WELCOME

Contributors DONNA MURRAY, PHOTOGRAPHER

The Trend Team always celebrates at this time of year as October marks our birthday. We’re six years old now and we’ve come a long way. In fact, we’ve barely had time to blow the candles out as we been busy moving into our new offices on Holburn Street and settling in. We’re also adding to the services we offer, so if you need design, advertising, events management, marketing or PR services, Trend can take care of it for you. Experience, skills, creativity and proven results – we’ve got it all!

Donna Graduated from Napier University with a BA HONS in Photography and Film in 2006. She then ventured in to Press photography, gaining national recognition for her style. Her love of Travel and photography takes her around the world, winning SWPP Travel photographer of the year 2011. Her other passion is Weddings. ‘The most important thing is to make the couple feel relaxed and to have fun, then you get great wedding photographs’. Donna also takes on Commercial and PR work, covering Oil and Gas events, photographing for Historic Scotland and producing images for many local businesses. Other contributors in this issue... Newsline Scotland, Alison Daniels, Alison Shaw, Peter Mitchell,

Meanwhile, after a few glorious days at the end of September, autumn has crept up on us and hibernation – or at least another five minutes in bed – is starting to appeal. It’s easy to come home and decide that the weather is too miserable and it’s too dark to do anything.

Courtney O’Grady, Stephen Davy-Osbourne, Jan Leatham, Becky McKinley, Clare Findlay and Ryan Swinney. Stylist: Nikki Sheran and Becky McKinlay Hair: Louise Chrystal

Of course, the Trend Team simply ignore the weather and so we’ve been out and about exploring all that is best in this corner of the world. Our fashion team and our first ever cover model have been visiting some of the city’s most famous buildings to celebrate our birthday, and we’ve been talking to local artists, musicians and designers, and pulling together our guide to getting a head start on the Christmas shopping so it’s a pleasure and not a last minute chore. Benjamin Franklin once said that many people die at twenty five and aren’t buried until they are seventy five. He had a point. It’s important not to give in to the temptation to stagnate at this time of year. Head out for a walk, go to the cinema, buy a new coat, try a new restaurant, master a new gadget, take an evening class, take a few days away…do something you’ve never done before. There’s a whole world just waiting for you. Live a little!

Think back to when you were twelve or thirteen, and you were probably always trying out new makeup looks. Remember applying so many layers of mascara you could barely open your eyes, slapping on striped blusher, and layering on so much lipstick and sticky gloss that it would put a drag queen to shame? When did you last sit down and just play with your makeup? A new look could take years off. This season, it’s time to sparkle and shine, so here are some of our favourite products that’ll add gloss and glitter…

Frontcover’s Sparkler set is packed with everything you need to add a little sparkle to your eyes and nails - perfect for practising your party look.

For dazzling digits, Eye Candy 3D nail wraps offer a perfect chip-free finish and no-fuss application in a range of amazing sparkly styles.

If you prefer to use a brush, give invogue’s hi-res glitter lacquers a shot. Guilty Pleasures - a bluey purple gives jeans a glamorous edge and it’s a brilliant budget buy.

Why not try NYX’s roll on shimmers, which you can use to highlight your eyes, or to draw attention to your décolletage. Their website is filled with fabulous finds, like their wonder pencil concealer and curve eyeliner.

After all that playing around, some jet-set skincare is in order. This sleekly packaged serum from uber-exclusive facialist Carol Joy uses golden millet oil and sparkly diamond dust to reveal radiant younger-looking skin.

Even your daily dose of sunscreen can add a little polish. Try wearing Ultrasun’s glimmer formula SPF 20 sensitive skin protection spray under your tinted moisturiser to look bright and alert.

Freeze the fat with

Practically all of us have some areas of our bodies that we’re not too happy with, so when The Aesthetic Room at The House Spa told us about a new non-surgical medical treatment that promised to permanently remove fat cells by freezing, we were keen to explore whether it delivered... Coolsculpting is a proven technology that uses a combination of suction and cold temperatures to kill fat cells, without using surgery or injections. It was developed by two highly regarded doctors at Harvard University. Unlike some other treatments, coolsculpting process is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration which regulates aesthetic and medical treatments and devices in America and involves rigorous safety checks before awarding a pass. Over half a million people have already benefitted from coolsculpting world-wide. Evidence that coolsculpting is proven to work can be found in twenty peer-reviewed clinical studies in US research labs and hospitals. Please note these studies only back Coolsculpting and cannot be transposed to other technologies making the same claims as the coolsculpting device. Our tester explained, ‘The coolsculpting session starts with pictures of the area to be treated being taken from all angles. Another set of photos is taken later so you can compare the results.’

14

fat which is metabolised in the normal way. Many people see results before then, though. I had slight bruising and my tummy was a little tender, but this passed the following day.’

‘I was popped up onto the bed where Louise MackIntosh, who is a qualified Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber, talked me through all aspects of the treatment.’ ‘A cold gel pad is applied and the head of the machine attached to the area being treated and then the suction is started. It feels like your tummy is being sucked into a vacuum cleaner! Then the controlled cooling process begins which kills the fat cells by causing apoptosis, this is natural cell death. The technology only works on fat cells leaving the rest of your cells to function normally with no detrimental effects on them. At first, I thought I’d not be able to cope for an hour, but after eight minutes I was completely numb. It felt a bit strange for a couple of minutes, but that feeling soon passed.’ ‘The treatment takes a minimum of an hour. On completion of the treatment, Louise massaged my tummy as I had a ‘butter stick’ where the solidified fat cells had frozen. My stomach was swollen but I felt ok. The full results of the treatment can take up to 3 months as the dead cells release

Louise added, ‘The coolsculpting machine works by pulling your fat bulge between two cooling plates, holding it in a vacuum. The plates are reduced to the specific temperature where fat cells are vulnerable and die, but the skin, nerves, blood vessels and everything else is completely unaffected.’ ‘After the coolsculpting procedure, you will be the same size, as it takes a few weeks to take effect. Your fat is actually held inside of cells, which enlarge and shrink as you gain and lose weight. During the coolsculpting procedure, about 20- 25% of these fat cells are killed.’ ‘Typically you do not grow the same amount of fat cells as an adult. Comparisons can be drawn between both coolsculpting and liposuction. Coolsculpting removes the complications that surgery or invasive options can inflict. With the coolscultping process almost no-one experiences any pain and there is no need for time off work or downtime.’ ‘It is suitable for treating a variety of areas of the body on both ladies and gents, and is brilliant for muffin-tops, love handles and stubborn tummy fat.’ The Aesthetic Room @ The House Spa 34 Great Western Road, AB10 6PY Phone: 01224 586699 www.coolsculpting.co.uk

PINK JACKET, NEXT

This season’s ‘on trend’ colour could not be any more feminine if it tried – it’s pink! From dusty, rose hues to bold, eye-popping shades, anything goes on the pink spectrum. The great thing about this colour trend is that you can wear it on any item of clothing to any occasion, whether it be in the work place or out for drinks. Soft, pale pinks work well for the office, like this matching blazer and trousers from Zara. And a splash of hot pink is perfect for brightening up any evening wear, like these metallic heels from Dune. Unsure of what other colours you can team your pink outfit with? Take a lead from Christian Dior and Céline by keeping it simple with neutral colours such as grey, white and black. The pink should speak for itself. Alternatively, if you fancy trying something a little daring, clash things up by pairing your pink with red – as done so by Jonathan Saunders on the AW13 catwalk.

PINK SHIRT, MARKS & SPENCER

Don’t worry if the thought of looking too ‘girly’ seems daunting; simply wear a paler tone on a boyish styled item or add in some leather. As said previously, anything goes. PINK METALLIC HEELS, DUNE

itison and Milton Brasserie: How to make deals work for your business.

As the market leading daily deals and events service in Scotland, itison.com works with some of Aberdeen’s best businesses. We speak to Jay Emmerson, owner of the award winning, AA Rosette awarded Milton Brasserie, about how working with itison.com has helped him relaunch the restaurant and widen his customer base. Firstly, tell us a bit more about Milton Brasserie? I bought Milton Brasserie in January this year after more than two years as general manager. I closed the restaurant and undertook an extensive refurbishment before re-opening in February. Since then we’ve been awarded an AA Rosette, came runner up in Grampian Restaurant of the Year and gained a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. It’s been a great year! So, why did you decide to run an itison deal? We wanted to drive more customers to the restaurant during our quieter times and also to remind people that we’re open on Wednesday and Thursday nights, when we used to be closed. I choose to run deals with itison over other deal sites because they’ve got a great reputation among businesses in Aberdeen. And how did you structure your deal to meet your objectives? We structured the deal to ensure we maximised the up-sell to customers, so we offered two main courses and two glasses of Prosecco with a 53% saving. Most people then purchased starters or desserts, coffee, a bottle of wine etc. The average up-spend per voucher was more than £20 which was a great result for us. We’ve also had a lot of return business from our itison customers which we’re delighted with. What advice would you give other businesses considering running an itison deal? > Think about what you want to promote and structure your deal accordingly > Brief your staff and make sure your customers get the best experience > Use the online deal redemption site and take on board the feedback customers give on your business

MUSA

Bananas about Musa > WORDS BY CLARE FINDLAY

Musa - the botanical term for banana - is a contemporary restaurant, owned by BrewDog and tucked away in the city’s Merchant Quarter. Behind the 19th Century Episcopalian church façade, which later served as a banana ripening store, you’ll find a short, but compelling menu devised by Andrew Gray. Dining is offered on two levels, so we opted for an intimate and immaculately set table in the gallery which provided a vista of the busy tables below. Within minutes, we were briefed on how the menu works with beer recommendations for each dish, the choice of dinner specials and a hint that the noise level would rise as the acoustic guitar accompaniment kicks in. As Musa themselves put it, the menu is eclectic and fuses world inspired cuisine with quirky interpretations of Scottish staples. We had a choice of six starter choices and seven entrees – all of which sounded intriguingly tempting. Every dish we tried was exquisitely presented and delicious. 44

Tops for creativity was the starter of Confit Duck Rillette served with Mushroom Ketchup and Garlic Crostinos. Hot Smoked Mackerel came with a Pernod Potato and Crayfish Salad. The Pan Roasted Fillet Steak with Slow Roast Cherry Tomatoes, Black Pudding Dauphinoise served in a Roast Shallot and Green Peppercorn Sauce tasted even better than it looked, while the Pan Fried Sea Bass, teamed with Roast Red Pepper, Basil Risotto, Black Olive and Blushed Tomato Tapenade, was superb. There’s a well thought-out drinks list featuring beers, ciders and wine. To end the meal, we shared a seriously delicious Sticky Toffee Pudding doused in Butterscotch Sauce and Drambuie Ice Cream. With great food, art and music, Musa offers impressive dining with a quirky, fun ambience and all at modest prices. Try it soon. 33 Exchange St, Aberdeen AB11 6PH T: 01224 571771 www.musaaberdeen.com

FOOD REVIEW

APERITIVO

> IMAGES BY WWW.PHOTOGRAPHYBYJOANNE.CO.UK

A taste of Italy What better way to recharge your batteries after a busy week than a delicious meal with great company, and treating yourself before another Monday comes around? Aperitivo is the perfect solution for a little taste of Italy, without heavy baggage charges and a five-hour flight. We sat by the window where we could enjoy what may have been the last rays of summer, amidst the rustic and comforting interior of the restaurant and where the old favourites playing in the background made for the perfect Sunday setting. Aperitivo has an impressive selection of dishes, so choosing four or five proved to be a challenge as the menu ranges from light meals suitable for a quick lunch-hour treat, to decadent-sounding pasta creations perfect for partnering a cheeky bottle of wine. After much deliberation, we decided to unbutton our belts and sample a meze-style array of smaller dishes to share. The meals were served promptly and looked as beautiful as they tasted. The ‘Pesce Spada’, thinly sliced swordfish with olive oil and a citrus dressing was especially delicious. This was followed by the ‘Pane Condito’, Italian sausage meat

with fennel, red wine and tomato ragu on toasted Italian bread, and the ‘Melanzana Al Forna’, baked aubergine with Sicilian tomato sauce, mozzarella, pecorino and fresh herbs proved to be an appetising combination with rich flavours and delicious textures. The highlights of our feast were the ‘Panelle Siciliane’ a basket of Sicilian-style aromatic chick pea fritters, accompanied by the ‘Arancinette Con Formaggio’ breaded and deep-fried risotto balls made with a combination of Italian cheeses and served with a tangy tomato dipping sauce. As a confirmed cheese lover, I had to sample these, and they didn’t disappoint! The dessert menu featured a decadent selection ranging from sweet black cherries and ice cream, to a more adventurous chocolate hazelnut mousse soaked in rum for those who can control themselves during the first course… unlike us! Next time you fancy something Italian, instead of going straight for a pizza, consider giving Aperitivo a visit, where not only can you get the full Italian experience, but you can also leave with enough Italian vocabulary to last at least an hour in Naples. 15 Bon Accord Street, Aberdeen AB11 6EL Tel: 01224 232707 www.aperitivoaberdeen.com

> WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

Morven MacSween was just fifteen when she starred on our first ever cover. Morven’s also starring on our 6th birthday cover, so we found out what she’s been up to for the past six years… ‘I was just fifteen, but already signed up to a London Model Agency, when Trend asked me to be on the cover of the first ever issue. I had just sat my exams at Dyce Academy and the shoot was my first ever magazine cover and the first time I’d worked with Ray Smith, the photographer. I was really nervous, but everyone on the team was so sweet’, Morven explained. ‘After 6th year, I spent my gap year working as a model in London and travelling the world on shoots, before deciding to study Fashion Management and Marketing at RGU. Now I spend the summer modelling in London and the rest of my time studying in Aberdeen. I’m hoping to work in fashion and keep modelling after graduation.’ ‘I’m not sure how many people ever got to see the first edition of Trend, because it was my first magazine cover and my Mum and Nan went round everywhere in the city, snapping them up! They’ll probably do the same this time too!’

CHEF FOCUS ADVERTISEMENTS

La Stella has long been a star on Aberdeen’s dining scene. We headed into the kitchen to find out about new Head Chef Bryan Few… What made you decide to be a chef? I always enjoyed cooking as my mother cooked at home all the time, but becoming a chef was purely accidental as I needed a job after finishing university. Describe your cooking style I have to work harder than most to create new dishes as I’m naturally quite erratic, but the end result usually involves traditional ingredients with a modern twist or garnish. If you invited a famous person to dinner, who would it be, why and what would you eat? Probably Jim Morrison, I read he likes a good sandwich! As a Yorkshire man, I too enjoy a well-crafted sandwich. I’d go with five spiced pulled pork and apricot jam Where do you look for inspiration for ideas? I take inspiration from anywhere and from anything! I was eating a Liquorice Allsort one day and ended up reading the ingredients and deconstructing the elements to make a dessert we have on the menu at La Stella. What is the worst thing about modern restaurant cooking? There’s nothing wrong with modern techniques, the only problem is in the execution. It’s okay to try something new, but unless you have done your homework and can correctly achieve it, don’t put it on a diner’s plate. What do you think about the Aberdeen restaurant scene? How has it evolved in the past few years? There’s very little evolution in the cuisine of Aberdeen, but that’s not through lack of trying. There’s simply not enough people who care to eat adventurously. I’m sure a lot of proprietors and chefs have been rubbing their heads wondering why it simply will not work.

Delishfish may be the city’s newest fish shop, but down to earth owner John Milne is a fifth generation fisherman and fish merchant and the business remains very much a family one. John’s been involved with the industry since his teens and oversees everything from the fish being hand-picked at the quayside market in Peterhead each morning, to wholesaling, processing the fish and even smoking the fish in-house. He has now added his Rose Street shop to his Peterhead store to bring the best of this natural and healthy harvest to Aberdeen. The shop has a far wider range than most fish merchants, with delicacies such as razor clams nestling with crab and scallops. Seabass, skinless and boneless haddock fillets, monkfish tails, halibut, lemon sole and John’s hugely popular hot smoked salmon fill the pristine display cabinets. Behind the counter, trained Thai chef May is happy to advise on how to get the best out of your fish, providing cooking advice and recipe ideas to make the most of the catch of the day. If there’s something you particularly want John can source and supply it within a couple of days and the business also takes internet orders which are delivered the next day. Thanks to the quality and friendly service, the business already has an impressive fan base, with many of the stars of the Trawlermen TV series buying from John in Peterhead and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Blog describing Delishfish’s smoked haddock as the best in the world. Praise doesn’t come much higher than that, though our testers loved Delishfish’s honey roast hot smoked salmon and the lemon sole was deemed so good that fish has now joined meat on the list of things we buy from specialists rather than supermarkets. 52

HOMES & INTERIORS

When it comes to interiors, good design needn’t be stuffy or boring. These quirky pieces combine functionality with a lighter touch that’ll bring a smile to you face even on the gloomiest autumn morning. This season, buy something that makes you smile…

Get your morning routine on the road with this cute campervan toaster from Prezzybox.com at £39.95. Not only will it deliver two perfectly brown slices of organic wholemeal, but it’ll also cheer up the grumpiest member of the household.

Catch up on your reading with one of a selection of literary classics from Spinelessclassics.com. Their clever typographers set out an entire novel on a poster and there’s everything from childhood favourites like Alice in Wonderland or Peter Rabbit to Charles Darwin. Tolstoy’s epic War and Peace may be just the thing for the bathroom if you intend being closeted for some time. Opt for something romantic in the bedroom, like Romeo and Juliet or, depending on the state of your relationship, Othello, The Idiot or perhaps Pride, Prejudice and Zombies.

This cheerful doormat from Dotcomgiftshop.com is perfect for autumn, with its falling leaves and fluffy little fox will give you a warm, fuzzy feeling every time you come home.

No longer just for Wicked Queens, this Joop Steenkamer mirror is etched with a message that tells you how fabulous you’re looking. Well, we can all do with a bit of positive feedback fist thing in the morning. Available from dutchbydesign.com 54

Bouf.com specialises in unusual furniture and home accents. We love this swing dining table by Duffy London, though at almost £8000, eating a takeaway in the nearest playground is a bit cheaper.

Fancy a glass of wine? Then store your bottles in this bright and appealing cactus shaped wine rack from j-me, which is made of painted steel. It costs £95 from www.j-me.com. It’s also the perfect place to keep a tequila collection.

Grandfather clocks are normally so two centuries ago, but Dutch designers Studio Cloggy have brought it bang up to date by reworking the antique shop staple in bright colours and outrageous patterns. We like this blue version, complete with little keepsake drawers, which could bring vibrancy to a dull hall or dining room. Available from www.cloggyclocks.com

Also from Dotcomgistshop.com, this hot water bottle is just the thing for severe cases of man-flu or couch potato afternoons with some old movies and a box of chocs.

A LOCAL CHRISTMAS

Now, there are those who like to do their Christmas shopping on December 24th, secure in the knowledge that their loved ones are probably too polite to tell them where to shove their last-minute treasures from the supermarket shelves or local all-night garage. Who wouldn’t be overjoyed to receive a Dustbuster, new windscreen wipers or a slightly bashed box of Malteasers?

60

For those of us that don’t fancy joining Match.com on Boxing Day, it makes more sense to shop well ahead of Christmas. Not only do you get the best choice, but you can spread the cost and actually take the time to enjoy all the events that make the run up to Christmas so special. Here’s our guide to some of the best festive fairs and places to pick up something special over the next couple of months. You can also check out our online gift guide at www.trendmagazine.co.uk Start your shopping season in Scandinavian style with a trip down to Farnell near Brechin. The House of Farnell offers some fabulous Nordic gifts, decorations and scrummy Danish pastries and hot chocolate in the café. Pop into Jane’s Design in Stonehaven on the way back for a great selection of unusual Christmas decorations, homewares and gifts. Haddo House has a great Christmas Fair on November 2nd and 3rd and Crathes Castle has the Exclusively Highlands Christmas Fair with forty exhibitors on the same dates. If you’re heading to Haddo, make a detour to Formartine’s excellent food hall and restaurant. Don’t miss Delgatie Castle’s Victorian Christmas Fayre on Saturday and Sunday 30th November and 1st December and again the following weekend. Delgatie Castle’s Victorian Christmas weekends are almost as legendary as their award-winning home baking. There’s plenty of activities and local crafts on sale. The castle is near Turriff, so make a road tip of it and head up via Kellockbank

Emporium on the A96 to Baxters in Fochabers. Kellochbank has a wonderful selection if you’re looking for gifts and makes an excellent stopping point if you need a coffee and some cake. Drive on to Brodie Countryfair and Logie Steading near Forres, which has everything from antiques and books to plants and designer knitwear. Auldearn Antiques, near Nairn is also worth a detour if you’re looking for an unusual gift or two. Hampers filled with foodie goodies make great presents for gourmets. Baxters and Brodie Countryfair both have a good selection of options in their food halls, as do many garden centres. Alternatively, you could head for the spice shops on George Street or the Oriental food supermarket on Causewayend to create something more exotic. Fill a bamboo steamer with Japanese specialities or fill a paella pan with Mediterranean goodies – just remember to check the use by dates if you’re buying in advance. If you’d rather buy a ready-made gift box, then for Carluccio’s in Union Square. Their Il Massimo is crammed with everything from pasta, sauces, olive oil, cantucci biscuits, chocs and panettone well as a bottle of Prosecco to finish it off. We

fancy the Meringhe Di Gianduja, even though we can’t pronounce it convincingly. It’s a light meringue base smothered in gianduja and coated in dark chocolate. Yum. While you’re in Union Square, pop down to Hotel Chocolat for some brilliant Christmas treats. We like the filled ministockings, which are a great time saver and their Rather Large Cracker makes a superb centrepiece for the table. At £40, it contains hats, and jokes for 12 people and 40 chocolates; much better than plastic novelties, though you may have a squabble over the extra chocs. Perhaps you could pick up a little treat like their scrummy drinking chocolate to get into a festive mood when you’re wrapping all the presents too. Or maybe a very festive mood with their new Cocoa Gin? It’s never easy to buy for the chaps, but Lakeland on Union Street do a range of brilliant cider and beer making kits. or some new tools, while Alpine Bikes on Holburn Street is a good bet for adults and children’s bikes. Further up Holburn Street, Rosie’s is a social enterprise offering handmade gifts and is often worth a look. Tickets for a concert, opera or play can make great presents, so pop into the Box Office to see what’s coming up. If you’re planning on baking your own Christmas cake or making food gifts, then Lakeland, Hobbycraft and Cake Creations at 68B Countesswells Road will all prove inspirational. Cake Creations stocks the largest range of decorations in Scotland and also offers classes in sugar craft and other cake decorating techniques. It’s also worth popping into eighty -7, the design led gift shop a few doors along, where Helena, ably assisted by her dog Hugo, stocks Scandinavian gifts. In the centre of town, Annie Mo’s is good for decorations, especially of the more rustic type, as is John Lewis and Boots. Ann Summers is a great source for risqué Secret Santa presents, though BHS is safer for the non-risqué type! Jewellery is always a popular gift at Christmas and buying early means you can take more time over your choice in an unhurried atmosphere. Few of us will turn our noses up at something sparkly! gifts for the special person in your life, while Duncan and Jacqui at Peterculter’s Lava Jewellery are superb if you’d like to commission one off jewellery designs. Rox in Union Square specialises in contemporary designs while Just Gems in Cults offers an outstanding selection of gemstones if you want to pop the question or give a gift that will be appreciated forever. McCalls has the best selection of antique jewellery in town, while Pandora’s charms and beads are very popular. Aberdeen Country Fairs will be holding their street market on Saturday December 7, 14 and 21st in addition to the normal monthly fairs on 26th October and 30th November. While you’re there, pop into Nova on Chapel Street or the Art Gallery for the best selection of individual Christmas cards in town and perhaps pick up a gift or two from Nova’s gift or cookware departments or the gallery shop. If you’d prefer to make your own cards and gifts, try Hobbycraft, Holburn Crafts on Broomhill Road or Bead Crazy just round the corner from John Lewis for materials and some great ideas for pre-Christmas craft or present making activities with the kids. There are plenty of free festive events lined up, with the Christmas Lights being switched on around 5.30pm on Sunday 24th November and the town’s Christmas tree, which is donated by the people of Stavanger, being switched on at 7pm on Thursday 28th November. The Nativity Scene in St. Nicholas Kirkyard will be blessed at 12.30 on Monday 2nd December and there are Carol Concerts in Duthie Park’s Winter Gardens on Saturday 21st December at 11am and 2pm. All of which just leaves you to sort out the food and decorate the tree.

itlochry is a glorious town positioned in the heart of Highland Perthshire and cradled in a truly Scottish landscape of mountains, woodland and rivers. When visiting this Victorian village, there is an abundance of activities to choose from – from shopping to outdoor sports to the famous Pitlochry Festival Theatre – but for places to stay, there is really only one clear choice. The Atholl Palace Spa Hotel is hidden from sight as you drive into town, which somehow adds to the impact when this Baronial masterpiece eventually comes into view. As you make your way up the sweeping drive, bordered by meticulously manicured lawns, ponds and gardens, it is easy to imagine what it must be like for the privileged few who live in such splendour. Whether you are looking for a couple’s retreat, a family holiday or a weekend getaway, the Atholl Palace Hotel is the perfect venue. Within the main hotel, there are ninety bedrooms to choose from, each unique and all offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. There is a Manor House for large groups, self-catering lodges and apartments for families, and turret suites for those who really want a taste of palace living. My family and I recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend at the Atholl Palace Hotel, and we found that there were barely enough hours in the day to enjoy everything that was on offer. We took a dip in the pool, navigated the forest walks, perfected our golfing technique on the pitch and putt course, and found our inner Andy Murray on the four tennis courts. We paused only long enough to boost our energy supplies in the delicious Verandah Restaurant. My one regret upon leaving the hotel was that I had not found time to experience the Lavender Spa, which offers healing treatments reminiscent of the hotel’s heritage as a health hydro. On the upside, that gives me a good excuse to go back. Tel: 01796 472 400 www.athollpalace.com

ART

Few graduates manage to make their living as painters straight after leaving art school, but Hannah Beresford is determined to succeed... ‘Ever since I can remember, I wanted to make art. Luckily my family is really supportive of my career choice’, Hannah revealed. ‘Ever since graduating, I’ve been determined to make my living as an artist. I have a part time job to cover the rent and, from the start, I was prepared to live on very little money, because I want to give my full energy and commitment to painting.’ ‘My paintings have been described as ‘H.R. Geiger meets Barbie’. I love popular culture unreservedly, so my work might be inspired by Nicki Minaj’s latest wig or the Aberdeen skyline!’ Unusually, Hannah works in enamel and spray paint. ‘Enamel is a fantastic medium, the luminosity of the colour and glossiness of the finish is perfect for the otherworldliness I try to convey in my work. Spray paint layers beautifully and it’s a lot of fun to use!’ ‘My involvement with the Oil and Glass Gallery has been wonderful for my development as an artist. Shelagh Swanson, the owner, invited me to complete a residency, which became permanent. I’m incredibly lucky to have a space to paint and the support of an enthusiastic gallery.’ ‘Over the next few years I plan to keep going with commissions and work on getting my paintings seen by a wider audience. In the coming year I’d like to create a substantial body of work which would allow me to have a solo show and I want to start exhibiting further afield.’ ‘My style of work is perfect for modern interiors and I’m always happy to work with a client to make sure they have a painting they will love forever.’ www.oilandglass.co.uk www.hannahberesfordart.blogspot.co.uk

MUSIC

If Aberdeen musician Colin Mackay had worn a different T-shirt on stage at the Speyfest Music festival, the chances are his new album of melodic rock with a country flavour would not have been made in Nashville... When Colin’s Sun Studio t-shirt caught the eye of bluegrass legend Craig Duncan as he came off stage, his musical career took off. ‘If I had come off stage five seconds later, I probably wouldn’t have seen him, and he wouldn’t have seen my T-shirt,’ revealed Colin. ‘He saw the shirt and we just got talking and it all went from there.’

Being in Nashville was tremendous, working with the best production, in the best studios with some of the best musicians there are. Craig invited Colin out to Nashville to work with 8 time Grammy Award winning producer Bil VornDick, who has worked a host of stars including Alison Krauss and Bob Dylan. Colin’s new album ‘Do What You Love’, has six self-penned tracks along with four by Mike Reid and Harley Allen. The title track came to Colin just as he left for Nashville. ‘Sometimes that’s when the best tracks get written,’ he said. ‘Within 15 minutes a melody, rhythm and lyrics can come together and you know that you’re onto something. When you’re in the mood to do it, you have to stop everything and just do it otherwise you might lose the moment.’ ‘Being in Nashville was tremendous, working with the best production, in the best studios with some of the best musicians there are. I was very lucky to meet Bil, for him to want to get involved in a project and record with such great musicians,’ Colin enthused. Colin is already hard at work on his next album, which Bil will produce. You can see Colin at Duff House on October 25 and Buckie British Legion on November 23, or listen to Colin’s music through iTunes or www.colinmackaymusic.com 71

DESIGN

Most people associate stained glass with churches, but it can also be used to great effect in modern buildings...

Jennifer-Jane Bayliss first fell in love with stained glass as child sitting in church, but it wasn’t until she had married and had three children of her own that a chance meeting led her to master the art for herself… ‘I became entranced by stained glass when I met a friend through our babysitting circle showed me how to make leaded lights. She’d just come back from America where there was a revival in stained glass making. Before long, I wanted to know how church windows were made and to get to grips with all the processes involved.’ ‘Luckily, my late husband Mike was very supportive, so I went to Oxford to take a course from Paul San Casciani, then to Wales to learn design from some of the leading contemporary stained glass makers.’ ‘In 1985, I started Jennifer-Jane Stained Glass, working from my workshop in Fintray. I started out teaching both at the studio and Aberdeen College, as well as acting as a distributor for materials.’ Jennifer-Jane’s early commissions included work for St. Ninian’s Catholic Church in Inverness and Aberdeen’s Seventh Day Adventist Church. Domestic commissions are an important part of the studios work. ‘Stained Glass goes back a long way. The earliest glass has been found in China although in Europe probably started in France or Germany. Certainly the earliest painted portrait on glass is from 1100 AD and it was discovered in Alsace. We know that leaded glass was used in the UK before this time.’ ‘Most people associate stained glass with churches, but it can also be used to great effect in modern buildings, such as schools, offices and hospitals. Modern technology means that stained glass in now available in a much wider range of colours, textures and effects than was previously the case.’

72

In 2002 Jennifer-Jane was awarded the distinction of ‘Associate Master Glass Painter’, by the British Society of Master Glass Painters, after submitting ten windows in an architectural setting which were juried by the selection committee. Her work can be seen at sites throughout the North East, including the ARI maternity hospital, the new Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, the Sheridan window in Glen Muick Chapel, The Piper Alpha Memorial window in Ferryhill Church and the Angus Memorial Window in Crathie Kirk near Balmoral. She has also been involved in numerous major restoration projects for Historic Scotland and other bodies. ‘Generally speaking, people have an idea of what they want when they commission a piece. It might be a window designed to commemorate an individual or event, or something romantic and decorative. I’ll then research the planned location and the subject and produce some designs. When the client is happy, glass is selected, cut and if required details are painted before firing in the kiln. After this the glass is leaded and from there, the work is installed on site.’ ‘We can offer custom designs in both traditional and modern styles, whether abstract or figurative. We also manufacture traditional leaded lights for front doors, windows, conservatories, cabinets and kitchen units to our own and client’s designs, so there’s something for everyone. The studio is open mostly by appointment, but Jane is available during evenings and weekends. Interested readers can call 01224 791363 to fix up a time.’ ‘For me, there’s nothing to match the feeling you get when the sun streams through a new window that’s just been completed and you know it will bring people happiness for years to come.’

HISTORY

Trinity Hall’s striking façade calls out over the din of the constant pulse of people and traffic on Aberdeen’s Holburn Street and demands that passers-by look up and take notice. The building’s distinct features hint at the rich history that precedes this modern landmark and, in particular, the organisation that occupies it. There is irony in the name Trinity Hall, as this is actually the third incarnation of the building that has always been home to the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen. This trade guild dates back to the 1200s when it was formed to preserve the integrity and quality of the commercial industries that formed Aberdeen’s original business community. Though today it is primarily a charitable and social organisation, the members still hold dear to their hearts the need to preserve the heritage of the city’s oldest crafts. The original Trinity Hall dates back to 1631 and was one of three buildings on Shiprow gifted to the Seven Trades. The second hall was purpose built on Union Street in 1846 when the extension of the railway into Aberdeen sealed the fate of the original building, which was ultimately demolished. This second structure will be familiar to 76

Aberdeen shoppers, as it now marks one of the entrances to the Trinity Centre. In 1964, the current Trinity Hall was erected, away from Union Street’s ever-growing retail boom. This third hall takes many of its magnificent features from its predecessors, including the traceried windows and many original artefacts. Though much has been gained from the technological advancements of the last century, mass production and cheap materials threaten to erase the legacy of skilled craftsmen that once formed the very fabric of our society. Fortunately for Aberdeen, the Seven Incorporated Trades still actively safeguards the history of its member crafts for future generations, and all from a treasured building that stands on a foundation of quality and workmanship.

Having said goodbye to one of the nicest Scottish summers on record, it is a bit disheartening to think of what the winter might have in store for us. Fortunately, I have discovered a place where winter’s arrival is anxiously awaited and the more snow that it brings with it, the better.

Just 38 miles north west of Aberdeen, the Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre sits on the bank of the River Deveron and combines breathtaking scenery with a healthy dose of outdoor activity. As Scotland’s only purpose-built all-weather cross-country skiing facility, Huntly’s Nordic Centre will keep you moving even without snow.

If you have never tried cross-country skiing before, don’t be fooled by the graceful stride and the gentle terrain – this is a high-intensity sport that requires the stamina of running and the balance of gymnastics. During my first lesson on the Centre’s 400 metre all-weather mat, I spent an inordinate amount of effort just staying upright, but once you get the rhythm, there really is no stopping you. Tuition is available for all levels of ability, using the Centre’s classic and downhill mats in the absence of snow. Once the snow is established, you will want to hire your equipment from the Centre and make your way to the high level forest trails in the Clashindarroch Forest, 14 miles away. The Clash, as it’s known to regulars, offers 25 kilometres of pisted trails for both classic and freestyle cross-country skiing. For those looking for a real adrenaline rush, the Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre offers a full range of courses in rollerskiing and is proud to host two of the events in the British Rollerski Series each year. We had some fabulous prizes to give away in the last issue, so here are our bumper crop of winners. Wilma Williamson will be enjoying a weekend at the Atholl Hotel with her guest.

Expect Michelle Lumsden to be perfectly coiffed whenever you see her since she’s won free blow dries for a whole year from Findlays.

With the party season fast approaching, it’s often a good idea to book your beauty and hair appointments well in advance. Leighton Denny has launched his award-winning Sun-Believable spray tans at Union Square’s PURE Spa and we sent our tester to try it out. ‘After removing all traces of product from my skin and changing into less than glamorous paper pants and a hairnet, I was moisturised then sprayed with Sun-Believable from head to toe twice. After just five minutes I could change into loose clothing and allowed to wash the tan off after four hours. The tan was practically odourless and the Leighton Denny body moisturiser had a subtle scent. My tan looked very natural which was brilliant as I have very pale skin.’ ‘I was impressed that the tan lasted around 5 days and came off unnoticeably, without being flaky or patchy.’

Gillian Gibson will be giving her husband a makeover, thanks to TM Lewin and other Union Square retailers. We look forward to seeing the results!

Donna Speed will be off to Edinburgh’s Knight Residence for a special stay.

Kay Grieve and Audrey Wood will both be taking a friend to Slava’s Snowshow at HMT for a great night out. Also looking fabulous are Jennifer Innes, Heather Johnston, Samantha Uniacke, Holly Robertson and Louise Tosh, the winners of our Leighton Denny competition all of whom will be enjoying a spray tan and a goody bag.

Meldrum House Hotel Country Hotel and Golf Course staff were asked at the start of the year as to which charity they should support – and there was the over whelming support for Help For Heroes. The fashion show/afternoon tea, was an ideal event for them to put on, with the resurgence in afternoon tea of late, and the support from the three exhibitors, they could of easily sold the marquee 3 times over. Meldrum House were blessed with Rebecca Currans company from Northsound, and the weather was amazing.

What is Charlie House?

Charlie House is a new, locally based children’s charity established to support children with complex and multiple disabilities and their families in the North-east. By supporting us you will help many local children with chronic or life limiting conditions engage in new activities, make friends and socialise. Our plans for the future include a purpose built, specialist care centre that will be able to provide the children and their families a place to have some fun together.

THE LAST WORD

Mandy Aitchison, it seems, has the whole world in her hands, well at least half of it. The Welsh-born woman’s busy life encompasses a role as human resources director for the Eastern Hemisphere for Forum Energy Technologies (UK). The job is a follow-on to years she spent with Shell until 2003. ‘That was when I decided I wanted to do something to support charities,’ she says, ‘so I started Eden Creative Florists in Aberdeen’s Forest Avenue. Through the business we try to help as many of them as possible as well as children’s sports teams.’ ‘However, my main involvement now is supporting JDRF, the type 1 diabetes charity. It is a global organisation which funds research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. Scotland has the world’s fifth highest incidence of children diagnosed with the condition and I sit on JDRF’s Scottish Development Group which is chaired by Bill Dunnett, of Petrofac.’

Mandy says she is inspired by the commitment and drive of her fellow members of the Development Group. When asked about her own philosophy on life, she told me ‘loving life and people’. She also has a top tip for success in business. ‘Hire people who are passionate about your business and are better than you.’ Meanwhile, look out for more high-powered fundraising inspired by the Development Group. for 2014. Believe it or not, the target is to raise £1million in a single year. Wow! The JDRF Aberdeen Ball is 22nd March 2014 at the Marcliffe Hotel. The JDRF Edinburgh Ball is 7th June 2014 at Prestonfield House. For more information, see www.jdrf.org.uk/events

That entails helping to organise exclusive fundraising events such as the annual JDRF Ball, which has also been replicated in Edinburgh. JDRF’s development manager in Scotland, Alastair Brookes, says: ‘We are hugely grateful for the magnificent efforts made each year in the North-east’. 90
