Editor’s welcome As you can probably senseTrend has got bigger. We have added an extra 8 pages to your favourite mag and we hope you approve! Rarely does an issue of Trend go by when we don’t meet an inspirational North-east native who’s done something exceptional to change their life. This time, say ‘hola’ to Annie Manson. She bid adios to the big city rat race, uprooted to sun-drenched Andalucia and set up a cookery school within her rustic Spanish home. And there’s also the one-time BBC producer who turned an assignment into a design business with one of her closest
friends. For your chance to win some of their creations, turn to page 58.
weekend break at idyllic Highland retreat, the Lovat.
The Trend team again introduces to our pages the work of a talented pair of young, North-east photographers, who capture the latest in urban chic men and women’s wear on our dramatic fashion spreads.
You’ve given us some great feedback, some of which we’ve carried on page 62, where there’s also an announcement about an exciting new feature to appear in forthcoming issues of your favourite glossy.
Trend wouldn’t be Trend without the chance to win outstanding prizes in our April/May competitions.
Thanks from the team to our contributors, advertisers, distributors and supporters. But most of all, thanks for reading. ‘Til June….
Enjoy a day of blissful pampering at the Marcliffe, one of Scotland’s most luxurious spas, followed by an overnight stay and a divine dinner with your partner.

It’s not often you get the chance to pick up tips from an internationally renowned makeup artist in the comfort of your own home, hence why Rae Mathieson’s services are keenly sought. Rae has worked both nationally and internationally with some of the best cosmetics companies and on high profile ad campaigns. “Most of us are fixated with our bad points and ignore our best features,” explains Rae. “Make up should always enhance and bring out someone’s natural beauty, rather than mask it.” Master classes are available for groups of 4 to 10 people at £30pp, or a one-to-one session at £75. Rae demonstrates how to apply the basics, master occasion make-up or wear current trends. “I work round the group demonstrating each stage on individuals then supervise everyone applying it for themselves.” Clients range from teens keen to learn the 10
basics, to more mature ladies looking to update their make up regime. “Unlike going to a store, there’s no pressure and impartial advice is given. Skin changes over time but recommendations of colour and textures along with learning new techniques can take years off the appearance. Coco Violet:
> words by niKI TENNANT
A FASHIONISTA'S CV
It was a crying shame. A woman whose shoe collection exceeds 100 pairs was never destined to totter along the cobblestones of life as a desk-bound, all-be-it talented web designer. After a decade with various design agencies, a defiant Lou Cooper pressed the Ctrl-Alt-Delete buttons on her keyboard to throw off the shackles of her stressful web creation career. That’s when she set out to weave a new life in adulation of her greatest love: fashion. And aren’t we glad… Renowned for her outlandish sense of style, Lou established Coco Violet in October 2007 on The Green, Aberdeen. “I’d always been obsessed with clothes 14
and fashion, and sourced much of my own wardrobe from the internet, or from the sales rails that most people would disregard,” explained Lou, who for six months combined her quest to establish Coco Violet with her full-time web design job.
Aberdeen the 50s-inspired, handstitched Limb Clothing of London. Wild-west style prom dresses can be specifically tailored to flatter anyone’s figure. And Coco Violet’s new collection of boned vintage-style corsets can reduce the waist by up to 4 ins.
Coco Violet flies in the face of the High Street retail concept. This is an Alice in Wonderland box of trinkets, a marvellously maverick glamorous boudoir.
But Lou wouldn’t be Lou without Coco Violet’s show-stopping collection of shoes.
Go on. Try on its creations. Any devotee of Coco Violet will defy you not to spin around like a little girl in her pink bedroom when no-one’s watching. Lou’s is a concept that is forever evolving. She has introduced to

Owner, Andrew Gordon Butchery & Fine Foods
based on Chattan Place just 5 minutes from Queens Cross, the business is mainly a retail butchers shop specialising in top end quality local meats. The business also supplies various select restaurants, residential nursing homes and pre school nurseries. open until 6.30pm for four nights of the week and open at 7.30am. 28
Who is your right hand butcher’s buddy and why? That’s easy. Our customers and clients are, because without them and their custom and feedback we cannot progress. Which country in the world do you think should be crowned culinary king, and why? Having travelled to a large number of countries and experienced various cuisines I still believe that Scotland has the most to offer in the culinary world, and especially Aberdeenshire for its abundance of naturally grown produce and enthusiastic talented chefs. In your life, who’s the amateur cook you most admire and why? A number of amateur cooks visit my shop to buy produce and have a chat and also attend
the ‘Foodie Night’ demonstrations we do and I admire them all for reviving the Foodie culture and giving it a go. Where did you last dine out and what did you choose? The most recent dining experience I had was at The Santini Bis in Edinburgh while staying at The Grand Sheraton on a visit to some butcheries and delis, I had a fillet steak wrapped in smoked bacon. What’s the most unusual or exotic meat you’ve ever sampled? Supermarket meat - not a pleasant experience at all and not one I would recommend. What’s the most unusual request received from a customer? A sheep's head.
Dragon's Fire Venison Kebab Ingredients: 500g lean diced venison haunch Chilli Oil Crushed mixed chillis Garlic clove Onion Peppers Dark chocolate Fresh salad leaves, guacamole, sour cream, spicy salsa, flour wraps. Wooden or metal skewers (We have our own secret recipe but the above can be used as a base mix for you to get adventurous yourself). Method Place the diced venison haunch in a bowl and cover with chilli oil just so that all the venison has a glazed shine - rape seed based oil is best. Sprinkle crushed mixed chillis over the venison; add a crushed and chopped clove of garlic and a whole finely chopped onion, mix well. Leave to marinade overnight.
If you are well versed with your spices, feel free to add some of your favourites; some people at a little sugar or a tin of cola as well. This encourages the marinade to penetrate the meat and create a tenderising effect. Take a skewer and slide on a chunk of fresh pepper, then add a piece of venison and so on until you have enough to almost fill a skewer. Remember, you have to be able to turn it under the grill or on the bbq. The kebab should take about ten minutes cooking if you keep turning them. Serve with guacamole, sour cream, spicy salsa and fresh mixed leaf salad to eat off the skewer or pack into a flour wrap. Dark chocolate also goes well with venison & chilli and a small pot of melted dark chocolate on the side may be a nice touch for people who wish to give it a go.

Tea or Coffee? > words by carol brown
Falls of Feugh Restaurant and Tea Room Location, location, location – on the banks of the River Dee, by the Falls of Feugh where you can watch the salmon leap. We had walked up a snowy Scolty Hill before our visit, so felt that we had earned our treat! Bright and airy with great views, this popular establishment lists many local suppliers on its menu. Scones are light and crumbly, and the menu also offers an enticing range of cakes, meringues and ginger bread to enjoy alongside a collection of teas and coffees.
Rosie Thistle’s Tea Room Rosie Thistle’s is part of Fenner and Coburn on Thistle Street and I can’t think of anything better than a venue that combines shoes, clothes and handbag shopping with cakes. Afternoon tea is served here. Tablecloths are floral, the cups are china and your selection arrives on a cake stand. Afternoon tea included cream cheese and cucumber, and ham and tomato sandwiches on very fresh bread. On the upper tier was a selection of scones, very pretty fairy cakes, swiss roll and Tunnocks teacakes.

tea and coffee reviews
Walking is by far my favourite form of exercise, and I try to get out most days. My friends are under the impression that my walks always take me past places that are full of cakes and scones; I can’t imagine where they get that idea! However, if I happen to get the urge for a skinny latte, Aberdeen and the surrounding area has an abundance of places to visit, and if on the off chance they offer the aforementioned cakes and scones, well, it would be rude not to indulge wouldn’t it? Here are a few of the places that you might find me enjoying morning coffee or afternoon tea…
Circles Coffee Shop, Mannofield The interior is bright and welcoming in this busy, well located coffee shop. The clientele covers all age ranges and there is a small children’s corner with books. You can relax and make the most of the friendly waitress service. There is always a good selection of cakes, scones and tray bakes which are freshly made on the premises. Coffee is organic, fairtrade and rainforest alliance certified, and there is a wide selection of Ronnefeldt teas and infusions.
Rock Salt and Snails There is always a great buzz to the atmosphere here. From mums with buggies, workers escaping from local offices and girls out walking, Rock Salt has a wide appeal. Be prepared to share tables - it’s all part of the experience. Mugs of coffee are generous and there is always a selection of cakes, muffins and tray bakes. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the deli downstairs before you leave. 40 St Swithin Street Aberdeen T: 01224 200012
The Foodstory The emphasis at the Foodstory is on organic and local produce and it really is a showcase for local suppliers, so do check out the deli selection too. My organic scone came toasted with a dinky pot of wild raspberry jam from Huntly Herbs. Coffee is good organic, rainforest alliance and fairtrade, and there is a temping selection of breakfast rolls and croissants, all of which appeals to both sit in and take-away customers. 22 Rose Street Aberdeen AB10 1UA T: 01224 622293

A piece of cake The cup cake craze inspired by hit TV show Sex and the City is taking Aberdeen by storm. > words by niKI TENNANT
Sisters-in-law Fiona Kozak and Angela Edwards launched Dulcia last summer, after preparing sweet treats such as shortbread on sticks for friends’ children’s birthday parties. “We recognised a gap in the market for something different and decided the time was right to launch our own business,” explained Fiona, who prepares the cakes from her home kitchen in Kingswells. Much of the business partners’ initial work focused on establishing their style, which is quite unique. 32
Dulcia – which Latin scholars will know translates as ‘sweet’ – has adopted the fun mantra: ‘I came, I saw, I ate cake.’ Added Angela: “We feel strongly that as well as tasting good, you eat with your eyes and our presentation is very important to us. We are both quite bubbly and quirky and our cakes are too!” Dulcia’s bespoke cakes are creative masterpieces. Angela and Fiona have created a blackboard cake for a group of teachers, tractors ploughing fields, family
tree cakes featuring caricatures, and even a sugary leopard skin bra. The sisters-in-law – whose offerings include a giant cup cake with 15 servings - guarantee to come up with a quirky idea that’s specially created for the recipient and the occasion. Their creations have included a replica Mini car in honour of a 17-year-old’s birthday gift. Dulcia’s cup cakes are also on sale at Rocksalt & Snails, Max’s in Westhill, Terroir in Cults, and the Ceramic Experience, Broomhill Road. Aspire… to be all you can be When cancer claimed the life of her beloved mum Frances (56), Linda Strachan chose to reappraise the balance of time she devotes to everything she holds dear. Working for a pharmaceutical firm, nurse Linda covered the east of Scotland in a pressurised job that commanded long hours. But when her mum passed away in January last year, the loss gave Linda the impetus to change her life. “Having lost someone so close, I decided to do something that would give me more quality time with my kids, James and Ailidh,” explained Linda.

21st Century Cocktalia... Last month, I took a trip down to Edinburgh for a training session with Tony Conigliaro, International Bartender of the Year for 2009. Run in association with Havana Club, this great workshop focused on the bars and bartenders in old town Havana that were responsible for some of the world’s best classic cocktails.
Bauhaus
Cool for conferences and cocktails
For a booze geek like me it was a really interesting session (the drinking session afterwards wasn’t too shabby either!), and it also reminded me of one of my favourite classic drinks, the Mary Pickford: 50ml x Havana Club 3 year old Rum, 25ml x Freshly Squeezed Pineapple Juice, 10ml x Maraschino Liqueur, 5ml x Grenadine Syrup Shake all ingredients together with ice and double strain into a martini glass. The drink was named after Mary Pickford, the silent film star who was known as ‘America’s Sweetheart’, which was rather strange seeing as she was Canadian! Tony Conigliaro told us of his theory that she was having an affair with Al Capone down in Havana - not sure how long it will take him to prove it though! Sadly, this is not a well known drink up in the North-east, with bartenders or drinkers, but get yourself to a good cocktail bar and try it out; the combination of flavours, along with the texture of the fresh pineapple, make it an absolute winner! Society Bar & Restaurant 150 Union Street, Aberdeen T: 01224 633460 www.societygroup.co.uk
The conference suite offers spacious accommodation for groups of up to thirty delegates in a u-shaped setting, or up to sixty seated theatre-style, with additional break out areas. Not only do the conference facilities boast electronic whiteboards and video conferencing equipment, but it all retracts at the touch of a button, James Bond style, making your events feel more MI5 than MFI. And after a hard day’s meeting and playing with all the high tech gadgetry, why not head down to the bar for a Martini - shaken, not stirred - naturally!

The Bauhaus, Aberdeen’s leading boutique hotel, is fast becoming a landmark of style and comfort in the city centre. Not only is the lobby bar the last word in quiet sophistication, with comfy seats and a cocktail menu that’s fun, frivolous and fabulous, but the hotel is set to open its outstanding new conference facilities at the end of May.

We are family > words by niKI TENNANT
Keeping it in the family is a recurring theme at progressive Aberdeen dental practice, Queens Cross Dental. Principal dentist, Andrew Scott, and wife Ainslie – who is the surgery’s business manager – have recently introduced a convenient and cost-effective system of family check-ups for patients. Explained Ainslie: “Over the years, our six dentists have welcomed mums, together with children, for check-ups. Dads, however, tend to put off their own routine appointments and therefore risk neglecting their dental health. “This new system entitles families to a free child check-up for every adult check-up. Because the whole family can attend and be seen together, it promotes responsible dental health in children from an early age and dispels any myths or fears about visiting the dentist.”
When children see parents attending a dental check-up in a relaxed, contemporary and friendly environment, it sets the precedent for later life. Family check-ups – which Queens Cross Dental also offers to lone-parent families – are available mid-week or on a Saturday. Continued Ainslie: “When children see parents attending a dental check-up in a relaxed, contemporary and friendly environment, it sets the precedent for later life.” At Queens Cross Dental, parents are encouraged to introduce children from the earliest age, regardless of whether their teeth are examined during the visit. By sitting on the chair, meeting the dentist, watching CBeebies on the overhead TV screen and leaving the surgery with stickers, children can familiarise themselves
with an environment in which they will go on to feel comfortable throughout their childhood and adult years. The surgery on Queen Cross Dental’s lower floor has undergone a major facelift following a flood in November last year. The original and most traditional of the practice’s six surgeries has re-opened after a three-month refurbishment project. It has been transformed into a fresh, vibrant and contemporary space, with an overhead TV to promote relaxation during treatments. A fresh approach
to separation
“With more people aiming to resolve the issues arising from the breakdown of relationships amicably, awareness of the options available for handling such important matters is crucial. “Alternative methods of dispute resolution, such as Collaborative Family Law and Mediation, allow separating couples to retain more control over their future, rather than becoming embroiled in protracted negotiations or having Courts impose sometimes unwelcome decisions upon them. “Collaborative Family Law is a solutionorientated method where the parties separating are encouraged to work together, with their Solicitors, to find solutions to
suit their own family circumstances. “The Mediation process differs from Collaborative Law, as the Solicitor/Mediator does not represent either party. The role is an impartial one, with the Mediator assisting separating couples in achieving a peaceful and constructive resolution to a variety of family conflicts and disputes. “Sometimes Court action is inevitable, but it is important that clients are aware that there are alternatives. At Aberdein Considine and Company, our Family Law Department specialises in the full range of methods of dispute resolution and can advise on the most appropriate course of action to suit the individual.” For further information, please contact Ruth on 01224 337471 or email raberdein@acandco.com

Mains of Drum is known for the quality of its plants and the care lavished on them by the staff, with everything from spring bedding to mature trees and shrubs available. “This year we’re expecting a lot more people to take up growing their own food – whether it’s a pot of tomatoes on a window ledge or getting an allotment, there’s nothing like the taste of something you’ve grown yourself,” Craig continues. A couple of hours browsing can mean a revamped garden, home and wardrobe, as well as relaxing over the tremendous choice of tasty meals and snacks the restaurant offers. Our home is our castle When Frans and Jayne Faber set first eyes on the grand century-old Kildrummy Castle in the picturesque Grampian Highlands, they knew in an instant that their three-year search for the hotel of their dreams had come to an end. The Fabers decided to uproot their family from Frans’s native Holland and settle within the UK. Jayne’s Scottish roots had always tugged at her, and therefore the Fabers headed to the North-east of Scotland where her parents had settled. They viewed a number of establishments on the market, but none was a perfect match… until their love-at-first sight encounter with Kildrummy Castle. In late 2007, they accepted an invitation to view the imposing castle in Alford, Aberdeenshire. Heading along the sweeping driveway that leads to the grand old lady presiding over breathtaking Scottish scenery, the couple were smitten. And within eight weeks, they had signed the papers for the project they’d so longed to find. Although Kildrummy Castle came on to the market in a good state of repair, Frans and Jayne invested in refreshing soft furnishings and cosmetic enhancements to ensure the 16-bedrooms and en-suites met their meticulous standards.
Each of Kildrummy’s sumptuous bedrooms is individually themed – from the superior Stronagaich that overlooks the castle’s majestic gardens, to the luxury of Mill o’Brux with its four-poster bed. Exceptional cuisine, prepared with the freshest of ingredients from the North-east’s natural larder, is Kildrummy Castle’s hallmark. From pantry to plate, it is lovingly created by proprietor and accomplished chef Frans, while Jayne tends to Kildrummy’s ‘front of house’ with their team. “More people today travel far and wide therefore our menu offers new tastes along with old classics and traditional Scottish fayre,” explained Frans, who lives with his family to the rear of the hotel. “We don’t have a formal reception. When guests visit Kildrummy, they are warmly welcomed by our staff, so that they feel like they are arriving within a home – not a corporate hotel.” Offering all the latest business conferencing technology, Kildrummy Castle is a firm favourite among corporate as well as leisure guests.

We’ve each fantasised about swapping our humdrum existence for a sun-drenched new life, and snapping the heels off our stilettos in exchange for an open-toed sandal. Then we lay out the power suit for tomorrow, set the alarm and turn in. Not so, Annie Manson. Take your sombrero off to this girl. You see, she made it happen… A former pupil of Aberdeen’s St Margaret’s, Annie grew up on the arable and cattle Kilblean Farm, Oldmeldrum. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Edinburgh, Annie’s potential was identified by the Chemical Bank of America during the graduate ‘milk round.’ It soon became clear that the account was closing on her interest in a banking career. After nearly three years in the City, Annie was introduced to Cordon Bleu chef, Clare Latimer of catering company, Clare’s Kitchen. Annie’s drive and enthusiasm intrigued Clare, who offered her a position. Almost overnight, Annie was elevated from clearing tables to commandeering the kitchen as a self-taught chef. She went on to launch her own agency, Annie B’s, catering for intimate dinner parties to elegant functions for thousands of guests. Having entrusted her future to failing pension funds, and inspired by the C4 travel show, Annie set off for Costa de la Luz to find a pension solution that could double as a rental income property.

“I instantly fell in love with Casa Alegre - a townhouse in the final throes of restoration in the old Andalucian town of Vejer. With its courtyard pool and spectacular views over the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, it became more
of a wrench to leave with every weekend,” said Annie, who moved there permanently in 2005. She then awarded herself a gap year, immersing herself in the food and wines of Spain and visiting cookery schools in Tuscany and Sicily. Annie boldly invested 20,000 Euros in transforming a disused sitting room in her rustic home into a teaching kitchen, and opened Annie B’s Spanish Kitchen in summer 2009. The school’s tutors include the mothers of celebrated Spanish chefs – the undisputed masters of paella. Her cookery school attracts foodies from around the globe, notably the US. There, students can acquire the art of cooking fast, fresh and fabulous food using ingredients from Spain’s natural larder – all of which can be sourced at home. Trend reader offer: In conjunction with James Stuart from Morayshire, owner of neighbouring La Casa del Califa hotel in Vejer, Annie has put together a special 20% discount offer exclusive to Trend readers who’d like to explore Mediterranean cooking/dining. Taking the twee out of tweed It was love at first sight for Arlene Searle when, as a documentaries director and producer at BBC Scotland, she was introduced to the wonders of Harris Tweed when covering the history of the songs that accompanied the weaving and making of the textile on Lewis. > words by niKi TEnnAnT
58
“I had access to the storeroom during a behind the scenes tour of the Mackenzie Tweed mills in Stornoway, and was totally blown away, remembers Arlene. The heather-inspired fuscias, zesty lemons, bold checks and plaids were the antithesis of the stereotypical green tweed jacket image sported by the conformist middle-aged man. The Tweed mills were in trouble, fighting off a hostile bid from an English businessman who wanted to restrict lines and limit Harris Tweed to only five
patterns and colours for use in high quality sports jackets. Determined to find a way to exploit this captivating, rich material, Arlene invited close friend Tracey Kearns – who grew up under the wing of her accomplished seamstress grandmother – to partner her in launching a cushion company. Two years ago, Arlene and Tracey, of Aberdeen, made the pilgrimage to the mills with their savings. “Without even a company name in place, we bought more than we anticipated, but less than we should have,” recalls Arlene. Hence, Pickle Cushion – inspired by Tracey’s maiden name, Branston – was born. “I’ve always had a passion for cushions and have historically found it hard to source inventive styles, so I was confident people like me would relish the opportunity to buy creative cushions on-line,” continued Arlene, who is working on a portfolio to support her application to study at Gray’s School of Art. After a steep learning curve and the challenges posed by the need to invest in marketing, the business is gaining momentum and its products are now stocked by Kynoch & Robertson on Rosemount. From a workshop in Maryculter, the business partners are constantly updating their designs and seeking new ways to interpret the fabric.
Pickle’s Spring collection – predominantly in lemon and denim blue - focuses on additional trimmings that complement the rich hues of the tweed. And the cuddle-up cushions somehow exude the designers’ love in creating them. Said Tracey: “We like a Pickle Cushion to look as if it comes from a long line of Scottish heritage, so it’s comfortable and reassuring, but progressive, fresh and edgy, too. “We think that if you enjoy producing something, people truly sense that and take real pleasure in making it a part of their home. We couldn’t ask for anything more.” WIN…. A pair of cushions from Pickle’s new Spring collection, worth £100. STAR LETTER Dear Trend Thanks, yet again, for a great issue. I always look forward to it. I never realised how many great restaurants and specialist shops were on my doorstep! You really bring the best out in Aberdeen. We are very quick to moan about a lack of nice places to go or shop in our lovely city, when actually they are there. It has taken a magazine like Trend to direct us! I’m also enjoying a weekly salsa class with my friends, thanks to a great feature in your magazine. Please don’t do a feature on parachute jumping - I hate flying, and jumping, so I don’t want to be tempted to try that too… baby steps! Keep up the good work. Donna Sinclair Craigiebuckler, Aberdeen Donna was the winner of a £50 voucher for the Paula McEwen Restaurant @ The Great Western Hotel
I am a dedicated ‘foodie’ and self-confessed ‘shopaholic’. How wonderful to discover a place that satisfied both of my addictions! Fenner and Coburn Aberdeen, is both a delightful cafe and dress shop. On a recent visit, as I was munching my way through a delicious scone, I leafed through a copy of the February/ March Trend. To my surprise, I realised that over my years in Aberdeen, I had eaten in most of the recommended cafes and restaurants. I had even honeymooned at Meldrum House a zillion years ago. More recently, I had a holiday in Canada and found Toronto just as Trend described it – certainly a place for those who enjoy good food, quirky shops and great museums. Do keep up the good work in promoting all that is good about Aberdeen, and encouraging us to look further for exciting leisure and cultural experiences.
Dear Trend In June 2009, after enjoying a sumptuous meal at The Atholl Hotel, I noticed Trend Magazine on my way out and picked up my first copy. To say it's fabulous and entertaining is an understatement! It's so packed with useful information on dining, fashion, health & beauty, with brilliant prizes to be won in each new edition! Thank you to all the Trend team for compiling such a valuable and informative magazine by catering to all tastes. Keep up your good work and I look forward to the next exciting edition! Her trademark abstract work is influenced by findings in stone quarries.
Pat began honing her creative talents back in the 1970s when she studied graphic design at Aberdeen College.
Husband Robert has a long-held passion for palaeontology – the study of fossils to determine the evolution of extinct animals and plants, and the age of deposition of the rock strata in which they are found.
She has also produced a collection of heavily textured canvasses, using glossy, vibrant colours. As well as corroded copper, her most recent work features mixed media using softer paints to create a more sleek appeal.
After bringing up her son and daughter, she returned to the college in 2002 to complete a portfolio course but she was determined to pursue a degree. Indian Red Lopez first stunned audiences less than two years ago. Their now infamous live shows incorporate projected videos, graphics and lighting with their trademark blend of electrolaced indie. This tightly-choreographed multi-sensory experience impresses on a number of levels simultaneously. In short, it’s pretty cool.
expressive vocals provide an emotional heart to the music, and remind us that Indian Red Lopez put songwriting before musical experimentation.
Their stage show isn’t the only talking point. Last year’s ‘Castles Incomplete’ EP was an impressive calling card, generating a wave of interest throughout the UK – and with good reason. Precisely arranged and winningly experimental, it’s a potent mix of creative rhythms, guitars and layered electronica.
There’s a refreshing sense of support and collaboration among the new generation of acts currently revitalising Aberdeen’s music scene.
The result is like an uplifting blend of Scottish indie, ‘Kid-A’ era Radiohead and Bloc Party. It’s an impressive display of technical wizardry; singer Mike Chang’s
“We are inspired by so many things,” says Chang. “From trivial things, to art and literature, love, loss, open skies, derelict buildings, North East Scotland.”
“There is a definite sense of solidarity,” Chang explains, citing Fife’s ‘Fence Collective’ as a major influence. “Stanley are the best band in Aberdeen, without a doubt. The Little Kicks & Cast Of The Capital are great, and have become our cohorts over the past year. We’re planning to get some shows lined up with a few, if not all, of them.”

>> GOOD SPORT It is now almost 12 years ago since I first started working with Land Rover UK - I was instrumental in bringing the Land Rover Off-Road Driving Experience to Scotland. But I am particularly proud of my involvement in the set up and execution of the Global Press Launch of the new model Range Rover, which took place at Skibo Castle near Dornoch in 2001 and lasted 7 weeks in total. At all times there were up to 40 HSE’s running on and off-road continuously – I was then, as I am now, very impressed with the reliability and durability of this vehicle. The Sport is now a familiar sight on British roads and has overtaken the “Big Brother” in sales. The TDV8 can do 0 – 60 in 8.6 seconds and has a top speed of over 120 mph. But do not be fooled by its appearance as a high performance road car, as it can get down and dirty with the
best of all off-road vehicles. The Sport has a terrain response system; the driver chooses one of five terrain settings via a rotary knob mounted on the centre consul, select from mud/ruts, sand, rock crawl, and the system will automatically engage the optimum set-up for the electronic control and traction aids. This includes ride height, torque response, hill descent control, and electronic traction control and transmission settings. I drove the TDV8 to the top of a snowy mountain and it reminded me what an exceptional car Land Rover has in the Sport. On the return journey the descent was, to say the least, hazardous but on engaging the hill descent control, I just allowed the vehicle to take me safely back to the main road. The cost of the TDV8 on test was £60,400 and it was kindly supplied by Town & County, Land Rover Aberdeen.

The last word with...
In an age where TV turns nonentities into celebrities, it’s a pleasure to meet up again with the real thing, celebrity chef Brian Turner.
The 63-year-old Yorkshireman was back in the north-east to prepare dinner for 80 guests of Aberdeen-based waste management recycling firm, Taylors Industrial Services, in a star-spangled marquee in the grounds of Ann Taylor’s Falls of Feugh restaurant at Banchory. The fine fare included Stilton and Champagne soup, fillet of beef from Braemar and a white chocolate and raspberry trifle. Yummy. “As well as being a master chef, he is a Photography - Donald Stewart Photography 82
great card,” said Ann. “He has been with us before and our staff get a great lift from his visits.”
Brian greatly enjoys his trips to Scotland from his home in north London. “You are so lucky to have such great raw materials up here,” he said, “from the meat to the wonderful langoustines and other seafood, not to mention your whisky.” Halifax-born Brian, whose dad, Laurence, was in the Army Catering Corps, has fingers in many pies, so to speak. He’s never off the telly, acts as an ambassador for kitchen products, writes books and may embark on a restaurant venture in Dubai. More than
that, his commitment to tourism and the training of the next generation of chefs earned him the insignia of CBE in 2002. It is also no surprise that Brian supports various charities. The six-footer with the generous paunch has even run the London Marathon, not bad for a chef who admits to guzzling as he goes about his business in the kitchen. He handles fame lightly and has taken another great honour in his stride. You can now have a pint of Brian Turner amber ale in certain London pubs. “My pies are not far behind,” he adds cheekily.
