lpha Clinic was founded by Mr Thanassi Athanassopoulos. He is one of the country’s most highly qualified and skilled Plastic Surgeons, specialising in facial and breast surgery. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Aberdeen University Medical School. He explained, ‘We’ve been in Aberdeen for just over 18 months, but demand is such that we’re already outgrowing our premises at Albyn Terrace.
ALPHA CLINIC | 5
‘Initially, we will be offering nonsurgical treatments at the new Carden Place clinic, while surgery remains at Albyn Terrace. We’re currently building a new state of the art theatre, recovery area, photography suite, a consulting room and space for our admin team at Carden Place. ‘We expect the transition to the new premises to be completed by the end of June, allowing us to offer surgical procedures and non-surgical aesthetic treatments in probably the most advanced setting in the North of Scotland.’ Managing Director, Leah Athanassopoulos, added, ‘The planning of our new premises has been underway for some time. It’s so exciting to watch it come to life and can’t wait to share it with the North of Scotland. It’s a beautiful, calm space with an emphasis on luxury and great customer care. We have more space, including two treatment rooms where we can offer a number of aesthetic treatments including anti-wrinkle injections, fillers, PRP for face neck, décolletage, hand rejuvenation and hair loss, Dermapen, Ultherapy and Plasma Pen, as well as skincare products.
‘We have added Profhilo to our non-surgical treatment offerings. Profhilo offers one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the market. It addresses facial ageing not just filling lines and wrinkles, but nourishing dermal cells, restoring firmness of the skin and hydrating from the inside out. Profhilo can help boost and hydrate skin, tighten and lift skin, reduce acne scarring, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture and skin tone and stimulate collagen and elastin production. It can be used on the face, neck and parts of the body which often betray the signs of ageing. ‘Our surgical work includes facial, breast and body cosmetic and restorative. We also offer hair transplants and reconstructive surgery, such as scar revision, the removal of skin lesions and restoring the appearance after skin cancers. ‘At Alpha Clinic, we’re committed to ensuring that our clients have the optimal experience and outcome from their initial consultation through to aftercare. It’s very much a bespoke, multi-dimensional approach because each of our clients has different aspirations.
‘We look forward to welcoming you to our new premises and to a more youthful appearance.’ 16 Carden Place, Aberdeen AB10 1FX Tel: 01224 232428 alphaclinic.co.uk

FROM THE
EDITOR Hello again, We’ve decided its spring now. We’re looking forward to a new season and putting the winter, with its storms, power outages and snow, behind us. It feels like time for a new start, all fresh ideas, new flavours, new clothes and new colours. We’ve all been cocooned for too long now, and while we’re not sure we’ll turn out to be beautiful butterflies, we know we’re a bit fed up of being mushy caterpillars, so it’s time to move forwards. So, leap into spring. Rejoice in warmer weather and new opportunities. Head off for a holiday, take a cruise, ride a horse, take a surfing lesson, go camping, join a gym, learn a craft, try a new restaurant, cook a new cuisine, treat yourself to something beautiful, go out for breakfast, do something you’ve never done before, go somewhere new, book tickets for a show, or a Trend event. Indulge yourself. It really doesn’t matter what it is, but we need to start living fuller, richer lives again. We’re here to help you find ways to do just that. Say yes to a more interesting life. Until fairly recently, swimming in Scotland's rivers, lochs and the sea was regarded as a pastime fit only for hearty adventurers, those seeking to blast away a Hogmanay hangover and raise funds for charity, or masochists.
F
or most people, swimming was something that happened in heated indoor pools or holiday beaches and geothermal springs. In the past few years, however, wild swimming has become popular, with groups springing up all over the country. Swimming in open water combines a sense of serenity, adventure and escapism with health benefits, exercise and camaraderie. It’s a total workout, but gentle on the joints since the body is supported in the water. Outdoor swimming can also give a boost to the immune system and reduce inflammation. Mentally, it’s said to be good for reducing stress, anxiety and even improves sleep quality. It’s also a good way to make new friends if you join a wild swimming group. It’s not a solo activity for safety reasons. There are lots of wild swimming groups around, many of which have their own pages on social media. Alternatively, just start a chat with someone coming out of the water. You can also find listings at outdoorswimmingsociety.com/ uk-wild-swimming-groups/ Like most forms of exercise, you need to do a bit of preparation and have some appropriate kit before taking
the plunge. Some people take to the water in wetsuits, while others favour swimming costumes and bathing caps. You’ll need a towel and might want to invest in a dry robe if you become a regular wild swimmer. You’ll need to leave your belongings in the car and to firmly attach your car keys to your wrist or bathing suit If there are other users in the water, particularly boats, surfers and people on jet skis, then a bright orange float that is towed behind you is a sensible precaution. You also need to be prepared for the initial drop in temperature as you submerge yourself in the water. Enthusiasts will describe this as exhilarating, by which they mean shockingly cold. Wild swimming combines the benefits of being in nature with those of swimming and can be done in any body of open water. Given that Aberdeenshire has over 200 kilometres of coast line, as well as pools, rivers, lochs and waterfalls, we have an unrivalled selection of options for wild swimming. If you have an extensive garden, you can even create a wild swimming pool to enjoy the experience without leaving home. The beaches at Cove harbour, Aberdeen, Stonehaven, Collieston, Balmedie, Cruden Bay, Lunan Bay, Findhorn, Cullen an Rosehearty are ideal spots for sea-swimming. There are groups throughout the region, including the Wet Bandits in Aberdeen, who swim at the beach at 6.30 every morning except Sundays. Many local groups, such as Swim Free Aberdeen can be found on Facebook and other social media platforms. Perhaps you could persuade a few friends and start your own group?
Get smart - Mesotherapy without needles Mesotherapy involves injecting a cocktail of vitamins and nutrients directly into the skin’s mesodermal layer, but with our SMARTMeso technology, you can get the results you’re looking for without a single needle! All it takes is 30-45 minutes to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve elasticity and stimulate the production of collagen and new skin cells.

a new face at Andrew Scott Dental Care
A
ndrew Scott Dental welcomes Marina Saura to the team. Marina offers general and cosmetic dentistry as well as special interest in endontics – diagnosing and treating tooth pain and performing root canal treatment. Marina explained, ‘Unlike many children, I really liked going to the clinic and decided I wanted to be a dentist from an early age! ‘People sometimes assume root canal treatment is painful, but with modern technologies and anesthetics, it is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Saving the natural tooth is the best option if possible. Endontic treatment means those teeth can last a lifetime.
‘I’m from Madrid, but have lived here for years. My husband and I realised Aberdeen was a great place to live and raise our family. When I’m not working, I spend time with my friends and family and we love exploring the country. Welcoming Marina to the practice, Andrew Scott said, ‘Marina is a highly experienced dentist with a rare ability to put patients at their ease. She’s a great addition to a great team.’ 15A Victoria Street, AB10 1XB Tel: 01224 806700 Email: info@andrewscottdental.co.uk andrewscottdental.co.uk

Ever wondered whether salon hair products are better than supermarket shampoos? Us too, so we thought we’d ask…
BEAUTY | 17
T
here’s little doubt that, for most of us, our hair looks its best the minute we step out of the salon. As well as being perfectly styled, it tends to be smoother and glossier than anything we can achieve at home, even with a battery of tools and potions. When it comes to price, supermarket brands are often considerably cheaper than the equivalent product bought from a salon, or a salon brand bought from a specialist supplier like Salon Services or Sally Beauty in Aberdeen. Neil Smith at Bloom Salon explained, ‘The main difference tends to be what the ingredients are in the product and or how they are made. A lot of supermarket brands use silicones and parabens. These are relatively cheap ingredients which can damage and dry out the hair. Many salon brands, including the ones we use are silicone and paraben free.’ The House of Hair’s Lorraine Malcolm concurred, saying, ‘The other main difference is the concentration of the key ingredients. A supermarket shampoo is diluted by up to 75% with sulphates and the silicones in conditioners do the same job. You will get a great lather or a shiny finish, but the product will not always deliver the moisture or protein your hair might require. With a salon product you should only use a 50p amount and
work it through your hands to activate the key ingredients. At the House of Hair we use JOICO products from colour to styling. They are really consistent and reliable, and very eco-friendly. Because the active ingredients are more concentrated, a 400ml bottle of their shampoo or conditioner will last up to three months, compared to a month for a supermarket product. It's an investment not an expense. Bloom’s Neil Smith added, ‘It’s also about choosing the right product for your hair. The supermarket or chemist may have a bewildering array of choices but your hairdresser will be able to recommend the right products for you and what your hair and scalp needs. A lot of people confuse the difference between dry and damaged hair or a dry or sensitive scalp, this means they end up using something that won’t give them the results they want. ‘At Bloom, our main hair brand is Davines. They’re big on natural ingredients and sustainability. We love their Liquid Spell which helps build and compact the hair fibres to strengthen the hair and give a fuller look, it’s great for someone with damaged hair and will also add a little volume.’
House of Hair’s Lorraine Malcolm commented, ‘When you’re washing and styling your hair at home, there are some simple rules that will help you achieve a better result.
‘Always shampoo twice, leave conditioner on for a minimum of three minutes and never put heat tools near your hair without heat protection.’ This will ensure you are on the right road to the healthiest hair you can have. ‘Glamtex is a useful product to have in your home hair styling armoury. Glamtex is somewhere between a dry shampoo and a wax. It gives texture and hold on long or short hair. It’s great to help when styling your hair in an up do, for that wolf cut that needs product to give you a more lived in look or for that textured pixie that you want to be able to restyle all day long.’

AGEING IS A FACT OF LIFE LOOKING YOUR AGE ISN’T! Clinetix is a centre of excellence in aesthetic medicine, dedicated to helping you look and feel at your best. The ethos at Clinetix is simple - to be the best and deliver the best care. They have recently opened their latest clinic in Inverurie and are now bringing outstanding aesthetic treatments to the North-East.
C
linetix was founded in 2009 by husband-and-wife team, Dr Simon Ravichandran MBChB MRCS and Dr Emma Ravichandran BDS MFDS, who are widely respected as global leaders in the field of aesthetic medicine, with an outstanding reputation for patient care and safety.
Pioneering Approach to Injectables Clinetix has recently invested in the latest hand-held ultrasound devices. This allows our practitioners to see under your skin prior to carrying out any injectable treatments so: • your treatment plan is tailored to your own unique anatomy • you will get a better aesthetic result, due to precise filler injection points • there is less risk of common side effects, like swelling and bruising • there is less downtime, and • your risk of having complications is also significantly lowered
Ultherapy®: a ‘Daly’ dose of looking great If you would like to turn the clock back on ageing skin but don’t fancy the thought of injectable treatments or needles, then Ultherapy® could be the answer you’re looking for. There are no needles, no toxins, just natural-looking results. Ultherapy® uses revolutionary ultrasound technology to rejuvenate your skin from within by stimulating your body’s own production of collagen and elastin. Celebrity fan, Tess Daly, loved the treatment so much she became the brand ambassador for it. After having Ultherapy®, Tess commented, “You just look well rested and like yourself but on a really good day”. Ultherapy® is the gold standard treatment for non-surgical lifting and skin tightening. It is a completely non-invasive option so there’s no downtime and has been dubbed ‘the lunchtime treatment’ as appointments can be done in an hour (depending on the extent of the area being treated). If you like the sound of Ultherapy® and would like to find out more, visit our website www.clinetix.co.uk or get social @clinetix.

WHERE CRAFTMANSHIP MEETS DESIGN TECHNOLOGY AS A BESPOKE JEWELLER WITH ALMOST FORTY YEARS’ EXPERIENCE, SANDY MENZIES IS RENOWNED FOR HIS CREATIVITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. WHAT’S PERHAPS MORE SURPRISING IS HIS ADOPTION OF THE LATEST DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CREATION OF HIS STUNNING PIECES. ‘I now work almost entirely digitally creating 3D renders on screen to give my customers a “virtual photograph” of their finished design in four different views and even 360o animations. You can see recent work on our website. ‘Once my client is happy with the final design, the CAD file is then sent to my caster to be 3D printed in wax resin then cast in the metal of choice using the lost wax casting method. ‘The software makes it much easier to visualise a design and how it will look in real life. It’s also simple to make changes. Drawings are useful, but many people can’t translate from two dimensions into three. My approach makes it easy to see what you like and make instant tweaks, or alternative versions.
‘The other advantage that CAD offers is that it’s possible to create designs that would be almost impossible to achieve if we worked directly with the metal or even a wax model. Everything is more precise, everything is custom-made. ‘Often, we can reuse stones from heirloom pieces to create something that’s created to the client’s own taste. So many people have jewellery they’ve inherited, or no longer wear, just sitting around in a drawer. You can give a new life to those pieces. We even give full scrap value against precious metals that the customer supplies. Indeed, I’ve done several jobs where the client not only got a new bespoke piece of jewellery but also got money back! Looking good has rarely been more important. Whether it’s a night on the town or a Zoom meeting the morning after, looking after your skin and hair not only makes you look good, but feel good too. It’s probably best to invest in your own skin care products, rather than borrow from your significant other. As well as averting possible strife, it’s also better for your skin, because men’s skin is 25% thicker than that of a woman. Here’s a few ideas worthy of addition to your bathroom cabinet…

SOS Serum
Baldape Parlour’s Cleansers Baldape Parlour have a new range of natural skin-care products specifically for men. There are two cleansers and an exfoliant. They are vegan, made in the UK, have recyclable packaging and are free from artificial fragrances. At just £9.99 each, they are also a bit of a bargain. The grapefruit cleanser is great for normal, tired or combination skin, while the cucumber version is soothing and gentle on sensitive or dry skin. Both are quite creamy and help boost the skin’s moisture levels. 5% of the company’s profits go to environmental charities. baldapeparlour.com
Nobel Isle Whisky & Water Shower & Bath Gel This is the only time we’d advocate having a whisky before breakfast! Nobel Isle’s Whisky and Water Shower and Bath Gel is a subtle and classy blend of aromatic woods, with a hint of smoke and spices. It contains a natural barley extract, which calms the skin and comes from the Balvenie distillery in Dufftown. It’s also suitable for vegans, and paraben-free, SLS-free, gluten-free and cruelty-free. £22 for 250ml, but it goes a long way. Find it at nobelisle.com
Arran Shaving brush & soap Wet shaving may be a bit old-fashioned, but there’s also something meditative about the process of using a hot towel, then lathering up and cultivating your face with a well-honed blade. Arran’s Shave Brush and Shave Stone offer a modern twist on a classic grooming technique. The brush is simply worked into the soap to produce a rich, creamy lather, which is then applied to the skin using small, circular motions. The boar-hair bristles on the shaving brush are gentle enough for all skin types, yet thick enough to provide a brisk exfoliation before shaving. The soap comes in two fragrances, including Machrie, which combines sea salt and rockrose. Brush £22 and Shave Stone and Soap £25 from arran.com
If you’re looking for something calming, but that involves minimal fuss, then the cooling and hydrating SOS Serum may be ideal. It provides rapid relief from the itch of eczema and other dry skin conditions and calms problematic skin. The soothing effect of Wasabi & Burdock Leaf Extracts combined with the cooling sensation from the refined extract of Peppermint, deliver comfort, moisture and protection. They also do some great moisturising sun creams with SPF of up to 50 and a hydrating day cream. The serum is £15 for 50ml from sosserum.co.uk
Osmo X.posed shampoo & conditioner Keeping with a Scottish theme, X.POSED is a new collection of hair care products which balances environmental and social responsibility with high performance. Scottish brand OSMO, have used 97% naturally derived ingredients and packaging that contains 50% post-consumer recycled materials. The basil, mandarin and thymescented shampoo and conditioner are suitable for all hair types and the bottles can be recycled. Again, the products are suitable for vegans and contain no sulphates or parabens. Locally, you can buy it from Salon Services or Sally Beauty, or their websites.

Sometimes, it’s all about the carbs. The smell of oven-warmed bread, the salt-laden flakiness of a buttery, the cool contrasting creaminess of cheesecake and sharp berries, the perfection of patisserie or the gloriously unrestrained sugar rush of icing on a cup cake. Here’s our pick of places to find the North-east’s best baked goods…
FOOD FEATURE | 35
HUNTLY
INVERURIE
Huntly is probably best known for its shortbread, thanks to Dean’s of Huntly. You can sample the recipe at their shop and café just outside the town.
Ritchie’s Bakery are probably the most old school of our picks, having been around since 1933. Pre-pandemic, they baked in Keith and sold via their store in Inverurie, but now offer home delivery and online ordering. We like their inventive muffins, including a Bakewell muffin and a Lemon Meringue version and their retro cakes.
Our pick, however, is The Larder on Gordon Street. It’s a takeaway only service, offering sandwiches and typical lunchtime fare. They make our list because of their cheesecakes and tray bakes, which often combine confectionary toppings and a generous approach to portion sizes. If a Crème Egg Cheesecake or a Ferrero Rocher Millionaire’s Shortbread that you need to unhinge your jaw to bite through, appeal, then this is the place!
NEWBURGH & ELLON Vegans have often been a bit short-changed when it comes to bakery products. If eggs, butter and cream are off the menu, then a bit of inventiveness is called for. Newburgh’s Vegan Bay is both unusual and exceptional in their offerings. They do a yummy cinnamon bun and some great scones, but, more importantly, they have created vegan butteries that we think easily rival, if not better, the traditional version. We know that’ll be considered blasphemous in some quarters, but they are seriously good. If you can’t make it to Newburgh, then you can order for home delivery or catch Vegan Bay at several farmers markets in the shire, but get there early because they often sell out. In Ellon, Bakeology with Matt started up when a local chef got interested in artisan bread during lockdown. Since then, the enterprise has grown and you can find their stall at farmers markets and in Myriad, the gift shop. Matt offers lots of little treats, all served with flourish and finesse. Try the doughnut balls with caramel sauce or the chocolate flowerpot cakes. If you want to stick with savoury, there’s a great selection of breads, too.
Almondine, Aberdeen’s West End purveyor of enticing
macarons and patisserie has opened a second branch in Inverurie. You’ll find it on Burn Lane. Everything looks perfect and the main difficulty is choosing what to plump for. The Hazelnut Paris-Breast has its fans as does the Chocolate and Pecan Brownie. If you’re veggie, vegan, kosher or halal, avoid anything with a mirror glaze. Online ordering is available if you’d rather eat at home.
STONEHAVEN AREA The Cool Gourmet is located on Stonehaven’s High
Street, on the way down to the harbour. As well as being a tea room, they have a selection of freshly baked goods each day. They’re known for their scones, with four options available each day including a special cheese and Stornoway Black Pudding Scone on Saturdays, with home-made traditional butteries available as a Sunday morning treat. It may seem a little strange to include a butcher on a list of the best places to buy bread and cakes, but Charles McHardy’s home made Triple Chocolate Brownies, combining crusty outsides with oozing centres are probably the best in the shire.

ABERDEEN The Breadmaker at the foot of Rosemount Viaduct can be credited with
bringing back artisan bread to the city. This social enterprise provides training and makes some of the best bread you’ll taste in Scotland. They do a good ciabatta and an outstanding spelt and honey loaf, a gluten-free loaf and their signature Rosemount Brownie Loaf, which uses six different grains. Great for muffins, pancakes and tray bakes too, and they do a delicious strawberry tart in the summertime. Blackbird Bakery specialise in made to order cakes. They have an extensive
range of options on their Facebook page that can be ordered for collection. Facebook always has their latest opening hours and previews of the latest designs. Generally you’ll need to order about three days before you want your cake to be ready for collection. If you’d prefer some of their scrummy cupcakes, you can order in the morning and collect later in the day. Cove’s The Cupcake Stop has just opened a second branch in Chapelton. Check their Facebook page for current opening times. They do some delicious themed cupcakes and cookie cakes and some rather indulgent munchie boxes. They offer special orders and celebration cakes, but require a couple of weeks’ notice. O’Caykx can be found at the City South business park at Portlethen. They
specialise in epic birthday, celebration and wedding cakes that combine outstanding design and great flavour. You can also order corporate branded cupcakes and they often have classes for both adults and children, holiday cupcake camps and group workshops. La Gourmandaise, probably better known as the French Patisserie on Thistle
Street, has been in the city for over 20 years. In all that time, no-one else comes close when it comes to producing the perfect baguette. You’ll also find croissants, pain au chocolat and some superb breakfast pastries and a wonderful selection of individual and multi-portion fruit tarts and cute little quiches.

FRA SERBURGH Cakerella Cakery, in the town’s High Street, not only has a great name, but a great
reputation for amazing celebration cakes as well as cupcakes and fancy pieces galore. Lana Lou’s Cake Studio is further along the High Street. Owner Alanna studied
mechanical engineering, but with the arrival of her nephews became, ‘Auntie Alanna who bakes cakes’. Now she creates astounding cakes for birthdays, weddings and special events and also makes cupcakes, brownies, treat boxes and cake pizzas to order.
BALLATER AREA You’ll find Highlander’s Bakehouse out at Crathie just down the road from Balmoral. We have no idea if Charles and Camilla pop in for a Nutella Croissant or one of Highlander’s Sweet Swirls filled with raspberry or lemon, but we could well understand if they did. You can also order online for collection. Crannach Bakery are also out in Deeside. You’ll find them at Riverside Cottage Café
in Cambus O’May. They are best known for their rustic breads and can often be found at various farmers markets in the region. They also do some charming little mini-cakes, hearty flapjacks, scones and brownies as well as offering classes in bread making.
OLDMELDRUM Moll's Lil Bakery specialises in indulgent cookies, topped with confectionery. You’ll
find everything from Crème Eggs, Oreos and Biscoff to a Caramel Freddo atop gooey sauces and frostings. Mixed boxes are available for order from her Facebook page. Delivery is available to Oldmeldrum, Pitmedden, Newmachar, Inverurie, Kintore, Blackburn, Aberdeen and surrounding areas,

Meet DAVE AMOS,
Ferryhill House Hotel’s new Head Chef
When I was growing up in Peterculter, I spent a lot of time down by the river and roaming in the woods as a child. My love of nature is reflected in my hobbies.

I
love camping with family and growing my own produce in our garden. I even have six rescued battery hens which provide fresh eggs daily. I love to spend time foraging in the wild too and smoking, curing, and preserving my harvest. Art is my other hobby. For me, cooking involves the same sort of creativity. Like many chefs, my interest in food began in the kitchen with my mother and grandmother. My Grandparents lived in Orkney and for a time I worked at the Standing Stones Hotel there. Ferryhill House Hotel always had a good reputation for food and as I live locally, I always thought it would fill me and my family with pride if I could say, ‘I work there’. I wanted to work somewhere that would allow me to utilise my skills using fresh, locally sourced produce and McGinty’s Group is perfect for that. I love big bold flavours, fresh and fragrant. From Mexican cuisine to campfire cooking and big hearty family feasts, I like looking at global dishes and putting a Scottish twist on them.
My daughter has some allergies so I’m always experimenting with dishes that cater for different dietary requirements. I enjoy unusual combinations and trying new ideas. Something that makes our guests say, ‘I’ve not tried that before, but I really want to!’ For example, my new favourite dish is Prosciutto Wrapped Monkfish with Cannellini bean salsa, potato gratin & lemon oil.’ 169 Bon Accord Street, AB11 6UA Tel: 01224 590 847 ferryhillhousehotel.co.uk

GIVE YOUR EVENT THE PERFECT SETTING WITH ADESSO DÉCOR ‘Over the years, we’ve provided décor for some remarkable places and events, from charity lunches to decorating the Royal Yacht Britannia for Christmas.
ADESSO DECOR | 41
‘At Adesso, we consider a lot of different factors when it comes to putting our initial design ideas together. The venue space, the flow of guests, backdrops and focal points, areas for photography and practical aspects like the event décor needing to work with what’s happening during the event, like dancing or having a sit down-meal. The entrance is also really important as we want guests to feel like they are stepping into a different world. ‘For example, these images come from an event we did with Trend last November. Our brief was to create a stunning entrance way and a wall where guests at the Bubbles and Baubles Charity Lunch could have photos taken. The festive décor created an uplifting, festive ambience, with a sophisticated edge and lifted the mood of guest going into the event.
W
e work with both corporate and private clients, so there’s always something new on the go. It might be a romantic engagement party, a wedding reception venue, a special anniversary, birthday or retirement do, or a corporate milestone celebration,’ Adesso’s owner, Charlotte Garvie, explained. ‘Whether it’s a huge event, or a small private party, every client benefits from the same attention to detail. We strive for perfection! ‘Every client is different, each has a different reason for celebrating and a different vision of what they want their event to look like. It’s our job to make the venue magical. Some people like to start with a colour scheme, while others may have seen our work at a previous event, or have a theme in mind, such as a Victorian Christmas, or an Alice in Wonderland themed wedding. Some clients may even have assembled a mood board, while others may have a clearer idea on what they don’t want. We love working closely with our clients to help realise their dream look for a venue.
‘People often think that using an event decorator like Adesso must be very expensive. That’s not necessarily the case. We work with a huge range of budgets and know how to create something special without spending a fortune. We’re happy to offer an initial consultation without any obligation. Just get in touch.’ Unit 4C, Burn O’Bennie Road, Banchory AB31 5NL E: Charlotte@adessodecor.com adessodecor.com

EDINBURGH W EEK EN D ER
When it comes to capital cities for a weekend break, we often overlook Edinburgh in favour of London, Paris or Rome. In truth, there’s much more to Edinburgh than a castle and entire streets of shops selling dodgy tartan souvenirs....
I
f the weather’s fine, you could start your day and work up an appetite for breakfast by climbing Arthur’s Seat, the dormant volcano outcrop in Holyrood Park. It’s one of four hill forts dating from around 2000 years ago and offers some great views over the city. The park abounds with wildlife and also provides an oasis of solitude away from the bustle of the capital. If you’d prefer to do your climbing indoors, try the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho. EICA is Europe’s largest indoor climbing centre and alongside world-class climbing walls, features a bouldering room and a gym overlooking the main arena. If a stroll by the waterside appeals more, head down to the dockside at Leith’s Ocean Terminal where you can find the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Queen’s former floating palace has been consistently rated as the country’s top attraction for over a decade. It’s fascinating to see round the vessel which made over a thousand official trips over 40 years of use. All five decks are surprising accessible to those in wheelchairs or with buggies.

Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden has been an oasis of calm in the city centre since 1670. AT the moment, the glass houses are closed for restoration, but with 72 acres of ground to explore, there’s always something worth seeing. Edinburgh has always had a peculiarly macabre side and some of the city’s most fascinating attractions reflect this. The award-winning Surgeons' Hall Museums is home to probably the largest and most historic pathology collections in the United Kingdom. The collection represents the changing nature of medical and scientific teaching and research since the late 18th century and it is worth noting that the specimens were collected at times that held
different ethical and moral values from our own today. Continuing the macabre theme, The Real Mary King’s Close lies hidden under the Royal Mile. It’s a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned. You can also visit a section of Edinburgh’s legendary Underground City, where a population once lived in utter misery as part of a storytelling tour that combines history and spookiness. If that’s all a bit too scary, then try a visit to Edinburgh Zoo and see if the giant pandas are up to anything interesting.
WHERE TO STAY As you might expect from the country’s main tourist city, Edinburgh has a huge variety of places to stay, from the basic to the opulent. The impact of the pandemic means fewer foreign guests, so shopping around for your accommodation can turn up some bargains. Tigerlily has long been one of Trend’s favourite places to stay in the capital. It manages to combine great service and style without being fussy or overpriced. There’s a great cocktail bar and a lively restaurant, so it’s a good choice for an action packed weekend break or a trip with friends. The rooms are beautifully designed, yet practical, and it’s well located for the picturesque Dean Village, the Botanic Gardens and the New Johnnie Walker Experience in the old Jenner’s building.
If your tastes run to the gothic, then The Witchery by The Castle should be your pick for a romantic weekend. It’s not a place for minimalists, since each of the nine suites is theatrically decorated. It’s rather like finding yourself in a fairy tale. It’s tucked away in a collection of historic buildings on Castlehill. The Witchery restaurant is all mellow oak-panelling and or there’s the candlelit Secret Garden if the weather is fine.
The Market Street Hotel is one of Edinburgh's newest urban escapes, positioned right next to the City Art Centre and just opposite Waverley Station. It feels more like a creative and exciting members’ club rather than a hotel, with friendly staff and beds so comfortable you may be tempted to try and sneak the mattress home with you. Nor’Loft, the roof-top champagne bar has a wide-ranging selection of fizz from big names and independent growers. Many are available

EATING Edinburgh is probably Scotland’s best city for foodies, with cuisines from every corner of the planet. Quinn’s Café is known for their haggis and veggie haggis, while Salt Café is the perfect breakfast spot, with a great Eggs Benedict. GF Café specialise in gluten free dishes that don’t sacrifice anything in the way of taste or texture. You’ll find some great pizza and pasta here. If you fancy something more substantial, try Makars on Bank Street near the Mound, which has made an art form of potato-based cuisine. They’re great for veggie and vegan options, but carnivores will be happy with options like their slow cooked shoulder of Aberdeen Angus with horseradish gravy. Spice it up at Prana Indian Grill with their multi-dish tasting menu, or try their take on a full cooked breakfast or afternoon tea with cocktails. by the glass, so you can spend the evening finding a new favourite. They also have a tempting array of small plates and sharing platters as well as views out over the city. If you prefer the less formal option of an apartment, then the Linton Collection has some of the best serviced flats and studios in the city. Their North Bridge apartments, Lord Lyon’s Chambers and The West Wing all feature a range of one and two bedroom properties with contemporary interiors all housed in the iconic Scotsman building, or you could go for one of their Blackfriars Lofts in a Victorian church just off the Royal Mile. If you’re feeling peckish book an amazing grazing platter or box from Crunch Platters via the Linton collection website or book direct with crunchplatters.co.uk.
Fingal is the TripAdvisor’s top choice for places to stay in Edinburgh. It certainly ticks all the boxes if you’re looking for somewhere truly special. The former Northern Lighthouse Board ship has undergone a huge £5 million refurbishment and has emerged as a stunningly luxurious floating hotel. There are 23 cabins including the Skerryvore Suite with extensive outdoor space to relax and entertain. Check out our competition to win a stay on Fingal in this issue.
If you’re looking for something at the Michelin end of the market, you’ll find both Kitchin and Martin Wishart down in Leith, or you could try Condita on Salisbury place, for an intimate fine dining experience. It’s not one to choose if you’re vegetarian, vegan or have dietary restrictions as they offer a surprise tasting menu that doesn’t offer any choice. Reservations are essential and the restaurant is only open from Tuesday to Saturday in the evenings. The experience is £100 per person, with an extra £65 each for paired wines and takes around three hours. For something less formal, try The Pitt, Leith’s street food market which is open during the evenings from Friday to Sunday. You’ll find unusual options like pheasant burgers or steaks with gremolata, as well as desserts from Spot.
SHOPPING Edinburgh offers plenty of shopping opportunities if you’re looking for something a bit more upscale or specialised than the typical shopping centres and a souvenir snow globe of the castle.
Multrees Walk
Head for Multrees Walk near St. Andrews Square where you’ll find an outstanding selection of designer stores including Boss, Burberry, Johnston’s of Elgin, Coach, Max Mara, Reiss and Swarovski. They also have Michael Kors, Canada Goose, Bravissimo and a Caffé Nero if you need a rest to recover from your spending splurge, before heading to Louis Vuitton. As well as designer megabrands, Multrees Walk is also home to Strathberry’s minimalist handcrafted leather goods, which are designed in Edinburgh and artisan crafted in Spain. At number 10, you’ll find Oliami, a treasure house of independent brands that bridge country and town living, including Holland Cooper, Fairfax and Favor, and Marco Moreo. If you’re still looking for designer treats, then head to Harvey Nicks. You’ll find four floors of elegant international and contemporary designer clothing for men and women, shoes and accessories. The perfumery section, accessories, beauty hall and food hall are always worth a visit, though the shoe department is smaller than we’d like. If you’re doing some serious shopping, then consider pre-booking a session with a personal shopper. You’ll also find a TK Maxx just round the corner on South David Street if you like your designers with a discount!
Victoria Street
Edinburgh is a great city if you’re shopping for art. In some areas like Stockbridge, it feels like every second shop is a gallery. Spending an afternoon browsing and popping in local cafes for a snack or two is always a pleasure. Try The Open Eye Gallery on Abercromby Place for a good selection of contemporary Scottish artists, or visit
Dovecote Studios for demonstrations of tapestry weaving. Dovecot has been on the go for 110 years and is renowned for their collaborations with international artists. There’s a good gallery shop and even a café on site. You’ll find it at 10 Infirmary Street. The capital is also home to a selection of wonderfully quirky speciality shops. Our favourites include Mackenzie Leather on St. Mary’s Street who create handmade luxury leather goods bags, briefcases and sporrans and Mr. Wood’s Fossils down in the Grassmarket. Where you can pick up anything from amethyst geodes to dinosaur bones and meteorites. Joseph Bonnar Antique and Period Jewellery on Thistle Street is a cornucopia of exquisite, expensive, shiny things with amazingly knowledgeable staff. Bibliophiles will happily get lost in Armchair Books at 72-74 West Port, above the Grassmarket. It feels like the shelves go on for miles, which is strange because the shop itself isn’t that big. Robert Graham 1874 stocks a fantastic range of whisky, cigars, pipes, spirits and Scottish gifts on Rose Street, which was once known for the Rose Street 22 pub crawl. These days the pubs are fewer, but still a great option for a night of bar hopping.

Camphill School launches £10 million appeal to expand vital services to young people with learning disabilities Camphill School Aberdeen which provides day and residential support to 95 children and young people with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs has launched an ambitious campaign to raise £10 million over the next 10 years to enable it to expand its vital services to more youngsters in the region. The charity, which has been operating for over 80 years has seen an unprecedented increase in demand for its services in recent years, with the pandemic putting families under increased strain. It is hoped that funding can be obtained for a new £3 million, 11-bedroom house, with independent living wing. The home will enable the charity to open its doors to more vulnerable young people

arly-flowering bulbs are a joy to behold because they signal the end of winter and the coming of spring, bringing with them the hope of light and warmth. They are easy to grow and incredibly versatile, offering quick results. They are a great way to start gardening with kids and can be planted in containers, borders or in the grass. Generally bulbs need well drained soil that doesn’t become waterlogged in winter. Planting depths vary depending on their size and species, but ‘rule of thumb’ is that most bulbs can be planted at approximately 3 times their own height. Growing in containers is space-saving and gives portable colour. Your pot should have drainage holes and cover these with gravel or broken pots or crockery. Use a good quality general purpose compost and mix in a generous handful of grit/sand to improve drainage. The bulb packet will tell you all you need to know about planting, positioning and when you can expect flowers. Water regularly as they begin to grow and once the foliage begins to die back you can gradually reduce watering. This is such a satisfying thing to do with children because of the speed with which you see growth. Sometimes people find their garden is dull and uninteresting during the winter. Perhaps we are inside more and the days are shorter, we just don’t notice the wonders that are creating interest, form and scent in our gardens. Bulbs are not the only way to welcome spring with colour. Viburnum Tinus begins flowering in October and lasts through to spring and Helleborus Orientalis, which has the prettiest of pink-tinged, cream blooms until April. The evergreen, variegated Skimmia ‘Magic Marlot’ will grow in partial shade and flowers the entire year but the clusters of dome-shaped cream, flower buds
change to red in winter becoming white, highly fragrant flowers in spring. Viburnum bodnantense flowers through the winter and will continue well into spring when it comes into leaf by which time all the Pieris will have come into flower followed by Rhododendrons and Azaleas as the garden really comes to life. The red or green stems of the dogwoods (Cornus), the interesting shapes of contorted hazel (Corylus) or the texture and form of topiary such as Box spirals, conifers or Bay tree lollipop forms, can cut a dash in the garden planted either in the ground or in containers as a feature or focal point. So how will our gardens shape up as the gardening season starts? After the stresses and strains of the pandemic we all need colour in our lives! Planting schemes are moving away from the tasteful pastels and muted colours that have been in vogue for the past decade towards something much bolder and enlivening. The over-arching trend this year will be the movement towards wildlife-friendly, plant-led gardens that enable everyone to do their bit for the environment. Climate change brings more understanding of the need for biodiversity, so planting schemes are likely to be designed more for pollinators than human beings. Here are my picks for long-flowering (July – Sept) and joyous, vibrant colour combinations that ensure happy bees and insects. Red Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Fat Domino’, planted with Echinacea ‘Sombrero Hot Coral’, add in the incredibly long-lowering Lysimachia atropurpurea ‘Beaujolais,’ (which flowers from May to Sept!) and compliment the arrangement with the deep purple of Salvia Amistad and the vibrancy of Rudbeckia hirta ‘Cappuccino’ then cool it down with Achillea millefolium ‘Lilac Beauty’ and Thalictrum delavayi. Happy Gardening!

Choochie Coo: Better baby gifts

per & Grey Cop
As a nation, we spend over £422 million a year on gifts for new babies, with men spending around £52 per baby, compare to women’s more modest £32. When it comes to clothes, there’s a temptation to go with designer labels. Babies grow so quickly, so expensive clothes become obsolete just as quickly as cheaper ones. That cute little Gucci outfit will look a lot less appealing when it’s covered in baby vomit or something even worse. Stick with well-made, practical outfits that don’t break the bank.
Cards & Gif .18 ts No
Don’t limit yourself to clothes in the smallest sizes, either. So many people buy tiny outfits that look cute, but have little chance of being worn more than a couple of times before the child has outgrown them. When the child reaches 18 months, many parents suddenly discover that their child’s wardrobe no longer contains anything that fits. Talking of wardrobes, you might want to consider gifting a set of child-sized clothes hangers as part of your gift. It’s not the most glamorous gift, but it’s something that often gets overlooked when the piles of presents arrive.
This seems to be the season for having babies, so we’ve rounded up some advice & ideas for the best baby gifts…
Neutral colours and organic fabrics can work well as not all parents want to dress their new-borns up as pink princesses or dinosaur-loving masculine stereotypes. Obvious logos are best avoided too. Avoid anything that’s scratchy or difficult to fasten or unfasten quickly in the event of a nappy emergency. Clothes aren’t the only option, of course. that are suitable from birth, Copper and Grey for keepsakes and No.18 on Chapel Street for cards and wrap. Unlike clothes, it’s best not to buy toys that the child won’t be able to use for years to come. We understand why you might think that buying that first bike, rocking horse or ride on car would be fun, but few young families have the storage space to spare when the child won’t be able to crawl for months, let alone drive anywhere. Similarly, now’s not the time to add a new puppy or kitten to the household. You can also go with practical presents, but it’s best to check with the parents to see if there’s anything they particularly want or need. So many things can be acquired second hand, or are passed down through family and friends, that your gift may go unused. Keepsakes are another option. Finnies always have a good selection of gifts in silver including moneyboxes, rattles, cutlery and cups. If you’re a close relation, there are gifts that are investments for the child’s future. Once it was traditional to lay down a pipe of port, but you could opt to buy a cask of whisky or some limited edition malts or vintage wines from the year they were born. These should all appreciate in value, or at least provide a very happy birthday when the child is old enough to drink. Similarly, there are various savings products for children that might be worth discussing with your bank or financial advisor or you can buy premium bonds from just £25 each.

Studio 1 Banchory’s social enterprise gallery
T
he gallery was set up as a social enterprise by local development trust Banchory & District Initiatives, with the idea of providing a showcase for local artists and craftspeople. Unlike commercial galleries, which can have commission rates of 50 or 60%, Studio 1 takes just 10% commission.
Studio 1 is a new gallery and shop in the centre of Banchory. The venue opened back in November and is proving popular with shoppers and artists alike. You’ll find Studio 1 on Scott Skinner Square just off the town’s busy High Street, with plenty of parking nearby.
More than twenty five local makers are currently exhibiting. As well as painting, photography, jewellery, ceramics and woodwork, there are soaps and candles for sale, so it’s a good starting point if you’re looking for a gift. Many of the artists accept commissions through the gallery and gift vouchers are available.
The idea for the gallery came from a group of enthusiastic volunteers and developed, with the help of local businesses and the Banchory Development Initiative into a vibrant space where artists and makers can show their work. Studio 1 is managed by Viv Kerridge for BDI. Artists and makers commit to a six month residency in the gallery for a manageable rent and a minimal commission on sales. Since opening, the gallery has seen a continuous increase in footfall and sales and it’s hoped the venue will be busy over the summer months as tourists return to the region. ‘We want to be a hub for local

When talking to the exhibitors, many commented on how difficult it was to find suitable premises. It’s also a great way of discovering some of the North-east’s talented makers in an informal and very accessible space.
artists and artisans and are very proud to be able to offer such fantastic facilities to a wide variety of artists’ Viv Kerridge explained. ‘The idea for the gallery grew out of the monthly summer Arts & Crafts Market held in the square.
Studio 1 is a great concept conceived, established and now sustained by people who have the local community right at the heart of the project. Director Paul Panchaud added, ‘Banchory has a long history of musical and artistic talent. The addition of Studio 1 is a natural progression from the monthly markets and the art trails in the town, cementing Banchory’s place on the Deeside cultural trail.’ studio1banchory
BEHIND THE BUSINESS Husband and wife jewellery designer-makers Jacqui and Duncan Grant discuss working together, their favourite designs and creating jewellery for Viking Jarls and the Royal family…
Jacqui & Duncan Grant of Lava Jewellery Design
I
was born in Shetland and Duncan was brought up in Speyside. We met at Gray’s Art School and we’ve been together ever since. When we graduated, we worked for one of the country’s largest manufacturing jeweller, then moved to a commission jewellers in Aberdeen. We set up Lava Jewellery Design about 10 years ago. We both worked from home when Erika, our daughter, was young, then moved to our present studio and shop in Peterculter when she started school, ‘Jacqui explained.
We both have strong opinions, but having our specific roles helps. Neither of us wanted to look back in 20 years and regret not having worked for ourselves.’ ‘Much of our work is bespoke, either using new materials or creating something meaningful from unused family jewellery. My favourite commission was a channel set ring using diamonds and a new setting which was made from the
‘When we’re not working, we both enjoy going on family walks with our two dogs and spending time outdoors. Jacqui loves crafts and botanical painting and I enjoy heading out on two wheels, martial arts, sea swimming and trail running,’ Duncan added. The pair are widely recognised as being amongst the leading designer makers working in Scotland today. Their past commissions include pieces gifted to Prince Charles, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. They’ve also made jewellery for the Up Helly Aa festival in Shetland, for the Jarl’s Squad and continue to make the Guiser Jarl’s twin brooches presentation shield. Duncan continued, ‘We’re lucky in that our skills dovetail together. Jacqui works with the client on design and I manage the workshop.
carve a wax model as this means the client can see exactly what the piece will look like. Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. I also work directly in metal or we can use CAD if required. It depends on the final design. I supplement traditional techniques by using modern equipment, such as our laser welder, to assist in certain jobs. That said, I think some clients are still amazed when Jacqui comes out with her pencil and sketchbook, but it’s often the best starting point! ‘We’re fortunate in having a lot of knowledge of the industry, which means we can source both coloured stones and diamonds, even when the client wants something relatively unusual or rare. We have a good team behind us too so it’s great to have that support and backup.
wedding ring of the customer’s late husband, a gift to herself at Christmas. Often it’s the stories behind a piece of jewellery that make it so special. It encapsulates so much of what someone means to another person,’ Jacqui said. Duncan explains Lava’s blend of age-old skills and new technology, saying, ‘Traditional skills are at the heart of what we do. Whether we’re working on a new design for the shop or a bespoke piece like an engagement ring, I tend to hand
‘We are often asked if our daughter will want to join the business. She has great design and technical ability. She enjoys going to exhibitions at the shop and Gray’s and once she decided she would like her own mini-exhibition. She was only seven, but raised money for a local charity with work she’d helped to make herself. Currently she has no plans to follow in our footsteps, but previously, she’s assured me that when she takes over the business, she’ll allow us to keep a cabinet for our own work. That’s very reassuring!’
