploring beyond the city. Many of the visitor attractions focus on the city’s past, with Crumlin Road Gaol now offering tours. Several of the guides are ex-prison warders, who tell entertaining and informative tales of suffragettes, executions, and the segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners. The gaol has a good coffee shop and restaurant, hosts live music and, in that darkly humorous Belfast fashion, you can even get married in prison. The Titanic Quarter has revitalised much of the city’s waterfront, with the Titanic Museum as its centrepiece. The displays include

a lot of material on Belfast life in the period the ship was built and you can also explore the SS Nomadic, a smaller Harland and Wolff built ship moored outside. St. George’s Market is a covered Victorian market now given over to food, antiques and crafts with lots of stalls providing on-the-go snacking. You’ll find everything from fish, game in season and cheeses, to hand-made jewellery, upcycled furniture, painting and sculpture. It’s open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and local musicians add to the atmosphere. Belfast Zoo is home to around 130 mostly endangered species, many of whom seem to have been selected for the comedy value of their names. The Pancake Tortoise, Eastern Bongo, Tawny Frogmouth, Red Titi, Superb Starling and Southern Screamer all sound like characters from Roald Dahl. That said, the Miniature Donkeys are so cute, you’ll want to bring one home. The city’s Botanic Gardens are perfect for a lazy meander amongst the planting in the palm house or in the surrounding parkland, though the Tropical Ravine is currently undergoing a rebuilding project. When it comes to food, Belfast is a carnivore’s delight, with many menus drawing heavily on locally produced bacon, ham, beef and potatoes. Try Edo, which, like many of the city’s best restaurants, features salt-aged beef and other meats from Peter Hannan. Holohan’s Pantry, The Muddler’s Club and Ginger Bistro are all highly rated, as are the city’s many Chinese and Indian restaurants. If you fancy a day trip, then try a walk up to Hare’s Gap in the Mountains of Mourne, followed by a stroll along Newcastle Beach. Or visit the Giant’s Causeway, then muster a bit of Dutch courage at Bushmills Distillery before taking the Carrick-a-Rede Coastal Walk and traversing the Rope Bridge. If you don’t fancy tackling quite so many stairs, then the Cultra Folk Museum offers an interesting step back into history. It’s pretty much like a live action version of a Victorian farm, with locals in period costume, demonstrations of traditional crafts, horse drawn carriages and old-fashioned shops. For modern shopping, Victoria Square and the Castle Court Centre offer plenty of choice.

‘Typically, a corporate client comes with a theme in mind and we deliver that look. We often deal with the events manager in those organisations, so they have a good grasp of how things work. We do a lot of work in the designing of centrepieces and props and understanding how different colour ways will work together. ‘For weddings it is slightly different. For many couples, this is their first experience of organising a large event and it can be daunting. There are so many details. When we meet a couple, our first job is to get an idea of their personality and style. We like to ask them for three words to help focus attention on how they want their wedding to look. Next, we create a Pinterest board for them. It’s an online mood board where we can all add pictures of our ideas. It makes it easier to visualise - a picture really does tell a thousand words. It's great when we are all on the same page with a shared vision. We know from the number of repeat corporate clients and positive feedback that this works.

Jill continued, ‘We tend not to stick to a certain style of event decor so we have to be on top of new trends and colour schemes. Spring’s here. It’s time to head out into the great outdoors.

If you think back to your own childhood, it probably involved exploring, riding your bike and playing outdoors away from the watchful gaze of your parents.

ll too often, today’s children don’t have the freedom to play outside unsupervised, because we fear for their safety. The joys of fishing in a stream using a lump of bread and some string, building a den, playing tennis against a wall, or just rolling down a hill till you feel dizzy, are lost.

The season starts around the end of May and the water is heated to a comfortable 29oC. There’s a paddling pool for small children, a chute, sessions with inflatables and even some midnight disco swims, which would appeal to teenagers. The sun terraces and Splash café are popular with parents too.

Yet playing outside is important. It allows kids to develop independence, to discover new skills and make lasting friendships, as well as getting a bit mucky and gathering an impressive collection of dirt and grazes. Without the chance to go outside, we make nature an alien place, we raise children with little awareness of danger, or the ability to reason independently. Since the 1970s, children’s roaming areas have been reduced by 95%, according to Natural England, who also note that those without access to nature often suffer a greater incidence of depression and mental health issues.

Inland offers plenty of forest walks on land owned by the Forestry Commission or the National Trust for Scotland, which also offers a programme of activities led by the rangers over the summer months. These are often free or inexpensive, but need to be booked in advance. Crathes Castle, near Banchory, offers a range of laid out trails that take from thirty minutes to three hours to cover and which make for an interesting family walk. There’s also a playground, café and gift shop as well as the castle and worldrenowned gardens, or, for the adventurous, Go Ape offers a screamingly fun time on the zip wires.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways for kids to get out and about without causing parental anxiety.

How about golf? It’s a great way to let the kids roam more freely in a safe environment? Golf Aberdeen manage the four public courses, MacKenzie Championship Course, Hazlehead Pines, Balnagask and Kings Links. Seasonal memberships and payas-you-play options are available.

First up, Aberdeenshire and the city have over 200km of coastline with some magnificent beaches. Some are often deserted and offer plenty of opportunities for gathering shells, guddling about in rock pools, netting small creatures and playing games. Balmedie offers dunes and golden sand, Cruden Bay is popular and Aberdeen Beach offers the chance to walk along the sand, then head to Queens Links for some food in the cafés and child-friendly restaurants, or a trip to the funfair. Further south, Lunan Bay is great for flying a kite or having a picnic. The café also offers a welcoming haven if the weather turns. If going for a paddle at the beach seems a little chilly, try Stonehaven’s Olympic-sized heated open air pool.

Many private golf clubs welcome junior members at reasonable rates. Peterculter Golf Club, for example, has family membership packages and several family fun golf days planned over the next few months. You can find out more at petercultergolfclub.co.uk. Park life also has it’s attractions for youngsters. There are nine parks in the city alone and most towns have a park or green space for kids to run around in, use the play equipment of just have some fun.

I’ve always been artistic and following on from school, I went to Aberdeen College to do a HND in Graphic Design.

then got a proper job working in a variety of positions including Senior Artworker and later as a Marketing Co-ordinator. As well as working full time, I had a family to look after at home along with my husband. My daughter is now 13 and in second year at secondary school and my son is 10 and in Primary 6. Several years ago, I decided that I wanted to get back into painting and joined an art class at Art on the Green in Udny Green. Two and a half hours of heaven on a Saturday morning - I loved it! As well as painting, there’s always a bit of chatting over a cup of tea and cake. The friends I have made in the class and the support that we give each other helped me to make the decision to pursue my art seriously last year. Catriona Yates Art was launched in March 2017. My work is an exploration of colour, texture and design through a variety of styles. It features animals, birds, plants, Art Deco, Art Nouveau or anything that catches my eye! I work from my home studio in Kingswells. My desk sits under the window to give me plenty of daylight and I also have a lamp for working in the evenings. Usually I work with my painting flat, especially for watercolour, and I have a desk easel for larger acrylic paintings. In the corner I also have my computer, perfect for updating my social media and answering customer emails.

From the initial spark of an idea I generally sketch the idea quickly and then gather reference material together. I use tracing paper to work through ideas and layouts for my more illustrative work and then the final design is transferred onto the watercolour paper ready for inking up. Once this has been completed, the colour is added using watercolour. If I’m using acrylic then I go from the initial sketch straight to painting. I enjoy using a wide range of techniques. My inspiration can come from a colour, an animal, photograph or artistic style such as Art Deco or a combination of them all. I’m also inspired by fellow artists, some of my favourites are Anita Inverarity, Ruth Taylor, Jackie Morris, Nikki Monaghan, Louise Rawlings, Audrey Kawasaki, and Este MacLeod. I’ll be taking part in North East Open Studios (NEOS) again this year at Delgatie Castle near Turriff. The castle provides a stunning backdrop for all the makers (16 in total last year) to show off their creations. Other events are still to be finalized and will be added to my website once they’re confirmed. It’s the design element in my work that makes it special. The design is very important and is often the aspect of the painting that is resolved first, and then the painting techniques and media are combined to produce the finished image. hen you meet the petite Taelor Shand, you can hardly believe she likes nothing better than living life in the fast lane. To be precise, that involves driving at great speed in her chosen hobby of circuit racing. Taelor has been rising through the ranks since she started competing at the tail end of the 2015 season. ‘I took part in the last two rounds of the Scottish Mini Cooper championship at Knockhill in Fife,’ she says, ‘and by the end of the 2016 season, I was ladies’ champion.’ So how did she get the racing bug in what is still a male-dominated sport? ‘You can blame my dad, Alan, for getting me started. He phoned one day to say he had bought me a Mini Cooper. He’s a man who really loves his cars and his pride and joy is an Audi R8. As for myself, when I was a pupil of the Gordon Schools in Huntly, I loved all-action sports such as gymnastics, horse riding, slalom skiing and quad biking. However, I never imagined how far my racing hobby would take me.’ Last year, Taelor drove under the Minimax banner, but is now driving a JCW Mini Cooper, having teamed up with Suffolk-based Excelr8 Motorsport. At this point in our conversation in a coffee shop in Aberdeen’s Union Street where traffic whizzes by at 10mph, my eyes glaze over as she explains what makes her new car so good, ‘It has an extra 265 bhp, a sequential gearbox and the diff with the slicks.’ Eh? Three more questions stick out as we speak. One is the obvious one of there being a dearth

of women drivers and is there hostility from the menfolk? ‘Not really,’ says Taelor. ‘The beauty of motorsport is that no matter what gender you are, you are all equal once that helmet is on.’ Secondly, is it not a hobby fraught with danger? ‘I don’t think of it in that way,’ she adds, ‘once you are racing, you are totally focused on the job in hand.’ Thirdly, how can you possibly afford what could be costing you £50,000 a year to compete? ‘My Dad contributes a lot of my funding, but securing sponsorship means I can compete for the whole season. In addition to her link with Excelr 8 Motorsport, Taelor has secured support from Lokring (Northern), which makes a mechanical cold weld for heavy industries and MES who provide electrical solutions to the power sector. Also on board for the third year running is East West Flooring, and new backer Pressure Test Solutions. When she’s not on the track, Taelor’s in her final year of an honours degree in business management and human resources at Robert Gordon University. Her priority is to do well enough to go on to do a Masters degree. Meanwhile, with spring in the air, there’s a spring in her step as Taelor continues to reach for the stars. New voyage for The Silver Darling

Taste of Grampian reveal celebrity ingredient

The Silver Darling has reopened following a major renovation, designed by award-winning architects, Nicoll Russell Studios. The much-loved restaurant has upgraded its dining area, and included a bespoke glass installation created by local artist Shelagh Swanson, featuring images of the neighbouring fishing village of Footdee and its people. Now owned by The McGinty’s Group, The Silver Darling also welcomes a new head chef Craig Somers, and a new seafood-influenced menu with more meat dishes, complemented by a well-balanced wine list and cocktail menu.

Following the success of last year’s Taste of Grampian with James Martin, the team behind Scotland’s largest one-day festival have announced that he will return for 2018.
