Editor’s welcome The lighter nights mean we’ve all been busy at Trend Towers, scouring the city and beyond for the best places to shop, eat, drink, visit and experience. It’s a rough job, but someone’s got to do it. We’ve been zooming off to York and down zip wires, checking out fabulous gems and the latest in beachwear, sorting out great competitions, trying out everything from teen skin products to sushi, and planning some fabulous new Trend events. We’ve also been getting ready for the Trend Life with Style Awards. This

always brings together some of the most glamorous people in the North East. Since the judging is independent, I have no idea about who the winners are, but I do know that all the guests will be looking great. The ladies would give most of Hollywood a run for their money when it comes to red-carpet dressing and impeccable grooming, and the gentlemen never let the side down either. Frankly, it’s slightly intimidating to be in such a well dressed gathering, so this year I’ve enlisted a secret weapon. You can read about it all inside... Alison

Aesthetics nurse, Louise Mackintosh, a trained beauty therapist and former theatre nurse, is now offering one of the film stars’ latest favourite beauty boosts, dermaroller. Also known as micro-medical skin needling, a skin renewal technique that creates a smoother, healthier, younger-looking skin, it’s fantastic for tackling fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, stretch marks and uneven textured skin. A topical anaesthetic is applied before the dermaroller device is passed over the skin, creating micro channels to stimulate collagen and elastin production. The skin regenerates and repairs itself as a result of its own natural healing process. Suitable for most areas of the body, a course of three sessions is recommended. And unlike more aggressive treatments, the downtime is minimal, meaning you’ll be looking your best in virtually no time at all.

Beach Babes Sizzle this summer in sexy prints and bold brights

24

> words by ALISON DANIELS

This summer is all about a seventies style and that includes on the beach. Get yourself a big floppy straw hat. Great for protecting your skin from the sun and also, teamed with a pair of Jackie O style sunglasses oozes vintage screen siren. Effortless and amazingly chic. Jewellery has to be big and bold, from necklaces to earrings. The key word this summer is colour and a great way to incorporate some colour is through your jewellery, the brighter the better. Bags should be kitsch and vintage inspired, think straw bags with polka dots or monochrome stripes. Tunics, kaftans, arongs, shorts, everyone needs to have a classic beach cover up. Tie a belt round your waist to cinch you in and enhance your gorgeous curves. It’s summer so don’t stress, spray on some spf and let your beach style do the talking.

Spot on...

Michele Ross is a classic example of the woman who liked the business so much she bought it. Formerly a PA and events manager with the Society for Underwater Technology, she’d been an enthusiastic client of The Yoga Spot in Aberdeen.

Participants can practise all levels of power yoga - derived from the Ashtanga Vinyasa system - from beginner to serious enthusiast, Mysore and Vinyasa Flow classes.

When the owner Gill McClean decided to sell up, Michele resolved to give up her job and take over the business herself.

The Yoga Spot, the only West End yoga studio, also offers pregnancy yoga, has a small, private studio for individual clients and runs regular workshops with renowned practitioners leading exercises and lecturing on anatomy and physiology.

Now she’s a full-time yoga instructor with her own studio, taking nine classes a week plus private clients, supported by a team of regular instructors including Jodi, Holly and Siobhan. Not bad for someone who never considered taking up yoga until just two years ago. Previously a gym fanatic and runner, it was only when she suffered constant injuries that it was suggested that the discipline might help. After a couple of classes she was hooked. “I fell in love with it and a few months later I started coming to The Yoga Spot. I then did teacher training and knew I wanted to teach.” Discovering that the business was for sale was pure serendipity - the chance to merge business with pleasure. In the cool, tranquil studio in Ruthrie Terrace, where early morning sessions are often accompanied by birdsong, she offers a wide range of classes throughout the day, evenings and weekends. 26

It also houses the Deeside Treatment Studio, where Holly Scotchburn-Snell offers osteopathy, sports and remedial massage and pregnancy massage. The Yoga Spot 1a Ruthrie Terrace, Aberdeen, AB10 7JY E: michele@the yogaspot.co.uk M: 07745 929660 www.theyogaspot.co.uk

Restaurant REVIEWS

Dinner Review, Broadstraik Inn I’ve always been a fan of local and country pubs and stepping up to the mark is the Broadstraik Inn in Elrick, Westhill. Well placed, just 8 miles west of Aberdeen, the Broadstraik Inn has a homely bar leading through to a large restaurant area. Food is important with many local suppliers listed on the menu which features a range of pub classics as well as more elaborate dishes. Arriving at 8pm on a Friday night, both bar and restaurant was very busy and lively. Our visit coincided with one of the occasional entertainment nights. J C Lee is a Tenerife based entertainer and his banter and covers of the Drifters and Michael Buble soon has a couple of tables of ladies up dancing. 28

Back to the food, there is an Asian influence to a number of dishes which saw my partner enjoy a platter of battered salt and sweet and sticky chilli sauce squid whilst I had a bowl of sweet chilli Shetland mussels from the specials board, the broth had a good spicy kick and Thai fragrance. A steely, crisp and tangy Domaine De Chatelain Expression Terroirs Sancerre 2009 provided a refreshing backdrop. I followed with a tender pan fried venison haunch, sweet potato dauphinoise (I’m going to try to do that at home) and honeyed shallots and beetroot. My partner raided the specials board for a delicate rock turbot steamed in

banana leaf and served with Asian coleslaw. After all that, 1 pudding with 2 spoons was the only option and the trio of apple was a great idea- apple crumble ice cream, apple tart and apple brulee. So if you like your pub experience to be a welcoming one with good food then head to the Broadstraik Inn. Lunch Review, Yorokobi by CJ I had only ever had great sushi in big cities like Toronto, New York and London, and so when I discovered that there was great sushi in Aberdeen I was over the moon, it makes sense in a city that is famous for its fresh fish. Yorokobi has only been at its Huntly Street location for about a year now but sushi lovers may know it from its days as a take away in Aberdeen Market. At first glance the menu is extensive offering a long list of sushi, sashimi as well a selection of traditional Korean dishes making it hard to make a decision. We decided to share a selection of sushi with a portion of the spicy edamame beans to

share, I would usually just have these with salt and lime but the spicy coating gave them an extra kick. The sushi comes served with a side of wasabi paste, pickled ginger and a soy sauce. Our selection included the salmon nigiri (4 pieces),sushi rice topped with slices of fresh salmon that melt in your mouth, these are simple but delicious and best dipped in some soy sauce with some pickled ginger and a spot of wasabi, if you like it hot. We also ordered two portions of the maki (6 pieces) one salmon and avocado and the other spicy tuna. These did not disappoint the salmon and avocado made a perfect combination and the tuna topped with the spicy sauce was fantastic.

In my opinion I saved the best for last, the soft shell crab hand roll. These are a cone-shaped sushi filled with rice and a delicious soft shell crab that has been deep-fried in a light tempura batter, by far my favourite. The name Yorokobi actually means ‘joyous bliss’, which is a perfect way to describe the sushi here. I will definitely be going back to sample some more of their great selection of dishes. Innspired Pub Food There was a time when pub grub meant one thing – unimaginative stodge and a packet of pork scratchings if you were lucky. Today that couldn’t be further from the truth – especially at Elrick’s Broadstraik Inn near Westhill. Yes, you’ll find the old favourites like fish and chips, steak pie and macaroni cheese, but thanks to executive chef Chris Wills’ time in Thailand and New Zealand, you’ll also find a fascinating fusion of East meets West – salt and chilli squid with Asian coleslaw, anyone? Thai-style chicken cakes with pineapple salad? For traditionalists there are dishes like grilled 30

North Sea fish mornay or egg Benedict but the menu circumnavigates the globe offering antipasti, tomato and feta salad, haggis fritters and wok-fried duck and noodles. On occasion, you might spot wild boar or venison. General Manager Lesley Hardie says: “We like to source local produce and create different kinds of food. Our menu changes dramatically from lunch – all under £10 – to dinner and new menus are introduced every couple of months, with mini versions of dishes available for children.” As a country pub open all day, she believes good food should be available all day, so

. . . a i l a Cockt ntury

21st ce

To celebrate the recent birthday of Sir Ian Fleming on May 28th, we bring you a cocktail made famous in print (1953) and on film (1967 & 2006) in ‘Casino Royale’. In this 007 adventure, Bond orders this at the casino. Pour the Lillet over ice in a mixing glass then add the gin and vodka. Top up the glass with more ice and stir around 40 times until the liquid and the ice are at the same level. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a long thin twisted piece of lemon skin. VESPER MARTINI 75ml Martin Millers gin 25ml 42 Below Vodka 12.5ml Lillet Blanc 1 Lemon Twist

Fleming was an almost unknown author who may not have had such success, had it not been for JFK’s admiration for the Bond character which made the world take notice. So raise your glass to both these gentlemen as without either we may never have had the pleasure of the Vesper Martini.

chef focus

How would you describe your approach to cooking?.I always use the best quality ingredients, in season and locally sourced and cook them simply, but well. I try to offer a good balance of texture and temperature in the elements of each dish, to make it more interesting for the diner. Quality ingredients deserve respect, both in the handling and cooking. How does a chef develop their own style? First, learn the basics, understand what is happening during the cooking process and why, then begin to experiment! For example, if you understand why bread rises or what is happening as ice cream crystallizes, then you can think about how changing an ingredient might affect the end result. What's the worst thing that's ever happened to you in a kitchen? Things go wrong and equipment breaks down all the time in kitchens (usually on Saturday morning so you can’t get it fixed until Monday!!). You just have to improvise, innovate and adapt your way through it. If I had to choose a worst thing, it would probably be the day I cut the end of my finger off – right to the bone!

Executive Chef at Raemoir House Hotel

What do you eat when you're off duty? Anything as long as I don’t have to cook it myself. Other than your own, what's the best restaurant you've been to, or the most memorable dish you've eaten? I had a chilled tomato consommé at Gordon Ramsays @ Hospital Road which was amazing. Very simple, yet light and bursting with flavour.

Incredibly, some people actually convert such relics for 21st century use, enjoying the reaction they provoke. Obviously they hadn’t used them in the last millennium. Just like today’s high-tech handsets, DF Communications has been transformed over the decades. The staff of three has grown to 15 and the business has expanded beyond recognition, providing communications equipment and expertise spanning a range of products and services. Founded in 1986 by the late Dick Fleming, the company is now headed

by his daughter Fiona with Craig Forsyth as sales director. The business prides itself on being local, easily accessible and approachable. It caters for professionals from the one-man plumbing business to farmers, hauliers, entrepreneurs and large energy and service companies requiring hundreds of handsets. Focusing on business clients, it meets their needs not only for standard mobiles, BlackBerries and iPhones on contract via Vodafone and O2, but also provides landline services, hands free car kit and DVD installation plus tracking systems.

The hallmark of DF Communications is its relaxed atmosphere and awardwinning customer relations, recently recognised by O2 as the best in the UK. A girl's best friend

Marilyn Monroe may have been on to something when she sang that diamonds were a girl’s best friend, but Aberdeen’s jewellery fans may well have a new best friend in the shape of > words by ALISON DANIELS Helen Plumb and her beguiling new shop in Cults. Helen is an internationally renowned gemologist with a deep and infectious enthusiasm for all types of gemstones. As well as certified diamonds, she stocks a dazzling array of coloured gemstones of truly exceptional quality. As a geologist, she has trade contacts all over the world and makes regular overseas buying trips. This means she often has stones that simply aren’t available elsewhere at very fair prices. I’m soon cooing over tray after tray of sparkling, exquisitely cut stones. Helen’s stock includes gorgeous green emeralds and grossular garnets, sparkling sapphires and spinels, rubies and rubellites, topazes, tourmalines and tons more. With prices from £20 to around £10,000 per stone, you're bound to fall in love with something. My Christmas wish list has been sorted really early this year! Mongolian Odyssey It may have taken Odysseus ten years to make his epic journey, but a team of three Aberdeen chaps are planning to spend the summer on an automotive on a challenge of a lifetime. > Words by DAVID GILLANDERS

On the 23rd of July, they’ll drive from Goodwood to Mongolia, covering 10,000 miles by road, track and desert, over rough terrain and through isolated mountain regions. Chris Gauci and teammates Martin Lisle and Chris Wells say the trip will take them at least 4 weeks travelling through Russia and Kazakhstan. If this does not sound daunting enough, they’re not using a state of the art long distance rally-prepared car. Instead, their mode of transport is a standard 1994 GMC ambulance which has a 6.5 L diesel engine. Chris and his team might be the only ones who’ll be leaving their vehicle at the finish line, however. They’ll donate the ambulance

to a suitable hospital in Mongolia. The fully functioning ambulance will be stocked with essential medical supplies will be given to a deserving home in one of the most remote parts of the planet. The team hopes to raise as much money as possible for the Ellenor Lions Hospice www. ellenorfoundation.org which provides specialist care for adults and young people with progressive life illnesses. The boys will be up against two hundred teams from as far as Canada, Norway and Spain, all heading for Ulan Bator. As with all adventures of this nature, they require proper backing and support and with this in mind the team hope some of Trend’s readers can lend a hand either by supporting their fundraising efforts or helping out with some essential equipment like sump guards or tyres. You can reach Chris Gauci by email: chrisgauci@gmail.com. The team will be meeting their own costs for the rally and getting home again.

TIME TO GO IT ALONE IN BUSINESS? Starting your own business is an exciting but challenging experience and that is particularly so in the current economic climate. There is no doubt however that, when measured against other areas of Scotland, the Northeast continues to offer some interesting opportunities for entrepreneurs. To make sure your new business gets off to the best possible start and provides you with a stable platform for the future, it is crucial that you give careful consideration to some fundamental legal issues at the earliest possible stage. These important issues include the following, 54

What will be your trading vehicle and what are the pros and cons of each – i.e. sole trader, partnership or limited company? Do you have an agreement with your business partner or investor? What about premises, should you buy or lease and if so how do you go about it? Do you have terms and conditions with your suppliers or customers and do they protect your business? Do you have contracts in place for your employees? What is your liability if things don’t work out? Have you thought about your exit strategy? At Aberdein Considine & Company, our experienced legal team works closely with our in-house independent financial advisers

to make sure all of your business’ legal and financial interests are protected. For further information, please contact Ritchie Whyte, partner on rwhyte@acandco.com or 01224 589700 at Aberdein Considine & Company’s Bon Accord Crescent office.

Take a dip into this summer’s styles with Biyoni

> words by HARRI GARRICK

Celebrities including Drew Barrymore, Alexa Chung and Danni Minogue have been seen rocking the latest two tone hair colour trend.

Harri Garrick Salon Manager

This style, known as ombre or dip-dyed hair, has proved a hit on the catwalks and is set to be the biggest trend for Summer 2011. The subtle bohemian/surfer look is achieved by using two colours, usually dark at the roots and a lighter tone at the ends. It is low maintenance and easily changeable, so anyone can enjoy a quick style update to bring their summer locks bang up to date. Biyoni Bucksburn Salon Manager, Harri Garrick, said; “I went for a natural look for our model Lucy, the style is fab as it doesn’t require a lot of up keep. It will look good all year round with regular maintenance and it’s certainly this year’s hottest look!” Another hot summer style is the ballerina bun. This is a timeless classic and is suitable for both day and night. A bun can be a great saviour for a bad hair day as it can be worn messy and textured or sleek and sophisticated.

Harri said; “The bun is a style that anyone with longer hair can recreate for themselves and it is very versatile. It has been very popular for bridal hair but it would also be great to wear as a wedding guest or a night out with the girls. I opted for a high bun for Lucy but the bun could also been worn as a low bun or to the side.” 3 easy steps to get the perfect bun: • Pull the hair back into a ponytail and secure with a hair bobble but as you pull the hair through for the last time stop half way, so you are left with a loop of hair and a tail. Wrap the tail around the bobble to hide it and secure with a hair pin. • Tease out the loop to separate it and pull forward to meet at the front, secure with a hair pin. • You should now have a bun shape and all that’s left is to secure the bun tightly with hair pins. There you have it - this seasons must have pin up! www.biyoni.com 55

Teenage skin: A spot of bother > words by ALISON DANIELS

In France, it’s common for girls of twelve or thirteen to be whisked off to a beauty salon by their mothers to be initiated in the mysteries of skin care and personal grooming. For teenagers, spots can feel like a social disaster, while acne can leave scars on the psyche as well as the skin.

with a gentle, alcohol-free cleanser then hydrating and protecting with a light-weight moisturiser with a built-in sun protector will be sure to regulate young, hormonal skin”.

According to Image and Grooming expert, Nicky Hambleton-Jones, “For young teens, it’s important to keep the skincare regime as simple and fuss-free as possible, to ensure it does not turn into a chore and is seen as essential as brushing your teeth. Adopting a basic regime such as cleansing morning and evening

The Cleanance range from Eau Thermale Avène is ideal for sensitive oily or problem skin. All the products in the range contain soothing Avène Thermal Spring Water and the anti-irritant properties of Cucurbita Pepo to help regulate sebum production. Their new TriAcnéal non-comedogenic cream combines

56

Here are a few of Trend’s favourites for problem skin:

Efectiose®, Retinaldehyde and Glycolic Acid to encourage the elimination of blemishes and prevent scarring. Elemis has a reputation for keeping skin well moisturised and in tiptop condition, so it’s no surprise that their new freshskin range also makes Trend’s hot picks list. Each product is formulated with active raw ingredients, such as elderflower, rosehip seed oil, apple, blackcurrant, goji berry, geranium combined with skin kind bases specially chosen for their ability to help cleanse, exfoliate, prevent damage, moisturise and boost skin’s elasticity to keep it youthful for longer.

Trilogy’s range includes a gently effective Balancing Gel Cleanser and Energising Face Lotion that particularly suit teen skins. Derma-e is new here, but is the USA’s No 1 brand for problem skin, with products specifically designed for teenage skin. Their range uses tea-tree, willow bark, rosewood, lavender and chamomile to sooth inflammation and combat blemishes. The Spot Blemish Treatment is ideal for isolated breakouts, too. Tisserand also do a natural AntiBlemish Stick which works well.

Many teenagers believe a tan will make them look better, but sun beds are off limits to the under eighteens and many instant tans leave unfortunate streaks and an orange complexion. Proto-Col’s Instant Tan is a reliable product that gives a natural healthy glow. Gentle exfoliation can help clear pores and prevent sebum building up, but many products are harsh. We love RawGaia’s hand-made natural and organic Bamboo and Pumice Exfoliator. It’s a finely ground powder made that exfoliates energizes, polishes and leaves the skin glowing, radiant and blemish free.

Nothing beats a healthy diet and a decent night’s sleep, but for some teenagers, a supplement like Work’s with Water’s Help Clear Skin can help rebalance the complexion. Alternatively, you could do worse than follow the French and book a late afternoon appointment at your favourite skin care salon. In our experience, teenagers don’t really do mornings...

tells a story EVERY PICTURE

LISETTE DEGIOANNI IS AN AWARD-WINNING ARTIST WITH A COLOURFUL PAST AND A BRIGHT FUTURE

Born to Italian parents in Tangiers, she spent her teenage years in Spain before settling down in Scotland and raising a family. “Morocco and Spain are countries of strong colours and strong emotions! I like deep, intense and warm colours, but I seldom think about it they just creep in,” Lisette laughs, “I always meant to be an artist, drawing and painting since I can recall, and taking part time courses while the children were small. It was only when I came to Scotland and my children were older that I could finally enrol at Grays School of Art, graduating with a travel scholarship.

“I am interested in people, and the interactions between people. I am also interested in our sense of identity and how it is shaped. For me, a painting will always start from a story or some recollection from my past. I then will use models to enact my version and I use props that I find are relevant to that narrative. It then takes on a life of its own, but as I paint I need to have a plot in my mind, a plot that thickens and changes but a story nevertheless to make the painting interesting to me. I also find it fascinating that the viewer, often unaware of my story will come up with his or her own version,

dictated by their own experiences, one painting can have many different narratives”. Lisette exhibits throughout the UK and regularly show at Aberdeen’s Heinzel Gallery and the Milton in Banchory. In June, her work will be shown at Craigcrook Castle as part of the Venice Biennale, which celebrates the links between Scotland and Italy. Lisette also undertakes commissions and can be contacted at www.degioanni.co.uk

Feat of clay Sarah Coonan

Ellon-based Sarah Coonan is one of those people lucky enough to discover what she wanted to do with her life and to have fulfilled her ambition.

60

profile

After a visit to the Grays School of Art Degree Show in 2007, she was so impressed with the high standard and diversity of the ceramics on display that she decided to switch from her plan to study French and Art History in favour of a more practical course, opting for Three Dimensional Design. Sarah explained, “Having no experience with clay I experimented for the first year and came to the conclusion that I wanted to combine fine art and design in my work. Japanese ceramicists such as Takahiro Kondo influence me to a large extent. His approach to creating contemporary ceramics while conforming to the characteristic cobaltblue-on-white decoration is fresh yet still remains traditional”. “Japanese prints by the masters Hokusai and Hiroshige along with Nana Shiomi, a printmaker based in South England who practices the old method of wood carving, influence my drawing style with their clean lines and flat, vibrant colours. Another enduring influence is irezumi -a Japanese form of tattooing provides which involves creating one piece to cover the whole body rather than numerous small designs. This fascinates me as transferring a two dimensional image onto a three dimensional form without distortion is extremely difficult. The irezumi masters have perfected their technique to create stunning, flawless imagery which follows the movement of the human body without any obvious distortion. As well as artists, poets such as Jacques Prévert will continue to inspire me in my creation of narrative pieces exploring my interpretation of their works through drawing”. Sarah makes a variety of objects in clay including jewellery, bowls and bottles. “I’m researching constantly. Whether it is visiting Art Galleries and Fairs or reading books and articles, it is essential for inspiration. Having thought of an idea I explore various options for surface decoration through sketching and then develop the form following this. The beginning to the end product can take around a week. Four days for making and three for the firing. First the bisque firing to vitrify the clay, then glaze firing and a final decal and lustre firing”. The end result is a wonderful fusion of cerebral, visual and tactile qualities, creating objects that you’ll love for years to come. Sarah’s ceramics are available from: Coco Violet, 70 The Green: porcelain jewellery pieces which are priced between £16 and £22. Junction Art, 282 Holburn Street: stocks jewellery and some miniature porcelain alcohol bottles. These are priced from £15 to £35 or sets for £100. Larger pieces including stoneware bowls are priced at around £130. Pieces are also available from Sarah’s website and she is happy to discuss commissions: www.sarahcoonan.com 61

I Old York

profile travel feature

My first trip to York definitely will not be my last. Far enough away to be really different, but close enough to still be convenient, it makes for the perfect weekend destination. > words by KATE GRAY

64

profile

My boyfriend and I chose the hassle free travel option, hopped on an East Coast line service, and idled away a pleasant few hours watching the countryside fly by and taking advantage of the table service in first class. Nothing improves a journey quite like a pleasant view and a fresh bacon roll.

We walked, we shopped, and we must have sampled cakes in the majority of tea-rooms in York.

We arrived in York rested and ready to make the most of our time...and eager to see the hotel.

The view from the top – not only of York, but of the minster itself – was well worth the exertion of the climb. I could have stood for hours looking down on all the crooked charm of the city, but there was more to do.

The five star Cedar Court Grand certainly exceeded our expectations. The building itself – the old York railway headquarters – was magnificent, and inside the hotel was even nicer - a stunning blend of original Victorian features and luxurious modern furnishings. Our room was big enough to be a room of pairs – two levels, two bathrooms, two TVs - we almost didn’t want to leave. York, however, was beckoning, so we set off to explore, spurred on by friendly tips from the staff. As well as boasting one of the finest restaurants in the city, the Cedar Court Grand is a stone’s throw from the historic centre of York, so it’s ideal for a packed weekend break. In minutes we were among perfect medieval buildings, working our way along cobbled streets and ducking in and out of lively alleys filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, every one set in buildings that - in any other city - would be attractions in their own right.

The climb up the York Minster tower began as a token effort to burn off some excess calories, but – several hundred steep steps later – ended up being one of the highlights of the trip.

We could not have gone to York without visiting The Shambles – the city’s oldest street, and one of the most photographed places in Britain. It is so old, and so narrow, that the buildings lining the street lean toward one another at the top, buckling under their own age and forming a kind of medieval canopy. The whole city is astonishing, and seems designed to be admired – everywhere we went, no matter what square we were in, what alley we explored, or what corner we turned, there were people sitting outside, enjoying the city, watching the olde world go by. I was, at first, sad to leave. Until I remembered that I’m only ever a few easy hours away. www.eastcoast.co.uk www.cedarcourtgrand.co.uk

The last time I used the words ‘treetop’ and ‘adventure’ in the same sentence, I was nine years old and about twenty minutes from a visit to A&E. It was a hard way to learn that swinging from trees is something best done under the supervision of experts. Fortunately for Aberdeen, those experts have arrived. Go Ape is a heart-pounding obstacle course, set high in the trees of Crathes Castle that will have you facing your fears and calling on your inner gladiator in equal measure. What begins with a thirty-minute training session ends with over two hours of climbing, swinging, leaping, crawling, flying and, of course, primal screaming. As a person who gets weak knees standing on a chair to change a light bulb, I was a bit worried that my fear of heights would get in the way when my sons and I joined the team at Go Ape on their launch day. I needn’t have 68

worried because from the minute you climb your first rope ladder, you are so focused on harnesses, foot placement, and generally trying to look brave, the height is actually the last thing on your mind. The course presents an endless array of challenges, from rope bridges to Tarzan swings to zip wires that go on forever. By the time you reach the end, you are as overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment as you are with the trembling in your arms and legs, though the children seemed unaffected by the latter. If you want to try something totally different, I highly recommend a visit to Go Ape – but be warned, there is no graceful way to land in wood chips at the bottom of a 125-metre zip wire, so plan to leave your ego at home. Dear Trend

Any chance of a few more articles about men’s fashion? The girls are spoilt with a photo shoot in each issue and tons of advice about what’s new and where to buy it, but us blokes don’t get much of a look in.

I recently had to stay in Aberdeen for three weeks for a work project, being put up in a serviced apartment. I had heard from my colleagues who’d previously visited that the city had little to do and it would be too cold to venture outside.

Some of us don’t want to live in jeans and old t-shirts and do own more than two pairs of shoes, you know. Thanks Anthony Jones, Aberdeen

Dear Trend, I am emailing to thank you for the amazing experience my partner and I recently enjoyed at The Chester Residence in Edinburgh as a result of your competition! Located within walking distance of Princes Street, we not only took full advantage of the apartment suite we won for the weekend, but also enjoyed dining out in the small boutique restaurants and visiting all the well-known visitor attractions during the weekend. The suite itself was just stunning – relaxed and comfortable as it was luxurious with complimentary Molton Brown goodies, wine and nibbles. The staff also made our stay very comfortable offering anything and everything to ensure our visit was as stress-free as possible. This is somewhere I would certainly consider returning to. A much appreciated treat which we thoroughly enjoyed! Thank You Trend, Lesley McIntyre

Luckily for me, there was a copy of Trend in the apartment and I had a fabulous time trying out a few bars, restaurants and doing a bit of shopping, guided by your recommendations. The sun even shone for most of my stay, making the city centre sparkle. Thanks for making being away from home that bit more enjoyable. You’ve even made me wonder what treasures my own town has to offer and I’m determined to make more of an effort to find out. Best regards. Linda Hall, Reading

Please email us before 14 July 2011 at: info@trendmagazine.co.uk. Include your name, address and contact numbers and tell us where you picked up your copy of Trend.

> WORDS BY KATE GRAY

The Heart of the City Standing outside Union Square, watching a stream of people work their way up Bridge Street and towards the Trinity centre, I decide to forgo the elbows and harassment and go against the crowd. I want a more interesting route to the Bon Accord centre.

With that in mind, I head off along Guild Street, pass under the scaffolding-clad Tivoli theatre, turn left up Stirling Street, and suddenly find myself in the heart of Merchant Quarter. Among the fluorescent lights and big chain shops and restaurants in Union Square, it is easy to forget that Aberdeen is an old city. As soon as you enter Merchant Quarter, however, it hits you again. And stays with you. Cobbled streets are the first big reminder. Cobbles, to me, suggest strolling, rather than rushing, and they scream ‘Look up!’ because, inevitably, where there is a cobbled street, there are historic buildings worth looking at. Stirling Street soon proves me right. Here, I am within a few streets of the site where the Carmelite Friary once stood. It was founded in 1273, but when I look up I see its influence in the buildings that stand here now, in carved stonework and statues and arched windows. 70

When I reach the top of Stirling Street I turn towards the Green. Two hours, some dinner and a coffee later I’m still at the Green. The afternoon has turned to evening and my plans of going to the Bon Accord centre are a distant memory. This place invites you to linger, and the growing darkness only brings more atmosphere, proving – I have to say - that the charm of old fashioned lamp-posts should never be underestimated. The area draws you in and makes it impossible not to sit and consider its age.

of the city, watching people come and go, and wondering who was coming and going, two, three, or even four hundred years ago. An area with history - history that is everywhere, unmistakable, and in every detail – makes it infinitely more interesting than anywhere new. Character, uniqueness, and soul – these are the things that history can bring to a place, and it has certainly brought them to the Merchant Quarter.

As early as the twelfth century, Aberdeen harbour was turning into a busy port, which in turn meant that the Merchant Quarter area gradually grew into a trading hub.

Merchant Quarter extends North from Guild Street up to the top of Correction Wynd, and West from Bridge Street to Ship Row.

Even now, on a Saturday evening, there is a real market feeling around the Green, and I am reluctant to leave. There is something very satisfying about sitting in one of the oldest parts

I enjoyed an LVL treatment in February at Preen Beauty with a discount of £25. Normal price £100, with Trend discount £75. I have bought some lovely gifts at Athena gifts on Rose Street, also enjoying a 20% discount with Trend card. I also love the discount on my regular visits to The House.

I have used my card at a few places but mainly The Store at Foveran and the discount for the cafe has been very welcome and it is a lovely place to stop for a coffee or lunch and a chat and this is an added bonus and I have never had a problem obtaining the discount or special offers.

Invest in dressing with confidence > words by ALISON DANIELS

Like most women, my wardrobe is crammed full to bursting point, but I still have nothing to wear. On average, each of us has twenty two things we’ve bought but never worn. I’m a serious offender. Let’s skip over the 137 pairs of shoes, shall we? As Trend’s editor, I feel I should dress like a much, much, younger version of Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada, but too often my inner Kathy Bates triumphs. So when Danit Levi, one of Scotland’s most experienced stylists, spoke to us about her new book and offered to have a look over my wardrobe, I couldn’t resist. Despite having some very high profile clients, Danit is supportive and nonjudgemental and this comes across in 74

her Body Glory Style Tips Journal, written in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. Danit classifies women’s bodies as types of flowers and the book, which is designed to encourage you to explore your own style, gather ideas, record feelings and plan outfits, is sprinkled liberally with nuggets of Danit’s style wisdom. I’m not promising that I’ll never make a mistake, or have the odd day when I look as if I’ve slept in a skip, but Danit and her book have left me with the confidence to wear new shapes, colours and styles and a much clearer idea on accessorising than before. I shall repeat my new mantra as I plan outfits...

WWDD? What would Danit Do? Buying a copy of Body Glory supports two great causes. The first is the Teenage Cancer Trust, so they can continue the great work they do and the second is your own clothing confidence level. The book is available for £10, but it, or a personal session with Danit, is going to save you a fortune. Available from: www.dressyourway.com www.amazon.co.uk www.teenagecancertrust.org

SEATON PARK, ABERDEEN 30/31ST JULY > words by DAVID NICHOLSON For a multitude of music fans, the summer months mean only one thing - festival season. For Aberdonians, this usually means a dilemma: either fork out for a ticket, plus accommodation, plus travel costs…or watch the live coverage on TV, all the while thinking “I wish I was there”. “If only…” you’d say, dreaming aloud. “If only Aberdeen had it’s own music festival...a proper, bona-fide festival, with two days of music spread over three stages, right here in the city! Imagine a weekend of chart-topping superstars like Tinchy Stryder, Kelis and Paloma Faith , top DJs and bands like Maximo Park, Idlewild, The Noisettes, Madness…right here on our own doorstep! Just imagine!!” “Ach..forget it,” you’d shrug, feeling defeated. “Nothing like that ever happens in Aberdeen…” Except - you’d be wrong! Thanks to the tireless efforts of Jim and Rachel Sandison - Aberdeen’s very own Michael and Emily Eavis - these very acts (and more) will wow the crowds in our very own Seaton Park at the inaugural Northern Lights music festival on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st of July. “We feel like this is something the city needs,” Jim says. “Between the support of

the council and the enthusiastic response from the public we’re hoping that this marks the beginning of an annual event.” In addition to the array of Main Stage acts, the Dance Tent features an impressive line up including Example, Kissy Sell Out and Sander van Doorn among others. Meanwhile, a third “Home Sweet Home” stage will feature harder dance acts on the Sunday. On the Saturday however, Aberdeen’s finest will have a chance to share the stage with indie favourites such as The Pigeon Detectives, We Were Promised Jetpacks and The Sunshine Underground. “Aberdeen boasts a fantastic music scene”, says Rachel. “We want to help bring it the recognition it deserves.” Café Drummonds are holding a series of showcases to decide which local acts will secure a slot. Footage of the heats can be found at local.stv.tv/Aberdeen. A gem of a lady in the world of charity – that’s Peggy Rita Finnie, of the famed jewellery concern in Aberdeen’s George Street, who was presented with the insignia of MBE by the Duke of Rothesay at Buckingham Palace last January. The honour was announced in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List and left the 71-year-old mother-of-four speechless, a rare occurrence for this most chatty individual, who has eight grandchildren. “I could not believe it and did not leave the house for two days,” said Peggy. “After all, it’s lovely to be able to help people and to be involved in their lives. It is so rewarding.” She cherishes the 160 letters and messages of good will that flowed in but is equally proud of the many testaments of thanks to her from people she has helped, including a former drug addict. For example, on the day of our chat, she had been to the Glendaveny Teddy Bears shop in Peterhead’s Broad Street which she helped to fit out when it opened in 86

1996. “The bears are made with pride by adults who have disabilities,” said Sheffield-born Peggy, who celebrated her golden wedding with husband Ron on March 28, 2009. The couple met when Aberdonian Ron was stationed at RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire and tied the knot in Grimsby before knuckling down to building up their jewellery business in Aberdeen. She has overcome serious health issues, most recently while on a cruise in South America. “That involved being airlifted to Santiago for emergency treatment but I survived,” she said. Action woman Peggy also likes to garden in between chasing about to places such as the Inchgarth community centre in Aberdeen. Go and have a cuppa there - it’s called Peggy’s Tea Room. There could be no higher compliment, not even an MBE.
