The coolest mechanical chronograph of the Seventies is back: The TAG Heuer SILVERSTONE To celebrate and pay homage to 150 years of pioneering design, TAG Heuer is reissuing one of its most iconic creations of all time: the SILVERSTONE chronograph.

The new TAG Heuer Silverstone Calibre 11 chronograph is a limited edition of 3000 pieces and comes in blue or brown dial and alligator strap. £4,500

Originally launched in 1974, the SILVERSTONE chronograph gets its name from the famous racetrack of the same name. The top drivers of the 1970s admired the SILVERSTONE chronograph for its unique shape and avant-garde look, and the buzz they generated helped make it a style icon of the period. In 1974, the year the SILVERSTONE was launched, Clay Regazzoni and Emerson Fittipaldi became TAG Heuer ambassadors. The two legendary drivers chose the chronograph as personal lucky charms. Design has always been an essential component of TAG Heuer DNA, but the company has become the world leader of prestigious sports watches and chronographs by breaking its rules and challenging its conventions. The SILVERSTONE’s distinctive and vintage design — a squared case with rounded edges in polished stainless steel — was based on another breakthrough timepiece of the period, Steve McQueen’s 1969 Monaco. Softer edged, graced with a colourful dial, totally new shape, and fully loaded with leading-edge chronograph functionality, the SILVERSTONE became a defining symbol of the 1970s, and a coveted design object ever since.

From left to right: Emmanuel de Graffenried, the very first ambassador of the Silverstone racetrack, in 1949; Clay Regazzioni and Emerson Fittipaldi became TAG Heuer ambassador in 1974, and wore it as a lucky charm.

The SILVERSTONE was initially powered by the Chronomatic Calibre 11 automatic movement, developed in cooperation with Dubois Dépraz, Breitling and Hamilton-Büren, and launched in 1969 as the world’s first automatic chronograph movement with micro-rotor. Typical characteristics of the movement are the date counter at 6 o’clock and the two pushbuttons, placed across from the crown in two indentations. To keep the counters, pushbuttons and crown configuration of the original, the new SILVERSTONE’s movement is the Calibre 11 with a Dubois-Depraz module. The re-edition is faithful to the original — not just the same bold mix of round and square and the distinctive technical features, but also the same vintage “HEUER” logo and “SILVERSTONE” lettering at 12 o’clock, and a strap in top-grade perforated alligator. With its disruptive blend of sport and style, and resolutely geometrical design, the SILVERSTONE is a perfect example of TAG Heuer daring, and a standard bearer of its famous motto: “Swiss Avant-Garde Since 1860.”

Anyone who needs persuading that the Lose and Shape Up programme at David Lloyd Aberdeen really works should simply take a look at Cathy Lewis. Cathy, of Garthdee, enlisted for the inaugural 12-week programme with personal trainer Struan Robertson – and the results were dramatic. By the end of the programme, which combines nutrition advice with group exercise instruction, Cathy had shed 6.7 kg and lost an incredible seven inches from her waist, hips and chest.

12

“My diabetes was making me feel unwell and sluggish,” explained the new-look, toned Cathy (26). “Now, I can’t remember a time in my life when I’ve felt healthier and more energetic.” Collectively, the 12 members on Cathy’s programme lost 53 kg and 50 inches from the hips, waist and chest. Said Struan: “For the many people whose good intentions made over the New Year are fading away, the Lose and Shape Up programme is ideal.”

Hollywood Hair

HAIR FEATURE

> wOrds by NIKI TENNANT

The paparazzi will be tripping over their own step ladders to capture Hollywood’s most glittering stars on their journey across the red carpet to the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony on March 9.

Using large square sections, comb damp hair1 straight up and roll in Velcro rollers, starting at the front hairline, working backdown head. Damp hair gives a stronger curl to hold the look.

Whether it is your wedding, work do or you just fancy getting glammed up for a night out with the girls, stealing a Hollywood starlet’s style is a great way to look good enough to stake your claim to a place on Hollywood Boulevard’s Hall of Fame.

Give your hair a blast with a hairdryer in a circular motion and unwind velcros once dry.

Trend reader, Jackie, visited the style experts at an Aberdeen hair and beauty salon, who recreated a glammed-up version of this stunning look sported by Nicole Kidman’s character in the film, Nine – which promises to sweep the boards. Here are their tips to achieve Oscarwinning hair:

Backcomb crown area using a skinny tooth comb. Make sure the roots are standing straight up, you can always flatten it but you can’t make it bigger later! Smooth over the backcombing just on the top of the crown, making sure you maintain height. Gather into half ponytail and pin with a few hair grips. Push grips in and upwards so they’re not visible.

If you don’t have a fringe take a large section at the front and loosely pin to one side. Brush through longer curls to create a smooth finish. Jackie said “I’m getting married this year and I think this look would be perfect, glam but quite understated. I love it!” This dramatic look was created by Lorraine Watson, owner of award-winning Aberdeen salon, Hatstand Nelly. Funky & fabulous Looking Lush in Alford Alford looks set to become the rural beauty capital of Aberdeenshire. Looking Lush have set up shop inside Parade, and offer a refreshing approach to beauty, combining top quality services with a quirky atmosphere. Few other salons boast skull wallpaper, or knickers festooned over changing room curtains. The salon’s owner, Elaine Pope elaborates, “I had established a busy business working as a beautician and providing make up for bridal parties. Eventually, the business grew too big for my home studio, and so when Parade offered me the space, I jumped at it.” Looking Lush offer spray-tanning, nails, facials, massages, waxing and threading as well as an impressive array of packages such as pick and mix

options, Get Glam Quick and Get Glam and Stay Glam. They’re widely recognised as the go-to girls for Bridal makeup, offering fixed price packages that include trials, travel and even a touch up kit for the big day. “We take the bride’s personality and preferences into account,” smiles Elaine, who trained in bridal make-up with Jemma Kidd. “Sometimes brides are all made to look the same and they end up not feeling like themselves. We can apply airbrushed makeup, for example, that looks flawless, but it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything.” Looking Lush and Parade are fast becoming Alford’s most popular destination for a day out. Both are buzzing with fun and excitement. You can have lunch in the cafe, have a glass of bubbly on Fizzy Fridays, pick up a new outfit or a new look, have a laugh,

relax and feel good about yourself “We want to be the Harvey Nics of Alford,” giggles Elaine. “Destination shopping for anyone that wants to look good and feel good. People come in here, have a good time and leave feeling happy and looking lush – that’s our goal!” Looking Lush @ Parade 59 Main Street Alford AB33 8PX T: 019755 64480 23

Who is your right hand kitchen buddy and why? I operate the kitchen with a small team, so you could say I have 4 right hand kitchen buddies, John, Ginta, Nick and Jack Which country in the world do you think should be crowned culinary king, and why? I think Britain is - without a doubt - the best place for dining out. We have some of the best produce around, from the Shetlands right down to the south coast, that are better than anywhere else in the world... In your life, who’s the amateur cook you most admire and why? It’s got to be my mum….You can’t beat home cooking! Where did you last dine out and what did you choose? I last dined out at the Cameron Grill, in Cameron House at Loch Lomond. I ordered quite simply - scallops to start - and a 45 day, dry aged rib eye steak to follow…heaven! Which dish or ingredient would you resign to Room 101? I truly believe there is a place for every ingredient - its just about finding the right way of using it. There are certain ingredients that you can use at home that really make a dish - that you may never use in a restaurant kitchen and vise versa. When you seek culinary inspiration, which cooking bible do you reach for first? If I need any culinary inspiration I speak to my suppliers to see what great ingredients are available and in season then take it from there. At the moment, I have started looking through my Fat duck cook book- not really for inspiration, but to just look at in amazement. Some of the stuff in there is crazy.

Ingredients: 250g dark chocolate 200g butter 2 eggs 80g egg yolk 60g caster sugar 50g flour

Before you start it’s a good idea to prepare your cooking moulds, ideally use ramekins or some other individual oven proof mould Or you can use a deep, straight sides muffin tray. To prepare your mould, brush with melted butter then dust with coccoa powder, chill, then repeat. Keep in fridge until needed.

./%$.0'&'()*&/11!%$%!

To make the souffle Melt your butter and chocolate in a bowl over simmering water, then whisk the egg yolks and sugar until it thickens and turns almost white in colour. Its best to use an electric whisk for this as it takes a long time. Sieve your flour and melted stir into your chocolate. Now add 1/3 of your whisked into the chocolate mixture egg mixture and stir till fully mixed in, then add the rest and mix together. Pour into your prepared mould.

dinner review: Raemoir House A sweeping driveway leads to the impressive Georgian mansion that is Raemoir House Hotel. Only 2 miles from Banchory, Raemoir boasts 2 AA rosettes and is open to non-residents. Pre-dinner drinks were taken in the drawing room, which oozed traditional charm, in front of a log fire with a pianist playing. Dinner was served in the wood-panelled dining room, where the 3 course menu is changed daily according to what chef has sourced; it offered a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains (both courses included an interesting vegetarian option) and 5 desserts. The interesting wine list has a good mix of old and new world with forays into some of the lesser known grapes and

regions. We went for a Bordeaux from the Cotes De Castillon appellation. Chateau La Grande Maye, 2003 shouts of cedar, liquorice, blackcurrant and bramble on the scent, leading to structured flavours of dark berries and spice. £29.00. I began with a ballontine of quail complemented with thyme roast plum and butternut puree, and across the table was a delicate oak smoked salmon with sweet pickled cucumber, crème fraiche and cheese scones. An espresso cup of full flavoured butternut and parmesan veloute preceded our main courses. For me, a sirloin of tender Scottish beef, sliced and served with thyme Dauphinoise potatoes, plum tomato confit, onion Lyonnaise and wood land mushrooms, all classic accompaniments given a delicious twist. supper review: The Broadstraik Inn The Broadstraik Inn in Elrick is just 8 miles west of Aberdeen and has been a country inn since 1905. The aromas of home cooking and the burning log fires were a lovely warm welcome, especially given that the snow was still deep outside. Dark wood floors, a beamed ceiling and traditional furnishings all enhanced the traditional country pub feel. The evening menu has all the pub classics - steak pie, burgers, sausage and mash and scampi, as well as dishes with Asian and Mediterranean twists. The kid’s menu offers scaled down versions of the classics. Ingredient sources are listed

on the menu with many North East suppliers. Go hungry as portions, in true country style, are hearty. This was my reason for opting out of the starter (that, and the fact that the dessert menu should have been renamed ‘Carol’s favourite puddings’; more of which later.) On our Saturday evening visit we were looked after by a friendly, young team. Younger son began with a comforting lentil soup (£2.25) and followed with burger and fries (£5.95), whilst my husband kicked off with goats cheese fritter on tomato bruschetta.(£5.95) My battered haddock was crisp and

finished with a red wine jus and drizzled with Bearnaise sauce. The roast fillet of pork and crispy belly across from me was also thoughtfully well married with creamed celeriac, slow braised red cabbage, caramelised baby onions and apple and rosemary compote. Desserts were excellent. For me, a crisp, buttery tart tatin, and for him a fragranced lemon grass crème brulee. With my love of dessert wine, it would have been rude not to have a glass of the Chateau Du Cros 2004 from a small estate that I had previously visited in Loupiac. Service was professional and attentive throughout. Dinner is £35.00 per person. Raemoir House Hotel Raemoir,, Banchory Aberdeenshire AB31 4ED T: 01330 824884 E: hotel@raemoir.com, www.raemoir.com

Nino Khan combines a passion for cooking with a love of teaching people to cook and appreciate food from both her native Pakistan and India.

She teaches Indian cookery evening classes at Westhill Academy and Aberdeen Grammar School, specialising in authentic dishes and a simple approach. Each course lasts over three terms and starts with simple dishes using just a few ingredients, then builds to more elaborate dishes. “The classes are very sociable and people pick up skills and confidence to cook very quickly. A lot of what we make is healthy and low in fat and people enjoy taking dishes home and trying them on their family and friends.” So successful were some of Nino’s dishes that she branched out to become a food entrepreneur, making her own sauce – Nino’s Masala - which is now available from a number of local delis and gourmet and natural foods specialists including Newton Dee and The Store at Foveran. Nino’s uses fresh, natural ingredients and 32

spices to produce her wonderfully versatile Masala. “Masala just means a mixture of spices,” she explains. Each batch is hand prepared in Nino’s own kitchen and contains onions, tomatoes, fresh ginger, garlic and her secret blend of spices. “Visitors to the house love the smell when I’m preparing the Masala Sauce, but my sons complain sometimes! You can add your own spices or herbs to the sauce to make a huge variety of dishes. It’s like a base sauce that’s great by itself, but also wonderful with a few of your own touches.” So what’s next for Aberdeen’s Curry Queen? “At the moment, I teach people in their own homes or in mine, and do some private catering and corporate team building events, but I’d love my own cookery school one day. My husband says he’d like me to open a restaurant though, so he can retire!” Nino Khan T: 01224 592701 E: ninokhan2003@hotmail.com

Bella La Stella

One of Aberdeen’s best loved restaurants has reopened its doors to discerning diners after a major refurbishment.

21st Century Cocktalia... This issue it is time for some unadulterated self-promotion! At the beginning of February, Society Bar & Restaurant launches its new cocktail menu. It has been a long time in the making, but we think it has been well worth it. Our list features 34 drinks, including 10 variations on the much loved Mojito. To celebrate this, I’m going to let you into the secret of one of my favourites on the new list, the Society Espresso Martini: 50ml Patron XO Café Liqueur, 12.5ml baileys, 25ml double cream, 25ml cold espresso coffee (the stronger the better!) Shake all ingredients together and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. The espresso martini has been around for a while in a number of different formats. What makes this version great is the Patron XO Café, a tequila-based coffee liqueur which has incredible depths of flavour. By using this liqueur with the other ingredients, we have managed to create a rich, yet well balanced drink that we think is particularly good as an after dinner drink. Moreover, if you consider that 50ml of this spirit is the equivalent of 4 shots of espresso, it will keep you awake a lot more than the usual vodka and red bull! Chef, Chris Tonner and fiancée, Lynsey Yule have invested more than £20,000 in the new-look bistronomy, La Stella. With a vision to turn it into “the best looking little restaurant in Aberdeen,” Chris has created an intimate ambience through the introduction of dark wood flooring complemented by warming burnt-orange soft furnishings. Accompanying La Stella’s renaissance is an inspired new seasonal ‘Creations’ menu, featuring modern Scottish dishes with an emphasis on seafood, and an educated new wine list. La Stella is engaging with its dining disciples through a revamped website, which includes a discussion forum, recipes, and a photographic library of dishes. Bauhaus Luxurious city centre comfort and joy > wOrds by ALIsON dANIELs Depending on your cultural focus, Bauhaus means an influential German design movement or a dodgy eighties band. Now it has been redefined as Aberdeen’s first boutique hotel. The Bauhaus, on Langstane Place, is an oasis of comfort, excellent service and outstanding facilities in the heart of the city. The purposebuilt hotel offers free wi-fi, work areas and colour co-ordinated design in each of the spacious guest rooms. The walls feature reproductions of Kandinsky and other modern artists and there is a sprinkling of Bauhaus designs, like Rietveld’s chairs, throughout the building. The feel is minimalist luxe - never austere - with style and comfort blending effortlessly to create a uniquely laid-back atmosphere. Each floor has a colour theme, so guests have a choice of blue, yellow, black, grey or red. It’s the antithesis of the faceless, impersonal and anonymous identikit hotels that business people are often stranded in, and it’s ideally located for taking advantage of the city’s entertainment and nightlife. The welcome starts at reception, which features rich, dark, woods and comfy sofas. By lunchtime, the reception area has turned into a bar, which is becoming a popular spot for an afternoon coffee. In the evenings and at weekends, the bar is proving popular with a sophisticated clientele, who appreciate not being deafened or squashed while on a night out. As the Bauhaus’s General Manager, Sylvia Simpson puts it, “We’re ideally placed for business people during the week and leisure visitors at the weekends. Since we’re in the heart of the city, everything is within easy walking distance, though we have such a good restaurant in the hotel – Yatai, the city’s first Japanese restaurant – that some guests feel so at home they don’t really bother to go out. Bauhaus is all about quality, high standards, great food, good design, excellent customer care and service with a smile!” The Bauhaus Hotel, 52-60 Langstane Place, Aberdeen AB11 6EN T: 01224 212122 E: info@thebauhaus.co.uk www.thebauhaus.co.uk 35

THE PRICE IS RIGHT FOR PROPERTY INVESTORS > wOrds by NIKI TENNANT The market is ripe for buy-to-let investors seeking to add below market value properties to their portfolio. That’s the advice of Aberdeen-based prestigious international property company managing director, Steven Reaper. Since he founded Reaper International in August 2008, his business has enjoyed remarkable growth. Reaper International’s collection of houses and apartments in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester are generating keen interest among private and corporate investors. “Due to the current economic climate, the cost of properties within our new build developments has been significantly reduced, with prices down by as much as 40 per cent,” explained Steven, who has noted heightened interest among bulk investors. “While the market in the central belt is robust, the Aberdeen property scene is particularly buoyant and is commanding higher rentals. For investors, therefore, there couldn’t be a more opportune time to buy.” Reaper International recently secured exclusive rights to offer discerning purchasers in the North-east of Scotland seasonal and fractional luxury ownership on the shores of Loch Lomond. The company is offering customers exclusive discounts and benefits when they purchase at The Carrick on the De Vere deluxe resort at Cameron House. The grand mansion has been converted into twelve, luxurious apartments that enjoy magnificent views over the picturesque Loch Lomond. Owners of these deluxe apartments in The Carrick mansion also have the luxury of being able to unwind in the award-winning spa, or enjoy fine cuisine in the stylish Claret Jug Clubhouse. Said Steven: “The Carrick is drawing appeal from companies for the enjoyment of clients and staff, and also from individuals who want to buy into a lifestyle.” As part of the RCI Regency Collection, owners at The Carrick may choose to exchange their weeks for luxury breaks at other five-star destinations worldwide. When appraising the North-east’s most romantic venues for a fairytale wedding The Macdonald Pittodrie House Hotel, close to Aberdeen, must surely stake claim to the sceptre.

Emma will guide the couple around the hotel and estate prior to booking, and ensure that all aspects of the big day are as individual as they are – from drinks on arrival, to the honeymoon departure.

The jewel in the crown of the 2,500-acre Pittodrie estate is its enchanting house, whose turrets salute the commanding Bennachie that presides over the grounds.

Together, a couple can liaise with Emma and Pittodrie House Hotel’s award-winning chefs to construct the ideal menu to be served in the sophisticated ballroom, or more intimate airy Orangery, or wood-panelled Billiard Room.

The grand house dates back to the 1400’s, when it was granted to the Erskines by Robert the Bruce in honour of the family’s allegiance during the Battle of Bannockburn. For couples planning a traditional or civil wedding, it’s the perfect place to make that all-important promise. Although it can comfortably cater for 110 wedding day guests and a further 50 evening guests, discerning general manager, Elaine Maitland, is insistent that the hotel’s small but professional team are highly commited to providing the best service and hospitality. “Couples are guaranteed a very personal service here,” explained Elaine. “Our dedicated wedding co-ordinator, Emma Duncan, will ensure the couple know the name of everyone at Pittodrie House Hotel who’s contributing to the smooth-running of their special day.”

Created using the freshest, seasonal ingredients from the North-east’s natural larder, including produce from the estate’s aromatic walled garden, Pittodrie House Hotel will prepare the perfect culinary package - from a lavish wedding banquet to an informal barbecue in the grounds. For further information about Pittodrie House Hotel’s monthly wedding open days and forthcoming exhibitions/special offers, contact wedding co-ordinator, Emma Duncan directly on 01467 626700. COHABITING? Be prepared! By Ruth Aberdein, Family Law Partner at leading Aberdeen-based firm, Aberdein Considine & Company. “With the number of couples choosing to live together rather than , or prior to, marrying on the increase, it is imperative that those who cohabit consider entering into a legal Cohabitation Agreement to regulate property and financial affairs in the event of separation or death.” “The law in Scotland defines a ‘cohabitant’ as either member of a couple living together “as if they were husband or wife” or “as if they were civil partners.” “Whilst the relevant legislation, being the Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006, does not provide those living together with the same level of rights and protection as married couples, given that prior to the commencement of the Act, cohabitants received very limited legal recognition, the provisions contained in the Act are significant.” “Cohabitation Agreements may be perceived as being clinical and insensitive but they offer a pragmatic and sensible solution to minimising the potential for conflict in the future.” “Similar to Pre-Nuptial Agreements for those about to marry, Cohabitation Agreements can regulate a range of issues, including financial and property matters and in particular, such an Agreement can play a crucial role in recognising unequal contributions towards a purchase price where a couple are buying a property together.” “Undoubtedly, such Agreements can save couples significant and unnecessary distress and money in the future and we, at Aberdein Considine and Company, can provide anyone interested in exploring aspects of the law relating to cohabitation and indeed all other aspects of Family Law, with the expert advice and guidance they require.” For further information, please contact Ruth on 01224 589 700 or email raberdein@acandco.com 40

Toronto may not be the most obvious choice for a break, but Trend readers will feel right at home in Canada’s biggest city. Toronto will appeal to food lovers. Breakfast is a Canadian institution and two blueberry pancakes often turn out to be a five-high stack and come covered with cream. Neighbourhood restaurants offer big portions and great value and you have a duty to experience bacon with maple syrup at least once. If you can face lunch, head for the St. Lawrence Market on Jarvis Street, which boasts an enormous selection of gourmet food stalls. On Saturdays, it houses a Farmer’s Market and a bustling antique market on Sundays. With 104 different nationalities living in Toronto, dinner can be anything you fancy.

Although the city is laid out in a grid pattern and navigation seems simple, the sheer scale of the city can be disorientating. Younge Street, one of the main shopping streets, stretches for over sixteen miles, so take advantage of the decent public transport system. The Eaton Centre hosts 320 shops, but many of the quirky neighbourhood shops hold more interest. Bloor Street is the home of many of the high end designers while Younge has everything from outlet stores to a highly specialised leather goods store. Avoid taking your mother to this one unless you feel you can come up with a satisfactory explanation of a ball-gag. Even the city’s cultural highlights can be combined with shopping - The Bata Shoe Museum has several floors of historical footwear and celebrity shoes while the Museum of Inuit Art has some very moving artefacts. The harbour front and islands provide a restful alternative and a day trip on the Kajama Schooner affords great views of the city skyline, as does the CN tower, provided it’s not a cloudy day. Toronto will prove a rewarding destination.

Her penchant for bright, bold colours hasn’t evaded her since her textile design studies at Gray’s between 1999 and 2002, and she still draws much of her inspiration from Parisian knitwear designer, Sonia Rykiel. Meet Rachel by enlisting for the Robert Gordon Alumni Society workshop for graduates at the start of March. Make a date for dinner... where do you go if you want to broaden your circle of friends and perhaps meet someone special, but you don’t want to hang around in nightclubs or bars? If you like a relaxed atmosphere and appreciate good food then Meeting4dinner may be just the thing.... Meeting 4 Dinner was created over 5 years ago to enable single people to meet similar like minded people in a nice venue where they can relax and socialise with no pressure or expectations on either side. Meeting 4 Dinner is not a dating agency, it is entirely up to members to contact others if they wish to do so. Meeting 4 Dinner meets once a month at various restaurants within the Aberdeen area. The aim is to ensure that there is an equal amount of men and women. The idea is for members to rotate places after each course to give people the opportunity to meet as many people as possible. Venues planned for this year include The Royal China, The Stage Door, 210 Bistro and Maryculter House Hotel (known for their theme evenings). The evening consists of a 3 course meal with drinks included. For newcomers to Meeting 4 Dinner, I ensure that they are met on arrival and introduce them to other members to help put them at ease. The dinners tend to be very relaxed and judging by the feedback I have 56

received, have proved to be an enjoyable experience for all concerned. Friendships have been made and some have even found that someone special! Members come from all backgrounds, ranging in the age bracket of mid thirties to sixty years old. Meeting 4 Dinner is run out of office hours and is not profit focused. There is no joining fee. “In 2010, we’ll be adding more walks to our events programme. We did a couple last year and they have been very popular, but we make sure they’re not too strenuous!” adds Mary.

Anyone interested in joining Meeting for Dinner can contact Mary on 07751 133198 or info@meeting4dinner.co.uk. www.meeting4dinner.co.uk contains details of upcoming events.

Dear Trend

Just wanted to say thanks for such a great mag! My husband has requested that it lives in our loo so that he can make sure he gets to read it in peace and quiet. Having lived in Aberdeen for ten years now we have definitly got in a rut and end up going to the same old places so it was great to pick up Trend and find out a host of new and inspiring places to experience! Thanks.

Just to prove that the age of romance isn’t dead, I wanted to say thanks to you and to Society Bar and Restaurant. As a surprise Christmas present, I booked a long weekend for my partner and me in Paris and was racking my brains trying to think of a romantic way of breaking the news. When flicking through Trend in my local, I spotted a recipe for a cocktail involving St Germain elderflower liqueur, which I didn’t know existed. Stoke of genius! As the hotel I’d booked was in the St Germain district of Paris, I conjured up the cocktail and served it on a tray along with the tickets and itinerary. Thanks for the inspiration, which earned me mega brownie points!

Jack the lad Scottish miner’s son, Jack Vettriano is probably the world’s most popular artist, feted for his atmospheric, figurative, oils. Alison Daniels caught up with him at Malmaison... If there was a Turner Prize for flirting, Jack Vettriano would be in with a decent shot. Think of Leonard Cohen equipped with a paintbrush, a dirty laugh and a dollop of Leslie Phillips’ roguish charm and you’d end up with Jack Vettriano. “I was very frustrated as an artist until I realised one day that my subject had been in front of me all the time – my desire for, and adoration of, women. Luckily for me, it’s a theme most people can identify with and the public seemed to love my work”, Vettriano smiles. “It takes me three days, on average, to produce a full sized picture. I do work very long hours though! The problem with creativity is that it tends to creep up on you in the night. I can have gone to bed and I’ll just be lying there, thinking about a painting, till I have to get up and do a few hours more work before heading back to bed for a couple of hours sleep. I just keep at it till I’ve got it right.” His new paintings, featuring Milanese trams and a century old yacht will be showing at his new exhibition, Days of Wine and Roses, opening in Kirkcaldy on March 27th before heading to London and Milan. He’s keen to reassure me that this sudden interest in vintage transport doesn’t mean his passion for the erotic is on the wane. “I am inspired by beautiful things and the yacht and trams are just gorgeous. What I like about them is that I was able to combine my passions!” Jack’s work is available at www.jackvettriano.com 62

Cast of the Capital

Cast of the Capital bassist Steve Morris can remember the first time he realised he wanted to be in a band. “It was at a Biffy Clyro gig in 2005,” he recalls. “I was still buzzing so much the next day that my brother Matt and I bought guitars and started learning how to play their songs immediately.” They were later joined by Jamie Watt and Ally Naylor on guitar and drums, with Matt as singer/guitarist. And they made a racket.

Cab For Cutie’ changed everything. It had a huge impact on our songwriting.” Now Cast of the Capital have released their first EP, Rotten Kids and Haversacks on Kittywake records. Recorded with respected Scottish indie producer Robin Sutherland, it’s an excellent collection of fresh, post-grunge guitar pop which, although immediately hooky, is far from disposable thanks to intelligent arrangements and Matt’s seemingly effortless, idiosyncratic singing style.

“When we started, we still didn’t really know how to play,” smiles Matt, “but over time we started to get better..”

In a playlist, they’d sit well somewhere between Band of Horses, Death Cab For Cutie, Snow Patrol, Frightened Rabbit and Idlewild.

During these early years, the band become heavily influenced by the American indie/rock scene. Matt explains, “For us, discovering ‘Death

In 2009, after regular touring and successful appearances at the Go North and Rockness festivals, they were invited to play a live acoustic set for Radio

Such accolades were proved well earned at a November headline slot at Snafu’s excellent Thursday night band showcase The Dirty Hearts Club. Local audiences will next have a chance to see Cast of the Capital on Feb 6th at the Beach Ballroom, then Snafu on March 11th. A springtime UK tour will be announced soon. The last word with...

In another life, Frank Lefevre would love to have been a Hoagy Carmichael, writing popular songs and ensuring his immortality. As it is, the 75-year-old Peter Pan of the Aberdeen legal fraternity has made a pretty good fist of life in the law. Today, he is still at the helm of his pioneering but controversial no-win, no-fee firm Quantum Claims, founded in 1988 in Aberdeen but now also in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness. “We also maintain our core personal injury business through Lefevre Litigation,” says Frank, who specialises in employment law. Earlier in his career, he made a formidable adversary in court, whether in criminal cases or third-party claims.

He and his wife, Hazel, have three children, Paul, Tracey and Julie, all of whom are in the family business in various capacities. But that’s not all. Yes, Frank has owned the bar-diner Dizzys for 40 years and the premises in Aberdeen’s Carden Place below his offices have recently reopened after being flooded last November. Keeping a watchful eye on the business is Hazel’s sister, Carol Munro, and her chef husband David. Dizzys? Yes, it is named after a 19th century British prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli, nicknamed Dizzy, and, closer to Frank’s heart, American jazzman Dizzy Gillespie. Cue the music. Frank acquired his love of it from his parents.

Hairdresser dad Charles played clarinet and viola while mum, the former Edith Hartley, was a pianist. The duo were the star turn 80 years ago at the St Katherine’s Club in Aberdeen, now the Lemon Tree arts venue. “I have been writing songs for 50 years,” says Frank who finally achieved his ambition of getting his compositions recorded by 12 different singers for a CD entitled Timeless Allsorts. It has raised £18,000 so far for his charity, the Needy Kids Trust Fund. Want one? pop into dizzys with a fiver and it’s yours.
