Evolving since its creation in 1980, the design of the Hublot watch has been enhanced to express a strong identity. The fusion of metals such as steel, tantalum, titanium, pink gold and ceramic is the core value and succeeds admirably. Seen in very few outlets, exclusive in Scotland to Jamieson & Carry, we are proud to present this exciting brand.

and our circulation from 5,000 to an amazing 17,000.
Each and every one of us who’ve been involved since the inception of this exciting project covets it like a baby.
From day one, it’s been tremendous fun. We’re all now proud to be moving into year three, and to be taking our cherished readers, advertisers and supporters with us.
MD Gill Buyers had the vision, and the rest of the team – from design, to sales, events, distribution, finance/ administration, print, photography, style and editorial - have been privileged to help make it happen. (Have we had to manage the tantrums that custodians of a two-year-old are led to expect? Now, that would be telling…!) Since our launch in October 2007, we have boosted our pages from 56 to 76 –
Our 2nd birthday fireworks display comes in the form of some of our most sparkling competitions ever – win four days in New York, an overnight stay in a Perthshire retreat, luscious lingerie, chic Juicy Couture watches, a day at the Nick Nairn Cookery School, and a consultation with a TV garden designer.

BEAUTY FEATURE
Before...
When Lori, Gail and the team at Beauty Uncovered told Trend they could make me look ten years younger, I assumed that they’d have to resort to surgery or Photoshop.
d e r e v o c n U y t Beau > WORDS BY
NIELS ALISON DA
I have an appallingly low maintenance approach to the way I look. If I’m honest, I don’t even own a comb, and my beauty routine most days consists of sunscreen. My face is a bit like a potato that’s been left in a shed all winter in a high gravity environment. On the rare occasions I wear makeup, you’d think it had been applied in a power cut during an earthquake.
The salon also offers a wide range of facials, peels, massages, Ioniethermie inch loss, aromatherapy, waxing, tinting, spray-tanning, manicures, pedicures and Ellipse laser treatments to ensure you look your best from top to toe.
So I put myself in Beauty Uncovered’s friendly and expert hands. After a consultation, the girls designed a custom programme to rejuvenate my skin. They suggested a combination of Diamond Tome micro dermabrasion, Omilux light sessions and CACI non surgical facelift treatments. Diamond Tome uses tiny diamond chips to slough off dead skin cells and reveal fresh skin. Omnilux uses light of different wavelengths to promote the production of collagen and elastin, plumping the skin and the CACI treatments use faradic currents to stimulate the facial muscles to turn back the clock. Each day, I used a range of Priori products with high levels of anti-oxidants. 10
After a month, my skin is springier and more resilient, the overall tone is improved. It feels smoother and glows with health. It’s also pinker and warmer and my jawline is firmer. My eyes look better since individual lash extensions were painstakingly applied. So did it work? Well, that’s for you to judge. I’m forty four. If that looks like a good number to you, then here’s another you’ll like even better. Phone 01224 869882 for an appointment and tell them I sent you.

WHERE KIDS CAN BE KIDS ADVERTORIAL
DAVID LLOYD LEISURE:
> WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
Fitness should be fun… which means there’s no better time to start than in childhood.
Aberdeen’s top fitness destination, David Lloyd Leisure, recently unveiled its new, state-of-the-art ‘Kids’ Space’ – a colourful play zone for children aged three months to 11 years. Kids can be kids in Kids’ Space. They now have their own dedicated activity zone within David Lloyd Leisure to be enjoyed on their own, with friends, or with family. Kids’ Space includes a crèche, which is open four mornings a week for little ones aged three months to five years. Qualified football coaches, gymnasts, dance teachers and fitness instructors are on hand to host seven-day-a-week instructions in a variety of classes. They include pre-school gym sessions, body conditioning for mums and babies, post natal classes, football coaching – and even music and movement. Parents and carers can choose to leave children in the care of Kids’ Space while they pursue their own exercise programmes – or join the youngsters in a joint fun class. “Children now have their own rainbow-lit, purpose-built space, with soft, cushioned flooring, a wall of mirrors with ballet bars, and every game imaginable,” said David Lloyd sports manager, Susie Malcolm. “This is the ideal way to introduce children to a positive attitude to fitness.” The Kids’ Space at David Lloyd Leisure is open seven days a week, and is available for children’s birthday parties. Smooth Opera tors It is common knowledge that healthy skin results from drinking plenty of water, avoiding excess sun, not smoking and a healthy diet. However sometimes nature needs a little help. Temple Aesthetics uses effective and proven treatments to restore volume, soften deep wrinkles and lines, and rejuvenate skin. Blemishes, uneven skin pigmentation, fine wrinkles and lines can all be treated without injections. Dr Sam Robson, a qualified GP, offers a free consultation where she can assess your skin. Following discussion with colleague Astrid, a beauty therapist with 25 years experience, they will advise which treatment will help achieve the best results.
“Tired skin can be refreshed, with the damaged outer layers removed. Underlying new skin will be stimulated and a youthful appearance and texture revealed with smaller pores and brighter, softer, smoother skin exposed,” explained Sam. Techniques include microdermabrasion, chemical peels and dermaroller, the favoured treatment of celebrities before a red carpet event. Collection Fall 2009 With two stores in Aberdeen and a third on the cards there’s no denying that @hamishmunro have found the perfect formula when it comes to selling fashion. With womenswear now accounting for over 30% of the turnover and the business still steadily growing, Orla Kiely is one of the new womenswear labels to be introduced in the store for autumn ’09. This collection shows us a designer who has brought her signature style to new levels while retaining the feminine charm and playfulness which she has become so well known for. New and exciting accessory brands have also been snapped up to add to their 20+ contemporary fashion jewellery brands, most of which are Scandinavian and with four collections each a year, the store is ever changing. On the footwear front purple and berry shades are the stand out colours and look stunning in some of the lace up shoes and ankle boots on show in the store. One of the cutest things they stock are the redfoot and cocorose foldable flat pumps, just great for popping in your handbag. In the new millennium, fashion has changed radically. Today, it's not about being in fashion. It's about having style and personality. You put together your outfit to express yourself. Fashion and freedom, hand in hand.

We’re offering one very lucky reader the chance to turn back the clock courtesy of SAKS, Aberdeen’s premier hair and beauty destination. The new CACI Ultra Anti-Aging Facial uses a combination of micro-currents, ultrasound, highfrequency vibration and diode photo stimulation to take years off your appearance. Essentially, the skin is refreshed, re-educated and rejuvenated using one of a choice of seventy different programmes, meaning each client gets a treatment regime designed to meet their individual skin’s needs. The CACI Ultra Anti-Aging Facial starts off with a relaxing cleansing and toning of the skin, followed by a gentle strawberry-scented fruit acid peel. Then the muscles of the face, cheeks, chin, forehead and eyes are treated to almost imperceptible stimulation and a rejuvenating serum. A special attachment is used to boost collagen production, improving the appearance of deeper wrinkles. Then the skin is treated with red light to promote healing and a blue light which helps improve the texture of pores, reduce oiliness and improve the skin. A special vibrating plate helps boost circulation and boosts sallow skin. This is followed by an intense moisture boost. CACI isn’t just for the girls either. An increasing number of men find that the CACI Ultra system leaves them with firmer, more toned facial skin. SAKS are offering one lucky Trend reader a course of ten CACI Ultra Anti Aging Facial treatments worth £550. To enter please answer this question: Where are the two Saks Salons located in Aberdeen? Fenner & Coburn /Rosie Thistle’s Tea Room
A match made in heaven > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS
Throughout history, there have been some great pairings. Anthony and Cleopatra and Romeo and Juliet to name two; and now Thistle Street provides the backdrop for another great duo. Fenner and Coburn share a retail space with Rosie Thistle’s Tea Room. It’s a match made in heaven for the busy shopper who fancies a break and a browse at the same time. The front of the shop is given over to Rosie Thistle’s Tea Room which offers a fresh and tasty selection of sandwiches, Panini’s and home baking. If you’re dying for a cuppa after a hard morning’s shopping, then you’ll be spoilt for choice. Rosie Thistle’s carries a range of speciality teas, coffees, Chinese herbal teas, and even an exotic rose petal tea. The hot chocolate shouldn’t be dismissed, either. Squashy sofas come equipped with a selection of books and magazines and offer an ideal haven to the reluctant male shopping companion. Install your other half with a coffee and a cupcake and he’ll be happy to wait while you treat yourself at Fenner & Coburn. Fenner & Coburn offer an outstandingly well chosen distillation of key seasonal trends in clothing, bags and footwear, much of it unique in Aberdeen. There are bags from Majo, Paparazzi and Lulu Guinness, footwear by Fly, Irregular Choice, Miss Sixty and Ursula Mascaro. Clothing ranges from padded jackets and chunky knitwear to delicate dresses in gossamer fabrics. There’s a great selection of directional, but wearable, jewellery to put the finishing touches to an outfit. The staff are friendly, relaxed and can also help put together an outfit or a capsule wardrobe to take you through the season.

Lunch Review: The Marine Hotel, Stonehaven I’m always drawn to the harbour side at Stonehaven, (it reminds me of time spent living on Guernsey), and I’ve been an occasional visitor to the Marine Hotel for as long as I’ve been in Aberdeen. This was my first visit since the refurbishment and I barely recognised the upstairs restaurant. Muted tones and dark wood set the scene, and there are glorious views over the harbour. We watched hopeful seagulls surround a fishing boat. A flotilla of ducks swam back and forth whilst children splashed about in the sea. As well as the wine list, there is an impressive menu of both Scottish and international beers by the bottle and on draught. From the pump, I chose a Hoegaarden wheat beer. I’m happy to experiment with my beer and food matching, and this is the place to do it as The Marine
Hotel was voted the CAMRA Scottish Pub of the year 2008/2009. All my good lunch time intentions of a salad or soup and sandwich went out of the window. The imaginative menu changes with the seasons. I began with a filo basket filled with smoked chicken and feta, and with a deliciously robust sundried tomato pesto, whilst my partner indulged in the Marines’ take on one of his favourites, a creamy hot smoked salmon skink served in its own bread bowl. The specials board enticed us for the main event. For me, what has now become a modern classic -scallops with black pudding. Perfectly seared and sweet, they were fragrant with basil oil and came with

mashed potatoes. Across the table, moist sea bass fillets were complimented by a creamy, curried mussel sauce and jasmine rice. Our youngest son had opted for the soup and wrap, and promised to share his warm banana pancakes with ice cream and butterscotch sauce - wonderfully indulgent they were too. A combination of cracking location, good food, interesting beers and speedy, friendly service mean that a return visit is on the cards. Dinner Review: The Bhan Thai, Aberdeen You can’t beat a good session of aromatherapy, but on this occasion I wasn’t being massaged with essential oils, I was revelling in the enticing aromas wafting around the restaurant. The Thai experience began with friendly waiting staff dressed in elegant Thai dresses and a Singha Thai beer in hand. We faced some difficult decisions but didn’t opt for one of the five set menus. However, we did submit to the Bhan Thai starter platter (£7.95 per person). Chicken Satay with peanut dipping sauce, Thai Fishcakes with a sweet and sour vinaigrette, Thoong Thong; crispy vegetable parcels with a sweet chilli sauce, Goong Hom Pha; deep fried wrapped
prawns and glossy and Sticky Honey Roast Pork Ribs. The individuality of the flavours shone through with each dish. We opted for a new world wine, the Australian Tiddy Widdy Well white (£14.50). An interesting blend of Colombard, Riesling and Sauvignon with vibrant lime, grapefruit and floral touches and refreshing just dry minerally, citrus notes.
rice and fried noodles with bean sprouts accompanied.
A Gaeng Masaman Curry (£9.50) awaited; slow cooked, fall apart lamb with potatoes and peanuts in a rich, highly fragrant gravy and Panang King Prawns (£12.00), an intense creamy red curry with coconut milk and Kaffir lime leaves and the seductive bite of finely tuned chilli. Steamed jasmine

The atmosphere and the attention to detail in both service and food have given the Bhan Thai a well deserved following. If you yearn for the authentic flavours of holidays in Thailand gone by then make sure that you add this restaurant to your ‘must visit’ list.

It’s no coincidence that romantic restaurant La Stella combines an Italian name with traditional French ambience. Take a generous helping of the freshest ingredients from Scotland’s natural larder. Fold in a good measure of rustic French fayre, and blend with the magnificent flavours of the Mediterranean. Serve by candlelight. That’s the dish of every day at La Stella in Aberdeen’s Adelphi Lane, which was acquired earlier this year by passionate chef Chris Tonner and his ‘front-ofhouse’ fiancée, Lynsey Yule. Promising Scottish fayre with a modern twist, intimate and romantic restaurant La Stella has won the hearts of Aberdeen’s most discerning diners. Chef Chris – whose enthusiasm for his relatively new venture is truly infectious
– has brought ‘bistronomy’ to Aberdeen by serving gastro food in a relaxed, bistro setting. Serving specialities such as beetroot, lime and Sambuca-cured sea trout, and 24-hour, slow-roasted belly of pork, it’s no wonder weekend tables at La Stella are reserved two weeks in advance. Trend tip: Sample La Stella’s succulent mussels, swathed in Scrumpy cider, pancetta and garlic cream. Devine. If the North-east’s schools are at the heart of the community, then Victoria Drysdale’s family orientated magazine is firmly at the heart of its schools.
in July 2007. Within only six months – a year prior to the vision outlined in her business plan – she introduced Raring2Go to Aberdeen city.
After the birth of her daughter, Natasha, three years ago, Victoria found that her career as a professional conference organiser at Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre (AECC) no longer suited her lifestyle.
With a focus of family and children aged under 12, the quarterly magazine is distributed among Aberdeen City Council primary schools, playgroups, leisure centres and shops, and has a circulation of 26,000.
At the end of 2006, she responded to an advertisement in a national glossy for an Aberdeenshire franchisee for community magazine, Raring2Go.
It’s a showcase for the region’s family products and services, and includes a comprehensive, well-thumbed what’s on guide.
The requirements perfectly matched her skills set – and she launched the magazine
Victoria – who is soon to open an office in Aberdeen’s Little Belmont Street and

commission a freelance designer and writer – hopes to extend circulation by up to 10,000 next year. “I get great feedback from parents and advertisers, and the response rate to our competitions is tremendous,” said Victoria, who not only acts as a consultant to the AECC, but is also mentor to 25 other magazine franchisees from Manchester north. Victoria is a finalist in the Alex Buchanan Smith Spirit of Enterprise category of the Grampian Enterprise Awards. E: Aberdeenshire@raring2go.co.uk www.raring2go.co.uk

From drab to fab This sad looking house in Cults was crying out for a make over!
New owners Gareth Innes and Fiona Suttie had the vision to transform this modest three-bedroom, two-bathroom house into a dream, spacious home, with an additional bedroom, five bathrooms, and a contemporary openplanned living space. While their new look home had to have all the attributes that would suit their young family, the couple were keen to take into account the environmental impact of the development. Having seen Leathan Property’s 36
advertisements in Trend, they invited the all-in-one development team to tender – and charged them with the complete project management of their new-look home, from conception to completion. “The house was tired and drab - the ugly duckling in a desirable area,” explained Leathan director, Tommy McCarthy. Architects Fitzgerald & Associates were also appointed to the project by Fiona and Gareth..
The team gave the villa a five-star makeover, using the highest standard of materials, hand crafted solid cedar windows, doors and cladding, automatic cedar garage door, Tatajuba brazilian decking for longer life, and stainless steel balustrades with toughened safety glass. Eco-friendly external finishes included a sarnafil flat roof membrane, giving higher insulation with longer lasting guarantees.
The Leathan team applied the very latest external render ďŹ nish, K Rend silicone range incorporating silicone water repellents as an integral part of the cement based render system. This silicone technology imparts a high degree of water repellency to the render surface whilst allowing water vapour to pass through the render, allowing the substrate to breathe. Look out for a walk-though of this gracious living space in the December/January issue of Trend.
This project was delivered ahead of schedule by Leathan Property. Tommy McCarthy oers home-owners embarking on a similar undertaking the following advice: - Plan what you want for your home well in advance, be realistic, and be prepared for a change in direction that may impact on budget and schedule. - Appoint a respected architect who understands your needs and leaves no stone unturned.
- Engage a contractor who will take responsibility for the project, overcome potential pit falls, and recognizes that dialogue with the client is imperative to the development’s success. T: 0706 100 11 99 E: info@leathanproperty.com www.leathanproperty.com

Northwood Aberdeen:
The property professionals > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
North-east landlords can be assured their property is in safe hands when they put their trust in Northwood. Northwood, in Aberdeen’s Rosemount Place, offers a high calibre range of services tailored to match the level of involvement a landlord wishes to have in the management of a rented property. “Our unique product is our ‘Platinum Guaranteed’ rental income scheme,” explained Northwood managing director, Steven Mearns, whose firm has an extensive portfolio of rental properties – from bed-sits to stately homes. “It offers landlords complete peace of mind and can take away the financial risk that can be associated with renting out a property.” 38
The no-obligation scheme offers landlords guaranteed rental income 12 months of the year, regardless of whether there is a tenant in the property. Northwood will tell a landlord at the outset how much they will pay over the 12 months of their contract – even if the property is vacant. The lettings agency also has a successful introduction service, in which they market a rental property, vet prospective tenants, conduct viewings, and draw up legal agreements and a full, photographic inventory. As part of the comprehensive service, Northwood will also check a tenant into the property at the commencement of the lease, and transfer utilities and council tax obligations to the tenant.
Alternatively, Northwood can be instructed to find a suitable tenant, and then leave the landlord to manage the rest of the rental process themselves. “We are happy to visit a property and advise landlords about how much they can expect to command in rental income,” said Steven, whose business operates a traditional commissionbased service for landlords who seek to take on more of the risk – and reap greater rewards. If you can prise yourself away from the shops, visit the Statue of Liberty in Lower Manhattan. For a few dollars you can take a boat over to Liberty Island, and now President Obama has relaxed security, you can once more go inside the famous lady’s crown for a unique view of New York. There are some fantastic views of New York from the Empire State Building. Different packages allow you to visit different floors, but the 86th floor and 1050 feet will be high enough for most people! Amongst other popular sights are the Chrysler Building, Ground Zero and Rockafeller Centre, complete with outdoor ice rink. If you fancy a show, head for Broadway and Times Square. If it’s tranquility you seek, a walk around Central Park takes you away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Or, if you’re a sports fan, see the New York Knicks at Madison Square Gardens. There’s something for everyone to enjoy on a trip to New York, and with so many restaurants, shops and landmarks around, you’ll never be short of anything to do or places it eat in a city that never sleeps.

21st Century Cocktalia... 2009 is the year of Scotland’s Homecoming, and one of the best things to come out of our fair country is Drambuie. The history of this drink spans back over 250 years and pretty much everyone’s drinks cabinet has a bottle, although it is mostly at the back gathering dust! The perception it has as a pensioners’ drink, that can only be enjoyed over ice, could not be more wrong; this whisky-based liqueur with heather honey has great mixability. Enjoy it with ginger beer, soda and lime, or try this really simple variation on a classic daiquiri that you can make at home: 50ml Drambuie, Juice of a whole lime & 2 teaspoons of clear honey Shake ingredients together with ice and then strain the contents into a martini glass. If you want something longer and a little more refreshing, strain it into a tall glass with ice, and add ginger ale. This drink shows how easy it is to make great drinks at home; the key is to use a few quality ingredients to bring out the best in the product. Slàinte mhath! Art for floors > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT
With the 1980s trend of bagging carpets in favour of the wooden floor, anyone with a nuance of interior design flair was shopping for rugs. Jean Moncrieff – a Gray’s School of Art graduate in textile design and weaving - was among them. Yet, the drab designs and inferior quality rugs she found in North-east stores fell short of her expectations and failed to inspire. “I thought I could do much better than that and started to do some research,” remembers Jean, whose needlepoint designs were then selling in prestigious shopping destinations, such as Harrods and Liberty of London. She was fascinated to discover that the craft of weaving was brought to Nepal by exiled Tibetans in the late 1950s/early 1960s. Jean made a trip to Kathmandu to visit a number of accredited weavers who work with high quality wool from sheep reared in the Tibetan mountains. She selected the most skilled to produce high wool-count 52
rugs to her individual, inspired designs. All colours are dyed exclusively, which makes each one of Jean’s rugs a oneoff. Styles range from traditional to minimalist, and she can work to a client’s own design or create a bespoke pattern to complement the appeal of a room. Working from her home in Aboyne, Jean’s designs adorn the floors and walls of palaces, hotels, galleries and private homes around the world. She and her suppliers are members of the Rugmark quality foundation, through which a percentage of her sales are returned to Nepal for the benefit of workers in the rug and carpet trade. The jewellery business has always been a labour of love for soul mates, Jacqui and Duncan Grant. The husband and wife team met while studying 3D design, specialising in jewellery, at Aberdeen’s Gray’s School of Art in 1989. “The only available seat in the department was next to Duncan – and the rest, they say, is history,” said Jacqui. Their personal and professional lives have been in tandem ever since. The pair worked together on the Rennie Mackintosh collection at Carrick in the ‘90s, before moving to Sandy Menzies, where Duncan was workshop manager and Jacqui had the role of senior designer/retail manager. 54
They launched contemporary Scottish jewellery specialist, Lava Jewellery, in 2006 – an enterprise that became a fulltime venture for the couple at the end of last year. Their distinctive and exclusive collections are strongly influenced by the Scottish landscape and the memories they evoke for Jacqui and Duncan. ‘Coastline’ immortalises a moonlit, beach front walk shared at Lossiemouth, while the Burns collection honours the bard in the year of the homecoming. At Continuum, a sister company of Aberdeen Appointments Agency, un-learning is equally as important as learning.

Training director, Andrew Burton: “Leadership behaviours are learned from experience, but sometimes they don’t fit
the current needs of the organisation. “We aim to motivate leaders and managers to consider what to un-learn from the behaviour that was instilled in them when they joined the industry. We encourage them to think and act in a more participative way, to examine their behaviour and explore how their leadership style affects their staff.” Using proven tools, Continuum also specialises in bespoke coaching, in which executives receive expert tuition to help them best handle the challenges facing their business. 461 Union Street Aberdeen AB11 6DB T: +44 (0)1224 211211 E: info@aaajobs.co.uk

MOTORING
PAGANI ZONDA
ADVERTORIAL
> WORDS BY DAVID GILLANDERS
It is almost impossible to describe the Zonda - you really have to see it in the flesh, as this truly is a Supercar in every way. For example, it weighs less than a Lotus Evora, 2750 lbs to be exact, and has a V12 Mercedes engine with over 600 bhp. At the touch of the throttle, because there is no weight in the car, there is no delay before the power arrives. The Zonda accelerates like a Formula One car and with its bubble canopy, shovel nose and rocket-like tail pipes, it turns heads like none other. Who cares what its 0 – 60 is, or its top speed – both are out of this world. What I find interesting is the background of the designer, Horacio Pagani. He originates from Argentina, the son of a 58
baker, and he probably would have carried on the family business had he not started to avidly read Auto magazines. He established his own small shop in 1977 and started to design and build car trailers and their suspensions. He was then asked to rebody a race car, as in his spare time he liked to work with fibre glass. Later he went on to design and build a racing car from scratch. This took him a year and, true to his name, the car came in at 88 lbs lighter than all the others in the same category. Fast forward to today: the Zonda’s interior has amazing attention to detail, e.g. every
stitch in the soft trim is precisely placed and tensioned. Although the Zonda drives like a racing car, getting in and out of the Zonda is relatively easy. Pagani is well aware that people of all shapes and sizes will wish to drive this car. Let’s face it, without Horacio there is no Zonda and if I tell you he works on every technical aspect of his car – he is chief stylist, chief engineer, chief executive and also head of public relations - he does truly put his heart and soul into the Zonda.

STAR LETTER Dear Trend, I picked up my first copy of you for the first time while in Vanity buying a dress for my Vegas wedding in November. I am totally hooked and can’t wait for the next one; you have lots of great features, competitions and most importantly it lets me know whats happening in Aberdeen. I enjoy eating out and reading restaurant reviews. As I am vegetarian it can be frustrating going to a restaurant with limited choices for vegetarians. It would be very helpful when reading reviews if it was metioned if they catered for vegetarians. I wonder if this is something you would consider when reviewing them in your magazine? Thank you. Dear Trend,
Dear Trend,
We thoroughly enjoyed our two-night break at the Torridon Hotel recently. On arrival we received a friendly welcome and once settled into our sumptuous room, we were invited to the drawing room for afternoon tea and homemade shortbread. Dinner was a five-course affair preceded by canapes with the food obviously lovingly created by the chef. Breakfast was another feast with a copy of the delightful ‘Daily Torridon News’ including weather forecast for the day. Guests included Scottish bikers, American and French couples all taken with the Scottish hospitality and surrounding scenery. I'm eager to pick up future issues of Trend and enter many more competitions!
I wish to thank Trend for reviving my social, dining and shopping habits. Since being introduced to Trend I have discovered cafe bars, restaurants and retailers, I was unaware even existed in Aberdeen. With every issue of Trend I have enjoyed a new experience, whether it be dining out with my husband or meeting up with friends for coffee, it's a breath of fresh air going somewhere different. I have most certainly discovered a new 'trend' which is most enjoyable. Eileen Robb Aberdeen

PROFILE SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND
Haste ye back > WORDS BY CAROL BROWN
The winding road along the south banks of Loch Tay leads to the door of the Ardeonaig Hotel and Restaurant. There has been an inn at Ardeonaig since 1649. South African chef/owner Pete Gottgens has combined the best of local produce with the influences of his homeland to provide a unique experience. The wine list is totally South African with some of the wines imported directly from small producers whom Pete knows personally. Sommelier James Payne is on hand to guide you with your choice. It was hard to pull ourselves away from our stylishly decorated junior suite in the garden cottage, but dinner called. While we opted to dine in the restaurant, there is also the option of the more casual cellar where you can savor the food, surrounded by wine.
We chose the gourmet menu, and each course was complemented with a chosen wine. Each dish was beautifully prepared and presented: Uig smoked salmon, Orkney scallops, lobster, hare (a first for me, delicately gamey and very tender), slow-cooked Ardeonaig lamb and a platter of small desserts. After a delicious breakfast in the study, it was time to say goodbye to the Ardeonaig - our new retreat. COMPETITION Ardeonaig has teamed up with Trend to offer readers a chance to win one night dinner bed & breakfast for two people. Competition closes on 20 November, and prize must be taken by 28 February 2010 (excluding weekends, Christmas/New Year & St Valentine’s Day). Send your answer to the following question with Ardeonig in the subject box, include your name, address and contact number to: info@trendmagazine.co.uk Name Ardeonaig’s sommelier.

Tranquility in the highlands
Close your eyes and picture clear blue waters drifting in across a beautiful, sandy beach. See families strolling along the boulevard laughing and enjoying the warmth of the mid-day sun and imagine every stress, strain and worry ease away on a gentle breeze. > WORDS BY SHARON HAWTHORNE
This is Nairn, just a two hour drive north of Aberdeen, not, as you may have been thinking, a haven in the Med. Nairn nestles perfectly on the Moray Firth and, as we sauntered along the shore to the Golf View Hotel for a delicious early supper and a glass of wine, my partner and I made plans for the weekend. The town is a short drive from many Highland attractions, two championship golf courses and the wooded beauty of Culbin Forest, so there was plenty to choose from.
We plumped for the Findhorn Foundation on Saturday and toured its interesting eco-village and holistic education centre before sipping a chai tea at the cafe. Then we drove into Findhorn village and ate fish and chips at the Kimberly Inn, which overlooks the bay, and watched the setting sun.
Augusta, where we sat in the sunshine and watched boats navigate the locks through to the Caledonian Canal, then back up along the north side to Urquhart Castle. The day ended wonderfully as we watched dolphins leap and dance through the water at Fortrose on the Back Isle.
On Sunday I fulfilled a long held dream when we visited Loch Ness and I wasn’t disappointed - it truly is a beautiful landscape. We drove along the more rugged south side of the Loch to Fort
Nairn proved to be a perfect base for our weekend and, after browsing through quaint gift shops and enjoying a morning coffee at Henry’s, I knew that it wouldn’t be long before I return.

MUSIC
Stanley > WORDS BY DAVID NICHOLSON Anyone who has taken an interest in the local music scene over the last number of years will know the name Stanley. This could be because: A) They’ve got a vibraphone player. B) And they’re one of the best bands the city has seen - an enviably capable and inventive band who seem to have an endless supply of talent and originality. C) A little from column A, a little from column B. Stanley are about to make waves in the music industry as they near completion of their debut album, entitled ‘Animals With Amazing Disguises’. The album has taken them two years to get to this point, although they’ve hardly been dragging their heels.
At the heart of the band is Steven Podlesny. Not just a gifted singer/songwriter, he’s also a talented recording engineer - something which is no small asset to the band and their future. He explains, “We recorded ‘Animals..’ ourselves. And we’re perfectionists. So we spent the last couple of years experimenting with different recording techniques and recording, experimenting, learning and rerecording over and over until we got it right.” For an example of this, go to www.myspace.com/iamstanley where you can listen to three tracks. The results are nothing short of stunning. All three are so cleverly arranged, so accomplished, so audacious that it’s hard to imagine they were
self-recorded in a rehearsal room near the harbour. There are definitely hints of The Divine Comedy in Stanley’s music –Podlesny’s intelligent lyrics, vocal range and tenor is reminiscent of Neil Hannon (..or Scott Walker) but their music has more of a creative edge, inviting further favourable comparisons with The Bad Seeds, Radiohead and Frank Zappa. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a band of their calibre, the rest of Stanley is comprised of an impressive array of talented musicians. Three members (co-founder and guitarist Paul Davidson, drummer Billy McBain and piano/vibes player Geoff Jones) are music teachers while bassist Ramsay Clark is a recognisable veteran of the Aberdeen scene. With a winter release due, Animals With Amazing Disguises is bound to attract serious attention from the music industry. It’s really that good. Now go and find out for yourself www/myspace.com/iamstanley Stanley play the Tunnels on 11th Oct.

with my eyeballs, and seeing through stuff. The only trouble would be having to wear your underpants on the wrong side of your trousers.

What's been the highlight of your literary career? Getting flown out to New Zealand and Australia earlier this year, where I got to drink lots of the local wine and eat lots of the local wildlife.
