One in three of us have varicose veins and many will be all too familiar with the problems of swollen, tired and heavy legs. For others it is the appearance of the varicose veins, preventing them wearing shorts or skirts that is the most immediate problem. In an unfortunate few, skin changes and even chronic ulceration may develop. Stuart Suttie, consultant at the Aberdeen Clinic says, ‘Varicose veins are amongst the most common reasons for patients come to see me as a vascular surgeon, but it is seldom that I need to use an operation to treat them, we are able to treat large veins with radiofrequency ablation techniques and smaller veins with ultrasound guided injection of foam. These techniques have revolutionised the recovery from varicose vein treatment’.
All the unsightly veins have gone and I no longer feel selfconscious wearing shorts, I was back running after a week... The Aberdeen Clinic is now also able to offer the tissue glue occlusion technique to treat veins after the recruitment of Mr. Siddique, one of Scotland’s most experienced vein surgeons.
Patient experiences like above are now common after modern minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins but were unheard of just a few years ago when treatment was limited to surgery and support stockings.
The multi-disciplinary team at the Aberdeen Clinic has the expertise to help patients select the optimal treatment for their varicose veins.
For more information or to book an appointment call: 0333 0143 488 or email veins@theaberdeenclinic.co.uk
Patients can benefit from a ‘walk-in walk-out' treatment delivered by a specialist consultant at the Aberdeen Clinic. Varicose vein problems can be a thing of the past after undergoing a simple out-patient procedure.

Samantha Cardno
It’s been six months since the fabulous opening party at Rebecca Carr Hair Salon. In that time, the luxury salon in Kintore has built up an impressive clientele from all over the North-east due to its fantastic reputation and professional approach towards styling, cutting and colouring. Rebecca explained, ‘From the start, I set out to offer a level of services, creative and technical standards and the kind of ambience usually found in upmarket city salons. I also wanted us to be approachable, with a friendly team and offering our clients value for money. Many regulars come from Aberdeen as it is only a 10 minute drive away with the added bonus of free parking right outside’.
princess up-do and hot chocolate with marshmallows are always popular’. Bex’s GlamBar offers in-house make up for special occasions, bridal parties, proms or a night out.
Rebecca added, ‘Our make-up artist, Samantha Cardno offers great advice and lessons in highlighting your best features and keeping your look up to date. This has been so popular that we’ve just launched a pop-up make up studio/touch up bar which can be booked for special events. This works so well, if we’ve done guests’ hair and make up for the day, we can now be on hand to keep the fairytale going, ensuring that no matter where you are or what you are doing, you look flawless!'
As the salon’s customer base has grown, Rebecca and her team have added extra services. Mini Bex’s Boutique lets children aged 4-12 celebrate with a tailored party package in the salon for four to eight

There are seven deadly sins, and we have to admit that we’ve suffered quite a few of them while putting the August/September issue of Trend together for you. No wrath or greed, but we’ve certainly lusted after some of the clothes in our Country Life fashion shoot and now we’d quite like our own estates, complete with castles and turrets, or perhaps our own island like Eriska or Barra. Gluttony? We’ve been out and about trying chocolate making, sampling restaurants and interviewing chefs to get the scoop on the season’s best produce. Envy? Just a wee bit, when it came to some of the sheds and hideaways featured on the books pages and the talents of the fashion students at RGU in our design feature. Even sloth gets a look in, since we tested some fitness gadgets for people who hate exercise! Our main sin, however, is pride. We’re proud of our city and all the North-east has to offer. We’re proud
of our rich heritage and amazing countryside. We’re proud of all our Life With Style Award winners, who represent the best of our independent retailers - from hair care to the best bars and restaurants. We’re proud that there’s always something new to do - new places to go, to play, to explore, to stay and to enjoy life, as well as our well-loved favourites.
LOUISE CARNEGIE Louise splits her time between Aberdeen and Glasgow, mainly working on fashion editorials or with agencies. She works closely with many up and coming designers and fellow creatives from the Aberdeen area which she thoroughly enjoys as there is so much hidden creativity up here that deserves to be seen.
We’re proud of the way people pull together to help those less fortunate. We’ve been catching up with various charity events on our Society pages and discovering more about worthwhile organisations like the Grampian Youth Orchestra and the Denis Law Legacy Trust StreetSports project which helps disadvantaged young people across Aberdeenshire. Read on and discover it for yourself. We have so much to enjoy here, so much to be proud of!

SIXPAD AbsFit
QardioBase
There are those of us who find treadmills a treat and think an early morning workout is the best part of the day. Then there are those of us - I like to think of us as the sane ones - who prefer a no sweat approach to fitness… If you hate exercise, try the Flexxicore Challenger. It’s an automated Whole Body Vibration or Biomechanical Oscillation machine - so it shoogles about from side to side and vibrates while you do some exercises or dance around on it. Adopt loose clothing as you may look like a marshmallow being electrocuted during the faster bits! There are three pre-set exercise programmes or you can use your own settings. It shakes you fitter, faster, with minimal effort on your part. It’s easy to use and takes just 10-20 minutes. Available from www.flexxicore.com If you’d rather develop a six pack, then give the SIXPAD AbsFit a go. It’s a discrete Japanese EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) machine that’s made of a very flexible silicone and uses gel pads to adhere
to the body. As well as the Abs Fit, there’s a smaller version called the Body Fit, which can be used on arms, thighs or the abdomen. You could even wear it to the office, as long as you have a plausible explanation for beeping each time the machine reaches the end of its cycle! www.sixpad.uk or 0800 138 0891 for details. Admittedly the QardioBase won’t get you any fitter, but this set of high tech scales will analyse your body composition, track your hydration levels and let you know if you’re losing weight or just water. It does everything to help you get fit except nag! It’ll look good in any bathroom and if you’d rather not see the numbers, it can show you a smiley or frowning face depending on your progress. www.getqardio.com

THE AESTHETIC ROOM: NEW LASER TECHNOLOGY FOR TATTOO REMOVAL... Louise and Ellen at The Aesthetic Room have responded to the increasing demand for tattoo removal by introducing the first Clinical Derma Q-Switched laser in town. Unlike some surgical, chemical and other treatments available, it is now possible to remove all shades of ink, including stubborn oranges and yellows - eradicating the signs of a misspent youth! Louise has extensive experience of laser tattoo removal and is hugely impressed by the new machine, saying, 'The Clinical Derma laser makes tattoo removal simple. After a free consultation, we can remove unwanted tattoos using the laser to fire a beam of light through the skin in extremely short pulses. This allows the gradual and natural bodily removal of the pigment over a series of treatments. As a guide, most Indian ink amateur tattoos should respond with between three and ten treatments. Coloured professional tattoos usually take between eight and twelve treatments. In general, our costs range from £50 to £400 per treatment per tattoo, though if more than one tattoo is being removed a discount may apply.
Ellen added, 'During a treatment session, which can last from five minutes to an hour, we cool the skin to minimise stinging and the minor discomfort that some clients experience. It’s important that the treated area should be protected from the sun. We recommend the use of sun block before, during and for six months after the period over which the tattoo is being removed and the use on sunbeds is prohibited.' Both Ellen and Louise are fully qualified to offer this new form of laser tattoo removal treatment.
TREATMENTS AVAILABLE AT THE AESTHETIC ROOM: > Microblading > Facial line softening injections > Dermal fillers > Skin rehydration treatment > Hyperhidrosis > Dermal roller > Microdermabrasion > Skin renewal peel
Louise continued, 'Laser treatment is considered to be the safest method of tattoo removal. The Q-Switched lasers are part of a new generation which neither burn nor cut the skin’s surface. They have been used extensively in medical practice for a number of years and The Aesthetic Room at The House is one of the few aesthetic centres in the UK to offer this treatment.'

SEASONAL EATING WITH CRAIG WILSON THE KILTED CHEF OF EAT ON THE GREEN This is the best time of year for game, yet so many of us are nervous of cooking it. Traditionally venison, pigeon and rabbit were popular in the Northeast due to their affordability and abundance. These days, your butcher can supply many types of game and some supermarkets also offer game birds, such as grouse, partridge and quail, in season. Wild or farmed venison is a good option for the inexperienced game cook as you can treat prime cuts like a fillet of beef or slow cook cheaper cuts in a casserole.
Why not ask your butcher for a ready diced game pie mix? Just add some smoked paprika for a warming aroma, or a few dried juniper berries, then pair with Autumn roasted root vegetables, a flaky pastry lid and a mound of buttery mash for a weekend treat.

Sumptuous, elegant, and divine.... and that’s just the building.
The Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel’s stately splendour has long been a hit for couples looking for a beautiful backdrop to their wedding, but the estate is also home to some seriously fine dining. The Tapestry Restaurant, so called because of the wonderfully bright drapes that adorn the walls, has had something of an overhaul, having recently welcomed a new first-rate chef and with it a revamped menu of carefully thought out dishes that show off the chef’s creative flair.
My date for the evening, my husband, and I began our culinary journey with pre-starter appetizers consisting of olives and homemade bread dipped in olive oil. Served with a lovely and fruity glass of rosé wine, it went particularly well with the beautifully prepared scallops and asparagus tips starter. My main of risotto with spinach and red pepper with balsamic roasted cherry tomatoes and crisps of parmesan was light and fresh, unusually so for a dish renowned for being a little heavy. Likewise,

the main of halibut was a good sized portion, soft and dusted with just the right amount of seasoning, and served with chunky wedges of chorizo. Although it was a school night I couldn’t turn down a dessert that had tequila in it. The iced tequila and lime parfait dessert with raspberry sorbet was indeed naughty but it was more than nice. The accompanying mini cherries drenched in fruit brandy weren’t to my liking, but who cared when the sorbet was so good. Not much of a sweet tooth, my husband tucked into his own dessert of Arran ice cream, served with perfect little pieces of rich dark chocolate. After three lovely courses, he struggled to finish his final dish, but I managed to help him out. That’s what wives are for, right? When I think about a public ornamental garden, I can’t help but visualise a herbaceous border in full bloom against a hot wall. So how did the concept of the herbaceous border evolve?
Gardening in Scotland is recorded as being practised from as early as the 15th century, but this was enjoyed by the very wealthy, royalty and monastic establishments only. The humble beginnings of the herbaceous border in Scotland is described as an ‘ornamental display within walled enclosures’ to be found in such as places as Drum and Fyvie Castle around the 16th century, but few survived intact. Scotland’s first gardening book, published in 1683 was John Reid’s The Scots Gardn’er in which he summarised the need for order and discipline in gardens and a century later, Scotland’s great designed landscape improvement programme was well established, reflecting the trend for naturalistic landscapes. By the 19th century, Scotland had become a proud nation of gardeners, but it was wealth created during the Industrial Revolution that saw the establishment of town and country house estate gardens as we know them today. John Claudius Loudon wrote the influential Encylopaedia of Gardening in
1822, outlining the fashions of the day and promoting the development of ‘gardenesque’ and woodland gardening. It was during the Arts and Crafts period in the late 19th century that the influence of designers such Gertrude Jekyll can be found in a number of National Trust for Scotland gardens and in particular in the development of the herbaceous border. Jekyll demonstrated so adeptly what could be achieved in her own in her garden at Munstead Wood, where the herbaceous

borders were in excess of 300 feet long and stunning, it is hardly surprising that she created such a strong influence. Herbaceous borders continue to be perennial-dominant as laid out by Jekyll, but have also been developed by designers such as James van Sweden and Piet Oudolf, following the idea of a ‘perennial meadow’ first outlined in the 1930s by a German nurseryman called Karl Foerster. Here, there are fewer species planted but in
Today you can travel to any of our wonderful National Trust for Scotland gardens around the North-east of Scotland, or visit the gardens within the Scottish Gardens Scheme, and you are sure to be treated to a magnificent display of mixed herbaceous perennials, carefully planted into a border in a scheme that provides wonderful colour, texture and scent when in full bloom. Graham Thom of the Denis Law Legacy Trust and Development Officer Mark Williams of Streetsport, share how the project is helping to change the lives of youngsters in the city... 'The Denis Law Legacy Trust was set up to give young people in the city free access to sport and other creative activities, and to help disadvantaged young people achieve positive destinations in life. Graham Thom explained 'Denis Law rose from humble Aberdeen beginnings to become the most deadly striker that Scotland has ever produced and an iconic footballer revered and loved throughout the football world. The Trust wishes to use Denis as an example of what can be achieved by hard work and dedication. 'The charity’s work with the Streetsport project delivers ten programmes of activity, each dedicated to improving and enhancing aspects of the lives of young people throughout Aberdeen. The overall aim is to support and empower young people to be confident,

Like many Aberdonians, I’m fairly well travelled. A combination of work and holidays has taken me all the way from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe, yet I’ve never really explored my own country. I know the North-east well - except the hilly or snowy bits - and I’m familiar with the best shopping streets and galleries of many of our cities. I’ve even spent an amazingly chilly few days poking around the rich archaeology of the Orkney Isles, but much of the Highlands, West Coast and Hebridean islands remains uncharted territory. The triple threat of poor weather, high costs and particularly vicious midges meant Scotland’s west coast never really reached the top of my must visit list, despite Instagram-perfect scenery.
Getting to Barra takes a while. You can fly in from Glasgow, landing on the beach at Traigh Mhor, though arrivals are subject to the tides. Our dog was coming with us and we wanted a more relaxed long weekend, so we opted to drive cross-country to Oban, meandering down the site of Loch Tay and through the Trossachs, before taking the Caledonian McBrayne ferry over to the island. Unfortunately, some technical issues with the ferry meant our sailing was moved up from early afternoon to unsociably early. When we arrived at the ferry terminal at 6.30am,

we discovered the sailing had been moved again to the afternoon, so we headed up the coast, discovering the tranquil setting of Dunstaffnage Castle and strolling in Port Appin, before finding a café offering great homemade scones and hot chocolate. As the ferry sailed serenely past Mull, Coll and a host of tiny islets, we were surprised to find there were great on board facilities for dogs, generously portioned comfort food in the café and a crew that seemed to be dedicated to being both helpful and entertaining. Don’t expect Barra to offer 5* boutique hotels or sophisticated shopping. Aside from a small toffee factory and a heritage centre that hadn’t yet opened for the season, we found a Co-Op, a craft gallery and a community shop. This probably explains why our souvenirs consisted of two potted Barra primroses and a large jar of dried wild mushrooms. There are some luxurious self-catering cottages, but these are often booked up a year ahead in summer.
We opted to stay at the Castlebay Hotel, a TripAdvisor favourite which was both dog and people-friendly and featured a good restaurant. We also loved the airport café for freshly baked scones and the delightfully eccentric and slightly surreal Café Kisimul, possibly the only Indian-Italian fusion restaurant in the country. It sounds off-putting, but it’s ranked as one of the 50 best curry houses in the UK, thanks to the scallop pakoras and monkfish masala. At times, Barra itself seemed quite surreal. For starters, there’s a castle slap bang in the middle of the bay, everything is gloriously unpolished and there are over twenty deserted white sand beaches, complete with
shells, dunes, azure seas and the kind of blue skies that make you feel you’ve gone back to the dawn of time, or been transported to another country. It’s so natural, unspoilt and peaceful even the midges decided not to bother us. Had it been 20 degrees warmer, Barra would have resembled the Caribbean. It’s made us want to discover more of our own country and we will certainly return to Barra. It’s the perfect place to get away from the pressures of everyday life. www.calmac.co.uk operate over 25 car and passenger ferry routes including the Hebrides, Firth of Clyde islands and Hopscotch Island hopping tickets.

We have another serious case of Prize Envy in the office. One lucky reader and their guest will be heading off to the luxurious 5* hotel on the Isle of Eriska for a two night break and a three course dinner on this fabulous private island. The winner will need to arrange their own travel and pay for drinks and any activities booked. The Isle of Eriska is a family run hotel and a member of Relais & Chateaux; located just off the west coast of Scotland, two hours north of Glasgow. The hotel features designer rooms, luxury suites and two Hilltop Reserves designed to blend in with the beautiful surroundings and be as ‘green’ and sustainable as possible. Alongside the hotel, there is the newly refurbished Stables Spa, two restaurants and a 9-hole golf course. Nature abounds on the island; if you’re lucky, you may spot some of the resident otters, badgers, golden eagles and red deer while out and about. The hotel even allows well-behaved dogs to stay.
The Isle of Eriska has a fabulous reputation for dining, with headchef Paul Leonard ensuring as much possible is locally sourced from sea vegetables and berries, to wild hips, mushrooms and naturally growing herbs from the hotel’s own garden. These ingredients are sustainably used in both the Michelin-starred Dining Room and less formal Deck Restaurant. Eriska’s chefs source meat from local butchers, smoke their own salmon, keep quail and pigs on the island and even land the odd fish for dinner themselves. As children, we dreamt of glamorous jobs and dream cars. We wanted to be cowboys, pop-stars, ballerinas, spacemen, jet fighter pilots, princesses, to have our own pony, be a vet and win LeMans. We doodled long, low-slung convertibles and had posters of screaming yellow Lamborghini and shiny red Ferraris blu-tacked to the wood chip. Ah the glamour! There’s little call for a ballerina who can handle a fighter jet in today’s job market, but that doesn’t mean all your childhood ambitious should be cast aside. Consider if you will, the Maserati Ghibli - a four-door sports executive saloon which combines breath-taking design and exceptional handling qualities with outstanding performance. It’s practical enough for everyday use; the children will fit in the back and there’s even room for the weekly shop or your golf clubs. The Ghibli appeals to all the senses, making the dream of owning a Maserati more accessible. In line with Maserati’s long tradition of naming cars after winds, the name 'Ghibli' originates from hot and dry, dustbearing desert wind descending from the interior highlands of Libya toward the Mediterranean Sea, especially in spring and early summer.
The first Maserati Ghibli, different in concept from today’s car, was launched in 1967 as a two door, two-seater grand tourer with a V8 engine and 330 hp. The Maserati Ghibli II appeared in 1992, with a 2.0 l V6 engine and 306 hp - the highest hp/litre output ever at the time. Today’s Maserati Ghibli range offers unmistakable class, top-quality performance and a fun - yet comfortable - drive in an eye-catching saloon. There are two petrol models and, in a first for the marque’s hundred year history, there’s even a 275 horsepower diesel variant. All versions of the Ghibli are fitted with the same ZF AT8 - HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission, also installed on the Quattroporte. There are five dedicated shift modes: Auto Normal, Auto Sport, Manual Normal, Manual Sport and I.C.E. mode. The car’s perfectly balanced weight distribution and five EURO NCAP stars in collision testing, make it a joy to drive, safe in the knowledge that it is amongst the top rated performance cars for safety. While the Ghibli features all the elegance of Maserati’s classic designs, its exterior emphasizes its sporty personality. The side profile is dominated by the swage lines, running from the unmistakable Maserati air vents and - for would-be jet pilots the interior features a sophisticated and well-crafted cockpitinspired dashboard design. Key elements such as the 8.4” Maserati Touch Control (MTC) and the optional combination of the finest leather with Zegna Mulberry Silk inserts underline the cabin’s timeless sporting character.. Optional features include the 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins high end audio system, WLAN based wifi and a wide range of customization options inclding WLAN and Siri, catering for the most demanding individuals. So, whether you wanted to be a cowboy or a princess, maybe it’s time to fulfil at least one of your childhood dreams. Move on up to a Maserati. www.parks.uk.com/maserati

Orchestra Manager Scott Matheson celebrates the first ten years of the Grampian Youth Orchestra... Grampian Youth Orchestra was originally formed for the Aberdeen International Youth Festival and has grown to become one of the most important music ensembles in the region. Neil Meldrum and Les Innes guided the orchestra though the early years, until I took over in 2012. We’ve just returned from our 10th Anniversary Tour of Germany, Holland and Belgium, with 79 musicians on stage. GYO is open to local orchestral musicians at Associated Board grade 7/8 level who are aged from 12 - 22. Those working towards these grades are encouraged also to apply. Playing as part of a classical orchestra is fantastic for young musicians as it allows them to work alongside other players their own age and level. It also greatly enhances their team work skills and musicianship as they strive to achieve a really high standard in the concerts. It’s also wonderful to see these players make new friendships.
We have a superb team of dedicated tutors for our rehearsals at Hillview Community Church in Cults. For 2017, we have a Concerto Competition to find a performing soloist. Applications for this and to join the orchestra open in August 2016, with auditions in November. We’re fortunate to receive sponsorship and financial support from several donors as well as Aberdeen City Council. Despite this, the orchestra still requires financial help and would love to hear from potential donors. We are also happy to discuss performing at corporate or private events in the future. Members of the orchestra have already performed for events hosted by AIYF and Offshore Europe and we are really making our mark as one of the most influential music establishments in the region. Applications for GYO open every year in August with auditions taking part in November. Application forms can be downloaded at grampianyouthorchestra. weebly.com.

RGU fashion and textile designers see their degree collections hit the runway

Josie Steed, Fashion and Textile design course leader for Fashion & Textile Design at Gray's School of Art, RGU shares what happens behind the curtains as this year’s graduates show their final year collections… ‘Fashion today is without doubt one of the most creative and dynamic influences which affects all aspects of our lives culturally, politically, economically and socially’, Josie mused, ‘We are all touched by it.
are resolved before the final pieces are then made into a six outfit collection for the catwalk. Fashion illustrations and photoshoots made into lookbooks finalise the collection for each student’s graduate portfolio.
‘This is the only course in Scotland that allows students to work on a combined programme where they can investigate both garment design and textiles. They develop a unique range of skills where they can choose how they wish to specialise, either within Fashion, Textiles or a combination of both. During the course, students work on industry-linked projects, European exchanges, internships, competitions and external events, while staff support students as they acquire technical and commercial skills including working with knit, print, mixed media, fashion illustration, garment construction,
‘Preparation for the show starts at the beginning of the academic year in September for the show in late May. Staff and students work together as part of the fashion show committee which includes students at all stages of the course. A lot of work goes into fund raising as the show costs in the region of £10,000 a year to stage. Students work hard to fund raise through a wide range of means from hosting club nights, bake sales, raffles, and corporate sponsorship. My colleague Salmena Carvahlo oversees the whole event. Once fittings are scheduled, model scouting and auditions take place. Local make-up
pattern cutting and professional practice. At the end of the course, we have 30-40 graduates taking part in the fashion show. ‘For their final collections, students develop their concept or idea starting point. This is incredibly diverse, taking inspiration from everything from mental health and asylums, to exploring clothing as gender related, to examining our relationship between tactile materials and autism, or patterns found in geology and minerals. The students then develop their research to visually translate and articulate their ideas. This may start on paper but will then be followed by material investigation and processes such as screen printing, knitting, or modelling on the stand. Toiles and samples are then generated which then help the students to develop a collection. There are always lots of samples made before developing a final piece. All aspects of fit and construction
artists, hairdressers and DJs very kindly support the collections, helping students create a head to toe look with appropriate music for each collection. The set is built the day before the first fashion show and students work as team to rehearse, dress and orchestrate the event back stage. After a number of rehearsals the show begins to an excited audience. The show opens with work from our second and third year students before the final collections are shown, and the whole event is filmed and photographed. ‘The students always describe the fashion show as the highlight of their four year experience. To see all their hard work, blood, sweat and tears appear as a final collection on the catwalk is exciting and exhilarating for them and gives them the chance to showcase their work to friends and family who have supported them throughout. Pieces can be purchased by contacting the student through the degree show catalogue, or through the department’.

Aside from my parents, the most successful long-term relationship I have had throughout my life has been with chocolate. The relationship has changed over time - buttons have given way to bars, milk has been replaced with dark - but it has been a constant presence from the very beginning. To this day, stepping through the door of a chocolatier’s shop takes me back to a simpler time, when the only thing that mattered was what flavour would surprise me when I bit into the middle, and how many treats I could afford to buy with my pocket money. It is probably no wonder, then, that I so frequently cross over the threshold of Cocoa Ooze on Belmont Street, and most recently to discover the art of chocolate making for myself. Cocoa Ooze offers regular public and private workshops, inviting you to don one of their aprons and become a chocolatier for the night. After the requisite amount of
time spent sampling the different types of chocolate, you are ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Soon you are melting, stirring, tempering, piping, dipping and whipping up your own ganache like a professional. In one corner of the room are bowls brimming with colourful toppings, with bottles and droppers full of all manner of flavourings, and it is not difficult to imagine what Mr. Wonka must have felt like in his factory. Given the opportunity to create a tray full of truffles and two bars each, there really is no limit to your experimentations and the best part is, you get to take them home with you. I cannot say that my own creations were as professional as the ones on display at Cocoa Ooze, but they were surprisingly adequate once bagged and bowed and I took great pride in sharing them with my family and waiting to see the look of surprise on their faces as they bit into the middle. www.cocoa-ooze.co.uk

More than ninety years ago, in an effort to revitalise the city’s beachfront, the Aberdeen Town Council hosted a design competition. The architect firm of Thomas Roberts and Hume put forward the winning proposal, which included at its heart a modernist building featuring an octagonal dance floor with a grand domed ceiling above. Construction began in 1926 and, three years later, the Aberdeen Beach Ballroom opened its doors to the public.
As its name suggests, the designers put particular emphasis on the dance floor, incorporating fourteen hundred steel springs beneath the wood surface, earning the Beach Ballroom its reputation as one of the best, and bounciest, dance venues in Scotland. Though the great domed ceiling can no longer be seen, many original features are still evident throughout and, with ongoing refurbishment projects, it is hoped that the full height will one day again be revealed.
The Beach Ballroom, instantly recognisable with its pyramidal red-tiled roof and art deco features, has since played host to some of the greatest nights of entertainment the city has ever seen. In fact, a little-known quartet of young men from Liverpool took centre stage in January 1963 as part of the Johnny Scott

BOOKS
| 93
Around this time of year, we get an urge to update or renovate our living space. Whether it’s inspiration for a space of your own, redecorating, reorganising or repurposing some dated furniture, we’ve picked the most helpful books for Autumn homes…
Geraldine James’s The Creative Home is perfect for anyone who loves looking at other people’s homes and stealing their ideas. The book features a huge range of rooms, from minimalist to eclectic overload, from the palazzo to the pokey pied à terre, and everything from the lavishly renovated to amazing homes furnished with second hand finds and a tiny budget. There are great ideas for every room in the house, plus a brilliant chapter on storage and display. £19.99, out in September.
If you’re stuck with tired outdated furniture, or want to give something a new lease of life, then Hester van Overbeek’s Furniture Hacks is a great starting point. Furniture hacking requires some imagination and basic DIY skills, but you could end up with your own unique pieces for surprisingly little outlay. There are 35 projects here - from simple patchwork rugs to making your own four poster - and they are likely to start you off on many more of your own. £13.58 from Amazon.
We’ve long admired the cool minimalist Scandinavian summer cottage, or the cobbled together Russian dacha, but we never thought we’d feel envious of someone’s shed. However Gill Heriz has persuaded some amazing women to let us have a peek inside their personal sanctuaries in A Woman’s Huts and Hideaways. We’re now pining for a riverside retreat, or our own cabin in the woods, but will have to make do with this beguiling selection of tiny spaces from urban garden studios, to mud-built huts in the wilds of Oregon. £16.58 from Amazon.

It’s all too easy to assume that a wellfitted suit and an off duty wardrobe built round jeans, t-shirts and a down-filled jacket is all a chap needs to get through Autumn in style. Many designer’s efforts simply don’t translate into real life. Gucci can send as many razor cheek-boned models in pyjama suits down their catwalks as they like, but for most North-east men, style must be practical. So what’s on the shopping list? Well, a warm coat or jacket is a no-brainer. Bomber jackets offer
to cope with the wetter weather, taking a cue from the clumpier styles that have been popular in women’s styles over the past year. Hiking or work boots are perfect for weekends. Checks and tartans replace summer’s stripes and there are a lot of silky and shiny fabrics around, perfect as a shirt or t-shirt. Don’t go overboard - unless your interests are highly specialised, there are remarkably few occasions where head to toe Lycra, leather and latex is socially acceptable. a versatile solution, while duffle

The new shawl-collared knitwear will also keep off the chill, while copper hues bring a freshness to the autumn palette, alongside the usual dark greys, browns, blues and black. Pink pops up to provide some warmth as an accent shade and shearling is popular for trims.

Last year, the Telegraph reported that the average cost of raising a child in the UK had reached £230,000. That’s a couple of Aston Martins or the average house price in the Shire.
KIDS
While a day out with your offspring may seem like a second mortgage could be called for, kids remember and value spending time together as a family rather than extravagant days out. Here are some of our favourite ways to have fun as a family without breaking the bank... Children are competitive, so capitalise by running a series of activities and offering a small prize at the end, like choosing a DVD to watch, or deciding what’s for dinner. Try making and flying kites, creating a family portrait, going for a bike ride along the old railway track to Cults, building outdoor forts from sheets and playing with water bombs. Check out www.netmums.com or www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk for tons of ideas. Baking cakes or making popcorn is inexpensive fun and older kids may enjoy the challenge of making dinner. If the weather’s poor, it’s worth checking out your local library. As well as books and DVDs, most have free activities going on throughout the week. Bookbug sessions are for under-fives and there are craft activities, storytelling sessions, treasure hunts and lots more. Community centres also offer free or low-cost activities; check the council website for what’s coming up in your area. Other rainy day activities include cutting up old fabrics or buying some cheap lining fabric and making superhero capes, making sock puppets, playing board games or making your own playdough or gloop. Junior fashionistas will enjoy making outfits from newspaper, paint and sellotape - anything

from princess dresses to haute couture is possible! Alternatively, as Calvin and Hobbes fans will know, large cardboard boxes and a little imagination can result in a racing car, rocket ship or even a pair of wings, while a bed can become a raft or magic carpet, with everything you need for a journey all piled on top. If the weather’s good, nature activities, such as pond dipping and bug hunts are fun. The local ranger service offers free sessions throughout the year for the clueless naturalist parent. Set up a tent - or use sheets - and camp outside for the day, cooking on a campfire. Make a wigwam using garden canes and an old sheet, then paint designs on it. If you’re more urban, try www.treasuretrails.co.uk, who offer several downloadable spy mission treasure trails for £6.99 each, which can keep a bunch of kids amused for an afternoon. For outdoor play, pack a picnic, try rolling down hills in the park or paddling at the beach, or head further afield to the excellent free play facilities at Charleston Fruit Farm, where you can also pick your own berries, or Brechin Castle Garden Centre, which has great bouncy cushions and an adventure park filled with climbing frames, swings and a zip wire, as well as a huge pond full of ducks. Having fun is as much about creating memories as spending money - at least till the teenage years start!

Aberdeen based Glencraft, manufacturer and supplier of bespoke and handcrafted beds and mattresses, is to collaborate with North East Scotland College (NESCOL) to launch a student project designed to apply skills learned in a classroom environment to a real life scenario. Students on the Fashion Design and Manufacture course will design a mattress headboard as a part of the Creative Textiles module. The project will run over the entire term, before designs and concepts are submitted to the Glencraft board when a winner will be chosen and their work displayed at the company’s Lang Stracht showroom. www.glencraft.co.uk

Banging the drum big time these days for pepping up Aberdeen and seeking to dispel the atmosphere of doom and gloom is city businessman and publican Allan Henderson, better know as Hendo. The 52-year-old is chairman of Aberdeen Inspired, a high-profile business-led initiative behind many projects you can see in the city such as floral baskets and big belly bins in Union Street. More than that, levy payers have supported the city’s Christmas Village and the Purple Flag accreditation scheme which recognises excellence in the management of city centres at night-time. Aberdeen Inspired’s new chief executive, Adrian Watson, who rose to the rank of divisional commander of Aberdeen City division of Police Scotland before calling a halt to a 30-year career, had a big hand in the latter initiative and will continue to monitor it. Says Allan, 'We are fortunate to have a man of his calibre and experience on board to continue bringing improvements to the heart of the city. As for myself, I think Aberdeen is a great city but we undersell ourselves. We need to talk up what we have to offer. Aberdeen has been very good to my various enterprises and I want to give something back to our great city.'
It all began for Hendo in that little gem of a place near the entrance to Aberdeen harbour, Fittie. 'Most of my family still live there and I am very proud of my roots,' he says. A keen golfer, he can remember being taken across the water 'in a boat with a small motor' to get a game over at the Balnagask course. Hendo won a bursary to Robert Gordon’s College for his schooling and reveals a little known claim to fame. 'I loved chess from an early age and got into the six-man college team which won the Scottish schools championship,' he says, adding with a twinkle, 'Believe it or not, I was just 12.' He has made lots of moves since then, notably running The Workshop for nearly 17 years, a burgeoning onshore contract catering business which extends from Aberdeen to Dunoon and across the border to outlets in Great Yarmouth and Derby.
'I am very fortunate to have my wife Nicola doing a great job in the day-to-day management of this business,' adds Allan. In addition, however, he has become a high-profile figure in the licensed trade in Aberdeen and round about in the last few years. Since January 2009 when he opened McGinty’s Meal an’ Ale on Union Street, Hendo and fellow directors have added The Stag on Aberdeen’s Crown Street, No.10 Bar & Restaurant, The Ferryhill House Hotel and The Fourmile at Kingswells to their portfolio. And it was a historic day at Westminster the day I met Hendo at the revamped No. 10 hostelry and restaurant in Aberdeen’s Queen’s Terrace. Theresa May was about to be handed the keys to that other No. 10, the one in Downing Street, but as one of the pub’s first customers when it opened 30 years ago, I know which one I would choose to be inspired in.
