nlike eyes and teeth, where we have regular check-ups, hearing loss can creep up on us gradually. Often the first signs can be when we feel people around us are mumbling, or we have to turn up the volume on the TV. Jayne explained, ‘Some of my clients tell me they had stopped going to social engagements or didn’t enjoy them anymore as they were just nodding and smiling but hadn't a clue what had been said. Hearing loss can cause social isolation. It’s a serious problem. The World Health Organisation classifies social isolation as a greater health risk than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The good news is that it’s simple to restore good hearing and enjoy increased confidence. With today’s technology, you can benefit from hearing aids that you will barely notice and no-one else will be aware of at all! ‘Take Lyric, for example. This is a tiny 100% invisible hearing aid that is worn 24hrs a

day. You can sleep, shower and exercise while wearing it. Several customers have mentioned that they have literally forgotten that they wearing hearing aids. Many of our hearing aids now connect to your mobile phone and iPad allowing you to stream phone calls, face time, or music. Your phone can act as a remote control for your hearing aids allowing you to adjust the volume, change programs and many other features”. Bryce Hearing Services offers state of the art hearing test technology including a selfadministered online test and micro-suction wax removal. Jayne also works with sportspeople, musicians and industrial workers to offer custom ear protection. e’re not sure why, but April and May always feel like the time when things in the city and shire start to rev up. Maybe it’s Nuart, the hugely popular street art festival which injects a new vibrancy into the heart of the city? Maybe it’s events like our own, rather glamorous, Masquerade Ball on May 31st, which raises funds for local charity Friends of Anchor? You can find out how to book your tickets on page 77. Maybe it’s just the chance to cast off a few layers and indulge in a bit of a makeover and a few new outfits? Maybe it’s about heading further afield, exploring new places and revisiting old favourites? Whatever it is, the days are getting longer, the temperature is rising and the AWPR is finally open all the way round, so it’s time to get out and make the most of it. Join a dance class, take a hike, visit a soft play centre, hunt for Easter Eggs, help a charity, watch a sporting event, discover some art you love, spruce up your décor, plant a garden, make new friends and eat new things. Life is full of opportunities. We’re here to help you grab them! The Trend team x

ALLERGY TESTING for adults and children

T

his time of year can be a misery for anyone with hayfever or other forms of allergies which cause Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis. Sore, puffy eyes, a running, congested nose and constant sniffles and sneezing affect as many as one in three of us. It can cause considerable problems in everyday life, work and school, especially with the exam season approaching. Some sufferers experience a loss of sleep and feel unable to attend outdoor events during hayfever season. Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis can be triggered by many allergens, not just hay. Airborne grass and tree pollens, certain spores as well as house dust mites and domestic pets can all be responsible for an attack. There’s no need to suffer in silence. The Aberdeen Clinic offers comprehensive allergy testing and proven treatments for Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis and other allergies. The process begins with a detailed history and examination as well as a questionnaire which is completed before testing. In skin prick testing, a drop

of allergen is placed on your forearm and a lancet used to ‘scratch’ the skin, a weal will develop if an allergy exists. A range of blood tests are also available for adults and children under 2 years old. Blood tests are used where skin prick testing is unsuitable, such as those with eczema or children under two years old. Blood testing allows a number of different reactions to be tested for and helps identify the causes of persistent allergies. The Aberdeen Clinic offers a comprehensive allergy treatment programme. This includes a review of current medication and assessing use of nasal sprays. Severe allergies may be treated by complex desensitisation. In appropriate cases, our GP may prescribe the intra-muscular steroid injection Kenalog for seasonal allergies for those over 16.

Meet R Richard Mackay

ichard Mackay is a man of tradition - working as a fourth generation draper in a familyrun business that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. You only have to meet this dapper gentleman in his tailored tweed suit to see that he knows a thing or two about country fashion. As Richard explains, a draper is one who fits clothing, while a tailor actually cuts the fabric. So when he meets a new client, Richard goes to work determining the cut, style, and material that will be most suitable. He then sources the best textiles, often tweeds and tartans, and oversees the production of the garment. Eight to ten weeks later, Richard reunites with his client to ensure a perfect fit.

Tweed has enjoyed a return to the style stakes in the past few years, bringing a modern edge to catwalks from McQueen to Chanel. It’s a fabric with heritage, craftsmanship and casual elegance, particularly when well cut. A long-time favourite with the country set, it also works well in town, whether worn to the office or with jeans at the weekend. Country Ways knows this better than anyone and that is why they have teamed up with Richard Mackay Tailoring to offer his bespoke, made-to-measure services in-store. For information on dates that Richard will be in attendance and to book a personal fitting, contact Country Ways. 115 Holburn Street Aberdeen countryways.com

Judges praised Eat on the Green for the strong promotion and partnership-working with local

suppliers, as well as their clear vision for the future. Meldrum House Country Hotel and Golf was commended by judges for its strong focus on staff training and scholarship schemes, as well as the importance of sourcing Scottish produce.

B

ack in Bertie Wooster’s day, your valet would know that it’s the finishing touches that can spell stylish success or dress-code disaster for the man about town. They’d frown upon suede shoes worn with a suit and would be overcome with distress at the mere sight of a shortsleeved shirt or unpolished footwear. These days, we’re a bit more relaxed, but the right accessories can still help pull an outfit together. DUNCAN MCBAIN MILTON BRASSERIE

Duncan McBain has headed up the kitchen at The Milton Brasserie for the past two years. Here he shares his passions and a sumptuous dessert recipe. ‘I started cooking at home quite early on as my parents worked long hours. This sparked my interest in food and I took a kitchen porter job to learn more. Since then, I’ve worked my way up. I came back here two years ago and got married to Caroline, last year. ‘I love the flexibility of cooking here. Every day is different, it can be anything from soup and sandwiches to fine dining events or afternoon teas. We have a great team at the Milton. We’re all about classic food with a modern twist. Desserts are about giving the whole plate a wow factor to end your meal on a high. I’m always looking for new ideas online and in cook books, but I’m not sure I could live without my 10 year old copy of the Larousse Gastronomique.’

A

Ninety Nine Bar & Kitchen

lazy Sunday lunchtime brought us to Ninety Nine Bar and Kitchen on Back Wynd. It’s perfectly located on a direct route between Waterstones and the vinyl section at HMV, which are about the only shops my beloved enters voluntarily. The atmosphere is mellow and few places have staff who are quite so passionate about their food and cocktail ingredients. We started with the cocktail menu. I had intended to try a Kiss on the Cheek, but it seems like half of the city had been smooching away on Saturday night, so a key home-made ingredient wasn’t available. Instead, I was asked what I liked and was shortly in possession of a faultless Fresh Raspberry Bellini, thanks to the expert mixologists behind the bar. Beloved opted for a Respect Yours, which proved to be an inspired blend of elderberry, plum elixir, champagne and a foamy topping made from whisked aquafaba. A surprising number of the dishes on the well-balanced menu are vegan and anyone with a gluten intolerance will be bewildered by suddenly having 16 different dishes to choose from. Local meat and fish feature and you can even have oysters on Fridays and Saturdays if available. Add in 14 dishes that are suitable for vegans or vegetarians and it’s clear that the staff here want everyone to have a great meal. The food is pretty relaxed and robust. It’s well presented without being fussily elaborate or piled with incomprehensible twiddly bits. If anything, it’s clear that a tremendous amount of thought has gone into each dish. If Katie Melua, Alicia Keyes and Norah Jones cooked instead of singing, this is the kind of food they’d produce. It’s an intensely soothing and de-stressing place. Even the salt and pepper came in upcycled empty miniature spirit bottles and the colourful tulips, scrubbed wooden tables and mismatched vintage crockery gave an instantly comfortable, homely feel.

We opted for Ninety Nine’s uniquely Scottish twist on tapas. Beloved rated his Cullen skink as one of the best he’d tasted, while the earthy flavours and velvet-smooth texture of my garden pea and mint soup were excellent. Beloved swiped both hunks of the rustic wholemeal organic bread, but he did say that he enjoyed it! There’s a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so some interesting combinations are possible. Portions tend towards the substantial, so you won’t be disappointed with whichever you choose. My chickpea curry dhal came with some great naan bread on the side and was topped with fresh chilli and coriander. It was well spiced, but would have made a main meal by itself. Two mini-Portobello mushrooms topped with blue cheese and crunchy, mealy chestnuts proved to be perfect comfort food, resting on a bed of rocket and micro-greens. Beloved opted for Guinness-soaked Toulouse sausage which came as chunky slices with Dijon mustard mayo and could cure almost any hangover. His third choice was stovies, which came as a bread-crumbed croquette. Who knows how they got the stovies in there, but we took it as further proof of kitchen wizardry, an opinion founded on the fact that they do proper chips! A suggestion that Beloved’s rowie and butter pudding, which came laced with a winter falernum syrup and was sprinkled with cranachan, was ideal for sharing was met with stern disapproval. I snuck a bit anyway and it was delicious, even if there must have been roughly a million calories in the sizeable wodge dished up. My cheeseboard perfectly demonstrated the kitchen’s attention to the quality of their ingredients, with a selection of mini oatcakes, home-made fruity chutney and several Gaelic cheeses, including a tangy goat’s cheese crottin and a superb Scottish brie. So, Ninety Nine Bar and Kitchen - let’s just say it’s pretty close to a hundred!

alads can be healthy, but are often a bit boring. Go beyond green with interesting flavour combinations and homemade dressings. Use bold flavours, left over mustards, vinegars and oils to blitz up your own dressings. Repot fresh herbs into bigger tubs and keep them on your window ledge. Rosemary, thyme and parsley are easy to look after. Follow your nose and seek out wild garlic and rocket in the countryside which are

plentiful and delicious. Flakes of poached fish or chicken add depth to a salad, add lentils or Israeli cous cous and dressing for something special. If you’re aiming to eat more healthily, try reducing the fat by 50% in your cooking and increasing vegetable content by a third. Sneak grated vegetables into family favourites and use pulses in place of rice or potatoes.

Cut Flowers in the home

SELECT A LOCATION IN THE GARDEN THAT GETS PLENTY OF SUN, AND PREFERABLY ALREADY HAS RICH SOIL THAT DRAINS WELL.

H

erbaceous plants are hungry and they need lots of nutrients, so ensure that your border or bed is weed-free and take time to work in a good layer of compost and an all-purpose organic fertliser. Soil that is rich in organic matter will improve water retention, drainage and increase nutrients within the soil. At the beginning of the growing season, apply a slow release granular organic fertilizer in with your compost to give everything a good start.

If this is a bed or border that is dedicated to flower cutting the layout is important. Being able to access the flowers easily, means you won’t damage them when harvesting. To this end, plant flowers in wide rows with paths in between. It is important to understand the needs of the flowers you are planting and grouping these generally in the same region of the growing area. You don’t want to plant something that requires a great deal of watering next to one that prefers drought-like conditions!

Š Shutterstock/Romolo Tavani

GARDENS | 63

Within the overall arrangement you need to think of heights too. You don’t want shorter-growing flowers to be taken over by taller ones where they will get little water or light, so grouping similar heights together will avoid this. BLOOMING Different flowers will bloom at different times during the growing season so consider when each group will bloom and plant them in order of early, mid and late season.

If you see blooms are flagging a bit during the summer then top up with a liquid feed and remember to mulch! It can be anything from composted leaf to spent mushroom compost but mulching at the beginning and keeping that up will help the soil to retain moisture and also gradually improve soil structure as it degrades. Now all we need is the sun! gardendesignscotland.com

RIGHT HERE

PRODUCTIONS IS THE PERFECT EVENT PLANNER

H

ow do you ensure that your wedding or corporate event is remembered for all the best reasons? The answer is Right Here! Right Here Productions offer a range of corporate events and wedding packages that make any event really special, as owner Alison Telfer explained. ‘We started writing and performing Murder Mysteries back in 2015 and now have a wide range of scenarios. We've performed in many hotels, as well as Fyvie Castle, The Gordon Highlanders Museum and even Peterhead Prison Museum. The venue becomes a character and we do our best to show it off during the night.

‘Murder Mystery dinners are tremendous fun. Between each course, two of our actors take a member of each team away to a different place to investigate a crime scene, or pore over new evidence. Meanwhile the rest of the party is with other actors, getting an opportunity to grill them.

‘The whole team at Right Here Productions is dedicated to making sure our clients have a great time’

RIGHT HERE PRODUCTIONS | 73

The teams really have to communicate and work together to solve the mystery and every event is completely different. ‘We’ve even performed a Murder Mystery at a wedding before, but our most popular wedding option is Marryoke. Marryoke is a unique music video of the bride, groom, wedding party and guests singing a favourite song. We tend to start filming as the wedding parties are getting ready and get them to lip sync along to their chosen song. We then coax unsuspecting guests into performing a line or two to camera and edit it all together, including highlights of the day, so that the finished product provides the newly married couple with a 3-4 minute video, featuring their families and friends having an absolute ball! ‘We can also provide singers for background music during photographs, or Singing Waiters as a surprise during the wedding meal. Our Rat Pack, Musicals, Disney and Pop packages are popular, but we’d consider a special request, such as the bride’s favourite song. The

Singing Waiters are a fun way to surprise the newlyweds and the guests and really get the party started. Our website includes some videos of both Singing Waiters and Marryoke so you can see how entertaining this is. ‘Our prices for all of our services are extremely competitive and our events are of the highest standard. We have some of Aberdeen's finest and most versatile actors and singers. Our Murder Mysteries have several price points allowing clients the opportunity to choose a scenario within their budget. We can also create a brand new scenario, which can be written to fit a certain theme or celebration for a unique corporate or private celebration. ‘The Singing Waiters and Marryoke services are seen as very much an 'add on' for weddings and other events, so our prices reflect this. We can also scale the packages up or down in terms of time or performers, so our prices fit with a wedding budget. People are often looking for something different and I can guarantee that we can help to create something unique! ‘The whole team at Right Here Productions is dedicated to making sure our clients have a great time. We love bringing laughter and entertainment to corporate events and helping to make weddings sparkle. Whether you’re a hotel or other venue looking to run a Mystery evening, or looking to make your wedding day even more special, we’re here to help you do just that!’

If you’re in need of a weekend away, but don’t want to spend too long travelling, then York offers a beguiling combination of history, food, events, culture and shopping…

A visit to the Minster and an amble round the city walls will set you up nicely for lunch. If you fancy trying the local delicacies, by which we mean Yorkshire puddings and local craft ales and cider, then try the Chopping Block and Walmgate Ale House. As with most cities, there’s a huge variety of cuisine on offer, so if you have a sudden desire for something Vietnamese or Eastern European, then you’re in the right place.

Y

ork is a fabulous city for a short break. Airbnb offer over 300 choices, so you’re bound to find something that suits. Most of the large hotel chains have a presence, but The Parisi, Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, and Grey’s Court all fit the bill for an upscale stay, while Hotel Indigo offers a central locale, and a modern design at an affordable price.

History buffs will delight in the Jorvik Viking Museum, which is also great for kids. Aside from historic trains, the Railway Museum also offers a chance to eat in old-fashioned elegance on board the dining car of the Countess of York. The city is home to some fascinating events and festivals throughout the year. Easter brings York’s Chocolate Festival. June sees York invaded by the Romans for the Eboracum Roman Festival with re-enactments and living history events. If you

like your history a little more modern, then the North Yorkshire Moors Railway hosts a 1960s festival in mid-July. December is, as you might expect, a festive feast of Christmas Markets and fairs. If you’re feeling gothic, try an evening ghost tour by vintage bus, or take the kids for a trip to the York Dungeon. They’ll love the mix of plague, torture, rebellion and witchcraft on show. A day trip to Whitby offers some excellent fish and chips. Whitby Abbey inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and if the idea of mingling with 20,000 Creatures of the Night appeals, Whitby also hosts a Goth Weekender twice each year in April and October.

The train takes just over five hours from Aberdeen and deposits you just outside the city’s ancient walls. Not only will you arrive refreshed, but it means you don’t need to swear at the sat nav as you try and navigate York’s peculiar ring-road and one-way streets while trying to find your hotel. Train fare pricing remains one of the great travel mysteries of our times, so it’s best to check for special offers with operator LNER up to three months ahead, or check out split ticket pricing. Working a month ahead, we found singles priced between £21 and £129. The return journey always seems to be a little more expensive. If you can travel at a cheap time, then upgrading to first class can offer a bargain in terms of comfort and little extras. Last minute booking will put a major dent in your spending money, with rail prices only about £70 less than a cheap return flight to New York! York even offers a medieval twist on shopping, with the Shambles, a higgledy-piggledy collection of cobbled alleys. If you want to avoid the crowds, go early, as this is Europe’s most visited street. It’s like a set from Harry Potter, with its half-timbered buildings and projecting upper storeys.

From large scale murals to artists working with tiles, stencils, LEGO and drilling into concrete, Nuart Aberdeen is back on a monumental scale this Easter.

Reinforcing the power of art for all ages, childhood memories will also be ignited as artist Jan Vormann makes a playful mark on the city, brick by brick with LEGO.

The walls and streets of the city will be the canvas for a superstar line up of international street artists. Axel Void, Ememem, Ben Eine, Evol, Helen Bur, Hush, Julio Anaya Cabanding, Smug, Vhils, Jan Vormann, Hama Woods, Dotmasters and Anders Gjennestad aka Strøk, will all make their unique mark on the city during the festival, which takes place from 18 - 21 April.

This year’s theme explores the importance of storytelling and its relationship to the city. Whether this is a city full of towering works of art gifted by visitors or laughing pensioners spray-painting their way to infamy, the festival and its art is open to each individual to interpret.

The festival kicks off with an exclusive ‘In Conversation’ interview at The Belmont Filmhouse led by the BBC’s Fiona Stalker with playwright, designer and celebrated Scottish artist John Byrne. Described by Billy Connolly as, ‘Scotland’s favourite artist’ John was the first artist to paint a gable end in Glasgow back in the 1970s and the audience is set to get a unique insight into his life as an artist. Over the festival weekend, an engaging programme of film screenings, artist talks, lectures and debates takes place in the Belmont for all to enjoy. The city will also host a UK first, as the world of street art is opened to seniors. A workshop led by internationally renowned Portuguese curator and architect, Lara Seixo Rodrigues, will be held over two days culminating when the rebellious senior participants are let loose on a wall to create their unique piece of art.

As well as looking up at walls, visitors to Nuart Aberdeen will need to look down, as colourful ‘puddles’ appear courtesy of Ememem, who repairs potholes and cracks on pavements with art. The Green will act as the heart of the festival with the public launch taking place at 1pm on Saturday 20 April and free guided walking tours departing from here. Inspired Nights on the Green will serve up the best local street food, drink, music, entertainment and art all weekend starting at 4pm on Friday 19 April. Nuart Aberdeen is brought to the city by Aberdeen Inspired and Aberdeen City Council. The festival is not to be missed. The street art can be enjoyed all year round on free walking tours which run until October. For more information visit nuartaberdeen.co.uk.

KIDS | 85

N

ot because of their diminutive size or their unwavering willingness to eat dirt and anything else they may find on the floor, but because they are impossibly energetic. Kids expend more energy before breakfast than I can muster in an entire day. So the big challenge of parenthood becomes channeling all of that energy. Fortunately, some resourceful person, a parent no doubt, invented soft play - indoor playgrounds in which the equipment is swaddled in padded foam so children can run, jump, and climb to their hearts’ content, in an environment designed for safety. Parents can take a wee break, put down their guard a bit and just watch the calories get burned, often with a good cup of coffee in hand. In and around Aberdeen, there are plenty of soft play areas to choose from. In town, there are a few firm favourites. Wynford Farm, in Kingswells, features an expansive indoor play barn as well as an animal park where you can observe, pet and learn about some fascinating critters. The Den and the Glen in Maryculter, formerly Storybook Glen, invites you to discover some of your favourite fairy-tale characters in the Glen, or run wild in the all-weather Den, complete with its own climbing wall and sports arena. If you have a mix of older and younger children to amuse, Jump In Trampoline Park on Craigshaw Road has something for all ages, including a dedicated jump and soft play area for the little ones.

Outside of town, there are also plenty of options. In Stonehaven, Scallywags provides pirate-themed fun alongside a café that has been known to attract adults with no children to entertain at all. In Alford, Tick Tock Play has divided its activity area into three distinct sections, each dedicated to a specific age range. Further north in Boddam, Loopty Lou’s is an enormous indoor centre, featuring everything from an astroturf football pitch to a brightly coloured dining area where parents can enjoy a snack and still keep an eye on all of the action. The award-winning Hoodles, just by Oldmeldrum, continually adds to its play areas and offers an excellent café for kids and grown-ups alike. The fully-enclosed playbarn features a large modern playframe, ball swing and two slides perfect for children aged 2 - 12 and adults can play too! Supervised under two’s have their own area. Outside, the courtyard offers the chance to run riot and, from March to October - weather permitting - the paddock’s trampolines, swings, football pitch, jelly belly, pedal go-karts and track, grass slide and a Flying Fox offer endless fun, while parents relax at a nearby picnic table with a treat or two. When you have children in your care, the priorities are really quite simple - keep them safe and happy, fuel them with good food and, by all means, tire them out if you want them to sleep at night. Thanks to the popularity of soft play centres, you are never far from a place where you can do all of those things under one roof!

What feels like a lifetime ago, I graduated from Gray’s School of Art with a degree in fine art, specialising in printmaking

In relief printing you work in negative you carve away the lines you wish to remain white. It’s as if you are drawing with light. There is something very satisfying about the ‘big reveal’ moment in printmaking, having worked on a block for some time and never being quite certain what it will look like, until you pull the paper back for the first time to see the print you have created.

A

fter graduating I worked as a receptionist at a tarpaulin manufacturing company, then found myself running their graphics department. I learned a lot of useful new skills about digital printing and finishing. My husband and I started a family, then spent three years in Kuala Lumpur with his job. I was inspired by the Islamic patterning that is to be found everywhere in the city. Now, as the children have started to grow, I have found I have more time to focus on my art.

When working on a new print my inspiration comes from something I see frequently in my daily life, often featured are the birds, animals and people I see in the countryside where I live. The project I’m currently working on is something I have been mulling over in my head for some time. There are a lot of strong characters in the community where I live, each offering something unique. I have talked with a number of these people about their skills, photographed and sketched them. Back in my studio I use the reference materials I’ve gathered to compose new engravings. I will then transfer my composition onto the printing block, it is very important to draw in

as much detail as possible as there is no room for errors in the carving process. One mistake can mean starting over from scratch. I have a range of different palm-held tools that all give me different marks and textures, and I work with these to carve my image into the block. Once I feel I have finished I will make a test print and then revisit anything I think needs more work. Then the block is finally ready to print. Prints are great for collectors because the multiple nature of printmaking means that the cost of the time, skills and materials can be divided between

the number of prints in each limited edition. In my view, a limited edition is the artist making a promise that they will use that block to make said number of prints and no more. Thus the purchaser has a print of a limited edition and once that edition is sold then no more prints can be made. Back in 2015, I visited an exhibition and demonstration by the Woodend Wood Engravers in Banchory. I was totally blown away by the intricacy of the work on show. I thought the medium

would lend itself well to my designs. The following year the WWE ran a beginners workshop which I attended and have been hooked on wood engraving ever since. I was thrilled when my wood engraving print, A Thousand Stories, won an award and was selected for the Society of Wood Engravers annual exhibition which is currently touring the UK. My work can also be found at Tangletree Studio in Aboyne. I’m looking forward to taking part in NEOS in September. Carine Eunson Printmaker carine-eunson-printmaker.co.uk

THE LAST WORD

Y

our fearless and intrepid reporter has safely negotiated a foray into a world where men normally fear to tread. Yes, an hour was passed in the delightful company of Alison Waller who is celebrating 25 years of building a bridal empire in Aberdeen. The one-time radiographer has three shops with Perfect titles in close proximity on the city’s Holburn Street, a far cry from the launch in 1994 of her first venture, Bridal Revival, in the city’s Leadside Road. Says Alison, ‘It was just a wee shop with once-worn dresses but I moved onwards and upwards to premises in Great Western Road and Golden Square, all the while offering couture and bespoke outfits.’ Success bred success and in 2001, Alison took the plunge and bought a former TSB bank at 265-267 Holburn Street, all three storeys of it and now all serving a specific purpose. ‘On the top floor, we have a seamstress and where steaming and ironing is done,’ she adds. ‘We feature bridesmaid and prom dresses as well as a selection of evening gowns on the middle floor and on the ground floor we have two fitting rooms and an array of wedding dresses. In addition, we added a lower ground floor we call the Atrium where we offer high-end designer and bespoke dresses.’

Over the years, Alison has enjoyed keeping up with trends by paying an annual visit to a huge supplier in Barcelona, Pronovias, and also has a fruitful relationship with Suzanne Neville in London. ‘Lots of celebrities go to her,’ says Alison, ‘and we enjoy her annual visit to us.’ So what about her other shops? At 286 Holburn Street, once an off-licence, mothers of the bride are catered for and at 263, next door to the main shop, you can buy dresses off the peg. Away from business, Alison and husband Peter, who hails from Hartlepool and is in the diving industry, have two children. Dubaibased Ashleigh has a three-year-old daughter, Harper, with husband, Andrew Thomson, and son Blair, is an app developer in London. Asked about the keys to her success, without hesitation Alison pays tribute to her staff of stylists, led by Emma Stuart, a former fashion student in Aberdeen, who notched up seven years in post last Valentine’s Day. ‘It might appear to be a glamorous and exciting job but it is very hard work trying to satisfy the desires and needs of customers and they do it brilliantly,’ she says. “We also pride ourselves on having eye-catching window displays, something I learned early on.’
