The crocuses and daffodils are out and the new season is well and truly upon us, even if there does appear to be a slight blizzard outside as we put this issue of Trend to bed. It’s a time to branch out and try something or buy something new.

We’ve braved the cold to find the best new looks, tried gymnastics, explored near and far, and brought it all together for this issue. We’ve even discovered the best new plants for North-east Gardens.

Talking of gardens, the Trend Garden Party is fast becoming the recognised start of Aberdeen’s spring social season and all the tickets have already been sold. We’re really looking forward it and there’s been an awful lot of hat shopping going on.

Falling in love with the girl is easy, finding the ring to do her proud is the real challenge...

For an engagement ring is the most personal symbol of a couple’s commitment and should be as beautiful and unique as the girl whose hand it adorns.

So when Gayle Eynon and fiancé Blythe Majors started the search for the sparkler to seal their future together they knew it would be no ordinary quest. And they turned to the past for inspiration, ultimately linking three love stories in one to create a truly romantic piece with unrivalled provenance.

Gayle had been left the engagement rings of both her grandmothers, Mary and Isabel, and came up with the idea of incorporating the gems and their history into a new ring. But she found it difficult to find a jeweller to make her dream become reality.

Then she discovered Aubin Stewart of McCalls Jewellery in Aberdeen, a designer with vision and a love of 28

vintage. She understood the brief immediately and suggested designs based on an antique ring that Gayle adored on sight.

Aubin produced drawings, followed by a wax model of the ring, created

by McCalls in-house jeweller, that Gayle and Blythe approved before it was made up in 18ct white gold.

The result is a very special piece. A scalloped design with a vintage French feel, it features the original, midcentury gems – a solitaire and two stones from a twist – enhanced by additional diamonds on the shoulders.

The entire process took about five weeks, the final design eagerly awaited by Gayle. “It was definitely worth the wait to have something so unique, so personal and so beautiful.

My parents are really proud of the fact that stones have been brought back to life and are living on.”

They say that necessity is the mother of invention and for Laura Truscott that was certainly true.

When the 25-year-old mum failed to find hair accessories pretty enough for her gorgeous baby girl, she solved the problem by creating her own range.

Arriving with plenty of time for a leisurely lunch with the girls, we were greeted by an attractive and friendly waitress who showed us to our window table. Despite the conditions outside the restaurant was warm and welcoming, and we relaxed with a pre-lunch Prosecco in the elegant surroundings while perusing the menu.

The menu has a nice selection of starters, main courses and desserts but we opted for mains only, choosing between the Smoked Haddock Rarebit, Mascarpone and Herb Risotto and the Granite Park Open Burger was not easy but finally we made our choices, the table split between the 44

We had tickets for the matinee performance at HMT of The Full Monty on a very chilly Saturday, where to have a bite of lunch close by? We chose Granite Park, a hidden gem in the city’s Golden Square.

Rarebit and the Burger.

The waitress who served us was very attentive throughout the lunch and helped us choose two wines to go along with our lunch, a cheeky Pinot Grigio and a slightly spicy Rioja both complimented the food perfectly and were very flavoursome.

The Rarebit arrived and the presentation was impressive, with two large pieces of fish sitting on top of sautéed potatoes and wilted greens - a wonderful combination of flavours. The burger arrived on an open ciabatta roll, was topped with bacon and

cheese and accompanied by tomato relish and chunky chips...divine and just what was needed on a cold Saturday afternoon.

The table next to us had desserts which looked very tempting but we opted for coffee only on this occasion, but vowed to return for the ‘Full Monty’ next time as we enjoyed this restaurant immensely.

A visit to Meldrum House has always felt a little like visiting the home of a wealthy relative. It’s very familiar, and friendly staff make you feel completely at home which relaxes you from the minute you arrive.

On a snow covered March afternoon the drive through landscaped grounds to the main house was magical, almost like the set of a British rom-com movie.

We were greeted and shown through to the Drawing Room, where we sat in luxurious sofas in front of a roaring fire.

There we perused the extensive lunch menu while enjoying a glass of the hotel’s recommended Cabernet Sauvignon.

With such a variety of food on offer it was difficult to decide - it all sounded so delicious! Although tempted by the homemade Shepherd’s Pie and Crab Cakes we decided on the Meldrum House Steak Burger and the Club Sandwich – ultimate comfort food on a snowy afternoon. The soup special – a Haggis, Neeps & Tatties Vel oute was too intriguing not to try, so we ordered a bowl to share as a starter.

The soup was simply delicious, the rich ‘haggis neeps and tatties’ flavours were complimented by the smooth and delicate texture. Our lunch arrived soon after

and we weren’t disappointed. The steak burger was topped with melted cheddar cheese and bacon and was served with a tower of Meldrum House’s chunky, hand cut chips and tangy, home-made relish.

The club sandwich was equally impressive and was constructed of grilled chicken, omelette, bacon, baby leaves and tomato on toasted sourdough bread.

With no room left for dessert, despite being tempted by the Chocolate Fondant Caramel Ice Cream, we finished up with a drink by the fire. Mr P. deliberated over the extensive Whisky menu, but as we were in the home of one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries it felt only right to have the 12 year old Glen Garioch. A perfect way to end a fabulous eating experience at Meldrum House.

What made you decide to be a chef?

I’ve always been passionate about good food. As an Italian, food is very much part of our culture, with mealtimes being a chance for the whole family to spend some time together. My initial influence came from my home where my mother would teach me about using ingredients.

She inspired me and I later qualified at one of the top catering colleges in Italy.

Describe your cooking style I’d say that my dishes are modern Mediterranean cooking. I make food that is always fresh, healthy and tasty!

Born in Naples where pizza was invented, on a bay where the clear blue waters teem with fish and crustaceans, it’s no wonder that Ciao Napoli’s Peppe Lepre, grew up to be a chef.

If you invited a famous person to dinner, who would it be, why and what would you eat?

Sophia Loren, who is also from Naples, would be a fantastic guest. She once said that she owed everything she had to spaghetti. As well as being beautiful and glamorous, she has such exquisite taste, so for her I would cook absolutely anything she wanted!

Where do you look for inspiration for ideas?

I am always creating new ideas from traditional recipes. Food and people’s tastes are always evolving and changing, and I love to experiment with new ideas and ingredients. My wife and daughter are often the first to try a new dish. Our son’s only nine months old, so he’s a still bit too young to help.

What is the worst thing about modern restaurant cooking?

I know when I go out to eat I’m sometimes

disappointed by small portions and high prices!

What do you think about the Aberdeen restaurant scene? How has it evolved in the past few years?

It has changed a lot in recent years, and while competition is good for business, I believe there are too many food chains offering a very similar type of food that isn’t freshly prepared or original. Good food should be a celebration of the best seasonal produce, not something massproduced and microwaved.

Here’s Pepe’s recipe for Chargrilled tuna steak with balsamic vinegar glaze for two 2 tuna steaks 160g each 1 lime 2 large potatoes Maldon salt, black pepper 100 ml of extra virgin olive oil

1 spring of fresh rosemary 2 tbs of balsamic vinegar glaze 100g Parmesan shavings 50g wild rocket 1 lemon

Marinate the tuna in the lime juice, some salt, pepper, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and the rosemary. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Peel the potatoes, slice in round shapes and par cook, drain and cool under cold water.

Saute the potatoes in a hot pan with some of the oil, salt and pepper.

In the meantime, heat up a char-grill pan or frying pan Place the tuna in the hot pan and cook for approximately 1 minute each side, depending on the thickness of the steak. The tuna should be served pink in the middle.

Drizzle the plate with the balsamic glaze, place the potatoes on the plate, slice the tuna steak and place on top of the potatoes, topped with wild rocket, parmesan shavings, lemon wedges and drizzle over the remaining olive oil.

In 1308, King Robert the Bruce declared Inverurie a Royal Burgh. Since that time, it has continued to go from strength to strength.

Though the Inverurie we see today is a modern market town with all the amenities, this is a town steeped in history, the signs of which can still be seen all around if you know where to look. From the War Memorial in the centre of town to the monument commemorating the Battle of Harlaw, there are reminders everywhere that this town sacrificed a lot on its way to becoming what it is today.

Inverurie owes much of its early success to its link with Aberdeen via the Aberdeen Canal and later via the Great North of Scotland Railway. The introduction of trains in 1854 made Inverurie a strategically important junction for many intersecting branch lines and it even boasted its own locomotive works, a source of such pride that the local football club is named in its honour.

Ultimately, though, Inverurie owes its current success to the one thing that it gained when the oil boom came to the North Sea â&#x20AC;&#x201C; people. With over ten thousand residents, retailers and businesses have flocked to Inverurie and the result is a town that offers everything from formalwear to football boots and all that comes in between.

With its tiny harbour, picturesque cottages and annual Fish Festival, there are plenty of reasons to while away a pleasant afternoon in Johnshaven, but one of the most compelling is Starfish Studio, the creative home of textile artist, painter and passionate supporter of British crafts, Kate MacKenzie.

She shared her creative approach with us...

lots of hand stitching to create trees, fences, sheep etc. I’ve also recently started weaving on a small hand frame, and found this an incredibly enjoyable way of working.

“I’ve always loved sewing, especially hand sewing, and many years ago I set up my own small company designing cross stitch kits. I was limited in my ability to promote them as I was working full time as a primary teacher.

I gave up my career in 1997 when my first daughter was born, and the family moved to Johnshaven almost a decade ago, when my husband and I bought the village shop. We were warmly welcomed by the villagers and it’s now hard to imagine ever living anywhere else. A few years ago, we bought the building next to our house which meant I could turn my long-cherished dream of opening my own shop selling British made, affordable art and craft, and having a permanent outlet for my own work,” Kate enthused.

“I have no formal training, but have had a love of textiles from a very young age. My gran was a seamstress, and she always encouraged and helped me to make things from her enormous scraps box.

“I get bored easily so I like to use a variety of techniques and styles. My work is mostly abstract, although I do enjoy creating small landscapes by combining textiles, paint and adding

As well as working with textiles, Kate is a talented painter. “I work in bright acrylics, often using buildings as a focal point. I’m fascinated by history, and have a real love for castles which is why they feature prominently in my work. I’m always happy to discuss painting or textile commissions.

“Johnshaven certainly has a large number of creative people, many of whom participate in North East Open Studios. I guess it’s the peace and quiet and the inspiration provided by the constantly changing sea. Sometimes it’s hard not to be distracted by the beautiful view of the sea from my sewing room!

“I meet a lot of customers who are inspired by what they see in the shop. I’d urge anyone who has always fancied trying a new skill to ‘give it a go’ - what have you got to lose?”

t was family that first lured me to Cambridge in 2007 but since discovering this vibrant and cultured city, it has become a regular destination in our annual family calendar. With so much on offer, you really can keep going back and never run out of things to do.

From Aberdeen, you can travel to Cambridge by car or train without too much hassle but if you’re looking for a weekend break and can’t afford the time, flying into London and driving the painless 60 miles up the M11 means you are door to door in just a few hours. There are enough hotels to suit every taste and every budget but this city will keep you so busy, you will only need your hotel for sleeping anyway.

If shopping is your sport, Cambridge will keep you active whether you’re looking for Primark or Prada. The Grand Arcade is the city’s newest and grandest shopping centre, with all the names you know and love under one roof. But for a truly unique shopping experience, you must save a day for Burwash Manor, where you will find a collection of independently owned shops and cafés housed within a range of converted farm buildings and offering everything from children’s clothing to organic produce.

If you are more of a culture vulture, Cambridge will not disappoint. There are galleries and museums showcasing the full spectrum of art styles and because the people of Cambridge have a penchant for the performing arts, you can fill your evenings watching interpretive dance, ABBA cover bands or Shakespeare or anything in between. If London’s West End is still the only theatre for you, it is worth noting that you can reach London in under an hour on the direct train.

However you choose to fill your time in Cambridge, you mustn’t leave without partaking in this historic city’s most famous pastime – punting down the River Cam. Introduced in the early 1900s, punting involves standing rather precariously in a flat-bottomed boat attempting to navigate the river with nothing more than an unwieldy and exceptionally long pole. Once you realise you are not going to tip, it is actually great fun and a fantastic way to take in some of the spectacular architecture that Cambridge has on offer.

Local portrait painter Stephanie Vandem draws on her training as a costume designer to paint portraits which capture the very essence of the sitter...

Looking at Stephanie Vandem’s portraits, it’s obvious that she’s mastered one of the most difficult of all forms of painting.

Her works go beyond capturing a mere physical likeness, to reflecting the personality of her subjects, whether they be adults or children. We found out how she does it...

Forget your iPod and stow away your tablet, because vinyl is making a serious comeback. Sales of records are soaring as more people discover the richness of analogue sound. Many artists release their latest work on vinyl, so now’s the time to dust off those old records and rediscover the joy of the LP. Modern turntables are precision-engineered pieces of kit, with prices from a couple of hundred pounds for a decent entry-level machine, to topend set ups costing rather more than some flats on ASPC! There’s a market for vintage machines as well as pre-owned records.

Many records also include codes for digital downloads - giving fans the best of both worlds. At around £20 for a new album, vinyl is pricier, but then silk costs more than polyester.

Locally, check out Holburn Hi-Fi for informed advice, a good selection and the expertise to refurbish vintage turntables.

There are plenty of online suppliers, but this is one purchase where you need to hear what you’re buying. The Cavern on Belmont Street is Aberdeen’s best option for vinyl.

Pro-Ject offer great entry-level design-led machines, which both look and sound great. The depth and richness of the sound compared to a CD or MP3 is genuinely astounding.

To reach Huntly Castle, you must first pass under the imposing arch of the Simpson Building, which is a Jacobean construction so much a part of days gone by, it immediately transports you to another place and time. As you carry on further

down the tranquil tree-lined avenue, Huntly Castle comes into view and you can almost feel the rumblings from this striking ruin of a past so tumultuous, it captures the imagination of historians and architects alike.

Starting its life as a wooden structure built by the Earl of Fife in the late 1100s, Huntly Castle was originally known as the Peel of Strathbogie. In the years that followed, the site became a stronghold for the Gordon family whose influence and opulence was so coveted the Castle was alternately burned down, knocked down and blown up by people as powerful as Mary Queen of Scots. Each time, the reaction from the Gordon family was to build an even more elaborate and lavish home, resulting ultimately in a great palace, the only thing left standing today.

Built in a prominent, elevated position and surrounded by a battalion of trees, Huntly Castle brings new meaning to the phrase ‘if the walls could speak.’ These walls virtually shout out, with the names and titles of inhabitants long gone, carved high on the palace wall and an elaborate frontispiece over the main entrance displaying symbols of all that was important to them – from family, to King, to God.

The interior is but a shadow of its former greatness, but what remains tells the story of a family so powerful, even James VI felt threatened by them. From the intricately carved mantelpieces to the graffiti in the prison pit, it is a struggle to imagine what it was like to call this architectural triumph your home. But it sure is fun to try.

Like a lot of girls her age, my daughter spent a large part of the past summer rearranging the furniture in our sitting room to create a makeshift London 2012 gymnastics arena in which she could perform Beth Tweddle-esque routines in front of an imaginary panel of judges.

To get your itinerary started, a visit to Waterstone’s is highly recommended. We spent some time recently in the Travel Writing section, and can highly recommend the following…

Around India in 80 Trains by Monisha Rajesh This book is the antithesis of your average travel guide, which is what makes it such an enjoyable read. A witty chronicle of the author’s 40,000km journey across India on the intricate Indian Railway system, this book gives you a real flavour for the country, its people, and the oldest, most romantic means of travel. Even if you’re not planning a visit to India, this book is a great ride.

Twitchhiker by Paul Smith This book is so far from the norm, it is off the scale. Twitchhiker follows the harebrained journey of a man determined to travel from Newcastle to a small island near New Zealand in thirty days using nothing but the kindness of followers on Twitter. Smith sets himself five rules that must followed throughout, the final one being that he must give up if he is unable to move on from a location within 48 hours. Madcap doesn’t even begin to describe the adventure that follows. It is unlikely that anyone will use this as a handbook on travel, but it is a very funny read that leaves you feeling comforted that people this frivolous do exist.

Three Things You Need To Know About Rockets by Jessica Fox This book is part memoir, part travel log. Jessica Fox was a 26-year old filmmaker living in Hollywood who decided one day to give everything up and follow her dreams – to Scotland. AFC Ladies Day

Aberdeen Football Club welcomed over 400 guests to Pittodrie for the second Ladies Day event of this season and to celebrate the occasion they joined forces with VSA. They added a touch of glamour to the match-day experience as they wrapped up the thrills and spills of 90 minutes on the pitch. Trendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Life with Style Awards 2013 was officially launched at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa. Over 100 people attended the launch where the heard from the head judge Eileen Mauchline and last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winner of the Divine Dining, Restaurants and Bistros category, Chris Tonner of Beetroot Restaurants. Guests enjoyed a live performance by the Velvet Five Band and a series of silent and live auctions offering luxury items. The event raised ÂŁ136,000 to support JDRFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.

GOLDEN BOY TIM RULES THE WAVES > WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

The lunchtime crowd at the John Lewis Espresso Bar in Aberdeen could not believe their eyes. Here was Westhill’s very own Olympian Tim Baillie holding up his gold medal in an exclusive photo for Trend readers. Customers wanted to touch it and all were amazed at just how heavy it was.

Tim Baillie? Yes, he is not exactly a household name but he should be, because he and his canoe slalom partner Etienne Stott, now entering their ninth season in the C2 class, defied the odds to triumph in front of 12,000 spectators at the Lee Valley White Water Centre last August. “We had got our place in the final as the sixth and last qualifiers which meant we went off first in that final,” said Tim. “Slovakian twins Pavel and Peter Hochschorner, who are like rock stars in their country, were hot favourites to retain their title but the time we set was never bettered and they had

to settle for bronze behind another British pair, David Florence and Richard Hounslow.”

Tim and Etienne, who gets his name from his French-Canadian mother, were bitterly disappointed to miss out on qualifying for the Beijing Olympics.

“That acted as a tremendous spur for us for all the training we did at Holme Pierrepoint National Watersports Centre near Nottingham,” said Tim, whose mum and dad Christine and Ken, met at Aberdeen University Canoe Club.

The former Westhill Academy pupil, who turns 34 on 11 May, has enjoyed

Lottery funding and also support from an old school pal, Andrew Strachan of Norse Ltd, but what does the future hold for Nottingham-based Tim, who also has a degree in mechanical engineering? “Etienne and I are back in training for the world championships in Prague in September,” he said. “Thereafter, who knows?”

Tim’s Canadian girlfriend, Sarah Boudens, who is an Olympic kayaker, will no doubt have a big say in deciding what they do but for sure he will always cherish August 2, 2012, and the MBE that followed that golden day.
