Editors’ etchings While there’s a lot to be said for escaping it all and jetting off to the sun, this issue of Trend is a true showcase of the many delights to be discovered here on our own shores. Although they may look like they could have been taken from a Mediterranean holiday brochure, the inky blue skies and the golden sands in our amazing fashion spreads were shot only a few miles from Aberdeen. If you fancy a change of scenery in another coastal location, enter our competition for a chance to win an overnight stay at the luxurious five star Westin Turnberry resort, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views out to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and the Irish Sea. This issue of Trend also sees us visiting the idyllic Kinnaird Estate set in woodland in the Tay Valley, where we found tranquillity and luxury within its intimate grand country house. If a city break is more up your street, flick through to page 34 for a chance to win return Eastern Airways flights from Aberdeen to the shopping Mecca of Leeds and two nights at the luxurious Radisson SAS hotel. A year’s free hairdressing at top salon TONY&GUY is also up for grabs. As ever, this issue is packed with news from the North-east’s own vibrant retail scene, and there’s plenty of food snippets to whet the appetite of discerning diners. Until the August issue, enjoy Trend. Best wishes, Niki Tennant Editor & Pauline Fraser Assistant Editor

Dear readers, Can you believe this is already Issue 5 of Trend, and ‘our baby’ is growing and blossoming beyond our wildest expectations. We think we have found a winning formula with Trend and the positive feedback we receive from you, our readers, and from our advertisers and distributors reiterates this with each and every issue.

Never being ones to rest on our laurels, we felt confident enough to buck the Trend with this issue. And don't we have the WOW! factor in the shape of our cover boy, Ross Whyte!
“It would have to be someone I’d feel totally relaxed with, so I’d have to choose my best friend. If I could choose anywhere in the world, I’d go for Barbados.”
Since day one, we’ve taken every opportunity to roll up our sleeves and become involved in the exciting editorial production of Trend. It was a cold, blustery April day on Balmedie beach when we filmed our sensational beachwear fashion shots. Wrapped in thermals and Ugg boots and armed with flasks of tea, we looked on as our plucky models peeled off their layers to parade beachwear on a breathtaking coastal location that has in the last year received its well deserved share of worldwide exposure. We had nothing but admiration for their professionalism and wasn't it worth it?

“It would have to be the gorgeous Johnny Depp. We’d go to the Caribbean together and he could show me the sights!”

“I’d surprise my boyfriend by sailing us out to an uncharted island. Sounds like heaven!”

Tan-tastic > WORDS BY FIONA SMITH
Faking it tried and tested. There are loads of fake tans on the market but which ones should you be grabbing off the shelf? Well, here is a quick guide to the best products for sun-kissed skin.
L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Airbrush-Effect Self-Tanning Dry Mist for Body (£9.98) Texture Cooling mist. Application Spray claiming to give even colour without rubbing in. Result Spraying directly onto the body gave patchy results. Best to spray on the hand and apply like body lotion. Smell Lightly fragranced, without a noticeable smell. Rating 1/5 Clinique Body Quick Bronze (£15) Texture Lightweight gel Application Easy application as the gel is brown, so you can see any missed bits. Result A natural even colour that lasts up to 2 days. Smell Really strong! I wouldn’t recommend going out in public while it’s developing. Rating 3/5

> WORDS BY DAWN PATERSON AT THE HOUSE
And the winners are. . . St Tropez Everyday Body (£12.95) Texture Quite a thick lotion. Application Easy - just like a body lotion and dries fairly quickly. Summer skin tonics
After months of being hidden under layers of clothing it’s likely your whole body is in need of an invigorating boost before you bare all. So let’s start with the basics. If you need a quick fix to slough off all that dull, dry skin then I would suggest a 20 minute Salt and Oil Body Scrub. This nourishing body exfoliation uses sea salts and skin softening oils which will leave you tingling, as well as smooth and toned all over.

If your winter skin is in need of a major overhaul then a body wrap will work wonders. If you’re heading off to the sun then the Skin Hydrator Body Wrap will protect and prepare your skin from head-to-toe. The treatment begins with lymphatic skin brushing and full exfoliation before your skin is treated with marine mud, ESPA skin toning oils and nourishing body cream. This treatment is also a great skin booster after exposure to the sun. To top it all off prepare your tootsies with a Foot and Nail treatment and a luxury pedicure. For a healthy, natural glow we’ve also just introduced one of the most up-to-date St Tropez spray tans which can be accurately applied in just ten minutes! An initial spray is £30 with a top-up four to seven days later for £15. After this you will be the most gorgeous sun-kissed goddess in the North-east. Best foot forward this summer > WORDS BY JULIE LILLIE
With the arrival of summer, we girls have gone to great lengths to have our hair highlighted, have a manicure, and even have our bits waxed in preparation for the season when we bare all. However, have we given any thought to our poor feet that have been trussed up in boots and sturdy shoes all winter? The following tips will help you achieve a well turned heel to last all summer long. Nail trimming - keep nails short, following the natural shape of the nail, finishing off by filing the nail with a metal file or an emery board. This will keep sharp edges at bay preventing ingrown nails, and gives a neat finish to the nail. If you are using a varnish, check the nails for chips and cracks and touch them up, or alternatively, remove the varnish and start again. Hard Skin – this is most commonly found around the heels and on the ball of the foot, which - as well as looking unsightly - can cause pain. It should be removed by a professional using a scalpel. It can then be kept at bay by using a foot file on a dry foot every week. Finally, feet (like hands) really benefit from regular application of cream morning and night, to keep skin soft and supple all summer. My personal favourites are; the Body Shop peppermint foot lotion, L’Occitane lavender foot cream, E45 foot and heel cream, and CCS cream available from Boots. When warmly greeted at the reception area of Queens Cross Dental practice in Aberdeen’s commercial district, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’ve strolled into the foyer of a fashionable boutique hotel. > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
Queens Cross Dental has come a long way since principal dentist Andrew Scott (BDS BMSc DPDS) established it exactly four years ago with just one surgery. The latest ambitious expansion and refurbishment project on the practice’s upper floor, completed at the end of last year, brought the number of surgeries to six, and the practice now boasts six dentists and two hygienists. There’s no question that Queens Cross Dental has significantly improved the provision of dentistry expertise in the city. But if the very thought of a dental appointment sets your teeth on edge, think again. All six dentists subscribe to the Queens Cross Dental culture of providing high quality dentistry in a relaxed and contemporary atmosphere, designed for maximum comfort. Complimentary hot drinks and chilled water are always on tap, each surgery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, 22

The First Group, headquartered in Aberdeen, launched the inaugural 120K event last year as a way of engaging and rewarding staff and passengers, while raising money for Save the Children. The 2007 challenge – which raised more than £30,000 - attracted 500 participants, including celebrities such as model and athlete Nell McAndrew, rugby star Keiran Bracken, record breaking Liz McColgan and gold medallist Sonia O’Sullivan. Nearly 600 sporting enthusiasts have already signed up for this year’s event on September 13, and organisers Paul Moore and Niall Dowds of First Group are confident they will comfortably enlist the support of 1000 participants. Named after what is arguably the world’s most fascinating folk lore, the First Monster Loch Ness team challenge gets under starter’s orders in Inverness and follows a route along the western side of the loch and the Great Glen Way forestry track. “The event taps into people’s love of sport
and the great outdoors,” explained First communications director, Paul who - along with group public relations manager Niall recently completed a dry run of the course in nine hours. “It’s all about using the spirit of sport and Scotland’s proud heritage to connect with employees and passengers and raise money for a good cause.” A relay event for teams of four, the course consists of eight legs - four running and four cycling. A fleet of First buses will move around the course, transporting participants between transition points. This summer also sees the launch of Mini Monster duathlon events in Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, St Albans and Bristol, aimed at families. David Lloyd Leisure and tennis: the perfect match > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
There could be no greater endorsement for David Lloyd health and fitness club’s All Stars programme than that from Scotland’s home grown tennis sensation, Andy Murray. The programme, for three to 12-year-olds, is unique to David Lloyd Leisure. Andy was involved in the design of the programme and has taken a lot of drills and games that he used in his early years on court with his mum and mentor, Judy. These exercises are designed to ensure each child has every opportunity to maximise their potential and most importantly have fun whilst learning all about the game. “There’s a lot of potential among the young players here in Aberdeen,” explained Mark Malcolm, who is in charge of David Lloyd’s junior programme at the city club. “If children start playing by the age seven, there’s a fair chance we could produce a good player who could go on to represent the North of Scotland in mini county events.” Tennis all stars also helps develop your child’s social and physical skills. The programme also contains elements that promote teamwork, fair play and sportsmanship. By taking part in Tennis All Stars, your child could follow in Andy Murray's footsteps and find out just how much fun playing tennis can be! Jan Leiper provides advanced aesthetic skin treatments to clients, of all ages, in both professional and confidential surroundings, to help them achieve their desired facial rejuvenation experience. Although Jan offers many injectable options her new aesthetic treatment for facial volume loss is Sculptra™. Why Sculptra™? In time your skin can lose its fullness and youthful appearance, this is a direct result of the ageing process. Skin can become thinner and lose elasticity causing wrinkles and deep lines to appear. Fat tissue which maintains the fullness of your face also depletes resulting in a thinner, narrow shape which can make you look older than your years. Sculptra™ is injected into the skin and it is designed for use in a number of areas on your face. It works by stimulating the build up of your body’s own collagen and can help by smoothing deep lines and wrinkles and also by returning lost volume to give you a natural-looking fuller face. Sculptra™ has a discreet approach which allows a gradual effect to occur over 2 to 3 treatments resulting in plumper facial tissue after 6 weeks with no need for pre-allergy testing. Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra™ can last for more than 3 years. For a free consultation please call Jan. Innocent Aesthetics Ltd is available at Kirkwood Fyfe Aesthetics, Aberdeen, and West With Style, Westhill. Contact Jan on 07734889652 info@innocentaesthetics.co.uk www.innocentaesthetics.co.uk 25

Who is your favourite celebrity chef and why? Don't have one. Don't have time to watch TV! What in your career has made you most proud? Opening the restaurant and developing it to where it is right now. What was your biggest kitchen disaster? I have a temperamental dishwashing machine that from time to time decides to die on me during service.
Anne Campbell chef and proprietor, La Stella, 28 Adelphi, Aberdeen Tel 01224 211414
What is your signature dish? Don't have one, but I guess my ďŹ sh specials are what I'm really known for - although my Aberdeen Angus ďŹ llet steak also has a reputation. If you weren't a chef, what would you be? Saxophonist.
What is your favourite comfort food? Soup. For whom would you most like to cook and what would you serve? Singer Boz Scaggs, and anything - as long as he brings his guitar and some wine from his vineyard. Name your favourite restaurant on the planet and why? Caruso in Sorrento. Not the best food you'll ever eat, but the atmosphere and service are fantastic. It also helps that it's in Sorrento - one of my favourite places. What is the Scottish culinary scene's biggest Achilles heel? Lack of commitment to consistent quality and value for money.
Langoustine, Tiger Prawns & Green Shell Mussels Ingredients (per portion) 4 langoustines 4 tiger prawns 5 green shell mussels Lots of garlic Shallot Tarragon Parmesan Brandy Vanilla Liqueur Butter

This is a simple, but very rich dish which is quick to prepare. The quantities are really to taste, so experiment. Method 1. Prepare the seafood.Roast the langoustines in the oven with butter, cream and brandy for about 5 minutes. 2. Pan fry the prawns and mussels in shallots, cream, tarragon, garlic, brandy and parmesan. 4. Add the roasted langoustines and finish with more brandy and a dash of vanilla liqueur.

Dinner Review The clue as to the focus of the restaurant is in the name! Warm desert colours and subtle lighting give a good feel to the space; there is plenty of room between tables so you don’t feel that you are intruding on other diners' conversations. The restaurant quickly filled up on our Thursday night visit. Service remained attentive throughout and we were especially impressed with the dedicated wine steward who was very knowledgeable and helpful in recommending wines from an interesting and well thought out list. A glass of fragrant, ripe, citrus and brioche inspired Champagne Maillart Brut NV helped us to decide on the starters. Next to me an intensely flavoured lobster bisque (£7.50) received plenty of praise and across the table, a smooth chicken Liver parfait was well matched with a red onion and plum marmalade (£5.75).

Apart from a generously proportioned grilled swordfish with mango and chilli salsa and lime butter (£16.50), it was Surf and Turf all round (£30.00). The local Scottish beef is aged for a minimum of 28 days. The fillet steak was sliced, served with a jus and was full flavoured and tender, the accompanying half lobster simply grilled with lemon and parsley butter. It was a real treat.
A rich, full-on, exotically fruity Pinot Gris from Gustave Lorentz, Alsace was a winning combination (£23.00). Its intensity and off-dry finish complemented the parfait, seafood, the chilli and the sweeter elements of our dishes.
I tend to do cheese instead of pudding but when faced with a dessert menu that listed all my favourite puddings, I felt that it was right to order for everyone and then insist on sharing! Along came our wine man with a chill bucket of dessert wines and tawny port. His recommendations to go with each of our chosen desserts were spot on. The desserts have a retro feel to them and a lemon meringue pie served warm with the crispest of pastry was a star (£5.95). We also enjoyed crème brulee (£5.95) and baked alaska (£5.95). A selection of Scottish cheeses (£6.95) followed by coffee finished off a very enjoyable evening.
Our main courses arrived almost too quickly. A delicious red fruit, spice and raisin driven Chateau Musar 2000 from the Lebanon was decanted for us (£36.00).

My lobster and crab cakes were crisp with plenty of shell fish and the accompanying chilli jam had a real kick (£8.50). As there were three, I successfully bartered one for one of my friend's king scallops which were plump and perfectly seared set a top a lobster mousse (£9.50).

Lunch Review Space and light greet you as you step into the Foyer at HMT. Coffee, cake and sandwiches are available downstairs and upstairs the restaurant offers views over Union Terrace gardens. Sleek design, red walls and wood bring warmth into the space.
With plenty of red fruit it was just dry with a savoury edge.
The lunch time menu offers lighter options such as soup, this day’s choice being a warming, creamy root vegetable one and bruschetta. The menus change every few weeks and on our visit the new one was just being rolled out.
Luckily, my dining companions like to share so I was also able to sample a comforting, moreish creamy pasta dish with peas and smoked haddock (£7.95) and a tasty twist on goats’ cheese salad. The melting goats’ cheese was served on top a chickpea and mint cous cous and contrasted well with the sweetness of beetroot. (£7.95)
To help ponder our choices, we munched on a good selection of warm organic bread with olive oil and some top notch olives (£3.50) The wine list is well priced and has some interesting choices with five available by the glass. We went for the sole rosé on the list - Pleno Garnacha 2006 (£14.50) from Navarra in Spain.
Main courses arrived and were generous in size. My cajun spiced plaice fillets were crisply fried and perfectly cooked and came with a robust chorizo, tomato and broad bean gumbo with a garlic aioli. (£8.95)
With imaginative well priced pre-theatre and a la carte menus, an evening visit to the foyer @HMT is definitely on the cards. His Majesty’s Theatre, Rosemount Viaduct Aberdeen AB25 1GL Tel 01224337677 www.foyerrestaurant.com 33

Scotland's Michelin starred chef Martin Wishart has opened his Cook School in Edinburgh’s fashionable Leith district. He chatted to Trend’s Alison Daniels. How did you first get into cooking and what made you decide to become a chef? At home we ate a lot of good Scottish dishes, like mince and tatties, stews and soups, and spaghetti bolognaise was about as exotic as it got. I started a catering course when I was 15, and discovered I loved the teamwork and working with my hands and just got hooked. Where did you start out and when did you open your own restaurant? I went to the Caledonian from college, then to Australia for a year, then to Cameron House. I travelled through France for a few months for work experience in various restaurants, ran out of cash and came back to work for Nick Nairn, then spent a year at Le Gavroche. After that it was Canada, the US and then stints with John Burton-Race, Marco Pierre White and Albert Roux. I returned to Edinburgh to open the Brasserie in the Balmoral in 1996 then opened my own restaurant in 1999.

What do you think of the cult of the celebrity chef? I think it’s great that they’ve helped people become more aware of produce and seasonal cooking, but they’ve also made things a bit misleading for young chefs coming into the trade. They don’t see the long hours and hard work, just the glamour, and don’t always understand what’s needed to become successful. Who does the cooking at home? My wife Cecile does most of it. She’s French but was born in Mexico, so we eat a lot of simple dishes, fish, salads and Mexican food with things like the flour for tortillas being brought over by family and friends.
What would your desert island meal be? I’d go for something really simple like some superb Serrano ham, good olives, crusty brown bread and a nice rioja – oh and some tattie soup from Shetland. What’s your guilty pleasure? In the restaurant, I quite like to grab a roll, fill it with boiled potatoes and vinegar. It’s the closest I can get to a chip buttie! Why did you decided to set up the cookery school? We were already doing a private dining service where we’d cook for dinner parties in people’s homes. Bruce (head chef at the Cook School) and I really enjoy working with the public and I had given lessons in New York and Canada, so we decided to do this rather than open a second restaurant. We also use the kitchens here to explore new ideas for the restaurant. How’s it going, so far? We only opened the Cook School at the end of January, but it has been going incredibly well so far. We pride ourselves on offering individual attention and since most classes are eight people or less with two chefs, it’s a great relaxed environment. The dishes are similar to those we offer in the restaurant, but slightly simplified for home cooking and we make the most of fresh local ingredients and seasonal produce. MY BIG BREAK
ADVERTORIAL
Changing Places By Gary Walker, St. James’s Place Wealth Management
The Summer Property Market in Aberdeen-Realism returns An insight by Kevin Davison, principal partner at K.W.A.D Well now, what are the prospects going to be like for buyers and sellers during this period? Well I believe that a sense of realism has finally arrived and although it’s been a long time coming its extremely welcome just now.
St. James’s Place Partner Gary Walker has appointed two new key members to his Aberdeen-based team to enhance client services.
My big break
It’s Friday afternoon and the thoughts of most of the Aberdeen business community are turning to which West End waterhole to head to first, but for city solicitor Julie Rowson, the day is far from over. > WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER
Julie Rowson, managing director of Rowson and Associates, made her big break for herself in early 2007. Having qualified as a solicitor in 1999 after achieving a law degree from Aberdeen University and an honours degree in Business Studies from The Robert Gordon University, Julie began her legal career in the field of conveyancing and criminal law. “I made the decision to specialise in property law in 2001 and have never looked back. With property you are helping people to make a real difference to their lives and I found it a rewarding experience,” Julie explained. 36
A strong factor in the decision to set up her own practice was that she wanted to be able to do things differently and the only way to accomplish that was to become her own boss. Julie said: “Once I had decided to make the break and set up on my own everything seemed to fall into place. I secured West End premises, employed two members of staff and Rowson & Associates was born. “Because we are a small team, we are able to develop a more personal relationship with our clients. People naturally attach a lot of emotion to their homes and it can be a very stressful time for clients when they are
Paddy Gopala will add to Gary’s portfolio of services by providing advice and guidance on the entire range of commercial lending services, including residential mortgages and business finance. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in banking and commercial finance, having been operations manager at HSBC prior to running his own commercial finance consultancy. selling and purchasing properties, however we are there to help our clients in every way possible, which makes coming to work in the morning extremely rewarding.” Part and parcel of life as a property specialist is the fact that most transactions complete on a Friday. “Most of the work goes very smoothly but you have to be prepared for the last minute niggles which are outwith your control. I really enjoy my work and I know I’m helping clients move into their dream homes, so it’s worth all the hard work which is involved.’’ At a little over a year old, Rowson & Associates has extended into new office premises, appointed a second solicitor and the company has exceeded all financial targets. Debbie Gibson has also joined the team to assist with practice management and business development. She has worked at Lloyds TSB for the past 15 years after leaving university, latterly in role of Business Development Manager in Business Banking. Debbie will manage the day to day running of the practice while seeking to grow the business through pro-actively engaging with her existing contacts and the business community in Aberdeen. The appointments come as the organisation moves into larger offices in the city’s Queen’s Road. They join Heather Buchan who has worked with Gary for two years and has 10 years’ experience in the financial services industry. Gary Walker said: “Paddy and Debbie’s experience will enhance our existing team and will be of great benefit to our clients. Working together we can provide our existing and future clients with a complete range of personal and business financial services, both lending and investment related.” Gary Walker is a Partner of the St. James's Place Wealth Management, which is a provider of a wide range of quality financial services. Over the last couple of months there has been a marked slowdown in activity in the Aberdeen property market. This is down, in no small part, to the credit crunch with the withdrawal of 100% loans which has in turn meant that first time buyers have struggled to get a property. Those selling to the first time buyers market should by now have become a little more realistic in what they are looking for by way of a sale price, or else they may find that their properties continue to sit unsold. This sense of realism should get the property market going again and sellers on their way up the ladder and first time buyers moved into a new property where before sellers were holding out for prices they’d heard had been achieved next door last year. The message just now then is to make sure you speak to a property expert before making your next move in or around Aberdeen, as what’s happening elsewhere in the UK and globally is having an effect everywhere, no matter how much of a micro economy we think we live in here in Aberdeen. For further information about buying, selling or renting in Aberdeen call Kevin Davidson on 01224 656330.

thinking of a career in creative media? The only place to go is London – right? Wrong! The media industry is thriving right here in the North East of Scotland. AVC Media Enterprises is one organisation that has built its reputation training and developing award winning media talent, working on productions worldwide from its Aberdeen headquarters. With opportunities available for producers and editors to multimedia designers and cameramen, the recruitment process should be fairly straight forward. However, production manager Jamie Baikie explains that experienced professionals and those new to the industry should be more aware of the buzzing media industry in the North-east. “AVC has built a solid reputation in the UK media industry, an IVCA gold award winner, we have been recognised as the top corporate production house outside London by Televisual.” “The media industry in Aberdeen is just as sexy as the central belt and London. We have some of the best facilities in the country, and innovative training programmes that offer endless opportunity. It’s not all about qualifications either. Experience helps but our training and development initiatives provide theory, practice and visible results.” Currently filming in Brazil and working with Middle East media giant Al Jazeera in Doha, there is no doubt that AVC Media Enterprises has a pedigree to be proud of. Simpson & Marwick recently unveiled its new Aberdeen Property Shop at 4 Alford Place – a bright, contemporary and welcoming space which bears all the hallmarks of the firm’s commitment to providing a quality service. Crowned Residential Property Team of the Year 2008 in the recent Scottish Law Awards, Simpson & Marwick has introduced their bespoke service to the Aberdeen market by attracting leading residential property solicitor, Dave Geddie, and his expert team. Dave, who is a Board member at Aberdeen Solicitors’ Property Centre (ASPC) transferred his whole team of experienced solicitors and support staff from Paull & Williamsons at the end of last year. “The way in which we deal with transactions from start to finish is really quite different,” explained Dave, who brings with him 22 years’ experience in the North-east residential property scene. “I am delighted that the house buying and selling public in Aberdeen seems to have embraced our fresh new approach.”
The stylish new Property Shop, with its clean lines and airy appeal embraces new technology and demonstrates what clients can expect from the Simpson & Marwick brand. Two in-store screens showcase all stock at all times – from one-bedroom flats to stately homes. The shop, which provides full estate agency and conveyancing services also has dedicated self-surf areas, displaying the firm’s own stock via their website, aberdeenprimeproperty.com as well as providing access to ASPC’s website. All properties are given the five star treatment with carefully prepared glossy brochures. Prospective sellers are invited to contact Simpson & Marwick who will arrange a free, without obligation valuation and fee quotation. Would-be buyers are offered a free initial interview. The Ishoka experience starts here
By Karen McKimmie
> WORDS BY DAVID MACKIE Ishoka, Aberdeen’s prestigious hair salon, located within a townhouse on Albyn Terrace, has recently undergone a transformation with the refurbishment of its reception. Having hopefully inspired you over the last few issues, you’ve just finished pouring over every glossy magazine and searching the web and found the perfect look for your room. Now, before you start stripping the walls – STOP – and think lighting.
Director, Malcolm MacNeil, who has masterminded this project along with the invaluable expertise of Karen McKimmie, proprietor of Ambiance Interior Design, worked to achieve a stylish and elegant setting befitting of Ishoka’s enviable reputation.
Lighting is one of the most powerful elements of interior design and has the versatility to transform a space and create different moods in different rooms. Clever lighting can give richness and depth to any living or working space. The type of lighting that you use should be considered at planning stage and not when the walls are papered and the floor laid and it’s too late to wire. Your choice of materials and textures will also play with the natural and artificial lighting in the space. Pale colours reflect light and dark colours absorb light and form the mood.
The brief was inspired by the sumptuous decor reminiscent of a boutique hotel. Together, they strived to make the reception an area where clients would wish to linger over coffee before going upstairs to their appointment. The decoration uses a sophisticated palette of greys and rich purples. The juxtaposition of carefully chosen textures also played a vital role in the scheme’s success. However, it’s the quality of the beautiful French wallpaper and the opulence of the purple silk curtains that take precedence and make it a truly indulgent space for clients to spend time in and enjoy. Through the redecoration of the reception, which is the first stage in a refurbishment of the salon as a whole, they have created an environment in which clients can indulge in luxurious relaxation in elegant surroundings that reflect Ishoka’s ethos for excellence in design. 42
Many of the fabulous interiors pictured in the magazines use layered lighting – that is using a combination of the following: Ambient lighting – giving a general good level of brightness for everyday use Feature lighting – highlighting objects or features in the room eg. curtains or a sculpture task lighting – designed to provide strong localised light for specific tasks eg. reading or cooking
© Graham Burkhill Photography
There’s an ever increasing choice of fittings with which to experiment and create exciting effects – downlighters, uplighters, wall and floorwashers, flexible strip lighting and an amazing range of decorative chandeliers, shades and lamps. Even if you are restricted in overhauling your wiring, install a dimmer. So, before you spend a small fortune creating your dream home, think atmosphere – think light! A fine house in a fine land > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
When I was s a student working in hotels in the Rockies, a kindly Canadian once remarked: “There are only two types of people in this world – the Scots, and those who wish they were Scots.” Twenty years on, I experienced Kinnaird. Only then did I truly appreciate how privileged I am to call this home. The 7,000 acre Kinnaird Estate is located on the lush, wooded side of the Tay Valley, north of Perth. We were warmly welcomed at the steps of the grand house and shown to the Kincraigie Room with its living fire and bunched fragrant spring flowers. It’s one of only eight majestic rooms and sole suite in this intimate Scottish home, through whose windows to God’s world we caught a rare view of a red squirrel darting through his trees. It’s no wonder its owner, Mrs Constance Cluett Ward, shies from calling this rare retreat a hotel, even though it has rightful pride of place in the Relais & Chateaux 2008 collection of the world’s finest restaurants and hotels.
Concierge and outdoor butler, Alastair Cowe, was itching to share with us his plethora of knowledge about the house’s proud heritage, dating back to the early 1600s – with its loving family photographs of the Windsors, the Wards and the Rockefellers. Dinner was exquisite, service impeccable – and at a perfect pace: West coast scallop with green and white asparagus from the estate’s garden, lobster presse, roasted suckling pig and fennel fondant turbot roasted on the bone – and a cheese trolley which warranted its own red carpet on its journey to our table. After a heavenly breakfast of exotic fresh fruit, irresistible smoked bacon and a poached egg done to perfection, we met the lovely Jimmy Tritton – head ghillie of 25 years and longest serving employee on the Kinnaird estate. He drove us to the Lower Kinnaird Beat, where – on the sunniest day of spring he patiently taught me how to spin cast and shared with my partner, Norman, and me,
his infectious tales about encounters on the estate’s three hill lochs. What a gentleman. You should have seen the one that got away… The Kinnaird Midweek Summer Escape (1 June to 31 July) Midweek 2 and 3 night stays include dinner and full Scottish breakfast for two guests sharing a room. Prices start from £595 for 2 nights and £780 for 3 nights. To make a booking visit www.kinnairdestate.com or call 01796 482 440

> WORDS BY DAPHNE Embarking on my day out in Banchory, gateway to Royal Deeside, my first stop was Orvis, on the corner of Bridge Street, which has an extensive collection of menswear and womenswear, everything for the angler, and even a limited selection of touristy foods. Then it was on to Aitkens Jeweller, owned by Fran and Bill Aitken. Browsing in the window, they had necklaces and matching bracelets strung together in amazingly bright colours. On stepping inside, the 48
handbags were fantastic, many in bright shades of red. Prices for the brightly coloured jewellery didn’t break the bank either, at a reasonable £50 for the necklace and £20 for the matching bracelet. I then stopped for a coffee in the Shieling Restaurant and gift shop. The Shieling is owned by Dave Foster whose team provides great service and sumptuous coffee and cakes. There’s also a choice of superb homemade soup and lunchtime treats.
If you venture to Banchory on a sunny day and fancy an ice cream, look no further than our next stop – Continental Creams, owned by Chris and Linda. They serve Mackies Ice Cream from both the shop and hatch which looks onto Dee Street and always hosts an eager queue. They boast about their large selection of old fashioned sweetie jars. The main attraction for me though, is the choice of chocolates – handmade and the lovely Lindt chocolate. Delicious!
Duncans of Banchory is a real treasure trove, with ladies and gents clothing, furniture, crystal, pictures, carpets and rugs – even corsets! Arriving in the High, we dropped into Hays Flowers where Jill Ritchie and her staff always meet you with a cheery smile and oblige with innovative designs for every occasion. Next stop was the Douglas Hotel where we were greeted by the owner and directed through to the lounge
and balcony area: The perfect venue for a crisp glass of wine on a warm evening. The menu includes specialities such as mussels in garlic and cream sauce, veal marsala, venison sausages with herb mashed potatoes and grilled salmon to order. After a sumptuous lunch, we called into Riah Hair Design, owned by Julie Sangster. The shop was buzzing and there was an abundance of evidence on the walls highlighting Julie’s speciality: bridal work. She’s even been
featured in Hello magazine and works alongside her husband’s business, Deeside Photographic’s. A final must, while in Banchory is a visit to Raemoir Garden Centre. As the seasons change they have everything you will ever want for the garden – and a fantastic place to go if you are looking for an unusual gift. Rarely will you see the restaurant without a queue at the door. Visit Banchory for a great day out. I had fun. You will too. 49

Enchanting Aberdeen street scenes have become something of a trademark for local young artist Mary Butterworth. The 27-year-old’s stunning paintings of North-east locations has won her much praise and popularity as a blossoming talent.
Painting mostly in acrylic, she captures the hypnotic and magical qualities of light, particularly in her night scenes. Mary, who is originally from Glen Muick, near Ballater, has had no formal training in art but her father, renowned North-east artist Howard Butterworth, has been her teacher from a very young age. She said: “Mostly I remember Dad painting and he would always give me paints to use so I would paint alongside him all the time. As soon as I could hold a brush I started dabbling in painting but abstract is how I would have described them! I would always look at Dad’s work and think that I wanted to be as good as him. But now we do different things as I’m more into the city, people, lights and more photography based works.” Mary captures her scenes first on camera and laughs about walking the streets of the city late at night in all weathers in search of something that grabs her interest and imagination. She said: “Each night is different in Aberdeen – you can have darkness with twinkling light, red skies, haar – each 50
location can be different every night and something can just stand out and make you stop.” Back in her Aberdeen studio she then creates her paintings from the still photograph, aiming to capture the moment with a touch of emotional drama and movement in the lights to bring the painting to life. Mary continued: “I’ve been surprised by the popularity of my work. I haven’t seen anyone else paint Aberdeen like that and I’m glad that people like them. The first one I tried was an experiment and then it sold really quickly at a city gallery.” At an exhibition last year every one of her paintings sold out – she currently has 10 commissions and five other buyers awaiting her work.
MUSIC
Mary has exhibited and sold her paintings successfully since 1997, and has had a continuous display at The Butterworth Gallery in Deeside since the end of 2003. Her paintings are held in private collections across the U.K, Spain and New Zealand. Mary is planning another exhibition in Aberdeen in the summer and following that she’s considering doing some work in Edinburgh and Glasgow. www.butterworthpaintings.co.uk

Another selfdestructing tape has arrived from Trend Towers and this issue’s mission is to penetrate that last bastion of masculinity - golf. > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS
King’s Links Golf Centre in Aberdeen has 56 floodlit bays on its driving range, but I’m escorted to one of the studios where Steven Craig, head instructor, has the unenviable task of teaching me to play golf. We start with an introduction to the clubs and sorting out a grip. I’m handed a six iron, my grip is adjusted again and I’m encouraged to hit a few balls off a piece of rubber tubing, then directly off the ground. The ball doesn’t go quite as far as Steve’s shots, but I hardly ever miss. The studio is wired for video and Steve can show you what you’re doing well, and where improvement is needed. Luckily the video system doesn’t seem to pick up sound, since I’m sure there have been a few curses. Steve can even show you how your swing compares with Tiger Woods’ which seems a little ambitious since Tiger has been playing since he’s two, and I’ve been playing for twenty minutes. Nonetheless, I’m happy to hear that I have a good swing. I’m convinced that it’s better when there’s no ball involved, and I’m told that this is true for all golfers. Steve says I’m hitting the ball about 100-150 yards and I’m pleased when I get the ball on the green – until I remember I’m supposed to be aiming for a blue sign about another hundred yards on and 30ft to the left. Not only is this a great way for beginners to get the basics before producing huge divots on a course, it’s also a useful exercise for more experienced golfers who want to improve some aspect of their game. Given a couple more hours. I could have given Colin Montgomerie a run for his money. Kings Links Golf Centre Golf Road, Aberdeen AB24 1RZ Tel: 01224 641577 www.kings-links.com

TOYS FOR THE BOYS > WORDS BY SARAH WATTIE
Best of British > WORDS BY DAVID GILLANDERS
First impressions in today’s world are so very important, whether it be meeting that certain someone, looking for a new home or buying a car. I defy anyone to look at the Jaguar XKR and tell me that they do not like what they see. Also, best of all it is British. Does the XKR drive as well as it looks?
lever and selector-gate surround with twin contrast stitching, highlighting door panels and instrument panels.
Well with a 4.3 litre, V8 super-charged engine delivering over 400 hp, 0 – 60 in just over four seconds, bolted onto a ridged aluminium structure, derived from aerospace technology and feeding through a fully automatic gear box which actually adapts itself to your driving standard – the answer is simply – Yes.
As I do most of my testing at night when the roads are quiet, I particularly enjoyed the active front lighting which can deflect the headlight beams up to 15%, casting light deeper into corners and with censors that react to the car’s speed and steering input – it gave me great confidence for driving in the dark. Also worth a mention is Jaguar’s smart key system, as long as I had the key fob in my pocket, the car unlocked as I approached, all that was then required was that I press the start button.

Jaguar give an option called Portfolio which means you can have your own personal choice of interior, for example you can choose to have an alloy gear
Reclining in the luxury sports seats with soft grain perforated leather and 16 way adjustment seats, you cannot help but be seduced by the opulence.
I drove this particular model, first of all on the motorway to see how it performed. At 70 mph it is whisper quiet and I could listen to the Bowers & Wilkins surround system and almost forget I was in a high performance coupe. Just to remind me I left the motorway for some B roads, I know really well, to put the car through its paces. Here the V8 and lightweight suspension systems really came into their own, allowing me to exploit the 400 hp to its full potential. I particularly liked to hear the noise track from the exhausts, which was certainly on a par with the stereo system. The British tend to knock all things British. If it is not German for cars, French for food, Italian for fashion, then it is not right. Well at long last the Brits i.e. Jaguar have developed a car which can compete, in not only performance but in style. With sales up 85%, then obviously it is not only my opinion. In plain language – if you want a car that has classic looks and will look good for many years to come, also gives you that feel good factor, then look no further than the XKR.
CBR 12 Evolution Vibe Sub (Halfords) Ideal for car show fans or just those who crave a deeper base sound, this Evolution Vibe Sub Woofer, Sub and Amp pack is one of the best on the market. A modified version of an already popular sub, this in-style accessory is available for £229.99 and promises to greatly increase both sound and base. For the best effect and most efficient space installation, it is best to have a professional fit the pack.
Garmin Nuvi Satellite Navigation (Maplin) The Garmin Nuvi SatNav is a multitalented travel assisting device with full western European maps, speech recognition and a pre-installed speed camera database. This particular GPS costs £229.99 and is perfect for the avid traveller. Packed with all the essential navigation requirements, the only drawback to this increasingly essential gadget is the occasional inaccuracy of the voice recognition. However, the clear picture, large 4.3inch widescreen display and its up to date speed camera advisory makes it a popular choice when perusing SatNav systems.
Clarion VRX578RUSB (Checkpoint) The perfect in car entertainment unit comes in the style of the Clarion VRX578RUSB. This DVD and CD combo is available for £499.99 and comes both ipod and DivX ready. Along with USB ports and standard playback DivX, this system also has a seven inch TFT colour LCD monitor, which is enhanced by the adjustable display brightness. Although more pricey than similar products the Clarion guarantees quality and with the added advantage of being a mobile phone transceiver, this gadget is the ideal purchase.
Prices start from £70,097.00 Kindly supplied by Stratstone, Aberdeen
Recaro Sportster CS (Checkpoint) Available in different colours and fabrics, the Recaro Sportster CS has been developed for car fanatics who are not willing to compromise on quality or comfort. Priced at £750, the Recaro is more expensive than rival brands but the end product is definitely worth the extra splurge.

COMPETITION WINNERS
Andy James Signing off with. . . .
If the face isn’t instantly recognisable, the voice will be – Andy James hosts the weekday Drive Time show on Northsound 1 at 96.9FM, sharing his wit, chat and music with listeners all over the North-east of Scotland. He lives in Blackburn with his wife and son.
pubs and clubs for years so I prefer to go to a restaurant and there are some great places in Inverurie. We can also be found walking in the woods near where we live, accompanied by our dog.
What do you like most about living in the North-east?
The Isle of Capri, without a doubt. We got married in Italy and Capri was an amazing place – and it was boiling hot too – and I’d like to explore more of the Amalfi coast. We had a great time skiing in Austria before Easter and will probably go to Portugal later in the year, where Zoe’s parents have a house.
Definitely the people. The people are really nice in the North-east and particularly with the oil industry being so dominant it has brought a good mix of people to the area. I moved to Aberdeen from Sheffield in 1986 with my family. I now live in Blackburn and I like the fact it doesn’t take long to get anywhere – we can be in the countryside in minutes. Where would we find you chilling out with trend? You’re most likely to find me at home. I am happiest when I’m with my wife Zoe and our baby son Samuel, who’s eight months old. I don’t tend to go out in town very much as I’ve worked in 66
What is your ideal holiday?
What makes Andy James tick? My family, cars – especially my Golf GTI music and my work – I know I have an unusual job and I love the entertainment side of things. My show is broadcast on Northsound 1 from 4pm to 7pm each weekday and from 10am to 1pm at the weekend, and I like sharing the things I’ve done or found out that day. It’s like a big happy meeting in the pub! www.northsound1.com 59

What makes Andy James tick? My family, cars – especially my Golf GTI music and my work – I know I have an unusual job and I love the entertainment side of things. It’s like a big happy meeting in the pub! www.northsound1.com 59
