ROC Clinics’ CEO Dr Cristina Romete says the clinic is planning for the launch later this year of a State of Art Diagnostic Centre and Secondary Care consulting and assessment suites.
Back to Gut!
Having explored conventional approaches for many years with poor patient engagement, the clinic is taking a more integrative approach to fatigue management and explores gut health, gut microbiome and nutritional deficiencies as a possible solution for those who suffer. ‘All Disease begins in Gut’, Hippocrates said, and he may have been right. The gut is a major centre for hormonal, immune and neuro-transmitters and at the core of our lives.

Prostate Assessments
The best of PSA Tests
Over the past 10 years and more, evidence has come out to suggest that different fractions of the PSA are important when interpreting the result. Unfortunately, this breakdown of the PSA is not available freely on the NHS or at many private clinics. Here at ROC, we have undertaken this analysis for the past 10 years. Certain fractions of the PSA suggest that is more likely you may have cancer and further tests may be recommended. These fractions can be abnormal even with a normal total PSA.
Hormonal Assessments The Personalised Approach

ISSUE N0. 74 | FEB/MAR 20
FROM THE
EDITOR Hello and welcome to another packed issue of Trend. February and March always seem to be about emerging from winter and looking forward to spring and summer. It’s like a pause before the curtain goes up on a host of events and activities, but it’s also a time to savour and indulge all your senses. Snowdrops and daffodils start to blanket the roadsides with the promise of warmth and colour, green starts to replace the muted muddy tones of grey and brown and everything feels fresh and new. We’re all excitedly looking forward to the first of our popular lunch events, our Garden Party in April and - most of all - our Summer Ball, which is at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa on 19 June. We’re supporting Voluntary Services Aberdeen in their 150th year. Come
to think of it, a pair of tickets to the ball or the garden party might make a wonderful gift for Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day! There’s no need to wait for spring or summer to start enjoying yourself, though. We’ve come up with plenty of places for you to visit in the next couple of months, whether it’s taking the kids to a museum, striking a pose in the newly reopened art gallery like our fashion shoot model, discovering more about our amazing local produce at Aberdeen Restaurant Week or one of the many food and drink festivals, trying a sound bath or even popping off to somewhere a little warmer. at the Aberdeen Clinic Every 15 seconds somewhere in the world a Hydra Facial is performed. What is it about this facial that makes it so popular? Its appeal is that it can help a wide range of skin conditions from acne to wrinkles, dry skin and redness. You can have the full hour or nip in for a quick 30 minute 3 step treatment in your lunch break.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT DO FOR YOUR SKIN? A HydraFacial treatment can improve and benefit your skin by hydrating, brightening, plumping, and giving a clear complexion. It can also improve signs of aging as the treatment reduces fine lines and wrinkles, increases firmness, evens tone, texture, and brown spots, plus reduces enlarged pores.
HydraFacial is a ‘medical grade hydradermabrasion’ which essentially is a resurfacing treatment that clears out your pores and hydrates your skin. HydraFacial is a 4 step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts and hydrates the skin with serums that have anti-aging and antioxidant properties. Boosters can be added during the treatment to aid any specific skin requirements for example hydrating lip or calming red and sensitive skin. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TREATMENT? The HydraFacial treatment starts with cleansing by removing the dead skin cells and excess sebum from the skin. Next, a mix of salicylic and glycolic acids are applied to the skin to break up any dirt and oil that's clogging pores. Then, the HydraPeel Tip is used to essentially vacuum out blackheads, dirt, oil, and impurities, while hydrating, plumping, and nourishing serums are simultaneously applied to the skin.
Side effects are minimal but you will receive a full assessment prior to your treatment so that we can discuss your skin type and run through the procedure and recommend the appropriate serum and boosters if required. Call today to book an appointment or for more information on our special red carpet event to launch the service officially.

Sound baths are possibly the most relaxing way you can spend an hour or so.
HEALTH | 19
Y
ou can feel the tension ebb away from your body on a tide of sound harmonics as you snuggle down on a yoga mat complete with a pillow and blanket. You are immersed in a comforting cloud of sounds generated by a combination of Tibetan singing bowls, Koshi chimes, Tingsha cymbals and Rain sticks. Somehow, it’s the same drowsy atmosphere of warmth, comfort and of safety as your childhood memories of just one more bedtime story before lights out.
20 | HEALTH
Sound therapy is one of the oldest forms of healing, dating back to the first bone flutes and resonant rocks well over 40,000 years ago. There is evidence to suggest that the Ancient Egyptians used it and it has a long history of use in traditional forms of medicine from Central America to China. In the Bible, David played his harp to lift King Saul's depression and Handel’s Water Music was created to help King George the Third’s problems with memory loss and depression. More recent scientific research has shown that certain sound frequencies help to heal the body and speed up the body’s natural healing processes, as well as boosting mood and reducing both stress and chronic pain levels. Some people have theorised that since every molecule in our bodies contains electrons which vibrate at different frequencies, our bodies respond to sound not only on a physical level, but mentally and emotionally, too. Think of the way a song can make us feel happy and confident while another might make us melancholy or move us to tears.
As well as pop-up sound healing events around the region, the Haven in Stonehaven offers a regular sound bath session on Wednesday evenings or Friday mornings with Carol Folan of Carma Holistic, while Sound as a Bell in Insch offers a range of sound based treatments including work with tuning forks, sound baths and gong baths. Expect to pay around £35-£45 for a private session of just under an hour, or £10 per class. Block bookings at the Haven are available for £43 for five sessions and Carol also offers a healing combination of Reiki and sound for individuals. carolcarma thehaven.co.uk sound-as-a-bell.co.uk

Sound baths and sound therapy are said to reduce stress, depression, anxiety and anger levels, helping release negative emotions and mental states. Those experiencing fibromyalgia, ME or chronic fatigue report benefits and it is said to improve sleep quality.

s far back as 2500 BC, ancient Egyptians were using isolated cold therapy to treat injuries and inflammation. Today, advances in technology mean that Cryotherapy is more accessible than ever, making it a much sought-after treatment for an extensive range of conditions, from acne to scar removal to hair loss. Fit & Skin Studio offers both Localised Cryotherapy and Cryotherapy Facials. With Cryotherapy Facial, a specially designed mask is placed over the face for several minutes, dramatically reducing the temperature of the skin which, in turn, shrinks underlying blood vessels and encourages collagen production. The result is a reduction in redness and inflammation and a tightening of pores, which leaves your skin vibrant and more youthful even after just one session.
Localised Cryotherapy uses the same technology to target inflammation and scar tissue in other areas of the body, which can significantly improve damage from injuries. Because Cryotherapy is a natural treatment, it is safe and effective even for teenagers, and can be administered frequently to maximise results. When used in conjunction with Fit & Skin’s Microneedling face therapy, Cryotherapy has produced fantastic results against acne and the associated scarring that often accompanies it. Full Monthly Membership to Fit & Skin costs only £50 per month, giving you unlimited fitness classes, one localised cryotherapy session per month and a host of other benefits. 440 Union Street, Aberdeen AB10 1TR Tel: 01224 959800 fitandskin studio

A gift for you both at Treat Company Why get a pregnancy massage? While every pregnancy is unique, a woman's body changes as the baby grows, which can cause discomfort for a mum-to-be. As the abdomen grows and your body's centre of gravity shifts outward, your posture changes to realign its centre of gravity over your hips. For some women, the stress on the joints and muscles results in low back, pelvic, neck, shoulder, or sciatic nerve pain. Some swelling, or odema, is also normal during pregnancy. Massage may help with the fluid build-up that tends to be more pronounced in your legs, ankles, and feet. How is pregnancy massage different? The most common massage technique used during pregnancy massage is effleurage, a long, gliding
stroke used in Swedish massage. If you're used to strong pressure, you'll likely find the pressure during pregnancy massage gentle and light. Designed to relieve discomforts of pregnancy, prenatal massage is also used to boost mood, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being. exclusive treatments for superb skin NY Skin Clinic has rapidly become established as an outstanding provider of exclusive aesthetic treatments for those who want to look better. Clinical Director, Elaine Wood, has over two decades of nursing and clinical aesthetic treatment experience. Elaine explained, ‘We’re currently the only clinic in Scotland to offer Morpheus8. Morpheus8 works like a minimally invasive, non-surgical, anti-aging facelift. Morpheus8 uses fractionated radio-frequencies which have been shown in rigorous scientific tests to reduce sagging and excess fat in the face and neck, increase collagen production, improve acne scars, fade stretch marks and reduce wrinkles, sculpting subdermal fat for a youthful appearance. ‘Forma is one of the most advanced, effective skin rejuvenation treatments available today. It’s painless, non-invasive, works for all skin types and there is no downtime. Forma treats wrinkles and sagging skin on the entire face and neck as well as restoring definition. The result is skin that is smoother, thicker, plumper and more elastic, with improved
definition to the cheekbones and jaw, a good alternative to fillers with a natural effect’.
I’m so pleased with my Forma treatments. Now, when I see myself in the mirror first thing, I don’t contemplate a face lift! It’s a subtle and natural difference, but I feel I look well rested and fresher-faced. Megan
Elaine continued, ‘NY Skin Clinic is the only Aberdeen clinic to offer the award-winning Dermalux LED Phytotherapy treatment and we also do DiolazeXL laser treatments for fast, safe and permanent hair removal. Papillon offers tips for ecofriendly gardens The devastating Australian bushfires have added to the growing awareness of the impact of climate change. Increasingly, people are making changes, big and small, to help tackle the crisis. According to Papillon, a garden design & landscaping firm in Aberdeen, there are lots of changes we can make to our gardens to help the environment. Here’s Papillon’s top three tips: 1. Welcome more native plants into your borders. Natives thrive in the Scottish climate and therefore require less chemicals and additives. Because they establish well, they produce an abundance of food and shelter for the visiting wildlife. Examples include heather, bluebells and rowan. 2. A pristine lawn, while attractive, comes at a price, requiring regular maintenance and often chemicals. Allow nature to recover part of the lawn, or all of it, in the form of a flowering meadow. This will provide colour and a perfect ‘beastie’ habitat and less mowing! 3. Compost your food and plant waste. This will provide nutritious food for your garden, whilst reducing waste and is an eco-friendly alternative to chemicals.

here are three approaches to male skin care. Ignoring your skin is acceptable if you’re the skipper on a 1930’s trawler, but not for the modern man of today. You could swipe your partner’s products but this inevitably leads to domestic disharmony. Which leaves you buying your own. Doing so can feel bewildering, but the assistants are always happy to help. Similarly, many beauty salons offer specialised facials for men and can provide guidance on the products that will best suit your skin. Small specialist brands can also have a big positive impact on male skin, so here are a few products from boutique brands that merit a place in your skincare regime…

It’s perfect for anyone who spends long hours in front of a computer. It’s turbo-charged with caffeine, Vitamin B5, red algae and hyaluronic acid. £40 eyeko.co.uk
As a product name, it makes a big promise, but this powerful serum contains hyaluronic acid, marine collagen and elastin, amino acids and blue algae which has the effect of banishing blemishes, toning the skin, restoring radiance and helping reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes with regular use. groundedbodyscrub.co.uk
Hands are often overlooked, but they show our age faster than other parts of our bodies because they take such rough treatment. This soothing cream helps hands heal, softening rough, dry skin. The CBD is said to be anti-inflammatory and the scent of sandalwood, lavender and jasmine make it idea for use last thing at night, as the gentle, acceptably masculine, scent aids sleep. £20. greenstemcbd.com/cbd-skincare

Bluebeard’s Revenge Beard Grooming Kits
Magnitone SuperNaturals Pure Sonic Cleansing Starter Kit
With facial hair being increasingly popular, it’s important to take good care of your beard, which needs as much care as the hair on your head if you’re to avoid looking like a member of the chorus of a gloomy Russian play. The Bluebeards Revenge Beard Grooming Kit consists of a pocket-friendly travel beard brush that allows for maintenance on the move and a sweet smelling, manly beard oil that leaves facial fuzz smelling and looking good. £23.99. bluebeards-revenge.co.uk

The cleanser mixes the purifying power of activated charcoal with astringent wasabi and antiseptic tea tree extract, while the moisturiser contains healing magnesium and zinc. £60.00. magnitone.co.uk
Opatra Instant Wrinkle Eliminator Opatra’s Instant Wrinkle Eliminator is definitely one of the big guns. It’s one of very few products which offer a realistic alternative to using Botox and fillers for wrinkles. At £349, you’re going to have to hide it from your partner, but the 20ml serum dispenser contains up to 160 eye treatments. It works by forming an invisible flexible layer on the skin which gently pulls wrinkled, sagging skin to the surface. Fine lines and wrinkles, eye puffiness and bags are all instantly reduced, meaning you’ll look instantly younger. opatra.com

Coming from a large family of six, Lesley discovered her love of cooking from a young age whilst helping her mum in the kitchen and has since forged a career from her passion.
Despite working in a range of top venues, Lesley has still to cook for anyone famous, but if she ever had the opportunity she would choose the fish dish she created for last year’s awards - stonebass with fondant potatoes, celeriac puree, breaded langoustine tail and shellfish bisque.
The 21-year-old chef de partie at No.1 Bar & Grill, has been a finalist twice for North-east Young Chef of the Year and has worked at a range of top Aberdeen restaurants and hotels since leaving school aged 15. ‘At No.1, we focus on using a lot of local produce so this has allowed me to focus on Scottish cuisine with a modern twist. Instagram is a good influence and I follow a lot of London and international chefs so I always see new and interesting styles which helps me to come up with ideas.
No.1’s Chef de Partie, Lesley Lovie
‘We all bounce ideas off each other at No.1 and it’s a real team effort every time that we create new seasonal menus.’

Away from the kitchen, Lesley, from Aberdeen, has another talent and has played the guitar since she was seven years old, so music is her passion outside of work. As for her own favourite food and guilty pleasure, Lesley has a big sweet tooth and loves a good, homemade cookie with milk chocolate, white chocolate and raspberry and sticky toffee are her top picks! So, of course, her chosen recipe to share with Trend readers had to be the hugely popular No.1 chocolate fondant.

Dark chocolate fondant, salted caramel, banana chips, & banoffee ice cream (serves 4) CHOCOLATE FONDANT
SALTED BUTTER CARAMEL
You will need four double buttered moulds 100g plain flour 100g unsalted butter 100g 75% dark chocolate 100g caster sugar Two egg yolks Two whole eggs
400g caster sugar 200ml water 200ml double cream 100g salted butter (diced) Pinch of salt
• Pre-heat oven at 180oC • Butter four moulds the night before • Melt butter and chocolate then allow to cool slightly • In a bowl, whisk the sugar with the whole eggs and yolks until white and fluffy • Fold in the flour until mixed through • Mix in the melted butter and chocolate mixture • Pour into the moulds and set in fridge for an hour • Then cook at 180oC for 10-12 minutes
• Melt the sugar and water until light brown in colour - be careful as this becomes extremely hot • Pour in the cream and whisk until mixed • Slowly whisk in butter until golden and smooth, add the salt and cool. To assemble - place salted caramel on the plate, pop the chocolate fondant straight from the oven on top and dress with shop bought banana chips and banoffee ice cream. I must confess that brunch is my favourite meal, so when I heard about Revolución de Cuba’s brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, I was intrigued
words by Courtney O’Grady
R
evolución de Cuba sits just off Belmont Street in the Academy Centre Courtyard, although once you step through the door, the atmosphere is pure Havana. From the playful menus and bright tableware to the full-length rum and cocktail bar, this is a restaurant born of Latin sunshine. We enjoyed brunch on a sunny Sunday morning and from the moment we were greeted with Mimosas and a bruschetta platter, I knew this was going to become a regular outing. The set-price brunch menu includes Mimosas, bruschetta, a main course and three drinks. The bruschetta was garlicky and delicious and perfectly accented by the fresh spinach and pickled onions in the centre. For a main, I selected
avocado toast, which featured homemade guacamole and mango salsa sitting atop an expertly toasted chunk of artisan sourdough bread. My daughter opted for the Baked Beet Tortillas, an incredibly flavourful vegan-friendly option filled with beetroot falafel and spicy black beans. And because every meal should end with a sweet treat, we shared a plate of warm churros with a rum caramel dipping sauce. Of course, what really sets this brunch apart is the extensive list of cocktails to choose from – we indulged in a minty Mojito and an icy Strawberry Daiquiri, and I have my eye on a few others to try next time. Whatever the weather outside, brighten up your weekend with a bit of Havana sunshine at Revolución de Cuba.

S
pring is always an exciting time of the year to experiment with new foods and flavour combinations to brighten up even the dreichest day. We tend to crave lighter choices, anticipating the first spring greens and the peppery salad leaves as well as taking advantage of langoustines, cod, lobster, monkfish and mussels all being in their prime. Look out for seasonal roe deer, purple broccoli, beetroot,
chicory, celeriac and cabbages. Make a simple shredded spring slaw by grating leftover veg in any combination to go with meat, fish or game. Cut back on meat, with a more flexitarian approach, using meat or fish in soups or to highlight a salad, rather than as the foundation of a heavy meal. Keep it fresh, local and sustainable for the ultimate feel good factor.
Ingredients 35ml Absolut Vanilia 10ml Tio Pepe 50ml Coconut Milk/Cream blend 15ml Charred Pineapple Syrup 10ml Lactic Acid Solution
The Wee Cheeky is a playful light twist on the classic Pina Colada. The addition of lactic acid solution brings out a nice citrusy note, while the charred pineapple syrup holds true to the original flavour profile.

THE GARDEN DESIGN C O M PA N Y We may still be in the depths of winter but if you are considering a garden project to be ready for this summer, now is the time to start planning it.
words by Kirsty McLean
D
on’t underestimate the importance of taking time to work through the design and planning phases, the success of your project will rely heavily on how meticulously you have thought through the detail. One of the questions that should drive the complexity of your design is whether you will be building it yourself, or you will contract the services of a professional landscaper. If you are doing this yourself, there are a few things to consider: 1. Ensure the design reflects your skills set and physical ability to ensure that your health and safety are not put at risk and this includes considering the weight of the materials you intend to use and how they will be managed. 2. Before you commence works, ensure you have checked with your local authorities that the content of your design does not require planning or building control permissions. If you reside within a Conservation area you must check-in with your local authority.
ADVERTISEMENTS | 63
3. Make sure you know where utilities run through your garden.
5. Try to re-use as much material onsite as you can. 6. Both during your build and after, consider drainage and how water is to be managed. If you are undertaking your project with the services of a professional landscaper, ensure they have all the correct insurances and that you have carried out due diligence on their previous performance through references. Make it your business to ensure that you are contracting a company who can demonstrate that they adopt safe working practices and equip their workforce appropriately. Considering a garden project this year and looking for support? The Garden Design Company Scotland Ltd., under the direction of Kirsty McLean, award winning garden designer and writer will guide you through the process. The Garden Design Company has over twenty years Design & Build experience with an extensive portfolio including residential and commercial gardens. The process is simple and modular, making it easy to access what you need and within your budgetary consideration. In support of the various stages of design, 3D sketches and photorealistic visuals are offered to provide the client with visual confirmation of how the detail and finished garden will look. This ensures that everyone involved in the project, communally understands and buys into the agreed vision thus reducing the possibility for misunderstandings. So whether you are looking for general advice or want someone to oversee every aspect from concept to completion, a consultation with The Garden Design Company is the first step toward creating the garden you’ve always wanted. 9 Culter House Road, Milltimber, AberdeenAB13 0EN Tel: 01224 739184 gardendesignscotland.com

t The Law Practice we appreciate that, at such a difficult time, dealing with the legal matters involved can be overwhelming.
Bereaved relatives can have many worries and questions at this time including payment of bills, in particular funeral costs, access to bank accounts and pension payments, and how quickly the administration of the estate can be dealt with to allow dealing with all the assets. Other questions may be around tax matters, which can involve inheritance tax, capital gains tax or completion of tax returns. There may be gifts to beneficiaries within a Will and there can be questions as to the sufficiency of funds to deal with these gifts. Other issues can arise if there is digital estate - are passwords available? Importantly, there can be concerns regarding protection for surviving spouses and / or children. A legal minefield in many ways without the correct knowledge. Having an up to date Will and an informative solicitor can alleviate many of the concerns, but, we are aware, sadly, that more than 50 per cent of the adult population does not have a Will in place. At The Law Practice we would be happy to arrange a chat to answer any questions you may have and help navigate the legal process.

building, to queue in the H1 carpark for their ‘pigs in blankets’ or fish and chips and donate a minimum of £5 to Community Food Initiatives North-East (CFINE). Claire and David from Original also broadcast live from the event. A steady line of customers came out during the 11am to 2pm time slot to support the initiative. All the money raised will go to help disadvantaged individuals and families in the area.

here are times when you need to have a break from winter’s endless march of grey days and grey faces so take yourself off to warmer climes. Our winter sun picks range from a balmy Tenerife to a sizzling hot Goa, via Cape Verde and Florida. Decide on how warm you want it to be and whether you want a bit of culture, history, theme parks, a holistic retreat, a foodie trip, or just to spend a week or two snoozing in the shade. Best for fun > FLORIDA
Best for all-round value > TENERIFE
Florida means fun and sun in equal measure. Though the presence of theme parks - everything from Busch Gardens, LEGOLAND, SeaWorld and Universal Studios in Orlando - mean we often think of Florida as a family destination, there’s plenty to entertain adults who don’t hanker after a set of Mickey Mouse ears.
Tenerife offers the best of all worlds in February and March. It’s a shorter flight than many other sun-drenched options, with plenty to do if you can prise yourself off your sun-lounger and it’s a bit of a bargain at this time of year. Even though it’s the off-season, there’s still plenty to do and far fewer families grabbing the best spots by the pool. Go whale or dolphin watching, try a dune buggy trip or spend the day at a water park or visiting monkeys, scuba dive at night or just unwind to the music and lights at the fountain in Playa de las Americas. Average February temperature 22OC.
Try Miami, which combines some interesting art deco architecture, ruinously expensive real estate, excellent upmarket shopping at Bal Harbour and a Hispanic heritage that means some amazing Cuban-inspired cuisine in Little Havana. Head to Key West and pretend to be Hemingway with a bit of marlin fishing, get your heart pumping with a choice of adrenaline sports, or take an airboat tour of the everglades. Flights are around nine to ten hours, but US immigration queues can seem almost as long again. Average February temperature 23OC.

Best for wellbeing > GOA Best for Instagram envy > CAPE VERDE 350 miles off the coast of Senegal and only inhabited since the 15th century, the ten islands that make up this island nation had an early history steeped in slavery, piracy and Portuguese colonialism. These days, Cape Verde is a tourism hotspot and one of the most democratic and developed African nations, despite a lack of natural resources. What Cape Verde does have an abundance of, however, is amazing beaches, great hotels and warm sunshine. You’ll also find some interesting historical sites, old churches, water sports, sport fishing, beach horse riding and conservation projects such as the turtle hatchery. Perfect for selfies. Average February temperature 24OC.
Go for Goa if you’re in need of a relaxing recharge. You’ll find a great selection of yoga and holistic wellbeing breaks, where you can do everything from the downward dog to detoxing or discovering yourself. You’ll probably appreciate it all the more after at least 12 hours on a flight from London. Like Cape Verde, Goa has a historic legacy from its days as one of Portugal’s outposts of empire, so you’ll find a pleasing cultural fusion. Take a tour of an organic spice farm, paddle the quiet backwaters in a kayak, learn to cook with a local or just spend all your time de-stressing in a spa, or at an immersive yoga course. Goa’s the ideal choice for re-awakening all your senses. It’s a foodie paradise, with a rich mix of fresh seafood, aromatic curries, great veggie and vegan dishes and a surprisingly inexpensive bill at the end. Average February temperature 34OC.

berdeen offers a wide variety of venues that encourage children to explore the world around them in the way they learn best by touching and feeling and trying out new things for themselves.
It is true that not everyone would pick an art gallery as an obvious destination for a group of young children, but the newly refurbished Aberdeen Art Gallery on Schoolhill has plenty to offer even the smallest budding artist. The facility itself is breath-taking and immediately imparts that this city cares a great deal about art and culture, and the attention to detail as you make your way through the exhibits proves that even the youngest patrons have been considered. There are interactive touch displays scattered throughout, Art Explorer activity cards, exhibits of the works of school-aged children and even a calendar of special events for families that run throughout the year. Just around the corner in its new location on George Street is the Aberdeen Science Centre, formerly known as Satrosphere. Here, the focus is on young, inquisitive minds and on helping them discover science and its practical applications in all aspects of modern life. With a collection of fully interactive learning experiences throughout the facility, kids can learn about everything from space gravity to sheep poo. Aberdeen Science Centre hosts regular workshops relating to their featured themes, like their current showcase on The Science of Magic. Aberdeen Maritime Museum is another that is sure to capture the imagination of children growing up in a city so closely linked to the North Sea. Located on Shiprow, the exhibits are visually captivating to the young just as they are, but add to that the interactive displays and multi-media presentations and you are likely to find a full day’s entertainment here. There are many others to choose from as well. The University of Aberdeen Zoology Museum offers a comprehensive look at creatures great and small, the Tolbooth Museum gives us a glimpse into the history of incarceration and crime in Aberdeen, and The Gordon Highlanders Museum invites you to explore the 200-year history of one of the most famous regiments in the British Army. Children are naturally curious about the world around them – fortunately, Aberdeen’s museums have found a way to tap in to that curiosity to ensure the city produces its own great thinkers of the future.

Studies show that art helps patients with their physical, mental and emotional recovery
Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust

I
f you’ve ever visited any of our local NHS hospitals, you’ll have noticed that the walls in the public spaces and corridors feature an enormous selection of paintings and screen prints. Art transforms the wellbeing of those who work in hospitals as well as those who are being cared for and their visitors. It’s the work of Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust, but there’s a lot more to the charity than just displaying pictures, as GHAT Director, Sally Thomson explains…
The Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust initially started as a project promoted by a local surgeon, Norman Matheson in 1985. He had seen paintings on display in a Scandinavian hospital and thought it would improve the ‘feel’ of our own hospital in North-east Scotland, so worked with lecturers at Gray’s School of Art and local arts organisations to pilot an art project in the hospital. Three years later, this was formalised as a charitable body called Aberdeen Hospitals Art Project, which became Grampian Hospitals Art Trust in 1990. In the beginning, GHAT centred on brining art to those in hospital. As the organisation has grown, we have developed a full programme of creativity. This now extends into clinical spaces and encourages people away from their beds to engage with and create art. We champion the concept that hospitals can be cultural spaces to access art, over and above any clinical need and therefore demystifying the building - placing it within the community. GHAT concentrates on what matters to people rather than what is the matter with them. ArtRoom is our patient-centred arts project, with five venues across NHS Grampian. The sessions are entirely organic, each participant decides whether to paint or draw, sculpt or work with clay. The trained artists advise and answer questions,
supporting each person to be responsible for developing and producing their own work. The idea is to give choice back to the participant, taking the focus off their medical condition and treating participants as people, not patients. Studies show that art helps patients with their physical, mental and emotional recovery on so many levels. Art is for everyone. It reduces stress and loneliness and provides opportunities for self-expression. At a time when patients may be fearful and uncertain about their health or undergoing medical interventions, the personal attention and knowledge given by professional practitioners of the arts can be especially beneficial. Some of the research may seem surprising, but we know that engaging in art in a hospital setting improves patient-carer communication, eases anxiety and depression, reduces reported pain levels and even shortens the length of stay. We have over 4000 artworks in the GHAT collection at present and plan to fundraise by offering some duplicate works or those which can no longer be displayed for sale. We also have some exciting projects taking place this year, including Shared Collective History which will preserve and celebrate artistic
heritage that connects people and place in the North-east of Scotland and Amplify, which seeks to help everyone engage more with the collection. At Inverurie Community Hospital, we are working with Paul Thompson and the local community on creating a new garden, as well as hosting some exciting exhibitions in the Suttie Arts Space. At GHAT, we’re keen for more individuals and business to help support the charity’s creative programme. Businesses can take part in our Art in Work Scheme, creating their own art with help from an established artist, while benefitting GHAT. As well as donations via justgiving. com/ghat, people can become Friends of GHAT, take a tour or come along to a Friends’ Fundraiser. There’s lots of information on the GHAT Website at ghat-art.org.uk/ fundraising/

H
ow do you fancy winning an overnight stay and dinner for two at one of the UK’s coolest new hotels? Thought so. Our winner and their guest will have stay at Dundee’s new Hotel Indigo, which offers the perfect combination of luxury and style in a vibrant city undergoing a cultural renaissance. That’s why Lonely Planet chose the city as one of their top ten places to visit in Europe. The hotel is housed in the landmark Baxter Brothers’ Jute Mill in the heart of the city, making it the perfect base for exploring Dundee’s many museums and galleries, or strolling by the river as well as indulging in a little shopping. As well as providing an indulgent escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, Hotel Indigo Dundee is just a short hop from the new V&A museum, as well as the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre and the underrated McManus Gallery, home to more 400
million years of history. If you’re feeling nautical, then the polar exploration ship RRS Discovery is also close by. Given the comfort and industrial heritage vibe of Hotel Indigo’s rooms, our winner could be forgiven for staying in – at least till dinner time - as a meal at the hotel’s 2AA Rosette restaurant, the Daisy Tasker, draws on both the area’s reputation for outstanding local produce and its sea-faring heritage, with everything from haggis to a South Indian inspired fish curry on the menu. The competition winner and a guest will be able to enjoy one night spent in one of the hotel’s stunning guestrooms as well as dinner at the 2AA Rosette-awarded restaurant Daisy Tasker. 94 | THE LAST WORD
words by Peter Mitchell
Lighting up life these days in Aberdeen, where there has been more talk of doom and gloom than boom, is the city’s born-again art gallery, an attraction in the city since 1885.
FOCUS ON PROVIDING THE BEST OF SERVICE
S
preading the joy of its resounding success since reopening last November is Margaret Sweetnam, its marketing and communications manager, who has survived the fraught build-up to the reopening. Bear in mind her brief also includes promoting the city’s Maritime Museum, the Tolbooth Museum, the iconic Provost Skene’s House which itself is having a major makeover, and the Aberdeen Treasure Hub museum centre in Northfield. We meet for coffee and a chat in the gallery’s ground-floor café before she whisks me up in the new lift to see further treasures on Level One. The exciting new top level, including the BP Galleries, awaits my next visit. ‘We have been bowled over by the response from the public,’ says Margaret, whose five-year course in fine art at Edinburgh University and the city’s college of art, earned her an MA with honours in 1991. ‘It’s hard to believe we have already had 80,000 visitors in such a short space of time and that many have to come back because there is so much to take in,’ she adds. ‘The sense of civic pride in the place is palpable.’ The £34.6million project has led to a significant increase in the amount of display space for the permanent collections, up to 18
now from 11 four years ago. In addition, the number of items on display has increased threefold in the same time frame to 1,080. For most people, fine art was the principal feature of the art gallery but that has all changed now, says Margaret, who hails from Musselburgh and has settled very happily in Stonehaven with her Irish husband, Richard, and their three sons. Much more decorative art is now on display, including textiles, jewellery, ceramics and glass, she adds. The Italianate central court has reverted to its original intention of displaying sculpture in all its forms, notably three of the creations of the fabled Dame Barbara Hepworth. However, joy is not totally unconfined in the portals of Aberdeen Art Gallery. There is the ongoing issue of finding £5million to pay off the last of the bill for this massive undertaking. Says Margaret, ‘This is where we are appealing to our most welcome visitors, for whom entry is free, to find ways of contributing, whether it is by becoming a founder patron, adopting an art work or buying a chair in the Cowdray Hall where concerts are now routinely packed out. Making a cash box donation is also most welcome.’ So there you have it, all good things come at a price. Perhaps the gallery should adopt the slogan: We have the Monet, let’s see your money!
