EDITOR’S ETCHINGS

Editor’s welcome One of the most rewarding aspects of my job as editor of Trend is having the honour of advising our readers that they’ve won one of our fabulous competitions. This time, though, must surely go down as the most memorable. Brenda Mennie’s reaction when I called to tell her that she’d be jetting off to New York for four nights, courtesy of Heavenly Pizzas, left me with a lump in my throat. And that wasn’t down to jealousy alone – honest! In this issue, we’re heading into 2010 with even more chances to win fantastic prizes. If all the festivities leave you longing for some ‘you’ time, enter our competition to win a break and enjoy the tranquillity at Loch Ness Lodge.

To celebrate the arrival of contemporary jewellery and watch specialist, ROX, to Aberdeen, clock on to page 36 for a chance to win a stylish TechnoMarine watch. Leap into the New Year as a new you. Win £750 worth of state-of-the-art IPL hair removal treatments at Saks, and ditch the razor! In an endeavour to keep your magazine fresh and inspiring, the team at Trend ended 2009 by inviting some of Scotland’s hottest talent to present their ideas for our themed fashion pages. Wow, did they rise to the challenge! This issue showcases the dramatic results.

Also, meet Gray’s School of Art fashionista, Kim Eason, and find out why the designs of her most promising students are destined for future glossy fashion spreads – and, undoubtedly, for top boutiques around the world. And plan your 2010 social calendar by checking out the events Trend Productions is staging in the coming year. Thanks for picking up Trend. See you again in February/March. Best wishes, Niki Tennant Editor

Katie’s skin was prepared with ‘Blanc de Chanel’ and a tiny amount of ’Vitalumiere’ fluid foundation to illuminate her fair complexion. This was then buffed into a wintry glow with ’lilas Poudre Douce.’ On Katie’s eyes, a wash of liquid eye shadow, ’ombre d’eau cascade,’ provided a solid base to press over the silver sparkle of ’platine’ and a whisper of ’black star’ for definition in her socket line. To elongate and open Katie’s eyes, the lashes were trimmed with ’la ligne’ liquid liner and decorated with false lashes. For lips with frosty sparkle, a layer of ’Astral’ scintillating gloss was applied.

2009 into 2010

With the festive season fast approaching it is now time to get yourself looking good. For a special night out why not have a peel or a microdermabrasion treatment which can instantly brighten your complexion. You may prefer injectable treatments instead. These are great for smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines and can also add volume to the skin. You may be finding your clothes aren’t fitting as well as they could be. If you are close to your ideal weight but have one or more stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to weight loss or exercise then laser liposuction may be the answer. It is performed under local anaesthesia by our consultant led, plastic surgery team. Even though winter is upon us, treatments such as laser hair removal can still add the wow factor to that all important look. Finally, if you are still wearing glasses or contact lenses why not opt for laser eye surgery. With a little care and attention all of us can look our best for the festive season.

The full effect can be seen around six weeks after treatment.” Like all aesthetic skin rejuvenation treatments, Dermaroller must only be carried out by a medically trained practitioner. Hair today, gone tomorrow Win £750 worth of IPL hair removal treatments from Saks Fed up with the hassle of saving your legs or waxing your underarms, ladies? Bear an uncanny resemblance to a yeti when you take your t-shirt off, gentlemen? Bothered by that bikini line or unsightly facial hair? Then take advantage of this bumper prize on offer from SAKS, with £750 worth of IPL hair removal treatments for our lucky winner. The IPL treatments use an intense pulsed light to remove unwanted hair from almost anywhere on the body. Incorporating the latest IPL (intense pulsed light) technology, a wand is guided via a glass prism to the hair. The pigments in the hair absorb the light, converting it to heat and destroying the hair follicle making it unable to produce more hair, preventing future growth. The treatment is much less painful than waxing and removes about 85% of the hair, with any re-growth being much finer, fairer and less noticeable. A cooling gel is applied before treatment and an aloe Vera gel afterwards. IPL works best for people with light to medium skin and darker hair. It isn’t suitable for people who have very fair or grey hair or anyone under the age of eighteen. Most people need a course of approximately 6 treatments for maximum results. After an initial consultation and compatibility test, the winner can choose which areas of their body that they’d like to have treated, so anything from a stubble free chin to totally smooth tootsies is possible.

Papillon takes flight > wORdS By NIKI TENNANT

To describe Fiona McGrath’s baptism into the world of fashion retail as maverick would be an understatement. The former punk hairdresser has drawn on her experiences of global travel and her penchant for all that’s creative to launch Papillon boutique in Cults. The boutique’s classic collection with a quirky edge was inspired by Fiona’s nomadic lifestyle – and latterly, her three-year residence in the Netherlands, where the majority of fashion retailers are independent. Fiona, a native of Perthshire, said: “On my return to Scotland, I was quite shocked at how few independents there were. That convinced me that now was the right time to launch my own boutique”. “When the right location presented itself on North Deeside Road in Cults, I snapped it up and opened Papillon in September 2009.” Aesthetically, her boutique is a fusion of the old and new, and showcases the talents of fashion designers from around the world: clothing and accessories by Bandolera of Holland and Betty Barclay of Germany, and fashions in sizes 6 to 22 by Canada’s Joseph Ribkoff. Papillon is one of only two Scotland stockists of the Ronen Chen label. The flamboyant Israeli designer’s signature, sleek-cut, conservative creations are designed on a manikin. Refreshingly, Fiona buys only seven pieces of each creation – reducing the dreaded risk of appearing at the party of the year in the same dress as someone else. Discerning women can also play footsie at Papillon boutique with ‘taxi-to-table’ shoes by Luxury Rebel, Spanish footwear and bags by Hispanitas, and shoes by high-end UK designer, Ash. Like Fiona, Papillon is a breath of fresh air. Classical, yet unassuming, this is a boutique that’s comfortable in its own skin.

CHEF FEATURE

A firm female hand on The Ship Inn tiller > INTERVIEw By NIKI TENNANT

Fallon Oliveira, Head Chef at The Ship Inn Located on Stonehaven’s seafront, fresh, locally-caught fish and seafood is The Ship Inn’s speciality. The glass-fronted restaurant creates the illusion of dining al fresco, with stunning views of the harbour.

Which best describes your role as chef: tradesperson or artist? Artist - I have a very creative flair; when it comes to planning new menus and dishes, I am in my element. Which country in the world do you think should be crowned culinary king, and why? India, for all its spices. It’s bewildering… Men dominate the restaurant scene, while women are predominantly home cooks. What’s it 26

like working in a man’s world? I don’t think it’s so much of a man’s world nowadays, as there are more and more female chefs appearing in busy restaurants everywhere. I think the kitchen is a much calmer place when run by a woman, as there’s less shouting and more cooking. However, I must admit when it comes to putting the bins out at night, it’s good to have a man around. When did you last eat out and where?

Last week, I went to Rossini’s for dinner whilst on holiday in Barcelona and two weeks prior to that I went to Roo’s Leap in Montrose. Which dish would you choose as your last supper? Spaghetti Bolognese. I’m a big fan of Italian food. When you seek culinary inspiration, which cooking bible do you reach for first? Anything by Jamie Oliver and Mary Berry.

Restaurant REVIEWS Brunch Review: Sand dollar cafe The question was, how long should our walk along the beach be before we could justify popping into the Sand Dollar for brunch? As the clouds started to look even more grey and brooding, and the sea spray from the crashing waves turned to light drizzle, we figured that it was latte o’clock. I really like the decor at the Sand Dollar. They’ve brought the seaside inside with pebble picture tablecloths, sea blue walls and distressed wooden panelling.

28

The menu is varied to allow you to enjoy breakfast, the light lunch option, a full blown meal or coffee and cake. From previous experience, I can vouch for the homemade burgers. I nearly went for the full Scottish breakfast but settled on the Sand Dollar breakfast – a stack of three light and fluffy pancakes with crisp back bacon and, of course, maple syrup on the side. It was a winning combination.

My walking buddy enjoyed her usual - a very fresh roll filled with bacon and egg. Mugs of cappuccinos and lattes rounded it off perfectly. Welcoming with a buzzy atmosphere, Sand Dollar is well established and often busy, and it’s easy to see why. It’s worth booking ahead. I must go walking down at the beach more often.... RESTAURANT REVIEWS

dinner Review: cafe montmartre The torrential rain as we stepped out of the cab reminded me of my last visit to Paris, and I wondered if our evening at Restaurant Francais Cafe Montmartre would do the same. It was quiet as we wandered into the restaurant and with the sounds of Edith Piaf in the background, we chose one of two alcove tables. Crisp white table cloths offset the wooden floors and red banquettes nicely. The menu, as hoped, was classically French – should I go for the duck with Port and orange sauce, or perhaps the pork medallions a la normandie? Maybe a bottle of wine from the exclusively French list would help. Long an Alsace fan, I went for a Pinot Gris from Gustave Lorentz (£22.95) knowing that

it could cope with many of the potential food matches coming its way. Then, I spotted the Béarnaise sauce which was available to accompany the aged fillet steak. Decision made. To start, I indulged in foie gras perfectly complemented with warm brioche and fig chutney (£9.45). Across the table, the homemade Merguez sausages were making a spicy impact (£6.95). It’s always good to see origins on menus, and the restaurant sources its beef from traditionally reared herds from the North-east of Scotland and Aberdeenshire. My steak was excellent, full flavoured and tender and with real homemade French fries (£22.95). There is plenty of choice for seafood lovers too. My partner enjoyed his generous bowl of salmon, mussels and monkfish cooked in a delicate, creamy curry sauce which

complemented rather than over powered (£18.95). Thought had also gone into the accompanying vegetables. Keeping in French tradition, I enjoyed the cheese board - a good selection simply presented and true to their origins (£7.25). The sorbet selection was top notch too (£5.95). The evening was relaxed, service friendly and the food very good indeed and so much closer than Paris! FEAST YOUR EYES On the Paula McEwen Restaurant!

Consistently good food… that’s what one of Aberdeen’s newest restaurants promises to the city’s most discerning diners. Accomplished chef, Paula McEwen, recently opened her first signature restaurant within the refurbished Great Western Hotel on Great Western Road. The 30-seater restaurant, decorated in soothing natural tones, offers fine dining in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere, where diners can choose from the a la carte or set menus. Alternatively, daily specials – such as steamed mussels, pastas, salads and traditional ‘gastropub’ dishes– are served in the comfortable setting of the lounge bar. Coffee and home bakes are on offer throughout the day. The contemporary, Scottish, no-nonsense dishes produced by Paula pay testimony to her commitment to using the freshest of ingredients from Scotland’s natural larder. Few chefs in the North-east of Scotland can rival her impressive culinary c.v. She began her career at The Marcliffe as comis chef, and – after nine months with The Foyer – returned to the five star hotel’s pastry section as chef de partie. 30

Paula was then to be lured to the highly acclaimed Witchery in Edinburgh, where she was junior sous chef, before joining the capital’s Balmoral Hotel as chef de partie in its Michelin-starred restaurant, The Number One. “While I was determined to build experience, my ultimate ambition was always to return to Aberdeen to open my own restaurant,” said Paula. It’s been a long-awaited move for both Paula and the diners who look set to make the Paula McEwen Restaurant the word on everyone’s lips. “What I want to achieve is consistency – from the food to the service,” pledged Paula, who will open her restaurant for al fresco dining in early summer. “Wine knowledge is also pivotal. I’ve invested a lot of time in training my staff to recommend with confidence the perfect wines to complement a meal.” Paula McEwen Restaurant @ The Great Western Hotel 239 Great Western Road Aberdeen T: 01224 587002 E: info@paulamcewen.com www.paulamcewen.com

Exactly a year since Prego ice cream parlour, lunch deli and takeaway opened its doors, the business is doubling in size and introducing to Aberdeen an exciting new dining concept. George Clark and Stuart Murray have extended Prego into neighbouring premises on Fountainhall Road to create Prego lunchroom and evening bistro.

You're Welcome at Prego

The bistro, which opens in December, can cater for 24 diners and serves breakfasts, morning coffees, lunches, afternoon teas and evening meals. The cosy, intimate bistro has been decorated in classic mulberry tones, complemented by plaid, taupe and dark wood to invoke a comfortable homely atmosphere. You will be welcomed by Stuart, George and the friendly team. Serving good, wholesome food the menu has something for all taste buds. The menu includes some typical Mediterranean and Scottish dishes with Prego's special twist on them, lovingly prepared by George and chef Louisa Milne. Sweet-toothed disciples of the Prego ice cream parlour can also get their fix at the bistro. "We set out to create a relaxed dining environment which is affordable. For that reason, the focus is on food. Because we invite diners to bring their own bottle, we won't be marking up their bill with expensive bottles of wine," explained Stuart. Together with supportive family members, notably Stuart's Uncle Mario, the couple have fitted out the new restaurant on their own, ensuring it has their individual stamp. With assistance from the couple's mums, Julia and Edith, the ice cream parlour and lunch deli will continue to serve takeaway treats seven days a week. In the bistro, breakfast and morning coffees are served between 8 and 10am, with lunches from 11am to 2.30pm, afternoon tea 2.30 to 6pm and dinner 6pm 'til late, Monday to Saturday. Book to avoid disappointment. Prego Aberdeen 33 Fountainhall Road, Aberdeen T: 01224 640368 www.pregoaberdeen.co.uk 31

The ideal choice for gastronomic food in a bistro setting at a great price! Welcome to La Stella, Aberdeen’s premier Bistronomy restaurant.

One of my favourites to use in drinks is elderflower; a wonderful aroma and natural sweetness make it a sensational addition to many cocktails. A great product has had many bartenders experimenting to create new and exciting, contemporary cocktails. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur is a 100% natural product made from handpicked elderflower blossoms. Try this drink that I came up with and you will see why it has become a favourite: Edwardian Mojito, 50ml Gin, 20ml St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Juice of a half a lime, 10 sprigs of fresh mint, 2 teaspoons white sugar, 3 slices cucumber, Apple Juice ‘Muddle’ the lime, sugar and cucumber at the bottom of the glass. To ‘muddle’ take the end of a rolling pin or pestle and press until the juices of the cucumber have been released and a paste has been created. Add the mint, gin and St. Germain along with some crushed ice and give it a vigorous stir then top up with apple juice. I hope you will find this drink refreshing and full of flavour. Slainte! They certainly don’t want customers to notice stained walls or sofas, scratches on furniture, or a tear in leather seats. Many of our domestic clients also want to prepare for friends and families visiting over Christmas and New Year and likewise, we often get called in to repair the damage after the ‘party season’ is over! Satisfaction, Guaranteed nRg Boost for

North-East Businesses > wORdS By NIKI TENNANT

It’s sometimes the most unlikely turn of events that inspire us to take our lives in a new direction. Aberdeen’s Debbie Rennie is no exception.

When prominent Aberdeen businessman, Mike Forbes decided to wind down and enjoy semi-retirement, he handed over the management of two of his rental properties to Northwood.

Debbie held a senior in-house marketing role until last summer, when she was made redundant.

It was a leap of faith for landlord Mike, who put his trust in the newcomer to the Aberdeen rental management scene nearly a year ago.

It gave the RGU graduate the impetus to launch her own marketing solutions consultancy, nRg.

Delighted with the service, a confident Mike now plans to add a third flat to the portfolio of Northwood managing director, Steven Mearns and his team. Mike’s son, Peter has also commissioned Northwood to manage the rental of his own flat while he embarks on his further education studies. “I was instantly impressed by Steven’s manner and professionalism and signed up for Northwood’s Platinum Guaranteed rental income scheme, which means I know how much rent I’ll get monthly for a year – regardless of whether the property is occupied,” explained Mike. The growth enjoyed by Northwood Aberdeen in its first nine months has been unprecedented in the franchise’s 16-year history, and pays testimony to the expanding Aberdeen team’s resolute commitment to quality service. Her agile young business is pitched at small to mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). Debbie gets under the skin of her clients’ businesses by becoming an integral part of their team. IT training provider Nicholson Solutions, was one of the first clients to engage nRg to help drive new business. Debbie recently added Coates Offshore, global rental specialists to the offshore oil and gas industry, to her portfolio. Synergy, accountability and a commitment to communication are the values that attract clients, such as Mains of Drum Garden Centre at Drumoak, to nRg. Mains of Drum’s Craig Forbes said: “Debbie has taken time to understand our business and customers, and has provided practical advice and identified new opportunities. She’s easy to work with, enthusiastic and professional.” nRg marketing solutions T: 07779 039269 E: debbie@nrgmarketingsolutions.co.uk www.nrgmarketingsoltuions.co.uk 41

Where else can you watch sharks, go skydiving indoors, eat sandwiches the size of your own head, watch a volcano erupt, ride a rollercoaster inside, climb the Eiffel Tower, be serenaded by a gondolier, go shopping, be plied with free drinks, and get goosed by an Elvis impersonator, all in one day? We settled in at the Bellagio, still the most luxurious option in town and star of the ‘Oceans Eleven’ trilogy. The huge rooms feature marble bathrooms, great beds, fabulous views over the strip and the fountains. It’s relentlessly stylish - you don’t even need to leave the hotel to pick up a few signature pieces at Gucci, Dior or Tiffany (rarely has my beloved walked so fast)! Vegas entertainment means shows. There’s something for everyone - from the cheesy to the sleazy - from megastar headliners like Barry Manilow, Elton John and Cher, to musicals, illusionists and burlesque shows. The Cirque du Soleil has a reputation for staging the most spectacular shows in town and we were unexpectedly and genuinely entranced by LOVE, their polished Beatles spectacular at the Mirage, which was funny, beautiful and moving. LOVE was an undoubted highlight of the trip, and you’ll finally understand why people run off and join the circus.

Las Vegas has been transformed by an influx of big name chefs. The buffets and weekend champagne brunches are still great value for money. The portion sizes explain why many casinos feature moving pavements to haul well-fed patrons inside. People watching is one of the many pleasures the city offers. Visitors range from the skeletally stylish to wearers of some of the most ill-advised shorts ever. When it comes to shopping, there are several designer shopping outlets in and around the town. Chelsea Premium Outlets features around 150 stores from Ferragamo to Herve Leger, and is a short taxi ride away. The Fashion Show Mall is centrally located and is anchored by all the big US department stores, making it ideal for a spot of extreme endurance shopping. Of course if you’re in Vegas, you’ll probably want to spend a portion of your hard-earned cash on gambling. Novices can take advantage of free lessons in table games and poker, where both the rules and etiquette are taught. Still, wherever you stay, whatever you do, in Vegas you’ll always hit the jackpot! 43

They’ve all been under the wing of watchful, gifted mentor, Kim Eason. After laying similar foundations at the University of Northampton, Kim headed north in 2007 to establish a fashion degree course to sit alongside the textile degree at RGU. Presented with the challenge of a blank canvas, she was the architect of a new degree based on creative design, and yet supported by sound technical grounding in a student’s chosen specialism. “The focus is on injecting fresh input into industries in Scotland, who’ve proven to be very supportive of the degree,” explained Kim, who encourages students to tailor their designs towards Scotland’s luxury, niche market in which labels such as Pringle have experienced a renaissance.

Kim cat-walks the talk. She launched her own label, PAtCH, 15 years ago and produces two collections a year which sell in specialist boutiques on the west coast of America. In a claim to fame that simply can’t be matched, one of Kim’s tops was found in the haul of Hollywood actress Winona Ryder, who was arrested for shoplifting in Beverly Hills in 2001. “I’m a believer that if I ask a student to do something, I have to be able to demonstrate a foundation of experience,” said Kim. “I’m very focused on deconstruction – creating future treasures from a fabric that has been used before and has its own history.” Having looked on with pride as the University of Northampton joined the Top 10 courses in the UK for the study of fashion and textiles, the discipline’s founder, Kim, has designs on replicating this achievement at Gray’s. +44 (0) 1224 588905

An increasing number of North-east businesses are hanging their reputation on innovative Aberdeen creative company, Eyecandy graphics. Adrian George, whose experience in the industry spans two decades, has introduced to the North-east the quirky, hi-tech concept of personalised wallpaper. Rather than decorating their walls with logos, corporate colours or abstract art work, companies are calling on Eyecandy graphics to transform their public wall space into floor-to-ceiling images that depict their industry, service or culture. Eyecandy graphics digitally print clients’ own images or stock photographs on to a range of 19 finishes in three ranges of wallpaper. 54

The Eyecandy creative team then create a proof of the client’s approved design digitally printed on the chosen wallpaper. Once signed off, the job is printed, trimmed and even hung on the client’s walls by one-stop-shop, Eyecandy. Stonehaven-based Scape Homes recently commissioned Eyecandy graphics to hang customised wallpaper images of old Arbroath along with reproductions of murals discovered during the early stages of the building work to the luxury apartments at the former Marine Ballroom. The murals had been painted by Polish soldiers who were billeted to Arbroath during World War ll. The Aberdeenphoto.com studio of Aberdeen photographer, Neil Gordon, will also soon have yet another Eyecandy graphics wallpaper print adorning his studio walls.

Eyecandy graphics’ work is also showcased in restaurants and bars, board rooms and oil company training suites, with dramatic results. Adrian, whose business also specialises in competitively-priced canvas prints featuring customers’ own photographs or favourite stock images, has pledged to donate 10% of the sale of Eyecandy canvasses and wallpapers to local and national cancer charities in memory of two late friends. He aims to raise £5000 by the end of 2010. LUEGO SPORTS CARS > wORdS By dAVId GILLANdERS

Now for something completely different, a kit car called the Luego. I met with Ben Lord, 39 years old, the Managing Director of Luego Sports Cars at his workshop in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. This is a family run business as Ben’s Father, Stuart, a Marine Engineer is also very involved and Ben’s Brother Joe who is based in Hull also has an input into the build of the finished vehicle. Ben worked for 14 years with Honda Formula 1 and also McLaren as an Electronics Systems Engineer, so be assured you are not only dealing with a solid family run business but true experts in their field. There are a number of variations, there is the Velocity which starts at £4,800 for the kit and there is also the Viento which comes in at £5,900. You will also require a donor vehicle which ideally should be Ford Sierra based, but soon they will be able to take BMW.

58

The car in our picture, which was beautifully turned out and I particularly liked the Gulf colours, had a Chevrolet LS2 engine. This engine develops 400 bhp, driven through a Ford back axle, 3.6 final drive, giving this particular car a top speed of over 160 mph, 0 – 60 in under 4 seconds. To say this car is lively is an understatement. If you wish to purchase a kit, you need to be aware that the expertise is available, if one requires it, from Ben and his team to help in the build of the car. A fully prepared Luego will cost in the region of £16,000, the car shown below would cost in the region of £35,000. Contact Ben Lord T: 01467 631194 E: info@luegosportscars.com

Please email us before 14 January 2010 at: info@trendmagazine.co.uk. Include your name, address and contact numbers and tell us where you picked up your copy of Trend.

I moved from Glasgow to Aberdeen over 2 ½ years ago. On discovering Trend I was instantly hooked, I had never read the likes of Trend when I lived in Glasgow. Trend certainly helped me familiarise myself with Aberdeen and gave me an understanding of what Aberdeen had to offer. Since moving to Aberdeen I have become very passionate about supporting local businesses and gained an appreciation for the talent and creativity of individuals throughout Aberdeenshire. I love discovering new shops and restaurants that offer the very best of local produce and handmade gifts. I thoroughly enjoy visiting local country farm shops, whether it be for a spot of lunch, cup of tea and a piece of cake or to pick up something different to add to a meal. I have visited a number of the restaurants that have been featured in Trend, again I have never eaten quality food so divine. All in all Aberdeen is a great place to live and has something for everyone to enjoy. Thank you Trend for showing me the very best Aberdeen has to offer. Kirsty Benedetti, Aberdeen, Kirsty was the lucky winner of dinner, to the value of £50, courtesy of 210 Bistro

Dear Trend

Dear Trend

I eagerly await each new copy of ‘Trend’ since I first discovered it, a couple of issues ago. I can honestly say it has brought me a whole new lifestyle dimension by suggesting new shopping outlets, experiences and eateries I would not otherwise be familiar with. I wouldn’t have believed Aberdeen had so many hidden secrets just waiting to be discovered by Trend and shared with the rest of us! Please keep up the good work.

Have had the most relaxing evening I have had for ages reading through Trend and trying the competitions. First time I have seen this lovely magazine and look forward to being kept up to date with more local news items – especially the eating out parts, competitions and advertisements.

Will be reminding my granddaughter to take home the next edition! Ann Garland Inverurie 59

There are only three things that will get me on a dance floor voluntarily. The first is Iggy Pop, the second is the best part of a bottle of Veuve Cliquot and the third is a word from Madame Trend. For some reason, the idea of me learning to salsa provokes quite a lot of disturbing snorting noises and tears from friends and family. Beloved finds the idea so entertaining he gets a pain in his side. I decide he’s coming too.

There are around a dozen people in the Wednesday night class at Soul Pole, with about half being absolute beginners. One chap is from Khazakhstan, which is commitment for you. You don’t need a partner as everyone swaps around regularly, meaning you get to tread on a lot of different toes! Since everyone is learning, no-one minds when you turn in the wrong direction or find yourself on the wrong foot, and Yuri combines irrepressibly enthusiasm and gentle patience. Yuri says salsa is good for reducing stress, improving fitness, losing weight, and making friends. It should probably be offered on the NHS. There are classes in Aberdeen, Ellon and Inverurie and a great salsa party night every couple of weeks at the Station Hotel. Aberdeen Salsa also offer very popular corporate events and hen parties. The basic steps aren’t difficult and within an hour, everyone is happily sashaying their socks off. Even Beloved, who works in IT and therefore dances like he’s listening to a different tune from everyone else, has got the beat by the end of the class, twirling away with the best of them. Rhythm may be a dancer, but it’s clear that I am not going to be troubling Darcy Bussell anytime soon. If anything could change that, though, it’d be Aberdeen Salsa. www.aberdeensalsa.co.uk or contact Yuri on 0787 6474405 or yuri@latinbeats.co.uk 62

MUSIC

Chris RObb > wORdS By dAVId NICHOLSON

You have to hand it to Chris Robb; the man knows how to be dramatic. In 2002, the then-amateur filmmaker quit a day job he had no passion for and moved to Hollywood to follow his dream of directing movies. “It was after a chance encounter with director, Steven Lewis Simpson,” says Chris. “This guy was from Aberdeen, yet holding his own in Hollywood – something I’d only dreamed was possible. I was inspired.” Chris was soon accepted into a year-long filmmaking course based at Universal Studios, Hollywood.

Chris recalls encounters with directing heroes like Bryan Singer and Steven Soderbergh. But this Hitchcock obsessed film-noir fan didn’t have time to be starstruck. “It was amazing,” he recalls. ”From day one I had a camera in my hands, and by the first weekend I was editing my first short.” Completing the course, Chris moved to London to work for a TV production company but soon, the old frustrations arose again. He explains: “One of my tutors would say, “If you want to make films, make films.

It’s too easy to get distracted working in TV.” So I moved home and started Tripswitch Productions”. A 2007 trip to the Cannes film festival with business partner Richard Burke saw Chris adding to his list of industry contacts. Tripswitch are now developing a number of projects with parties on both sides of the Atlantic. Top priority is a project to be set and filmed in Aberdeen. The script completed, Tripswitch will be talking to investors soon. They hope to begin shooting in Spring 2010. For further information go to www.tripswitchproductions.com

Laura Barker

You’re invited to attend an Interview with...

> wORdS By NIKI TEN NANT

Laura Barker founded the jobs board service, JobsinScotland.com, eight years ago. JobsinAberdeen.com – part of the group over which Laura presides – is now the no.1 ranking site on Google for positions in the city. Entrepreneur Laura is on the verge of launching her latest venture: JobsinOil.com. Trend invited her to share with us her ‘alternative’ c.v.... Your first job? At the age of 12, I had the longest and least lucrative newspaper round in history, cycling two miles each morning between Banchory and Inchmarlo for £1. Your most rewarding job? It has to be my role as a foster carer for unwanted dogs. I’m currently caring for Benjy, a 12-year-old Jack Russell, whose elderly owners are no longer able to look after him. He’s kept me awake for five nights, but it’s worth it. 74

Ever been sacked? No, but I have left ‘by mutual agreement’! Who’s your fantasy colleague? I have two: Simon Cowell, because he’s an independent thinker whose opinions are never influenced by anyone else, and Richard Farleigh of Dragon’s Den fame. He had a very difficult childhood and overcame massive challenges to succeed against all odds, which is amazing.

To whom in public life wold you say: You’re fired!” As a life-long Tory voter, I was perplexed when watching a recent Andrew Marr interview with Conservative leader, David Cameron. Throughout, Cameron was pompous and belligerent and, I thought, considered himself to be doing the presenter a favour. (Okay, I had just given up smoking, so may have been a little less tolerant than usual…)
