Linton & Mac teams head for glory

Emerging Entrepreneur up for Award The term haute couture doesn’t instantly make you think of Scotland. Daniel Crozier is changing this mindset. Five years ago he started his own entrepreneurial journey, launching Aphrodite x Venus. The luxurious materials, meticulous fit and attention to detail in his designs mirror his ambitions, nothing less than extraordinary. Elevator and Business Gateway have supported him from the start of the process, and he feels honoured to be shortlisted in the 2019 Elevator Awards’ Emerging Entrepreneur category.

Successful first year for the new Salon 70 team A year after taking over at Salon 70, Sarah Jane Ironside and her team are celebrating a successful first year that has seen several changes and developments, the most exciting of which will be the launch of their hairdressing academy Queen Bee later this month.

Aberdeen-based hair salon Linton & Mac is celebrating after two teams from their staff placed as BEST IN REGION at the regional finals of L’Oreal Colour Trophy. Cut Expert Ross Hume teamed up with Colour Specialist Natasha McIntyre for the Men’s Image entry, which showed a modern adaptation of 1970’s bowl cut, coloured an aqua blue. Senior Stylist Jonny Brier, entered on his own in The Colour Trophy category with a sleek bob, coloured a tutti-frutti yellow to coral bleed colour.

Double celebrations Saks Union Square Principal Stylist Hanna from Saks Hair & Beauty in Union Square, has made it onto this years Saks UK ‘A-TEAM'. From May, Hanna will be off to Darlington once a month to work alongside the creative Saks UK Art Team, culminating in a photo shoot later in the year. Principal stylist Rebecca attended her L'Orèal Colour Specialist graduation in April, after scoring 96% in her final exams last year.

Rubislaw wins more industry recognition Aberdeen Jazz Festival 2019 beats its record This year’s Aberdeen Jazz Festival had a higher number of concert-goers than ever before with attendances topping 8000, over 420 individual musician engagements over 11 days, and reaching as far as Portsoy and Stonehaven. The programme also featured three world premieres, 15 Aberdeen premieres and a host of local musicians presenting special projects including Marisha Addison who celebrated 50 years at the centre of jazz performance in Aberdeen.

For the second year in a row, Aberdeen’s Rubislaw Park Care Home was named by carehome.co.uk as one of the top 20 most recommended care homes in Scotland. The national annual awards are based on 120,000 reviews from residents, families and friends - and Rubislaw Park Care Home is the only Aberdeen location to make it on to the 2019 list.

ward-winning makeup artist Jenny Gray is dedicated to making every bride feel – and look – truly beautiful on their wedding day. ‘I want people to feel special. As I know from magazine shoots and many bridal parties, makeup can be transformative. Seeing my client's delight at how they look and the confidence it gives them is magical. ‘I really listen to each bride’s vision and concerns in order to create their ideal look. During a trial, we start with a ‘no makeup’ makeup creating dewy skin and subtle enhancement of the bride’s best features. Then we work in stages towards a fuller look, so the bride can choose a look she loves. I get to know the bride, her vision and ensure she is 100% happy and stress free.

‘On the morning of the wedding, which can be anywhere in Scotland or beyond, it’s all about making sure that when the bride walks down the aisle, she looks and feels the most beautiful version of herself.’ Jenny uses cruelty-free products and is taking part in several wedding shows this summer.

Forest bathing may sound a little strange, but this Japanese health concept is proven to be good for wellbeing.

Aberdeenshire is blessed with some excellent woods and forests. Many of the local National Trust for Scotland properties have forested estates with free entry and marked trails, though for a sense of solitude, you’ll need to find your own route to avoid dog walkers and cyclists. Forestry Scotland publishes a leaflet of forest walks in Aberdeenshire available for download at https:// forestryandland.gov.scot/images/ pdf/rec_pdfs/Forestsaround Aberdeen Guide.pdf. Try Kirkhill Forest where you can discover the ruins of old croft cottages or climb up to Tappie Tower for a view over the landscape. Tyrebagger offers an outdoor sculpture trail, while summer in Cambus O’May offers a glimpse of iridescent jewelled dragonflies and damselflies that feel almost magical. Make time for forest bathing.

The Japanese call it Shinrin-yoku, a way of using all the senses to reconnect with nature. Studies show that being amongst trees can lower stress levels, heart rate and blood pressure as well as improving the function of the immune system. This makes sense, since – on an evolutionary scale – our urbanised lifestyles are a very recent development, separating us from our natural surroundings.

THROW ON SOME SHADES, BUY ONE OF THOSE RIDICULOUSLY HUGE FLOPPY HATS AND GRAB YOUR SUN BLOCK AS SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE!

W

hether you’re heading off to an exotic long haul destination, or just spending some time sipping a G&T on the sun lounger in your garden, you’ll need some help to develop perfectly sun kissed skin… Choosing the right tanning support can be tricky as there are a lot of options on the market to help you achieve your best tan while keep your skin protected at all times. The last place you want to burn is your face, so Ren’s new clean screen mineral SPF 30 (£30, renskincare.com) is a great starting point. This facial sun screen blocks harmful exposure from UVA, UVB and blue light, protecting and preventing skin from ageing in the sun. The passion fruit seed extract enriched formula also nurtures and supports the skin by absorbing oil to reduce pores and soothe irritation, leaving you with a soft and matte finish. If you’re keen to show off that bikini bod you’ve worked so hard on this past few months, then opt for Green People’s scent free sun tan lotion (£22.50, greenpeople. co.uk). This vegan and cruelty free high protection sun cream is a great for sensitive skin that suffers from prickly heat. It is also fully covered against UVA and UVB

making this the perfect product to fit into your daily skin care routine this summer. If you’re keen to accelerate your bronzing, then try Piz Buin’s tan intensifying sun spray (£8, superdrug.com). It’s not sticky or greasy and instead goes on easily to help give you a longer lasting tan. The hydrating formulation will leave your skin refreshed feeling velvety and smooth. You won’t have to worry about getting wet either as the product is sweat and water resistant. Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen (£21.73, storkz.com) is the perfect lifeguard to protect your entire family from harmful UV rays. You can let the kids get messy and enjoy the sun, sand and water, without a worry when they have this on. The brand’s advanced technology turns the bottle blue in heat as a reminder that it’s time for another top up. Not only will you know when to add another layer, you can rest assure that what you are putting on your children is non-toxic as it is also paraben and fragrance free. If you want to get ahead of that game, invest in James Read coconut dry oil tan (£25, jamesreadtan.com). You’ll achieve a natural looking glow without frying in the sun. Okay, it might be cheating but we certainly don’t care if it tans quickly and leaves you smelling like coconuts!

Start with a two colour rule and add pieces in black or white to maximise your options while still fitting everything into your carry-on luggage. Go for a lightweight cabin case rather than a leather holdall if your airline has a miserly luggage allowance, and check your case fits with the carrier’s ever-changing size requirements. No-one wants to unpack before boarding. Start with a showerproof jacket that goes with everything and a lightweight knit in cashmere that will combat the cool of the evening, and act as a cover-up for places that don’t allow bare arms or shoulders. You can wear these on the plane, so they won’t take up room. Excavate your wardrobe for pieces with a relaxed fit and flowy lines. The last thing you need on holiday is uncomfortable underwear, fabrics that show sweat or clothes that make you feel trussed up like a chicken about to be barbecued. Try everything on and if it doesn’t fit, then it doesn’t make the pile of options for consideration.

trousers will take you everywhere from the city’s backstreet antiques markets, pubs and tourist attractions to upmarket galleries and restaurants. Look for a bag that can carry everything you’ll need on board and can also use during your trip. There are some stylish backpacks around just now, but a cross-body style offers more security. If you can’t cope without an evening bag, try a flat suede envelope clutch with a wrist strap.

hether you’re heading for the bright lights of London, the romance of Paris, Amsterdam’s museums and canals, or a bit further afield, you’ll need some key pieces to create a weekend wardrobe that’ll combine comfort with effortless city chic.

Lay everything out on the bed a couple of days before you head off and mix and match your choices to pull different outfits together. If there’s anything that only goes with one thing, then put it back in the wardrobe. Likewise, you know - deep down – that you won’t wear five pairs of shoes over a long weekend and that you really don’t need four dresses and a full length evening gown, packed, ‘just in case’. Add your favourite, most comfortable, shoes or trainers for walking, heels for evening, a couple of pairs of cotton socks, a silk scarf or a necklace or two, undies, and a swimming costume if your hotel has a spa or pool. Chuck in a trashy novel, a plastic bag filled with mini toiletries and a lipstick, mascara and a pack of plasters for the inevitable blisters and you’re ready for anything.

Bon voyage!

Bon Accord bird display brightens city centre

Lewis Capaldi adds Aberdeen date to sold out arena tour Scottish singer-songwriter, Lewis Capaldi will play to crowds at the North-east’s brand new events venue, The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) on Sunday 15 March 2020. Around two years on from his debut live performances and occupying the number one spot on the official UK Charts for seven weeks with his hit single ‘Someone You Loved’, Capaldi is one of the most popular musicians of the moment.

Bon Accord shopping centre has added 540 metres of brightly coloured bird canopy across the Upperkirkgate, providing a striking and cheerful backdrop to help shoppers get into the spirit of summer. The canopy is just one of Bon Accord’s initiatives, which include the much visited rainbow steps, indoor beach and seasonal events.

CLAN Walk returns to Deeside The CLAN Walk, which is held at Crathes Castle will return for the third consecutive year with two extended routes added to the day’s events. If you’re going to need a suit, look for something in a loose, billowing cut in linen. Double-breasted is the shape of the season, but worn open. A relaxed fit single breasted cut is probably more versatile as you can pair the jacket with jeans or chinos during the day. It’ll work equally well with a shirt or t-shirt and you can even roll the legs up if you’re strolling in the surf.

The catwalk cruise collections were full of short shorts. In some cases, very short shorts. Unless you have a tan and toned legs, it’s probably best to give it a miss. Opt for more forgiving elasticated Bermuda shorts finishing just above the knee. There are some pastel short suits out there, but unless you are on stage with AC/DC, the overgrown schoolboy look is really best avoided.

Pack some plain blue or grey flip-flops for the beach, and some relaxed suede loafers for evenings. Sports and hiking sandals are back in fashion and great for trekking about in cities if you’re sightseeing. Lastly, roll your clothes instead of folding them and unpack immediately on arrival to avoid creasing. Wrinkles can be steamed out if you just hang things in the bathroom while you shower. Some fabrics are relatively crease free, but not always great for warmer weather. Wool, bamboo, polyester, cashmere, knitted fabrics or those with a little Lycra or Spandex are less likely to crease. Chuck in your sunglasses and a toothbrush and you’re good to go!

While a straw panama always looks elegant with a linen suit, bucket hats dominated the men’s shows this season. Look for something plain in your base colour, or choose a printed, textured, or patchwork version to add interest.

Pack three or four t-shirts. A smudgy sage green is the most wearable shade of the summer with its understated sludgy tones which complement blue or grey. Light blue, stripes or a plain white tee work with suits, jeans and shorts. Shirts are tending towards oversized with a new romantic vibe. Wear loosely tucked, part-tucked or with sleeves rolled back for a thrown together finish. For a short-sleeved option, give the Cabana set a bash; the combination of a patterned Cuban shirt with exact match swimming trunks or Bermuda shorts for a flamboyant look on the beach or in the bar.

© Under Armour

Obviously, what you pack will depend on where you’re going and what you’re doing when you get there. A city break, with a posh hotel and upscale restaurants requires a more formal approach than spending two weeks in a beachside apartment. Wherever you’re going, choose one colour - say blue or grey - as the basis of your holiday wardrobe and build on that.

neon were standout favourites for men’s swimwear this summer. Say Aloha to vibrant botanical prints; dive back into the 80s with swirly-whirly retro prints, Tetris blocks or Beetlejuice stripes. There is no excuse for budgie smugglers.

© Dune

The good news is that if you choose well, a capsule wardrobe of coordinated essentials will make it easy to look good on the beach and beyond.

© Teva

Packing for a holiday is always a challenge; especially if you have to try and squeeze a fortnight’s worth of crumple-free clothing into the two square inches of suitcase that your other half has generously allocated.

SCOTT HARVEY, HOWIES

S

cott Harvey can be found on the pitch when he’s not in the kitchen at Howies. ’I’ve wanted to be a chef since I was five, so this is my dream job. I worked in restaurants all over Ayrshire before moving to the city. At one harbour-side restaurant, we’d watch the boat come in with fresh fish for us to prepare - amazing. ’Love brought me to Aberdeen six years ago, so my spare time revolves around the family, I also love watching and playing football, and playing the odd video game! ’At Howies, our style of cooking is all about fresh produce sourced as locally as possible. It’s great getting to know our suppliers and finding out exactly where our ingredients come from. I really enjoy cooking traditional dishes - such as Cullen skink - which feature on our menu here. Just good wholesome food. ’As our menus change with the seasons, we always know what ingredients are ready for us to work with. A lot of research will go into the changing of a dish, we’ll get inspiration from seasonal produce available, recipe books and things we’ve learned throughout our careers. It’s very much a team effort with us all sharing ideas and flavours.’ Chapel Street, Aberdeen AB10 1SN Tel: 01224 639500 howies.uk.com

ABERDEEN BEACH

STONEHAVEN BEACH

LIL’C’S BAR-B-Q

THE PIER

Lil C’s is a bit off the beaten path, nestled in the shadow of Bennachie in the village of Oyne. This is possibly the last place one would expect to find a good old-fashioned American Bar-B-Q joint. Yet there it is, and it was hopping when we visited on a Saturday night.

The seaside vibe is strong at The Pier, from the backdrop of Codona’s brightly coloured ferris wheel to the scrubbed wood effect floors and sea blue walls. The menu evokes holidays and weekends, with an appealing mix of breakfast and brunch dishes until 3pm (all day on Sunday), including pancake stacks and eggs lots of ways.

OYNE

Many come to Lil C’s for the perfectly seasoned ribs and thick milkshakes, but we sampled their new menu and between the four of us, we covered a lot of ground. I went for the house rub salmon fillet, with a homemade mango salsa on the side. The kids sampled a homemade chipotle bean burger, fried chicken and waffles, homemade buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy, a basket of sweet potato fries, and a Mac Daddy, which is a burger topped with a mound of macaroni and cheese. Amazingly, we saved room to share the Malibu roasted pineapple for dessert. As an American, this is the kind of food I was raised on, so I can vouch for its authenticity. Here, it is all about the flavours, which are conveyed through their original rubs, sauces and salsas. Lil’ C’s is well worth the drive.

The lunch menu has light options, baked potatoes, paninis and flatbreads, plus some mains including handmade burgers and fish and chips. The Monday special was mussels, with a choice of three sauces, two sizes and your choice of side. My friend had the starter size and pronounced them melt-in-the-mouth with a lovely mariniere sauce. I loved the pulled pork bun with sweet potato fries and homemade ‘slaw which comes with their signature P on the brioche bun. The drinks list is also extensive with everything from smoothies and shakes to cocktails and Eteaket teas, and you can get a Mackie’s ice cream cone to take away for pudding! Pieraberdeen.co.uk

MOLLY’S

Molly’s is a long-time favourite in Stonehaven. It’s open for breakfast and lunch all week and you can also sample their bistro delights on Thursday to Saturday nights. The eggs benedict and the cullen skink come particularly recommended. We dined early on a Saturday evening, when the relaxed atmosphere attracted a mix of family groups, friends and date night couples. Since Beloved was driving, I had a mood-enhancing Porn Star Martini, followed by two large wedges of meltingly oozy crispy crumbed brie with salad and a tangy homemade tomato, chilli and basil chutney. Beloved is a little competitive as a diner, so he was pleased when his battered haddock was so big it overhung the plate. This proved to be perfectly cooked, flaky and moist and came with a pile of skin on-fries and a piquant tartare sauce. My chargrilled cauliflower steaks had an unexpected depth of earthy flavours, augmented by the slow roasted parsnips and crispy shallots. Beloved rhapsodised over his white chocolate brownie, but typically didn’t share and my baked apple with ice cream and excellently nutty crumble was a retro delight. Mollyscafebar.co.uk

Culinary delights this summer Creating good food using only the best local ingredients is at the heart of everything we do.

T

he Carriage in Ballater is more than just a café. It’s also a tearoom, a bistro, a shop and a trip down memory lane. Slide into a leather banquette with your morning newspaper, and it’s as if you’re sitting in an old steam train, surrounded by travel posters evoking a more nostalgic time. Hearty homemade café fare such as soup and scones are served during the day, then from Thursday to Saturday the space transforms into a bistro for the evening.

REDISCOVERING THE ART OF THE AFTERNOON TEA IN BALLATER

Rothesay Rooms and The Carriage are sister businesses, both run by The Prince's Foundation, and as such strive to create local employment and to work with the community. Executive Chef Ross Cochrane and Head Chef Bartek Bukowski work with local suppliers and seasonal food to offer a spread of dining across the establishments, from luxury dining to bistro food, but never compromising on flavour and provenance.

A very special treat awaits at The Carriage for anyone who feels that afternoon tea has lost its way. Book an afternoon tea in the tearoom just off the platform, and you will be treated to a truly Royal-style taste experience, from the dainty cucumber sandwiches to the mini, melt-in-your-mouth scones, and topped with delights such as cream cheese and blueberry tart, passion fruit and white chocolate delice, rhubarb and custard crumble and faultless macarons. Anyone looking for private dining with wow factor should definitely consider the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Waiting Room, and if you’d like a souvenir to remember your visit, the Highgrove Shop is at the end of the platform, stocked with a range of Highgrove products including the beautiful china used for the afternoon teas. CRAIG WILSON, KILTED CHEF, SHARES SOME TIPS FOR A GREAT BARBECUE

S

unny weather, good friends, great music and great food are all you need for a barbecue that’s remembered for all the right reasons. Go beyond the usual burgers and sausages and buy the best meat you can afford. Try marinated wings, ribs, peppered steaks and have plenty of veggie options, cooked in a separate bit of the grill. Raid the kitchen for mustards, pickles and salad dressings that can turn even the plainest

of meat products into something special. Try a pot of a rustic spicy bean stew or make parcels of garlic and sweet potato, or marinade meat overnight in beer. Using different smoke chips can also take your BBQ to the next level. Don’t forget halloumi, Quorn or veggie burgers or try BBQ nuts and charred cauliflower steaks. Allow three platefuls per person and use sturdy recyclable plates. BBQ sorted!

Ingredients • 30ml Porter’s Gin • 20ml Lemon Juice • 10ml Sugar • Top Champagne The French 75 is a classic cocktail created in 1915 at Harry’s Bar in Paris, and is one of our favourite drinks at Orchid. A simple concoction, perfect for any occasion! orchidaberdeen.com

NEPTUNE BY TREEHOUSE

Interior design can often feel like an insurmountable challenge, but if you love Neptune’s timeless, cool interiors ranges, then Neptune by Treehouse at Midmar may have the perfect solution.

T

hey’re delighted to be launching a new home design service. It’s an easy, less overwhelming way to bring the best in interior design into your home, without drowning in thousands of choices. You’ll have the timeless Neptune look, but with room to make it your own.

When your designs are ready we’ll invite you back into the store, where we’ll present your room design to you and make any final changes. You’ll have a mood board, sample board, detailed quote and to-scale AUTOCAD line drawing at the end of it to help you see your new room coming into shape.

It all begins with some one-on-one time with our interior designer Lucy Fowlie to discuss your ideas, wishes and wants. Lucy will take you through the collections, explain how the design service works and answer any early questions you might have. If you have a budget in mind, just let Lucy know so we can bear that in mind from the word go.

If you’re happy, we can place the order and get the wheels in motion. Alternatively, you can take your mood board home to mull things over, then come back to us when you’re ready. After your design fee, you don’t need to pay anything until your design presentation.

If you want to go ahead, we’ll then come to your home to have an indepth design session lasting several hours. Together, we’ll go over colour palettes, samples, textiles and layouts, and take measurements. When we head on our way, we’ll have a crystal-clear picture of what works for you, what you love and how you want your room to look.

The whole service - from concepts to the home visit and final room design - costs just £300. If you decide to do extra rooms as part of the same project, they’ll cost just £200 each. As a bonus, if you spend over £5,000 per room on our Neptune collections, we’ll refund your design fee in the form of gift vouchers so you can pop back for some extra accessories that you’ve got your eye on or to keep safe for a future project.

fabulous new musical based on the cult Oscar-winning film Little Miss Sunshine takes to the stage at His Majesty’s from 17-21 September, with Gary Wilmot in the role of a very grumpy granddad. We have a pair of tickets to this funny, uplifting tale which proves the road to happiness is a bumpy ride - particularly if you have to fit an entire family of misfits into an ancient yellow campervan for an 800 mile trip to a beauty pageant in California!

There’s only one way to see if young Olive Hoover wins the Little Miss Sunshine Beauty Pageant, whether the campervan survives the trip and whether the family can resolve their differences, so book your place on the road trip now. To enter, go to trendmagazine.co.uk and answer this question:

What’s the name of the beauty contest Olive wants to enter?

The distillery announced the sale of just 88 limited edition casks as part of its founders’ collective. The whisky will be matured until 2029 and Deeside Distillery is the first new distillery in Royal Deeside to produce whisky in almost 200 years. Ben said, ‘It is incredibly exciting to own my first cask of future whisky from a local distillery. I have watched the Deeside Distillery team develop their products over the years so to be able to own one of the first casks produced is a huge privilege. I now just have a few years to wait until I can bottle it up in the future!’

Liam Pennycook, head distiller said, ‘We were delighted to welcome Ben into the distillery for the filling of the first of our 88 casks. He is a fantastic ambassador for the area and achieved a huge amount in his sport and now in business, so we couldn’t be happier that he was able to fill up his own cask. ‘We have spent almost two years experimenting with laying down octaves to gather as much insight as possible and we are certain that we have created something special with our future single malt and delighted with the interest from investors so far.’ Casks are priced from £7,500. This is a unique opportunity to purchase the only casks that will ever be produced from Deeside Distillery, with plans secured for a two-acre site in Hill of Banchory for a new distillery. Expert legal support during separation

Balfour + Manson has a very experienced Family Law team in Aberdeen. Here are their top tips for separating couples… Don’t panic - be patient. Separation isn’t a single event - it’s a journey and it takes time to arrive at your destination. That journey will be a lot smoother if you have the right people alongside you, so pick your professional advisers wisely and get some advice early on, so that any discussions with your partner are focused and productive. We offer a fixed fee ‘initial meeting package’ to enable you to get this early advice, without having to sign up to an ongoing process. This should give you the confidence to approach the separation with clarity on what the options are for you. At Balfour + Manson we advise clients to consider how both parties are going to make decisions about the practical aspects of a separation. Separation

doesn’t have to be a battle and it doesn’t even have to involve the courts. Collaboration and Mediation focus on the needs and interests of all family members and help former partners create their own solution to meet as many of those needs and interests as possible. It’s not easy, but try to deal with your former partner in a businesslike way. Remain civilised and try to avoid conflict or personal comments. Don’t vent your frustrations on social media. If there are children involved, try to maintain a positive attitude towards your former partner as a parent. You are separating, but your children are not. There’s no benefit to a child in seeing their parents express anger, resentment and hurt towards each other.

t’s a chance to revisit familiar foodie favourites and discover new tastes and new places, all at a bargain price. This summer’s Aberdeen Restaurant Week, which is organised by Aberdeen Inspired, will burst into life in the city centre from July 15 to 21 July with a wide range of local restaurants taking part. Whether you’re looking for a high-end tasting menu, a chance to sample an adventurous new cuisine, or just a feast for the family, there’s something to suit. ‘More than forty local businesses took part in the February event, reporting a large uplift in customer levels, so the initiative is great for diners and the local economy’,

Nicola Johnston, evening and night-time economy manager of Aberdeen Inspired, explained. ‘We were pleased with the response to the last Aberdeen Restaurant Week, which was really embraced by both businesses and the public alike. ‘Our aim with the event is to encourage everyone to enjoy everything our city centre has to offer. It is all about trying new restaurants, sampling different food and enjoying the vibrant nightlife we are proud to promote in the Granite City. ‘Previous Aberdeen Restaurant Weeks have been really positive and have had a noticeable impact

on customer levels. We’re all looking forward to more of the same when it returns in July.’ Look out for tasting menus, drink pairing menus and afternoon teas along with the traditional pricing structure of a two-course lunch priced at £10 per person and three-course dinner for £20 per person. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Hamburg is bisected by the Elbe, a wide and fast flowing waterway for superyachts, ferries and cruise ships amongst others. Walk or cycle the Elbe Tunnel under the river to the other side for an unusual view of the city.

Did you know that Hamburg was full of canals? I certainly didn’t but a wander round the impressive red brick warehouses of the Speicherstadt put me right.

Kids of all ages will love Miniatur Wunderland, a tiny scale model of Hamburg itself, as well as parts of Italy, Switzerland and USA, complete with teeny people and animals and thousands of moving parts, some of which you can activate yourself. Every 15 minutes this Lilliputian land goes from night to day so you can appreciate all the nightscapes. For a visitor attraction with a difference, head for Dialog im Dunkeln, where you will experience what it’s like to live life as a blind person, using your other senses to help you. Hamburg has a rising reputation for nightlife, which ranges from the lively district of St. Pauli, where the kilometrelong Reeperbahn mixes the red light district with pubs and clubs, to the sleek and modern HafenCity. The river is also a vibrant party location, with floating clubs and swimming bars for those long summer nights, and a Saturday/Sunday all-nighter is not complete until you’ve

conjuring up a GREAT ATMOSPHERE AT YOUR WEDDING

E

very couple wants their wedding day to be special and their guests to mix and have fun throughout the day. Therefore finding a way to break the ice and to get people talking is essential. Jeff Burns and Ivor Smith of Fifth Dimension have been doing just that for more than 20 years. Ivor said, ‘As magicians, we help guests relax and mix through the use of sophisticated close-up magic; as magic is both active and interactive it’s the perfect way to break the ice. As well as helping guests to relax it also provides a great party atmosphere.’

One of the most important times of your wedding day is when the photographs are being taken. Quite often guests have to spend a lot of time standing around at the wedding reception whilst the bride and groom, along with the guests at varying times, have their photos taken. A little bit of magic not only makes the time pass quickly but can also help to make sure that the photos turn out well by helping the guests relax. Jeff said, ‘For a really eye catching addition to your wedding album, we can provide fantastic and unusual photo opportunities with your guests’ looks of amazement

and enjoyment as they experience our magic up close and often in their own hands. And of course we always reserve a special piece of magic for the bride and groom.’ If you have planned your day well, you should be able to relax and enjoy the day as it unfolds, safe in the knowledge that not only you but your guests are having a magical time. he 10k, Family Run and Aberdeen’s only city centre half marathon will be staged for a third year this summer when thousands of people will pull on their trainers and take to the streets of the Granite City for fun, fitness and fundraising, with the option to run, jog or walk the event.

ADVERTISEMENTS | 83

Parents can run the one-mile Family Run loop with their budding young athletes before heading back to the Union Street start line where the incredible atmosphere and support of the spectators will set runners off on their own 10k or half marathon challenge, with both distances setting off together for the first time. See the city through a runner’s eyes on the traffic-free routes that start and finish on Union Street and take in the modern and historic areas of the city including Castlegate, Beach Ballroom and Brig O’Balgownie before heading to Aberdeen harbour and along the seafront to enjoy the views across the North Sea. The half marathon also includes a section through Seaton Park before heading past St Machar’s Cathedral

See the city through a runner’s eyes and along the cobbled streets of Old Aberdeen. Music, bands, charity cheering points and crowds of enthusiastic spectators will support and motivate runners around the course as they tick off the kilometres and miles towards the finish line and that amazing feeling of achievement. In another first for the event, a pioneering initiative to encourage improved fitness and wellbeing in the community has been

launched with Aberdeen Football Club. Creating a special red Dons wave, the famous football club will encourage their club supporters with special training programmes and advice ready for the big day. The event also sees the return of the Business Challenge which sees Aberdeen companies of all shapes and sizes compete for fastest-time trophies and bragging rights among corporate competitors. But it’s not all about the friendly rivalry with many companies using it to focus on the health and mental well-being of staff as well as a perfect team bonding event. IF ABERDEEN-BORN BAND CANARY GOLD WAS TAKEN AS A TEST CASE, THERE WOULD BE A STRONG ARGUMENT FOR GENETICS. Canary Gold is fronted by brothers Spencer and JP O’Grady, who have been creating music together ever since they were youngsters growing up at the foot of Bennachie. While other boys obsessed over bending it like Beckham, the O’Grady’s yearned to emulate the likes of Ray Charles and Stevie Ray Vaughan. With their inaugural instruments being purchased in a Lidl weekly special, their sound has certainly come a long way over the years. Today, Canary Gold’s music can best be described as indie rock/pop, although their unique and ever-changing sound actually makes it difficult to pigeonhole. BBC’s Vic Galloway described their debut single as ‘epic piano-led rock’ and ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill, who introduced the band at a

gig in Texas, simply described them as ‘his favourite up and coming band.’ Though everyone in the band can play multiple instruments, Spencer fills the role of lead guitarist, while JP spends most of his time behind his stage piano. They alternate on lead vocals, with Spencer explaining, ‘we have an unwritten rule that if I write a song, I sing it, and vice versa. We are brothers, after all, so we’re not the best at sharing.’ Supported by bassist Bryn McLernon and drummer Gregor Marr, Canary Gold is currently working feverishly to release a new single every couple of months, while continually evolving their live set, which they have been playing to captive audiences throughout Scotland. These days, the music industry is teeming with bands hoping to get discovered, which means one has to be exceptional to be heard above all the noise. Canary Gold fuses bold instrumentation, haunting harmonies, and the symbiosis of life experience that only siblings share. The resulting sound is as daring as it is familiar, and certainly powerful enough to be heard. canarygoldband.com

WIN a luxury break aboard Fingal, Edinburgh’s luxury ship hotel

F

ancy a break on a luxury ship, berthed in the historic Port of Leith? Fingal is a former Northern Lighthouse Board ship, which has had a £5 million makeover featuring beautiful cabins, wonderful dining and entertaining spaces. Developed by The Royal Yacht Britannia, Fingal’s 23 luxury cabins are each named after Stevenson lighthouses, inspired by her rich maritime heritage. Sleek corridors lined with lighthouse images lead to the choice of cabins, from a luxury cabin with access to the deck, a duplex cabin with comfortable living space or the stunning Skerryvore Suite with extensive outdoor space to relax and entertain. The interiors offer the highest specifications of craftmanship and finish, with nautical touches and polished woods, sumptuous Scottish leathers and the finest linens.

Our winner and their guest will spend the night in a Classic Cabin and enjoy a full Scottish breakfast and Afternoon Tea for 2. The prize is subject to availability and valid from Sunday to Thursday until 30 November 2019. It’s enough to make an oligarch jealous! While aboard, why not pop into The Lighthouse Bar - a stylish yet relaxed setting for enjoying Fingal’s interpretation of a classic afternoon tea or a light supper celebrating the best of Scotland’s larder. Raise a glass at the welcoming Moët Hennessy Champagne bar or enjoy a cocktail from the creative menu whilst the sun sets through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Spacious outdoor decks provide a blend of private and public spaces to bask in the quayside setting or sit out under the stars. Fingal is also the perfect venue for hosting upscale intimate events, such as parties, weddings and corporate events for up to sixty guests. A spectacular ballroom reached by a

sweeping staircase is nestled uniquely in the former hold of the ship and flooded in light by a moveable skylight above. Permanently berthed in Edinburgh’s waterfront hotspot of Leith, our winner and their guest will be ideally situated to access the best the city has to offer. Award-winning restaurants, bars, artisan boutiques and galleries are just a few minutes’ walk away. The Royal Yacht Britannia is also nearby. 94 | THE LAST WORD

THE LAST WORD | 95

THE LAST WORD

Charles Skene W

hen you sit down for a chat with Aberdeen’s visionary entrepreneur, Charles Skene, you simply cannot believe that the former wedding photographer turned 84 at the end of April. While other men of the same vintage may struggle to walk the dog, he is full on at the helm of the Skene House brand of hotels, serviced apartments and flats, all under one roof in three different locations in the city, Rosemount, Whitehall and Holburn. Our get-together is ostensibly to celebrate 40 years of offering guests an unrivalled choice of city-centre accommodation for what could be one night or one year. However, it’s no secret that the hospitality sector in the North-east is currently riding out the storm of a severe downturn and Skene House is no exception. If we stay off the subject of what Charles calls the ‘punitive’ rates revaluation of 2017, then we can focus on a true success story.

‘We are especially fortunate to have brought on a team of home-grown hospitality professionals,’ he says. ‘Our policy is to promote from within, where possible, and our current management team comprises talented individuals who started their careers with us as a housemaid, a laundry driver, a student on placement, and, more recently, a receptionist. ‘This team has been nurtured under our general manager who joined us nearly 20 years ago, following a career in country house hotels.’ Charles believes a successful operation can be measured in the amount of repeat business Skene enjoys. ‘Many guests have stayed with us weekly,’ he adds, ‘and at Holburn we have had regulars staying with us midweek for 20 years.’

We meet at the Skene House on Rosemount Viaduct but only after I have been amazed to be able to park at the back of the building in an area accessed down a narrow entrance off Baker Street. What a hidden treasure that is in the middle of a city and, yes, it’s strictly private.

Perhaps less well known in the Skene portfolio is a development begun on part of Inchmarlo estate, near Banchory, which Charles acquired in the 1980s. ‘On a trip to the US, I was made aware of the concept of continuing care and I believe we were among the first in the UK to embrace it,’ he says. ‘Now, there are nearly 200 houses and flats there and if the need arises, there is a care home at the top of the hill.’

Charles is in no doubt as to what has seen the Skene House concept flourish.

Charles has enjoyed diverse roles and activities outside of work,

Words by Peter Mitchell

including Junior Chamber Aberdeen, a long stint as a visiting professor of entrepreneurship at Robert Gordon University, and generous sponsorship of an award for outstanding young musicians at the international festival of youth orchestras in Aberdeen which ran from 1976 to 1999. Little wonder he is also a patron of the North East of Scotland Music School, based in the city’s Huntly Street, and indeed took singing lessons there. ‘One of my happiest memories of my time as a boarder at Loretto School in Musselburgh was singing in the chapel twice on a Sunday,’ he says. He also played the bass drum in a brass band while doing his National Service in the Royal Navy but not, of course on the high seas. No, it was during his training at HMS Ceres in Yorkshire. So what is the message from someone who has enjoyed fine dining on land and sea all over the world with his wife, Alison, has heard Paul Robeson sing at the Music Hall in Aberdeen, and has been a guest of Prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major at 10 Downing Street? ‘Be a dreamer who does,’ he says, before dashing off to his Rotary Club lunch. For an hour or so, he can forget that, in his book, revaluation has led to devaluation of all he has worked for.
