FROM THE

EDITOR Welcome to another fabulous issue of Trend. We’re all looking forwards to spring, with the promise of warmer days, new season styles and the chance to emerge from what seems like a long, if relatively mild, winter. When we’re surrounded by gloom, uncertainty and squabbling politicians, it’s important to make the most of the opportunities for pleasure that life presents us with. It might mean trying somewhere new to eat, abandoning Netflix and heading out on a date, taking a stroll through some of our wonderful scenery or visiting somewhere you haven’t been before. Spring is all about new adventures, green shoots and new possibilities. It’s a time to try something different. It might be your first foray into gardening, redecorating your bathroom or making a point of shopping local when it comes to adding a few key pieces to your wardrobe. We miss so much when we live our entire lives online. So, this spring, plant the seeds of a better life. We’re here to help you all the way.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS) & GUT PROBLEMS

VARICOSE VEINS

Troubled by IBS, indigestion or stomach problems? Come along and see our specialist team who can investigate your symptoms and work with you to treat these. Our medical team will make sure there is no underlying medical condition, through diagnostic tests if required. Our dietitians will also work with you to identify your triggers following a thorough review of your diet. If you want to talk to someone our psychotherapists or counsellors can teach you some coping strategies and listen to your concerns.

Do varicose veins stop you enjoying the summer? If the answer is yes, then they don’t have to. The Specialist Vein Service at The Aberdeen Clinic provides the most up-to-date non-invasive treatments, with no waiting list and at a very affordable price. Between 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 adults in the UK have varicose veins. They are more common with certain conditions and almost half of all pregnant women will develop varicose veins.

CARDIOVASCULAR SERVICE Did you know that men aged 65 are offered a scan to detect an aortic aneurysm on the NHS? Women do not get offered this routinely, because they tend to occur more frequently in men. However, an aortic aneurysm in a woman can have a more devastating effect. At The Aberdeen Clinic we offer a full range of cardiovascular services including aortic scanning, cardiac stress tests, echocardiograms as well as a full range of blood tests including cholesterol. Ladies (and Gentlemen) why not pop in for a chat or to have a free blood pressure check when you are passing?

We are able to treat varicose veins with minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound guided injection of foam. These techniques have revolutionised the recovery from varicose vein treatment and mean you do not have to book into an expensive private hospital and waste a whole day. At The Aberdeen Clinic you can have your procedure done and be home within a couple of hours. Our multi-disciplinary team are experts in helping patients select the optimal treatment for their varicose veins. SURGICAL PROCEDURES Fed up of waiting for your surgical procedure? We offer a range of procedures that can be done using a local anaesthetic, such as hernia repairs, vasectomy, removal of lumps and moles, mini face lifts and blephroplasties all with no waiting time. Your procedure can also be done at a time that suits you . What are you waiting for give us a call. If it is a hernia repair you need, then we offer the most cost effective procedures in Scotland! Linton and Mac predict the hottest hair colour trends for SS19 The Aberdeen salon’s colour expert Sarah Brown predicts the following for the coming season. Try Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2019 - Living Coral, or Sherbet hair, pioneered by the hair team at Marc Jacobs, both available in subtle through to attention-grabbing. Biscuit blonde will be the hottest way to do blonde hair in 2019, and the balayage technique will remain popular next year to add depth and movement.

DAVID LLOYD ABERDEEN HAS INTRODUCED AN AMAZING NEW FITNESS CLASS CALLED BLAZE. WE SENT GILL BUYERS ALONG TO TRY IT OUT.

B

LAZE is a brand new high energy boutique fitness class that will leave you buzzing with energy, feeling competitive and ready for anything.

The friendly class has a mix of people of all ages, sizes, shapes and capabilities. BLAZE is a great combination of cardio and strength training that offers a full body workout. There are treadmills, weight benches and combat bags.

heart rate capacity. Each blast of work lasts three minutes and it’s really surprising how quickly the 45 minute class passes. The coloured lights and pumping music uplift the energy as we pound away on the treadmills, perform simple moves on the weight benches and vent our frustrations by kicking and punching the combat bags. The trainer is there at every step of the way - driving, cajoling and encouraging.

All the first timers are given a brief overview of how the class works and get kitted out with a heart rate monitor and inner gloves. Regulars buy their own kit, but you can do the class without a monitor too. Ages and weights are discreetly taken and used to calculate work rates, which appear on the big screen.

By the end of the class, I’m slumped on the floor, but feeling elated. My performance stats are better than I expected and I’m already looking forward to my next BLAZE class. There’s nothing quite like it.

The trainer talks us through the class, sets our targets and says we’ll be aiming for a minimum of nine minutes in our red zones, which is 90%

H

aving grown up in a big city with far too much concrete and far too little greenspace, I have always treasured a quiet walk in the great outdoors. In terms of fitness, there is no single activity that offers such versatility - from a gentle 20-minute saunter on flat ground to a gruelling day-long hike to the top of a Munro, there is literally a walk to challenge every level of fitness, and nowhere offers more choice, or more stunning scenery, than Aberdeenshire. In the heart of Aberdeenshire, the Bennachie range dominates the landscape and offers a nearly limitless supply of walking opportunities. With four separate car parks, numerous peaks, forest paths, ancient ruins, and an 8-kilometre span, the only limitation here is your motivation. The Gordon Way Trail is the best way to fully explore Bennachie and if you are spending some time in the area, you may also want to climb the short, steep Dunnideer hill, in Insch, or tackle the more challenging Tap o’ Noth, in Rhynie, both with picturesque hillforts on top.

Coastal trails are a great way to take in some breath-taking scenery on the flat, while also doing a bit of wildlife spotting. If you are in the north, visit historic Portsoy harbour and meander along the circular route that takes you via the golden beach of Sandend. Or start in Fraserburgh Bay and make your way through the Waters of Philorth, a local nature reserve that is home to many seabirds. A bit further south you can explore the undulating dunes at Balmedie, or make your way to the stunning coastal town of Stonehaven, then explore the Dunnotar Woods and eventually find yourself at the haunting ruins of Dunnottar Castle. If you are looking for a Munro to bag, you must spend a day conquering Lochnagar, near Balmoral. Although it is a long, challenging climb, it is worth every drop of sweat when you find yourself at the top, mixing company with majestic wild stags and staring down the sheer cliff face to the loch below. But don’t stop there - the expanse from

Braemar to Banchory could keep you walking for a month. Try Banchory’s beloved Scolty Hill, Aboyne’s Muir of Dinnet to Burn o’ Vat, Braemar’s stunning loop around Loch Muick and the Balmoral Cairns Walk, on which you will see some very intriguing cairns erected by Queen Victoria’s family in the 19th century. Walking has always been my favourite way to stay fit, because it can also be so much more. If well-planned, it is a way to get your exercise, walk the dogs, brainstorm, meditate, work through life’s challenges, and catch up with friends, all at the same time. Of course, this is Scotland, so dress for every weather eventuality, then strap up your boots and get moving.

f the thought of going to the gym doesn’t put a smile on your face, then try the new fitness classes at Jump in, Aberdeen’s amazing trampoline park. Award-winning instructor Arlene Barclay says that trampoline fitness classes offer a host of benefits. Although you’ll be using many of your major muscle groups, trampolining protects your body from the shock trauma that running brings and also strengthens the back and core muscles. It even reaches the parts other forms of exercise can’t, by improving your lymphatic circulation which fights bacterial and viral infections and transports waste products out of the body.

Add in the reduced risk of sports injuries, improved balance, skin elasticity and bone-mass, toned muscles and burning off 600-800 hundred calories a class, and it’s clear that trampolining is the perfect all-round work out. Trampolining is great fun as well as a great exercise, and the whole family can join in fitness class at Go Jump In. Arlene and Leanne’s classes have a fun vibe with an electric atmosphere, pumping tunes and both instructors provide great guidance and motivation, so it’s one form of exercise that’ll have you jumping for joy! BEE-YÜ, CLEANSE, TIGHTEN & REGENERATE FACE MASQUE £88 | beeyuskincare.co.uk This premium mask comes from New Zealand and contains both bee venom and Manuka Honey. fascination with Korean beauty products has brought an influx of masks to the market over the last couple of years. Sheet masks come infused with anything from vitamin C to emollient moisturisers, gold particles to kelp, while jar based products are better for the environment and long term use. Far from being just for Instagram, masks can offer a deep treatment offering salon-style performance at home, leaving your skin relaxed, restored and rejuvenated. Here are a few we loved.

The plethora of natural ingredients combine with the bee venom to give a tingling sensation and a little redness when applied, so don’t try it just before anything important. Manuka Honey is known for its anti-microbial qualities and helps clear away dead skin cells, while the bee venom stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity and improving firmness and texture. The formulation also contains hyaluronic acid, clover flower extract, flower oils and Swertia Chirata extract which plumps the skin surface.

CLUBMAN CHARCOAL PEEL-OFF FACE MASK £7.95 | Superdrug

TROPIC CLEAR SKIN BLEMISH-FIGHTING MASK £20 | tropicskincare.com

This one is mainly for the chaps, but we wouldn’t blame anyone for having a shot. Activated Charcoal draws out toxins, debris and impurities from the skin, whilst clarifying and refreshing. You’ll also find Ghassoul, a fine natural clay from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, which helps to enhance skin clarity by lessening surface oils and blackheads. Suitable for all skin types, but - as with all charcoal masks - it takes a bit of effort to clean it off your skin and the sink afterwards! Messy but fun.

Try this once a week if you have acne or blemish prone skin. The thick green clay mask goes on smoothly and keeps breakouts at bay. It’s a vegan, cruelty-free mask which uses traditional natural and herbal ingredients including willow bark extracts, ginger, green clay, charcoal and raspberry leaf to minimise the appearance of pores and rebalance skin. It smells pleasant and would be a good choice for younger or oily skins.

JANE SCRIVNER MASQUERADE £35 | janescrivner.com This is a soothing multi-functional mask which offers a great weekly skin treat. The combination of decongestant, repairing and revitalising ingredients provide the perfect balance for more mature skins. It’s packed with essential fatty acids and vitamins, French clay, witch hazel, organic rose hip oils and calming immortelle. The end result is soft, calm, radiant skin that looks brighter and feels revived.

PMD CLEAN

£89 | uk.pmdbeauty.com Lastly, if you want to give the performance of your mask a bit of a boost, try the PMD clean. It’s a wonderful multipurpose beauty tool. The waterproof silicone bristles are soft on the skin, with a gentle anti-ageing massage action. Not only great for cleansing but also really helpful for applying moisturising masks and removing the remnants of dried clay or peel-off masks that always seem to get left behind.

eciding what to wear on a date generally involves pulling virtually everything out of your wardrobe, trying it on, and mixing it up into new and exciting outfits. At some point, you then realise that you have absolutely nothing to wear and head to the shops. The trick is to find that elusive outfit that fits well, suits your personality and matches the occasion. Touchy-feely fabric or a little bare skin work well, but full on floaty florals can be difficult to pull off if you normally live in jeans. There’s little point dressing up for a stroll in the country, and wearing a ball gown for a night of Domino’s and Netflix seems a little formal. So, here’s our pick of the best date night dressing, from a trip to the cinema to dinner à deux, so you’re ready for anything romance can throw at you…

N

ow that the three piece suit and the tie are becoming endangered in the workplace, more and more businesses are moving to a less formal dress code. Weirdly, casual dress codes can have more nuanced rules than the traditional take on office workwear. You can blame the leaders of tech companies who opted for a pared down wardrobe of t-shirts and trainers, to symbolise the new breed of entrepreneurs. Mark Zuckerburg may have a wardrobe of identical black t-shirts, but you might want to take a little more interest in what you wear. So how do you pull together a wardrobe that’s casual, but still looks professional? Stick to a restricted colour palette and acquire pieces that work well with everything else. Spend most of your budget on some decent jeans or casual trousers and a couple of

pairs of rugged boots or shoes and a jacket or two, then add some t-shirts, relaxed shirts and jumpers. Add interest through pattern, colour and texture, but avoid anything too loud or outré. Labels like Paul Smith or Gant are more suitable than Versace or Cavalli. You could make an appointment with a personal shopper if you need some guidance on what will suit you, or take a friend whose judgement you trust, if you know you’ll come home with a collection of clothes that don’t work for you. You also need to factor in your body shape, age, position and the culture you work in. Few people want to see a rotund fifty year old CEO in neon animal print Lycra. Never fear, we’ve picked out a few things that will help you look the business...

Trend Events benefit local charities

T

rend events are renowned for fantastic style, great entertainment and having an amazing day or night out, but they also raise funds for local charities. Over the last decade, our garden parties, fashion shows and lunches have raised over £60,000 for a variety of good causes. These include Charlie House, Befriend A Child, CLAN, Friends of Anchor, Cornerstone, VSA and the ARCHIE Foundation, Alzheimer’s, Children 1st, JRDF, MS Society, Sue Ryder and Maggie’s as well as smaller charities like Alfie’s Trust, Aberdeen Cyrenians and Home-Start. The one thing that we make sure of is that the generosity of those who have attended a Trend event makes a difference to these very worthy causes. A huge thank you to you all!

I

was born in Switzerland but grew up in South Africa, where life revolved around the kitchen, dinner parties and food. At 16, I took a summer job in my first kitchen and fell in love, and eventually decided to make it my career. I’ve travelled a fair bit and sampled everything from grilled Mopani worms to crocodile. My favourite is the street food in Bordeaux. The food at 210 Bistro is honest and homely, but with a touch of excitement. I enjoy the freedom to create new dishes and the harbour view from the bistro.

Away from the kitchen, I spend time at my allotment, growing as much fresh fruit and veg as the Aberdeen climate allows. Spending time at home is special as my family has a recent addition and I try and get out on my bike as much as possible.

Yoghurt Dressing: Juice of half a lemon 1 tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp caster sugar 1 garlic clove minced ¼ cup greek yoghurt 2 tbsp olive oil ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp ground white pepper

METHOD Salad: Cut the cherry tomatoes in half and season with salt and pepper and roast in the oven at 110OC for 1-2 hours. Make the Beetroot Falafel next. Beetroot Falalfel: Place the cumin seeds into the pestle & mortar and crush the seeds. Sweat the onions in some oil and add in the cumin seeds. Yoghurt Dressing: Combine all of the ingredients well. The dressing can be stored for up to three days in the fridge. When the tomatoes are ready, cook the falafels in the oven for around 15 -20 minutes at 180oC. These can also be frozen for three months for future use. Grill the salmon for 4-5 min on each side. To serve: Place the salad at the bottom of a wide, shallow bowl or plate, scatter with the cherry tomatoes. Then place the falafels on top followed by the salmon and drizzle with the dressing.

Vegetarian & Vegan Foodstory

Bonobo Café

Café Harmony

Foodstory is a laid-back delight, with a mellow soundtrack, genuinely lovely staff and really, really tasty food. There’s a shop and yoga space upstairs, a veg box scheme and even a new zero waste branch at the University of Aberdeen. Foodstory is as much a community as a café.

Bonobo Café is Aberdeen’s first all-vegan restaurant, located on Skene Street and open every day of the week. With its city centre location, Bonobo offers takeaway or dine-in, with seating upstairs in either the cosy indoor dining area or the charming rooftop garden.

Café Harmony is the perfect hideaway from the elements in the city centre. Cosy and welcoming, with a good-sized menu, this restaurant feels like a real find. There is a focus on fresh, local food and the vegetarian/vegan dishes definitely get equal billing with the meat and fish, both in variety and flavour.

We popped in for dinner, though the café is also popular for breakfasts, lunches or a quick coffee and cake.

We enjoyed lunch at a bustling Bonobo on a weekday, and I must admit this was my first time dining in a strictly vegan restaurant.

My carnivorous beloved announced that his generous bowlful of chunky veg chilli, brown rice, nachos, vegan tzatziki, vegan nacho cheese, salad and rocket was so good that we should start eating vegan a couple of times a week!

In the interests of variety, I opted for both the soup and salad of the day. The soup was a silky smoked tomato and lentil, and the salad was a flavourful mix of greens, spiced quinoa, roasted winter vegetables and currants. My son went for the Bonobo Mac, a pasta dish with a creamy squash and Sheese sauce, and a side of tattie scones. The food was truly delicious, the kind of meal that you know someone has put a lot of thought and energy into, and the kind that leaves you wanting to make more effort when cooking at home.

13-15 Thistle Street, Aberdeen foodstorycafe.co.uk

I opted for a soothing lentil and spinach curry, which came with shards of poppadum, naan bread, salad, chutney and rocket. Perfectly balanced spicing and the fresh rocket brought an extra vitality to the dish. This was followed, purely in the interests of research, by possibly the best chocolate brownie in Aberdeen; a slab of smooshy-gooey chocolate heaven. My beloved approved of both his vegan ice cream and a wonderful carrot cake. Great food, great atmosphere and great value.

73-75 Skene Street, Aberdeen bonobotribe.co.uk

Amazingly, the prices are comparable to Bonobo’s non-vegan equivalents, so there really is no excuse for not eating this well every day.

21-23 Bon-Accord Terrace, Aberdeen cafeharmony.co.uk

We shared a vegan Harmony Earth platter to start with additional concasse tomato bruschetta every single morsel on the board eliciting praise from the whole table. Main plant-based options included vegetable tagine, homemade lasagne and mushroom risotto, whilst grilled squid stuffed with king prawn couscous and Harmony monkfish were enjoyed by the fish eaters. Beers are from Six Degrees North and Brew Toon in Peterhead, alongside gins from local producers.

A

s a previous Development Chef for Baxters, I love soup, be it broth, chowder or good old tattie soup. Soup is foolproof, quick and always comforting. Be adventurous with your vegetable combinations and pulses, add a rich stock and slowly cook. We make our own stock, but there are good quality products available. Soup is the answer when you have some

tired veg at the end of the week. Keep it chunky or use your stick blender for a smoother texture. Try butternut squash with some coconut milk and a hint of chilli, or try cream of cauliflower with cumin seeds. Adding fresh herbs, meats, fried onions, garlic croutons or cream can take your soup to a new level. You can even add more stock to a leftover stew and extra vegetables to make a stoup!

Ingredients • 25ml Bulleit Rye • 25ml Antica Formula • 5ml Cherry Infused Amaro Montenegro • 2 dash Dr Adam Elmegirab’s Brazilian Bitters • Coffee Foam Cherry on the Cake is a twist on a classic Manhattan which is rich in flavour and plays with texture. The Coffee foam brings a bitter element to the drink to add balance and mouth feel. our bathroom may be a restful haven of tranquility or the source of contention and family traffic jams each morning. Yet the smallest room in the house is also the one we’re most reluctant to redecorate, which means it can become dated and depressing. Interiors magazines are often unhelpful, showing freestanding baths in huge rooms with floor to ceiling windows and views over lakes or distant mountains. It’s a far cry from the spaces most of us have available and a non-starter if you have neighbours! Yet, with good planning, it’s possible to combine an elegant, contemporary design aesthetic and exceptional functionality. Don’t be afraid to move the bath or sanitary ware about to optimise your space. Similarly, altering your radiator’s position and style can remove design limitations without adding significant extra costs. Changing your plumbing is not as expensive as you might think and can make an enormous difference. If space is at a premium, a bath with shower makes good sense and bath taps that include a hand-held spray head are essential for washing your hair, sluicing off grubby children and even cleaning the bath easily. Look for baths that are hardwearing, scratch-resistant and easy to maintain, and opt for a statement power shower that’ll wake even a teenager up first thing. Prices vary enormously. You can buy a bathroom suite for under £200, or splash

out on a hand carved limestone egg bath for the price of a two bed flat in town. If you want something special, have a look at handmade wooden baths, Japanese baths or an Edwardian style. Walk in showers are a good alternative to a wet room and it’s worth checking out specialist options if you have mobility issues. If you do have the space, consider a steam shower or an infra-red sauna cabinet. The latter have been shown to add to health and wellbeing enormously. Have a tour round some of the local bathroom suppliers to gather ideas and get some free planning advice. Current trends are moving towards a less angular, more relaxed feel, with bold statement shower heads and streamlined, but generous storage. Taps are tending towards minimalist. Treat yourself to a wardrobe sized bathroom cabinet. Some designers are reintroducing colour to bathroom suites. Black looks dramatic, but white remains the popular choice, so run riot with colour elsewhere. Neutrals may end up being a little too hotel room impersonal, a sunny yellow lifts the morning moodiness and blues and greens are calming. Deep blues and purples can be opulent or overwhelming while a deep baroque red can work startlingly well, creating a luxurious cocoon with just a hint of the sybaritic. All you need now is to find your rubber duck.

There’s nothing like your own home-grown fruit and vegetables, whether it’s tasty tomatoes or even just a pot or two of herbs or salad leaves. The good news is that it takes very little expertise to produce something delicious… Let’s start with the basic ingredients. You’ll need some seeds, bulbs or plants depending on what you’re growing, some containers, a spade or trowel, a watering can or hose and some compost. If you’re growing in pots indoors, choose a nice bright spot, like a sunny windowsill, worktop or porch. The ideal, when planting outdoors is to find a spot where you will get six or more hours of sunlight each day. Raised beds are good if you don’t have a lot of space. There are some great kits out there for this purpose or, you can simply use wooden boarding or new, pressure treated sleepers to construct. If the bed is more than 20cm/ 8inches high, I would suggest lining the inside of the bed with an impermeable membrane and remember to leave the bottom of the bed open to the soil below for drainage.

Use a good multi-purpose compost, this should work well for growing most fruit and vegetables. Outdoor plots may benefit from soil improvers or conditioners depending on the soil. If using pots, make sure your container is deep enough for the roots of the fruit and vegetables that you have chosen to grow and has drainage holes at the bottom. Different crops need different conditions so always follow the instructions on the seed packaging. Watering is also key to producing a succulent crop of veg. Indoor plants can be watered using self watering systems such as simple capillary watering trays that will keep plants watered automatically for 14 days - these are readily available online or at your local garden centre. Outdoor plants don’t need as much attention but still need to be watered regularly during the warmer months or when there is wind evaporation. Best rule of ‘thumb’ is to stick it into the soil and if it’s dry - then water! If you don’t have access to a garden, think about applying for an allotment, join a community garden, or ask a family or friend if you could use a spot in their garden. You can also use window boxes or vertical garden systems to grow salads or herbs. You can even recycle large plastic bottle to grow herbs, or use a plant pot to grow tomatoes, or go high-tech with a home hydroponic gardening kit, which uses considerably less water than soil gardening and fewer pesticides. You can find home kits online.

Once everything is planted out, use flexible piping and cut into lengths tucking the ends down the inside of the sides of the raised bed at intervals so that the ‘hoops’ will support horticultural fleece which should be tied off at both ends and weighted down at the sides so it doesn’t blow off. This provides protection from the

our wedding dress will probably be the most expensive outfit - and certainly the most special - you ever buy, so head to Edinburgh’s exclusive bridal boutique Olive Jones for your perfect dress and accessories. Owner Rachel Iravani stocks amazing dresses from desirable labels that you won’t find in the North- east, so it’s worth making an appointment when you’re looking for your dream dress. The Dundas Street location is just minutes from Waverley Station with parking outside. ‘We’re the exclusive Scottish stockist for all our designers but one, so you won’t find our dresses in other shops in Scotland. At Olive Jones, we want to make every aspect of finding your dream wedding dress an experience to treasure’, Rachel explained. ‘A bride should feel beautiful and radiant in her chosen dress. We open by appointment only, so each bride and her party has exclusive use of the boutique, with celebratory fizz on tap. Choosing the dress becomes an intimate

and personal experience. I advise booking 10-12 months before the big day and ordering about 8 months in advance, though we can sometimes offer a shorter lead time. ‘For me, an Olive Jones bride is someone who doesn’t want to dress up as a bride but wants, quite simply, to be herself as a bride. That’s why we are the exclusive Scottish boutique for designers such as Australia’s Karen Willis Holmes’, stylish modern look, London-based Charlie Brear’s relaxed, effortless style and Mikaella, known as the Canadian masters of elegant minimalism, with new designers being added this spring’. ocal independent financial advisors, Central Investment, recently moved office from their longstanding residence at Albert Street to new premises on Albyn Place. As a result, the business donated four lorries’ worth of office furniture to Aberdeen’s leading crisis charity, Somebody Cares. The company, which had been at Albert Street for over 40 years, moved to the new location in August. The move provided an opportunity to give back to the community by donating much of its unrequired furniture along with various kitchen appliances. Despite Aberdeen being the oil and gas capital of Europe, in 2016 the city had over 18,000 people living in the most deprived 20% of Scotland. Many families now still have little over £50 a week to live on with over 27% of all city children living in families with extremely limited resources. Crisis charity, Somebody Cares, was set up in 2003 in order to help people in need around Aberdeen. They now serve over 62,000 families and individuals by providing them with food and

clothes as well as furnishing over 2,200 homes in 2017 alone, all for free. Central Investment thought it was extremely important to help their community with Derek Robertson, managing director, saying, ‘In the current economic climate it is more important than ever that we help out in any way we can. We know the difficulties our city has faced in the last few years and we are delighted to be able to assist in this way. ‘Somebody Cares has helped thousands of people over the last 15 years and we hope our contribution can have a very positive impact on their patrons’, Mr. Robertson continued. Somebody Cares’ CEO, Brian Taylor, was delighted with the contribution, adding, ‘We are so grateful to Central Investment for their generous donation. The office supplies they gave us have not only helped families, some items have also been sold which helps us raise funds to enable us to keep the services we offer for free. Their contribution is a great help to our ongoing, and much needed, cause.’

There are opportunities for support and fundraising volunteers. Those interested should contact CLAN's north area coordinator Angie Howarth on 07720 737500, or email: turriff@clanhouse.org.

As we impatiently watch the sunset getting gradually later, and scrape the windscreen for the umpteenth time - our minds naturally turn to thoughts of a sunny break. words by Jan Leatham

W

here could we go this summer from Aberdeen? Somewhere the sun will shine and crystal blue waters beckon invitingly, with delicious food and‌ Daydream no longer, flights to the Dodecanese island of Rhodes start this May from Aberdeen. Rhodes is a large Greek island, south-east of Greece and facing Turkey with

Lindos wall-to-wall sunshine, beaches galore and a fascinating medieval past. Wander the cobbled streets of Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site once home to the Knights of St. John who ruled for 200 years and built 30 castles throughout the island; or head to lovely Lindos and climb the steps to the Acropolis and pano views of the archipelago. Both Rhodes Old Town

and Lindos are car-free as are many of the outlying islands, perfect for winding down and really relaxing. There really is a beach for everyone on Rhodes, from family-friendly Agathi and Tsampika to wind and kite-surfers’ paradise Prasonisi on the southern tip of the island. This is the spot where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet, creating perfect surfing weather. If you want

Families are well catered for, with the highly-rated Water Park at Faliraki and Aquarium in Rhodes Town, as well as endless beach fun and friendly hotels. If you’re visiting

Rhodes has many neighbouring islands near enough for a day trip: Symi is just a couple of hours away by daily ferry and an hour will get you to tiny Halki, the smallest inhabited island in the chain. Both are still traditional fishing villages with colourful houses and tavernas serving local food including fish caught that day. There is plenty of accommodation too if you fancy an overnight stay. Fly every Wednesday from Aberdeen to Rhodes starting 1 May – 18 September 2019 with TUI.

Aberdeen makes New York Times destination list The New York Times has included Aberdeen in their list of 52 must-visit places in the world in 2019, citing Aberdeenshire’s stunning coastline, historic castle trail and Royal Deeside as major attractions.

A whale of an exhibition An enormous six-metre model whale has gone on display in a community exhibition called Wondrous Whales and Windy Sails. Members of the Buchan Day Opportunities group created the unique showcase in the Arbuthnot Museum in Peterhead, which is open to the public until 16 March. Paintings and collages have been created over the last six months to go beside the artefacts already in the collection at the museum on St Peter Street.

24 hours to make a musical The 24 hour Musical, which will be staged at Aberdeen’s Tivoli Theatre on Saturday March 9 at 7.30pm, aims to connect people from different theatre companies with various skills and experiences. Noone will know beforehand which show they will have to learn,

rehearse and perform in just 24 hours. It will support Make 2nds Count charity, which raises funds for research into secondary breast cancer. All profits from the unique project will go to the charity. thetivolitheatre.com

Coffee Apothecary opens in Ellon The well-loved Coffee Apothecary in Udny has opened a second café in Ellon in conjunction with local beer giants Brewdog. Jonny and Ali will be continuing their dedication to using local meat, fish, eggs and vegetables on the menu alongside the best artisan roast coffee Scotland has to offer, as well as sourcing ethically traded dry ingredients. The menu includes homemade granola, dhal, wraps, pancakes and lots of popular homebaking.

Once you have lived in Aberdeen for a while, the Harbour somehow becomes part of the landscape - it actually begins to feel normal to pass through the shadow of a huge offshore vessel as you walk down from Union Street to do some shopping or see a movie. But the impact that a harbour can have on a city and its sustainability cannot be ignored.

ADVERTISEMENTS | 83

I

ncredibly, the first written reference to Aberdeen as a shipping port dates back to the early 1100s, although the waters will have been used for trading purposes even before that. Over the centuries, there have been continual improvements made to the infrastructure, with the greatest changes coming in the 1800s, resulting in the layout we know today which covers 378 acres of land and water, and handles four million tonnes of cargo each year. With their eye on the future and the need to accommodate ever-growing ships and the city’s changing economic mix, the Harbour Board decided that the time had come once again for major investment. The £350 million state-of-the-art Aberdeen South Harbour project is already underway in Nigg Bay, just south of the existing harbour. Due to be ready for business in 2020, the new facility will offer a marked step up in marine capacity, with increased water depths, flexible loading facilities along the 1,400 metres of quay, and a significantly wider turning circle for the larger vessels. Understanding the important link between this new project and its impact on the wider community, a visitor centre has been established where members of the public, and other interested groups, can see for themselves how this feat of engineering is progressing. The Visitor Centre is open to the public every Saturday from 10am until 3pm, more detail can be found at ahep.co.uk/VisitorCentre.aspx

If you are keen to learn more about the history of the sea and its relationship to Aberdeen, you will want to visit the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, located on the historic Shiprow in a striking building that incorporates Provost Ross’s House from 1593 and offers visitors unrivalled views of the busy harbour just outside. The museum itself spans many floors and covers a wide range of topics from the oil and gas industry to fishing to marine conservation efforts. With free admission, plenty of interactive exhibits and very helpful staff, the museum is a great way to spend an afternoon. In a coastal North Sea city like Aberdeen, it is actually unusual to meet someone whose life has not been impacted in some way by the sea and the industries that rely on it. The next time you pass through the shadow of the ships in Aberdeen Harbour, pause for a moment to reflect on the history that has made the harbour what it is today, and the efforts being made to make it great for future generations.

Doric Film Festival Joe bloggs

CREATIVE | 89

The first Doric Film Festival is being launched by Scots Radio. Before the festival kicks off in June, aspiring film makers are being encouraged to create five minute films in Doric.

T

he judges would love to see ‘hunners o’ entries fae a range o fowk fae a across the North-east of Scotland’. Entrants are encouraged from schools, individuals and community groups. You don’t need to know anything about film-making as the key skills will be taught, for free, at training sessions across the North-east. The theme is, ‘What the North East of Scotland Means to Me’. There are six categories - Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Community Groups, Students, Individual (Professional) and Individual (Non-Professional) - with a £500 prize in each category. Director of Scots Radio, Frieda Morrison, explained, ‘The Gaelic Film Festival has been enjoying success for 11 years, so we wanted to encourage story-telling in Scots - and in this first instance, in Doric. It’s the perfect time to use 21st century technology to celebrate the Scots language in this remarkable corner of Scotland.

FRIEDA MORRISON

‘The film competition is also aboot bringing fowk thegither. We’d love to see local community groups an school bairns, learning new film skills, bi recording their ain tales or stories. It’s aboot self-expression - feeling free to speak in yir ain language to cover the adventures, history, struggles or

plans o the local area and beyond. We are encouragin groups tae write scripts an spik an record new music - an it disna hae tae be complicated. The music could be played on a single whistle or a few chords on a guitar for instance.’ The festival welcomes entrants from experienced media professionals, but it’s also a great opportunity for people to learn film-making techniques. Training sessions, featuring expert advice from broadcasting professionals, will pass on essential film-making skills. Topics covered include pre-production, camera operation, effective audio capture, scriptwriting, storyboarding and basic editing and post production. Even those who have never made a film before can participate. This means that groups of all ages and backgrounds can enter - from bowling clubs and Scouts to history groups and teachers. ‘At Scots Radio we dae things differently - broadcasting in the Scots language, thereby capturing a slice o Scottish life that simply isna heard onywye else. We’d noo like to encourage the wider North-east community tae hae their say. This is the first film festival o its kind, wi Doric at its heart, so ony-body fae Forres to Dundee can enter.’ Film entries must be no more than 5 mins in duration, with all text and dialogue in Doric, and completed entries must be received by the end of May 2019. An awards ceremony will be held in June 2019, where the short-listed films are presented on the big screen, before the winners of each category are announced. Find out more at doricfilmfestival.com

F

ancy a cosy spring getaway? Well, it doesn’t get much cosier than the delightful Boat Inn at Aboyne. Our winner and their guest will enjoy dinner from the seasonal menu featuring freshly prepared, locally sourced produce. The menus are imaginative, fun and, above all, tasty with great gluten-free, veggie and kids options. They’ll even include a bottle of their excellent house wine. You can then retire to the most splendid of rooms in the beautifully refurbished Norwegian designed Boat House across the newly landscaped grounds, which doubles the Inn’s accommodation to sixteen rooms. Like the rooms in the main

part of the inn, the décor is striking, individual and every comfort has been considered. It’s the last word in simple luxury, with a roll-top bath, en suite shower room, balcony and the kind of bed you could happily snuggle in all morning if it wasn’t for the irresistible lure of one of the Boat Inn’s wonderful breakfasts! The Boat Inn, overlooking the Dee, is a charming family-owned 18th century coaching inn, which retains a welcoming and relaxing feel. The restaurant has been featured in the Michelin Guide and Scotland the Best for the past few years, but remains unstuffy, with fine real ales, real wood fires and live music some evenings.

It’s The Boat Inn’s blend of cosy traditionalism, excellent service, superb food and striking interiors that makes you feel instantly at home. No wonder it’s also become popular for special occasions including small weddings, quiz nights, and charity events. The Boat Inn offers the perfect weekend or mid-week getaway.
