We’ve done all we can to take all the hard work out of the festive season so you can focus on relaxing and having a good time. Of course, it’s not all about turkey and tinsel. The Winter Village is back and bigger than ever at Broad Street and in the quad at Marischal College. It opens on 16 November and runs throughout December. Expect local food producers and crafters, a funfair and festive food stalls as well as weekend events in Union Terrace Gardens.

The illuminated woodland and garden trail, complete with performers, hot chocolate and marshmallows, a festive gift market and the chance to meet Santa returns to Crathes Castle from 8-24 December. There are plenty of festive events at other NTS properties, such as wreath making sessions, or head up to Dalgatie Castle near Turriff for their Victorian Christmas Weekend. It runs on the last weekend in November and first two weekends in December.

It’s just wouldn’t be the festive season without a visit to a Christmas Fayre, whether it’s at your local primary school or a more upmarket venue. Try Trend’s own Christmas Fayre at the Marcliffe on November 5th from 12-4, with free entry. Exclusively Highlands bring their Christmas Fayre featuring Scottish Goods to Crathes Castle on November 3-5. Alternatively, visit your favourite garden centre, or pop down to The House of Farnell which opens its delightful seasonal Christmas shop near Brechin from November 2 to December 17.

There are plenty of local carol concerts and Christmas sing-a-long events if you can hold a tune. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s annual Christmas Classics concert’s at the Music Hall on December 22, or there’s Grampian Hospitals Christmas Carol Concert on the 12th. For something more secular, try Madness at P&J Live on November 30th or the Abbamania Christmas Party at the Music Hall on December 2.

MEET & GREET PAY SANTA A VISIT It’s Santa’s busiest time of year, but he always finds time to make some appearances locally. He’ll be at the Bon Accord Centre on behalf of Charlie House, may well make an appearance on Deeside Railway’s special Santa train rides, will be popping into Grampian Transport Museum every weekend from 2-24 December making appearances at lots of parties and local events.

ead up to the Cairngorms where you’ll find both the Lecht and Glenshee which offer ski pistes and snowboard runs for all abilities. Glenshee, Scotland’s biggest ski resort, offers disabled facilities and even makes its own snow in the event that the weather is milder than usual.

If cross-country skiing is more your style and you have superstrong thigh muscles, then Huntly’s Nordic roller-skiing centre is worth a visit. It’s Britain's only purpose-built

It’s worth getting a little practice in first so you are not overtaken by fearless four year olds when you hit the slopes. Aberdeen Snow Sports at Garthdee offer group or individual lessons in both skiing and snowboarding, book an open session. Alford’s Ski Centre offers the same facilities on its dry slopes. You can also book sessions with an instructor and there are year-long learn to ski packages available for kids.

all-weather facility for crosscountry skiing and roller skiing, providing tuition at all levels from novice up to recreational skiers. It’s also a great place to pick out new or second-hand skis, boots and bindings. Sledging is great fun and inexpensive compared to many snow sports. You can hurtle down designated areas at Glenshee, or simply head for your nearest park with a decent unwooded hill. Westburn or Duthie Park, Broad Hill at the beach and Balnagask Golf Course in Torry are all popular. Tubing is the dry-slope equivalent of sledding and available at Alford, Huntly and Garthdee, where they even have a travellator to get you back to the top of the hill. The Lynx Arena at the beach offers the chance to go ice

skating or learn to play icehockey. If something gentler appeals, why not give curling ago? You’ll find Curl Aberdeen on Eday Drive, just off the Lang Stracht. The club holds regular sessions where anyone eight or over can try the game for just £4, with all the equipment and instruction included. If high speed exhilaration is more your style, Huskyhaven, near Stonehaven, offer dog sledding with their teams of Siberian Huskies. There are three trail lengths to choose from and seated carts are available for those who can’t handle their own team. Of course the best thing about winter sports is the chance to head indoors to somewhere with a roaring logo fire and mugs of hot chocolate complete with marshmallows and a large piece of cake. After all, you’ve worked up an appetite!

tart a few days ahead of your big night out by getting your skin in great shape. Treat yourself to a Dermaplaning facial. It makes a significant difference to how make up sits on the skin. I always recommend this. If you’re very pale, you might want to consider a spray tan or self-tanner for a healthy glow. Smokey eyes are always in! Teamed with some gorgeous fluffy false lashes, you’re bound to be a knock out! There are different techniques for different eye shapes. If someone has round hooded eyes, the application will be very different to someone with exposed eyelids that are almond shape, but generally the outer corners should always be dark and defined, and the inner corners nice and bright. Blending is your best friend, so ensure you have the proper brushes for a nice diffused finish!

With lashes, it’s really important to ensure they are applied properly and that the inner corners aren’t too close to the tear ducts. This can feel scratchy and cause eyes to water, which in turn will lift the lashes. Always cut the band to size to fit the eye, and carry some spare glue just in case! Good lighting is essential when applying makeup, so find somewhere where you can face the natural light. Keep in mind that you lose 30% of the intensity in photos anyway. That’s why you might also look washed out on Zoom, for example. It’s best to be a little heavier-handed than usual.

The easiest way to do lips is by smiling when applying lip liner. You’ll get a smoother finish. Don't be scared to over line a little, especially round the cupid's bow. Use a gloss for a pretty finish!

I’m sometimes asked how people who don’t wear much makeup can do a five minute party face. If I could do that, I’d be able to retire by 40! Looking good takes time and preparation. If time is of the essence, the main thing you’ll want to focus on is adding some definition to your eyes, by adding some dark shadow on a fine angle liner brush round the lash lines. Always smudge this out so it doesn't look too severe. Add some mascara, bronzer and a colourful lip to take you from day to night.

Event makeup needs to be long-lasting. Nobody wants their lipstick to come off after a cocktail or two, or their false eyelashes becoming detached. With a potential long night ahead, the secret lies not in what you use, but how you use it. Spend a good bit of time on the base, ensuring it’s applied properly using the correct tools. It’s important to use sufficient amount of your products as using too little can cause it to fade quicker or appear patchy.

If you’re still wearing the same makeup look you did five years ago, or five decades ago, then I’d suggest booking a 1:1 lesson with an experienced makeup artist who can tell you exactly what application techniques, processes and products will work best for you. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. We are all so different and our skin, face shape and features change as we age, so out of date techniques can be aging or unflattering!

y love story with Da Vinci started two years ago, when I moved to Aberdeen from my beloved Pisa. I was looking for a restaurant where I could grow professionally and creatively. Da Vinci’s approach to serving fresh, authentic Italian food, sourced locally or from Italy, was the perfect fit. Like any Italian, I owe my cooking skills to the women of my family. Italian family life revolves around food. My mamma and nonna would make the most delicious dishes on Sundays. Even as a child, I wasn’t one for watching in silence, so I started helping. I think I was trying to find a way to express myself and I was drawn to the kitchen environment. If I could choose a word to describe myself, I would go for bongustaio - someone who truly enjoys good food and wine. I’d define my cooking style as, ‘grandma style’. It’s traditional food with my personal touch here and there to make it extra special. I find pure joy in preparing food that I hope people will love and devour quickly – like my grandma. There’s nothing as satisfying as knowing I succeeded in making someone’s evening special with the food I created. I love creating new dishes. I like real food with real taste, in contrast to elaborate and complicated dishes where you don’t have a clue about what you’re eating. My favourite dish on the menu is definitely the Agnello alla Griglia, grilled lamb with a mouth-watering goat cheese sauce and dried apricots – our customers love it too! Despite having a very tiring job, I have a boisterous personality. I need an extra activity to channel all that energy, and boxing is perfect for that. I also enjoy organising trips around the world. A week or two in a warmer climate is something I look forward to, as it the chance to try new cuisines. Last year in Bangkok, I tasted the best dish ever: the Chinese Peking duck. I’m from Tuscany, where we have our own Christmas traditions. We only celebrate at lunch, but lunch can easily go from noon till nine o’clock. I’ll be preparing the dishes I grew up with for my girlfriend - homemade Agnolotti pasta, Polpettone meatloaf, and my grandmother’s special Semifreddo al Torrone, which is a frozen Italian dessert.

Aviemore is the perfect short break destination for anyone with a sense of adventure and love of the outdoors. There’s so much to do, superb scenery and it’s great for families, couples or groups of friends. Aviemore can be reached in a couple of hours drive via the A96, perhaps with a diversion to a Speyside distillery or two. Alternatively, you can give your gearbox a workout on the Braemar route, which includes the challenging Cockbridge to Tomintoul road, so familiar from winter traffic reports. Public transport options include the train or bus via Inverness.

Aviemore is not just a great destination in winter, there’s so much to do in every season. Try quad biking on the Rothiemurchus estate with quadtreksaviemore.com. They’ll even introduce you to some Highland cattle and ride in the river on the way back from your trek. You can also try clay shooting, fishing, pony trekking, archery and even falconry in and around the estate. If you prefer two wheels to four, try In Your Element mountain bike hire (iye. scot) who also run Tree Zone aerial adventures. If you’d like to try paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing or windsurfing, head to Loch Morlich Watersports The less adventurous will find solace in the café, strolling along the loch’s award-winning sandy beach, or taking a trip back in time with afternoon tea on the Strathspey Railway.

The best choice of accommodation comes from Macdonald Hotels (macdonaldhotels. co.uk/aviemore) who have three four star hotels, well-priced restaurants, a championship golf course and some cosy woodland lodges that are perfect for a getaway if you’d rather self-cater or want to bring your dog along. Somehow, Macdonald’s extensive grounds manage to be both in the centre of the village and - simultaneously - right next door to the Craigallachie National Nature Reserve, a birch forest where you can spot buzzards and falcons as well as get a great view of the Cairngorms.

If you’d prefer to get close to nature, then book a hill trek with Cairngorm Reindeer, who have Britain’s only free-roaming herd. At just £22 for a 40 minute walk then the chance to hand feed these beautiful creatures, it’s a bit of a bargain. They also do paddock visits, including the education centre, for £4. You’ll also find the Highland Wildlife Park, home to lynx, tigers, and polar bears just a short drive away at Kincraig.

With Cairngorm and the Lecht close by, naturally Aviemore is popular with skiers and snowboarders. Torville and Dean types can take to the ice at Macdonald’s. Kids will adore Macdonald’s giant pool complete with flumes or a trip to Landmark’s Forest Adventure Park at Carrbridge.

If the area abounds in activities, then the shopping opportunities are not quite so abundant. The main street contains an alternating array of gift shops and outdoor clothing and footwear specialists. If you’re not in the market for fleece or fudge, pop into Walker’s Shortbread for crumbly local deliciousness. The farm shop at

Rothiemurchus is worth a visit, as is Macdonald’s own shopping centre, where you’ll find everything from a deli and homewares to fashion and toys. There’s a Waterstones and a good old-fashioned sweetie shop in the village and it can be worth popping up to the Cairngorm Brewery for a liquid souvenir or two, or you can round off your day with a dram in Macdonald’s Laggan bar or a trip to the on-site cinema. In short, whether you’re looking for a cosy woodland retreat, the chance to exhaust your kids, or an action-packed adventure, Aviemore ticks all the boxes.

e're both Bridge of Don locals and met in 2020,’ Jamie explained. We quickly realised how much we had in common, including how ambitious we both are. Emma is such a creative person and has always been in customer facing roles, while I work offshore and also run part of a local model railway business. My hard working and entrepreneurial qualities combine well with Emma’s skills - this made the perfect match to not only be together as a couple, but to be together in business.’ Emma commented, ‘Thoughts and Crosses started out with me creating cards and small gifts for friends and family to pass the time while Jamie was offshore. I loved doing this and with Jamie’s business experience, we thought it should become a company, so Thoughts and Crosses was launched at the start of 2021. After adding a laser machine to TAC’s inventory this allowed us to enter the wedding and event market creating bespoke welcome signs and table plans. ‘We continued to expand our selection of personalised cards and gifts and grew our collection of rental items. We now have everything from sequin walls, flower walls, neon signs, aisle decor and much more allowing us to be part of people’s special moments at events such

as weddings, parties and baby showers. We are always looking for the next big trend to make your event special.’ Jamie added, ‘One of the most memorable events we were a part of was Trend’s Garden Party this April. We loved discussing ideas with the team and bringing their vision to life. The event was full of pinks and florals using our

as well as creating all our bespoke cards and gifts. We love getting a personalised card request through - we’ve had requests from funny sayings to a friend’s favourite cocktail to feature on their card. Our personal favourite is when we recently created a card for someone to give their surgeon following their mastectomy as a thank you. As you can imagine it was a bit of a cheeky card! ‘The best thing about running Thoughts and Crosses is the community of amazing and loyal customers we have built over the last three years! They are so supportive and keen to see what we do next - without them our business wouldn’t be where it is today. We both agree that the worst thing about running a business with your partner is that you can’t stop talking about it - even when we’re out for dinner we are chatting about the next product launch or the next flower wall to buy! Let’s call it passion? ‘Although we spend most of our time eat, sleep and breathing Thoughts and Crosses, we do try to make sure we have time to enjoy the little things.
