Editor’s welcome Can you believe its four years since the first ever Trend hit the streets of Aberdeen? Thanks to the support of our readers and advertisers, we’ve grown considerably, adding lots of extra pages and more than tripling our distribution. Trend is your magazine and we love receiving your letters and e-mails, so let us know what you think about Trend and what we ought to be covering. I love this time of year. Autumn is when living in the North East of Scotland is at its best. I can forget about the rashly-purchased additions to my summer wardrobe, bought in anticipation of endless summer days and start to justify checking out all the new season’s looks in the shops.

Autumn is about taking some time out for you, so get out and see what’s going on. We took the train to Cologne, enjoyed some slow food, tracked down the best cakes, visited Slains Castle, caught up with a new art event, met one of the North East’s leading milliners and tried our hand at some artwork. Our fashion team were busy pulling together the best new looks for work and David Gillanders gave the new baby BMW a good workout. Behind the scenes, we’ve been working on refreshing the magazine and organising it into sections. Let us know what you think.

2011 is our 60th Anniversary

We have been providing the highest standard of eyecare to our patients since 1951

EYECARE Laser Eye Surgery (blade free) - performed by our Consultant Ophthalmologists Implants Eye Examinations SKINCARE As autumn is now upon us and the heating gets switched on, our skin can suffer from the effects of dehydration. Although daily moisturising helps to keep skin supple, there are other treatments that can maintain healthy skin. A Facial Peel removes dead skin cells and rehydrates the skin by increasing its capacity to hold water. Collagen is also stimulated to firm and tone the skin. A Microdermabrasion uses medical grade crystals to remove the dead outermost layer of skin, leaving a bright, smooth complexion. Conditions such as age spots, broken capillaries, or rosacea (reddening of the skin), can be treated using Intense Pulse Light (IPL) which produces, fresher, younger looking skin. Aging, sun exposure, hereditary and lifestyle factors including nutrition, alcohol consumption and smoking all may contribute to facial wrinkling. Prior acne may have made the surface of your skin uneven. These problems, as well as certain other skin conditions, may be improved by Laser Skin Resurfacing. A laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer, improving the quality and texture of your skin while stimulating collagen regeneration. Our Radio Frequency treatment can tighten up any areas of skin which appear saggy. Whilst aging is a natural process, most people prefer to look and feel good for their age. We can help you achieve a younger, fresher skin with a natural look using Facial Softening Injections. Frown lines, crows feet, bunny lines on the nose or a dimpled chin are all areas that can be treated. We can also enhance your facial profile creating fuller lips, and smoothing out lines and wrinkles with the use of Fillers. Once your skin looks better, it makes you feel better. All injectable treatments are performed by our cosmetic surgeons. OTHER TREATMENTS Laser Hair Removal using the ‘gold standard’ Soprano laser to permanently remove hair. Laser Liposuction removal of stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to weight loss/exercise. Eye Bag Removal removal of sagging skin around the eyes leaving you with a‘less tired’ look. Fat Transfer to add volume to areas that require it. Scarring, Moles & Protruding Ears can be dealt with successfully by our surgeons. VNUS CLosure for varicose veins Sclerotherapy or Laser Vein Treatment for other types of vein conditions. Earlobe Piercing for adults and children (8 years and above). a decade at the cutting edge of style > words by ALISON DANIELS

When Philip and Audrey Harkins opened their first Saks Hair and Beauty salon a decade ago, they had just a dozen staff and an ambition to be Aberdeen’s most successful hair salon. Fast forward a decade and Saks is not just celebrating ten years at the top, but both Aberdeen salons are the busiest Saks salons in the UK, with the thirty eight staff enjoying a well deserved reputation for excellence and a cache of awards to prove it. Over the years, both the Union Street flagship store and the newer branch at Garthdee’s David Lloyd Club have remained at the forefront of beauty and hair techniques, as a result of the owners’ continual commitment to training and developing their staff and bringing the latest technologies to the city. The constant innovation and influx of visiting top-flight trainers make it no surprise that

both salons have carried off the accolade of being Saks Salon of the Year and finalists in industry competitions such as The Sapphires and the L’Oreal Colour Trophy.

To enter go to www.trendmagazine.co.uk click the competitions tab and answer this question: Which birthday is Saks celebrating?

Many of the treatments offered in the salons are exclusive to Aberdeen, with a CACI Ultra machine for non-surgical facelifts, Endermologie body sculpting, Nouveau lash extensions, Xen-Tan and an Ellipse IPL system for removing and reducing unwanted body hair. The hair salons boast five L’Oreal Colour Specialist Degree holders, the ultimate in colour training for skilled professionals.

They’ll also be fundraising for Jeans for Genes and Breast Cancer Care. It’s a combination of dedication and innovation that’s easily summed up, let’s call it SAKS appeal.

Naturally, the salons have planned a number of special treats to mark their first decade in business, with a staff raffle and a customer raffle featuring a host of prizes. For Trend readers they are offering the chance to win 6Caci Ultra facials valued at over £400.

frox rox Frox on Thistle Street is already a firm favourite with many Trend readers whenever they need a stunning ensemble for a red carpet or black tie event. The shop is a treasure chest of gorgeous evening dresses, artfully arranged by colour and augmented with a superb selection of wraps, boleros, handbags and finishing touches. New owner, Andrea Brodie was a longstanding customer who loved Frox so much she bought the business from her friend, Jeanette Grant. Jeanette jokes that she and Andrea are swapping lives, as Andrea has just returned from Lagos, where Jeanette’s husband has been posted.

24

Andrea plans to build on the reputation Jeanette has built up for having the most fabulous frocks and the best customer service in town. She and her staff are brilliant at encouraging women who aren’t totally body confident into gowns that will take them from the background to centre stage. For Andrea it’s all about helping women to feel wonderful. “I love the moment when someone comes out in The Dress. It’s amazing. They hold themselves so differently, they seem taller, slimmer and younger – the right dress gives you such a confidence boost!” Andrea has sourced a great new range of gowns that will extend her size range from a six to a twenty six, and plans to refresh the look of the store in the coming months.

The staff keep a log of who has bought a gown for a particular event and won’t sell the same dress to another customer attending the same occasion. Since many of their gowns are exclusive, it means there’s very little chance of someone else turning up in your dress - something many women have nightmares about before a big night out. Frox is the place when you need to get dressed up, but not stressed up! 28 Thistle Street Aberdeen AB10 1XD T: 01224 622692 E: froxabz@hotmail.co.uk www.frox.uk.com

better by design Dargie Design’s glass fronted trapezoidal building on West North Street is as distinctive and stylish as the furniture collections the store houses over its two levels. The family run business offers an outstanding collection of modern furniture, from elegantly minimalist sofas, dining tables and chairs and exotic colour-pop leather upholstery, to sleek beds and wardrobes. There are statement chairs that offer the level of finish normally associated with supercars and quirky bar stools, lighting and storage units from some of the best names in European furniture design. Much of Dargie Design’s selection is based on design classics; pieces that will look as fresh and modern in fifteen years as they do today. Keith Dargie, who’s in charge of buying at the family business explains, “When we started almost twenty years ago, we wanted to bring top quality modern design to the North East of Scotland, but we also wanted to offer furniture that would last and continue to look great. About 90% of our business is from repeat customers. They know we offer a straightforward approach and attention to detail that’s appreciated”.

The team expend considerable effort in sourcing manufacturers who produce top quality furniture, with modern designs concealing traditional craftsmanship and construction. Features like inner beechwood frames and double springing means that furniture not only continues to look great, but it’s also a lot more comfortable than much of what’s available elsewhere - so much so that you may be tempted to snuggle up for hours. Dargie Design stocks storage and bedroom furniture from Germany’s Hülsta, sofas and chairs from modern Dutch masters Leolux and an impressive selection from Ligne Roset, one of the most exclusive makers in France. It’s a standout selection designed to make any home look special, without sacrificing comfort or quality for style. Step into Kutchenhaus and prepare to be dazzled. From the stars twinkling on the statement ceiling to the stunning glass kitchens and topflight celebrities endorsing the appliances on offer, cooking doesn’t get any better than this.

the Xeno red ultra high gloss display incorporates a sleek elliptical table. Others feature genuine walnut, a whole wall of silver, handle-less units or striking white glass door fronts with a feature band of knotted woodgrain.

Kutchenhaus, which deals directly with one of Europe’s largest kitchen manufacturer, luxury brand Nobilia, has just opened in Aberdeen’s Union Square and is sizzling with some of the city’s highest quality yet best-priced kitchens.

And, when you see the unusual combination of bleached out wood and storm grey gloss, with a triple run of units housing separate steam oven, combination microwave and conventional oven/ grill plus an induction zone with teppanyaki plate, you’ll understand why the appliances are favourites of some of the world’s best chefs.

Ranged across around 9,000 square feet of showroom, including a mezzanine floor, its 32 displays feature in glamorous room sets and offer all the assurance of a superb, custombuilt German kitchen at about half of the cost you might expect.

Michel Roux Snr, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal all use Sub-Zero and/or Wolf appliances, as do the Beckhams, Madonna and Michael Caine, appreciating that they are the closest they can get to commercial grade equipment.

Traditionalists will love the soft cream and buttermilk models with black granite worktops while fashionistas will fall for this season’s hottest colour, red. Teamed with blonde wood,

But for those without the celebrity-sized bank account, there are well-priced alternatives from Neff and Hotpoint.

There are ten kitchen price groups and all the models feature on point of sale flatscreens, detailing the component parts and price for each style, based on a classic L-shaped layout, starting from around £8,000. With the option of requesting varying heights of units and each kitchen made to order with your name on it, Kutchenhaus offers bespoke luxury for less. When Moira McGlashan went out to pick up a pair of boots they proved the most exciting and expensive footwear she’s ever bought….For as well as the boots, she ended up acquiring a shop! It was love at first sight when she spotted the vacant property across the courtyard at Milton of Crathes and a whirlwind romance ensued as the venture went from idea to reality in just a couple of months. Now the business is beguiling shoppers searching for unique homeware, accessories and furniture.

perpetual calendar; a pretty writing desk (perfect for the porcelain ink-well) and old railway-style luggage rack. Then there are birdcages, music stands, notebooks and pebbles painted with botanics and butterflies – plus easy, free parking and seven-day opening, Everything is sourced by Moira who infuses the stock with her style, honed in a career including home styling, interior design and furniture upcycling. She’s also the only North-east stockist of Annie Sloan paints, and offers free furniture painting demos at Rustiques.

Nestling in an idyllic setting among trees, with the shimmering Dee in the background, Rustiques is an interiors paradise, offering everything from a knight’s suit of armour to shabby chic with a classical French edge, quirky pieces like a white stag’s head and replica antler chair plus items of industrial chic for loft living.

If you needed any more inspiration, check out her anthem boards: ‘Happiness is not a destination, it is a way of life’, or ‘Some people want it to happen, some people wish it would happen, others make it happen’ – that one should be her personal motto.

Spread across three floors, the rooms are loosely defined by different themes, including traditional vintage featuring an ever-changing array of things you suddenly don’t know how you lived without: gorgeous old shop clocks; a classy

Restaurant REVIEW > REVIEW by CAROL BROWN

MUCHALLS BISTRO I’d never been to Muchalls before my visit to the Muchalls Bistro. I think we’d seen all of the pretty coastal village before realising that we had driven right past the entrance to the Bistro’s car park on our way in to the village.

sliced, pink and tender and the award-winning black pudding (from Ramseys of Carluke) was also very good. Thyme roasted potatoes and a sauté of Mediterranean vegetables complemented the dish well.

Warm and welcoming inside, with friendly service, every table was taken on a rainy Friday night and I suspect that the bistro - rightly - has a loyal following. The bistro runs theme nights, and I was kicking myself when I realised that it had been Lobster night just the night before.

We shouldn't have, but just in the name of research, shared a deliciously tangy lemon tart. So, set your sat nav to the Muchalls Bistro you won't be disappointed.

Lobster envy subsided once I had the menu and a basket of warm, fresh bread put in front of me. The menu is well balanced and enticing with a range of seafood, game, steak and vegetarian dishes supplemented with 36 36

changing blackboard specials. My crab bisque was rich, creamy and satisfying and my partner’s duck and pistachio terrine hit the spot. I was also tempted by his main course choice from the specials board - a gratin of salmon, monkfish, king prawns and mussels in a garlic cream sauce, but eventually decided on roast wood pigeon breast on baked black pudding, with a red wine jus. It came thinly

Cruising for cake

profile

> Words by Kate Gray

Heading off into the country, most people are hoping for bright skies, clear air, and sunshine. Not me. . . I pretty much hope for wind and driving rain so I have an excuse to suggest abandoning a walk and heading straight to one of my favourite cafes. The Black Faced Sheep in Aboyne is very near the top of my list. It is bright, busy and the attached next-door shop spills into the café, so there is always something other than cake to tempt you…

. . . enjoy an atmosphere that is almost as good as the cake.

If the only thing on the menu was the gingerbread I would still be a frequent visitor it is sticky and light and not too spicy - but their sandwiches, salads, and, of course, other great cakes are also worth ditching the outdoors for. If you’re a scone fiend - who enjoys good music, a warm welcome, and an extensive selection of herbal and fruit teas - then I highly recommend Platform 22 in Torphins. A pot of their lemon and ginger tea with a spiced oatmeal and raisin

scone (served warm) is worth any detour that you have to make to get there. And if you’re travelling near Chapel of Garioch anytime soon, then definitely don’t miss out on the Old Post Office. I dropped in one Friday - three days after opening - and it didn’t take long to find out why it was already so busy. The new teahouse has been slipped very sympathetically into the original post office and general shop. The carefully preserved shelves and counters are now home to specialist teas, local produce, and books. Stop by for a delicious, crumbly, cherry and sultana slice, and enjoy an atmosphere that is almost as good as the cake. chef focus

Q & A's Why did you decide to become a chef? Were you interested in cooking when you were a child? I started working as a kitchen porter in The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews when I was 12 years of age. My interest in cooking came from there and I realised that this was the profession I would follow from then on. Tell us how you came to be in your current job? I came to be in the current job when there was an opening this year. I want to work with the freshest of local produce and to develop my unique style of Scottish cuisine. How would you describe the food you offer at Falls of Feugh? The food I offer is fresh home-style family favourites with a twist. What foods do you feel are underrated? One food I feel is underrated is Herring, and a lot of the tried and true family favourites.

James H Bell Head Chef Falls of Feugh

38

What’s your own favourite food? And where did you have your most memorable meal? I like anything that I don’t cook myself. My most memorable meal was in the Lake District which was a delicious roast lamb with all its accompaniments. Tell us about a culinary disaster perhaps from your childhood or early career? Did you ever make anything inedible? The only time I have experienced any bad things happening is when the equipment breaks down and then I have to improvise and keep things running as smooth as possible. I have never made anything that inedible to date.

Silver Celebration

25 YEARS AT POCRA QUAY

When seafood supremo Rick Stein raves that it boasts the best views of any UK fish restaurant you know it must be pretty special.

Factor in a stellar cast of diners – Helen Mirren, Prince Albert of Monaco, Sir David Attenborough, Stephen Fry – one of the top ratings in the Good Food Guide and produce so fresh you can salute the fishermen from your table, then it’s nothing short of stunning. With a provenance stretching back a quarter of a century through the same family, the Silver Darling on Aberdeen’s Pocra Quay is a culinary institution. Ironically it took a Frenchman, Didier Dejean, to give the port its first fish restaurant and his dedication and skill have forged a reputation for excellence unrivalled since 1986. Today his son, Julien, born the year it opened, is restaurant manager. Occupying the old Customs House, the upstairs restaurant, with its elegant charcoal accents and 360 degrees of

glass, enjoys a wraparound panorama of picturesque Footdee, the busy harbour and the Buchan coastline. Local lobster and crab join fresh fish from Fraserburgh and Peterhead, along with West Coast scallops for the Silver Darling treatment – cooked sympathetically, showcased at their best with a light touch and served at starched, white tables. A new menu features scallops, oysters, halibut and turbot, two-course table d’hote lunch for just £18.50 and a wine list offering an impressive range from under £20 a bottle. The ethos of the Silver Darling – the local name for the herring which made the port so prosperous – is always fresh, local and consistently excellent food cooked with honest simplicity and served by friendly, professional staff.

And it’s why it has such a loyal following: for weekday and Sunday lunch; evening get-together; wedding or intimate gathering in the private dining room. Rated top in Grampian and on a par with The Kitchin in Edinburgh by the Good Food Guide, it’s no wonder the restaurant is already filling up with Christmas bookings. Whether it’s dining as snowflakes fall, bathed in sun or watching the wild North Sea, you’re guaranteed superb food in unique surroundings. And the best thing? Nature’s spectacular outdoor show comes free. The Silver Darling, North Pier, Pocra Quay, Aberdeen AB11 5DQ T: 01224 576229 E: silverdarling@hotmail.co.uk www.thesilverdarling.co.uk 49

New media tools revolutionising the residential property market! > Words By Mike Sinclair, Senior Property Partner with leading Scottish Law Firm, Aberdein Considine

It would be hard to find an industry which has undergone more radical change recently than the residential property sector. Clients returning to the market will be surprised at the variety of tools now used – and indeed considered essential – for successfully buying, renting or selling property. Websites are important for any business but are now vital for property lawyers and estate agents. The latest addition to our own website, www.acandco.com, is our new property portal which offers significant additional functionality to Buyers, Sellers, Landlords and Tenants across Scotland. Stimulating great interest is our new Property Tracker, which enables Sale clients to remotely access marketing data, obtain updates on viewing activity, surveys, notes of interest and offers – 24/7. The new property portal also sees the introduction of My Account, a tool which can be used by Buyers and Tenants who wish to register their property requirements online, download particulars, view Home Reports, request a property viewing or indeed an appointment with one of our legal or financial advisers, all at the press of a button.

52

The introduction of the Property Tracker and My Account are viewed by the firm’s Partners as digi-centric projects that complement our enhanced use of social media which, for example, allows buyers looking for property to also find us on Facebook and Twitter. Your Packed Lunch Could Save the Environment! Scottish households throw out a staggering 570,000 tonnes of food a year. Residents in Aberdeen already recycle food waste as part of their green kerbside collection but what happens to those good environmental intentions during work hours? North-east firm Keenan Recycling says that as well as recycling paper, cardboard and plastics, North-east businesses should recycle food waste. The business, based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, can collect food waste from local businesses and transform it into high-quality compost at their award-winning £5m facility. Director Grant Keenan said: “By 2013 businesses won’t have a choice as the Government plans to introduce legislation requiring mandatory food waste collections from businesses.”

A panto competition?

Oh yes it is!

One of the highlights of any festive season is a trip to the pantomime at HMT in Aberdeen. Everyone from four to 104 will be thrilled by this year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk starring the redoubtable Elaine C. Smith. With more comedy than you can shake a bag of magic beans at, stunning sets and outrageous costumes, it’s an unmissable event for the whole family.

Keenan’s food waste collection service allows organisations to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, teabags, cups and paper towels. Items like these thrown in the general waste end up in landfill, creating methane and damaging the environment. So, with landfill tax set to increase every year, perhaps it’s time to think about recycling food both at home and at work to safeguard the environment for future generations. For more information on Keenan Recycling’s collection service, contact (01771) 644883.

The show runs from December 3rd to January 8th and we have a family ticket up for grabs for two adults and two children To enter, just visit the website at www.trendmagazine.co.uk, click on the competitions tab and answer the following question: Who stars in this year’s pantomime? 55

BMW’s Beautiful Baby > Words by DAVID GILLANDERS They say good things come in small packages and that’s certainly true of BMW’s new 1 Series Sports Hatch, which manages to pack an impressive level of performance and specification into the 120d model. While the compact 1 series may mark the entry point to the BMW range, there’s no compromise on quality or features. The new models are roomier than before, but also less expensive to run, thanks to a new range of ultra-efficient petrol and diesel engines. The 120d has a 2.0litre diesel engine, which produces 184bhp and reaches 62mph in 7.2 seconds, yet also gets 65mpg and has a low CO2 output, making road tax affordable. A new feature called ECO PRO tweaks various on-board systems to maximise driving efficiency and in-car displays show how 58

much range has been gained by driving in this way. BMW has retained the rear-wheel-drive layout of the original car, and has concentrated on achieved near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution making for superb handling. BMW have updated the styling on the new series 1, taking visual cues from the company’s 5 and 6-series inside and outside the car. The 120d appears to sit lower and wider than previous models thanks to the flared wheel arches. On the practical side, the new models have bigger boots, increased leg room for rear seat passengers and a wider range of options to allow the car to be custom specified. Options such as leather sports seats, a pop up flat screen monitor, chrome exhaust, keyless start, parking sensors, a rear view camera, radar-guided cruise control and internet access are all available as extras. The 1 Series starts from £19,375 for the entry-level 116i with the top of the range 120d from £23,480. Everything to GANE > words by alison daniels

Alison Daniels talks to Nina Eggens about GANE’s first Go Local event, which aims to bring arts and businesses together to boost local areas. Art amongst the artichokes, poetry at the poultry counter and stilt walkers in the shoe shop - it’s all part of Growing Audiences North East’s Go Local campaign. Nina Eggens of GANE, explains what’s behind the collaborations, “Go Local is a new campaign encouraging people to explore and take advantage of all the great things available on their doorstep for them and their families: theatre & concerts, galleries, festivals, as well as wonderful local food produce, restaurants, shops and other local businesses.

60

With the Go Local campaign we are hoping to bring the arts, businesses and tourism together to create a real local ‘buzz’ and make people rediscover the great quality that is around us.” The first Go Local event took place in Banchory in September when the High Street was transformed by theatre performances in a furniture store, poetry readings, live music, a performance stage, a photo exhibition in a shop's changing room and special offers in participating shops and cafes, creating a festival atmosphere and attracting customers.

“Every Go Local campaign can be different. It can range from a full blown street festival to a simple mutual support scheme between an arts centre and a local restaurant or retailer. We do encourage any campaign to have a key artistic component however, whether it is live music, poetry performances or an exhibition. Being different, thinking outside the box, putting a smile on people's faces, that's what it should be about.” Nina is keen to hear from communities and business groups who’d like to host their own Go Local event. Milliner Extraordinaire > Words & photography by Fiona JD Pearson

A hat, according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, is: ‘a covering for the head, worn for protection from the weather or as a fashion accessory’, but a hat from Hazel’s Hats Millinery, Huntly is so much more. 62

www.hazelshats.co.uk Hazel’s Hats Millinery, 42 Gordon Street, Huntly AB54 8EQ T: 01466 792477 Opening hours: Monday-Wednesday 10am-4pm Friday 10am-4pm Saturday 10am-3pm

Milliner extraordinaire Hazel Buxton is a true artist who has a passion to create unique and beautiful objects d’art to adorn the head. She opened her first millinery shop, Hazel’s Hats Millinery, in 2007 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. Hazel commented, “I have always loved hats ever since I was a little girl. In 1999, following the birth of my first child, I made the momentous decision to resign from my oil industry job and follow my lifelong dream to become a milliner. Initially I ran a small but very successful hat hire business from my home then a few years later, with encouragement and support from my husband Dominic, I enrolled in a millinery course in Wales, which I really enjoyed, and learnt the art of hat making.”

With her new skills, enthusiasm and tremendous artistic flair Hazel fulfilled her dream, and opened her shop in Huntly’s main street four years ago; and has never looked back. She describes her shop as her canvas and her hats as her paintings. Customer care and attention to detail is key to Hazel. She assesses every client carefully; their face and body shape, colouring, height and, last but not least, their outfit before she suggests the perfect style, size and colour of hat to suit them and the occasion. Hazel believes by taking all these aspects into consideration her uniquely designed and made to measure hats will ensure the wearer feels confident, special and looks fabulous.

Hazel also creates stunning fascinators, hatinators, (a cross between a fascinator and a hat) and beautiful bridal tiaras and hair pieces. Her creations have been worn across the globe from the States to Dubai, Europe and throughout the UK. From weddings, race courses, and royal garden parties, Hazel’s Hats are worn with pride, style and always with a smile. > words by alison daniels

Even though we’ve had some fabulous prizes up for grabs in Trend, this gorgeous bag is probably the first one I’ve had to protect from people drooling and attempting to fondle it. So many of the girls have idly wondered if they might just borrow it, or just see what it looks like with their outfits that I've practically had to keep it under armed guard. It’s the Barbarella and it comes from Aspinal of London, one of the UK’s foremost leather goods companies. The Barbarella comes in twelve different colourways, but we have their Cobalt Blue option up for grabs. It’s worth £450, but it’s such a classic style that will never date and will last a lifetime. People will still be drooling over it when you’re eighty. The straps are just the perfect length so you can carry it over your shoulder or as a handbag. The quality is superb, with Italian leather and hardware set off by a chain handle detail. It’ll take you from envious glances on the school run or at the office to sighs of admiration at social events. Aspinal of London offers a superb range of handbags and all kinds of leather accessories online. Check out their Hepburn bag – a triumph of understated restraint, or their glamorous clutch bags. They also offer everything from pens to purses, photo albums, travel accessories, silk scarves, gentleman’s accessories and leather goods for the home. You can buy the range online at www.aspinaloflondon.com or at House of Fraser. To be in with a chance of winning, just go to www.trendmagazine.co.uk, click on the competitions tab and answer the following question: What’s the name of our prize Aspinal of London bag? 65

Cologne: Station to station

In many ways, Cologne offers the ideal long weekend. The city combines a charming old town, an imposing gothic cathedral, riverside walks, great food, archaeological sites, a spa complex, intriguing markets and almost thirty galleries and museums – covering everything from medieval art to chocolate. Add in friendly locals, 2000 years of history, great shopping and it’s like all the best bits of Rome, Paris, Venice and Prague rolled into one, but without the usual rip off mentality. It’s also really easy to get to by train. Take the relaxing and extremely comfortable East Coast service to London, indulge in some shopping and a show, then head off bright and early next morning on the

66

Eurostar. Grab an early lunch in Brussels and you can arrive in Cologne in time for a mid-afternoon coffee and cake. If you book well ahead, fares can be cheaper than flying. You can also take as much luggage as your travelling companion can carry, which is useful given that the city offers a superior shopping experience to London. You can blow the budget at Bulgari, Louis Vuitton or Hermes, but where the city really scores is in well-cut classics at fair prices. Hallhuber offers sublime Celine styling, while many European high street favourites crowd the main pedestrianised shopping streets of Schildergasse and Hohe Strass. The Belgian Quarter offers a host of emerging design

talent, such as leatherworker Alexander Hack, and vintage couture stores. Don’t miss Manufactum which offers traditional, well made products, selling everything from light switches to pasta, clothing to bicycles – each considered to be the best in design. Farina, the world’s oldest perfume house is another must visit. You can tour the museum and try the fresh eau de Cologne, first made in 1709, that has found favour with Austro-Hungarian Empresses and screen icons alike. Napoleon got through a bottle a day. be happy in a city that offers twenty eight varieties of Kolsh, the local beer which is served in bars and traditional brewhauses in 200ml glasses. Waiters will keep up a constant supply until you place your beer mat over the glass to signal you’ve quenched your thirst. Energetic groups can even do their sightseeing aboard a pedal-powered pub in the form of a BierBike. We stayed at the resplendent Excelsior Hotel Ernst, which has a deserved reputation as one of Europe’s finest hotels. Our room came equipped with a palatial marble bathroom, the world’s most comfortable bed, a walk-in wardrobe and a complimentary mini bar.

The hotel also has two of the top rated restaurants in the city. Hanse Stube offers upmarket French-influenced cooking, while Taku takes a pan-Asian fusion approach and is known for its innovative use of ingredients. If there’s a heaven, I fully expect that the Excelsior Hotel Ernst will be put in charge of both the accommodation and catering.

Cologne is a city that will reward a visit at any time of the year, from Christmas markets or February’s Karnival season, to summer pop festivals, but we’d suggest that if you’re after a bargain, January might be ideal, as hotel rates and train fares are low and the prospect of the sale season is very, very tempting.

The city is a foodie’s paradise with over a thousand restaurants, from the traditional Brewhauses serving sausage-centred cuisine, to Irish pubs. Late night street food comes in the form of giant pretzels, currywurst and chips, and those with a sweet tooth will find nirvana in the Chocolate Museum gift shop.

Entertaining Edinburgh There’s more to Edinburgh than tacky tartan shops, dubious politicians, crowds of braying festival goers and endless roadworks. In fact, it’s a great option for a sophisticated weekend break or day trip. Shopaholics won’t want to miss Jenners and Harvey Nick’s, or spend a pleasant afternoon pottering round the many galleries, boutiques and vintage stores in Stockbridge. The Grassmarket also offers some unusual shops that will repay a visit. Both the Zoo and the Camera Obscura are entertaining for families and the National Museum and Gallery will satisfy your cultural curiosity. Visit Gilmerton Cove, where you can explore a series of mysterious passages and chambers under the south side of the city. Book at www. gilmertoncove.org.uk. Kids will also love the Edinburgh Dungeon with its creepy corridors and cannibals. Combine sightseeing and shopping with a trip to Ocean Terminal, where you can visit the Royal Yacht Britannia and indulge in a bit of retail therapy. If relaxation therapy is more your thing, try the One spa at the Sheraton Grand or book a session at the Floatarium Spa.

And should you feeling peckish, why not enter our competition and you could win dinner or lunch for two, up to the value of £100, at the city’s renowned Cafe St Honoré which offers the very best Scottish produce in an authentically Parisian bistro interior. Executive Chef, Neil Forbes, and his kitchen team pride themselves on producing everything in-house using ingredients sourced from local producers and suppliers thus supporting the local economy and reducing food miles in line with their ‘Slow Food’ philosophy. In February this year, Neil was named Scottish Chef of the Year at the acclaimed Scottish Restaurant Awards To enter the competition, go to the Trend website at www.trendmagazine.co.uk click on the competitions tab and answer the following question: What’s the name of the Executive Chef at Cafe St Honoré?

Historic sites - particularly those that are home to important buildings are usually well cared for. There are groundskeepers, kept gardens, and perhaps a cafÊ, which is fine as these are often the things that bring in visitors and allow the preservation to continue. Sometimes, however, it is nice to come across a place that has been really left alone, and Slains Castle - minutes from Cruden Bay - is just such a place. It is hard to believe, even looking right at the ruins, what the elements have done in less than 100 years - the roof was removed in 1925 - to a castle that had previously stood for over three centuries. There are no information boards or neat lawns at Slains, no paths or handrails or signs warning of the cliff edges. It is a ruin - a proper ruin. And it is because of this that the castle is such an evocative place. It sits on the cliff, so close to the edge that in places its walls are flush with the cliff face. A quick glance out of one of the windows is enough to tell you that there is nothing but air between you and the waves far below. The last day I was there, the wind was hammering the castle, doing its best to drive the water up the cliffs. The sky was dark, the cliffs looked black, and the castle had never looked better. Bad weather, in my opinion, makes the place come alive, and I am not alone in thinking this. After his visit in 1773, the author and poet Samuel Johnson wrote, I would not for my amusement wish a storm, but as storms, whether wished or no, will sometimes happen, I may say, without violation of humanity, that I should willingly look out upon them from Slains castle.’ 70

Heart to Art For some people, creating works of art is no more an effort than breathing or blinking. For others - and I fall firmly into this category – art comes about as naturally as tightrope walking or break dancing. Happily, there is a place in Aberdeen called I Heart Art where every effort is treated equally and everyone walks away with a work of art to be proud of. Such is the mass appeal of art, even my husband asked to come along when the children and I were invited to find our inner da Vinci at I Heart Art in the Galleria, just off Bon Accord Street. Just walking into the shop gets the artistic juices flowing –

from the inviting paint-splattered tables to the shelves full of bare ceramic figures, you are overwhelmed with a need to pick up a paint brush and join in. If ceramics grab your fancy, then you can paint everything from a cupcake to a dog food bowl, all of which are later glazed and fired in the on-site kiln to ensure a professional finish. If you desire a bit more variety, you can paint your original design on canvas or even create your own personalised shopping bag. If you are looking for a unique party idea, I Heart Art hosts parties for all ages in the

> Words by Courtney O’Grady shop, and are even happy to bring the party to you at a time and place of your choosing. They also offer a full syllabus of craft classes covering a range of topics from jewellery and card making to knitting and crochet. Regardless of outcome, the very act of creating something with your own two hands is a reward in itself. The handpainted bag I now carry may not shout out Picasso, but it does let everyone know that I, too, heart art. www.i-heartart.co.uk T: 01224 905909

The Brothers Reid It’s often said that you can judge the worth of a band based on their live performance. And it’s more or less true, depending on the circumstances. After all any band can play their hearts out in front of an adoring crowd, but it’s hardly a test of character. Ask that same band to perform on a Tuesday night to a guy reading the paper and his dog however, and then you’ll get the measure of them. This thought occurs to me one recent Saturday night as The Brothers Reid take the stage in Cafe Drummonds. As a last minute addition to the bill, I’m curious to see them after hearing good reports. But I’m in the minority: as they prepare to begin, the dance-floor remains dauntingly empty. The crowd seem uninterested. It all

seems like it’s going to be a bit...awkward. But then The Brothers Reid tear the roof off the place.

By the end, there is whooping and there is hollering. There is dancing, there is cheering. It’s nothing short of triumphant. The Brothers Reid will be playing The Lemon Tree on Dec 23.

It’s infectious, refreshing; impossible not to get caught up in the excitement. They’re clearly enjoying themselves and - judging by the ever growing crowd in front of the stage – the audience is too. Of course, enthusiasm will only get you so far. But from all angles, The Brothers Reid have bags of talent to back it up, energetically blending Americana infused rock’n’roll with a hint of Celtic folk; interweaving guitars, harmonica,

Over to you Got something to tell us? Found a new shop or a great restaurant? Think there’s something we should be writing about? Discovered somewhere great thanks to Trend?

Hi With two small children, it’s been a few years since my wife and I enjoyed any significant time to ourselves. We always seem to be taking the kids to all their stuff and if we spent time together it tended to involve a takeaway, a bottle of wine and a DVD. We’ve now started to have a monthly date night, just enjoying dinner or a film by ourselves. Ever since I found a copy of Trend at work, it’s been a godsend for coming up with ideas and decent places to go. We’ve had some great meals out and I’m even planning a surprise long weekend for my wife’s birthday at one of the hotels you’ve featured. The only downside is the price of a babysitter! Thanks Dave XXXX, Aberdeen, (Surname removed so as not to spoil the surprise.)

Then why not let us know. Just drop us an e-mail or write...

Dear Trend I’ve just come back from your Lifestyle Show at Ardoe House. The lunch was great and I thought the idea of having a catwalk fashion show that had really stylish clothes for those of us who aren’t six foot tall and a size eight was refreshingly different. My friend and I enjoyed browsing the exhibitors and picked up a few things, but the best bit for me was getting some personal advice from your stylists. They were able to show me some new tricks and I’ve decided to treat myself to a bit of a revamp as I’ve been in a bit of a rut. I had no idea I had so many pairs of black trousers, so I’m going to buy a few new outfits, some up to the minute accessories and get my haircut. The show made me feel like a new woman. Thanks Jane Pirie, Inverurie

OUR WINNING LETTER! Dear Trend I recently stayed at a wonderful 5 star bed and breakfast in Grantown-on-Spey and I thought you might want to know about it. It really is a very special place and an ideal distance for a weekend trip from Aberdeen. www.thedulaig.com. The Bullochs, who run it, are a lovely couple and have such high standards and really care about their guests. The breakfast they serve is outstanding. ARCHIE’S

> words by PETER MITCHELL

GREAT LEAP FORWARD Times have changed big time with the Archie Foundation charity. Remember 2003 and the culmination of a huge fundraising drive when a staggering £5.1million was handed over to the new Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital for projects not funded by the NHS? That campaign certainly had the wow factor but was that the end for Archie? It was virtually mothballed for the next four years with income down to a trickle.

bring Archie back to life was largely inspired by community child-health teams all over the North seeking extra support. That’s why today Archie supports projects in 14 different hospitals in a land mass covering half of Scotland.

Fundraising director and father-of-two David Cunningham, a Borderer and Dundee University graduate, says: “The decision to

Needless to say, David’s vision of Archie’s future also included the need for the charity to vastly increase its income and in 2011,

“We are proud to say that this year we will have a direct impact on the lives of 100,000 sick children.”,

that figure could reach £1million. This quantum leap in financial support since he was appointed in 2008 has been achieved without great fanfare. “We are in this for the long haul,” David stresses, “so that we can continue to make a difference in the lives of our sick children for many years to come. It is a huge challenge but we are incredibly lucky to enjoy great support from people all over the north and north-east and indeed the islands.” At this point in our chat, David has a call to say that his two-year-old son, Lucas, who had been feverish all weekend, was being admitted to the children’s hospital where dad has his office. “This is an amazing place and I’m sure they will soon have him on the mend,” he says.
