In June and July, we turn our thoughts to lazy days in the sun, when we’re finally able to wear sandals without risking a toe or two to frostbite and the almost forgotten experience of the warmth of the sun on our backs, rather than the warmth of our down-filled jackets! It’s all floaty dresses, shorts and reclining languorously in a hammock while sipping something that involves bubbles. Summer should stretch forward for months of uninterrupted sunshine. Of course, it doesn’t always work out quite that way, so it’s important to make the most of the opportunities that a spell of decent weather offers. Now’s the time to get out and about, taking advantage of the longer nights to reconnect with nature and all that the area has to offer. Head to the beach or up into the hills. Explore your surroundings, go for a drive and discover some where you haven’t been before. Plan a picnic with the family or invite friends for a barbecue. Even if it’s a bit damp or chilly, live your life like it’s 24oC! We’re here to help you make the most of your Summer…

At some time, one in five of us will visit our GP, suffering from acid reflux and there are few adults who haven’t experienced the discomfort of heartburn. For many people, acid reflux can be managed by dietary care or a drug regime. For others, who live each day with pain and inconvenience of gastro-esophageal reflux disease or GORD, which impacts on their daily lives and work, the Aberdeen Clinic offers one of the UK’s most experienced team of surgeons, nurses, gastroenterologists and specialist physiologists dedicated to creating individual care and treatment plans. The traditional surgical approach to GORD is fundoplication. This is a surgical technique which creates an artificial valve between the oesophagus and the stomach. These operations are done using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgical techniques and are generally very effective in controlling reflux. The GORD team at the Aberdeen Clinic is headed up by Ken Park, a dedicated and vastly experienced Consultant Surgeon, who explained, ‘Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a condition caused when the stomach contents backtrack out of the stomach into the lower oesophagus or gullet. The acid produced by the stomach can cause pain behind the breastbone
and a burning discomfort rising upwards, known as heartburn, but some people also experience, hoarseness, a cough, nausea and/or excess saliva. ‘Although fundoplication can be effective in many cases, it can lead to side-effects. We’ve been at the forefront of a new procedure, LINX, which is approved by the healthcare regulator NICE and also by the FDA in the USA. LINX has now been used over 4000 times worldwide, with great success. It is a keyhole
The Aberdeen Clinic also offers specialist care in the following areas: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
operation which augments the normal valve by placing a band of magnets around the junction between the stomach and the oesophagus. The advantage of the LINX procedure is that it results in a more natural swallowing mechanism than the traditional surgery and, as such, is not associated with side effects, such as bloating. ‘No matter what their health problems, everyone we see at the Aberdeen Clinic is different, so we work with them to create an individual treatment plan. We believe that everyone should get the same high standards of investigation and treatment that we would expect ourselves and we draw on some of the
UK’s most gifted and well regarded specialists to make this happen. The Aberdeen Clinic also has an outstanding reputation for specialist care for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Varicose Vein Treatment, Allergies and Weight Management, as well as Minor Surgery and advanced endoscopy techniques. It’s all part of our top-to-toe, patient centred approach to health and wellbeing’.

Junior Coaching Programme allows children of all ages to excel in Swimming and Tennis. The swimming programme follows the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) guidelines and syllabus. Children from aged three months plus can take part in lessons, which are grouped firstly by age and then by ability. Sharon Banks daughter Kenzie, has been swimming at the club now for six years and says ‘she’s grown in confidence, developed her strokes and looks forward each week to her lessons.’ Their Tennis programme starts from age three in the Tots and Parents programme which teaches the child and parent basic tennis and co-ordination skills. The programme then progresses from into four further stages each carefully progressing the child using different
balls and slowly increasing court size until children are playing on full size courts with proper tennis balls. It’s a fantastic environment to learn in, with a warm teaching swimming pool, experienced teachers and small class sizes. They expand their swimming and tennis programmes to accommodate all children each term thus removing barriers to learning key skills.

If you’ve ever considered aesthetic treatments, but would prefer the reassurance and expertise of seeing a doctor, then The Dunnottar Clinic is the place to go. 'We were aware that many of our patients were getting aesthetic treatments but wanted the reassurance of being assessed and treated by qualified and experienced medical practitioners in a safe, professional environment. Our advanced aesthetic training, coupled with many years of experience, means that we can offer rejuvenating Botox and filler treatments which result in a fresher, younger, but natural look,' explained Dr. Kris McLaughlin. 'The clinic offers a thorough assessment process,' Dr Stuart Reary added, 'we spend time with our clients, discussing their expectations, their medical history and talking through possible side effects like bruising. Botox will last 4-6 months and can lessen the
appearance of wrinkles and frown lines. We also offer the Juvéderm filler range, which restores skin volume loss and can reshape the face or lips for a fresher look that can last for up to 18 months. Later this year, we will also offer an advanced eight point non-surgical facelift treatment, which promises excellent results.' The clinic also offers private minor surgery, such as the removal of moles and skin tags for cosmetic reasons. There’s also a travel clinic for anti-malarial tablets and immunisations including being a registered centre for Yellow Fever vaccine jabs.
The clinic offers offshore medicals, Meningitis B vaccinations for children and electro-acupuncture for pain control, IBS and menopausal symptoms. Appointments at The Dunnottar Clinic are available from 8am to 6pm on weekdays and by arrangement in the evenings. Appointments can be made by phone, e-mail or online. 32 Robert Street, Stonehaven AB39 2EL Tel: 0345 337 1160 administrator@thedunnottarclinic.co.uk www.thedunnottarclinic.co.uk

Now’s the time to get kitted out with some stylish shades for when the sun finally peeps out from behind the clouds. Finding the perfect sunglasses means getting the right shape, style and, most importantly, a great fit. Our advice is to head to an optician who can advise on what will look good, provide prescription lenses if needed and custom fit. Sore ears and red marks on your nose always undermine any attempt to look cool and sophisticated!
This year’s designer styles are more flamboyant than before and are shifting back to larger, less minimalistic frames. Dior showed dual coloured mirror shades, while Prada opted for a heavy round look and Tom Ford featured metallic aviators. Take your pick, or keep it classic with retro Wayfarers from RayBan.

THE AESTHETIC ROOM: NEW LASER TECHNOLOGY FOR TATTOO REMOVAL... Louise and Ellen at The Aesthetic Room have responded to the increasing demand for tattoo removal by introducing the first Clinical Derma Q-Switched laser in town. Unlike some surgical, chemical and other treatments available, it is now possible to remove all shades of ink, including stubborn oranges and yellows - eradicating the signs of a misspent youth! Louise has extensive experience of laser tattoo removal and is hugely impressed by the new machine, saying, 'The Clinical Derma laser makes tattoo removal simple. After a free consultation, we can remove unwanted tattoos using the laser to fire a beam of light through the skin in extremely short pulses. This allows the gradual and natural bodily removal of the pigment over a series of treatments. As a guide, most Indian ink amateur tattoos should respond with between three and ten treatments. Coloured professional tattoos usually take between eight and twelve treatments. In general, our costs range from £50 to £400 per treatment per tattoo, though if more than one tattoo is being removed a discount may apply.
Ellen added, 'During a treatment session, which can last from five minutes to an hour, we cool the skin to minimise stinging and the minor discomfort that some clients experience. It’s important that the treated area should be protected from the sun. We recommend the use of sun block before, during and for six months after the period over which the tattoo is being removed and the use on sunbeds is prohibited.' Both Ellen and Louise are fully qualified to offer this new form of laser tattoo removal treatment.
TREATMENTS AVAILABLE AT THE AESTHETIC ROOM: > Microblading > Facial line softening injections > Dermal fillers > Skin rehydration treatment > Hyperhidrosis > Dermal roller > Microdermabrasion > Skin renewal peel
Louise continued, 'Laser treatment is considered to be the safest method of tattoo removal. The Q-Switched lasers are part of a new generation which neither burn nor cut the skin’s surface. They have been used extensively in medical practice for a number of years and The Aesthetic Room at The House is one of the few aesthetic centres in the UK to offer this treatment.'

The old bank in Huntly may no longer be a place to deposit your hard earned cash, but it’s now certainly a place where you should spend it. Reincarnated as The Bank Café and Restaurant, the old money house has been transformed. Echoes of the building’s rich history have been maintained and woven into the restaurant’s graceful and modern decor. It is at once elegant without being pretentious.
My own dining experience began with an appetiser of luscious tomato soup with celeriac, a tasty glimpse of the goodness to come. My starter of smoked Loch Fyne trout with truffled free range hen’s egg, capers and brioche was something else. It was stylishly put together and exceptionally delectable. The main was another fine affair. A confit leg of duck with petis pois a la Françoise, boudin noir, chorizo sausage and pont neuf potatoes - the duck fell off the bone, tender and succulent.
Equally elegant is the food. The Bank may have only opened its doors six months ago but it has already been shortlisted as one of only four finalists for the North-east of Scotland Restaurant of the Year Award.
Facing the struggle of finding room for dessert, I was gently and happily persuaded to try the baked chocolate fondant. The fondant, put simply, was out of this world. It was the ultimate indulgence, oozing rich chocolatey goodness.
Their award winning chef, David Mutter, serves up the specially selected menu, using locally sourced ingredients and the best of in-season meat, fish, and vegetables. Dishes are thoughtfully put together and quench the appetites of both those with a sophisticated palate and those more accustomed to traditional fare.
The perfect place for a chic meal on date night or a delightful evening meal with family or friends, the Bank Restaurant is certainly a place worth investing in. No. 2 The Square, Huntly AB54 8AE Tel: 07955710755 www.thebankhuntly.co.uk

'I grew up in Applecross. The peninsula is pretty remote on the coast in the North West Highlands, so moving to Aberdeen to do a catering course at 15 was a bit of a change! As a teenager, I helped out in the Applecross Inn, which is famous for its freshly caught seafood, graduating from washing up to being part of the kitchen team. 'Over the next fifteen years, I worked in many of the best kitchens in Aberdeen and beyond and met my wife, Mary, along the
way. We have a five year old son called Andrew and a daughter Ella, who managed to time her entry into the world just as we launched No. 10 Bar & Restaurant, so I didn’t get much sleep that week! 'No.10 has proved very popular since it opened, and I think that is down to our menu which is based on classic cooking with a twist. It’s relaxed and contemporary and we make use of the best local and Scottish produce with some more eclectic dishes to
keep our customers interested. I am also influenced by seasonal produce and I like to build good relationships with my suppliers so I can get the very best ingredients for our new menus and daily specials - I phone our fish supplier almost every night to see what’s expected in. 'After a busy shift in the kitchen, I’ll sometimes have a steak pie from the baker inside a softie with lots of sauce! Probably best if you don’t tell my wife, though!'

The provision of General Practitioner services in Scotland is changing - and will continue to change even more in the future as the Scottish Government Health Strategy progressively removes first line access to an NHS GP for the majority of the population. Whilst the more diverse practitioners (such as nurses and pharmacists) now seeing patients in GP surgeries all have their strengths, many people may feel that they would rather have a choice as to whether they want to be seen by a GP or a different practitioner. YourGP in Aberdeen’s Albyn Lane provides a private, highly accessible GP-led service with flexible appointment durations that are responsive to what you really need.
They employ highly experienced GPs who can offer an extended range of care including steroid joint and other injections, travel immunisations including Yellow Fever and many other treatments. They can facilitate access to all secondary care pathways but their main focus is on you and giving you the time you need to explore your concerns - without the inconvenience of waiting for an appointment. Your time is important and so is your health. So move your healthcare to the front of the queue with YourGP.

With smaller spaces, there is a greater focus on the detail and so it’s really important to have a strong plan that is thought through before starting. Follow these simple rules and make your small garden appear bigger.
WORDS BY KIRSTY MCLEAN
LOSE THOSE BOUNDARIES Paint fences a light colour, such as Swedish or Castle Grey, Soft Sage Green or Elderflower to open up the space and provide a great foil against which to plant. If possible, build raised beds inside the fence or walling and use the height to get instant impact from planting densely. PROPORTION The proportion of lawn or paving to planting is important. Consider the size of planters, pots and outdoor furniture to the proportion of the overall space. SHAPE A circle will give the illusion of the space being wider. Two circles, will give the perception of distance. A lazy ‘S’ will make the garden longer and provide flow and movement. If you prefer more angular shapes then try two interlocking squares of lawn, offset to one another or on the angle.
PLANTERS & POTS Leave space for pots and planters, either collected together in a display or used separately to create interest. These can make a great contribution to the overall styling and feel of the garden.
FOCAL POINT By introducing a focal point in the distance, this provides something to fix on, making the space seem bigger. MATERIALS Use light-reflective materials and colours that reflect light. PLANTING Be bold with your planting, keeping it predominantly evergreen. Using big-leafed plants with architectural shapes along with other sizes and textures of flower and leaf.
LIGHTING Simple up-lighting in borders creates atmosphere and highlights textures and colours. All these tips can be applied to roof gardens too, providing you check the structural load. Replacing raised beds with rectangular planters that fit together around the inside of the boundaries. Replace grass with artificial grass and paving with wood. You don’t have to be stuck with the white wood ridged decking boards, for a little extra cost you can have beautiful cedar, larch wood or even a low maintenance composite decking board that comes in a variety of colours and textures. You don’t have to have acres to have a beautiful and functional garden.

Advertising is one option a business may consider to promote itself. Some traditional mediums can be considered risky, but businesses can reduce this risk by:
Businesses need to make sure that their promise is delivered. There is no point in getting customers to your door if you don’t have the product or service to back it up!
One thing that is common for all, is that pushing during busy times will help to maximise on spend. But this could be wasteful if the business is not in a position to deliver, so capacity needs to be considered too.

Developing a structured marketing plan will help businesses map out their marketing spend for the year ahead, helping to streamline activity and giving them clear goals to measure. MAKING THE MOST OF OUR COAST
A museum housed in a historic coastguard building and featuring maritime heritage is the latest addition to Aberdeenshire’s Coastal Trail guide. The Maggie Law Maritime Museum sits beside the old harbour and slipway in the centre of Gourdon. The Maggie Law was one of the first inshore lifeboats, built in 1890 and rowed by six men; she was in service for 40 years and saved 36 lives. The museum in her name caters for all ages and is a new addition to the guide, which contains details of the 165-mile signposted scenic trail. www.visitscotland.com/coastaltrail

NEW CASTLE ADDED TO ABERDEENSHIRE TRAIL Sixteenth century Kinnaird Head Castle and the adjacent Wine Tower at Fraserburgh are two of the best preserved structures of the ancient ‘nine castles of the knuckle’ situated along the Buchan coast. Once described as ‘Manhattan with mountains’ by The New York Times, Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Kuoni Aberdeen recommends visiting in summer to make the most of the thriving foodie scene, surprising beaches and utterly gob-smacking wildlife. Vancouver is one of the best bases in the world for whale watching. Between the city skyline and Vancouver Island, the Strait of Georgia is home to resident pods of nearly 100 orcas. From March to October, thousands of whales migrate through these waters, including humpback, minke and grey whales. Bring your binoculars to catch a close-up glimpse of tufted puffins and bald eagles; and spot bow-rising porpoises, sealions and seals. From May to October, you could catch
the southern resident orcas feeding on migrating salmon; or the northern resident orcas feeding in the Johnstone Strait during the late summer months. There are a few ways (and angles) to potentially see these behemoth marine mammals - and our favourites are by boat or seaplane. While you scan the water for movement, keep your camera close and don’t overlook the impressive warm up acts, from dolphins to otters, while you wait to see if the major star will make an appearance.

Aberdeen’s Art Gallery has spent over a year under a shroud of scaffolding and wraps while undergoing a transformation that will see a reborn gallery open in November 2017. The new gallery will feature 21 exhibition spaces and we’re promised that we’ll have one of the best regional galleries in the world, showcasing some of city’s best known paintings and providing a new space for music. During the early stages of the refurbishment project, almost a hundred skeletons were found during an archaeological exploration of the site, which was home of a Dominican friary of the Black Friars, still commemorated in the name of a pub on the Castlegate. Some of the remains will be reconstructed and displayed in the new gallery as part of a display showing aspects of life in medieval Aberdeen. Two thirds of the £30 million needed for refurbishment have been provided by the Council and
the Heritage Lottery Fund, in addition to a £250,000 grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation. The people of Aberdeen will be invited to contribute the remainder via a massive fundraising campaign, which will see donors digitally acknowledged and the names of those donating in excess of £2,500 etched into the glass of the new balcony. Even though the gallery is closed, it is still possible to view some of the works at Drum Castle, just ten miles away and at the city’s new Collections Centre in Northfield, where some of the 180,000 art and museum artefacts will be held and displayed. The new gallery and Collections Centre are at the heart of the council’s hopes to bring art and culture to a wider spectrum of the people, allowing more works to be seen and studied.
For those wishing to donate visit: www.aagm.co.uk or call 01224 523670. Donations can also be made by texting AAGM001 to 70970 to donate £5, and AAGM001 to 70191 to donate £10.

Aberdeen’s Lyric Musical Society prepare to take the stage with a new production
For the past 64 years, the Lyric Musical Society has been delighting audiences across the North-east with their fabulous musical theatre shows. Productions rival professional shows thanks to a host of superbly talented amateur performers and a backstage crew that brings the song and dance spectaculars to life! Chairman Colin Pike enthused, 'We have a tremendous number of very talented people in the company, from 18 to almost 80. There’s a very special bond between the whole team and we all work hard to make a great show - whilst at the same time having plenty of fun! The fact that the Lyric has been around for so long is testament to the commitment of everyone involved as a member, office-bearer or production team member, over the years. It’s part of Aberdeen’s history. 'During this time, the Lyric has been instrumental in bringing high quality musical theatre productions to the city and we’re really excited about our production of ‘Made in Dagenham’ which will be on at HMT from August 24th to 27th.
'It’ll be the first time this brilliant new musical has been performed in Aberdeen, though readers will probably be familiar with the hit film it is based on. It’s got fantastic musical numbers and a really funny script. The story is about the women working in the Ford Dagenham plant in 1968, who went on strike in order to try and achieve equal pay. 'We’re always keen to hear from people who’d like to join the Lyric Society, whether they’d prefer to be on stage or part of the production crew. You can contact our Secretary, Ronnie Murdoch at secretarylyricmusicalsociety@gmail.com'. Tickets to Made in Dagenham are available from the Box Office on Union Street or www.aberdeenperformingarts.com with prices from £24-£30.
Mark it in your diaries now‌Trend and Premiere Productions will be bringing you the most fabulous fashion straight from the catwalk on Thursday 27th October at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen. No fighting over who gets to sit on the Front Row now!

Colin North became fascinated by the guitar in his early teens, starting out with small repairs to his own guitars before improving friends’ instruments and rebuilding others. After a long career offshore, he learned how to build his own acoustic guitar on a course in Sweden with an established luthier. Now retired, he builds guitars in his workshop, fulfilling commissions and making around six new instruments each year, which are in high demand from musicians. 'As a maker, I tend to be obsessive about tiny details other people don’t even seem to notice and will never even see', Colin admitted, 'I try to create an instrument that is so easy to play that it becomes "transparent" or unnoticed by the player. Someone trying one of my instruments said that it felt as if it was playing him, rather than him playing the guitar. That’s large part of what I’m aiming to achieve. 'I rarely have guitars in stock. They seem to either be commissioned or bought very quickly. I work closely with the client as they have input on almost every aspect of the design process. We meet and discuss their music and tunings, their preferred woods, tuners, body style, neck profile and the sound they’re looking for. Normally, my customers know what body shapes and size of guitar they want. I really need to see them playing as the instrument’s action and intonation is tailored to the way the individual plays, their style and technique. Each guitar is different and commissioning one is a very personal process. 'Once the specification has been agreed, it takes me around eight weeks to make a guitar, starting with selecting the woods
for the quality of the cut and appearance. I then lay out all the woods and other parts to see how they work together. The sides are bent using heat and moisture and then shaped in a mould before fitting the neck and tail blocks to hold them together. A strip of wood is glued around the edges to increase gluing area for the back and top. The back and top halves are jointed and braced, then fitted to the sides, before I cut and shape the neck. Then I assemble the two pieces, fit the bridge, nut, saddle and mount the tuning heads. I set up the action and intonation before finishing with a water-based lacquer for looks, protection, and sonic transparency. 'For soundboards I normally use spruce, and stock Sitka, Lutz, German, and Adirondack plus a few others. All can make a fine guitar. For the back and sides, my favourite woods are East Indian Rosewood, Walnut, Satinwood and Bubinga, but I have also stock Zebrano, Wenge, Cocobolo, Mahogany and Sapele. The best way to get in touch about a commission is just to give me a call and arrange to come out to my workshop near Inverurie. I’ll also be showing at the North East Open Studios venue at Durn Hill Farm near Portsoy, with the lovely and talented ceramicist Kerstin Gren and other friends. Details of all the exhibitors will be available on www.northeastopenstudios. co.uk once finalised. I will have some of my early guitars, and hopefully some of my recent builds on loan, if the owners can part with them for a week or so. 'I’m just so lucky to be doing something I love, and to be able to share it with others.'Colin can be contacted on 07739 660345 or by email at lin.acoustics@gmail.com

While it is undeniable that humans dominate other species on planet Earth, it is interesting to consider how we have managed to achieve this when taking into account just how grossly outnumbered we are. There are more than eight million species of animals on land, in the air and in the seas, and most Homo sapiens are probably familiar with no more than a handful. But a trip to the Aberdeen Zoology Museum will fix that. The Zoology Museum is located in the Zoology building at the University of Aberdeen, just on the outskirts of the campus, and is alive with the preserved remains of creatures great and small. From the skeleton of the Elephas maximus that greets you at the door to the perfectly preserved duck-billed platypus hiding in a corner, there are truly too many animals on display to take everything in during one visit - it’s just as well that admission is free.
Though admittedly a trip to a zoo can make a great day out, there is something quite extraordinary about sitting in the silent company of hundreds of life’s unique beings as they allow you to study their every detail, in some cases from the inside out. The creepy crawlies will haunt your sleep, the feathered critters will melt your heart and, if you are anything like me, the specimens maintained in fluid-filled jars will mesmerise you. Whatever your age, there is something here to capture your imagination. The diversity and complexity of the animal kingdom is a thing to be marvelled at, particularly as so much of that diversity is today under threat. As the main source of that threat, maybe the best thing that human beings can do is to study and learn as much as we can, before it is too late. The Aberdeen Zoology Museum is a great place to do just that. www.abdn.ac.uk

No one really enjoys being tricked, so why is it that humans have had such a long love affair with magic? Perhaps it is just a matter of perspective - literally. As far back as ancient times, performers have been skilfully employing sleight of hand and other illusory techniques to captivate audiences the world over. And most spectators, from paupers to kings, seem willing to suspend reality, if only for a while, and believe that they are witness to the impossible. The history of magic in the North-east dates back to the early 1800s when John Henry Anderson, dubbed the Great Wizard of the North, took magic off the streets and into the theatres, with eye-popping illusions like the bullet catch. Since then, magicians of all disciplines have made their name in Aberdeen and most have been members of the Aberdeen Magical Society, the oldest group of its kind in Scotland.
After 90 years in existence, the Aberdeen Magical Society is still going strong and will be celebrating with an Anniversary Dinner in October, hosted by current President Garry Seagraves and featuring many former members. A limited number of tickets will be made available to the public. www.aberdeenmagic.com
Founded in 1926, the Aberdeen Magical Society was first run by William Gordon Craigen, a respected and influential magician who ironically split his time between the stage and the court house, as a successful lawyer. In the 90 years since its beginnings only nine others besides Craigen have held the honoured role of Society President, all seeking to preserve a craft which must simultaneously hold true to its past while constantly modernising to assure its future. Today, the Aberdeen Magical Society boasts mentalists, illusionists, balloon artists, comic performers, double acts and even one of Aberdeen’s top female magicians. Some members perform magic as a beloved addition to their day jobs while others have built successful careers out of it, and all have helped make this cherished performance art a regular feature at most events in the city. Beach reads broadly fall into three categories. There’s War and Peace, or whichever worthy classic you’ve been promising yourself you’ll read for years and will never get round to. Then there’s the cookie-cutter soft-centred romance about a nice but rejected woman who opens a little shop/bakery/cafe in a picturesque location and at first overlooks the man who will truly appreciate her, or there’s the modern literary novel which generally disappoints, bewilders and irritates in equal measure. Ditch them all and go old school, and look to vintage crime and period thrillers for a more satisfying sunlounger read.
David York’s THE BILLION POUND QUESTION is a well-crafted thriller that clocks up the air miles as the plot shifts from the UK to China, Hong Kong and West Africa, casting a group of old friends into the world of high finance and drug-smuggling. The plot is fast moving, but the dialogue sometimes feels like the characters are explaining what’s happening, rather than talking to each other.
SERPENTS IN EDEN is a charmingly old-fashioned short story compendium of rural crimes, with dastardly deeds being done in the depths of every hedgerow. You’ll find a selection of Golden Age crime authors and some long-forgotten rediscoveries. Great for dipping into as you sip cocktails by the pool or cosy up in a country cottage.
QUICK CURTAIN by Alan Melville is another rediscovered crime classic from the retro British Library series. A comedic crime caper set in a theatre where life imitates art and the leading man is shot dead on stage. Short but packed with witty dialogue, and wicked side swipes at the culture of the time, it’ll keep you amused for a sunny afternoon or two.
Failing that, you can always pick up the latest James Patterson at the supermarket or in departures. There’s bound to be a new one out most days this summer!

A loafer or driving shoe, a classic boat shoe and a plain white trainer compliment all combinations. Flip flops are optional. A reversible black/brown belt is the perfect accessory.
When planning a holiday we dream of excess. The very thing we try to avoid when packing for it. Beat the additional costs at check-in and the queues at the baggage carousel with a holiday capsule wardrobe. Finally - roll, don’t fold to avoid creases.
A leather or canvas weekend bag is the ideal travelling companion for your capsule wardrobe. It is large enough for a week of clothes but versatile enough to be used as a pool, beach or day bag.

Much as we all adore the little darlings, children can be ever so slightly annoying when it comes to travel. Face it, it’s not much fun being stuck on a long-haul flight while some six year old kicks the back of your seat and deposits their gum in your hair. Still it can’t be easy being stuck in traffic on the M6 somewhere near Birmingham or restrained in a car seat while your parents argue with the SatNav or suffering mysterious ear pains when you’re coming into land. Since sedatives are not an option - unless you take them yourself - we thought we’d explore the best ways of keeping children entertained until your reach your destination. Kindles and tablets can be preloaded with plenty of entertainment and headphones are a blessing. Take some colouring books and pencils, or try My Book of Stories: Write your own Adventures which takes adventures like Peter Pan and Treasure Island and combines them with creative activities to let your kids create their own tales. £9.99 for bookshops or online. Games and puzzles will keep them absorbed and entertained. These are all great when you’re on the move, to play as a family in the evenings or when it’s too hot to take the kids outside.
Dobble is a brilliant little card matching game that comes in a tin and takes just 15 minutes to play. It can be played on a seat back tray or a train table with ease; even the back seat of the car will do. It’s fast and great for kids of six and up, but there are also versions for younger kids. Two to eight players. Around £12 from local toyshops or online. Timeline is more of a challenge for kids of eight or over. This time the cards each show an event and they have to be put in the right order to make the correct timeline. There are various options from General Interest to Inventions, History, Film and even a Star Wars edition. It may be educational, but it feels like fun - until the kids beat you, at least. Price depends on the set chosen, but expect to pay around £12. Lastly, Smart Eggs are pocket sized puzzles that are utterly absorbing. All you have to do is get a wand all the way through the egg’s maze, using the tracks and holes provided. Sounds simple but it reduced our testers to silence for about ten minutes. £5.99 each and suitable for kids of six and up.
chances are that your child needs one too. Be sure to check several months in advance. Similarly, if you’re separated, you might need your ex’s written consent to take your child abroad. It’s worth checking out before you book.
> Children are too young to have mastered
the art of travelling light. Consider sending your luggage on ahead via a specialist baggage courier, then it’ll be waiting for you Alternatively, see if the airline will let you deposit your bags a day early, for an easier transit.
> Research a selection of things to
do in case the weather is bad, or the kids are bored and take it with you. It’s best to have some activities that will suit your kid’s attention span and interests.
If you love animals and always have wanted to get up close to some of the more unusual varieties, then this is the competition for you. We can promise one of the most memorable days of your life when you join the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park team behind the scenes at the Park at Kincraig, near Aviemore. You’ll need to be over 18 and reasonably fit to take up the prize. As well as learning more about the Park’s 32 species of mammals and birds, which range from native species, past and present, to cold climate animals from around the world, such as polar bears and snow leopards, you’ll have far closer access than the Park’s normal visitors. You could spend the day feeding cod liver oil to a polar bear, help the hoofstock keepers with their rounds visiting the Bactrian camels, elk, European bison and Przewalski’s wild horses or providing the troupe of Japanese macaques with new toys. After lunch, you could be feeding the Scottish wildcats, or the Arctic foxes and maybe even helping to train an Amur tiger! There will be plenty of opportunity to find out more about the animals, and the conservation programmes
that the Park takes part in, from the keepers during your day and you can also take pictures, so don’t forget your camera. At the end of your day, you’ll be presented with a certificate and a t-shirt and can then explore the Park for the rest of the day, either visiting the enclosures on the walking trail or following the hoofstock trail in your car. Ever had the feeling you have been a bad boy and been summoned to meet the heidie in his dreaded study? Well, that’s how I felt when I turned up at the Aberdeen University admin building overlooking the glorious playing fields of King’s College to have a chat with Sir Ian Diamond. He has been the principal and vice-chancellor of the university since April 1, 2010, but if ever you wanted to discover the true meaning of the corridors of power, the proud Devonian can supply the answer. After the formalities at front reception, including an absolutely essential visitor permit for your car, you are guided upstairs and told to keep going and going through fire doors to the very end. Lo and behold, you finally reach his spacious multi-purpose room, complete with desk, seated area and a huge table round which, no doubt, manifold discussions take place on how the university is faring and new directions it must take to stay in the top flight of the world’s institutions of higher learning. I am pleased to report that, far from feeling intimidated, I was made to feel quite at ease by Sir Ian, who was knighted for services to social science and higher education in 2013. ‘I was always
good at mathematics,’ he says, ‘and that took me from Torquay Grammar School to the London School of Economics for my BSc in economics and MSc in statistics.’ Then came the summons from a professor whose work he admired to head across the border to Scotland’s oldest university at St. Andrews and acquire a PhD in statistics. At this point, I had to admit maths was my worst subject at school and it took me four attempts to get Lower Maths and scrape a place at Edinburgh University. All too soon, it was time for Sir Ian to take a conference call, no doubt on a matter of great moment for the university which he clearly adores. It was also time for me to retrace my steps back through the fire doors, down the stairs and out into the blazing sunshine, casting a nostalgic eye across the wall to the rugby pitch where the game has been played for more than 140 years.
