I thought it was about time to introduce everyone to you all properly and from each issue you’ll hear about what’s been happening with us as well as what’s in the magazine. Trend is a real team effort, so I thought we should mark this issue by showing you the team that helps make each issue of the magazine special and unique and thank them for their work behind the scenes.

These are the wonderful women who deal with everything that you don’t see on the page. They do everything from organising our events to dealing with advertising and business development, from keeping our accounts in order to managing every aspect of the company. They, more than anyone, have helped Trend grow and become the magazine it is today.

Aberdeen’s beauty secret One of Aberdeen’s best kept beauty secrets is hidden away inside the Nuffield Health Centre and Gym on Justice Mill Lane. Although OUCH Nails and Beauty has been on site for two years, its location means that many Trend readers may have missed out on one of the city’s friendliest and skilled full service salons.

From the moment Mama, the receptionist greets you, you’ll feel at home.

Ouch is justifiably popular with the gym’s members, but you don’t need to be a member at Nuffield to take advantage of all that the team have to offer.

Ouch carries the Guinot line of face and body treatments and products which are used at over 10,000 salons and spas world-wide.

Guinot doesn’t test any of their products on animals, but if the improvements in skin tone, texture, hydration and softness we 10

experienced after trying out a few samples is anything to go by, we’re sure they have no shortage of volunteer testers in Paris.

Ouch also offers the only GuinotTechniSpa treatment machine north of Perthshire. It’s designed to improve the appearance of cellulite, leaving the skin looking toned and lifted through a combination of stimulation, electronic ionisation and lipo-aspiration.

Three Fish & Chips Please...

Fish and Chips or the ‘Fish Supper’ as it’s fondly referred to here in Scotland is something we all know and love... > WORDS by GILL bUyERS

We’ve all had moments when you just have to have fish and chips... Trend went on the search of three different venues where Fish and Chips is always on the menu.

The wood lined bar area of Cape Horn Lounge Bar at the Mariner Hotel is a popular bar supper venue with locals and visitors alike. The menu has their signature stables but they have a good daily selection of specials on offer also.

Having an upmarket fish restaurant, Atlantis, also attached to the hotel you can be assured of the freshest fish being offered. Ours was delicious. The perfectly cooked fish was flaky, as it should be and the batter wasn’t too thick or soggy, my pet hate! Accompanied by peas, chunky chips and homemade tartare sauce what more could you ask for, ketchup please!

The award winning Bay Chip Shop in Stonehaven was our carry out venue. They specialise in being able to offer fish cooked for allergy sufferers and they have won numerous awards. The take away fish and chip supper

from here was freshly cooked to order for us and our mouths watered as we waited.

The end result was truly fab we sat in the car eating the delicious offering which brought back fond childhood memories.

Finally, we got dressed up for the Courtyard restaurant’s ‘Posh Scampi’. The beautifully presented ’Panko Breadcrumbed Monkfish Tail with Handcut Chunky Chips & Tangy Tartare Sauce’ was presented with the flair and appearance you would expect from this lovely dining destination. The outer bread crumbed coating was crispy and light and the fish inside was firm and meaty as it should be. This was definitely a real treat!

FIFE ARMS,TURRIFF People often describe a favourite restaurant by saying that the food they serve simply ‘melts in your mouth.’ Being a cynic, I am never convinced because for me, this has never actually happened with anything other than ice cream. After hearing it said on numerous occasions about the Fife Arms Hotel, I decided to take a drive out and see if I could find some truth to this somewhat overused turn of phrase.

The Fife Arms stands on the Square in Turriff, thirty straightforward miles northwest of Aberdeen. Upon walking through the door, you find yourself in a cosy sitting room full of plump leather sofas and armchairs that you sink into before being handed your glass of wine and a menu to peruse. Brimming with everything from seasonal game to an abundance of seafood – all locally sourced –

the only dilemma presented by the menu and specials board is narrowing down your choice.

Eventually, I settled on the seared Shetland salmon starter, followed by langoustine on a bed of linguine and finished off with sticky toffee pudding. My dining companion, who kindly tolerated my requests for bites, opted for the mushroom risotto starter, chicken

in a spiced Moroccan tomato sauce, and a chocolate crème brûlée accompanied by Turkish delight ice cream.

Served in a dining area that unites contemporary style with rustic charm, the food provides a unique taste experience that can only be achieved through the combination of good ideas and high-quality fresh ingredients.

Besides enjoying a fantastic meal, I finally learned that some dishes – in particular the langoustine and sticky toffee pudding – can be prepared so perfectly, they seem to disappear, or melt, in your mouth before you’ve even had a chance to chew.

Q & A's Why did you decide to become a chef?

I’ve always had a passion for cooking and have enjoyed doing it for my friends and family. My food always received good feedback from them, which made me realise I should turn my passion into a career.

Tell us how you became to be in your current job? The Store was one of my favourite places to buy ingredients to cook at home, so when I saw they were hiring, I had to enquire. At a meeting with owner Andrew Booth, I was keen to impress, so I bought some of The Store’s own silverside beef.

I smoked it in my home smoker, and it was a hit!

After a couple of trial shifts, I became a permanent fixture in The Store kitchen.

How would you describe the food you offer at The Store? At The Store we offer great homecooked food made from top-quality produce from our own farm and local area. I would say we serve classic favorites with a modern twist.

What do you love about cooking and your job? I love experimenting with cooking; the thing I love about my job is cooking with good local ingredients, which is why I love working at The Store, which produces all its own beef and lamb. There is nothing better than cooking with ingredients that you have seen being reared right where you work.

What's the first thing you learnt to cook?

The first thing I remember making regularly was a stir-fry; I loved how it allowed me to play with different textures and flavours.

Is there a cut of meat you feel is particularly underrated? I would say beef skirt is one of the most underrated. I often marinate beef skirt in a balsamic barbecue sauce for a week, which makes the meat very tender. Then it just needs to be cooked for a minute on each side, which makes it ideal for a BBQ.

Ingredients 2tbsp olive oil | Knob of butter | 1 onion, finely chopped 500g sausage meat or skinned sausages | Grated zest of 1 lemon 100g fresh white breadcrumbs | 85g dried apricots, chopped 50g chestnuts, canned or vacuum-packed, chopped 2tsp chopped fresh thyme | 100g cranberries 500g boneless, skinless turkey breasts (or leftover roast turkey) 500g shortcrust pastry | 1 beaten egg, to glaze | Salt and pepper

Ingredients 4 carrots grated | 12 brussels sprouts shredded Zest of 2 oranges | 120 g dried cranberries | 16tbsp mayonnaise 1tsp salt | 1tsp pepper

Method 1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a frying pan and add the butter. Add the onion and fry for 5 mins until softened. Cool slightly.

2. Tip the sausage meat, lemon zest, breadcrumbs, apricots, chestnuts and thyme into a bowl. Add the onion and cranberries, and mix everything together with your hands, adding plenty of pepper and a little salt.

3. Cut each turkey breast into three fillets lengthwise and season all over with salt and pepper. Heat the remaining oil in the frying pan, and fry the fillets quickly until browned, about 6-8 mins.

4. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry to line a 20-23cm springform or deep loose-based tart tin. Press in half of the sausage mix and spread to level. Then add the turkey pieces in one layer and cover with the rest of the sausage. Press down lightly.

5. Roll out the remaining pastry. Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg and cover with the pastry lid. Pinch the edges to seal, then trim. Brush the top of the pie with egg, then roll out the trimmings to make holly leaf shapes and berries. Decorate the pie and brush again with egg.

6. Set the tin on a baking sheet and bake for 50-60 mins, then cool in the tin for 15 mins. Remove and leave to cool completely.

Serve with a winter salad and pickles

Method 1. Grate carrots and shred brussels sprouts (I use a food processor but grater works just as well) 2. Mix the carrots and sprouts together in a bowl 3. Grate the zest of the oranges in to the bowl with the sprouts and carrots 4. Add the dried cranberries 5. Add the mayonnaise and mix all the ingredients together 6. Season with salt and pepper

Movember comes to Each year, during the month formerly known as November, men around the world grow a moustache to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues - specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

Thank Havens for style If you’re old enough to have given up on TopShop, but not on looking stylish, then Elizabeth Havens should definitely be top of your shopping list. With two shops in Laurencekirk and a new shop in Stonehaven, it’s rather like taking a trip round your own dream wardrobe!

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and can provide impartial expert advice if you want to try a new look. They’re also happy to let you browse the colour co-ordinated racks to your heart’s content. And your heart will be pretty content given business partners, Elizabeth and Helen’s great eye for design that will remain wearable for more than a month or two. It’s a well-curated collection that offers everything from school run chic to standout bandage dresses. We loved the well tailored separates from Olsen and a pair of butter-soft suede trousers from Marc Aurel. Much of the stock can’t be found elsewhere and is priced well for the quality on offer. Being stylish is rarely this straightforward!

Given that the first shop started out two years ago as a bespoke costume jewellery, childrenswear and gift retailer, it’s no surprise that jewellery and accessories are a strong suit. You’ll find a great range of classic and quirky bags, scarves, hosiery and gloves in store. The range from Italian designer, Elisa Cavaletti is a standout.

And as a final touch, Elizabeth can even make you a bespoke piece of jewellery from freshwater pearls and crystals that will draw admiring, and maybe one or two envious, glances.

SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED recently i had the pleasure on the same day of road testing the latest mini Cooper s All 4 Countryman and the BmW X1, 2 litre diesel m sport. To make my comparison i drove them both over one of my favourite roads in Aberdeenshire the Cairn o'mount.

A breed apart Angela Davidson exemplifies that rare type of artist, being self-taught, highly skilled and producing popular work. Her striking animal portraits suit both country interiors and urban spaces alike, and her prints and originals are both accessible and immaculately executed.

Angela knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age. “Deciding a career path was easy.

At school, the only two things I was good at were sport and art. As no one would pay me for running as fast as I could, the choice was made for me,” she laughed.

Over the years, her style has evolved; “I now work solely with pastel on paper. It’s quick and very effective. Ideas for new work are usually inspired from photos we take at events around the country,” she added.

Angela works from her studio, gallery and workshops at home near Insch. “Up until about 2003 my art was very conventional.

Then I tried something different: doing really detailed close-up work of cattle, then sheep, then horses. In 2006, I took my first original of a black Highland bull to the Royal Highland Show. The original was sold before we even arrived there and the prints flew.

Angela’s prints provide an affordable entree into buying art for those who’ve never purchased before, with many being produced in strictly limited editions. Prices start below £50, which represents great value for such striking work.

I used to paint lots of different subjects, but when my husband Sandy and I began exhibiting at the main agricultural shows and 60

Aberdeenshire’s most creative couple?

It can’t always be easy working alongside your other half, but Aberdeenshire makers Jonathan and Belinda Rose find harmony in making furniture and working with textiles in their workshops in Hirn near Banchory.

Jonathan has been making furniture for thirty years and got started because he wanted quality pieces and good design for his home and decided the best way was to produce them himself. Two years ago, he became a full time craftsman-designer, working to commission and showing at arts fairs and during NEOS. Belinda uses her computer to create complex layered textiles which she weaves on her power loom. His/her work is a constant process of invention and new techniques. She’s currently producing woven portraits. “I start with 62

an image which inspires me, usually one of my own drawings, paintings or photos or combination of these. My range of subject matter is wide, from landscape scenes, flowers, birds to pre and post operative x-rays, at the other extreme.

“I’ve worked with natural fibres, linen, cotton, wool and silk, but I don’t restrict myself to these. I’ve used wooden dowels, paper yarns, and newer yarns such as phosphorescent yarn which glows in the dark, and high twist yarns which contract when taken off the loom,” Belinda explained.

Both Belinda and Jonathan enjoy the process of working closely with clients to create something unique and are looking forward to combining their talents more in the future, should the right opportunity arise. So far, the couple have upholstered one of Johnathan’s chairs in a fabric produced

by Belinda and are interested in collaborating more in future.

Both Belinda and Jonathan have their own approach to the creative process.

Jonathan, who is influenced by natural forms and Art Deco lines, said, “I look at the functional requirement and then look at the location it will be placed.

When working with a client this is often about solving a problem or making something which they are unable to find elsewhere. Ideas can stem from the client and in this situation I see it as my job to become an interpreter. The materials I have used so far have been limited to wood, but I'm open to other ideas as my design vocabulary grows”.

For Belinda, whose influences include weavers Bhakti Ziek and Lia Cook in the US, almost anything can provide a starting point. “My taste in art is eclectic which shows in my work. I don’t yet have a particular signature, I love to explore,” she continued.

Belinda’s work also features at NEOS and a number of joint exhibitions throughout the year, such as Fabric of the Land, an event organised by Smart for the University of Aberdeen Department Of Geology.

And are there any drawbacks to working so closely with your other half? Jonathan admits that conflicting deadlines give rise to the odd problem, saying, “There is something about creativity which means we are often thinking about what is possible, something in the future.

This occasionally results in the present being a bit chaotic!”

Royal Deeside Retreat to

Few people would turn down the opportunity to trade city life for a weekend hideaway in a woodland retreat, but normally such a luxury involves a lot of planning and a long drive. So when I realised that the Loch Kinord Hotel and its Royal Deeside Woodland Lodges were a mere forty minutes from Aberdeen, I threw a few essentials into the car, loaded in the husband and children, and headed off.

Before I knew it, we found ourselves engulfed in a canopy of endless rows of evergreen trees that stand sentry along the roadside and receive you through the Eastern Gateway to the Cairngorm National Park – suddenly, the city seemed very far away indeed. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, a jaunt into Aboyne wouldn’t go amiss or if you’re looking for a wedding venue, you will want to introduce yourself to the fairytale Glen Tanar Chapel.

Although the lodges offer excellent facilities for self-catering, it would be negligent to miss out on the chance to dine in the hotel’s restaurant.

Rarely have I had a dining experience that simultaneously makes the adults feel like they are in a first class restaurant while still offering food the children will love. From the homemade bread through to the delectable desserts, you will not be served anything that isn’t beautifully presented and, wherever possible, created using organic local produce.

It is often the case that we fail to consider the holiday destinations that are literally on our doorstep, but I can tell you that Dinnet is a destination not to be missed. Hello Sailor Kate Gray harbours an affection for the Maritime Museum I’m sure I’m not alone when I admit that – having lived in Aberdeen for most of my life – I have always taken the city’s maritime heritage for granted. So, when I went along to the Maritime Museum in Shiprow, I certainly wasn’t expecting to learn as much as I did.

The museum itself is cleverly spread across three buildings – a converted church, a glass link building, and Provost Ross’ House, which was built in 1593. The layout of the museum, and the way the buildings have been integrated means that it is not a museum that is big and drafty – it is far more personal, and the unusual exhibits and the strong 70

focus on the lives of the people in the fishing, shipbuilding, and oil industries reflect this.

In the church there is an old telephone that you can use to dial different numbers and listen to recorded interviews with men who worked in the fishing industries, while the old Provost’s house is now home to beautiful models and pictures of the world famous Aberdeen built clipper ships and in the link building there is a vast, suspended scale model of a rig.

During my visit there was a man with two young trainees having a discussion while they looked at the rig, and I was not surprised to

learn that companies often send new starts to the museum, and that people who work offshore take their families in to give them an idea of what they do, and where they go.

I would say too, that I have never been anywhere in Aberdeen that has such amazing views of the busy harbour that has, for so long, and during many industrial periods, been this city’s livelihood.

jumping fish. Although bait fishing is an option, the passion is fly fishing, with tuition available to all ages and abilities.

This being a fashion magazine, my boys were a bit unnerved when i told them they’d be trying out fishnets for our next family feature. Fortunately – for all of us – the only fishnets required during our visit to the Lochter Activity Centre in oldmeldrum were the type actually used to net fish.

Lochter, which sits unobtrusively in the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside, offers twenty acres of fishing in a variety of lakes and ponds, one of which is shaped like a giant

Having never held a fly fishing rod before, the kids and I opted to try our hand at this graceful sport under the patient guidance of Stuart, the centre’s fishing manager. I would like to say that I was a natural, but Stuart very gently assured me that this was not the case and, once again, my children’s skills put me to shame. After learning the most important fishing skill of all – patience – we did manage to reel in two of the centre’s hefty rainbow trout, a triumph that immediately converts a novice into an addict.

If you’re looking to entertain a large group but fishing doesn’t appeal to everyone, then Lochter is still the place to go. While you enjoy some quiet time with rod and reel, the others can enjoy a host of other activities – from karting to digger driving to walking on water in an inflatable zorb – then reunite over a hot meal in the centre’s restaurant.

Before I visited Lochter, I thought that fishing was all about catching fish.

After all this Aberdeen based quartet play a kind of 80’s-style rock’n’roll that has more in common with the neon signs of LA's Sunset Strip than the Christmas lights of Union Street in wintertime.

Yet in some ways, they’re a perfect fit for the festive season. After all, if there was ever a time to forget the daily grind, let your hair down and have a party, it is now. And if there was ever a band who want to do that all year round, it is Estrella.

Sure, they could be accused of being out of step with the latest musical trends, but Estrella couldn’t care less about that stuff. And that’s what I love about them. They march to the beat of their own (rock) drum.

The album has it all: the Steven Tyler-esque vocals, Van Halen-y keyboard stabs and virtuoso guitar solos; there’s even a power ballad. It’s like the soundtrack to an awesome ‘80s teen film you never knew existed. Put it this way: Bill & Ted would love these guys (and for some of us, that's high praise indeed).

If you’ve ever felt the urge to air-guitar along to Aerosmith or Guns’n’Roses, or pump your fist in the air to Motley Crue or Poison, Estrella may well be the most unlikely Christmas present you didn’t even know you wanted.

And here’s the kicker - Estrella may look like they’re just having a good time being in a kick-ass-rock-band, but these are some talented guys who take their music as seriously as any band I could name. When I went to the Dirty Dancing Scottish premier in Glasgow I was expecting a show. I knew it would be loud, and lively, and very, very pink, but what I hadn’t counted on was the sheer energy of the thing – and not just from the cast, from the audience too.

There was dancing and proclamations of “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” long before the stars set foot on stage – what can only be described as the most energetic crowd I have ever seen had started the party before they had even had their tickets checked at the theatre door.

Inside the theatre, I was surrounded by groups of women in cocktail dresses,

jeans, or ‘I carried a watermelon’ t-shirts, all singing, dancing and – I’m going to say it – having the time of their lives…

In two hours, the outstanding cast barely stopped twirling, kicking, and lifting – I have never seen dancing like it (and I’ve seen the film). The clever addition of some new scenes meant that even the most diehard fans were in for some surprises.

If you have seen the film – you’re going to love this show, and if you haven’t seen the film – you’re going to love this show. Whether or not you’re a

lifelong fan, the dancing is spectacular, the music is great, and the audience is a show in itself.

Dreams Come True Ball The Annual Dreams Come True Ball (DCT) was held in The Marcliffe Spa and Hotel.

The original instigators of this fund raising ball were suitably dressed as John Travolta to reflect the balls “Saturday Night Fever” theme. This year some 38 fund raisers headed out to take part in New York City’s Marathon. All completed the marathon and a sum in excess of £150,000 has been raised for the benefit of the Children’s charities ARCHIE and DCT.

HIT Scotland raises money to support the emerging talent within the Hospitality Industry by offering support through experience, bursaries and scholarships. The fifth HIT Grampian Dinner took place in The Marcliffe Hotel. The event attracted influential figures from all sectors of the Hospitality Industry including senior management, hoteliers and restaurateurs as well as suppliers to the industry, including recruitment and legal services. It was a long way to go to spend just 27 minutes on the rugby fields of New Zealand but Aberdeen’s international scrum half, Chris Cusiter, has put the disappointments of the 2011 World Cup behind him. The Glasgow Warrior has set his sights firmly on regaining the number one spot in Scotland’s team that begins the 2012 Six Nations campaign against England at Murrayfield on February 4.

“To be honest, I was fortunate to be in the squad to go to the World Cup because I had had a long lay-off through injury and was short of match practice,” he said over soft drinks at the Amicus Apple bar-bistro in Aberdeen in which he has a stake.

“It meant I fell behind in the pecking order for the number 9 shirt and was only used as a replacement However, it was great to be back in New Zealand as I had been there as the Otaki Scholar from my school, Robert Gordon’s College, and again with the British and Irish Lions in 2005.”

Chris and his Glasgow teammates signed up for the Movember moustache campaign to raise awareness of male 86

cancer research, a subject close to his heart as his lawyer dad, Stan, fought prostate cancer for six years before he died in July last year . “Dad played rugby to a high standard as a back with Gordonians and North-Midlands and was an inspiration to me and my brother Calum,” Chris added.

Now 29, the former Border Reiver and Perpignan scrum half with 55 caps for his country, has just signed a contract until May 2015 to see out his career with Glasgow Warriors. No doubt, Chris was helped to come to his decision by his agent, former international Rowen Shepherd, of Red Sky Management, who has a cluster of top Scottish players under his wing.

As to life after rugby, Chris is cutting his teeth as a speaker and has a law degree from Edinburgh University to fall back on, not to mention a doctorate from Aberdeen University. In the meantime, he and his Aberdeen-based girlfriend, Sarah Dixon, a qualified yoga teacher who works in marketing, share one special friend. Yes, it is their loveable and good-natured black Labrador, Cali.
