Where there’s a Will
Make 2025 the year you sort your affairs out. We’re often reluctant to think too far ahead but, sadly, death comes to us all. It’s vitally important that your “life admin” is up-to-date and a Will is in place.
Why have a Will? It’s the only way of ensuring that the people you choose benefit from your estate. It can also reduce the costs and time required to deal with your estate.
If you don’t have a will? Then the default Scots law rules of intestacy will apply. Who inherits depends on the family you leave behind. Generally, any spouse/civil
partner will rank first and any children thereafter. The amount each inherits depends on the value and make up of your estate. If you have no spouse/civil partner or children, then parents, siblings and wider family join the mix. If there’s no surviving family, your assets pass to the Crown.
So, you have a Will? Great. How often should you be updating it?
Essentially whenever your wishes or circumstances change. If you’ve recently married, divorced, had a child, or even if you’ve won the lottery, it’s important these changes are reflected in your Will. Smaller changes don’t always require a new Will,
instead we can prepare something called a Codicil.
It might seem easier to put this to the bottom of your “to do” pile but at Balfour + Manson our friendly team make setting up your Will stress-free. So, get in touch today.
Balfour+Manson can also help with
• Residential property sales and estate agency
• Family Law

FROM THE EDITOR
Hello again, Happy New Year to you all.
We’re a bit surprised to discover that’s us at the quarter mark for this century already. Where does the time go?
January and February can often be our quietest months as we recover from the excesses of the festive season and endure that remarkably long stretch till January’s pay day finally comes round. We make all sorts of promises to ourselves about the people we’re going to be this year– so much thinner, fitter or busier, richer, better dressed, so much better at taking care of our resources and mental wellbeing. On average, we last two weeks before we’ve come across a stash of post-Christmas treats lurking at the back of a cupboard, or bought 16 jumpers we won’t wear in the sales.
This year, why not take it slower rather than rushing to change everything. Take baby steps. Make one change at a time. Realise that you can’t be a new person overnight. Resolve to make the most of the opportunities that living here offers. Make time to enjoy yourself and work out what matters to you. Support local retailers, seek out local experiences, eat at independent restaurants and cafes, visit local attractions, walk in the parks or head out to the countryside, take a day trip to some of the Shire towns, dress up, glam up and try something new.
Make 2025 the year you actually enjoy your life.
Love

Scent-sational!
There’s a trio of beauty products every woman hopes to find in her lifetime. The lipstick that brings her skin to life, the fail proof mascara and her signature scent…
One of the best ways to approach finding your signature scent is to narrow down your options to one or two perfume families.
Floral: These perfumes are dominated by floral notes like rose, jasmine, and lily. They are often fresh and feminine, which means they, or their close relatives the fruity/foodie Gourmands, are often the first type of perfume we experiment with as teenagers. Think back to cloying Impulse Body Sprays and fruity concoctions from the Body Shop.
Oriental: Known for their warm, spicy, and exotic scents, oriental perfumes often include notes like vanilla, cinnamon, and amber. They can be quite rich, dark, complex and sensual.
Woody: Woody perfumes feature earthy and forest-like notes such as sandalwood, cedar, and vetiver. They are typically warm and comforting, often associated with unisex fragrances or the more complex scents for women.
Fresh: Fresh perfumes are light and airy, with notes like citrus, green leaves, and aquatic scents. They are perfect for spring and summer, giving a clean and invigorating feel.
Chypre: Chypre perfumes are a blend of citrus, floral, and woody notes, often with a hint of moss. They are complex and sophisticated, with a balance of freshness and depth.
Start by thinking about the types of scents you enjoy and what you dislike. Keep in mind that something that smells fabulous on someone else may prove a disappointment when it reacts with your own skin chemistry.
If possible, pop into Boots or one of the fragrance shops in town and try
out a couple of scents. You can use tester strips, but your skin is the only reliable testing ground for a new scent. Don’t make an immediate decision as the initial top notes will wear off, leaving the heart notes and base notes to linger.
For more niche high end brands, TK Maxx is a good option, often throwing up amazing bargains. You could try a specialist like Les Senteurs (lessenteurs.com) in London, who offer an inexpensive sample service. If you’re blind buying without trying a scent first, then check out the reviews on Fragrantica.com which can help steer you towards finding a signature scent you’ll love.
Think about where and when you plan to wear your new scent. A workplace perfume generally has to be less strident that something for a big night out. You also need to consider the effect you want to create. If you’re a Goth, you probably don’t want to smell like a floral disinfectant and might be better with a woody oriental. Similarly, the boardroom is probably not the place to wear a scent that reminds everyone of bubble-gum, nor should your colleagues be aware of your perfume five minutes before your physical arrival.
You might also want to factor in whether the ingredients are from natural sources or man-made equivalents, given that specialist perfume houses tend to use more expensive ingredients compared to the big names whose budget goes on advertising.
The trick is to experiment. Finding a signature scent is a journey with a lot of interesting diversions before you reach your destination. Your signature scent should match your personality, make you feel good and smell wonderful.

In a world of uninspiring identikit SUVs, choosing a classic car can offer an unbeatable combination of style and practicality…
New car models, especially if they are electric, have become expensive in relation to the level of performance and degree of fun they offer the driver. When a new electric Corsa comes in at over £30,00, you can buy a much more interesting and stylish vehicle for half that if you opt for a classic. After all, if you had car posters on your bedroom wall it was probably a shiny red Ferrari or a wedge shaped Lamborghini rather than a mid-range family saloon. Not only are you buying into history and heritage, but classics often hold their value or appreciate financially, if properly cared for.
Many classics offer robust year-round driving, or you could opt for a classic summer car, ideally a convertible that can be used for both commuting and road trips further afield. There’s something magical about British sportscars from the Fifties and Sixties, though these days, there are classics from up till the end of the 20th Century, so you could relive your youth in an 80s hot hatch, a Seventies supercar or a boy racers’ Subaru Impreza. It’s all about style. A Maserati makes your heart sing in a way a Vauxhall Mokka is unlikely to do.
A lot of classics are relatively uncomplicated mechanically and parts are still easy to come by from specialist dealers and restorers. Insurance can be remarkably cheap, especially compared to the steep penalties faced by
younger drivers. Consider as well the future classic. There are often good, low mileage examples of luxury marques that offer remarkable value because they are that bit older. They can be cheap to insure and if your classic is over 25 years old, there’s no road tax to pay. You may need to steer clear of the LEZ, but then city driving doesn’t match the joy of the open road. That said, there are extremely expensive companies that will convert some classic models into electric versions.
Whatever marque you choose, the classic car community is vibrant, welcoming and remarkably inclusive. It really doesn’t matter if you have a vintage Bugatti or a rusting 2CV. Owners often join clubs, attend car shows, and participate in rallies, forming lasting friendships and providing each other with advice and a hand if needed. You can also learn new skills at Grampian Transport Museum’s Heritage workshop or courses around the country.
You can buy from a dealer or attend specialist classic car auctions, but it’s important to do your research first so you buy wisely, understand what makes a good example of the model you’re considering and don’t get carried away in a bidding frenzy.
After all, there’s nothing cooler than a classic.
Chef focus
Meet Matthew Lobban, the Udny Arms’ ubermeister in the kitchen
‘I grew up in Portlethen and left school at 16. I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do, so I followed my brother into hospitality. I had seen how well he was doing in it and how passionate he was about it. I was a fussy eater when I was younger, but I decided to throw myself at it.
The first kitchen I worked in was the Foyer at His Majestys Theatre and have gone on to work in a number of different places including the Marcliffe, the Chester Hotel, Number 1 Bar and Grill and Amuse.
I feel like I’ve now found a home at the Udny Arms where I can fully develop my style of cooking which is very simple. My goal is to cook great produce to the best of my abilities. I really concentrate on how to get the most natural flavour out of everything. I feel like food is there to give pleasure and not guilt!
I’m very happy with the winter menu as I feel it has a lot of variety on there, but would say my favourite would be the duck liver parfait. It’s always the best thing on any menu anywhere and I’m really happy with our recipe!
The best food I’ve ever eaten was at the Cellar in Anstruther. It was a while ago now, and it’s a shame that it has now closed. I remember every course just blowing me away and inspiring me.
If I could invite anyone to eat here, I think David Attenborough be full of amazing stories and I feel he’d appreciate seeing the seals at the beach. Nathan Outlaw would be another person I would invite as I love his food. He seems like a genuinely nice man that would be full of good advice. And Sam Fender, just in the hope that he’d get up and play a few songs!
Like most chefs, I keep up to date on food trends. I think there will be a resurgence in retro recipes that have a bit of a story to them or a funky name, Chefs will be looking at how they can enhance them with new ingredients or techniques so that we can make them appealing. Another trend will be avoiding food waste, so preserving techniques like fermenting and pickling will be popular.
At the Udny Arms Hotel, we take pride in our rich history that goes back to the 19th century. Our family-owned hotel has been fully renovated to a high standard, and offers a modern and cozy stay for all our guests.
Five pension myths –debunked
Pension rules can seem complex, and the details are often changing, which can leave savers feeling bewildered about their retirement plans. Here are some of the myths – and what you need to know.
Myth 1: The state will provide enough for me.
The new state pension pays around £11,500 per year (£221.20 per week), which is unlikely to provide for even a modest standard of living. Depending on your working history, you might not qualify for the full amount. Check your state pension entitlement at gov.uk/checkstatepension
Myth 2: Tax-free cash is always 25% of your pension pot.
The 25% tax-free amount is capped at £268,275 for most people. Some with older company pensions may have a greater amount of protected cash available. A financial adviser can help ensure you don’t lose valuable benefits.
Myth 3: Pensions are the only way to fund retirement.
Retirement income can come from different sources, including cash savings, shares, ISAs, and property.
Myth 4: I am OK because my pension is in a default lifestyle fund.
Default lifestyle funds usually shift your money into lower-risk assets as you approach retirement. These funds may be unsuitable if you plan on income drawdown or semi-retirement.
Myth 5: My pension dies with me.
Under current rules, if you die before age 75, pension benefits can usually be passed on taxfree. However, it was announced in the 2024 Autumn Budget that the value of unused pension funds and death benefits will be included in a person’s estate for IHT purposes from April 2027. This could significantly affect how you wish to structure your retirement income to make sure it’s taken as tax efficiently as possible.
The value of investments, and any income from them, can fall and you may get back less than you invested. This does not constitute tax or legal advice. Tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in the future. Information is provided only as an example and is not a recommendation to pursue a particular strategy.

Adazzling and emotional immersive attraction which brings the works of Vincent Van Gogh spectacularly to life is set to come to Aberdeen. Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience runs from 12 July to 10 August.
The immersive show blends more than 300 of the post-Impressionist icon’s paintings with cutting-edge technology and a specially curated musical soundtrack to tell the story of one of history’s most influential artists, with people able to wander through iconic works - including The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Terrace of a Café at Night - as they came alive around them.
The show attracted five-star reviews during its stay in Glasgow, while visitors to the SEC described the experience as ‘hauntingly emotional’, ‘thought provoking’ and ‘a wonderful day out’. More than five million people across the United States, Canada and South America and selected UK cities have already seen the show. Tickets are available from pandjlive.com

For some, the New Year presents an opportunity to consider major life changes, one of which might be to end an unhappy relationship.
Separation can be an anxious and distressing time, but here are some tips to help you transition as smoothly as possible to a two-household family.
1. Take advice early
It’s advisable to take advice from a specialist family lawyer as soon as possible, ideally before separating, so that you have a clear understanding of your legal rights and obligations.
Don’t make any significant changes to your living or financial arrangements, dispose of any assets or sign any legal documents without first taking legal advice. Think carefully about your family’s long-term needs and interests.
2. Look after your physical and mental health
It could be worthwhile exploring counselling to help work through this difficult time.
3. Prioritise the children
Shield your children from conflict - separation can be especially traumatic and confusing for them.
Tips For A Positive Separation
Your lawyer can signpost available resources to support parents and children.
4. Stay Calm
Good communication is vital for effective coparenting. Don’t badmouth your partner or make negative comments on social media. Avoid sending inflammatory messages, which could be used against you, and consider changing passwords, especially on shared devices.
5. Gather relevant information
Your lawyer will need full information about your financial situation to advise on the fairest solution: gather as much information as you can about your assets and debts, and your income and expenditure. Decisions taken during a separation can have an impact for years to come and should be made following careful consideration with your lawyer and financial adviser.

Turning Japanese
Garden designer Kirsty McLean on taking your inspiration from the Far East…
This corner of Scotland has been hugely influenced by Japanese horticulture and design ever since Thomas Blake Glover sparked Japan’s industrial age with his involvement in a shipping firm which later grew into Mitsubishi. This cultural exchange resulted in the local introduction of many Japanese plants and design influences. Take a visit to Johnston Gardens which is a perfect example of this influence or see the beauty of the Cherry blossom trees on Springfield Road when in full bloom!
Japanese garden design is an ancient cultural form rooted in Zen Buddhism, Shinto and Taoist beliefs. The elements chosen, are taken directly from nature. The plant palette is constrained and does not shout louder than the overall balance of the design. This careful choice and positioning of each element is highly symbolic and encourages slow movement through the garden, often with winding paths and secluded areas for contemplation and reflection. All these are elements that we now know enhance our wellbeing.
Create your own Japanese inspired garden
Elements: take your influences from nature, use stone (patio stone,
rocks, gravel, sand, pebbles). Water, representing life–giving force, renewal, calm and continuity into the hereafter or a dry riverbed using pebbles and a wooden bridge to symbolise the journey to the afterlife. Rocks represent stability. The rocks must be carefully considered with interesting form and detail.
Design: Simplicity, taking the natural landscape into your space and replicating it to scale. Aim for asymmetry, enclosure and balance to create a tranquil harmony. Consider a winding, stepping-stone and gravel path, with zoned seating areas for contemplation and reflection, some of which are secluded, and others, more open for social interaction. The space between features is just as important as the features themselves.
Planting: Most Japanese plantings use a high percentage of conifers and evergreen plants, placing them in such a way as to show off their contrasting textures, architectural form and seasonal interest. Position a Japanese mapleAcer palmatum atropurpureum (use Dissectum, if you have limited space) in a prime sheltered location with slightly acidic, well-drained soil in contrast with evergreen, dwarf Pinus Mugo ‘Mops’ which grows into a ‘ball’ shape. Add a
weeping Cherry blossom tree – Prunus ‘Kiku Shidare Zakura’ that doesn’t grow beyond 2.5m high/wide and can be further restricted if planted into a pot. There is a wonderful variety of dwarf Rhododendron and azaleas to choose from or opt for a slow growing Abies Koreana tree with most incredible form and blue-black cones!
Clump forming Bamboos such as Fargesia or Phyllostachys can be planted as a hedge to screen or divide areas, or as an impact plant on its own. Just make sure it is only clump-forming varieties you use, or you may find it digging up the foundations of your house!
Grass isn’t quite so much a feature of Japanese gardens, but mosses are. There are over 700 species of moss in the UK! Grow in shady, damp conditions on compacted, acidic soil. Why not try to make a Kokedama – the art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball of soil wrapped with string that can be hung or displayed sitting on a stone.
Creating a space that celebrates the natural landscape together with human being’s creativity is Japanese garden design and can create a sense of wellbeing in any size of garden or balcony, so why not give it a go!
Shetland Knitting:
colour and culture
As a jewellery designer, you might think Jacqui Grant’s working life provides more than enough of a creative outlet, but here she explains the how she unwinds with her knitting needles…
‘I was born and raised in Shetland, where we were taught to knit in primary school, but it’s also passed down from generation to generation. It’s more than a pastime or a fashion statement, it was how people passed the long nights and was a major contributor to household income. My dad knitted jumpers on the knitting machine and mum knitted in the jumper yokes and grafted the garments together in the evenings when she had a young family and couldn’t be out at work.
‘Fair Isle lies between the Orkneys and the Shetland Isles. The population is around 60 people and the Island is just three miles long and half as wide. In Aberdonian terms, that’s around the same size as Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter and down to the
river, so it’s pretty isolated. Other than knitting, there are few tourists and most of those come to watch birds.
‘Fair Isle knitting is all about pattern and colour, characterised by bands of geometric motifs repeated round a hat or the yoke of a jumper. It’s often emulated and you can find inauthentic versions made in China or machine knitted in acrylic. Real Fair Isle means a limit of two colours a row and a harmonisation graduation of colours that create a pleasing effect. Often patterns are shared in families and in specific areas of Shetland.
‘I find it soothing because you lose yourself in counting. It’s a bit like swimming lengths and there’s something quite Zen about it. You
need a good memory and the ability to focus too.
‘People sometimes wonder why Fair Isle knitting is so expensive, but that’s a combination of the cost of the materials and the sheer amount of time needed to create a garment. A Fair Isle hat can take ten hours and lace items require even more concentration and time to produce.
‘Shetland Knitting encompasses a number of different styles. There are gossamer cobwebs of Shetland lace, most commonly made into shawls. Traditionally, the shawl had to be fine enough to be pulled through a wedding ring and the work is incredibly intricate
and skilful. These pieces I make for special occasions, generally for family members, usually for the birth of a baby.
‘Each year there’s a Shetland Wool Week which showcases the craft and promotes the heritage and skills involved. Visitors travel from Canada, America and all over the globe to take workshops and classes in different styles of knitting, colour work and lace workshops.
‘Back in September, I showcased my fair isle knits at NEOS as part of a fundraising effort for the Brain Tumour Charity after a relative passed away. I completely sold out of all my stock. Not only did this raise over £2000 for the charity,
but I was really surprised by how many people were interested in the techniques and pieces I produced. So many knitters brought in their own pieces for advice or were interested in trying it for themselves.
‘This year I’m considering doing NEOS again and I’d love to run some workshops in conjunction with local wool shops and perhaps sell some pieces via craft fairs or shops.’

Park life
The David Welch Winter Gardens
At this time of year, the David Welch Winter Gardens in Duthie Park is one of our favourite places to visit in the city. While many of the city’s parks and gardens have all their attractions, the Winter Gardens has the advantage of always being warm and dry, not to mention some fabulous planting and having a great café on the premises.
The Winter Gardens were added to Duthie Park in the early 1900s, but moved to the present 1970s building after extensive storm damage in 1969
destroyed the original building. They were named after David Welch, an eminent horticulturalist who served as the city’s Director of Parks for over two decades and was largely responsible for turning Aberdeen into a city of flowers, from rose beds planted in central reservations, to the swathes of daffodils and crocuses that line embankments marking the return of spring.
These days, when you visit the Winter Gardens, you can following a circuit through the different areas including
the Temperate House, Fernery, Corridor of Perfumes and the outdoor Japanese Garden areas. There are also tranquil koi ponds, scenic bridges, seating areas and spots that are great for reading, contemplation or just people watching.
The Victorian Glass House corridor is planted up with bright seasonal displays of cyclamen over the winter and the Tropical House boasts some rare and exotic specimens. The Winter Gardens is also home to one of the biggest collections of cacti and succulents in the UK, including an
exceptionally rare talking cactus called Spike.
The Winter Gardens is also available for hire for events such as weddings, wedding photography, naming ceremonies and corporate events at very competitive rates. Up to 70 people can be accommodated, but the gardens remain open, so you can expect to be congratulated by other visitors. You can provide your own catering too.
The café is open from 9.30-4pm and from 9.00 at the weekend, serving breakfasts, lunches, snacks, cakes and tray bakes, gluten free options and a children’s menu.
The Winter Gardens are open every day of the year except December 25-6 and January 1-2. It’s open from 10.30 – 4pm in January and February and then until 5pm from March till October. There’s no entry charge, but there are donation boxes dotted around in the undergrowth.

Lightbulb moments Lightbulb moments
New lighting can instantly update a room, changing the ambience and providing focal points, without breaking the bank. It’s a mood boost that’s particularly welcome at this time of year when we tend to have our lights on all day long.
Vintage, industrial and mid-century Scandinavian originals remain popular,
but may require rewiring to current standards. Minimalism makes sense for overhead lighting, particularly if you have high ceilings and aren’t terribly keen on dusting. Quirky, colourful table lamps and accent lighting can lift your mood at the flick of a switch. Who doesn’t feel a little happier when they own a pink mirror ball mushroom or a cute frog nightlight?
A perfect BRAT
A visit to Bratislava should be on your travel radar right now…
Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. Budget flights from Edinburgh take just under three hours and the city offers a great selection of well-priced hotels and apartments to suit all tastes. The Baroque architecture and narrow cobbled streets of the Old Town contrast with a vibrant café and bar culture, so it’s the perfect choice for a winter or spring weekend away.
Traditional Slovakian dishes tend towards the brown and beige, stodgier, rib-sticking comfort food style, with noodles made of potatoes, pork and little dumplings on the menu. Bryndzove Pirohy are tiny sheep cheese dumplings, often served with pork crackling and sour cream. Pastiersky halusky consists of potato noodles with sour cabbage and ribs. Kapustnica is a cabbage, sauerkraut and sausage soup that is rarely conducive to a romantic evening. Koliba Kamzik is a popular restaurant choice if you want to sample the traditional cuisine, though Bratislava also boasts everything from seafood to pizza places, Peruvian restaurants and cat cafes like MacKafe Club. The Central Market Mileticova offers a bewildering selection of street food and local delicacies.
In Bratislava, they take their food heritage seriously, even forming a guild of Goose Roasters to safeguard the tradition of roasted geese in Slovenský Grob, where a select few places hold the designation. Where Bratislava excels, however, is in brew pubs and cafes. There are hundreds of local craft beers to sample and some decent local wines worth trying too.
Dunaj Brewery sits on the banks of the Danube and you can explore the entire production process before trying it for yourself. Fabrika is a great choice if you’re looking for a beer and a burger, or you could take a more spiritual approach with a visit to the Monastery Brewery, Klastorny Pivovar. If you’re thirsty for more knowledge of Slovak beers, then you can take a Craft Beer Tour, or hop on a beer bike for a tour of the Old Town.
Take a tram to Stara Rača, on the outskirts of Bratislava, home of the Chvoskek Winery which offers tastings and a wine shop. Rača is renowned for its red wines from the Blaufrankisch (Lemberger) grapes, also known as Frankovka. The local wines are said to have made the Empress Maria Theresa forget the headaches and troubles of
the Old Town, with quaint cobbled streets and photogenic backdrops. St. Martin’s Cathedral is a Gothic fantasy, or you could head to the powder-blue Art Nouveau church of Modi Kostol. The opening times vary, so it’s worth checking in advance.
The austere whitewashed walls of Bratislava Castle are worth the climb to the top of the hill for the views over the city and a relaxing stroll in the gardens. The UFO Tower has an observation deck that lets you see for 100km and an upscale restaurant that makes a great spot for dinner, or you could explore the galleries at the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum. For a more immersive experience, try Multium, which is a gallery of mirrors, space and optical illusions. It’s probably best to visit before
If you’re feeling particularly cultural, then the Slovak National Theatre and Opera House are worth visiting.
Outwith the city, the riverside ruins of Devin Castle offer scenic combination of history and great views and wildlife spotting, while the Little Carpathians region has lots of pretty vineyards and villages. Bunker BS-8 is a WWII bunker with some great tours and informative
guides and the forest park and zoo make for a pleasing diversion for a few hours. Bratislava Forest Park also offers the chance to ride in a cable car between Železná studnička and Kamzík or enjoy a romantic sleigh ride with views over winter landscape.
Until the start of March, the local race track in the Dostihová Dráha Park in Petržalka is transformed into Winter Wonderland, a fairy-tale themed
collection of light installations that involves over eight million lights in captivating displays. Talk to trees, dance with penguins, meet a unicorn or a giant crocodile and meet fairy-tale characters and a surprising amount of Smurfs.
When it comes to shopping, there’s a mix of modern shopping centres, galleries and independent boutiques, delicatessens and odd little design and vintage shops that make browsing a delight. Most shops are open till 8pm. Slavica is an essential stop for locally designed pieces. Kompot sells t-shirts packed in jam jars, Ceramel specialises in honey. Popping in to Salvator Pharmacy is like stepping back in time. The pharmacy was founded in the 17th century and still contains period furniture as the staff wander around dispensing remedies. If you prefer a more modern shopping experience, Eurovea
Bratislava has stores selling everything from global designer labels to brands not available in the UK and diamonds to pet supplies and Asian supermarkets.
Go on, book a trip and be a perfect BRAT.

TREAT COMPANY’S BRENDA CARDNO TALKS ABOUT HER PLANS TO HAND OVER THE REINS TO HER DAUGHTER KACEY...
‘Even at school, I wanted to be a beauty therapist, though it took me a long time to realise the dream of having my own business,’ explained Brenda.
‘Unfortunately, the nearest course was in Edinburgh and living away from my parent’s home wasn’t an option, so I trained as a Nursery Nurse instead and I loved that job. When I was 23, just a year older than Kacey is now, Fraserburgh College started to offer a course in Beauty Therapy. As I had no big commitments and still stayed at home with my parents, I took the plunge and left my nursery job and became a student. I absolutely loved the course, but must admit that some of the theory felt like heavy going at the time. I completed the course and got a room in a hairdressers, then but another curve ball came and I was offered a job working with the children
at Westfield school. This meant I was juggling two jobs for a number of years but eventually I let the beauty therapy side go as felt settled and loved the time off that working at a school gave me.
‘The next chapter came when I met my husband Scott, and we got married. We have two wonderful children, Kyuss who is 23 and Kacey who’s 22. We also have a gorgeous cockapoo called Kadi. I guess I like names that begin with K! I had the children when I was in my thirties and was fortunate enough to be able to stay at home for most of their time at Primary school. In my forties, I decided it was time to return to work and decided to resume my beauty therapy career, so Treat Company (Scotland) Ltd. was born.
‘I decided to call the business Treat Company as I wanted it to be a place where clients felt well-treated and pampered and because it meant I could expand the business into other areas if I wanted to. I wanted the business to have a welcoming feel, naturally, and of course it’s about offering the most advanced and effective beauty treatments and recognising that everyone deserves to feel a bit special. Most of our clients are mums and wives and that means they often put themselves after everyone else in the house.
‘We’ve had a number of amazing therapists that have worked in Treat Company and we always miss them when they progress to set up their own beauty business. My daughter Kacey is now a fully qualified Beauty Therapist. She works here alongside Lynne, so I’m gradually going to take a few steps back and do fewer hours and head towards retiring. I’m 56 so think I’ll wean myself slowly as still love
doing treatments and especially chatting with the clients and catching up on their lives.
‘Kacey has been at Treat Company for three years now. She has added a good few more exclusive treatments to Treat Company’s list. She’s always researching trends and the latest treatments. She introduced our popular and amazingly effective Diode Laser Hair Removal, the Plasma Pen and just recently our Microblading and ombré brows and Lip blush treatments.
‘I’m so fortunate to have the set up I have and so lucky that Kacey can take over as I step back a little. She’s an excellent beauty therapist. I’m looking forward to spending more time with Scott, though I admit that even when I fully retire, I’ll probably nip through and chat to clients.’
