EDITOR L
ike most people, we tend to withdraw a little in the period between New Year and the first warm days of spring. It’s tempting to cosy up and stay in, but if you do, you’ll be missing out on so much. Whether it’s the upcoming Nuart festival of street art which will see some of the city centre transformed from grey concrete to colourful talking points, arranging a free tour of the rather wonderful new Treasure Hub, or even heading out to enjoy an ice cream sundae, there’s always something interesting to do. Grab some gloves, pull on your puffa jacket and get out and enjoy your life!

Kids’ Fitness
AT DAVID LLOYD ABERDEEN
P
rising your little angels away from the Xbox or their phones is never easy, but it’s not just thumbs that need a bit of exercise. Luckily, David Lloyd Aberdeen offers a great programme of fitness activities designed for toddlers to teens. They’ve recently added nine new Les Mills ‘Born To Move’ classes, running across daytimes, evenings and weekends. Each class is designed for a specific age range, so that the music and movement exercises are tailored to suit. Children build skills, grow in confidence and have fun with new friends their own age. Better still, they’ll be building positive attitudes to physical exercise that will last a lifetime.

David Lloyd Aberdeen have four qualified Les Mills ‘Born to Move’ instructors. The class for 2-3 year olds encourages parents or guardians to interact with their child through movement and encouraging interaction with other children. The 3-5 year old class lets the children experience the session without parental supervision and uses simple movements to explore how bodies work,
developing self-awareness, balance and concentration as they interpret music and explore movement. Fundamental movement skills are introduced in the 6-8 year old classes with kids helping to choose the music for their programme, with a greater emphasis on visual instruction through simple choreography. Finally, the 8-12 year old classes introduce movements that the children will go on to use if they attend classes as adults later in life - kicks, punches, jumps, dance moves and relaxation techniques, alongside interactive games to harness teamwork skills. Why not drop the kids off and spend some time in the gym, taking one of David Lloyd Aberdeen’s many adult fitness classes or just opting for a relaxed time-out over some coffee or a snack in the café?

Do varicose veins stop you enjoying the summer?

A
s one of our patients says, ‘I am overjoyed with the results. All the unsightly veins have gone and I no longer feel self-conscious wearing shorts. The treatment is pain-free, and you are able to choose appointment times to suit yourself rather than being told when to attend, I would recommend the Aberdeen Clinic to anyone who has vein problems.’ As summer is coming it’s not uncommon for the third of us who have varicose veins or thread veins to feel self-conscious about wearing shorts or swimming costumes. In others there can be a constant tiredness or discomfort in the legs after standing for any length of time. Just a few years ago your options for varicose vein treatment were surgery and/or support stockings but now most patients are treated on a walk-in-walkout basis. Mr. Stuart Suttie, one of the four consultant vascular surgeons at the Aberdeen Clinic says, ‘Varicose veins are amongst the most common reasons patients come to see me as a vascular surgeon, but it is seldom that I need to
use an operation to treat them. Instead, we are able to treat varicose veins with minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound guided injection of foam. These techniques have revolutionised the recovery from varicose vein treatment.’ It’s important to ensure that each patient gets the right treatment for their varicose veins and the multi-disciplinary team at our specialist vein clinic are expert at helping patients to select the optimal treatment for them. As a result varicose vein problems can be a thing of the past after a simple out-patient procedure.

Valentine’s Day means it’s time to pucker up. Here’s our pick of the best new lip balms and colour for that perfect pout…
BEAUTY | 23
T
his Spring, there are two major, and majorly contradictory, trends in lipwear. The first is a dramatic, heavily layered, hi-gloss look, sometimes with a metallic or glitter accent, that should be reserved for nights out or early 1980s album covers. The other is, thankfully, rather easier to pull off for day to day wear. Catwalks abounded with a softly worn in, slightly smudged look in naturally pink or peachy shades or lightly applied reds with minimal makeup elsewhere.
© Shutterstock/ValuaVitaly
Try Dior Addict’s Lip Glow in Natural Pink at £25 or Perricone MD’s excellent No Lipstick Lipstick, which layers to give a natural rosy hue. The neuropeptides, jojoba oil and mango butter are great for keeping lips soft while the mineral SPF15 adds extra protection. Add a dab of Perricone MD’s anti-ageing lipgloss for a fuller look. For a more purse-friendly approach, Boots stock Sleek MakeUp, also available at sleekmakeup.com, which offers 26 shades in their LIP VIP range, each priced at £5.50. Private Booth and Backstage are both natural pinks, while Fancy Pants is an appealing peachy shade. Walk of Fame is a dark red which works with most complexions, while Hype is a medium lilac which tones well with this season’s ultra violet fashion shades, if you can pull it off. Even a lip balm can help you achieve a more finished look in a couple of seconds. Hempz is great for vegans and vegetarians as the hemp seed oil is gently moisturising and softening, providing hydration, nourishment and conditioning to lips. The tube is great for handbags and the sweet citrus flavour is really nice.
© Shutterstock/AlexAnnaButs
If your lips are in need of intensive care, try O’Keefe’s. They’re known for their industrial strength hand repair products, but they also do a couple of amazing lip balms that will soon lick cracked or chapped lips into shape. These work equally well for men as they’re not tinted or infused with a femininely fruity flavour. Time to pucker up! Mwah!

ashion, it seems, has tired of austerity and luxe minimalism and has gone a little crazy. Catwalks blossomed with fringing, sequins, bows, embroidery, feathers and encrustations of crystal in almost every conceivable combination. Louis Vuitton showed immaculately cut Regency frock coats with silver embroidery and Thom Brown went with gloriously impractical candy floss clouds of white feathered cuffs. Stella McCartney and Valentino both added ruffles to asymmetric necklines, while Moschino showed feathered tutus. Moncler Gamme Rouge channelled a
symphony of silver, while Chanel opted for pleated and embellished tulle. Skirts were wider, and everything is about confidence, drama and flounce. It’s not a season for fading into the background. Naturally, high street versions are less extravagant, so it’s worth shopping around to avoid pieces that follow the trend but look tawdry. Think high end Las Vegas rather than out of season Blackpool. Above all, avoid anything that makes you look like you’ve inexplicably fallen into a dressing up box filled with glitter and chickens!

he sale racks have finally disappeared. The last of the amusing Christmas jumpers and superhero loungewear has been packed away till next year, so now’s the time to think about shedding some layers and swapping that fleece for something a bit more stylish. Gentlemen, let’s go shopping! Spring’s catwalks brought a less structured look to suiting and jackets with both Berluti and Zegna showing a softer, almost floaty approach to formality, with shades ranging from clotted cream through peaches and sun-baked terracotta. It’s a difficult look to pull off in Fyvie, but take the high street approach with a lightweight suit-cut jacket over a t-shirt and you’ll look effortlessly on trend. There’s also a nostalgic tinge to Spring/Summer 2018, with many designers updating 1950s staples, with garish Hawaiian shirts, bowling shirts and sportswear-inspired styling.

2017 busy year for tourism in Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire Last year several ‘firsts’ were celebrated in Aberdeen, with all-new sporting events and major infrastructure developments underway, including the creation of a new £300 million+ AECC and the redevelopment of both Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Music Hall. Aberdeen International Airport opened their new Northern Lights Lounge and international arrivals area in October, and November saw the launch of the North East 250 and the new Snow Roads touring route. Ballater welcomed the Scottish 6 Days Orienteering Championships in July, and in August, Aboyne celebrated its 150th Highland Games on the town’s Green, with a surprise visit from HRH the Queen.

The team has signed up a wide range of new clients from owner-managed and private equity backed companies to major global corporates, and contracts in excess of £4m have been secured over the last couple of months.

hen Grant’s not cooking up a storm in the kitchen, you’ll find him in a canoe, halfway up a mountain or on his motorbike…
I grew up in Glasgow, but live in Inverurie now. My grandfather and uncle were both chefs in London, so I think that’s where my love of cooking comes from. It makes me happy to cook for others and make them smile and I’ve always liked looking for new ways to get a good result. I enjoy working at Village Urban, because the brand concept allows us to rip up the rule book then come up with a great dish at an affordable price. I’d say our food is simple but imaginative, adventurous and slightly daring. The kitchen is changing all the time. I love the food and the team I work with. The pace of things can be the best or worse thing, it can be pressured but we’re always looking to put out the best food. If I could have anyone to dinner, I’d invite Marc Marquez, the Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and four-time MotoGP world champion, and Casey Stoner, the two-time MotoGP World Champion, who’s currently the test and development rider for Ducati. No surprises what we’d talk about! When it comes to the menu, I’m happy to try anything, but I’d probably serve a huge beef stew, with roast potatoes and vegetables.

February might not seem the obvious time to go out and try some of the city’s best ice-cream shops and parlours, but we’re nothing if not dedicated at Trend…

e started our frozen adventure at Equi’s on Rosehill Drive. Equi’s has a lot of history and an Italian heritage. The Hamilton - based company uses the gelato recipe developed by Pietro Equi, 104 years ago. The family still runs the business, though Pietro would probably be startled by the amazing range of flavours now on offer. Equi’s Aberdeen is open from 12-9.30 Monday to Thursday and till 10pm on Friday to Sunday, so it’s perfect for an afternoon treat or evening indulgence. There are no tables, but there’s plenty of parking, so it’s easy to take a treat home. The shop is managed by the ever-friendly Fozia and owned by her uncle Tahir. Equi’s offers over 30 flavours ranging from Bubblegum and Cookie Monster to more grown up flavours like Café
Macchiato. We particularly liked the Mango Tango, the Scottish Raspberry Sorbet and the Scottish Tablet. If that’s not sweet enough, you’ll also find a range of hand-made ice cream cakes and an entire wall of confectionery. Next up, we headed for Crolla’s on Rosemount Place, never the easiest area to park. It’s a retro-styled mix of chrome and red vinyl that conjures up an echo of US diners. Crolla’s have been making ice-cream for generations and parlour owner Carol’s parents used to have an ice-cream van. These days, they’re often found helping out behind the counter. Carol’s mum keeps the place sparkling while her dad makes the ice cream behind the circular viewing window. The smooth but sharp lemon sorbet was probably the best we’ve ever tasted and the strawberry was a revelation, worlds apart from the normal artificial versions. The mint choc chip was really fresh and we loved the coldstone waffle and sundae creations (mixed up on a marble slate in front of our very eyes!). Ooh! and

If you’re not in the mood for ice-cream, there are also some tasty home-made soups, sandwiches and baked potatoes, so it’s great for lunch or catching up with friends. If you live relatively near, you can also get your favourites delivered via JustEat or Deliveroo. If you’re more than 4.5 miles away, consider moving!
We tried their waffle and crepe creations, which come with your choice of ice cream, sauces and toppings. The orange ice cream was magnificent, the waffle managed to be chewily crisp on the outside and fluffy inside and the dark chocolate sauce, well, we could have taken home a bucketful. Kids would love the DIY ice cream lollies which you can dip and finish with your choice of toppings, or you can build your own sundae. They even offer an unusual buttery and jam flavour ice cream.
Our last stop was Mackie’s 19.2, which is in the new Marischal Square complex. It’s been open since early December and is proving very popular, even though the rest of the premises isn’t yet occupied. There are lots of options for snacks and lunches, alongside some delicious cakes and tray bakes made by Hoodles. The ice cream, which included some unique flavours, is

Towards the end of last year, The Kitchen Works on Summer Street had a bit of a makeover and has been renamed Seven.
A
ll the things we most loved have been retained - the friendly atmosphere and well thought out food that draws on the best in local produce. Owner George Stewart previously owned both Café Society and The Soda Fountain, so he knows a bit about great customer service too. Seven is open on Tuesday to Thursday from 9.30am to 3.30pm and from 9.30am to midnight on Friday and Saturday. You can get off to a good start with breakfast, featuring croissants, porridge or filled rolls. Many of the ingredients are local, chosen with care from artisan suppliers. It shows. Tuck into delicious scones, tray-bakes and home-brewed coffee from beans
supplied by Britain’s premier roasters, Square Mile Coffee. It’s a great spot for a catch up or out of the office meeting. You can even hire out the modern rustic upstairs area if you’re planning a bigger meeting, birthday party or event. Lunchtime brings a selection of the freshest home-made soups, salads, lunch platters, daily specials and
sandwiches filled with continental delicacies, or local favourites like Lairig Ghru cheddar and farmhouse pickle. Afternoon brings a relaxed pace, dawdling over afternoon tea, complete with a glass of prosecco, or a boutique gin and a bit of a gossip. Children are welcome, with their own menu. On Fridays and Saturdays, the evening menu features Seven’s favourites, tasty small plates and delicious sweets. Opt for a gin flight, charcuterie and cheese platter or a craft beer at the bar. Seven’s appeal stems from its welcoming embrace. It’s like slipping on an oversized thick cashmere jumper - instantly comforting, familiar and cosy. Seven could be your new favourite number. 7 Summer Street, AB10 1SB Tel: 01224 632237 sevenaberdeen.co.uk

PRING IS ON ITS WAY, AND AS THE TEMPERATURES INCREASE AND THE DAYS LENGTHEN THERE IS MUCH TO BE DONE IN THE GARDEN.
Start by removing seed heads and stems that were left over for decorative purposes or as winter habitat. Clear the last of the leaves and give the lawn a good rake to get rid of the detritus that has gathered over the winter months. Now it’s time for spring pruning. Not everyone feels confident about this so here’s a brief guide covering the pruning of shrubs and plants. Pruning trees is a more complex subject and because of this and the heights involved, I would suggest seeking the advice of a well recommended arborist (tree surgeon) to help you tackle this. LET’S START WITH WHEN NOT TO PRUNE SHRUBS AND PLANTS: Not when the soil is sodden after rain; standing on the surrounding soil in these conditions will result in compacting it and therefore preventing moisture from penetrating the roots, and not when there is frost on the ground or forecast of icy winds. SO WHEN SHOULD YOU PRUNE? At a time that has allowed the maximum period for the development and ripening of new growth before winter. Flowering plants that carry their flowers on wood formed in the previous year should be pruned as soon as the flowers have faded.
Flowering plants that carry their flowers on wood formed in the current year, from early spring onwards and have the months until flowering begins in which to ripen their growth, can be pruned at the end of the winter, unless there are severe frosts forecast. For how to prune I would suggest a book called The Pruner’s Handbook, this contains practical advice with good diagrams on how to prune almost everything! It’s by John Malins and the ISBN is 0 7153 0399 6, but a good starting point for pruning any plant is to remove dead, diseased or damaged stems. So now you have all the plants, shrubs and trees tidied up and looking good, it’s time to plan what to plant this year. The colour palette for 2018 features colours naturally found in lush vegetation and woodland such as berry-infused purple, red wood, eggshell blue and green foliage. Accent colours can be introduced through clay pots with purple flowering herbs such as lavender, rosemary and Thai basil, or how about sanding down some wooden occasional tables or chairs, and splashing on a coat of eggshell blue paint to compliment the shades of your new plants? However you apply colour the key is to make it sit naturally within the space rather than trying to force it, so if it works easily do it but if you are struggling with it or it is struggling with you, just let it be; the plants will do it for you all by themselves!

ReAnalogue come to Spin We’re not too sure how to describe Re-Analogue, other than to say it’s a new creative mishmash of performance, art, poetry, anything and everything that will take place every now and again! It’s aimed at students with the goal of “injecting a wee bit of incandescence into the Aberdonian proceedings”. Who can resist a bit of incandescence? The first Re-Analogue night takes place at Spin on Littlejohn Street on February 27th. Tickets are £3 and you can find out a bit more here, facebook.com/Re-Analogue

Why not stay at home? Scotland has been voted the most beautiful country in the world, according to The Rough Guide.
D
espite this, few of us have really explored our own country, often preferring to head to the sun rather than discover the delights of our own back yard. It’s a shame, because we have incredible scenery, superb food, no luggage restrictions and, unless you’re heading for the less salubrious parts of Glasgow, you already know the language! Whether it’s island hopping in the Hebrides, exploring the wilds of the Highlands, bagging a mountain or two, swimming in an crystal clear sea loch or meandering peacefully through the ruined abbeys and peel towers of the Borders, there’s a staycation for everyone. There’s a whole raft of fascinating accommodation choices from the grandest castle and luxury lodges to tiny cottages, railway carriages and shepherd’s huts, that’ll bring you back in to nature while living in luxury.

The National Trust for Scotland offer holidays in some unique properties. For a romantic break, you could cosy up in Beaton’s Croft, a wifi-free restored thatched blackhouse on Skye, where you can climb in the Cuillins, potter round the galleries and craft shops of Portree, or enjoy the food at the amazing Three Chimneys restaurant. Take the family to the child friendly lighthouse keepers’ cottages at Covesea Lighthouse near Lossiemouth, or holiday in style in The Laird’s Wing at Brodie Castle. Go to nts.org.uk/ Holidays/Find-Accommodation for the full listing. NTS Scotland also offer a range of working holidays, helping on archaeological excavations, clearing undergrowth, helping on nature and conservation projects, dry-stane dyking or laying paths. Make your choice at nts.org.uk/ ThistleCamps

One Off Places (oneoffplaces.co.uk) also have a great selection of unusual properties, if you’re looking for a memorable break. How about a hand-built wooden Romany-style caravan for two, complete with eco
wood-fired hot tubs, set in a landscaped meadow in the Scottish Borders? Or a treehouse near St. Andrews? Fernie Castle treehouse is like your own hotel suite in the forest. If it’s history that appeals, or you have a spiritual bent, head to the converted abbey at Fort Augustus on the shores of Loch Ness. The abbey now includes an indoor swimming pool and spa, a clubroom with snooker and free wifi, and a restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious meal while you enjoy spectacular views of the loch. More fun than being a monk!

Maybe you need something for the whole family, or want to get away with friends? In that case, A-listed Aikwood Tower, dating back to the 1540s, has considerable medieval charm. There are five double bedrooms and plenty of things to explore in the Ettrick Valley and beyond.

If a castle isn’t for you, how about camping? It’s a fun option for the adventurous family, while those with a Bear Grylls obsession can go off-grid with wild camping in the wilderness. Sleeping under the stars may sound primitively romantic, but keep in mind this means
sharing your space with the local insect life, eating lukewarm baked beans and wiping your bottom with the nearest dock leaf, so any romance will fade pretty quickly! If it seems a little basic, ease yourself in with a couple of nights at Greenhillock Glamping (greenglamping. co.uk) located in a five-acre flower meadow in Angus. It’s an ideal base for a visit to Lunan Bay or the Angus Glens without sacrificing too many home comforts. You can cook over a campfire, immerse yourself in nature and it’s family friendly, with plenty to do if it rains. Make this the year you holiday at home!

ABERDEEN’S CELEBRATION OF STREET ART
L THIS APRIL WILL SEE THE SECOND NUART ABERDEEN FESTIVAL BRING A FRESH BATCH OF STREET ART TO THE CITY.
ast year’s inaugural event was hugely popular, with walls all over the city centre becoming the canvas for creative work by some of the leading street art practitioners from around the world. This year’s festival runs from April 12-15, with sites across the city. Aberdeen Inspired’s Ross Grant shares what’s in store this year... Nuart started in Stavanger in 2001, showcasing the most current topics, issues and phenomena within the street art world. Nuart Aberdeen was launched last year, and is the only other Nuart Festival in the world! Aberdeen was chosen because it’s a comparatively blank canvas for street and graffiti art. There were risks associated with bringing it to the city, not least we needed to consider how people would react to such a transformative festival as Nuart. Fortunately, the festival’s key partners, Aberdeen Inspired and Aberdeen City Council, agreed that what was being offered was worth the risk.
‘Nuart Aberdeen was wildly popular, winning the hearts and minds of the people of Aberdeen, the shire and beyond, as well as bringing international media attention and global acclaim to the city. It’s a festival for everybody; unlike traditional galleries, where some people don’t feel they belong, there’s no sense of exclusivity or barrier to enjoyment. ‘This year we expect to be featuring internationally celebrated street artists from the UK, Europe and beyond. There’s also a programme of free, bookable, guided walking tours, launch day events, film screenings, engaging workshops for all ages, and our excellent Nuart Aberdeen conference which will include a programme of panel discussions and talks from some of the visiting artists. ‘Many people will be wondering just what we can do to top what was produced last year, but we are working to ensure that this year’s offering is just as transformative and exciting. ‘Nuart Aberdeen really showed the effect that having good quality public art can have in helping people feel a real sense of pride in their city. The art meant more than simply something nice to experience when local people make their way to their work or head to the shops, it showed Aberdeen as a confident and culturally vibrant place to live

and to visit. The Nuart team are highly respected for bringing together groups of artists who have a lot to say through their productions, and it’s incredibly important that their work does ‘say something’ and that they convey powerful messages. The pieces produced by the visiting artists are their ‘gift’ to the city which is a very humbling experience, they work incredibly hard, supported by resident artists, to make their ‘gift’ the best it possibly can be. Based on the almost universally positive reaction in 2017 from city centre businesses and Aberdonians alike, the audience really did seem open to the wide range of art that was produced. Whether or not they personally liked
every single piece of art, there was a real appreciation that each piece of art has a meaning and a purpose in the city. ‘I would encourage anyone who is interested in Nuart to visit our website for the latest information on what’s on and how to get involved. Come and see for yourselves, take part in some of the events, take the time to explore and enjoy this year’s festival. There really has not been a festival quite like it in our city. Nuart Aberdeen creates art for everyone to enjoy every day. If you loved Nuart Aberdeen last year, you haven't seen anything yet!’ nuartaberdeen.co.uk

A
dd in the odd disruptive influence in classes and it’s easy to see why many parents choose to use a tutor or additional education service to increase the chances of exam success, instil a love of learning and lay a path to a wider range of opportunities. A major study from the Bank of England suggests that up to half of the UK’s jobs could be lost to robots. Sectors such as catering and leisure are projected to lose a massive 77% of jobs to automation, while 73% of sales and customer service jobs will also be done by robots. Competition for jobs which involve creativity, problem solving and high level specialist knowledge, such as lawyers, doctors and engineers will increase, making it harder for this generation to reach their goals without a little extra help. That’s where boosting your child’s chances by using a tutor or an education service could pay off, increasing confidence, focus and attainment. There are a variety of businesses online offering tutoring in everything from Arabic to Russian, by way of maths, history, primary subjects, philosophy, religious education, music and singing. Most tutors are current university students, retired teachers or professionals, or teachers that have turned to tutoring. It’s worth asking for recommendations from other parents, but broadly speaking you should look for a tutor who is familiar with the syllabus, has good qualifications, boundless enthusiasm, clear communication and a way of encouraging your child to become inspired by subjects they previously struggled with. A good tutor offers a balance of rapport combined with the ability to command respect and hard work from their pupils.
If you’re looking for a tutor who can boost exam performance, several tutoring companies offer intensive revision sessions in the holidays before exams. Most tutors prefer to work with students for at least four months ahead of exams. Whether you use an agency or find a tutor by word of mouth, then it’s imperative that you choose a tutor who has been through disclosure checks with Disclosure Scotland and holds a PVG accreditation. Expect to pay around £18-£45 an hour, with most sessions lasting 90 minutes. Most agencies invoice monthly in arrears. There are also options available for primary pupils, offering help with reading, maths and science subjects, such as Kumon or Kip McGrath. Kumon offer support in maths and English in over 600 centres throughout the UK. The Aberdeen Kumon Centre is located in St. Mary’s Cathedral on Huntly Street and takes children from 4 upwards. Each child is encouraged to become a confident, independent learner through individualised study. Registration is £30, with a monthly fee of £61 per subject. Children are expected to attend once or twice a week and to complete five other sets of work at home as well. Kip McGrath have 200 centres in the UK, including Aberdeen, Peterhead and Stonehaven, and use qualified teachers to help build confidence, enthusiasm and skills in both primary and secondary English and maths. As well as weekly small-group classroom sessions, students use an online service to accelerate learning, based on an individual learning plan. If your child could use a hand to get ahead, consider a tutor. It could be the best investment you ever make on your child’s behalf.

IF YOU THINK OF MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES AS STUFFY, SNOBBY, DUSTY OR BORING, THEN BOOKING A TOUR OF THE ABERDEEN TREASURE HUB WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND.
T
he Treasure Hub, on Granitehill Road, is the new repository for all the art and artefacts the city owns. It’s a combination of a purpose built, high tech store, an accessible visitor attraction and a giant car boot sale! Sadly, you can’t take the objects home, but the joy is that you never know just what a visit may turn up, from a priceless masterpiece, to a floppy disc, a giant sign from the Brent Delta or the most exquisite, yet horrific, tiny embroidered Chinese shoes from the days of foot binding. The whole world is here and waiting to be explored. Given that the city’s museums and art gallery hold roughly half a million items and can only show 1-5% of them at any given time, it has to be stored somewhere. Previously it languished, swathed in tissue paper, in the dusty basements and forgotten corners of the Art Gallery or in dank museum stores. Now, after a massive and ongoing programme of cleaning, conservation and cataloguing, it’s possible to see and explore all this for yourself. Some of the items are boxed, but many are displayed on
open shelving. You could potter around for weeks without ever being bored. It’s no wonder that the curators are always changing their minds about their favourite objects from week to week. If you’re on a guided tour, you can look at and often handle some of the collection. The good thing is that there’s just so much stuff you’ll definitely find something to interest and excite you. From the humblest plate from the 1970s, to elaborate pieces of Venetian glass, remnants of Aberdeen’s comb making industry, or archived vintage fashion. There’s a collection of Bill Gibb designs and a frankly hideous 1980s suit that looks like Lacroix and Versace had a bet that they could make something outré for under a fiver. What’s interesting is the way the objects, many quite ordinary in themselves, spark fascinating discussions and memories. Even the automated shelving stacks are cool. In the art store, the pictures are arranged by size, on massive mesh gliding walls, so there’s a mix of

the most wonderful discovery
styles, genres and subjects on each one. It makes it easy to decide what you like, though working out why can be much more difficult! It will take another year or two to fully unpack the collections, so the Treasure Hub is changing all the time. There’s always something new to look at or a fascinating new juxtaposition of objects that sparks ideas or creativity. The curators are really fun, friendly and knowledgeable, with a true enthusiasm for sharing the city’s collection. They also work with schools, dementia organisations and other groups in the activity area following up special interests. If you’d like to get more involved, there are volunteer opportunities available too. As well as regular bookable tours on Wednesdays at 11 and 2pm, and
pre-arranged group tours on Thursdays, there’s also a free open day on 7th April, but advanced booking is required if you want to explore behind the scenes. The curators will be on hand to help you discover some of the city’s treasures and there’s a family-friendly programme of activities. Heritage has rarely been so much fun! THE LAST WORD
F
ans’ favourite Russell Anderson will forever be in the Aberdeen Football Club hall of fame for his 407 appearances in the number 4 jersey, making him presently sixth in the table of longest serving players. The former Aberdeen Grammar School pupil can also claim 11 caps for Scotland, albeit his debut was a cameo appearance as a sub for two minutes against Iceland in Reykjavik in 2004, when he never even touched the ball. Notice the school he attended, much better known for producing international rugby players, notably two medics. Dr Donny Innes played for Scotland before and after World War II and, sweetest of all, captained a winning side against England at Murrayfield, and Dr Doug Smith was team manager of the only British and Irish Lions team to beat the mighty All Blacks in a series in New Zealand back in 1971. That’s my first question to Russell, who retired from football in May 2015, and has trained himself to become an independent financial adviser with the ever-expanding Aberdein Considine law firm in Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Crescent. ‘Yes, it does seem odd to some people,’ says the 39-year-old, now quite at home in a business suit. However, outside of school, Russell played football with the King Street boys’ club and, later, with the Dyce equivalent. Not only has the married father-of-two made an apparently seamless transition into the world of financial planning, he has also spearheaded the Russell Anderson Development School, an initiative bringing high-intensity, fun exercise sessions to primary schools in the St. Machar catchment area of Aberdeen.
Says Russell, ‘This all came about through the 1999 Open golf champion Paul Lawrie, a huge Dons fan, who has himself worked wonders in bringing on young golf talent. He arranged for me to meet Sir Ian Wood with a view to seeking support for a school football initiative and the pilot project was after school at Riverbank Primary in Tillydrone. ‘In our first year 2014/15, we completed 48 sessions for 227 youngsters but such has been the impact, at the last count, that figure had risen to 1,754, with most of the work done by eight coaches in school time.’ Russell is delighted that there is a good feedback from staff in schools who see healthier and fitter pupils. Monthly keep-fit sessions for teachers at Cornhill Primary have also been a success and more of the same is promised in other schools. Russell pays tribute to volunteer Graeme Burnett for his hard graft in co-ordinating the scheme, backed by The Wood Foundation. Its success has also brought in a three-year sponsorship deal from Saltire Energy’s Mike Loggie, a huge backer of Aberdeen FC. However, funds are still needed and to that end, there is to be a first fundraising ball at the city’s Chester Hotel on May 26. For details email: russell@russellandersonfoundation.org Action man Russell also somehow manages to fit in being assistant manager for Formartine United in the Highland League and his older son, Jevan, 17, has signed a one-year contract with the club. Also at home with mum Claire is second son, Cole, 15. They must have to make appointments to see each other because, guess what, Claire is also a personal trainer at David Lloyd’s in Garthdee. Fit a fit family indeed!

Allison Taylor, David Quinn, Sandra McIntosh, Catherine Cowie and Evelyn Spiers will all know some well shod sprogs when they choose a pair of baby or toddler shoes from local online designers Flynn Livvy. Last, but not least, Rhona McCallan and Sandra Forbes will both be turning others green with envy when they and their companions head off to see Shrek the Musical at HMT.
