varicose veins at the Aberdeen Clinic

“I am overjoyed with the results. All the unsightly veins have gone and I no longer feel self-conscious wearing shorts.”

P

atient experiences like this are now common after modern minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins but were unheard of just a few years ago when treatment was limited to surgery and support stockings Between 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 adults in the UK have varicose veins. They are more common with certain conditions and almost half of all pregnant women will develop varicose veins. Varicose veins can cause your legs to ache and interfere with the things that you enjoy doing like running and exercise in general. For many the appearance of varicose veins or spider veins can also look unsightly and make you feel self-conscious about baring your legs during the summer months. Mr. Stuart Suttie, Consultant at the Aberdeen Clinic says ‘Varicose veins are amongst the commonest reasons patients come to see me. We are able to treat varicose veins with minimally invasive techniques such

as radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound guided injection of foam. These techniques have revolutionised the recovery from varicose vein treatment.’ Despite the fact that so many people have varicose veins they receive little in the way of medical attention due to many NHS organisations now only treating the 10% of cases which would be regarded as medically significant i.e. skin changes and signs of chronic venous insufficiency. The multi-disciplinary team at the Aberdeen Clinic is expert at helping patients select the optimal treatment for their varicose veins. After a one stop assessment your Consultant will discuss the results of your scan and tailor a treatment plan specifically for you. You can then benefit from a walk-in-walk-out treatment delivered by your specialist consultant at the Aberdeen Clinic. As a result varicose vein problems can be a thing of the past after a simple cost effective out-patient procedure.

ISSUE N0. 71 | AUG/SEP 19

FROM THE

EDITOR Welcome to our August and September issue of Trend. We’re hoping for an Indian Summer of warm, hazy days that stretch into October’s mellow mists and dry rustling leaves. This time of year is about embracing the opportunity to spend time outdoors with friends and family. Bring back the family picnic, have a garden party or just give the barbecue another outing or two. With NEOS and the Comedy Festival, there’s plenty to lift your spirits. Spend a day visiting some of the North-east’s most talented artists and designermakers in their own studios and workshops from Johnshaven to the Moray Coast, poke around some superb gardens that open under the Scotland’s Gardens Scheme, or catch some great live stand up at venues across the city. Unlikely as it seems, Christmas is already on our radar here at Trend! We have three festive events already on the calendar, so it’s worth booking early. First up, we have our afternoon Christmas Fayre at the Marcliffe on 10 November, which always gets the season off to a great start.

Then it’s off to Edinburgh on our special shopping coach on 13 November. Grab a couple of friends and have a fun day getting your Christmas shopping done in one fell swoop, whether you’re heading for Jenners or the galleries and little boutiques of Stockbridge. Lastly, we’re back at the Marcliffe on 29 November for Bubbles and Baubles, a three-course lunch with a glass of fizz on arrival and a goody bag to take home. Still, let’s not think about Christmas quite yet. Instead, let’s make the most of the summer. Head out to explore the hills, wander round some castle ruins, visit a museum, read in the park. Stroll the beaches or treat yourself to lunch at a new café. That’s the thing about living here. There’s so much to do, so much to see, that we often overlook our superb natural setting and the attractions of both Aberdeen and the Shire’s towns and villages. Make the most of living here! Love Everyone at Trend x

come to your senses

F

rom the moment we enter this world, our senses are bombarded – one minute nothing, and then bright lights, prodding hands, excited shrieks and a whole host of strange odours. And the barrage just carries on as we move through our lives in a constant stream of frenzied distractions, each with its own unique sensory fingerprint, until at some point we do not even realise it is happening. But what would it be like if you could just push the pause button and return to the muffled silence of the womb? Recently, I was able to find out. The Urban Wellness Hub in Bridge of Don has opened Scotland’s only purpose-built float room. If you have never heard of such a thing, it is a fullyenclosed space that has been specifically designed to give your body a break from the constant stimulation of your environment. With a base of around 300 millimetres of heavily salted water to support you, it is your one chance to feel totally weightless without escaping gravity. Add the fact that the water and surrounding air are maintained at body temperature, and that the tank is sealed to prevent light penetration, and you have an opportunity to experience something truly unique. If you are new to floating, it is recommended that you try three separate sessions before deciding whether it is for you, and that is exactly what I did. The first time in, I was happy to learn that there are soft lights

and music for several minutes, as this seemed like a gentler way to ease in to the nothingness to come. Still, when the nothingness came, I did experience some uneasiness, but it quickly passed and I settled into some sort of calm. Ironically, the brain is so programmed to process senses that I spent much of that hour focused on the one sound I couldn’t escape – my heartbeat. My second session went more smoothly – I blocked out my heartbeat and focused on the amazing sensation of weightlessness. Only in water can you truly straighten your spine and relax your neck, and it is the most physically restful state I could imagine. By the third session, the novelty had worn off – I was ready for the plunge into darkness, my mind embraced the sensory silence, the hour passed in seconds, and I came out of the float feeling like I’d had a full night’s sleep. And then I understood why people get hooked. Floating can offer relief from a wide range of conditions like stress, pain, insomnia and anxiety. It has even led some to deep creative inspiration, on par with a psychedelic experience. Whatever your ultimate outcome, I think that everyone can benefit from a sensory vacation.

W

hether you’re 16 or 66, there’s no reason to have misaligned teeth. Orthodontic treatment is no longer a matter of a mouth full of shiny metal, as dentist Julie Rafferty explained, ‘At Andrew Scott Dental, we offer removable clear plastic aligner braces and fixed tooth-coloured braces for realignment of anterior teeth. Teeth that have previously been rotated, crowded or angled, or too far apart can be corrected, sometimes in just a few months. ‘Andrew Scott Dental Care offers a free assessment and private orthodontic treatment for those aged sixteen or over. There’s no upper limit provided the teeth and gums are healthy. Some people have their

childhood treatments redone after a relapse. It’s such a boost to selfconfidence. Some clients describe it as life-changing. ‘We use computer technology to design the braces and assess the treatment requirements. We can even use intraoral scanners instead of having to take impressions, which some people find uncomfortable’. Orthodontic treatment costs between £1300 and £3500 depending on the complexity of treatment. 0% finance may be available. 15A Victoria Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1XB Tel: 01224 806700 andrewscottdental.co.uk

rows have dominated and defined facial makeup over the last few years with thicker, more natural, but groomed brows being essential to looking younger. Luckily, there’s now a great selection of products and professional services to help you get brows that flatter and frame your face. Start by having your brows shaped professionally. Threading is painless while waxing will remove even the tiniest stray hair. Even dark brows will benefit from the added definition offered by tinting. It only takes a few minutes, but can take a decade off your face. HD Brows give a very defined look which works well if you normally wear a dramatic look, or are appearing in Hollyoaks, but may overpower a make-up free face, making it look a little harsh. Try Soap Brow, an amazing product which will not only fluff up your brows but also defines your face and makes your eyes stand out too. The gel texture makes it really easy to use and it comes in a cute little tin! Leading make-up artists such as James Molloy swear by it. (£12, WestBarnCo.com) Brow Boost is a must have if you’re looking to grow out your brows. It is enriched with vitamins to help nurture

and protect the hair by transforming thin eyebrows into fluffed up lion mane brows. Better yet, it’s 100% vegan, cruelty free and hand-made. (£29, WestBarnCo.com). Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade is great because there are eleven shades to choose from, so there’s almost bound to be one that matches your brows. It’s a little pot of cream-based pomade that’s really easy to apply to give a lightly groomed and natural look. You can also build it up to create a fuller, bolder brow. (£19, cultbeauty.co.uk) Of the major brands, Benefit have long been known for their brow products, even offering a great brow bar in Debenhams in the Trinity Centre. Try their Gimme Brow fibre gel. The tinted eyebrow gel is perfect for covering up sparse spots and will help you create a more defined brow without it looking too harsh. The tiny bristles on the stick are designed to pick out even the lightest and tiniest hairs on the skin providing fuller looking eye brows and holding them in place all day and night. (£21.50, benefitcosmetics.com). Now you just need to learn to raise an eyebrow in a quizzical manner and you’re all set.

his summer sees a lot of coral in the shops. It’s a universally flattering shade, bringing warmth to pale skins and complementing darker tones. It’s one of those shades that pops up in the summer, then fades away as the nights draw in. Have a little splurge on a few pieces to update your wardrobe, but don’t make it a major investment. MENS EDIT | 41

JANUARY BRINGS THE MENSWEAR CATWALK SHOWS TO LONDON, NEW YORK, PARIS AND MILAN, BUT SOMETIMES IT’S DIFFICULT TO SEE HOW FASHION APPARENTLY DESIGNED IN THE HOPE OF GAINING COLUMN INCHES WILL TRANSLATE TO THE STYLISH SCOTTISH CHAP’S WARDROBE IN SEPTEMBER.

fter all, the number of occasions one can wear Moschino’s patent leather peaked caps or J.W Anderson’s men’s bloomers is somewhat limited in most walks of life. That said, there were plenty of ideas worth stealing... Possibly the most successful look of the season came from Dunhill and Kris Van Assche’s first show at Berluti. Both featured outfits where a single shade dominated from head to foot, with rich leathers, wool and textures to the forefront. It’s a look that’s both dramatic and refined, lengthening the silhouette and creating an appearance of luxury. Berluti used a rich, deep brown, while Dunhill set off a charcoal grey ensemble with a brown cummerbund type belt which was surprisingly effective. In either case, it’s a look that needs a lot of shopping time to pull together. Dunhill and Berluti both championed the return of the immaculately cut double breasted overcoat and jacket, paired, in Berluti’s case with motocross style leather trousers or slim trousers with ankle zips at the front. Neither option appeared convincing. Elsewhere, designers seemed to have decided that suits should be available in all colours of the rainbow. These are strong shades, rather than the ice-cream colours of the 80s and Miami Vice. The darker greens and blues might work well in a modern office, but neon yellow may not bring that hoped for promotion.

Knitwear is an autumn essential, but Pringle of Scotland seems to have rather lost their way this season, with masculine twin-sets in an Argyll check and giant logo scarves – always a sign that a designer has run out of ideas. Look instead to Loewe’s bright and bold stripes or buy local at Johnstone’s of Elgin, who have some excellent cashmere. Loewe also went big on oversized pieces, layering and padding, teamed, somewhat impractically, with shorts. There was very little denim on show, but we doubt that jeans will suddenly go out of style. Perhaps look for black or grey slim cut styles to remain on point. Hermès had perhaps the most covetable and achievable looks of the season, combining a dark blue palette with supple leather, twill and wool for a wholly masculine, yet younger take on tailoring. A sublime burgundy leather jeans jacket, geometric knitwear, slim suiting and an absolutely gorgeous leather and wool parka were all easy to wear and looked – unlike some other shows – like the designers actually understood how men want to dress. Assuming that you are somewhat disinclined to splash out the price of a small car on one jacket, look for midnight blues, browns, charcoal greys in slim cut styles with key pieces in leather or wool, offset with splashes of strong dark colours in knitwear and accessories when you hit the shops.

CHEF FOCUS | 43

Grace’s Highland Beef Cheeks (serves 4)

Our beef comes from Grace Noble at Aberdeenshire Highland Beef, so this dish is named in her honour. At Maryculter House, we serve the beef cheeks with Highland beef rump and Jacob’s ladder short rib. It comes with caramelised onion puree, shallot rings, Yorkshire pudding, fondant potatoes and wilted greens. Here’s a simplified version of the beef cheeks recipe to try at home. You’ll need to allow about five hours, so it’s one for the weekend. Six or eight cheeks will serve four people with your choice of vegetables and roast or boiled potatoes. Yorkshire puddings are a must, though!

Pre-heat the oven to 160oC. Cut each cheek up into four. Season with Maldon rock salt. Lightly oil a frying pan. Add the meat and sear completely at a moderate heat, then remove the beef. Take about 300g of a mix of carrots, leeks, garlic, white onion and celery. Leave the skins on and roughly chop. Add to the pan and cook on a high heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring continuously. Tip into a roasting tin. Take around 500ml of red wine and deglaze the pan, again at a moderate heat. Turn up the heat and to reduce down to a third of the original volume. Lightly scrape the pan, removing any liquid or leftover meat and vegetables. Add to the beef cheeks in the roasting tin. Cover with cold water, add thyme, rosemary and bay leaf. Put a lid on or cover with greaseproof paper and tinfoil. Put in the oven for 3 hours. Remove and strain off liquid and set aside. Discard the vegetables. Roll the meat into sausage shape logs, chill for 1 hour and then coat in flour, egg and then breadcrumbs. Deep fry in oil. Take the cooking liquid from the beef cheek and reduce down to 500ml, add 100 ml of full bodied red wine and allow to simmer. Once reduced, set aside. Serve the fried beef cheeks with the warm red wine sauce and your choice of vegetables.

Your Carriage awaits As you approach The Carriage in Ballater, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the fresh green and white wooden frontage of the rebuilt Ballater railway station.

words by Jan Leatham

I

nside the leather banquettes, the Royal Waiting Room, reproduction posters for the railway era and station platform all nostalgically recreate the feeling of a bygone era. The Carriage is now a café, tearoom and bistro serving everything from a barista coffee and homemade scone Wednesday to Sunday, to lovingly created plates of very accomplished food as a bistro three evenings a week. We headed there on a beautiful Thursday evening with great anticipation. The bistro evenings are held on the platform, with seating at tables and the comfy red leather banquettes, which come complete with overhead luggage racks. The menu features mouthwatering classics such as smoked salmon, fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding, but I went for the crispy squid with chorizo, rocket and tomato and my friend chose

the grilled goats cheese with shredded beetroot and chicory, orange and honey dressing. My squid was so light and crispy and paired perfectly with the salty chorizo; while my friend was very impressed with the heights to which the often maligned goats cheese had been taken to with the contrasting tastes and textures. Mains were no less impressive with a confit duck leg falling off the bone into a bed of puy lentils, black pudding and Savoy cabbage, while my friend’s Caesar salad with smoked salmon was pronounced one of best she’d ever had, and she has put years of effort into this quest! We finished off by sharing a fabulously lemony lemon posset with raspberry sorbet and toasted oats and pronounced the meal a resounding success, culminating in a beautiful drive home.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT E

at on the Green’s renowned chef owner, Craig Wilson, has been working with Food Waste Scotland to help cut food waste. Here, he shares his top tips… In Aberdeen, the shire and Moray, we dump over 46,000 tonnes of food waste in the North-east each year, adding to climate change and methane gas emissions from landfill. That’s £440 each household is literally chucking away each year. Think of what else you could spend it on! Planning your weekly menus and sticking to your shopping list can save time, money and the planet. Don’t be tempted by bigger packs as you’ll end up throwing the contents away. Use a butcher or fishmonger when you can, and buy loose fruit and veg, or smaller packs. Keep it in the fridge and it’ll last up to two weeks longer.

THE NEW NORDIC N

ew Nordic is a very considered look that takes patience to achieve, but reflects the Scandinavian aesthetic of simply living beautifully in beautifully simple interiors. Everything is about clean lines and pared back minimalism. It’s about choosing well, selecting furniture and accessories that use natural materials, great design and will never look outdated or fail to bring pleasure. There’s no room for anything extraneous, no frills, fringes or fripperies, yet it’s not austere or uncomfortable. Instead, richness comes from the beauty of wood and the rich sea-tones of aqua and blue. Think of it as mindful decorating!

It’s hard to think of autumn and winter when we are still in the throes of summer but if you want to have that extra layer of colour late into the season, it’s well worth the planning. You have enormous choice where autumn is concerned with so many trees and shrubs providing blazing red and oranges as their leaves turn but I’ve concentrated here on a mix of flower and berry interest and then added in more compact species of trees suitable for smaller gardens (3-4m high at maturity) and of course some climbers of particular winter interest. There is lots more to choose from but here are my top tips to provide a mixture of evergreen interest along with berry, flower and even scent!

C

ompanies up and down the country are well-versed in the art of the charity 10K run or Tough Mudder challenge. A popular and effective way to raise money, these events are also seen as key team building exercises. But what do you do when your teams work nearly 300 miles apart...?

Earlier this year, the ROSEN Group, a leading provider of cutting-edge integrity solutions, applied its problem-solving skills to this conundrum. The result? A longdistance charity bike ride, which saw participants from the company’s Aberdeen and Newcastle offices cycling from one to the other over one weekend. In aid of local charity, Charlie House, ten ROSEN colleagues (accompanied by their dedicated support team) donned their cycling gear and headed north from Newcastle via Alnwick, Kelso, Edinburgh and Braemar before arriving in Aberdeen on 1 July. Intrepid team member and ROSEN Aberdeen’s Technical Manager Bryn Roberts commented, ‘Whilst active

in the city for many years, ROSEN’s dedicated Aberdeen office opened in 2018. We are in constant contact with our colleagues in Newcastle and beyond, but rail travel is our usual mode of transport! ‘This challenge has allowed us to connect with colleagues on a different level; one which will have a profound impact upon our daily business relationships whilst raising funds.’ Kirsty Walker, Charlie House fundraising co-ordinator, says, ‘It is wonderful to see such thought go into a corporate team fundraising idea, which ties in two offices at opposite ends of the country. The cycle challenge for both offices is an example of great team-work, collaboration and determination. ‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank the ROSEN team for their support and commend them on this physically gruelling challenge. The money raised from this will go on to support babies, children and young people with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions, and their families, in North-east Scotland.’

reaches of Schiehallion, though a visit to Eradour or Blair Atholl Distillery or the clothing department and the excellent food hall at The House of Bruar may prove more immediately rewarding. Summer visitors should check out the programme at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Don’t miss the Highland Chocolatier at Grandtully on the route to Aberfeldy.

Lunch means Pitlochry. The area abounds in blood-soaked history, with Blair Atholl Castle, the Pass of Killiecrankie and the barren expanse of Rannoch Moor. The energetic might fancy a stroll up the lower

Aberfeldy is worth a stop, as it offers and abundance of delightful little galleries and craft shops. Artisanand on Bank Street always has some interesting pieces and The Watermill is charming.

Head for Perth for the day. Scone Palace often has interesting events and Branklyn Gardens is great for keen gardeners or those in search of some contemplative space. If you need to stretch your legs, or walk off all the treats you bought in Crieff, then Kinnoul Hill offers a rewarding panorama at the top. The racecourse can be fun while there’s a good selection of specialist shops if you could use some retail therapy. The Fergusson Gallery, Frames and the Jardine Gallery are all worth a visit, while the Glenalmond Tweed Company has a great range of goods made from Harris Tweed. A visit to the Black Watch Castle and Museum at Balhousie Castle is a must. The castle brings this colourful Highland regiment’s history to life, through artefacts, personal stories and interactive displays. There’s a gift shop and the café does light lunches and a tasty afternoon tea. The grounds are worth a wander too. Time for dinner before the drive home. Pick up some planting ideas

f you’re a keen gardener or just looking for ideas for your own space, why not visit some of the North-east’s best private gardens over the summer? Scotland’s Gardens Scheme sees around a dozen of city and shire’s most beautiful gardens, as well as similar numbers in Angus and Dundee and Moray open for charity over the summer months. You could choose a few and make a day of it. The Scotland’s Garden’s Scheme supports over 250 different charities. 60% of the visitors’ entry fees goes to a charity of the owner’s choice while the remaining 40% is distributed to three charities. The 2019 beneficiaries are Maggie’s Cancer Centres, The Queen’s Nursing Institute of Scotland and Perennial - a small specialist charity which helps anyone who professionally makes or looks after gardens, sports grounds, woodlands and other green spaces, in times of crisis or difficulty.

Some gardens open on selected weekends, when the garden is at its best. There are often teas and refreshments on offer, particularly in the larger private gardens. Some gardens also sell plants in aid of their chosen charities, so you could come home with a lot more than just some new ideas.. It’s fascinating to have a poke around other people’s gardens, and a constant source of inspiration. Some gardens are only open by appointment, but you will be made very welcome. It’s a great chance to see what plants work well together and to pick up some expert advice and insider tips from the owners. It’s a good idea to take a notepad or use your phone to take pictures of plants you like and note down those pesky Latin names. You’ll find full listings on the scheme’s website at Scotlandsgardens.org, but here are a few of our favourites…

KIDS | 85

KID’S PARTIES USED TO BE STRAIGHTFORWARD AFFAIRS WITH SILLY GAMES, ICE-CREAM AND JELLY AND ENOUGH CAKE TO MAKE SEVERAL CHILDREN SICK.

N

ow, parents can be overly competitive, children sometimes have unrealistic expectations and parents are often left unsure about who – if anyone – will show up because so few people bother to RSVP. Parties for small children are often more about the parents, as we have few memories before the age of five. If your kid can’t even talk yet, they really don’t need a visit from a real live unicorn and a balloon modeller. Keep it simple with messy activities, singing and dancing and lots of finger food. Consider hiring a local hall or room at a community centre if you’re worried someone may scribble on your Picasso. It’s cheap and there’s plenty of room to run round. Some can provide catering if there’s a café on site. Soft play centres offer a variety of party packages and these always work well for children up till the age of six or so. Themed dress-up parties work well, whether it's Disney princesses or pirates, especially if you theme games and activities to match. Hiring a bouncy castle is another sure-fire winner, especially if it comes with music and adults can have a shot too. Keep in mind that many children may be prevented from attending if parents perceive that the event is expensive, so don’t ask for expensive gifts or

plan something hugely extravagant. Your child just wants to have a good time with their friends, not make people feel awkward. Keep it simple and low key. There are plenty of entertaining and inexpensive ideas for activities and games on the internet. If a DIY approach seems overly time consuming, or you’re not a fountain of cheap and cheerful games and creative ideas, then you can always outsource the project to one of the many local businesses that cater for various themed parties. Jump In Trampoline Park at Altens offer a brilliant time complete with food, while girls from 8-13 might fancy a pamper party at a local salon. Several offer this service. Aberdeen Snowsports are a good option for active kids. Artificial slope skiing and snowboarding are popular and lessons can be arranged. Tubing is great fun and inexpensive at £6 per person for an hour. Similarly, Transitions Extreme’s climbing wall, bike high ropes, and skateboard park make for an action-packed birthday party with 90 minutes of tuition costing £90 for six children and party food being available at extra cost. Go Ape at Crathes Castle offers the chance to whizz through the trees on zip wires, while smaller siblings will enjoy the wooden adventure playground. Sleepovers are great for children aged 8-12 or so, particularly if you order pizza and make a blanket fort. If the weather allows, try a garden campfire with sausages cooked on sticks, toasted marshmallows and spooky stories. Younger teenaged boys, in particular, may enjoy a supervised overnight camping trip, complete with popup tents and challenges such as making bridges, white water rafting or a survival skills session. It’s probably too much to expect them to forage for dinner, so a food run to the nearest take away will stave off the possibility of a Lord of the Flies scenario developing. Teenagers may prefer activities for a smaller group, such as a trip to the cinema and dinner with their friends, without adults present except as taxi drivers. Above all, remember that is about everybody having a good time and that needn’t cost a fortune.

It is often said that jazz is dead. But for those who truly understand the genre, that statement is an oxymoron. Born in the early 1920’s with the popularity of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, jazz is arguably the most vibrant musical genre out there.

The mistake some people make is to assume that jazz is a steadfast genre, with unwavering rules and prescribed rhythms. In reality, jazz is as much about improvisation and impromptu instrument solos as it is about trying to sound like any version that came before it. In fact, if you hear a song performed live ten different times, you are sure to hear ten different versions. Which means this is not a genre for the faint-hearted, and it is reassuring when young musicians choose to follow its path.

Hamlet is an Aberdeen-based jazz band made up of five such musicians. Matthew Kilner, Gavin Hunter, Neil Kendal, Finley Campbell and Richard Glassby first came together in 2017 through Aberdeen University’s Jazz Society. Eventually, they started writing and performing their own original music and decided to name themselves after the hometown of John Coltrane, the great American saxophonist.

When asked about their influences, Neil explained, ‘We have a wide variety of influences, varying from Scottish Traditional music to Afrobeat to Jazz Fusion. Our biggest influences have to be the growing Scottish and London Jazz scenes – bands like Ezra Collective, Sons of Kemet and Fat Suit.’ About their own music, he added, ‘It’s a fusion of all of our influences, but we try to write tunes which are high in energy and fun to play.’ Hamlet’s first release, Act One, is indeed full of energy and fun, and holds true to the notion that jazz is an individual journey that is constantly being re-invented. From the punchy horns of the song Twenty3 to the sultry vocals of Sunset Sunside to the pacey rap that overlies Switch States, Hamlet deftly demonstrate that the umbrella of jazz is very wide indeed. Once you understand the nature of jazz music, you realise that it is anything but dead – in fact, undertones can be heard in much of the music we listen to every day. And thanks to young bands like Hamlet, that is set to continue.

THE LAST WORD | 95

W

hen you see on the front cover of a 350-page book chronicling the colourful life of Aberdeen’s champion rally driver David Gillanders, the words ‘I do all the talking’, you fear you may have come up against a real motormouth. Not so. What emerged from my chat with this 69 year-old action man at his second home, the Malmaison Hotel in the city’s Queen’s Road, was a touching story of a man racing against time to ensure that Gladys, his much-loved wife of 46 years, their children, Nicole and David, and grandchildren, Finlay and Amelie, have a record of his sometimes exotic journey along the highways and byways of life. ‘I have not done this book for selfglorification,’ he said. ‘No, what has driven me has been serious concerns about my health going back to early in 2006 when I had to have a triple coronary artery bypass in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Since then, I have had heart attacks in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and had six stents fitted. Compiling this memoir has taken more than three years and I am so relieved it is done.’ Great tracts of the book are taken up with stories and pictures of David’s rise to fame, as one of the UK’s top rally drivers and, later, as the organiser over several years from 1995

of offroad ventures with Land Rover at Skibo Castle, in conjunction with its owner from 1982, Peter de Savary. However, what is remarkable about David’s swashbuckling career in motor sport is that he was born with a disabled left hand. ‘It was suggested by the medics in Aberdeen to my parents, David and Doris, that it was perhaps best to amputate the hand,’ he said, ‘but they would have none of it. Instead, they chose to drive me to London to see a specialist in Harley Street. Remember, this is 1950 and that epic journey of more than 1,000 miles there and back was accomplished in a three-wheeler Morgan sports car. ‘I had one finger amputated but whatever else the London surgeon did, for which I never cease to be thankful, I had a functioning left hand. I will always be grateful to my parents for sticking to their guns in doing what they did on my behalf.’ David’s time with de Savary also included an invitation from him to take part in amazing trip to a regatta at the luxury resort of Newport, Rhode Island. ‘I had never enjoyed the experience of racing a yacht,’ said David, ‘but it did not take me long to say yes, please.’ Once across the pond in the US, his obvious driving skills were put to good use and he became the driver of the team bus to the yacht club. However, he had to park it some

way away and by the time he got to the club, his teammates were nowhere to be seen. There was nothing for it but to go for breakfast. Behind him in the queue was a lady who had forgotten to pick up a tray for her food so the chivalrous David told her to put her breakfast on his tray and they would dine together. He had no idea who he was with until a plague of paparazzi began snapping at the dashing Scotsman in his Carnegie tartan outfit and the mystery lady. Alas, it soon transpired she was the object of all the interest and no wonder. She was the Hollywood superstar Jane Fonda, whose husband, media mogul Ted Turner, was skipper of the yacht racing against that of Peter de Savary. Another readable chapter of David’s book is an account of his epic trip in 2013 with his good pal Gordon Hutcheon in what was called the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Challenge. It’s hard to believe but they somehow succeeded in completing the drive from Aberdeen and back in a 17-year-old Nissan Micra. David is determined to keep going flat out with his life and surprise, surprise, he ends the book, available on eBay, by saying he will still do all the talking. Enough said!
