6 | WELCOME

It’s spring! It’s the season of renewal, regeneration and new beginnings, so it’s time for us all to cast off the gloom of winter and look forward to lighter nights, longer days, warmer temperatures (Ooooh, double figures!) and all that’s new and fresh. Traditional wisdom advises us to 'Ne’er cast a clout till May be oot!', but our advice is to embrace the new season with gusto. Pack your anorak away, chuck your winter boots under the bed and let your hair down. Reinvent yourself, wear a colour you’ve never worn before, smile at strangers, have a day out, take the weekend off and live a more interesting life. When you’re 104 and looking back over your achievements, having spent your weekends catching up on the chores shouldn’t feature in the highlights. There are very few statues erected to those who always got the ironing done! Blow off the cobwebs and explore the possibilities the new season offers. Naturally, we’re here to help; you’ll find everything from fabulous fashion finds to days out with the kids, great places to eat or grab a weekend away, art, music, places to visit and new things to experience. Everything’s there, it just needs you!

GLENCRAFT’S LANG STRACHT SITE GETS ROYAL APPROVAL

HRH The Princess Royal officially opened the Lang Stracht factory and showroom of Aberdeen-based Glencraft, manufacturer and supplier of high-quality, handmade mattresses, on 19 February, which is apt, since the social enterprise have provided mattresses for four generations of the Royal family at Balmoral. Glencraft moved into the new premises in July 2015, which has allowed for a more streamlined manufacturing process and an improved working environment for all employees, around 80% of whom are disadvantaged, disabled or visually impaired. Since the expansion, Glencraft have secured a contract with major retailer Argos to supply their mattresses and beds, as well as being named Social Enterprise of the Year at the 2015 UK Private Business Awards. www.glencraft.co.uk

SEX DISCRIMINATION STILL COSTING EMPLOYERS A leading employment law expert has warned that sex discrimination claims could leave employers facing large fines. The problem is avoidable, says Empire CEO, Steve Cook, ‘Firstly, an employer must have discrimination and harassment policies in place that address sex discrimination including sexual harassment,

pregnancy discrimination and family responsibility discrimination. Employment policies should be applied in a gender-neutral manner, and promotion and training should be offered fairly and equally to men and women and employment decisions should never be made on the basis of gender’. www.empirehr.com

Why are we not protecting our sons from HPV? Most people know that HPV vaccine protects girls against cervical cancer and is offered free to all girls at school. But not many know that boys are equally at risk from contracting HPV related cancers, and that vaccinating boys can protect them too. More than 2,000 cases of cancer in men each year in the UK are caused by HPV. In 2012, 67% of new cases of oral cancer were in men. According to Cancer Research UK, figures are significantly higher in Scotland. Boys are not on a government programme for the vaccine. In theory, if girls are immunised, boys will be protected. However if a young man has any form of sex with a woman over 20 odd, she is unlikely to have been vaccinated. He is therefore at risk of contracting HPV and affiliated cancers. Although not on the NHS, we can still protect our sons. Private GP practice YourGP in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, offer GARDASIL - the only vaccine that protects against four types of HPV and used by the NHS for girls. Costing £160 per jag, 2 or 3 doses are required

depending on age. It should be administered as early as possible (from 9) to be effective. YourGP are well practiced at vaccinating children, keeping them, and the parents, calm and relaxed! They offer the full range of children and baby jags including Chickenpox vaccine, Meningitis B, Hepatitis B, all travel immunisations and Yellow Fever. They also carry out a wide range of comprehensive health medicals and sexual health checks giving rapid treatment as required. To find out more about HPV vaccination for boys, any other child vaccines or health concerns visit www.your-gp.com call 0131 225 5656 or 01224 040080 or email reception@your.gp

I’ve won Galaxy Girls Universe twice in bikini class over 35 and came 3rd in the UK Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation in bikini class last year', Anastasia enthused. THE AESTHETIC ROOM: NEW LASER TECHNOLOGY FOR TATTOO REMOVAL... Louise and Ellen at The Aesthetic have responded to the increasing demand for tattoo removal by introducing the first Clinical Derma Q-Switched laser in town. Unlike some surgical, chemical and other treatments available, it is now possible to remove all shades of ink, including stubborn oranges and yellows - eradicating the signs of a misspent youth! Louise has extensive experience of laser tattoo removal and is hugely impressed by the new machine, saying, 'The Clinical Derma laser makes tattoo removal simple. After a free consultation, we can remove unwanted tattoos using the laser to fire a beam of light through the skin in extremely short pulses. This allows the gradual and natural bodily removal of the pigment over a series of treatments. As a guide, most Indian ink amateur tattoos should respond with between three and ten treatments. Coloured professional tattoos usually take between eight and twelve treatments. In general, our costs range from £50 to £400 per treatment per tattoo, though if more than one tattoo is being removed a discount may apply.

Ellen added, 'During a treatment session, which can last from five minutes to an hour, we cool the skin to minimise stinging and the minor discomfort that some clients experience. It’s important that the treated area should be protected from the sun. We recommend the use of sun block before, during and for six months after the period over which the tattoo is being removed and the use on sunbeds is prohibited.' Both Ellen and Louise are fully qualified to offer this new form of laser tattoo removal treatment. Louise continued, 'Laser treatment is considered to be the safest method of tattoo removal. The Q-Switched lasers are part of a new generation which neither burn nor cut the skin’s surface. They have been used extensively in medical practice for a number of years and The Aesthetic Room at The House is one of the few aesthetic centres in the UK to offer this treatment.'

It’s a deliciously decadent approach to preparing for an evening of painting the town red in their brand new salon. Talking of polish, you can have a manicure at the Make Me Over three station nail bar or pamper your tootsies at one of the salon’s brilliant new pedicure stations. Better yet, you can relax and have a laugh in the House’s spa lounge area, complete with some drinks and nibbles, while admiring how well you all scrub when you have your own hair and makeup artist and manicurist at your beck and call. From head to toe, you’re good to go with the House’s Make Me Over service.

We carry an extensive selection of wedding rings in store and are committed to ensuring that your chosen ring is perfect.

ring. For men it is important to try on each of the metals and consider the pros and cons of each. Platinum remains a popular metal and in recent times palladium has also been a sought after choice for men.

A good place to start is choosing the metal for your wedding ring with platinum, white, yellow and rose gold and palladium available. We will talk you though each metal to help you make your decision.

The next step is choosing the shape; a classic straight band of varying width, a band set with diamonds or something made to fit your engagement ring. Our ‘made to fit’ service allows us to tailor a ring to your exact requirements and all wedding rings purchased from Finnies can be engraved to make your purchase truly unique.

We generally advise ladies to choose the same metal as their engagement

Coppa Coffee

Old Post Office Tea Room

The Coffee Apothecary

If you’re looking for a good place to catch up with friends over coffee, to talk business over a working lunch, or simply to relax and take in some professional artwork with a piece of homemade shortbread, then city-based Coppa offers a little something for everyone. Their chocolatey cappuccino will perk you up for an afternoon of work, and their larger than life slices of Victoria sponge make for a perfect 3pm sugar refill. If you’re having a particularly challenging day, a Coppa cup of tea will see away any daytime drama - even the most ardent of tea connoisseurs will find themselves quietly supping away on a Coppa brew, their silence speaking a thousand words of approval.

Nestled at the foot of Bennachie, this quaint little tea room is a welcome retreat after a hard day’s traversing the Scottish plains (or not!). With a cosy snuggery and countryside views to enjoy with a vintage teapot brew, the tea shop is an endless source of intrigue for visitors, with its nooks and crannies brimming with books, ornaments, displays, and savouries and jams to purchase. Its guests are spoiled with continental inspired sandwiches and mouth-watering fine pieces. From the salted caramel chocolate brownies to homemade marmalade fruit loaf, you’re sure to be in fine piece heaven. If you’re preparing for a mountain climb, you’ll certainly be well fuelled after a stop at the Old Post Office Tea Room.

Visitors to this Aladdin’s cave of tea and coffee would be forgiven for thinking they were in Italy, given this cafe’s dedicated array of caffeinated hot beverages. They take their drinks seriously in the Coffee Apothecary, but they have much fun serving them, with many of their sophisticated coffees served in quirky glass beakers. The caffeine is amiably washed down with a chic and filling lunch menu, and is followed by much fawning over the range of dessert goodies in the cake cabinet. The carrot cake is divinely soft and crumbly, and the banana and chocolate muffin looks almost too pretty to eat, but its zesty icing and sponge combination won’t hold you back for too long!

ASHLEY DANIEL OF

Milton Brasserie

Ashley has been Head Chef at the Milton Brasserie at Crathes for the last six months, but she’s already seen the new menu prove popular with the restaurant’s many fans... 'Over the years, the Milton Brasserie has been popular for a family day out, during the week or especially at weekends. There’s plenty to do at Milton of Crathes, from visiting the shops and art gallery to taking a stroll by the river, then rounding the visit off with a bit of a treat for lunch or some tea and cakes here.'

'Our new menus build on our reputation for traditional Scottish food using the best, freshest seasonal ingredients. I’ve always been passionate about home cooked food, this is reflected our approach of making everything freshly from scratch wherever possible. First thing each morning, for example, Mary, our resident baker, makes her home bakes and scones. Mary’s been at the Milton for the past 15 years and her scones are legendary amongst the local community!

'We change the menu four times a year, to make the most of game, meat, fish, vegetables and fruit as it comes into season. That way we use the best ingredients that have reached their peak in terms of quality and taste. All the chefs sit down together and bounce ideas of each other, this helps form the basis of the menu. That said, our fish and chips and Cullen Skink are so popular that there would probably be a riot if we took them off the menu!

ASHLEY’S SESAME SALMON WITH GINGER-SOY DRESSING Ingredients (Serves 2) > 1 garlic clove > 2 tablespoon rice vinegar > 1 tablespoon pureed ginger root > 1 pinch dried chilli flakes > 2 salmon fillets > 2 tablespoons sesame seeds For the dressing (Serves 2) > 60ml Soy sauce > 2 teaspoons brown sugar > 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger > 3 teaspoons sesame oil

Method 1 | Combine the garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, pureed ginger and chili flakes in a bowl. Add the salmon and leave it to marinade in the fridge. It’s best to leave it for a few hours or even overnight, but it’ll need at least an hour. 2 | Preheat oven to 375oF or 190oC. Mix the dressing ingredients together in a small bottle or jar, making sure the lid is tight, then set aside. 3 | Pour the sesame seeds onto a plate or a shallow flat bottomed dish, shaking it lightly so that the seeds form a single layer. Lay salmon fillets face down in sesame seeds to coat the top. Place the crusted salmon on a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. 4 | Bake for 15-20 minutes in the over, depending on fillet thickness. Decorate the plate and salmon with the dressing. Serve with buttered new potatoes and seasonal salad.

We get through 165 million cups of tea each day in the UK, so it makes sense to invest in some really great mugs and a fabulous teapot or two. Try some leaf tea grown on one of the Scottish tea estates if you want to impress guests. China cups may be more traditional for a dainty afternoon tea, but there are times when only a mug of strong tea and a big slab of cake will do.

66 | HOMES. GARDENS & INTERIORS

Beechgrove Garden has been on our screens for the last 38 years, and celebrates its 1000th edition this year. Produced by Tern TV for BBC Scotland, it is the longest running contract in the BBC and whilst it may be gentle and ‘couthy’ in its presentation, this homegrown success has got serious street cred! Jim McColl started with the programme in 1978 and celebrated his 80th birthday last year. Carole Baxter clocks up 30 years this year and together with George Anderson and Chris Beardshaw these expert gardeners have almost 200 years of experience between them. It is an amazing achievement for any programme to be continually commissioned by the BBC for as long as this and clearly that success has to be down to the BG team both on and off camera, but who is the real power behind this success story? I went to take a sneak peak behind the scenes at the Beechgrove Garden here in Aberdeen

and to meet Gwyneth Hardy, the programme’s Series Producer, Director and Co-founder of Tern. GWYNETH, YOU HAVE BEEN THE DIRECTOR AND SERIES PRODUCER FOR BEECHGROVE GARDEN FOR OVER 20 YEARS, WHAT DOES THAT ROLE ENTAIL? As S.P. the buck stops with me but Beechgrove is very much a team game where my specific role is to manage the production processes. Creatively I set the tone and the concept of the programme and directing-wise I pull all the threads together to try and make it work on camera.

WORDS BY KIRSTY MCLEAN

WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL INGREDIENTS THAT KEEP THE PROGRAMME RELEVANT AND SO POPULAR WITH ITS VIEWERS? BG is a practical, get-your-hands-dirty gardening programme presented by real experts. We are unashamedly cheap but very cheerful. We try to make Beechgrove everyman’s gardening. We show the successes and the failures of every aspect of growing in difficult conditions, in an honest way so that the viewer is gaining real knowledge. Viewers know they can trust what they are being told because it’s been tried and tested by experts.

The BG team will be giving the garden a few nips and tucks and in some cases a full facelift! New to the programme will be Gardening on a Budget, How to Grow a Gardener and the whole team will be on the road for the new BG Roadshows stopping at some wonderful locations: Nairn, Strathkinnes (near St. Andrews) and Gairloch. A thousand programmes and still growing!

Anne Littlejohn and Gavin Cooper of Raeburn Christie Clark & Wallace offer an expert view on the local property market... For the property market, each Spring marks the start of a new season as both buyers and sellers emerge from the winter months and start to put their plans into place, whether it’s a first home, a bigger place for the family or downsizing to something more manageable. The current economic climate in Aberdeen has had a slowing effect upon the property market, leading to less competition for properties than there has been in recent years. Consequently, prices have stopped rising rapidly, properties are taking longer to sell and there is more property on the market at all price levels. Many sellers have revised price expectations which means buyers face less negotiation to reach a settlement that is acceptable to both seller and purchaser. For those considering a new build, housebuilders are offering heavy discounts and attractive incentives, such as free flooring, part exchange opportunities and Land and Business Transaction Tax contributions.

Mortgage lenders continue to offer favourable interest rates and deals, with lower deposits required, making buying more affordable for first time buyers. Fixed Rate mortgages allow for longer-term budget planning. The UK Government has also introduced the Help to Buy ISA which allows first time buyers to invest up to £12,000 with a Government bonus of 25% that can be used towards the deposit for a new property. Raeburn Christie Clark & Wallace is a full service legal firm, able to provide you with not only independent financial advice, but also impartial legal advice on your purchase whether of an existing property or new build. To discuss buying or selling a property, pop in to one of our offices, or call 01224 564636. www.raeburns.co.uk Aberdeen - Banchory - Ellon - Inverurie - Stonehaven

School Charity Donation makes SENSE As many oil and gas companies cut back on community or charity spend due to the current challenging industry climate, downhole solutions provider to the global energy industry Well-SENSE Technology Ltd, has demonstrated that financial donations aren’t the only way to make a difference. Well-SENSE designed, constructed and donated a sandpit to Tullynessle School, near Alford in Aberdeenshire, in support of the outdoor learning curriculum for 45 nursery and school children. The three by four metre sand play area, which was tailor-made to fit the school’s playground, also incorporates access for disabled children. Dan Purkis, technology director at WellSENSE said, ‘The best, most innovative and creative ideas happen when people aren’t restricted to a classroom or office

environment. We are passionate about encouraging children to learn in a way that captures their imagination. ‘School children are the workforce of tomorrow and it’s vitally important to enthuse and spark an inquisitive nature from as young an age as possible, wherever their passions lie. Hopefully, Well-SENSE’s efforts with Tullynessle School demonstrate that some time and dedicated effort are all that’s required to make a positive impact.’ Tullynessle School’s head teacher, Valerie Goodlad said, ‘We were delighted to receive support from Well-SENSE to advance our outdoor learning activity offering, which is an integral part of our day-to-day curriculum. It means so much to the children at Tullynessle School, all of whom are so very happy, I’m sure it will provide much enjoyment for many years to come.’

As we approached the spectacular walled port city of Dubrovnik along a precarious cliff-side road, our driver informed us that the Adriatic coast is said to resemble the Mediterranean before tourism really took off. Certainly the first impression of sparklingly clear azure waters and white-walled buildings with picturesque rustic tiles seemed to bear that out.

ADVERTISEMENTS WORDS BY JAN LEATHAM| 81

Our first port of call was the obligatory open-topped bus tour, followed by a trip around the top of the 9th century city walls which is definitely worth doing (just not in the heat of the midday sun...). The walls are just under 2km long and afford pictureperfect vistas in every direction, including down into the Old Town itself. As you make your way round, you may experience a spot of déjà vu, particularly if you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, as this was the original film location for the popular series. Both guided walking tours and Game of Thrones tours are available. The Old Town has magical marble streets, the magnificent Rector’s Palace and contemplative Franciscan Monastery, Big Onofrio’s fountain (perfect for refreshing water bottles) and the thought-provoking War Photo exhibition. Easily walked around in a morning, the UNESCO World Heritage site has plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

Definitely worth a trip is the short ferry ride to the wooded island of Lokrum, just 40 minutes away from the old port. The island is easily walked around and is home to many peacocks and a botanical garden, as well as being the perfect place to find a secluded swimming or sunbathing spot on the rocky shores. There is a café and bar on the island, but this is a perfect opportunity for a picnic. Those in search of more island adventures will probably want to visit the beautiful Elafiti archipelago. One thing you can be almost certain of in Dubrovnik is a sunset, and whether you choose a private cruise, a kayaking tour, or a G & T in the Buza Bar clinging onto the cliff face, there is something eternally romantic about watching the sun go down with your favourite person.

We’ve all been there. Whether it’s teenage angst because the love of your life likes someone else, or the awkwardness of realising that you prefer your loved one’s absence to their presence. It’s the realisation that Tammy Wynette had it all wrong and that rather than standing by your man, you want to crush him with a steamroller. Whatever you’ve been through, it’s nothing like the historical breakups featured in Jennifer Wright’s It Ended Badly. It’s a beguiling trawl through the breakups of some of history’s most gloriously unhinged lovers. Pity poor Poppea, humiliated by Nero who replaced her with his favourite eunuch who he dressed in her clothes. Socially awkward, particularly if the eunuch looked better in the dress than she did. Eleanor of Aquitaine stars in a Dynasty-esque tale of what happens when an overachieving first wife gets thrown over for a sweet-natured unchallenging mistress. Gathering her sons to her side, she literally started a war with her errant husband.

Jennifer Wright has managed to combine thorough historical research with amusing insight and a fabulously gossipy tone. She dishes the dirt on Lucretia Borgia, Norman Mailer, Oscar Wilde, Alma Mahler and Edith Wharton. Lesser known lovers also shine, like Timothy Dexter, an idiot who somehow became immensely wealthy, then went around telling everyone his wife was dead, advertising his estates for sale so he could rid himself of the ghost. Divorce might have been simpler, but this was a bloke who once gave a speech in French to an English speaking audience, despite not speaking any French. Perfect reading whether you’re going through a break up or in a happy relationship. For a start, it’ll keep your beloved on their toes should you leave it on the sofa! Available to order from bookshops or available on Amazon for £13.48.

Karen Hadjitofi found her love of art rekindled as her family grew up... 'I grew up in Glasgow and was lucky enough to graduate from the Glasgow School of Art with a degree in Graphic Design. After working in design for a few years, I moved to Aberdeen with my husband and my focus shifted to bringing up our family. Back in 2009, I took part in the North East Open Studios for the first time which rekindled my passion for art and I loved meeting other artists too', Karen enthused. 'I love walking in the country and in the city’s parks as well. I gather a lot of information in my head, then work with preliminary sketches and my own photographs. A lot of my smaller watercolours are from my imagination, but based on my memories and senses. The natural world and all its colours, shapes, textures and patterns is a constant inspiration, as is the work of artists such as Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt and M.C. Escher.

In recent years I’ve exhibited in local galleries in and around Aberdeen and have a range of cards which are available in shops from Orkney to the Falkland Islands. I’m currently working on a series of paintings of the Victoria and Westburn Parks in Aberdeen for an exhibition in the Belvidere Gallery in Rosemount at the beginning of May. I hope to raise awareness of the various voluntary groups that support the council in keeping these parks looking beautiful. 'I’m also taking part in ArtAboyne in July and in NEOS in September, showing jointly with two friends near Fourdon. My work can be purchased in the Jack Tierney Gallery in Cults, The Milton Gallery at Crathes and the Belvidere Gallery, and I’m always happy to discuss commissions'. www.karenhadjitofi.com www.newleafcards.com

Most of us will have attempted to play an instrument at some stage, but we often let it slide when faced with exams, work, or a busy family and social life. If you’ve ever wanted to pick up where you left off, then the Aberdeen Concert Band may be just what you’re looking for.

The band started life 16 years ago as the Northfield Community Band, but has since evolved into a city wide group of enthusiastic musicians who play for the love of music and the fun of playing together at concerts and charity events across the region.

night at Northfield Church on Byron Crescent in Northfield from 7.15 to 9.15pm. The Concert Band also tries to teach beginners who want to play, but as a charity they have very restricted means so more experienced new members are welcome.

The band members of the Aberdeen Concert Band are as diverse as their musical programme. You’ll find everyone from teenagers to retired folks playing a new programme of musical delights under the directorship of Eric Kidd. A typical programme spans work from the musicals, jazz, film scores, classical and pop pieces, all played with great verve.

You can see the band in action at various events over the spring and summer season, starting with a concert for the Woman’s Guild on the 9th of May at Byron Church. There’s a full listing on the band’s Facebook page, but they are always keen to hear from event organisers about opportunities to perform or from potential new band members.

If you’re interested in joining, you’ll need to be Grade 3 or above and the expert tuition will bring you up to speed in no time. Rehearsals are held each Monday

Some of us might not associate Aberdeen with iconic structures or inspirational architects, but we have a surprising number of interesting buildings dotted round the city and beyond.

From the Georgian frontage of Union Street, which cost so much that the city declared bankruptcy back in 1817, to the perpendicular gothic grandeur of Marischal College and new buildings like the striking new libraries at both Aberdeen University and RGU, there’s plenty to look at. Wherever you find yourself, Aberdeen’s Society of Architects is hoping we’ll all stop and look up at our surroundings this April as part of the Festival of Architecture. The festival is a key part of the 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. Aberdeen Society of Architects has created a packed programme of events for the city throughout April that promises to inspire and capture the imagination. Catherine McKeown, President of ASA and director of Aberdeen’s Festival of Architecture 2016 said, 'Architecture, like other art

A NUMBER OF ICONIC ABERDEEN BUILDINGS HAVE MADE IT INTO THE TOP 100 BUILDINGS IN SCOTLAND AND WILL FEATURE IN THE MAJOR TOURING EXHIBITION, SCOTSTYLE... forms, is an integral part of our culture. We celebrate the talent of artists so let’s celebrate the work of the many talented architects who work locally and across Scotland.' Following its official launch at Aberdeen’s Pentland Gallery, the Festival of Architecture will include: a series of inspirational lectures hosted by world-leading architects and iconic designers in conjunction with 57'10, the student group at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, a selection of city walks and a mini filmfestival at the Belmont, including some rarely seen archive footage of the city’s architectural history. You can find out more by checking the www.fao2016.com or visiting the Look Again mirrored pavilion designed by a group of RGU students, which will be located in the Castlegate and will act as an information point during the festival.

Catherine continued, 'For anyone keen to explore Aberdeen’s architectural heritage there’s an abundance of buildings to explore. Perhaps most predictably are the grand castles and granite buildings scattered across the city and shire. Marischal College, completed in 1906, is the second largest granite building in the world and what makes it more special is the fantastic refurbishment it has undergone to become Aberdeen City Council headquarters. It’s a great example of an historic building being successfully refurbished for reuse in modern times. 'At the other end of the spectrum is the Marine Operations Centre at Aberdeen Harbour; a perfect marriage of form and function. 'A number of iconic Aberdeen buildings have made it into the top 100 Buildings in Scotland and will feature in the major touring exhibition, Scotstyle and a superb new book, including the Bon Accord Baths, St Mary’s Church and Aberdeen War Memorial and Cowdray Hall. 'Traditional, modern, award-winning, sustainable – Aberdeen has it all when it comes to architecture. We hope our Festival will inspire residents to become more engaged with their surroundings. It is a festival for everyone - remember it is your city, your environment, your built heritage - so please go out, embrace all your city has to offer in this very special year - go and enjoy it!'

In this age of social media with so many eagerly tweeting every detail of their day, from breakfast choice to how many reps they did at the gym, it is almost impossible for anything to remain a mystery. So when we turned up for our session at Breakout Games Aberdeen without a clue what to expect, I was genuinely excited. Breakout Games, located in The Arches just behind Union Square, is a real-life escape game, a concept born of an encouraging trend to take what starts as a sedentary video game, and turn it into a physical challenge that requires patience, observation, critical thinking and cooperation. As someone who is admittedly lacking in one or two of these traits, I was glad to learn that it is a group activity so I recruited my own crew of experienced gamers - my children. Without giving too much away, the adventure begins when you and your team are taken to a room and presented with a scenario. The scenario varies in theme and degree of difficulty

depending on which room you have chosen to play in, but suffice it to say that they all involve being locked in and then forced to use your nous to identify clues, crack codes, and determine what information is and is not pertinent to making your escape - and all before the clock runs out.

In the shortest 47 minutes I have ever experienced, I learned that a shared goal can create a common ground for even the most varied group of personalities. We began as five people scratching our heads but soon individual strengths were shining through and every single one of them played a role in our eventual breakout. Admittedly, the youthful minds fared better than mine, with its tendency to grossly overcomplicate things, but that only added to the entertainment value.

Whether you go to Breakout Games as part of a family outing or a team building event, the only thing you will want to do once you break free is get locked up again.

In 1892 Aberdeen Central Library was erected on Rosemount Viaduct in an elevated position giving it an unparalleled outlook over the city it was built to serve. Having been witness to the comings and goings for the 124 years since, it is no wonder that this three storey Renaissance building is now the guardian of a treasure trove of history on Aberdeen and the surrounding area. The Local Studies Collection, located within the top-floor Reference Centre, is the legacy of George Milne Fraser, an expert

on the North-east and the City Librarian for the first 38 years of the 20th century. Today, the collection is an enviable resource that boasts a vast array of documented history in a variety of formats, some available from the comfort of your own home. Whether you are looking into your own family history or researching for a school assignment, here you can scan through original newspaper clippings, local publications, government transcripts, parish registers and area maps, some of which date back to the 1600s. If pictures are worth more to you there is

an extensive collection of photographs including the George Washington Wilson archive. Best of all, there are knowledgeable librarians on hand to guide you through the wealth of information that is available. If you simply cannot find the time to get into the library, the Silver City Vault is an ongoing project of the Local Studies Collection, aiming to upload as many of its available images as possible to the internet, making a global endeavour of Aberdeen’s local history.

These days, a lot of people consider Google to be the oracle on all things but when it comes to local history, nothing can compete with a library that has dedicated its own history to preserving it. Besides, a computer screen just cannot convey history quite like the feel and smell of a stained old bit of newspaper. www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/localstudies www.silvercityvault.org.uk WORDS BY COURTNEY O'GRADY

If you’ve struggled with the slimmer cut trouser these last few years, breathe a sigh of relief. The wider leg has returned. A wider cut on a chino or similar lighter weight cotton is ideal. It will even work on a more casual suit.

As we continue our march towards the promise of better weather, let’s take this opportunity to look at this year’s spring/summer trends. Green and khaki dominate this season’s palette, but white, grey and yellow also feature. Grey should be used sparingly and in contrast with a brighter hue. Strong colours bring a vibrancy that matches the weather but beware; they are not the most practical choice and need to be managed to ensure they don’t overpower your look. Rather than going head to toe, use them as accent

colours, they lend themselves well to accessorizing an outfit.

Jackets should be lightweight. A Harrington or bomber jacket is a sound choice. If the mercury is struggling to rise, then layer up. A denim jacket underneath or a lightweight suede jacket on top is ideal. With the inevitability of rain, the fashion savvy Scottish male’s most practical layer will be a lightweight unpatterned anorak.

Use shades of colour to your advantage. They contrast and lend more definition to a look. With green being the big season colour, consider olives and jades, which suit most skin tones. Teal and turquoise will provide further contrast with hints of blue, and khaki compliments both darker greens and denim. Given this year’s colour pallete, it should not come as a surprise to hear that a military style features heavily. Top pockets on shirts and lightweight ‘shackets’ are an emerging trend and

a particular favourite. If you like a short sleeve on a shirt, consider a Cuban collar (main image) which will extend that beach look even further.

If you find yourself at a loose end one weekend or during the school holidays, then head up to the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig, where the whole family will delight in a chance to see some really interesting creatures close up.

If you like twisty, scenic routes then head out through Ballater or Alford, then take the Cock Bridge to Tomintoul road, and then head through Grantown-on-Spey, then about 7 miles south of Aviemore where you’ll find the Highland Wildlife Park. You can also take the train from Aberdeen to Aviemore, changing at Inverness, though at almost 7 hours travelling time for the return journey, it’s a long day for smaller children.

However you get there, the Highland Wildlife Park offers a brilliant day out for the whole family, without being as rapaciously expensive as some other attractions. You’ll appreciate the fabulous Cairngorms scenery while exploring the 85 hectare park which is home to over 30 cold weather adapted species ranging from the fabulously fluffy to the ferociously fierce. The major attractions include polar bears, European grey wolves, Amur Tigers (formerly known as Siberian tigers), lynx and snow leopards as well as appealing little bundles of fur like adorable Arctic foxes, red pandas and the increasingly rare Scottish wildcat. Down by the café, you’ll find an enclosure with a playful troupe of around 40 Japanese macaques, ranging from swaggering dominant males to tiny infants clutching their mothers and teenagers grooming each other. All the animals have larger enclosures than you’d find at a normal zoo and it’s worth walking round several times as you’ll spot something new on each circuit.

WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

For a donation of at least £1 a head, you can ride along with one of the park’s staff, learning more about their work and the creatures they care for as you drive slowly round the roadways past small herds of elk, Bactrian camels, deer, yak and hardy little groups of Przewalski’s wild horses. This is the next best thing to bringing David Attenborough with you, as it’s clear how much affection the staff have for their charges, and it lets you off the hook when replies to, ‘why is that camel trying to sit on the other one?’ are required. This also supports the work of the park, which is part of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. They also run Edinburgh Zoo and, in common with all other public zoos in the UK, receive absolutely no funding from the government. There are picnic facilities, though the café is reasonably priced and does surprising good soup and bread, as well as good cakes and sandwiches. There’s even a small gift shop, but none of the

hard sell and pester power merchandising you find in many attractions aimed at children. At £48 for a family ticket for two adults and two children, it’s less expensive than many activities and will hold kids and adults alike spellbound throughout their visit. Children of two and under go free. www.highlandwildlifepark.org.uk

Emma Leiper Finlayson has energy, drive and commitment and Children 1st, Scotland’s national children’s charity, is all the better for it.

WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

The 31-year-old has been its regional fundraising manager at 36 Carden Place, Aberdeen, since last year and says, ‘I knew I was never going to be a world leader or prime minister but as a fundraiser I’m able to make a little difference to the world in my own way'. She joined Children 1st from jobs at her much-loved alma mater, Aberdeen University where she took an MA in History and M.Litt in Renaissance Studies. ‘I worked for the university’s fundraising development trust and, prior to that, the students association. It was a big wrench to move on but I wanted to work for a charity that I really believed in and one about which I could speak openly and passionately,’ she adds.

support. She says, ‘Many youngsters referred to the charity have to wait up to a year to receive support from our project workers which is an incredibly frustrating situation’. Undaunted, Emma is motoring ahead with various fundraisers, including the charity’s flagship event, the 29th Touch of Tartan Ball at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom on Friday 18 November. ‘We bucked the trend last year by raising a record £140,000,’ she says, ‘so we are hoping for more of the same.’ You can buy a table of 12 for £1,800 or a table of six for £900. You can also help the cause by donating gold items which goldsmith and engraver Malcolm Appleby will melt down to create the iconic Banchory Bangle for the 40th time.

I wanted to work for a charity that I really believed in and one about which I could speak openly and passionately. ‘At Children 1st we try to help children and young people from all backgrounds, classes and areas to recover from abuse, neglect or trauma. Nobody likes to talk about it, but abuse does happen in Aberdeen and sadly it’s more prevalent than any of us like to think. We may not all be parents, but we were all children, and none of us want to think about what it would have been like growing up having suffered an unimaginable experience such as abuse. That’s why our work is so important. We can’t change a child’s past, but we can help change their future.’ Emma’s enthusiasm is tempered by the current challenging economic climate which means that Children 1st is unable to reach out immediately to all the children who need one-to-one recovery

Children 1st will benefit from the proceeds of Trend's Afternoon Tea Garden Party at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa on 22 April and there is a lunch at the same venue on 13 June, organised by the Aberdeen Action Group, chaired by Juliette Paton. Away from work, what does Emma enjoy? ‘I am a keen writer,’ she says, ‘and in a future life I aspire to live out my days in Venice, getting the novel I have inside of me out onto a laptop as I sip coffee and look out the window of my canal-view Venetian apartment.’ Nice dream, eh? 36 Carden Pl, Aberdeen AB10 1UP Tel: 01224 251150 aberdeencity@children1st.org.uk www.children1st.org.uk
