Hi everyone, well can you believe here we are in April already! It’s crazy where the first quarter of this year has gone, and haven’t we been so lucky with the mild winter, I wonder if it will mean a scorcher of a summer.. here’s hoping!

In the office it’s just buzzing, with all our attention now well and truly focused on the Awards, all the applications are now in and the judges are working hard on them all to decide who will be our finalists this year. If you haven’t already done so it would be wise to book your tickets, it’s always a great evening even if you’re not up for an award so come along and join in the fun.

This year we are delighted to be supporting CHILDREN 1st as our chosen charity, for tickets and tables email events@trendmagazine.co.uk we also have a guest singer this year, local boy Stephen Innes, who is featured in this issue and who will also be performing at Fyvie Live later this year.

As for Trend events our next big one is an ‘Afternoon Tea Garden Party’ at the Marcliffe in May. The charity benefitting from this will be CLAN; we want all you ladies to come along to it, glad rags and hats are de rigueur and we have prizes for ‘Best Dressed’ and ‘Best Hat of the Day’. There will be a fashion show and a couple of surprises all happening on the day.

London Fashion Week Autumn/ Winter 12/13 The runway shows aren’t just about next seasons clothes, they also showcase the best new beauty and make up trends. Trend make up artist Rae Mathieson attended London Fashion Week to take in the AW shows and work her magic on the models at the Clements Ribeiro AW12 show for bourjois. Here she shares her top 3 trends from the catwalks and advises how to work the trends today to stay one step ahead of the season....

Bronzed Goddess – seen at Jena Thoe, Kinder Aggugini and felder felder.

Bronzed goddesses invaded the catwalks at a string of shows. Shimmering skin and golden hues were seen on lips, eyes and cheeks – the models bronzed lips were the main talking point at Kinder Aggugini.

Everyday Wear: Everyone loves bronzer to pick up peeky skin, but choose your bronzer with care. A semi-matte, dusty bronzer is easier to wear and more flattering than a high shine, metallic finish. Try Clinique ‘True bronze bronzer’ £21.00 or Chanel ‘Bronze Universel’ £29.00.

Great skin buffed to perfection with just a hint of foundation for a dewy, fresh finish. At Clements Ribeiro we applied the Bourjois healthy mix foundation for a dewy, flawless finish breaking it up with a pop of colour on the lips in super bright neon fuchsia, set with neon powder for a modern, matte finish. To compliment, a slick of gloss was applied to the eye lids and brushed up into perfectly groomed brows. At topshop Unique the models too had clean, fresh skin with a hint of boyish beauty thanks to brushed up brows.

Everyday wear: Keep the skin fresh and make your statement with a pop of bold colour on the lips – try ‘Show Orchid’ or ‘Neon Orange’ £12 both by MAC. Red Lips – seen at House of Holland, PPQ, Nicole Fahri and Jonathan Saunders.

Red lips are back (though, did they ever go away?) for Autumn/Winter 2012. At PPQ a fresh take on the look was created by applying the colour like a ‘red wine stain’ – applying and blotting of the excess moisture to leave a stain on the lips. At House of Holland MAC provided the make up and the lips were modern classic well defined and brighter than bright red.

Everyday wear: For an on-trend, ‘wine stained’ lips (without the alcohol!) apply a moisturising, berry toned red to the lips and blot off with a tissue to leave only the pigment on the lips.

Hair Raising Compost!

North-east hairdressers can now recycle waste hair into compost rather than bin it.

Organics recycling firm Keenan Recycling transforms food and garden waste into BSI accredited compost and have just introduced hair as a new item that can be composted.

Human hair has a high nitrogen level, which is proven to help plants thrive, therefore adding it to the recycling process leads to an increase in slow release nitrogen in the compost, which helps to maintain an even and rich growth.

Keenan Recycling deals with tens of thousands of tonnes of food and green waste from businesses and local authorities across Scotland. The compost produced from the waste is used on gardens and crops by local businesses and farmers.

Keenan Recycling offers a commercial food waste collection service across the North-east and this is now being rolled out to hairdressers too. The initiative helps businesses reach recycling targets and helps to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

The former fine artist was born in Aberdeen.

She realised her future was in interiors when she lived in India for a year. Her creative energy up until then was channelled into drawing and painting. After completely re-designing the whole complex her family moved into in India, Adele realised interior design was

the way forward. She worked on a variety of projects in India and continued her business when she returned to Aberdeen. She worked for a respected interior designer in Aberdeen for 8 years.

Adele has an enviable network of trusted tradesmen and craftsmen to carry out the projects, although clients can chose to use their own. “My philosophy is never to impose ideas but rather reflect the lifestyle and personality of the client.”

Projects are tailored to meet client’s budget requirements. Adele works with everything from colour advice and soft furnishings to major renovation projects. Adele is just as comfortable guiding clients through fabric collections and liasing with architects as she is donning overalls to paint!

The Tasting Room @ Eat on the Green

On an unseasonably mild March evening Clare and I set out on a beautiful drive across Aberdeenshire to Eat on the Green, one of the regions finest dining experiences, nestled in the picturesque village of Udny Green. > WORDS BY LEIGH MATHIESON

Eat on the Green have recently stepped it up another notch by offering a 10 course tasting menu, an intricate menu carefully created by chef Brian McLeish.

We arrived at the restaurant with a warm, friendly greeting from staff and were shown to The Tasting Room, an intimate dining room lavishly decorated and candlelit to create the perfect ambiance. There we met with chef proprietor Craig Wilson who introduced us to chef Brian and Kathryn (Assistant Manager) and Scott and who looked after us for the evening.

This gastronomical journey began with fresh native rock oysters served alongside a glass of champagne, an acquired taste but if you are a fan these are a fantastic start to the meal.

I am a foodie and love to try anything new so I enjoyed everything about this experience, but there were some particular favourites on menu

that stood out. The veal tenderloin and foie gras was delicious, the flavours were rich and intense with a hint of sweet cinnamon and ginger which was intensified by the Sauternes dessert wine that it had been paired with. A favourite of both Clare and I was the creamy Jerusalem artichoke and wild mushroom risotto, a moreish dish with a flavourful sage and walnut pesto.

At times we were reluctant to eat the food as it was so beautifully presented such as the decadent gold covered pork and the sugar decorations with the salted chocolate ganache.

The pear and rosemary cheesecake was to die for with a sweet and creamy topping set on a crisp peanut, biscuit base, it is making my mouth water just writing about it.

If you are a foodie and you haven’t indulged in this tasting menu yet then your taste buds are missing out, The Tasting Room at Eat on the Green is an experience not to be missed.

Beetroot @ The Athenaeum - Sunday Roast Sunday, ‘the day of rest’ and the perfect time to sit back, relax and let someone else do the cooking. If you are looking for a laid back Sunday roast then you need to check out The Athenaeum.

They have recently teamed up with Beetroot Restaurants, the people behind the fabulous La Stella and The Courtyard, to create Beetroot@ The Athenaem and offer an exciting new menu alongside ‘home-style’ Sunday roasts.

We had booked before Friday which meant we could pre-order our Sunday roast to be carved especially for our table. With a choice of chicken, beef or lamb we all opted for the beef.

We had been saving ourselves all morning for our roast and so passed on starters, but

there were some mouth watering options that we would have gladly sampled, such as the haggis bon bons with whiskey dip, feta and sweet beetroot bruscetta or hot smoked salmon potato cake with sweet chilli and lemon salsa. Carved and served by the chef at our table, the beef was cooked to perfection, as it was still slightly pink, and so tender it melted in your mouth. In keeping with the quirky Athenaeum style all of the trimmings were served in pastel pink serving dishes including roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, parsnips, carrots, beetroot mash and keeping it

local with a side of skirlie too, and not to forget the gravy served in a pastel pink teapot!

Even though we had skipped starters to save room none of us had left any space for dessert but again there were some delightful options to choose from including sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch ice cream and caramel sauce, double chocolate brownie with raspberry ripple ice cream or cheesecake of the day. Just as we finished lunch there was an acoustic guitarist arriving to play a set and so we moved to the comfy coaches to sit back, relax and enjoy a coffee and some live music.

Lauren Campbell Pastry Chef @ Broadstraik How would you describe the food at the Broadstraik? At the Broadstraik we like to try to cater for a wide range of tastes by offering a varied menu consisting of traditional ‘pub grub’ and a la carte. Although most of our food is very traditional, we like to give our meals our own signature style by throwing in twists where possible. We like to source our ingredients from local suppliers as we believe in the importance of community and fresh, quality food.

What chefs cooking styles have influenced you and how has your own cooking developed over the course of your career? My first head chef was Chris Wills at The Eating Room in Aberdeen. He influenced me in a number of ways and I owe most of the skills and techniques learned to him.

He conveyed to me the importance of fresh, homemade food. Over the last 5 years, I have had the opportunity to observe many talented chefs which has increased my ability to select the correct approach in most given situations whilst working in the kitchen. Having also had front of house experience, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of customer care when it comes to their individual needs.

What are your culinary ambitions? My personal aim is to preserve the high standards of quality food and customer care at the Broadstraik. I feel that the best way to approach this is by continuing to listen to the needs of our customers and by following the changing trends of the hospitality industry.

What’s your own favourite food? I am always keen to try new dishes and enjoy a range of different cultural foods. My favourite type would have to be Chinese food because it can be very colourfully presented and allows for a great deal of versatility.

How do you come up with new ideas for dishes? I am very fortunate at the Broadstraik as I am allowed a great deal of freedom when it comes to experimenting with new ideas and recipes. I also take every opportunity I can to dine in various restaurants in order to pick up new ideas and establish growing trends amongst competitors.

Have you ever had a culinary disaster you’d like to tell us about? A few years

ago whilst working under my mentor Chris, he asked me to dip the profiteroles he had just made in both the white and dark chocolate which I did without hesitation. There obviously was a breakdown in communication somewhere as little known to me he had meant dip half of them in each as opposed to each in both. This taught me to always ask when ’m unsure.

What three essential qualities do you need to be a top chef? Personally, resilience would have to be the most important quality for any top chef as you are working in a demanding, stressful environment. I also feel that you must be able to accept constructive criticism if you want to improve your trade.

As you work with other kitchen members, patience is also very important in order to work in harmony as a team.

Sticky Toffee Pudding Ingredients 4oz butter and extra for greasing 6oz dark brown sugar, 8oz pitted dates 8oz self raising flour, 4 eggs 1tsp baking powder 1tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ shot expresso (optional) For the sauce 3oz butter, 3oz dark brown sugar 6oz double cream, Ice cream to serve Preheat oven to 2000C. Grease and line the baking tin with greaseproof paper.

Place dates and water into a pan and bring to the boil.

Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy, then beat in the eggs.

After the dates have boiled remove from the heat and add expresso, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda.

Mix the sugar mixture with the date mixture and fold in the flour.

Blitz up the mixture with a hand mixer. Pour into a baking tray and cook for 30 minutes.

To check if ready place a knife in the centre, if the knife comes out clean then the mix is ready.

Sauce Place all ingredients into a pan and heat until just before boiling, stir.

To Serve Cut the cake mixture into individual portion sizes and pour over the sauce and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The Singapore Sling was invented by Ngiam Tong Boom sometime before 1915 at the Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The recipe has been modified over the years and there are many bars serving different variations. The original recipe was lost, so it was recreated based on the memories of former bartenders and written notes from the period, one of which is hanging in the Raffles Hotel Museum. We have reintroduced the Singapore Sling on our menu, paying homage to the original Raffles Hotel recipe.

The future of financial planning

Alan Ball, Rory Craig and Tom Hyslop Another member of staff at Aberdeenbased Russell Gibson Financial Management has gained CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERCM (CFPCM) designation.

Rory Craig, who joined the independent financial management company in 2008, achieved the certification in January after a number of years of study. He has worked in the financial services industry for nine years and at 32 years old is believed to be one of the youngest financial advisers in Scotland to hold CFPCM certification.

He becomes Russell Gibson’s third CFPCM professional – the firm’s two directors, Alan Ball and Tom Hyslop, have held the certification since 2007. CFPCM designation has professional standing above the minimum qualification level that financial advisers are required to hold when new legislation comes

into force in January 2013.

Rory graduated from the University of Aberdeen with an MA (Hons) in Management and an MSc in Finance and Investment Management, and also holds a Diploma in Financial Planning.

Tom said, “New legislation will shortly be introduced which aims to improve the customer’s experience when accessing financial services. As a result advisers must be suitably qualified.

“It is fantastic that Rory has achieved this qualification and having done so at his age, he represents the future of our industry.”

Aberdeenshire is known for its agricultural shows, but few are as steeped in tradition as the Echt Show. Echt, which lies a quick fifteen miles west of Aberdeen, will host its 159th show on Saturday, 14th July, 2012. Over the years, the show has transformed from a small, local fair into the all-encompassing spectacle that it is today.

With events ranging from agricultural to sporting, there really is something on offer for everyone. Holding true to its farming roots, the Echt Show boasts a variety of livestock competitions, a display of majestic Clydesdale horses, and a vintage tractor exhibit. The sporty will enjoy watching the highland dancing and ‘heavies’ competitions, or may choose to watch the fun at the tug of war.

The young ones will love the funfair and kids races, and everyone will want to spend time at the trade and food stands. A great spectacle is the entertainment evening the Friday night prior to the event. The marquee dance on the Saturday evening following the event is also great fun.

But if all of that doesn’t convince you to get your boots on, then the main attraction surely will.

This year, the Echt Scow is welcoming Blazing Saddles, an exhilarating stunt-riding team who can do more on the backs of galloping horses than most of us can do on firm ground. The Parent-Teacher Organisation at the International School of Aberdeen hosted its first Gala Ball in November 2011.

PTO’s Masterclass in Fundraising

This Ball was a great success thanks to the participation and support of local North East businesses. The PTO selected The Neurological Fund (based at ARI) as the recipient for £10k because one of its students, Joseph Robertson, had received lifesaving surgery at the Neurological Unit earlier in the year. The ISA is honoured to

have this relationship with the Unit as it provides such a vital service to the North-east of Scotland and hope that they can continue to provide support in the future.

Small, medium and large businesses from Aberdeen and as far afield as Dundee participated in this fundraising effort. The PTO at ISA would like to stress that they could not have raised this amount of money for the Unit without the generosity of the local business community.

They thoroughly enjoyed working with them and were grateful for their involvement.

John Byrne > words by SHONA BYRNE

At 72, painter and playwright John Byrne has never been busier so Trend was lucky to get an interview with this charismatic character.

Staged in 1977 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, it won a Fringe First Award. ‘The Slab Boys’ followed hard on its heels premiering at the Traverse Theatre.

Growing up in Paisley his working class background has been a huge asset to his career ‘given the richness of working class culture.’ A graduate of Glasgow School of Art which he got into ‘on merit’ John has no idea where his creativity comes from but he can’t remember a time when he didn’t draw.

‘Both painting and writing gives me great pleasure. I go for long periods doing one thing, working on that full time until it’s finished. I do, however, draw all the characters and very often design the sets and costumes for the productions.

His career started as a painter but he wrote his first theatre piece, ‘Writer’s Cramp’ in 1975, while still exhibiting under the ‘nom de pinceau’ Patrick at London’s Portal Gallery.

While working in Aberdeen I discovered the Rendezvous Gallery and thought it was a wonderful venue. When I was invited to exhibit there I jumped at the chance and was delighted when Aberdeen Art Gallery

purchased my Leafy Self-portrait.

I’m currently doing a series of big watercolours for a third show at the beautiful Fine Art Society in London’s Bond Street in November; I’ve racked up around seven pieces. Some of the work will be shown at Pittenweem Arts Festival this summer.

Engraving a new future for an ancient craft > words by ALISON DANIELS

Hilary Paynter and the Woodend Wood Engravers group are working to bring this historical craft to a wider audience.

Wood engraving is a painstakingly detailed way of making prints by hand. The artist takes a block of wood and slowly removes slivers of the material using a variety of quaintly named, but very sharp, hand tools such as burins, scorpers and spitstickers. It takes a lot of skill and concentration, but the end results are worth it.

Hilary explained, “Wood engraving is the only artform that was invented in Britain. It originated at the end of the 1700s and was used to make very detailed images that were often used to illustrate books and magazines.

Nowadays, it’s more of an artistic than a commercial process”.

“We start with a block of wood. Wood engravers prefer to work with a fine-grained hard wood and the slices we use are made from end-grain wood, where the cuts are made through the trunk as opposed to long grain planks. Boxwood is best - the small, slow-growing timber seen around herb gardens which is used as hedging.

“The design has to be reversed and worked in negative. We cut away everything that is not wanted. If a black line is needed, the white bits each side have to be cut out leaving a sliver of wood to take the ink.

Hilary became involved in wood engraving almost by accident, she added, “I was intrigued and took it up as a secondary subject at art college when I was training as a sculptor,

mainly working in stone. However, when I started a family, stone carving became too difficult to pursue and I spent more time on engraving, not least because it was quieter than stone carving when the baby was asleep!

“It then took over as my main expression of ideas. My work has become finer over the years and I work much more freely. I often work directly on the block with only a rudimentary design. This is risky - once the wood has been removed, it cannot be replaced - but the results are more dynamic.

If you’d like to try wood engraving for yourself, the easiest way to get started is to attend a class or workshop. These are run at Banchory’s Woodend Barn arts centre. Further afield, the Society of Wood Engravers website lists details of courses all over the country.

“I was invited to hold a solo exhibition at Banchory many years ago and ran a workshop. I have been returning to Banchory with an exhibition every couple of years since and the Woodend Wood engravers group has gone from strength to strength.

Hilary’s own work is in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum and the V&A and various city galleries. The biggest collection on-line is at Art Matters, Tenby. The Society of Wood Engravers regularly displays their work at Woodend.

“People who buy wood engravings prefer to purchase signed, limited editions. These are original works of art, with the benefit of being affordable. Black and white can be challenging at first but can be more interesting. People get completely hooked!

The sun-baked capital of the Riviera sits majestic in a protected, glittering bay, stretching along the 200 year old famous ocean front Promenade des Anglais. It has grown up around its two monumental squares, Massena and Garibaldi, giving a nod to the strong influences of both France and Italy on the town. > words by PAULINE RUDGE

It is a lively, energetic town, whilst still retaining an air of elegance and austerity from a bygone era. It is a town of many faces, catering to a wide audience and its museums contain the most important collections of French modern and contemporary art outside Paris.

With only a short hop from the UK it is the perfect destination for even a short break. With plenty to do Nice offers the tourist a plethora of activities. No visit would be possible without a stroll down Promenade des Anglais which bustles with people walking, running, cycling, and rollerblading. It is great for people watching or simply taking in the stunning vista. The pebbled beaches are accessed from here where there are a number of places along the stretch to hire a padded chaise longue.

At the east end of the Promenade des Anglais you can find Cours Saleya Flower Market, a busy tourist area but well worth a visit. Arrive at 6 am but no later than 9am to fully appreciate the hive of activity of the vendors setting up and to avoid the tourist hoards. Not only a flower market it is an excellent place to stock up on locally grown fruit and vegetables as well as finding interesting dressings, honey and mustards. Operating six days a week it is replaced on Mondays by a flea and antiques market. Along the either side of the market there are numerous restaurants and shops.

Cours Saleya is in the beautiful old part of Nice, Vieux Nice. A labyrinth of narrow paved streets, it is a collection of olive-oil dealers, soap sellers, spice merchants, small cafes and churches which nestle among the brightly coloured buildings with their beautiful architecture. It is home to the best restaurants in Nice, which need to be booked early in your stay, or perhaps even before you arrive, as during the summer months they fill up quickly.

In the summer months Nice is extremely hot and overflows with tourists. The best times to visit are April or May or after the summer hoards have returned home at the end of September, beginning of October when the weather is still warm. That said Nice is a perfect destination at any time of the year and it is a place that once visited will be revisited again and again.

You may have wandered past The Grill, thought about going in, and kept on wandering. Or you may never even have thought of going in at all. Well, you’re missing out.

Seriously.

The walls are mahogany panelled, the floor is polished hardwood, the ceiling is decoratively plastered, the bar stretches the full length of the pub, and there are no tables and chairs cluttering up the place.

The Grill sits across the road from the Music Hall, which is exactly where it has sat since it first opened as a restaurant in 1870.

There are high backed, leather benches that line the walls of the room, but the bar is standing only – as it should be – because nothing guarantees a friendly feeling of shared experience quite like a pub that is not divided into booths and tables.

At some early point the full menu was dropped, but the name stuck, and the pub that remains today has – much to its benefit – remained largely unchanged since a refurbishment in 1926.

The history on offer at The Grill doesn’t stop at the interior decoration either -

you can have a dram of one of several single malts that were distilled in the 1930’s, including a 65 year old Macallan that’s still enormously desirable despite being ready for a bus pass.

If, however, you prefer to soak up the atmosphere in a less extravagant way, I recommend just settling in for a while, having a drink, and enjoying one of Aberdeen’s truly traditional experiences.

Little Treasures Reveals its gems On a croft in the heart of the Kemnay countryside is a hidden treasure -- the Grampian Toy and Doll’s House Museum -- run

by Emily Innes. Emily curates the largest collection of doll’s houses in Scotland and has wonderful stories to share about the provenance and history of the exhibits.

When I entered the two large adjoining rooms of the museum, I thought “won’t take too long to get around this.” How wrong could I have been!

Each glass case is crammed with so many tiny and fascinating objects that I became utterly absorbed and soon realised that seeing everything in one visit was probably unrealistic. The doll’s houses on display date from 1865 onwards and are furnished in keeping with their eras. They make for a fascinating social history of changing furnishings and lifestyles.

Expect to find yourself pointing and exclaiming, eager to see if your companions have noticed the same details you have: the doll with the face of Shirley Temple; the gipsy caravan made entirely of matchsticks; the tree house fashioned from a piece of drift wood; the photo of a young girl pulling a doll’s house from the rubble of the blitz, propped up against an identical doll’s house! Boys will love the matchbox cars, the trains and the eye-catching display of American tin buses.

The adjoining shop sells an amazing selection of doll’s houses, furniture and furnishings. It is surprisingly hard to resist buying the teeny tiny cutlery and crockery!

Ciara Ennis may only be fourteen, but she already has such a track record as an athlete, performer and fundraiser that she’s been chosen as one of the people who will carry the Olympic Torch as it lights up the North-east this summer.

In a typical week, Ciara packs in several trips to the gym, swimming club, choir practice, guitar lessons, dancing lessons, piano lessons, drama classes, singing lessons and hours of rehearsals for playing the part of Belle in an upcoming Aurora production of Beauty and the Beast in Huntly in June. She also manages to fit in her classes at The Gordon Schools in Huntly as well as organising fundraising events like busking and ceilidhs.

Ciara was nominated as a torchbearer by her mother, Alisanne, who said, “Ciara works very hard at school and outside school to use the skill she has to raise money and help others”.

Ciara expects to find out which section of the course she’s been assigned to soon, “I run 3 times a week so I am prepared – it’s only 300400 metres, so it’s really not that far. I assume we will get some kind of outfit to wear but that hasn't been unveiled as yet.” There will be a celebration evening on Monday 11 June in Aberdeen and other communities on the route on the 12th.

I am so excited and extremely proud to be nominated and picked to take part in this year’s Olympic Torch Relay. I feel very privileged to be given this opportunity as I am sure there must have been thousands of people nominated. My friends and family have helped me in all my fundraising and performing and I want to thank them all for their support. I am very happy to be representing the North East of Scotland in such a historic event”.

Stephen Innes “I’ve been singing all of my life!” laughs 17 year old aspiring popstar Stephen Innes. “My Dad is a musician; for as long as I can remember I'll sing while he plays piano – usually daft, made up songs. It drives my Mum crazy!”

In 2009 Stephen entered the Inverurie Academy talent competition, performing Jason Mraz's hit "I'm Yours".

“I was really nervous to be honest, a bit worried about what people would think of me standing there singing to a backing track,” Stephen recalls. “But I had a brilliant response; everyone was really enthusiastic. It gave me the confidence to take things further".

Footage of his winning performance made its way onto YouTube and soon Stephen found himself singing his heart out all over the North-east with his set of "mostly pop, soul and r'n'b songs".

Covering some of his favourite artists including Adele, Paolo Nutini, Beyonce and Amy Winehouse he has entertained crowds ranging from local fashion shows to large outdoor events like 'Fyvie Live', sharing a stage with a variety of well known names including Katherine Jenkins, Sandi Thom and Beverly Knight along the way.

"Beverly Knight actually complimented me on my singing," Stephen tells me.

"She was friends with Amy Winehouse and wanted to tell me that she liked my version of 'Rehab'. It was really encouraging."

Stephen received a further boost when he recently reached the final stages of the audition process for new BBC1 show 'The Voice'.

"I couldn't believe I got as far as I did", he says. "I may have narrowly missed the final cut, but I met so many likeminded, talented people with the same aspirations as me that it was still one of the best experiences of my life."

As for the future, Stephen intends to continue working on his own material and put together a live band to accompany him at larger performances.

Stephen will be supporting girl group The Saturdays at Peterhead FC's 'Blue Toon Rox' event, returning to the Fyvie Live line-up and will be performing live at the Trend Awards 2012 at the Marcliffe.

One of the services the team fundraises for in Aberdeen is Corrieneuchin. Corrieneuchin is an abuse recovery service where they provide therapeutic help for children, young people and their families who have been affected by physical, sexual or emotional abuse.

They help the children make sense of their experience; learn how to trust adults and the world again while knowing how to create good boundaries for themselves.

INCHGARTH COMMUNITY CENTRE FUNDRAISER Inchgarth Community Centre held its biggest event, a fundraiser to replace the hall floor which is over 50 years old. Over 200 people attended the red carpet event which saw Aberdeen band ‘5th Avenue’ take to the stage to rock Inchgarth. Various raffle prizes were donated by local Aberdeen businesses leading to the night being a huge success, raising over £6,500!

Fashion Show

Fenner and Coburn held a fashion lunch at Malmaison to showcase its new Spring/Summer collection.

They have recently moved into new premises at 13 Thistle Street where they are now carrying new brands and exclusive pieces, one of which being French brand Vilagallo. The raffle on the day was for Alfie’s Trust, an organisation set up to help raise awareness of a very rare condition, the money goes to the LGDA which funds research into Lymphangiomatosis and Gorham’s Disease.

LAUNCH EVENING 2012 Trend’s Life with Style Awards 2012 got underway with a launch at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa. Previous entrants and newcomers came along to hear Karen Molloy speak on behalf of the judges and last year’s Elite Fashion Retailer winner, Celebrations of Turriff, had Shelia Gammie speak telling everyone what not only winning has meant to them, but what entering achieved for them as a business also.

On a roll

with the ROX boys These Mitchells get everywhere. Here I am in alien territory in the Rox jewellery emporium in Aberdeen’s hustling and bustling Union Square shopping mall and who do I meet but Glaswegian gemmologist Grant Mitchell, founder of the Rox Diamonds and Thrills shopping dynasty in 2001.

He is with his business partner Kyron Keogh, who sounds like he should be Irish but qualified as a surveyor at de Montfort University, Leicester. Whatever could these two men, both born in 1971, have in common to team up? Well, the answer is very simple. They have been pals since they met on childhood holidays in Majorca. “It 86

sounds highly improbable,” says Grant, who attended the prestigious Glasgow Academy and qualified at North Glasgow College, “but it has worked out amazingly well. Our flagship store is in the Argyll Arcade in Glasgow and we have other outlets in that city but we liked the idea of moving into the new Union Square development in Aberdeen. It has proved to be a terrific move and has helped to take our annual turnover to more than £10million.”

Both are family men based in the west of Scotland. Kyron, who is in charge of the dayto-day running of the Rox stores, is married with two children and likes music, cycling and rugby. Grant is married with three children

and says his hobbies are photography, art and travel.

Their proudest moment in business - and they have more than 10,000 diamonds in stock – came last year when they were voted by their peers the UK independent retailers of the year and received the accolade at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. “That was the real icing on the cake,” says Grant, “and follows a similar award in Scotland.”

The lads try to bring a bit of fizz to the shopping experience so look out for party times ahead in Aberdeen.
