Slowly but surely a new wave of independent food producer is appearing. Ruth Cowell is one such producer. A mother of two boys under ﬁve, she has been breeding pedigree Gloucester Old Spot and Berkshire Pigs at her small-holding for around 18 months. Customers love the taste of her pork, which ‘knocks spots oﬀ’ supermarket brands.

Reducing the risk for women In Grampian every year, approximately 450 women receive the devastating news that they have breast cancer. The number of detected cases is on the increase, partly due to the success of the NHS Breast Screening Programme, which offers three-yearly mammograms to 50 to 70-year-old women. What can you do? • BREAST AWARENESS is the answer -START NOW! • Notice NEW changes not just lumps • Check the skin, nipple, veins, dimpling, changes in size or position • In the bath/shower use soap/lotion on your breasts and hands • Go round the ‘clock face’ gently checking with the flat of the hand

You are at greater risk if you: Smoke, drink (more than two units daily), have a diet high in fats, use hormone medication, have your first pregnancy later in life, are overweight. Family history Lifetime risk is 1 in 10 women. The incidence of truly genetically related breast cancer is less than 10%. Be vigilant about changes and report any concerns to your GP. Early diagnosis is the key to good outcome.

Gift of life When Inverness couple Marie and Gus MacRae fell in love and married, they both knew they would never realise their dream of having a child without the help of IVF with egg donation. > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT

“When our ﬁrst two attempts failed, we were devastated,” explained Marie, who attended the Fertility Centre at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital for treatment. “None of our friends or family knew what we were going through, apart from my mum. It was easier that way - we couldn’t have handled sympathy.”

The couple were elated when, after a third attempt, Marie became pregnant. “After an initial scare, everything went well and I ﬁnally gave birth to our beautiful daughter, Sophie. She is worth everything we have gone through in the last six years. I still can’t believe sometimes that she is here. I honestly did not think I would ever be a mum. We can never

repay the donor or the Fertility Centre for our precious little girl.” Because one in six couples experience fertility problems, as many as 40 people from across the north of Scotland are referred to the Fertility Centre for treatment using donated eggs or sperm each year. Treatment for cancer, early menopause, and genetic problems are some of the reasons couples to seek out the help of the unit as a last resort. But because only 10% of the prospective donors who contact the unit actually go ahead and donate sperm or eggs, the need for more donors couldn’t be more pressing. “We get potential donors coming forward who have experienced the joy of having their own children and want to share that,” explained donor co-ordinator, Lorraine Stewart. “By donating eggs or sperm, they allow couples like Gus and Marie to bring a child into the world within a loving family environment. 1. Heat the oven to 200C/Gas mark 6. Add the potatoes to a pan of well salted boiling water and cook for 12-15 minutes. 2. Prepare a plate with the five-spice, paprika and salt and roll the fish until completely coated. 3. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and sear the monkfish for 1 ½ to 2 minutes each side until golden. 4. Transfer the fish to a hot roasting tray and bake for 8 minutes.

5. Drain the potatoes and return to the pan. Lightly crush them with a fork, add the olive oil, lemon juice and seasoning. Stir in the chopped peppers, olives and basil. 6. Cut the monkfish into thick slices. Spoon the crushed potatoes onto a large serving plate and arrange the fish on top. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with lemon wedges.

Dinner Review: Cock & Bull I visited the Cock and Bull close to Balmedie at the onset of a blustery autumn, so it was good to get inside the low-beamed inn. The lounge was full, so we went straight to our table in the bright, modern conservatory. There is also a separate, cosy, wood-panelled restaurant area.

Luigi’s Lunch Review: Luigi’s Restaurant Luigi’s Restaurant, within the Holiday Inn at Westhill, has recently opened its doors to diners at lunchtime on weekdays. By 1pm, a number of tables were taken a mix of ladies (that’s me) doing lunch and business people, all being looked after by the friendly and efficient staff. The design of the restaurant creates a sense of privacy and the use of dark wood and comfortable leather chairs gives a modern, yet cosy atmosphere. An ‘espresso’ lunch menu is offered £14.95 for two courses or £17.95 for three with a choice of six starters, six main 28

courses and three desserts. The menu includes Italian staples such as minestrone soup, lasagne and pizza margarita. Being lunchtime, I polished my halo and declined wine. The well constructed list covered many of the classic Italian regions from north to south, as well as a few guest appearances from other countries. My friend’s tasty rustic pate was chunky, laced through with pistachios and served with a very good chutney. My antipasto contained one of my favourite combinations- Parma ham and fresh ﬁgs. There was also buﬀalo mozzarella, tomato and watermelon.

After toying with the idea of grilled sardines (I love them but they are so fiddly…), I opted for grilled chicken breast with a classic cream, mushroom and tomato sauce. The chicken was moist and served with potatoes and roasted veggies. Across the table, my friend enjoyed a creamy, generously proportioned fettuccini carbonara. My hubby is a bit of a pastry fan so went for a goat’s cheese, red onion marmalade puff pastry tartlet, a good contrast of sweet and savoury flavours lifted by a tomato and basil dressing: £4.95. I enjoyed a confit of Gressingham duck leg with a wholesome wild mushroom, puy lentil and grain mustard stew: £5.50 The wine list carries a mix of old and new world classic styles, with a number being available by the glass. We enjoyed a rather zingy, minerally bottle of Leasingham Riesling 2005 from the Clare Valley in Australia: £19.95.

For my main course, I had two perfectly seared fillets of sea bass on top of a creamy lobster risotto. The creaminess was cut with the sharpness of the accompanying lemon braised fennel: £17.50. Hubby’s seared loin of venison was tender and accompanied by a parsnip puree, roast carrots and a beetroot and thyme jus: £16.95 A glass of forward, dark berry-driven Merlot Tannat, from Uruguay, complemented it well. We finished with very good rhubarb and ginger bread and butter pudding, with real vanilla custard: £5.25 and a selection of Celtic cheeses: £6.95. We managed to secure a comfy sofa in the homely lounge for coffee. It’s a complete contrast to the conservatory, adorned floor to ceiling with quirky finds. Opened recently by Jacquie Ashcroft – proprietor of The Deli at Cults – The Raspberry Cheesecake introduces to Bridge of Don an indulgent experience that combines everyone’s two greatest loves – shopping and dining. The Raspberry Cheesecake is both a gift shop showcasing quirky, individual designs, and a café dishing up wholesome, hearty, home-cooked food. Jacquie is a discerning buyer, ordering stock from small companies and refusing to buy in bulk. The shop’s cabinets 32

Following advice, I arrived an hour early to explore the delights of the various heat experiences, from the crystal steam room to the hot sauna cabinet. Mounted against a lush backdrop of tumbling Scottish countryside, turning into the sweeping entrance to the grand 850 acre Gleneagles estate is enough to make any visitor from home or away drop to his knees and pray. Met mid-driveway and relieved of my bags by the kilted concierge, I was warmly greeted at reception and accompanied to the recently refurbished fourth floor. The unobtrusive custodian of my luggage waited at the end of the corridor while I familiarised myself with the splendour of one of the nine new Spirit Suites. The decadent 122.5 sq.m. John Browne Suite had all the touches of home and 42

more: fresh flowers, Wi-Fi access, LCD televisions, a Sony Playstation, DVD players and a coffee maker with an extensive selection of ground beans. While I appreciated a glass of the Chardonnay on ice on my dining table (it would have been churlish not to), Patrick – who is charged with the responsibility of attending to the suites’ guests’ every whim – arrived with a jug of fresh cold milk. Feeling like Julia Roberts in Gere’s suite in Pretty Woman, only my appointment at the spa could tempt me away. The award-winning Spa at Gleneagles by Espa is a soothing haven whose elegant

As someone who likes to think of herself as a bit of a foodie, I arrived at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Edinburgh, to sample a new dining concept with a certain amount of ill-judged complacency.

I pronounced the next ﬂavour to be predominantly venison, until our host informed us it was peppercorn spiced carpaccio of ostrich. And the sorbet turned out to be laced with Irn Bru.

By blindfolding diners who sample dishes and beverages of which they’ve no prior knowledge, the sensory dining experience promises to challenge the palate and heighten awareness of the food’s ﬂavours, smells and textures by allowing non-visual senses to take over.

It’s too early on a bitterly cold Saturday morning to be skulking in hedgerows, but I’m in Duthie Park to try one of the British Military Fitness classes. Today’s instructors are Jokim, an Australian ex-commando and Stephen, who used to be a paratrooper.

Worse, a toblerone isn’t a chocolate break, but involves sticking your bottom in the air and your head on the ground. I have mud on my knees and now know what Duthie Park tastes like.

Inspired by his grandfather, Richie Ramsay has had the golf bug since the age of three. As a typical Aberdeen schoolboy, Richie tried most sports throughout his childhood. It wasn’t long, however, before he realised golf was his forte. Richie was 13 when he started taking his ‘hobby’ seriously, and, as well as being a member of Hazlehead Golf Club, also accepted an opportunity to join Royal Aberdeen. Two years later he was taking part in his first national tournament in West Kilbride. He went on to forge a successful amateur career that featured several national titles, a regular

slot in the Scottish national team and a place in the Great Britain & Ireland 2005 Walker Cup side. It reached a memorable, and historic, peak in 2006 when he won the US Amateur Championship, the first Scot to do so in over a century. Richie turned professional in July 2007, playing on the Challenge Tour and securing victories in Germany and France during his first full year on the circuit. These triumphs, and consistently high performances in other events during 2008, secured him 6th place overall on the tour and a card for next season’s European Tour. Competing has already taken Richie around the world, and his travels in the near future will feature the Far East, Australia and South Africa as he embarks

on the 2008/09 European Tour to compete among the continent’s elite golfers. During this time Richie hopes to play on his favourite course, Loch Lomond, as he takes part in the Scottish Open. A modest Richie professes he wouldn’t be where he is today without the help of his supporters and sponsors. Aberdeen’s Craig Group has been sponsoring him since July 2008. He says: “They are an integral part of my success.” Richie is every bit the professional golfer a cool, level-headed young man. He is extremely focused and shows great determination for the coming year. Jewellery designer to the stars, Gerry Summers, draws his inspiration from the art of ancient cultures. The subtle signatures of the Egyptians, Incas, Greeks and Romans creep into most of his designs, which have been adorned by supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, Diana Ross, Amanda Holden and Natalie Cole. Raised in Kintore, Gerry moved to London in 1977 to claim his place at the Central St Martin’s School of Art. “My best friend was studying interior design in London, and told me there were only two ways in which to live there: be rich, or be a student, but one way or the other, he said, I had to be a part of it,” recalls Gerry. “My dad was a blacksmith and the way I looked at it, a career in jewellery design was the same, but on a smaller scale.” After graduating in 1980, he spent two years honing his jewellery skills as a craftsman with a number of top jewellers, before launching Gerry Summers Jewellery Design in 1983. 52

After many years in Soho, he moved his business to Richmond, where he lives with his opera and ballet costume designer wife, Suzanne Parkinson, and their 10-year-old son, Ruaridh. Gerry’s jewellery designs, some of which sell for £100,000s, are predominantly in 18+ carat gold or platinum and frequently feature very precious colourful stones such as tanzanite, aqua marine, emerald, ruby and sapphire.

It takes imagination and considerable creative talent to produce a head-turning outfit from a mere £15. Yet, that’s what three 2nd year Aberdeen College students achieved, using no more than a bag of headscarves. HND textile students Rebecca Astill, Fiona McCrae and Katie Sharp, made up one of the eight teams who came head to head in a ‘style-off’ challenge as part of a recent fashion show in aid of Children 1st. The project challenged the students to design an outfit from garments purchased on the limited budget from a Children 1st charity shop. Trend’s business development co-ordinator, Sarah Wattie, was among the six judges to declare Fiona of Fraserburgh, Katie of Hatton, and Ballater’s Rebecca as the winners. “Rather than buying items of clothing and simply updating them, the girls managed from scratch to create a colourful bodice and skirt from simple scarves, which really impressed the judges,” said Sarah. “The resulting outfit, modelled by Katie, had distinctive Victorian appeal and demonstrated real flair and confidence.” The girls were awarded with a certificate to add to their portfolio. Said Rebecca (19): “Taking part in the project was great fun and it was really exciting to see how each of the teams responded. We knew it was a risk to take such a radical approach in our design, but I’m thrilled it paid off.” 54

Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky... if these names mean anything to you then down tools immediately and head straight to www.myspace.com/katerwaul because you may have just found your new favourite local band. It’s Saturday night in the Tunnels and before Katerwaul take the stage, I overhear a group of girls enthusiastically gushing about that night’s episode of X-Factor. I can’t help but smile; I’m fairly sure they’re in the wrong room. Katerwaul don’t really ‘do’ songs..not in the traditional sense anyway. Despite claims that this may change in the future (a piano led piece on their myspace may be a nod to this) it’s clear that Katerwaul circa 2008

are interested in lengthy, largely instrumental movements rather than neatly packaged pop songs. In 35 minutes, they’re lucky to squeeze in six of them. Live, Katerwaul are impassioned, unpredictable and at times absorbing. They understand arrangements instinctively and swing from periods of loose and delicately interwoven delayed guitar arpeggios and gentle falsetto, to moments of crashing, distorted bass-and-drum driven chaos. And back again. At times frenzied, at others fragile; Katerwaul know when they should and –crucially- should not live up to their name. Tim Courtney may be the closest thing Katerwaul has to a frontman - yet this idea clearly makes him feel uncomfortable. “I try

and back for the up change. Porsche in their infinite wisdom have designed their gear change to work in the opposite manner. I found the speed and execution of the gearbox phenomenal; this has to be the future.

From the excellent driving position and race developed dashboard, to the foot brace, everything fits and feels right. The rear engine is a 3.8 litre developing 385 hp with 420 nms of torque, coupled to what Porsche have called a PDK (PorscheDoppelkupplungsgetriebe) transmission; basically a manual and an automatic married together with launch control.

What about the launch control? Press the launch control button, left foot on the brake, right foot on the accelerator, hold maximum revs, launch control now active appears on the instrument cluster, release brake – the car will rocket to an outstanding 0 – 62 in 4.2 seconds going to 188 mph!

It is amazing to think that Porsche designed the PDK as far back as 1983 when it was used in their 956 race car. So when we read about Ferrari with the Cambio Corsa, followed by BMW’s SMG and then Volkswagen’s DSG and Mitsubishi’s TC-SST, all these trick 58

transmissions were developed after the Porsche PDK. Porsche now believe that the time is right for a fully developed and refined gear box, to operate as smoothly and gently as the torque converter-based tiptronic it replaces in the 911. The PDK box is as smooth as a conventional automatic, and in manual mode it can shift much more quickly and faster than the standard manual gearbox. Personally, the only minor irritation for me is that in most competition cars I have driven the gear change is forward for down changing

Chasing the dream

This September, six North-east businessmen recently successfully completed the Berlin Marathon in aid of their chosen charity, Dreams Come True. In doing so, and with the support of those who attended the Burlesque themed ball earlier in the month, a tremendous £35,000 was raised to help local children. For the second year, the runners chose to support Dreams Come True, a charity which helps to lift the spirits of children who have terminal or serious illness by fulﬁlling their most treasured dreams. The charity receives no government funding and relies on voluntary donations. Dreams children are aged 2-21 and suﬀer from a variety of illnesses,

01 ‘HOLLYWOOD’ FUNDRAISING EVENING Supporters of Ben Kilner's bid to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics held a ' Hollywood ' evening to help raise funds for the young half-pipe snowboarder. Pupils at Aberdeen’s Kirkhill Nursery/Primary School held a masked dinner and dance at the Beach Ballroom to raise funds for their school and to help other children around the North-east. With support from oil services company Petrotechnics , through the Business Education Partners Scheme, the children organised the event themselves and also made masks which they sold for £1 a time. A total of £3,000 was raised which will go towards buying new learning aids and funding the vital Breakfast Club run by the 274-pupil school to try to make sure children start each day with a healthy breakfast. Northsound’s Cash for Kids will also benefit.

The Media Ball held at The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa raised more than £3,000 for charities NUJ Extra and Aberdeen’s Reading Bus. Over 200 of the North-east’s media, PR and marketing professionals attended and BBC broadcaster Mark Stephen delivered a hugely entertaining after dinner speech.

Reigning Miss Great Britain, Rachael Tennent (21), grew up in Milltimber. She reached the final of the Miss Scotland pageant in 2006, and beat off competition from 49 other contestants to claim the Miss GB beauty crown last year. The win saw her moving to London almost overnight for glamorous fashion shoots and personal appearances. She has been signed by two modelling agencies in London, and one in Manchester. What makes Rachael Tennent tick? Going home to family and friends in Aberdeen whenever I can. I love being around happy people. What do you most like about Aberdeen? It will always be my home. It’s small, close-knit, very beautiful, and surrounded by countryside. A night out or a night in? Both! While I love a night out with the girls, nothing beats getting into my p’js and snuggling up in front of a good dvd. What’s your secret to looking so fabulous? I don’t really have one. Since I’ve been working more, I do treat myself to some nice face cream. I’m fortunate to have my mum’s metabolism and so don’t go to the gym. I enjoy my fruit and veg, I drink lots of water and take vitamins, but I’m also partial to a Chinese and - I admit it even an occasional McDonald’s! 74
