Minor Surgery Aberdeen WHY WAIT FOR MINOR SURGERY? Many skin lesions (i.e moles, cysts and lipomas) and other procedures such as vasectomy or carpal tunnel release can be safely performed under local anaesthetic as an office based treatment. Despite this many patients put up with their problems and wait for treatment to be undertaken in hospital. This can also prove to be expensive if you are paying for the treatment yourself.
B - Best value All of our procedures are performed by consultants working to the highest standards but as an independent clinic we are able to offer our service at extremely competitive rates, making the procedures affordable whether you are insured or not.
At the Aberdeen Clinic we have developed a specialist minor surgical service in our purpose built facility which allows patients to benefit from our efficient service with no waiting time.
E - Effective care All our surgeons are specialists with links to Plastic surgery and dermatology and will ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment.
WHAT DOES THE ABERDEEN CLINIC OFFER?
S - Safe Treatment Our purpose built facility has all the safety requirements you expect of a clinical facility and our doctors and nurses all participate in our audit and governance framework.
There is no such thing as minor surgery if you are having the procedure done! As such, at the Aberdeen Clinic, we take the same care and attention to detail with our minor surgery as we do with all of our other procedures and clinics.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MINOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES?
Accordingly our patients can book an appointment to suit themselves and benefit from an efficient walk-in- walkout service, and leave feeling confident that they have received the BEST treatment available for their condition.
T - Treatment when you want it. We have no waiting time - so why put off your procedure? For more information or to book an appointment call: 0333 0143 488 or visit: theaberdeenclinic.co.uk.

FROM THE
EDITOR J
une and July ought to mean floaty dresses and factor 50, sun-kissed skin and catching the drips from your ice cream as it starts to slide down the cone. It should be a time of lazy self-indulgence, barbecues and catching up with friends, pottering in the garden, taking a stroll in the countryside, heading for a music festival, going out for a meal and just kicking back with a cold beer or a glass of bubbly. It’s about celebrating the lighter nights and the warmer weather, so we’ve gathered everything you need to make the most of the next couple of months. We’re full of ideas on where to go and what to wear, exciting events, home decorating ideas, shopping opportunities, places to eat, stay and play. And if it rains? Don’t let that stop you extracting every ounce of joy. Promise yourself to step out of your life every now and again and just take some time out for yourself, whether you do so alone or with friends or family. Allow your routines to slip, try something new. It’s summer. We say carpe diem! Seize all that summer has to offer, especially if the sun comes out.

Win a brighter smile with andrew scott dental care
M
any of us aren’t as confident about our smiles as we might be, but the dedicated team at Andrew Scott Dental Care will be bringing a smile to one lucky reader’s face with a custom tooth whitening treatment worth £350. We all know that drinking tea, coffee, or red wine can discolour your teeth. Restoring the whiteness can really boost your confidence and make you feel good about your smile. After a consultation to ensure our winner is in good dental health and suitable for treatment, Andrew or Michelle will take bite impressions. This is used to create a custom tray which fits the teeth precisely, so that just the right amount of lightening gel is used in each daily home treatment. Most people see a difference in just a few days, with a typical treatment taking a couple of weeks. Whitening isn’t suitable for those with crowns, bridges or veneers as the artificial teeth retain their darker shade, while the
natural teeth become lighter. The treatment is not suitable for those under 18. As with any treatment involving the teeth and gums, whitening treatments should only be undertaken by a qualified dentist to ensure safety and appropriate treatment and is non-transferable. Whitening is just one of the service offered by this friendly, stress-free clinic. As well as preventative and restorative dentistry, Andrew, Michelle, George and Rachel are known for their gentle approach and are leading the way in Smile Design, implantology and cosmetic dentistry, giving their patients something to smile about. ONCE YOGA WAS THE DOMAIN OF ANCIENT GURUS DRESSED IN SAFFRON LOINCLOTHS AND SPORTING WAISTLENGTH BEARDS ON SOME HIPPY ASHRAM IN INDIA, BUT THESE DAYS, IT’S ONE OF THE BEST ALL ROUND FORMS OF EXERCISE, COMBINING MOVEMENT AND MINDFULNESS.
hether you’ve not moved from your office chair in years, can’t recollect what your toes look like, or take part in sports regularly, yoga has something to offer. It’s a great way to gently increase your core strength, flexibility and balance while reducing stress, and it works for people of all ages. You’ll work at your own pace without being pressured. Studies suggest that regular yoga sessions can help reduce blood pressure, alleviate depression and reduce the risk of falls for the elderly. Best of all, there’s no need to wear a loincloth - loose clothing is preferred. There are many different styles of yoga, including Ashtanga, Iyengar and Sivananda as well as the relaxing and soporific Yoga Nidra. You’ll find classes in many of the towns and villages throughout the region,
with classes held in gyms, sports centres, community and town halls. David Lloyd Aberdeen, for example, offers both Hatha and Vinyasa yoga as well as beginners classes. Look for a well-qualified teacher, such as Louisa Craig, who runs classes in Aberdeenshire and teaches during Capo Cottages Yoga retreats too, or try the Yoga Centre in Aberdeen. There are also a number of yoga fusion variants, combining yoga with pilates and dance for an all-round work out, such as Barre Concept. Denise Gracie of Body Grace Newmachar and Emma Duncan of Epic Fitness both offer Barre Concept classes. Whatever you choose, you’ll be taking those first steps towards a healthier lifestyle and a form of exercise that you can practise for years.

At this time of year, we’re all hoping for smooth, blemish free, gently sun-kissed skin, but the drying effects of winter can take time and effort to shift. We’ve picked out some products designed to shortcut the process of sloughing off winter’s despond and help you get your glow back…
BEAUTY | 29
MAGNITONE BAREFACED Cleansing Brush Start with a cleansing brush like the Magnitone Barefaced. This award-winning vibra-sonic brush cleans far more efficiently than cleanser alone. It’s completely waterproof, so you can use it in the shower if your mornings are rushed. The combination of sonic oscillations and pulsed vibrations deep-cleanse, massage and tone your skin at the same time, just like a mini workout, but without the sweat! £70 from magnitone.co.uk or good beauty retailers.
ONE SMOOTH OPERATOR Exfoiliant A great exfoliant helps clear dead skin cells away. Choose something that has a gentle, natural abrasive, like walnut shells or apricot kernels rather than plastic microbeads. Try One Smooth Operator from cult beauty brand Formula 10.0.6, which contains oats, zinc and pumice for a natural glow. You can find it at Boots.com and Topshop.
RESURFIZZ Facial Peel
BRYT’S BOOST SERUM Facial Serum If your skin feels tired and dehydrated, then Bryt’s Boost Serum will nourish the skin with its blend of aloe vera, healing allantoin and rich ‘super antioxidants’ extracted from organic Australian wild-harvested plums Kakadu, Burdekin and Illawarra, which contain up to five times more antioxidant power than blueberries. The serum also contains essential oils and hyaluronic acid. £22 from brytskincare.co.uk and online stockists.
Its all you need to get up and glow
A face peel will bring an instant skin boost. Try a weekly treatment using Resurfizz, from The Hero Project. Step 1 is the Thermo Melt, a self-heating deep cleanse that opens pores, dissolves gunk and readies the skin for the Enzyme Fizz gel which turns into a foam. The natural pomegranate enzymes fizz away, surrounding the skin with oxygen and deeply exfoliating to reveal a naturally resurfaced complexion without the need for harsh acids or exfoliators. Initially it feels a bit strange, but it helps to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone, refine pores, soften lines and wrinkles and helps prevent future pore clogging. £49 from theheroproject.co.uk

For many of us, the joyous anticipation of a week or two lounging on a beach or sipping cocktails by the pool is dampened by the depressing process of trying to find swimwear that fits well, looks good and covers a multitude of sins. If there’s one garment guaranteed to make you self-conscious about not looking like a Victoria’s Secret Angel, it’s the swimsuit.
If you’re tall and find swimsuits are often too short in the body, a tankini or bikini can be more flattering. Look for underwired bra styles for support if you have a larger bust and embellished tops if you could use a boost. Take a friend, use a personal shopper or go to a specialised lingerie or department store if you need a reliable second opinion about what flatters. If you need several bikinis or swimsuits, try and restrict yourself to one or two colours that work well together so you can mix and match pieces without taking up too much packing space. Unless you want strange tan lines, avoid anything with complicated strap work or cut outs until you have a tan. A matching sarong or an elegant beach cover up can boost your confidence and make you look more polished. Buy a trashy book or two, a great straw hat, factor 50, comfortable but stylish sandals, espadrilles or flip flops, a pair of flattering sunglasses and you’re beach ready!
Left image: © Debenhams, Right image: © Matalan Left image: © Debenhams, Right image: © Matalan
Start by selecting a variety of styles and colours, because it’s often surprising how swimwear changes between the hanger and the changing room. Never buy without trying it on and checking the fit from both front, back and sides. Try sitting down, stretching your arms over your head and bending over to pick something up off the floor. If it feels uncomfortable, put it back!

GOOD NEWS, CHAPS!
T
his summer you can be fashionable without making much effort. Utility is big right now, which means you can opt for darker colours, manly shapes, tough and practical fabrics. The palette is blues, browns, neutrals, greys and khaki in cotton, denim and leather. Take Guy Martin, Ryan Reynolds and Steve McQueen as your style inspiration and you won’t go far wrong. Start with a great pair of jeans, like classic Levi’s in a scuffed up finish and a straight or slim fit leg, a rugged desert boot, chukka or a pair of Doc Martens, add a t-shirt or checked shirt and a casual jacket and you’ve mastered this summer’s main masculine fashion trend. What could be easier?

MEET CAFÉ BOHÈME’S JOHN PATILLO, WHO BRINGS HIS SCOTTISH ROOTS TO TRADITIONAL FRENCH CUISINE… John found his way into a kitchen at 16 and hasn’t looked back since. ‘I had left school and was looking for a trade apprenticeship, thinking I’d be a mechanic, but I landed a position as a commis chef at the Silver Darling and discovered a passion for cooking and learning more about food. I was there for seven years before working at The Olive Tree, Stonehaven’s Tolbooth and Les Amis, before coming to Café Bohème fourteen years ago. ‘I’ve always worked in restaurants that used a lot of seafood. That’s where my passion lies and Scotland’s waters offer some of the best fish and seafood in the world. I love creating and developing new dishes and growing Café Bohème’s own veg, fruit and herbs. I find a lot of inspiration in books, other restaurants and TV programmes. ‘I was brought up on roast dinners and home-made ice cream and even now I’d opt for shellfish, game and smoked bacon if I was restricted to three choices. ‘My style of cooking has definitely changed as I gained experience over the years. I was very daring and experimental when I started out, but my approach now is more mature. I love classic French recipes made with modern techniques, home-grown or local ingredients and new equipment.’
JOHN’S
COQ AU VIN This is a traditional, hearty French casserole. Serve it with creamy mashed potatoes and warm chunks of crusty bread for an easy, but very satisfying, weekend dinner for four.
INGREDIENTS (Serves 4) 4 free range chicken legs 4 thick slices of pancetta 2 carrots, roughly diced 2 sticks of celery, roughly diced 6 banana shallots, quartered 500ml chicken stock 1 bottle of burgundy reduced to 300ml
100ml port Few handfuls of chestnut mushrooms, quartered if large 8 garlic cloves, peeled & sliced or crushed Rosemary Thyme
METHOD
Gently fry for around five minutes, stirring constantly to prevent sticking. Deglaze the pan with the red wine and port.
Preheat the oven to 180oC, or 170oC for a fan oven. Use a large, lidded casserole pot that will work on both the hob and in the oven. Seal the chicken legs in the pot and remove them from the pot. Add the pancetta to the pot and fry gently until the fat is rendered, then add the prepared garlic, shallots, carrots and celery.
Add the rosemary, thyme, mushrooms and chicken stock, bring to the boil and simmer until the volume is reduced by a third. Add chicken legs back into the casserole pot, place a lid on the pot and put in oven at 180oC for 1 hour. Season to taste before serving.

This corner of the world is blessed with some brilliant Indian restaurants. Trend orders some lager and discovers what’s on the menu at three of the North-east’s best regarded… Jewel in the Crown
The Palak Murgh, generous chunks of chicken breast in a medium spiced spinach sauce proved a new favourite, while the tomato spiced khumbi mushrooms were set off to perfection by a side dish of unctuous tarka dhal. The mushroom pilau came beautifully topped with slivers of almonds and the well-filled peshwari naan ranks with any in the city. We never made it to dessert and were offered a doggie bag to take home. We settled for juicy orange slices, after dinner mints and an incredibly moreish little digestive of fenugreek flavoured sugar strands. I think that we’ll also be joining the ranks of the regulars at the Jewel in the Crown! Crown Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6HP thejewelaberdeen.com

For early on a Tuesday night, the Jewel proved surprisingly busy, with just one table free. Many of the clientele were regulars and given the attentive, but never intrusive service and excellent food, it’s understandable why the basement restaurant has so many fans. We opted for a comforting Aloo Tikki - delicious little mashed potato cakes encased in a crispy batter and moistened with a soft cheese and the almost obligatory chicken pakora made from strips of succulent chicken breast, accompanied by a stack of poppadoms and a selection of accompaniments.

Echt Tandoori
India on the Green
The Echt Tandoori is clearly a very popular place, as it was bustling on a school night in May. The smart dining room is nicely divided up with booths and varying size of table, and there is a separate bar and takeaway area attached. Meals arrive on a hostess trolley which fairly builds up the anticipation as other folks’ choices waft past, served by friendly staff. We started with a sheek kebab and an aubergine aloo puri, followed by the Mumtaz Shahi Lamb and the Somundori Rupchanda, (seabass), with tarka dhal and a vegetable naan. The puris were a revelation, lovely light bread pockets with a variety of fillings. Every dish was beautifully presented, even the coffee is served on its own little burner with an After Curry mint - you certainly get a wow factor at the Echt Tandoori.
India on the Green opened in 2003, although Storm Frank caused devastation, with the popular restaurant reopening in 2016. The interior is fresh and clean with white linen and sparkling cutlery, and a view of a lovely courtyard and the hills beyond. The menu fizzes with flavour combinations and fresh ingredients, so deciding on dishes is challenging! We had the sesame lamb kebab and the tiger grilled crevettes for starters, and the Monk Lal Qilla and a veggie South Indian Garlic Chilli Masala with tarka dhal and sag paneer. Tiny cups of langoustine bisque and chicken dhosa arrived as an amuse bouche and every dish had a distinct and mouth-watering sauce. The fish was cooked beautifully and the vegetables proved crunchy and delicious. With multi-award winning chef Raj Abdul Hamid at the helm, this place is worth the journey.

cotland has some of the best berries in the world and we love it when the first of the crops come in. It’s always fun to pick your own fruit, then come home and gobble them up. Get the kids involved in making crepes, then filling them with berries and ice-cream. Berries are perfect for breakfast too, perhaps with skyr or a lemon yoghurt and a sprinkle of muesli or granola on top.
For something more adult, try raspberries, sharp loganberries or tayberries with chewy meringue, a dollop of cream and a drizzle of a raspberry liqueur like Chambord. Great for informal summer eating with friends. Or create a light and elegant dessert by filling an expresso cup with lime puree, strawberries, sugar and a hint of vanilla, then topping with whisked egg white and a dusting of icing sugar to create a cappuccino look.

ho knew that one of Scotland’s finest pizzas was right under your nose here on Aberdeen’s Back Wynd. The eclectic pizzeria is situated on the ground floor of Nick’s former Cook School. The oil and gas down downturn has provided unexpected dividends with Nick forced to re-purpose his former Cook School, resulting in one of the most exciting dining spaces in Aberdeen. Nairn has created an informal, warm and welcoming space that is clearly the result of an independent operator with not a trace of the corporate blandness of the average chain restaurant. Everything benefits from Nick’s personal touch - not only has he been found clearing tables before now, he even sanded down and polished some of the vintage furniture. The pizza itself is (as you’d expect) simply stellar. Nairn has eschewed the current trend for the thick crusted, soggy middle Napoli style pizza. He and Pizza Chef Paul spent a year developing a thin, crispy Roma style base which is so crispy it can be eaten by hand (no soggy toppings sliding off here). Pizza has become an obsession for both Chefs with a trip to Rome planned in the summer. The toppings feature the finest ingredients available, Scottish venison salami, flour from Shipton Mill, Calabrian n’duja, home made pesto and a tomato sauce which is slowly simmered for 6 hours, being some of the highlights. Nick is immensely proud of what his talented and hardworking team have created. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, the menu is short and to the point as is the wine list, with each bottle personally selected by Nick. Having listened to customer feedback, the pizzeria is now open 7 days a week 12 noon - 10pm. Nick is onsite every week to ensure that the pizzeria continues to deliver at the highest level. However the proof is in the eating, get yourself along to Back Wynd to enjoy a slice of perfection.

he very recently departed garden and landscape designer John Brookes O.B.E. was one of the most influential garden designers of the past 50 years. He created the concept of the garden being an outside ‘room’, writing a book on the subject entitled, “Room Outside” which became a staple of the library of anybody interested in designing a garden space, and led the way to an entirely different way of thinking. He believed that not only should a garden be an outside room, but that partition was a very powerful design element, creating ‘rooms’ within the overall garden ‘room’. Brookes was influenced by a number of people but Garret Eckbo’s philosophy clearly had an effect on this subject.
According to Brookes, Eckbo felt that a garden was like a ‘box without a roof’, and he saw the elements of his layout as individual units that allowed him to organise the space three-dimensionally, very much as we would furnish a room. Now, this is something that we naturally employ when designing an outdoor space. Division, partition or screening used imaginatively can be used to create intrigue, bring focus or alter perspective. Create a visual rhythm, vertical interest or simply screen unwanted views by shifting your focus elsewhere. Some of the materials that can be used to do this are wood, metal, synthetics, stone, living plants and
To start with, understand the natural divisions within your garden by working out where you are likely to sit. If you’re lucky there may be several areas to chase the sun, and consider any other outdoor activities you may wish to pursue as well as practical elements such as where are you going to dry your clothes, store the bins etc. Find
out how the wind moves through the garden and where you need to create shelter. Look at where your focal points are from various perspectives. Note any privacy issues or unwanted views beyond the garden and where shade is likely to fall if you do introduce vertical structures or planting and at what height. These factors will tell you where you need to and should introduce screening, partition, bring emphasis or simply break up the journey along a path by using an arch or series of pergolas. By understanding how you use the space and connecting these spaces, then introducing shelter, partition and division, you can create flow, interest and focus and make better use of your space.

even water. Think about walling, trellis, decorative fencing, pergolas, arbours, or a summer house. Cordiner’s have a great selection and the staff are always willing to help with ideas and practical know-how. arlier this year, Riverside Chiropractic Group officially became the largest natural healthcare clinic in the North-east of Scotland, with the completion of a £370,000 refurbishment and expansion. The team of 18 comprises global pecialists in Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Rehabilitation, Sports Injuries, Massage Therapy, Clinical Psychology and Pain Management and has - most recently -recruited world-class Personal Trainer and Sports Nutritionist, Tim McCune. Tim has worked as a PT and nutritionist for the past six years. As one of only two people in Scotland qualified in Anatomy in Motion, he is using his expertise to support the rehabilitation of clients who have acquired injuries or would like to improve their fitness, strength, endurance or lose weight. ‘My role is to bridge the gap between getting an injury and regaining or embarking upon an active lifestyle. This involves getting patients slowly moving again, devising a nutrition plan and looking at the everyday factors that encompass health. ‘I’m passionate about educating patients about managing stress,
reducing the health implications of technology and the best way to get a good night’s sleep. Each of these factors has a huge impact on wellbeing and they need to align in order to see the best results in rehabilitation, fat loss, and performance. ‘Working within such a large team also means that if I feel a patient would be better suited to one of my colleagues, then I refer them the directly to the best specialist for their needs. That’s what really makes us different.’ Tim offers both one-to-one and small group private training sessions for all ages and fitness levels, working with each individual to achieve their personal health goals; no pressure, no judgment. If you’d like to make some positive lifestyle changes, here are some of Tim’s tips: • Drink up! You should drink 30 40ml of water each day for every kg of body weight • Include a quality probiotic and omega 3 in your daily diet • Eat as much locally sourced, seasonal produce as possible • Ease your technology usage before bed and wake up at the same time each day.

here’s the opportunity to admire vessels of all types in the harbour, and it’s fun to work out which boat is winning in a series of races over the weekend, but there’s also a raft of landside activities to enjoy. It’s the engaging mix of freshly cooked fish and seafood treats, drinks, craft demonstrations and stalls, music and traditional skills that makes the weekend so enjoyable. You can visit some of the vessels and find out more about them from their crews. Last year’s visitors included boats built in Portsoy, replica fishing boats including a Tancook Whaler, cutters, a pocket sloop and some wonderful boat names like the Squid, Waterwitch and the Nutmeg of Consolation. There’s also the chance to look round the boatshed, and you can even sign up on a course to build your own dinghy if the lure of life on the ocean wave overwhelms you. Musically, there’s a treat in store with performances from Dutch band De Kinkels
in the licensed marquee, and the Salmon Bothy will be hosting traditional tunes from the Bothy Folk Club, while young performers take to the stage at Loch Soy. Talking of youngsters, there’s even a programme of children’s activities with workshops and high adrenaline activities on offer throughout the town, as well as a 2k Wee Sporran Fun Run. Adults can also enter the 10k Follow the Herring Race. Shopping opportunities include local makers in the craft tent, as well as an art fair in the Town Hall and plenty of food stalls, many showcasing local producers. The Food Fayre offers a chance to sample the region’s finest food and drink with a programme of demonstrations by talented chefs. It’s worth splashing out on pretty dresses and suits for special occasions, or checking local businesses like Inverurie’s Trendy Treads, lynnlivvy.com and IndiandWill. com for unusual, good quality shoes and clothes. For the most part, kids grow so fast and attract so many mysterious stains, that high street brands will suit most budgets. Here are our summer favourites from babies to teens…

01 LAUREN MCKAY
04 HANNAH SPICER
Lauren has taken her interest in woodlands and their mushrooms, lichen and fungi as the starting point for her collection of jewellery. ‘I studied the structure and colour of these natural forms to create jewellery with unique properties that reflect the organic shapes and feel of these species. I’m hoping to pursue a career within the jewellery industry, so I can build on what I’ve learned at Gray’s.’
Hannah has created a range of tableware based on stones collected from beaches from Aberdeen to Dundee. The collection includes pieces inspired by Stonehaven and Inverbervie. ‘I feel like I have created something natural and organic from each seaside town. They are unique and each hold very different shapes and qualities. After my time at Gray’s, I hope to create new tableware collections inspired by new places.’
02 ELLA PORTER 05 RUTH SAUNDERS Ella is designing a number of practical pieces designed to meet the needs of multi-generational households, where parents, grandparents and children live together. ‘I’ve designed a lamp and a teapot to be used in the kitchen. Some of the most common causes of accidents in the kitchen are due to lack of light, and the spilling of hot water. My work combines traditional making techniques with CAD technology and I’m hoping for a job or internship with a design company after graduating.’
04
Fellow jeweller, Ruth Saunders’ collection comes from the architecture of the many castles in the North-east of Scotland. ‘During my time at Gray’s it has been great to try a variety of processes and methods, from fine hand-made jewellery to work that utilises CAD processes and new technologies. My intention is to become an independent maker. I love being in the workshop and would like to see where my ideas take me.’ 06 AMBER WATSON
05
03 ANNA YOUNIE 06
Ceramicist Anna found inspiration from the landscapes of Orkney, particularly the texture and erosion of its coast and eye-catching standing stone formations. ‘I’m aiming to emulate this weathered, detailed aesthetic in my ceramic pieces. I’ve been encouraged by the lecturers and workshop technicians to explore large scale vessels this year. When I graduate, I’m returning to Orkney where I hope to set up my own small studio and business producing smaller scale pieces for both the locals and the island’s many visitors.’
Amber’s inspirations comes from the idea of luxury London living - bringing an aesthetic of bold shapes, colour and line-work to her designs. ‘My project is a cabinet made from plywood sandwiched either side of a layer of Perspex. I’ve learned a lot about my design process this year and I’m hoping to work somewhere I can still create bold pieces.’

THE LAST WORD When does coming second equal a first-class performance which needs to be celebrated? For Aberdeen Football Club’s long-serving full-back Andy Considine, the answer is the last frantic day of this season’s Ladbroke’s SPFL Premiership in May.
I
t looked like mission impossible in Glasgow for the Dons to get three points against champions-elect Celtic and thus secure second place in the league for the fourth year in a row. Who in their right mind would bet on Aberdeen ending a win-free 14 years of torture in league games at Celtic Park? Were the hosts not about to celebrate a seventh league title in a row in front of nearly 60,000 baying fans? Andy Considine proved to have other ideas, turning up in the penalty area early in the second half to slot home a left-foot shot and give Aberdeen a precious 1-0 lead. ‘A lot of people asked me as a defender what I was doing so far upfield but there I was when the ball came to me, probably by accident, and I decided to give it a whack,’ said Andy when I met the amiable six-footer for a cup of tea at the Banchory Lodge Hotel. ‘The goalie was only able to parry the ball and it sneaked in at the near post. Getting the win after a terrific rearguard action in the second half kept us clear of Rangers who were held to a 5-5 draw away to Hibs. It will certainly be a goal for me to cherish after my playing days are over and I have the shirt and other bits and pieces to remind me.’ It’s Andy’s twenty-ninth goal for Aberdeen, but definitely one of the fans’ favourites. His career with the club started when he was 17 and he’s now 31, but not quite ready to hang his boots up yet. ‘The win will do wonders for us next season,’ said Andy. ‘You really have to win these big games in Glasgow against Celtic and Rangers to gain street cred.’
Alas, one key person missed Andy’s glory day. You see, football runs through the veins of the Considine family and his dad, Doug, has the distinction of being a member of the Aberdeen side which won the Scottish premier division in 1980. Said Andy, ‘Actually, he was flying out from Glasgow that Sunday for a golf break with pals in Portugal but did manage to see the game on TV over there.’ Meanwhile, at home in Crathes, Andy’s wife, Madeleine, and their sons Harry, three, and Teddy, one, also rejoiced in Handy Andy’s crucial strike. The family are revelling in their surroundings in the Banchory area, Andy’s home town. So what lies ahead for the man with the 1 April birthday? ‘I want to stay in football and to that end I am going to start trying to get my coaching badges in the autumn. In the meantime I feel I can play on until I am 36,’ said Andy. More goals like the winner against Celtic would suit him fine.
