Editor’s etchings With my little sister preparing to walk up the aisle on the sun-soaked island of Cyprus later this year, my mind is already turning to what to wear on the big day.
This issue of Trend comes packed with stunning special collections and accessories – from specialist boutiques right here on our doorstep – that are guaranteed to turn heads at this season’s most fashionable bashes. If you feel like a little pampering to ensure you look your best for that special occasion, why not enter one of the best competitions Trend has had the pleasure to offer: a pampering break for four at the exclusive Old Course Hotel, St Andrews. Bliss…(Don’t forget to send us your entries to this and our other fabulous competitions by 9th May). If it’s well-being you seek, flick through to page 10 for exclusive news of an exciting new alternative therapy that is making its UK debut at a clinic in Aberdeenshire. In this issue, our insight into food comes in the shape of an innovative recipe from No. 1 Brasserie’s Head Chef, Bob Miller. We also step into the recently opened Hammerton Store and see what delights they have to offer. Our very own food connoisseur, Carol Brown discovers how the seaside town of Stonehaven is firmly establishing itself. If you have attended a glamorous event in the North-east recently, see our ever-popular society pages, which capture Aberdeen’s elite at play. And if you are organising a forthcoming prestigious event, do let the Trend paparazzi know! Enjoy this, the only guide to a modern life in Aberdeen. Best wishes, Niki Tennant Editor 03

05 RAY SMITH Ray Smith is Trend’s accomplished fashion photographer and has lived in Aberdeen most of his life. He has been described by critics as ‘one of the most innovative photographers working in Scotland, with a growing international reputation’. His portfolio of work ranges from landscapes and commercial to fashion and portraiture photography. He has been celebrated in major exhibitions and has been recognised by the New York Art Directors for his commercial photography. His career has seen him create an award-winning 10 page fashion magazine spread featuring Vivienne Westwood designs set at one of his favourite locations, Balmedie Beach. A strong interest in the work of street photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Josef Koudelka inspired Ray to take his own documentary style photographs depicting life in and around Aberdeen. We feel that the images Ray creates for the fashion pages of Trend are a major factor to our success. www.raysmithphotography.com

Donald’s work of the Royal family and showbiz personalities has been published all over the world but most of Trend’s readers will, no doubt, recognise him from when he’s out and about photographing local events for Peter Mitchell’s Diary Page. Where will Trend find you having coffee? I miss Café Society, but I do like Dizzy's when I've got time.
My scene in Aberdeen Since Donald Stewart was a wee boy living in his native Glasgow, he had an interest in newspapers inspired by his father, who worked for the Daily Record and The Herald.
Where do you love to lunch? Very often lunch is on the move from a burger van! If I do have time, anywhere in the West End. What’s your favourite clothes shop? There's a tailor in Nice that I like but I don't get much time to shop around for clothes here so I make do with John Lewis and M&S. Where is your favourite place in the North-east? Deeside - I've grown to love it through covering Royal assignments. It has good food, scenery and some very relaxing spots. Who cuts your hair? Dick at Salon 70 on Great Western Road. Where do you buy flowers? It could be the local garage or supermarket.
Donald’s interest in photography was nurtured at school and he soon secured a place as a trainee photographer with the Scottish Farmer Publications. In 1974 he moved to Aberdeen joining Aberdeen Journals, and worked with the Evening Express. Donald has covered some of the North-east’s top news and sport stories, including photographing the Queen turning on BP's Forties Field. He also covered eight Scottish Cup Finals in a row and captured many top personalities from Margot Fonteyn to Hollywood great Burt Lancaster. In 1989 he left the Journals to pursue a freelance career and now works for titles including The Financial Times, The Telegraph, The Scotsman and The Sun. He also assists some of the country’s top PR companies and works in the corporate market. 08
Who’s the Aberdonian you most admire and why? Aberdeen's footballing son, Denis Law. What about the city makes you most proud? It's always been clean and safe with a good standard of education. What would you change? For Europe's oil capital it's lagging far behind other major cities, for example, the airport, roads and attracting major events. Outwith the oil industry, it's financially poor with lots of rich individuals. Best thing about living in the North-east? The big city feel with the countryside just minutes away by car.
Natalie Lyall, 20 “Yes, I think I would definitely consider it when I’m older. I would probably get an eyelift, have my lips plumped and maybe even try botox. As long as it’s not too extreme, it will look good. I reckon it would be quite a nerve-wracking experience, though.”
Ilim Tanyeli, 18 “No, I don’t think it’s right but I guess it is up to the individual. I think it’s quite vain and not very masculine. I have nothing against others who decide to have it done though.“
Susanne Currie, 17 “Maybe - when I’m older, perhaps. I’d probably consider a tummy tuck or liposuction. Over the course of last year, I had laser hair removal and although it was a little bit painful at the time, it was definitely worth it and I would recommend it to anyone.”
You said it...
James Tulloch, 22 “No, I would never have anything done. I think it’s really vain. Unless it’s for a purpose such as rectifying scarring, there is really no need. I often find it can make the person less attractive, and I guess it’s more of a girly thing!”
Yurenma Macrae, 35 “Yes, I’ve had cosmetic surgery. After being pregnant, I felt diet and exercise were not helping, as there was a lot of muscle damage, so I got a tummy tuck. I later had a breast enhancement. I think you should be able to do what you want but be responsible about it.”
WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER COSMETIC SURGERY? > Interview by Nicola Smith
< Tracey Forbes, 29 “Probably not. It’s not worth it and you have to consider the recovery time as well. I’d much rather spend the money on expensive creams. I may change my mind in the future as there will be advances with procedures, but I’m still a little queasy at the thought of it.” > Saefa Teber, 29 “I really don’t see the need. It can go wrong and make you look less attractive. I tend to use face creams to look after my skin and keep me looking young that way. In my view, it’s not really for men.”

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH
Thinking outside the voice box It was a bold step by leading alternative therapist Lilias Curtin to swap a lucrative Harley Street career for a new way of life and a new practice in rural Aberdeenshire. > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
Lilias – whose clients range from infants and the man on the street, to A- list celebrities – is set to introduce to the UK a revolutionary alternative therapy concept that could be the key to unlocking the answers for a myriad of ailments. Having practiced with London’s exclusive Harley Street for a decade, Lilias invested £1000s in bringing the vocal profiling technique from the States to the UK. “If you pick up the phone to an old friend, you immediately recognize if something is not right, just by listening to their voice. That’s because the discord and frequencies in their body are not as they should be,” explained Lilias, who moved from the South-east to Lumphanan with her three children in May last year. Vocal profiling gives a complete representation of your inner health. It involves taking two 30-second voice recordings, turning them into a graph and analysing all the high and low points to identify what is out of kilter. It highlights a variety of problems, such as if the muscle is stressed, or if there is inflammation or poison. Lilias then gives
10
reciprocal frequencies through low analogue sound which should then balance it out, to resolve the issue. Lilias describes the technique as a diagnostic tool that addresses conditions the conventional medical world has been unable to solve. After 30 years of research, the tool is being successfully used by more than 200 US doctors. “For someone who has insomnia, voice profiling may address the balance of depleted melatonin levels. For severe and long term conditions, vocal profiling looks inside the body to see the root cause of the problem, giving a definitive picture of what needs to be done,” she explained. Lilias’s eight-year-old son, Tom, was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. “Vocal profiling detected from his voice patterns that he had 11 out of 12 of the autistic genes, as well as vaccine damage. He receives reciprocal frequencies for these issues and now has a chance to live a normal life.” Lilias Curtin, Full of Energy Ltd Tel: 01339 883848 www.liliascurtin.com

Facial Awareness > ADVERTORIAL
Low humidity, central heating and cold weather can leave the skin dull, dry and rough. On top of that, April showers can strip the skin of natural moisture. Everyone should have regular facials – once a month is sufficient – but at this time of year it’s even more important. No matter what type of skin you have, there is a facial to suit everyone and our therapists tailor each treatment to your needs. We have seven facials, but to combat the effects of changing seasons the two I would most recommend are the Skin Brightening and the Rehydrator facials. With every treatment we have three different ESPA oils to choose from; relaxation, detoxing or invigorating. Each facial includes cleansing and exfoliation followed by a full face massage, which includes pressure point and lymph drainage. A mask is applied before a full oriental head massage and the skin is finally treated with refreshing toners and moisturisers. Regular facials keep the skin hydrated and replenished, unblock pores and give essential relaxation. We also offer specialised gents’ facials, using hot towels to open the pores before applying products from our ESPA Men’s range.

TOP HATS > WORDS BY AVRIL OENONE
With the advent of the wedding season and Royal Ascot looming on the horizon, its time to take a serious look at what we will be wearing on our heads to really set off that fabulous outfit we have in mind. Many women today have absolutely no idea what hat styles are most complimentary, simply believing that hats don’t suit them. This, however is not the case and with the following tips to help, you will realise that finding the right hat involves so much more than matching or complimenting the colour, although this can be a challenge in itself! The first golden rule is to choose a hat with a brim that is no wider than your shoulders in all cases‌ except Royal Ascot! If you wear glasses, find one with a brim that turns up at the front. Generally speaking only taller ladies can carry off a hat with a down-turned brim, while those of us that are vertically challenged should look for a brim that sweeps up on one side. If you have a long or thin face, steer clear of anything too wide as it will only exaggerate
this. However finding a smaller hat does not mean you have to compromise on the WOW factor. The magenta hat featured here demonstrates this conclusively. It was designed specifically to prove this point and in addition will suit ladies with glasses! The elegant and stunning ivory percher by Philip Somerville is also a testimonial to the fact that bigger is not necessarily better; this little gem adds inches too! Even the trimmings and materials from which a hat is made from can make or break its suitability, as can the overall style in relation to your chosen outfit. Hopefully these guidelines will help you through the many choices available but if in doubt consult a milliner who cannot only help you find the perfect hat, but can also make one for you if need be. Pauline’s Say... Whoever said romance was dead? Well that would’ve been me on Valentine Day this year when my other half boldly announced “You won’t really mind if I go to the Aberdeen Bayern Munich game would you.” I figured out very quickly that this wasn’t intended to be a question! So to make up he whisked me off to a five star west coast hotel for a weekend of luxury. Lucky me - only luck was not on our side when atrocious weather conditions caused a massive power cut for most of the weekend leaving us with no water, heating, electricity and not a cooked breakfast in sight. So instead of being pampered from head to toe in the hotel spa I ended up at the not-so-five-star Ayr cinema. Now I’ve recently also had my first taste of football hospitality at the match between Huntly and Cove Rangers at Christie Park. My friend Mary and I are best known for scoring the best shopping bargains on a Saturday afternoon but we had a late call up for Huntly hospitality after two guests cancelled. We had lunch in the golf club, drinks in the cricket club, eventually making it to the football ground for kick off. After full time drinks we all piled back on the minibus far from the quiet, polite passengers who had been driven out earlier. Now what was the score again? Obviously old age is having an effect on my memory! Talking of getting on a bit – my age really caught up with me recently when I was called upon to host the Albyn School fashion show. I went to rehearsals the weekend before the event and seriously thought that some of the teachers who were modelling were higher pupils. They looked very young – a bit like most doctors, police officers and bar staff nowadays!
A marvellous night for a moonwalk > ADVERTORIAL
A team of 40 members and staff from the state-of-the-art David Lloyd Racquets and Health Club in Aberdeen are in training for this June’s charity Moonwalk event. They will be among 12,000 women and a few brave men who will power-walk the streets of Edinburgh in brightly decorated bras in support of vital breast cancer organisations. David Lloyd personal trainers, Lyndsey Thompson, Michele Lombardi and Laura Sarkis, are putting those members who have joined them in signing up for this worthwhile event through their paces. Michele, a NASM Level 3 qualified trainer, says: “The Moonwalk is a great challenge for everyone regardless of their fitness levels. With a structured training plan which contains stamina, conditioning and balance exercises, it’s achievable for all. “Those who are taking part are already benefiting from the right kind of training here at David Lloyd by working on a lot of different muscle groups and building up strength. There’s a great buzz around the club about the event.” In a bid to raise an additional £1000, the club held a ‘pink day.’ Future fundraising events include quiz nights, a wine tasting evening, car washing and sponsored fitness classes. For more information please see www.davidlloydleisure.co.uk or contact Ross Blackadder on 01224 321335.
The 2006 Edinburgh Moonwalk raised a staggering £2.3 million, most of which will stay in Scotland. 23
THE PATIO HOTEL ABERDEEN
> WORDS BY CAROL BROWN When you’ve lived somewhere for a long time, it’s easy to overlook what is in the locality, and although I’ve been to the Patio Hotel on Beach Boulevard on a number of occasions, I’d never ventured over the threshold of Breakers Leisure Club and Beauty Spa. I’m here to indulge in a half spa day. The Spa also offers full spa days, overnight packages and a wide range of treatments. The leisure club is light and airy with a well-equipped gym and studio offering a varied range of classes including yoga, martial arts and beginners’ line dancing, which you can join in if on a spa package. Throughout the leisure club and hotel are specially commissioned photographs of the Aberdeen beach area; it’s a nice touch. My morning begins with a generous fresh fruit platter and orange juice (I’m feeling healthier already) and a consultation with Rosanna, one of five therapists at the spa. The half day includes two treatments. I began with a 30-minute mini facial. Breakers use Collin products from France. It’s a range that I’m unfamiliar with, but 24
my skin is still feeling so good a day after, perhaps I should get better acquainted. The muted tones of the treatment room, coupled with subtle lighting and soothing music, soon had me relaxing. Rosanna quickly tuned in to my skin type; as I suspected, dry going on to de-hydrated (note to self- drink even more water!) Soon, I’m being cleansed, toned, exfoliated, moisturised and massaged and enjoying every minute. I’m given a useful ‘Beauty Prescription’ with details of all the products used. I’ve time for a leisurely swim in the 15 metre pool, as well as a dip in the jacuzzi and relax in the steam room before my next treatment. I’ve gone for something that I should be able to do myself but never seem to have time for - a 30 minute mini-manicure using Jessica products. My half day concludes with a grilled chicken and pesto ciabatta from a wide selection of classic sandwiches and salads served in the Atrium Bar. Breakers have recently launched Beauty
Memberships. There are two packages available: the Classic at £35.00 per month and the Platinum at £45.00 per month. If you are already in the habit of having regular beauty treatments or, like me, want to get into the habit, they are worth exploring. It’s a pleasant environment, with plenty of parking and friendly and welcoming staff throughout. Patio Hotel, Beach Boulevard, Aberdeen AB24 5EF 01224 652075 www.patiohotels.com

Innocent Aesthetics Ltd. > ADVERTORIAL
Jan Leiper provides a high standard of advanced aesthetic skin treatments and products to clients, of all ages, in both professional and private surroundings to help them achieve their desired facial rejuvenation experience. Before venturing into aesthetic medicine, Jan worked as a staff nurse in Aberdeen’s Royal Infirmary. Having treatments herself, her flair for aesthetic beauty beckoned and she formed Innocent Aesthetics Ltd in 2005 offering first-class rejuvenation treatments, following the accomplishment of recognised aesthetic qualifications. In February 2007 Jan co-directed a small establishment in Aberdeen, which, with her efforts, became recognised on a national level. It was the only Scottish finalist in the category of ‘best small clinic’ in the National Aesthetic Medicine Awards 2008. Jan then progressed to re-open her existing company, Innocent Aesthetics Ltd where she offers new treatments ranging from injectable skin rejuvenation, dermal fillers, hyperhydrosis, semi-permanent make-up, laser hair removal, IPL facial rejuvenation and thread vein treatments, radio frequency for fat emulsification and skin tightening, medical micro-dermabrasions, and Environ® skin care. With Jan’s level of expertise and experience you can guarantee to receive the latest treatments, using ground-breaking injectable products and advanced aesthetic equipment. Jan works in the pleasant surroundings of Kirkwood Fyfe which has been approved by the Health Care Commission, and Investors in People. She works closely with vascular and plastic surgeons who specialise in surgical rejuvenation, including blephroplastys and permanent fillers. Surgeons and nursing staff agree that all clients should be reviewed before any Botox® treatment is undertaken, therefore a personal free consultation will be given prior to treatment. This helps Jan ensure that the correct treatment is administered to ensure clients’ expectations are met. With her desire for aesthetic perfection, Jan achieved her Diploma in the application of semi-permanent make-up being trained by Debra Robson Lawrence and then furthering her training in advanced techniques with Gail Proudman of Finishing Touches. Jan offers treatments for the eyebrows, eye-liner, lip-liner and lip blush, and uses a wide range of fantastic colours. His books are entertaining to read and the Les Halles cook book is a must-have. Which kitchen utensil do you find indispensable? My knives, to be honest. What in your career has made you most proud? Being part of the 2 rosette winning team at Copthorne Hotel was nice, but holding down a busy head chef job and being a dad to my nine-monthold son Keane, makes me feel pretty proud. Both jobs are hard but very rewarding. What was your biggest kitchen disaster? Not so much a disaster, but our opening canapé night at Number 1. Trying to do that while around us the kitchen was still being built wasn’t very practical but we got through it. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? If I wasn’t a chef, I would have liked to be a graphic designer. What’s your favourite comfort food? Fresh Scrabster cod in bread crumbs, homemade chips & mushy peas or mince and tatties. Who would you most like to cook for and what would you serve? I’m happy to cook for anyone. I don’t think people should be treated any differently in a restaurant if they are famous. They all pay and deserve the same service as the rest of us, but I’m always a bit nervous when cooking for one of my former head chefs! 26

Name your favourite restaurant and why? Owlies brasserie, formerly on Littlejohn Street. I loved working there as a trainee chef. I miss the smells, flavours and the chefs. I’m hopefully going to the Fat Duck in September, so that should be good.

WINE THERAPY
Wine: Aroma-therapy My wine choice is very much influenced by the time of year, my mood and food. This time of year, I look more to white wines, especially those made from aromatic grapes. My wine cupboard is stocked up with Riesling, Gruner Veltiner and Gewürztraminer. They work well with seafood and oriental flavours and are great for sharing.

Marlin’s Coffee Shop Recently opened by 28-year-old William Marlin after a complete revamp, Marlin’s is Aberdeen’s newest coffee shop. Based in The Galleria shopping centre, it’s modern, trendy and elaborate with the friendly, personal welcome that large coffee chains lack.
Club Special, which is a hot steak and caramelised onion baguette. In the salad department the Insalata Caprese is a mouth-watering concoction of tomato with mozzarella cheese, fresh basil and a balsamic infusion.
The £40,000 renovation has transformed it from a country pine kitchen to an elegant space for coffee and light dining. The décor is a beautiful mix of blacks and rich chocolates, coupled with ornate flock wallpaper and ebony chandeliers.
Marlin’s offers either a sit-in or a takeaway service and, based in the city centre, it can also prepare corporate lunches for nearby offices. Its location in The Galleria is a great place for business meetings, catching up with friends and colleagues or for just a relaxing afternoon.

The recipe for a great coffee shop is, of course, great coffee and here they serve only ‘illy’, which is one of the most favoured brands. William himself is a coffee master, having trained in London with a large restaurant chain. He then became a coffee trainer and travelled all over Scotland passing on his specialist skills. At Marlin’s there’s an excellent selection of coffee, including Gingerbread Latte, Macchiato and Mochacciao, and if tea is your preferred tipple you have the choice of regular loose breakfast, de-caf, Red Bush and an assortment of loose herbal teas. Everything is freshly made using local produce, and the varied menu is available all day, Monday to Saturday, from 9am-5pm.
William wanted to create a place for everyone to enjoy, whether business executive, busy mum, long-lost friend or the retired customer who just likes the odd scone or cake of an afternoon. Above all he wants to keep that personal touch and give his customers somewhere to go where they can feel relaxed and be welcomed with a friendly smile and greeting. It’s not a Deli it’s a store Hammerton Store, a delightful addition to the west end of Aberdeen, was derived from one woman’s ambition to modernise the 21st-century convenience store. > WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER
Susan Watson opened the shop on Great Western Road three weeks before Christmas with a view to offering the neighbourhood something it seriously lacked. Its simple, fresh exterior has certainly ‘spruced up’ the local area, but it is what you find inside which is the real treat. This is no ordinary convenience store; it stocks an amazing range of everyday products, which are mainly produced locally and there’s a superb range of organic goods.

To mention just a few items; plain root vegetables, bakery goods, meats and organic fruits are supplied by local companies on Collieston, Ballater, Cults, Stonehaven and Foveran.

There are lots of dry goods on sale here too, many of which are from small suppliers, who produce their own chutneys and sauces. It’s not just food; there are beers and wines, cleaning products, beauty products and even organic pet treats. Susan, a graduate of Grays School of Art, has been involved in catering for Under
the Hammer, The Lemon Tree and The Foyer restaurant said: “It’s not a deli, this is a convenience store where you can get everything, but that doesn’t mean the products have to be poor quality. Sourcing good products and committed suppliers is essential. It doesn’t have to be local but where I can, I bring in local produce. My aim is that it becomes part of the daily routine for people trying to avoid the big supermarket.” Susan decided to go ahead with the project after spending some time getting back to basics with food and cooking. She would go out walking with her dogs and come home with delights from nature’s garden and then spend time looking up old recipes and finding different ways to cook. She said: “I was always trying to avoid supermarkets, but I just couldn’t get basic, fresh ingredients near my home and I felt really passionate about that. A store like this is just what the neighbourhood needed.” It took Susan almost six months to renovate the premises, which for years had been a licensed convenience store. She’d been looking for the right place and this was in the perfect location. She could visualise the end product and has created a spacious and pleasant shopping experience. Here you can really stock up on almost anything you need, which means that, if desired, you could avoid the dreaded trudge round a massive over-sized supermarket and get everything from your friendly neighbourhood store. JEROME JEROME (Lunch) Relatively new to the Aberdeen restaurant scene is Jerome Jerome, a restaurant and bar occupying two floors of number 8 Golden Square. Stained wooden floors and plenty of original features give character to the restaurant as does an exhibition of Cuban photographs taken by a student from Grays School of Art. The mellow vibes of Sting were pitched at just the right level in the background. The unique selling point of this venture is the emphasis on its use of organic produce, locally sourced and seasonal wherever possible. I’ve started to buy more organic food over the last few months, and it would be great to see more background about this and a celebration of the suppliers on the menu. At the time of our visit, just one organic wine was listed but the list is in the process of being revamped and owner 32
Jerry hopes that soon 80% of wines listed will be organic. The well-priced 14 bin list has some interesting choices including a Lorentz Gewürztraminer from Alsace, a Bouchon Gigondas from the Rhone and my choice for lunch, Stringy Brae Riesling from the Clare Valley in Australia, tangy with lime and zesty grapefruit and apple. All, bar one, of the wines are available by the 175ml glass, and a wine preservation system ensures that they are served in optimum condition, although the traditionalist in me would ask for a proper wine glass rather than the open tumblers next time. The restaurant was quiet on this Wednesday lunch time and we were invited to choose a table by our attentive waitress. The concise lunch menu leans towards North African/ Mediterranean flavours and was one of those where I could have eaten everything. I began with a simple light salad of rocket, avocado, watercress and fennel for £3.95 and across the table a warming spiced
sweet potato and aubergine soup was well received at £2.95. I was tempted by the buffalo steak burger but settled on Jerome Jeromes Chicken Tagine (£8.95). The chicken baked with a mildly spiced creamy sauce, set atop fluffy flavourful raisin couscous. My other half was enjoying a change from his usual tuna mayo lunchtime sandwich in the form of lamb koftas (£7.95), lifted with cumin and with a nutty brown rice. Both dishes had a comforting feel good factor and were further enhanced by good roasted, herbed veggies. It’s great to have a restaurant in the area going down the organic route. Both lunch and dinner menus have plenty of interesting choices. Jerome Jerome 8 Golden Square, Aberdeen Tel: 01224 648525 www.jerome-jerome.co.uk
THE CARRON ART DECO RESTAURANT (Dinner) I can’t explain why, but I am really drawn to Art Deco so the chance to visit a restaurant housed in a great example of the style was too good to miss. The building is striking, and as you walk up the path, it’s like stepping back in time. The Carron dates back to 1937 and was restored to its former glory in the late 1990s. For the last four years, it’s been under the ownership of chef/proprietor Robert Cleaver. The welcome is warm with Robert emerging from the kitchen to talk guests through items on the menu and specials blackboard; his passion for food is obvious. Service throughout the evening was spot on with friendly, well informed staff. There’s a good choice of fish, seafood, meat and game with locally sourced produce making a frequent appearance. At lunch-time a lighter menu is available. Our boys, aged 9 and 12, were with us. There is a children’s menu and
many dishes from the main menu can be served in smaller portions and adapted. Ours went for homemade pizza and chicken parmigiana. The wine list carries around 30 well chosen wines which complement the menu. We went for a half bottle of refreshingly crisp Guy Sagent Sancerre £15.50 with touches of gooseberry, elderflower and lime. We dived into the homemade bread – cheese, onion and smoked paprika and cumin with sunflower seeds. I began with a velvety, rich local crab soup. Finished with a hint of sherry it was perfectly balanced (£4.45). My other half opted for beetroot deep fried in rosemary batter with a chilli mango mayo. As we have a supply of beetroot in the garden, I’m now being encouraged to ‘try this at home’. The natural sweetness of the beetroot contrasts well with the batter and the mayo. (£4.65)
risotto was creamy and rich and the plump scallops perfectly seared. (£16.50) Next to me was a delicious melt-in-themouth pot roast of Aberdeen Angus beef, finished with a rich drambuie gravy and accompanied by a haggis, neep and tattie tower. (£11.50) We shared dessert - again from the specials board – a chocolate fudge cheesecake with a passion fruit and mango coulis (£4.85). The base was crunchy and the topping light. It was an enjoyable finale to a great meal in unique, atmospheric surroundings. The Carron Art Deco Restaurant, 20 Cameron Street, Stonehaven, AB39 2HS 01569760460 www.carron-restaurant.co.uk

MY BIG BREAK
My big break When Paul Girvan was a young lad he used to get up at 5.30am so he could practice his golf for two hours before school. > WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER
The 42-year-old is now Director of Golf at Aberdeen’s Kings Links Golf Centre and his love of golf is still as strong as it was when he was a schoolboy.
Paul jokes about missing his English Higher exam because he was playing in the British Amateurs at Turnberry. He recalls his mum wishing him all the best when he left in the morning with no intention of going to the exam at all. When she asked him how he got on that night he told her it was a bit windy but he played well!
Born in Ayr in the west of Scotland, his father was a keen golfer so he caught the bug at an early age. Paul said: “I just ate, drank and lived golf. I started to caddy for my dad when I was around four or five years old, and then when I was big enough and strong enough I began playing properly when I was about seven.”
The pinnacle of his career came when he was awarded Walker Cup honours at Sunningdale in Berkshire. He continued: “I’ve never heard my dad so happy than when I phoned to tell him about the Walker Cup, but he could never watch me play golf; he couldn’t even watch it on TV, he just got too nervous.”
When he joined the golf club his first handicap was 12 – by the age of 15 he was a scratch golfer.
Paul was friends with Colin Montgomery and they ended up playing together in the Walker Cup. “I grew up with Colin, we were buddies. We played together in the Walker Cup – if it wasn’t singles, we would generally be paired up. At the time he was rated No 1 and I was rated No 2 but our careers have taken different paths. He had that bit extra,
After school it was back to the practice ground to hit more balls for another two hours – so it’s no wonder that the sport has dominated his entire career.
A year later his golf career tee’d off when he was selected for Scottish Boys Home Internationals, earning his 1st cap. In total he represented Scotland 40 times between the ages of 16 and 20. 36
he had self confidence and self belief and we all knew he would be something special.” Paul turned professional in 1988 and went to Tour School with ‘Monty’. He got to the final qualifying stage for the European Tour, but disaster struck when he fractured his ankle while walking on the beach forcing him to pull out of the competition – and that was the lowest point of his career. Following that, he built himself up again to finish 12th in the Tartan Tour in 1989 after which he made a career decision to leave Ayr. In July 1990 he moved to Aberdeen and began working at the Kings Links Golf Shop prior to the centre opening in September. He became Director of Golf in 2004.

The ins and outs of inheritance tax
Every growing business that recognises its people as its biggest asset also acknowledges when the time is right to take its internal systems to a new level.
By Gary Walker, St. James’s Place Wealth Management
That’s exactly the natural progression experienced by Aberdeenbased Performance Improvements (PI) Group Ltd, which recently welcomed the appointment of its first HR Manager, Simon Williams, formerly of PSL.
It’s claimed that around 40,000 financial estates a year are subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT) and, according to HM Revenue and Customs, the government made £3.5bn from this last year. (IHT is the tax on your estate – everything you own at the time of your death, minus what you owe, with certain exemptions.) But you only pay it if your assets are worth more than the threshold, which for 2007/2008 is £300,000. Anything above that is taxed at 40%. Your house is classed as a taxable asset and higher house prices mean that more estates are becoming liable to IHT. The most significant exemption covers anything you leave to a spouse or civil partner, as long as both of you are UK domiciled. But if you leave them everything it means the surviving spouse will then be liable to extra IHT when they die. The threshold for married couples and civil partners has recently been doubled – from £300,000 to £600,000. However, this is only if the Will allowance is passed to the surviving spouse. Otherwise, if a proportion of the allowance has been used up, then a percentage equal to that proportion can be used by the surviving spouse. To further reduce IHT there are other exemptions including money left to UK charities, political parties and some national institutions, including the National Trust. Some lifetime gifts are exempt, such as wedding gifts up to £5,000 to a child, £2,500 to a grandchild or £1,000 to anyone else, as well as small gifts of up to £250 a year to as many people as you like.
Managing Director Steve Wright says the 50% growth enjoyed by the Group last year commanded a new approach to how it looks after its people and prepares for further rapid growth.“Last year was an exceptional year for growth, with a considerable number of people being recruited and inducted. Keen not to lose the Group IIP culture, we decided to create the new post of HR Manager,” explained Steve. “Simon was the perfect candidate. He understood and shared the values of the business, is very pragmatic, and fits in well with our culture. He came in with a fresh pair of eyes and has shown considerable enthusiasm for the role and our potential for the future.” It’s a coming of age for the PI Group - an independent group of companies providing specialist products, services, training and complete turnkey solutions to the oil and gas sector. In 2000, PI was named Grampian Business Start-up of the Year, and now has offices in England and Holland. It employs more than 100 people, 70 of whom are based at its Aberdeen headquarters, and it services business as far afield as North Africa, South America and Azerbaijan. Lynne McIntyre is a modern day Cinderella - she designs exclusive ball gowns and bridal wear, yet she has never been belle of the ball as she’s yet to be invited to a posh affair! > WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER
The 42-year-old, who moved to Aberdeen from Peterhead five years ago, launched Exquisite Designs last year and runs the business from her home in the city’s Devonshire Road. She’s always had a love of art and design, and even from a young age she would create the odd piece of clothing for herself. Lynne began in retail when she opened a shop in Peterhead specialising in selling off-the-peg bridal, ball gowns and prom dresses, but she felt it was the wrong location and the pressure of living in Aberdeen and travelling for two hours every day became too much so she gave it up. She then decided to return to her love of design and now creates, from her home in the city, made-to-measure dresses in any colour or style desired . Lynne said: “I’m not a girly girl really as I haven’t had the chance. I’ve got three boys but I always wanted a girl, so maybe that’s where my desire to dress everyone else up comes from. I’ve always loved fancy, frilly dresses even though I’ve never worn one myself!” 38

Lynne works with her clients to develop a design on paper and co-ordinates with a local dressmaker to develop the perfect dress for each individual. She also stocks a number of sample dresses so people can get a feel for exactly what they want. She continued: “The samples just give clients the ability to choose the top from one and the bottom from another, decide whether they want strapless or cap sleeves, long or short. We can tweak the whole style so the end product is the perfect outfit. The sample dresses can also be ordered as they are in a standard size. People often take in photos of their dream dress and it’s my passion to design it from there, get the basic dress made and embellish it by hand.” In addition to dresses, Lynne also stocks a good range of jewellery, evening bags; tiaras and hand-made flower girl head bands, many of which can be bought directly from the website. Lynne doesn’t concentrate on designing on a full-time basis as she has other work commitments from Monday to Friday. It seems the term ‘busy mum’ was created with Lynne in mind – on top of working full-time and running a business from home, she is involved in local clubs for photography and Scottish Country Dancing, she goes to the gym and is just about to start studying Company Law for Accounting! Add to that a variety of children’s after school commitments and all the running around that requires - the thought is more than enough to tire you out. Lynne just laughs it off and says she likes to keep busy! She also plans to secure a place at Grays School of Art later this year to continue her studies in Fashion and Textiles. In the meantime, she is determined to make a success of her hobby and claims that it doesn’t matter what size or shape - anyone can have the perfect frock. ‘Absolutely Fabulous’
career choice
One of the world’s most highly regarded businessmen Bill Gates was quoted as saying, “If I was down to my last five dollars, I would spend it on PR”, yet PR as a profession is still widely misunderstood. For a person who is looking for a fast-paced, rewarding and stimulating job, PR is an exciting career choice says Annabel Sall, Director of specialist communications firm ThinkPR. When PR is mentioned, the image of Patsy and Eddie from Absolutely Fabulous may spring to mind and although the ‘gin and tonic’ cliché is still with us, PR has definitely come of age. Annabel explained: “The great benefit of working in a consultancy like ThinkPR is that we service a range of companies who operate in many different industries. One moment we are writing a press release on a multi-million pound contract win and dealing with media across the globe, the next we are launching a new training initiative, targeting young people in the area.” It is now largely accepted and trusted in its various markets - in fact, 90% of the top 50 UK companies use an external PR consultancy to manage their communications.“The industry has really matured, and we’ve seen our client base increase due to business owners grasping that PR can help their company grow. Our team consists of former journalists and corporate communications specialists - all of whom have a degree in a related subject. This isn’t essential but due to the competitive environment graduates will encounter, anyone who wants to get into PR should get as much practical experience as possible.” PR is a popular career path, with the industry ranking in the top three career choices of graduates. If you want a varied and exciting career, public relations may be for you. Think PR, 13 Rubislaw Terrace, Aberdeen AB10 1WE Tel: 01224 562825 www.thinkpr.co.uk 40

While our fashion showcase is testament to the burgeoning shopping scene in Aberdeen city, it’s clear that there are exclusive gems to be found in the often quirky boutiques and specialist stores in the outlying areas. Readers in both the city and in the towns and villages of Aberdeenshire continue to contact Trend with positive feedback. Their comments suggest that Trend is a winning formula, so please keep your messages coming as we welcome your thoughts about issues you’d like us to cover. We’re all ears! AMBIANCE By Karen McKimmie
In the last issue of Trend I warned against the dangers of overindulging in new trends, but with the launch of the new collections at London Design Week last month, it is all too easy to be enticed.
Instead of entirely revamping your home I would advise introducing the new products as accessories. These can be changed as the trends shift, and it’s the most cost effective way to update the look of a room and not feel guilty about doing it again when the new collections are out next year! Cushions – Luxurious printed and plain silks in rich colours are in abundance. Choose a fabric such as Osborne & Little’s new Serang Silk – embroidered florals and stripes in jewel colours – and have them made up. Or, many companies like Designers Guild, have introduced Home Collections with cushions and throws readymade in their new fabrics.

Lampshades – Can transform the look of an old lamp and change the ambience of a room. There is a multitude of styles and colours available on the high street. But if you really want to do something different, we can have them made in a wallpaper or fabric of your choice.
Stools – I like to use small cube stools in a room. They are useful to have as extra seating but upholstered in a contrast colour/ texture or in a rich velvet design, they can add a spark to a room.
“
Instead of entirely revamping your home I would advise introducing the new products as accessories.
”
Wallpapers – We are still seeing lots of flock and pattern in the new collections. One of the most interesting is from Elitis – oversized circles and heads and 3dimensional effects. These can be a bit overwhelming if used all round the room but look stunning as feature walls or even framed like a huge ‘painting’ on one wall. Many companies are designing images, hung in panels specifically for one wall – a more tasteful version of the 1970’s mural! Have a look at the new collections and be inspired, I am! Home improvements A wise investment? With the ever increasing demand for property outstripping the realistic rate of inflation, many home owners have only one option to consider; develop what you have. > WORDS BY TOMMY MCCARTHY, LEATHAN PROPERTY.COM LTD Although home improvements will almost guarantee an increase to the value of your property, don’t become complacent with the many issues that you have to consider. How to establish the cost Your architect may give an indication as to the industry rates for warrant fee application. This however is a ‘guesstimate’ at this stage, due to rising cost in materials, but is a good starting point to allow you to enter into negotiation with your builder for budget purposes. Although you may have a cost in mind, be prepared for contingencies. Sticking to a Budget We advise all our clients to gain a clear understanding of their particular requirements ie; choice of tiles, timber finish specification, floor coverings etc, as these all have a bearing on the fluctuation of budget. If this stage is given full consideration by the client it will allow the project to run to a more realistic cost. This is one more aspect to the overall project although a crucial dictator as to the success of the job. 44
Schedule of works Dialogue between client, builder and architect is paramount in assuring a cohesive and efficient project. This is probably the most controversial aspect of home improvements which, if not managed correctly can create unnecessary friction. The builder can establish a clear and consistent schedule of works based on the information supplied by the architect and client. Project Management It is vital to establish who is going to manage your development. It is often assumed that the builder acts as project manager. However this is often not the case and should therefore be determined early on. Should you wish to be adventurous and manage the project yourself, things to consider are: • Notification of intention to start works to relevant authorities. • Co-ordination of all trades. • Delivery and safe storage of materials • Regular and necessary meetings with building inspector • Contingencies for poor weather and unforeseen circumstances
Time & Budget Chris and Angela Chalmers, when developing their home, started off with a budget in mind based on architects’ quotes ranging from £1000-£1400 per square metre. As a professional and growing family with baby number six on the way, their main goal was to have family room renovations completed by Christmas. Despite the pressure of poor weather conditions and the announcement of 21 for Christmas dinner, due to careful planning and open communications with architect, builder and client, the development sustained punctuality. In a limited 12 weeks; a three car garage, hedge lined fences and grounds were demolished and replaced with a renovated five bedroomed, four bathroomed contemporary home, with ambient decking/patio area and hot tub. It shows that with careful planning and following the right steps, it can be achieved not only in budget but on target. If you have a project in mind but are unsure where to start, consulting someone with practical experience ranging from everyday property developments to commercial project management may be the right option for you.

Aberdeen’s property market springs back to life in time for summer An insight by Kevin Davidson, principal partner of K.W.A.D 2008’s early year activity went as expected; with first-time buyers returning to the market in January, deals have been concluding quickly, which in turn allowed those selling to make offers on properties further up the ladder. By the start of March, most of the properties which, as a result mainly of the credit crunch, had been sticking for four or five months, had SOLD signs put up outside. The late spring/early summer period is traditionally the busiest time in the property market with a large number of prospective purchasers starting to seriously look for a new property. Whilst this year should be no exception, I do not believe the funny money being bid over the asking prices of last year should be as prevalent. A sense of realism returned to the market early this year and we should see that continue throughout this period. I envisage that any exception to this rule might show in properties in the £500,000+ bracket. Lack of supply and competition will be fierce amongst the city’s high rollers so people in this market should expect to see prices of at least 30% over asking price being achieved in this sector. Retail Renaissance SHOPPING IN STONEHAVEN
For shoppers jaded by Aberdeen’s plethora of shops offering three quid t-shirts and fashion that lasts for five minutes, Stonehaven has much to offer. > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS
Dunnotter Wines & Spirits
Aly Bali
The town centre is compact, with good parking and a wealth of small independent shops that offer upscale shopping without upscale prices. Over the past year, a number of new shops have emerged which have made shopping in Stonehaven a real pleasure for those who appreciate design, quality and individuality. First up is Chocolate Monkeys on Allardice Street which has rapidly become Stonehaven’s leading hair salon, marked out by its quirky yet sumptuous décor and the friendliness and expertise of the staff, led by Vince Barnes.
Purdie’s of Market Square and is an ideal starting point when shopping for gifts. It’s part of Donna Pirie’s retail mini-empire which includes Purdie’s Flowers and Mimi’s, which is a great place to catch up on gossip over a coffee and cake. Purdie’s offers cards and gifts with a great selection of funky interior products and jewellery. In the past couple of months, Donna has branched out into shoes with an outstanding selection of party shoes. Aly Bali is a fantastic contemporary jewellery gallery, which was opened in November by Alison Phillips. You’ll find it on Barclay Street. Alison, who has a great eye for interesting pieces, sources stock from as far afield as Denmark, Bali and Brazil, including many one-off pieces. The shop operates a clever wish-list system where you can note down what you’d like

Parade
Parade
Almost opposite Aly Bali is Parade and Kid’s Parade. Parade started out in Alford and this is Angela McArdle’s second branch, with more to follow in the future. Parade offers fabulous home furnishings and accessories. You’ll find everything from beds to bird houses, from strings of starfish to vases, hand-made soaps, dining tables and chairs, vases, prints and gifts. Kid’s Parade has a good selection of nursery furniture, clothes, traditional toys and amazingly cute sorbet coloured leather baby shoes. McHardy’s in Market Square is simply one of the best butchers in Scotland, and often features in good food guides in The Guardian and other national publications. Head up the hill to Dunnotter Wines & Spirits on Evan Street next door to the Carron Restaurant. Owner Sandy Kennaway offers wines and spirits from off the beaten track, and is well placed to make recommendations since he has tasted everything he sells. His knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious and you may well come away with a couple more bottles than you intended to buy.
Not all Stonehaven’s retail gems are new shops, though. One of the oldest stores is also one no visitor to Stonehaven should miss. Guilanotti’s on Evan Street was founded in 1899 by the great grandfather of present owner, Marjorie Stephen. Guilanotti’s is paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth, as it has probably the best selection of confectionery in the Northeast. It’s a treasure trove of old-fashioned favourites such as soor plooms, white mice, macaroon or tablet and carries some of the best hand-made chocolates available throughout Europe. And for when all this retail therapy has left you famished, head down to the sea. Mollie’s Café is on the beach front so the great food is matched by the great views. There can’t be many places where the menu is so attractive and well priced that there’s a queue out the door on a Saturday lunchtime but Mollie’s is worth the wait. Mollie’s serves a full breakfast from 9-3 each day and offers a well-chosen lunch menu. The ever changing menu is supplemented by a range of delicious home-made desserts and home bakes, as well as Lavazza coffees and a fair selection of teas. All in all, Stonehaven makes for a great day’s shopping. 49
BlankCanvass This spring sees the unveiling of three exhibitions in the North-east by Hazel McAllister. > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
After bringing up her three children and travelling to the Middle and Far East with her husband’s work, former dental receptionist Hazel decided to formally pursue her passion for painting. She responded to a newspaper advertisement for the Independent Painters Workshop, and her tutor encouraged her to exhibit her work at His Majesty’s Theatre, where it appeared for five consecutive years. Focusing on the subject matter of North-east places of interest, Hazel was soon selling successfully. “I then became a bit stuck and felt my work was not moving anywhere. I was dissatisfied and 50
keen to experiment,” explained Hazel, of Craigton Road. “I then enrolled with the Open College of the Arts, which is affiliated to the Open University. It opened up a whole range of possibilities in lots of areas that I previously thought wouldn’t interest me, such as abstract.” A bold painter, Hazel combines realism work with abstract pieces. Oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel and collage also bear her hallmark. Hazel, who continues to experiment with style, has sold a number of pieces to foreign visitors to the North-east, and her paintings hang in homes in the US and in Iceland.
A licensing company in Hampshire recently commissioned her to produce a series of four floral art works, which will be reproduced on everything from letterheads and cards, to ceramics and textiles. The firm was drawn to her work as a result of her presence at the annual North-east Open Studios event, which features the work of 100 artists over 10 days at the Marine Rescue Institute in Stonehaven in September. Now in the fifth year of her Open College of Arts course, Hazel plans to complete a further advanced year while continuing to sell and exhibit. Her paintings fetch between £200 and £1500. See Hazel McAllister’s work at the Outward Bound Gallery at Marywell, Cove, throughout April. The Milton of Crathes Gallery will preview her exhibition on May 2, and a second preview of her work will be unveiled at the Carby Art Gallery, Cotton Street, Aberdeen, on May 3. CULTURE
The Bacchae heads for Aberdeen Award-winning Scots actor Alan Cumming is to appear at His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen, in June in the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of The Bacchae. > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
It’s one of the greatest and wildest of the Greek tragedies and he plays the icon and hedonist god Dionysus in the new version of the Euripides classic by David Greig, from a literal translation by Ian Ruffell. The production comes to HMT for only four performances from Thursday to Saturday, June 19 to 21. This landmark production by the National Theatre of Scotland garnered all the headlines at last year’s Edinburgh International Festival and sold out before its first performance. COMPETITION To win a pair of front stall tickets for the opening night on June 19 and backstage passes to meet the cast, email your answer to the following question to: info@trendmagazine.co.uk, with ‘theatre’ in the subject box. Include your name, address, contact numbers and tell us where you picked up your copy of Trend. Terms & conditions apply.
Visionary director John Tiffany (Black Watch) has re-imagined Euripides’ ancient tragedy as a spectacularly bold, colourful piece of contemporary theatre. The language is modern, the action fast-moving and the themes of repression, sexuality and freedom of expression are as relevant today as ever. "This production tells this classic story with a contemporary twist and there are some very memorable moments - not least Alan Cumming's entrance at the start of the play - some amazing special effects and some great soul singing,” said Performing Arts chief executive Duncan Hendry. "It is not often that we get the chance to see a Hollywood star, in a fantastic piece of theatre, delivered by our national theatre company.”

Music to die for MUSIC REVIEWS
words by CLAIRE CLARK & SOPHIA SCHWAN
Tunes for a Girls Night in
Maroon 5 – It Won’t Be Soon Before Long (£11.00) Clean and crisp is the new sound that Maroon 5 present in this sleek but surprisingly not overproduced album. This cool and flirty CD kicks off with the punchy ‘If I Never See Your Face Again’ and ‘Makes Me Wonder.’ From hip shakers, the album flows into more soulful, mellow tunes such as ‘Back at Your Door,’ returning to sexy rockedged tracks like ‘Until You’re Over Me.’ Although it is flashy and catering to the masses, the album works wonderfully as a whole.
Working Out
Justice - Cross / † (£8.00) This album is exciting from the word go with fat squelchy beats, synths and electro clashes. From the hugely prolific and powerful 37-second intro of Genesis, † crashes through the anthems, as you would expect from electro revolutionaries from Paris. The now club classic D.A.N.C.E combines a poppy beat, with nice synths and kids singing the chorus. The album then progresses into the massive Phantom. From the off set, Genesis sets you up for the rest of the album, and gets you pumped for your workout.
Tunes for Lazing in the Bath
Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun (£6.99) It's not a new release, but a total gem from one of the most credible women of the soul and funk scene. Her voice is smooth yet husky, and easily transgresses a multitude of tempos, styles and themes throughout Mama's Gun. Her second studio 52
album opens with the bass heavy and the strong vocal entries of Penitentiary Philosophy, before dropping the pace to Didn't Cha Know demonstrating Badu's ability to adapt her voice into a creamy, sultry purr, with absorbing lyrics to boot. Perfect for reflecting on the day's events.
Music to Drive to
Crazy P - A Night On Earth (£11.00) The third album from Crazy P has peaks and troughs in tempo, and their passion for their music is evident in both the styling and lyrical content. Featuring live instrumentation, a mix of soulful, sweet and sultry vocals and tight production, this album embraces the 70s and 80s with disco, house, jazz funk and electro fusion. An amazing feel-good album, perfect for Sunday sunshine motoring. All available from HMV, 113 Union Bridge, Aberdeen, AB11 6BG Tel: 0844 561 1334
Music for a Candelit Dinner
Zero 7 - Simple Things (£10.00) An utterly chilled and sensual album. Rolling and flowing melodies embodied by tinkling keyboard keys, violins, and soft guitar strokes create a textured and utterly romantic atmosphere. Instrumental tracks are succeeded by songs accentuated by passionate, vibrant and soul influenced vocals that still perfectly manage to be relaxing and gentle. Although providing a perfect and potent wave of sounds, ‘Simple Things’ is an ideal album to use as a mood setter. Available from Zavvi, 133 Union Street, Aberdeen, AB21 2BH Tel: 01224 213050
Red, red wine
There must have been a bit of a mix up at Trend Towers, because I seem to have been given an assignment that doesn’t, on the face of it, involve any immediate danger to life and limb. > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS
Not only is there an absence of mud, heavy machinery, heights or flames, but I get to stay indoors and have a nice sit down for a couple of hours. I’m told they’ll even throw in a few drinks. Now, when it comes to liquids, I’m a woman of simple tastes. I drink still mineral water or champagne and that’s pretty much it. I’ll settle for a bottle of cava, and I went through a phase of drinking neat absinthe in the bath, but that’s best glossed over. I’m off to one of Wine Uncorked’s tasting courses. These are run by Carol Brown who has been steeped in teaching people more about wine for 12 years. Coming from a hospitality management and food retailing background, she also pens Trend’s food and drink section and runs certified courses on behalf of the Wine and Sprit Education Trust.
The venue is the Atholl Hotel. There are 15 people on this eight-week course a sort of Round the World in 80 Bottles and tonight we’re tasting wines from the length and breadth of Italy. This involves a fair amount of sloshing, sniffing and slurpy noises. I think my nose might be malfunctioning because it takes me to the last wine before I can start to detect the aromas that the rest of the group picks up. Wafts of dried cherries, strawberries, melon, mossy and flint pass me by. I start to wonder who goes around sniffing at rocks anyway. Carol makes everything accessible but informative and flits round the table discussing tastes, colours and tannins. By the end, my nose can pick up aromas and I’m able to buy wine based on something other than how much I like the picture on the label. “My desert island wine would be a Henriques & Henriques Madeira. It was over 200 years old and it was absolutely stunning. It had so much life left in it and you couldn’t help wondering about the people who made it all those years ago,” confesses Carol. Despite Carol’s best efforts, I’ll be sticking to Veuve Cliquot on my desert island but at least I’ll have a much better idea of what to buy for passing guests. 53
Fast and Furious Back in the ‘80s when the rally world was dominated by Group B cars, Audi had the S1, driven in World Rally Championship events by a German called Walter Rohrl. The S1 had in excess of 600 bhp and to see Walter drive this machine at maximum attack through a forest stage was simply mind-blowing. The downside to the Audi S1 was its appearance – it was so ugly!
Fast forward to 2008 and I have the pleasure of driving Audi’s new R8 and from every angle it is stunning. The R8 has its engine mounted longitudinally directly behind the cockpit of the comparatively lightweight 1560 kg aluminium-bodied Audi sports car. The high-revving V8 petrol engine delivers 420 PS and contributes to an exceptional 54
power-to-weight ratio of 269 PS per tonne. Spinning freely to its 8250 rpm limit this acclaimed unit punches the R8 through the 62 mph barrier in just 4.6 seconds and in the right conditions can carry it to a top speed of 187 mph – an unprecedented high for a roadgoing Audi. The car on test had the optional race inspired R tronic sequential shift gearbox with joystick and paddle controls, which delivers exceptional rapid gear changes. The interior is beautifully finished in fine nappa leather with discreet stitching. Also worthy of a mention is the three spoke, flat-bottomed, leather covered, multifunction, steering wheel which fits in one’s hands like a pair of racing gloves. I took the opportunity to drive the R8 to RAF Leuchars to photograph it alongside
the Tornado F3, even against a Fighter Jet the R8 looks awesome. The F3’s spec is something else; 0 – 60 in 6 secs, 0 – 170 in 12 secs, maximum speed 1452 mph. The F3 Jet came into service in 1986 just around the time Walter Rohrl would have been hurling the magnificent Audi S1 through the forest stages. Back to the R8, on road the Audi lives up to all its press and to those of you who have never driven a mid-engined sports car, you have missed out on a truly magical experience. Audi’s unique Quattro system keeps the car neutral at all times, only when severely provoked will it show a little over-steer. The Audi R8 kindly donated by Mr John Clark, Audi Aberdeen & Dundee – Price starts from £78,195 Words by David Gillanders Former 1987 British & 1995 Scottish Rally Champion Photograph taken by Nicole Gillanders
Gadgets Dell XPS £729.99 (Comet) With its intel dual processing, long lasting battery life and higher graphic quality the Dell XPS has become the number two gaming computer in the world. Its improved features and high speed performance along with its own finger print reading security system means it is great for people on the move but also equates to a high price bracket. Although a favourite among the gaming community this computer also offers all the necessary features for someone looking for a sleek, efficient and security focused laptop however the high price is more cost effective for gamers using all the facilities.
A perfect purchase for those into virtual reality, however technophobes and “facebookers” should invest in a cheaper alternative.
Philips 7FF2 CMI Digital Photo Frame £129 (John Lewis) Although not a brand new prototype to the market, the latest digital photo frame from Philips is one of the most advanced. Its new white sleek design has created a more appeasing appearance and its 1000 photo capacity promotes it to a higher level then competitors.
Although more expensive then similar options, you get what you pay for: and in this case you are getting attractive design, high quality and a great gadget.
LG Viewty KU 990 Price on application (Orange Store) Described by some as the camera version of the iphone, this touch screen mobile phone features a 5 mega pixel camera with built in Bluetooth and fm radio. Viewed as a late bloomer this fairly new product has recently surged in popularity: Its up-to-date and unique graphics are attractive and the high mega pixel capability appeals to the snap happy.
A sleek and interesting phone with the memory function to hold 2-3 movies makes it a fashionable accessory and one that is sure to be the favourite of many.
Nikon D60 £469 (John Lewis) It is advertised as being of “small size but big performance” and that is the perfect description. Lighter then similar products, this camera features dust diminishing facilities and vibration reduction capabilities and to ensure the perfect image the Nikon D60 has a 10.2 mega pixel with high resolution potential.
It is light, fast, compact and user friendly making it the ideal purchase for both experienced photographers and eager amateurs. 55
