Because we plan each issue ahead of time and our events need organised well in advance, we’re already thinking about spring here at Trend, despite the howling blizzard outside. We’ve got so much lined up for you this year that the calendar will be full with swish dates. Entries are now open for our keenly fought “Life with Style Awards”, which recognise the best retail and lifestyle businesses in the Northeast. There are lots of categories - from hotels to hairdressers, interiors to community champions, so if you know of a business or organisation which is truly special, why not suggest they enter. The Awards ceremony is Aberdeen’s equivalent of the Oscars and many of the dresses are so glamorous they’d not look out of place on the red carpet. The event always sells out, so book your table early. Talking of glamour, we’re having another of our brilliant “Afternoon Tea Garden Parties”, and there will be more fashion shows and our second exclusive TREND Weddings event is currently being planned. All this and a magazine just packed with great features... We hope you enjoy it.

A Healthier Lifestyle

At the start of the year, after the indulgence of Christmas and New Year, is when many people vow to kick bad habits and create a healthier lifestyle for themselves. For those of you feeling heavier than you are comfortable with, we can offer, along with exercise, surgical weight management from our Professor led surgical team. The effects of alcohol and smoking can both take its toll on your skin. Smokers often find themselves with grooves around their lips which have formed over the years of puffing on a cigarette. Injectable treatments can benefit this. Both smoking and alcohol can dehydrate your skin and it can make it look dull. A peel or microdermabrasion can help here along with giving up smoking and reducing alcohol intake.

BEAUTY FEATURE

Sleeping Beauty > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

For some of us, mornings are a whirlwind of getting everyone scrubbed, fed, clothed and out of the door. With a phone in one hand and a jam-spattered toddler in the other, sometimes there just isn’t time for a comprehensive beauty routine at the start of the day. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best products that work overnight.

Apply before bed and you'll wake up looking great...

Youthful Eye Serum

No 7’s new Youthful Eye Serum reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles in just four weeks. It uses a blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamins A and C, cassava and anti-ageing peptides that work while you slumber. £19.50 from Boots or www.boots.com

Weightless Treatment Oil

Wake up with smooth and glossy locks thanks to Nicky Clarke’s Weightless Treatment Oil. Just apply to wet hair, plait and leave overnight and gently shake out with fingers in the morning for a tousled glossy wave. It is available online at www.nickyclarke.com for £20.

Malvala Night Cream

Fed up with dry hands? Malvala’s night cream for the hands comes with some moisturising cotton gloves and will help rejuvenate even the roughest skin. At around £35, it isn’t cheap, but hands often betray the signs of ageing well before the face. Stocked at www.feelunique.com and www.lookfantastic.com

Clinique Moistre Surge Overnight Mask

Get softer, supple skin overnight with Clinique’s new Moisture Surge Overnight Mask, a penetrating formula that supplies essential lipids to the skin and also works throughout the night to help calm and soothe irritation. This fragrance-free, clinically proven mask costs £28 from Clinique counters.

Aubrey Organic Night Cream

If you prefer a more organic approach, try green favourite Aubrey Organics’ Night Cream, which is £22.46 from www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk. This top notch treatment, ideal for dry and combination skin, is packed with natural ingredients including Rosa Mosqueta oil, derived from rose hips, aloe vera and lavender.

So, why not wake up looking great? 15

FASHION FEATURE

> WORDS BY CHARLOTTE STROUD

Many fashionista’s were hopeful the neon trend was left behind in 2012, it definitely was not. Now is the time to make peace with fluorescent and find out how to make this naughty 90’s trend work for you. This spring is all about playing with colours and fabrics and having fun. Bright and bold statement colours make a punchy impact. For a ‘quirky’ outfit team splashes of neon with nude, another huge trend for 2013. The contrast is stunning and worked effortlessly for Christian Dior this season. Neon is not for the feint hearted. Ease yourself in with gorgeous accessories, from bags to shoes and belts to jewellery. Think hints of pink, green and yellow and illuminate your outfit.

On each occasion, in consultation with the couple, she sketched several designs, incorporating their ideas and suggesting others. After the final choice was made, a model was cast in wax to ensure it was exactly what Jillian wanted. It was then made up in silver, ready to wear within a few weeks of consultation.

And once the couple approached McCalls expert Aubin Stewart, with their idea of creating something new and individual from previously loved but discarded pieces, she channelled their vision into a beautiful bespoke design.

There’s no charge for initial design consultations or sketches and no obligation and Aubin is always delighted to hear clients’ ideas. “I love working on commissions like these, it’s a joy to help create such unique and personal pieces.”

“It was such great fun, I’d recommend anyone to try it,” says Jillian who’s so delighted

Having someone close to you who has suffered from a situation can be exactly what is needed to find the drive to embark on a challenge. This was what spurred on Flexlife’s Sarah Niddrie whose cousin and best friend were both affected by cancer. Sarah and 21 members of the Flexlife team cycled a total of 372 miles over three days, raising almost £20,000 for Monty’s Maggie’s appeal. Sarah said: “When I signed up to do the challenge I thought it would be tough – but not half as tough as it was! They say you never forget how to ride a bike – well I certainly won’t forget now. “Everyone seems to have someone close to them who has endured the pain of cancer. My cousin died of childhood cancer, an emotional experience that was at the forefront of my mind throughout the challenge. “Looking back I am proud of what the team achieved. Not only was it a tremendous personal achievement– but to know that the money raised will help people who are suffering is a great feeling.”

Aberdonian Winter Warmer > WORDS BY RYAN SWINNEY

After fighting through the cutting wind, whilst weighed down with some post-Christmas gluttony we were glad to find warm hospitality as well as fine dining at the Caledonian Thistle Hotel. We were welcomed by the friendly and enthusiastic staff, who quickly had us seated at our table, set in the Café Bar surrounded by candles and tranquil music. After pondering over the drink menu we decided on a bottle of Reisling white wine, filled with spices, which was poured with ease and sipped with no hesitation. They also offered a wide range of cocktails from a ‘Woo Woo’ a Swinney family favourite, to your standard spirits and liquors. 44

The Café Bar was filled with an array of nationalities, which whisked us away to a foreign location without showing my horrendous passport photo! It was the perfect setting for a night that was expecting snowfall. An eager and knowledgeable waiter arrived and was happy to guide us through the menu. Our starter was a steaming bowl of homemade lentil soup arriving with a large hunk of bread, the perfect winter warmer! For the main course, we recommend the salmon, which was grilled to perfection, on a bed of vibrant and colourful vegetables – delicious would be an understatement. The fish melted in your mouth with a creamy lemon butter sauce, and was accompanied by some of the best new potatoes I’ve ever had.

Homemade sticky toffee pudding with cream would’ve been on the cards if we hadn’t over indulged during the festive season. It’s easy to see why The Caledonian Thistle is so popular amongst tourists and locals alike, the warmth from the staff and atmosphere practically glows from the windows, acting as a beacon for people searching for the equivalent of a cosy bosie. The Caledonian Thistle is definitely a very good reason to venture out in the cold. 10-14 Union Terrace Aberdeen AB10 1WE T: 0871 376 9003 www.thistle.com

The Bieldside’s a tasty alternative > WORDS BY CAROL LESLIE

A laid back informal dinner at the recently refurbished Bieldside Inn, 3 miles from the City Centre, was just what the doctor ordered to dispel the winter blues. The openplan lounge and restaurant has a modern look, friendly atmosphere and offers a mouthwatering menu of traditional and contemporary food tastes. For starters the boxed baked camembert was beautifully presented and matched with a tangy onion marmalade. Caprese salad was served with a generous helping of chilled buffalo mozzarella and the steak carpaccio was a hit, being both succulent and tender. For main course the retro “Posh Monkfish Scampi” served in a basket, with fries, a pea puree and homemade tartare sauce. The British lamb rump was served

with a generous helping of creamy colcannon and seasonal vegetables, a port wine jus enhancing the flavour. For the hungry husbands the homemade chilli burger was judged to be a winner while a massive portion of fish and chips arrived wrapped in authentic newsprint. Only one of us managed to squeeze in a sticky toffee pudding served with Porelli’s ice cream and fudge sauce - tactfully delivered with four spoons! “The Bielder” offers a great option for an informal meal, with fantastic cooking, a refreshing wine list and friendly local staff. Tuesday evening is the weekly Curry and Quiz Night with Friday offering “Fish and Chips” for two for £17 means there’s always a good reason to visit.

ADVERTISEMENTS CHEF FOCUS

What made you decide to be a chef? From a young age I was always interested in trying new flavours, from my Mum’s home baking to different cuisines from around the world, so it was a natural progression. Describe your cooking style? I’d say my style has changed over the years from complex into a simpler Mediterranean style using just three or four ingredients on each plate with emphasis on local ingredients, flavour and texture. Where do you look for inspiration for ideas? I love looking through old and unusual cookery books. Just now I am reading a lot of books about Middle Eastern cookery and I will be looking into using some of these new ingredients and trying to create some new dishes. What is the worst thing about modern restaurant cooking? Two words -molecular gastronomy! In principle, I like the innovation and the concept, it’s just when you get people trying to use these processes without the correct knowledge and training - you don’t always get the desired end product, and there are very few people who can carry this off consistently well.

ADVERTISEMENTS

I think there are a lot of very good restaurants in the city centre with some talented chefs using the best local ingredients to create some excellent food; but most of restaurants are not getting enough trade from Monday to Friday. The arrival of so many average branded restaurants in shopping centres is taking the trade away from the

city centre. I’d say if you take time to look around you will find some very good food at reasonable prices from your local restaurant owners and chefs. It’s important to support local businesses that use local suppliers.

Start by making the lemon pickle. Half 1 lemon lengthways, slice across and thinly sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt, sugar, turmeric, cumin mix and leave for couple of hours. Cut the squash into 1cm dice add the halved garlic and herbs. Roast in oven @ 170C for 10-12 minutes and cool. Make the hummus in a blender next. Aston Martin breaks the ton > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

It is 100 years since Aston Martin was founded. Since then, the company has developed into an iconic brand synonymous with luxury and elegance. Always seen as the marque for the sporting gentlemen, it has found favour with royalty, Hollywood superstars and a certain Bond...James Bond. The company started life in 1913 as Bamford & Martin Ltd, being renamed Aston Martin after Lionel Martin’s successful runs at the Aston Hill Climb. Within a year the first car had been built and by the early 1920s the marque was enjoying success at Grand Prix and other races, which helped raise the sporting profile of the company. Like many British car

manufacturers, Aston Martin faced a number of financial setbacks, briefly closing in 1925 and again in 1975. Frequently acclaimed as the most beautiful car in the world, the Aston Martin DB5 entered production in 1963. The following year saw the birth of a relationship that has left an indelible mark on popular culture, as the DB5 was chosen to be James Bond’s car of choice in the classic film Goldfinger. The same model also starred in Skyfall, the latest outing for Mr Bond.

respectively. In 1986, the 007 relationship continued with the V8 Volante appearing in The Living Daylights. The DB5 graced Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies, while 2001 saw with the 5,000th Aston Martin DB7 being produced and the launch of the V12 Vanquish. While Bond may have access to the best that Aston Martin has to offer, M15 have confirmed that today’s secret agent is more likely to be found in a cubicle than a DB5.

Following up on the success of the DB5, the DB6 and DB6 Volante were launched in 1965 and 1966 59

MOTORING

> WORDS BY DAVID GILLANDERS

As a teenager I remember my father used to manage a company in Aberdeen, namely Continental Cars. This multi-franchise garage used to sell all new foreign brands under one roof, can you imagine BMW, Volvo, Auto Union, Renault, VW and Mercedes-Benz all together? In those days Mercedes-Benz was king, I remember looking at all these foreign cars and I was always attracted to the one with the large silver star, but as time went on, all the franchises were to split up and we have what we see today, designated buildings for the individual brands. They have all grown to be massive and very popular franchises, but over the years Mercedes-Benz has lost ground to its competition. However, Mercedes-Benz is not taking this lying down and in the last few years they have addressed their problems of poor quality and styling.  I recently test drove a Mercedes Benz C250, which has as direct 60

competitors Audi A4 and the BMW 3 series. In the short time I drove this car, it is quite apparent Mercedes-Benz have turned a corner and are now producing a car that is once again a world-beater. The fit and finish are excellent, the accessory list comprehensive and with some very competitive finance deals, this is a car that needs to be on your shopping list if you are thinking about the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4. I am not a lover of the diesel engine, but coupled to a very good auto box this car will accelerate zero to 62mph in 7.4 seconds and return over 60 mpg Extra-Urban which is excellent against the competition. The next time you are

thinking of changing your car, just remember how far Mercedes has come in the last few years. I should also mention, because we live in the North-east of Scotland and the weather can be very wintery for almost six months of the year, Mercedes-Benz can for a reasonable price offer a deal to change your wheels and tyres for a winter set, so you can have suitable tyres available. Whether front or rear-wheel drive, driving a car with snow tyres will make you feel so much more secure in bad road conditions.

TAKING LOCAL TEXTILES TO THE WORLD

>WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

Scotland has long been known for the quality of its woollens and textiles. Chanel recently bought over Barrie Knitwear, Johnson’s of Elgin have just won a Royal Warrant and Harris tweed is finding favour on the catwalks of Milan, New York and Paris. High-flying former retail manager Louise Hepworth is determined to bring outstanding Scottish textile craftsmanship to a wider audience, through her online business, The Croft House. “Over the past couple of years, I was made redundant and moved home from Aberdeen to north of Peterhead. This made me reevaluate my work-life balance, so I began looking for opportunities to open my own business. Given my love of textiles, I decided to look at retailing locally-made woollen products as an alternative to the mass-produced foreign items which fill our high streets”, Louise enthused. 64

“Yes, you can buy cheap alternatives but The Croft House gives consumers the choice of great quality, locally-made items with true authenticity. We have sourced our products from a mix of larger knitwear manufacturers and local craftspeople such as the hand knitters who make our Arran berets and mittens. “All the items we sell are made in either Scotland or Ireland. We have

such a long tradition of knitting, weaving and spinning in this part of the world, and we do still have manufacturing in this country so it is important to support it. In these tough economic times it helps not only the people directly employed but also the wider economy. And of course it keeps the heritage alive – for example Harris tweed is currently undergoing a resurgence and

is being used by many top international designers. “All our products are based around natural fibres such as wool and cashmere. We sell knitwear and accessories such as scarves, gloves and hats and Harris tweed bags. We also stock homewares like throws and cushions. Items are available for all the family - we stock womenswear, menswear and childrenswear,” Louise continued, “We’ve just had our first baby, Iona, so we could end up using her as a babywear model! “I think it’s important to use natural products as they are kinder to our skin than synthetics. Wool regulates your body temperature by drawing moisture away from

your body, letting your skin breathe and is anti-allergenic. In an age when skin conditions and allergies are alarmingly common, going back to basics is a good alternative. From an environmental point of view they are also better as they are from sustainable sources (a sheep produces a new fleece every year) and are biodegradable so have a lower carbon footprint than alternatives. Combined with our local sourcing policy, this makes for a very green ethical choice. We are also an official supporter of the Campaign for Wool which has HRH The Prince of Wales as its patron. “When setting up the business it was important not only to support local manufacturers and craftspeople but also the wider

community. Usually on a website a proportion of every transaction goes to a financial company. Our payment system means that for every transaction processed using a credit or debit card, it generates revenue for the charity Epilepsy Scotland. We are an online retailer only, so at this time we do not take visitors. It was important to us to establish as an online retailer to promote our fantastic Scottish products around the globe – our international customers have an appreciation of the heritage and quality of our products. It is something that we should take more pride in here at home!” www.thecrofthouse.com

From the top of the lift and throughout the ride under the trees, it’s a magnificent way to take in the scenery – always assuming you don’t have your eyes shut tight.

You can also try ice climbing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, tube sliding or handling your own husky team. If you’d rather relax, you can sit back for a sleigh ride or browse the village’s wonderful boutiques and galleries, or you can attend one of the many festivals throughout the year. As famous as Tremblant is for its skiing, it is also a choice destination for all kinds of summer fun. Explore the region at the wheel of an ATV, scale the mountainside along the Via Ferrata du Diable, negotiate the meandering currents on a river raft. Or if you prefer a more leisurely pace, paddle your canoe across the shimmering lake, play a round at one of the four award-winning golf courses or sit back and relax aboard the comfortable tour boat. If fishing is more your style, Tremblant offers a choice of excursions and

even an introduction to the art of fly-fishing. And of course, there’s always paintball, rock climbing and many more surprises in store! Even autumn is not without its charms as the forests blaze in reds and golds and the hiking and horseback trails are still to be covered in snow. Attractions from falconry displays to free concerts each weekend mean Tremblant is a brilliant place to visit all year round. The best place to stay is the Quintessence, Tremblant’s preeminent boutique hotel, which offers unparalleled luxury and service. Inspired by Old-World estates, Hotel Quintessence offers 30 waterfront suites, each with a private terrace or balcony accessed by large French doors. Each suite has its own wood-burning fireplace (and a wood concierge) creating a feeling of warmth that is traditional to the region. Plush

furniture is upholstered with the finest fabrics. The giant bathrooms come with therapeutic spa bathtubs that are particularly welcome after a day on the mountain, although you can also take advantage of the hotel’s inroom massage service. Alternatively, unwind in the hotel’s tranquil spa, or take a cruise in the hotel’s 33-foot antique motorboat. So whether you’re looking for laid-back luxury, the change to get back to nature or an actionpacked break, Mont Tremblant has something to offer for all the family.

Gourdon artist Sam Barnett paints charming wildlife studies, drawing her inspiration from nature. Capturing the perfect image can mean rushing outdoors wearing pyjamas and wellingtons, as she explains...

“I grew up in the countryside near Monymusk and was always interested in art – my mum went to art school in the sixties and I was keen to be able to draw like her. I studied painting at Grays,” Sam explained.

My paintings are representational although not photorealistic - while I focus on certain details, I like to keep the brushwork loose in other areas. I work in oil on either canvas or card.

When Oscar was little I was rather busy and painting wasn’t really a priority – then his sister came along and two small children doesn’t leave you with much time for yourself! Once they were both at school, I started making cards and painting again. “A friend nudged me into doing North East Open Studios alongside her in 2011. Last year I exhibited on my own and I was very pleased and surprised by the positive response. I feel very lucky to be able to continue doing something that I love so much”. Weekend at

The Caledonian

A WALDORF ASTORIA HOTEL

The Caledonian first opened its doors 110 years ago and is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic hotels. Following a £24million luxury refurbishment, the hotel, located at the west end of Princes Street, has been rebranded as The Caledonian, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel. As part of the development, the hotel announced an exciting partnership with renowned Michelin-starred chefs, brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin, who have opened two restaurants within the hotel – The Pompadour by Galvin and Galvin Brasserie de Luxe – their first restaurants outwith London. The Pompadour by Galvin revives the glamour of the legendary dining room as a luxurious French culinary experience while Galvin Brasserie de Luxe is styled upon a bustling Parisian brasserie. 72

Peacock Alley Bar provides a totally different experience and complements the two Galvin restaurants. The original Peacock Alley is within the iconic Waldorf Astoria in New York and is very much an environment in which to see and be seen. Here visitors can enjoy a full range of food and beverages, from breakfast and brunch to afternoon tea and cocktails. The final stage of the hotel’s upgrade is the introduction of the UK’s first Guerlain Spa. Described as a sanctuary of luxury and relaxation, it is here that guests will experience sensorial, indulgent and cutting-edge treatments from

one of the world’s most luxurious spa brands. HISTORY

History in the Hills > WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

When you’re in need of a bit of rural escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, there is no better way to spend the day than huffing and puffing over the slopes of Bennachie. As you head out of town on the A96, this local landmark greets you with its majestic silhouette, made unmistakable by the craggy peak of Mither Tap. There is no doubt that you will enjoy a fantastic day of exercise, but if you plan carefully, you can also enjoy a great day of history. In recent years, the Forestry Commission has made significant improvements to both the parking facilities and the signage on and around the hill. Begin your ascent from the Bennachie Centre and just as your legs start to feel the incline of the land, you have arrived at what the sign describes as The Colony. What remains is the last bit of a 19th century croft, now nothing more than a ring of stones protruding from the ground. Crofts like this once dotted the slopes of Bennachie and provided a free home for workers until the wealthy landowners declared the land for themselves and started charging the workers rent. Evidence of this declaration can be seen on a stone at the top of Mither Tap carved with the initials of the three estates of the time and cynically referred to as the Thieves Mark. On your way down from Mither Tap, be sure to pass through the main entrance of the 2000-year old hill 76

fort, then make your way across to Little Oxen Craig to see what remains of an old lintel quarry. And for the romantic in you, follow the Maiden Causeway down past Hosie’s Well, a legendary well filled with the tears of a brokenhearted man buried nearby over six hundred years ago. No matter where you walk on Bennachie, you’re assured some great views, a challenging workout and plenty of history. What better excuse to get your shoes on? www.forestry.gov.uk

FAMILY

A Smooth Segway > WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

If you look up the word segue (pronounced se-gwā) in the dictionary, it means a smooth, uninterrupted transition from one thing to another. The selfbalancing personal transportation device of the same name has its own unique spelling, but after an hour getting to know the machine called a Segway, I wondered if for me, it might represent the smooth, uninterrupted transition from using two feet to using two wheels. Having never seen a Segway up close, I was impressed when I arrived at Seaton Park to meet Kevin McArthur, owner and operator of Segway Aberdeen. The two-wheeled machines stood in an organised row, looking like they would be equally at home moving merchandise around a large warehouse or moving spacemen

around some distant planet. After watching Kevin demonstrate the technique of leaning your body forward or backward to coax your machine into action, I worried that my lack of co-ordination, coupled with my growing anxiety, would have me spending my one-hour session repeatedly picking myself up off the ground. Fortunately, technology had my back. Somehow, these amazing machines calibrate to your weight and seem intent on keeping you upright no matter how many attempts you make to the contrary. Before long, six of us were eagerly following Kevin on a tour of the park like a pack of two-wheeled ducklings following their mother. He took us over tree roots, through mud puddles, and even down a rather questionable looking path

of stairs, which represented both a leap of faith and a leap in street cred. Segway Aberdeen operates full time at Templars Park from March through October but is open year round for private hire for groups of four or more. If you’re planning any kind of event, it’s worth inviting Kevin and his two-wheeled arsenal. It’s hard to decide whether these machines were created for practical reasons or for recreation, but it doesn’t really matter because, most importantly, they’re good fun. www.segwayaberdeen.co.uk T: 0844 870 7105 77

It may not feel like spring is on its way to our corner of the world, but the welcome sight of snowdrops poking their dainty heads from the cold soil is a sure sign that temperatures will soon be rising. Why not get back to nature, by visiting one of the gardens taking part in this year’s Scottish Snowdrop Festival? The festival runs from 2 February to 17 March and we’ve picked out our favourite places to welcome the first of the spring flowers... Cambo Estate in Fife, home of the National Collection of 300 species of snowdrop, hosts Snowdrops by Starlight, in which light and sound is used to transform the snowdrop vistas into an enchanted starlit wonderland. Snowdrops by Starlight: 13 - 17 February, 5pm - 9.15pm. Entrance fee (advance bookings necessary): £10 per adult, children under 16 - £5, and under 5s go free. www.snowdropsbystarlight.com

FEATURE

Closer to home, Crathes Castle not only offers huge clouds of snowdrops but has eight themed gardens set within a walled garden. The gardens have a notable plant collection and historic topiaries and hedges. Head gardener Chris Wardle enthused, “We have some very large drifts of naturalised native snowdrops that are present in the woodlands just South East of the gardens. These make a great show sometime between late January and mid March, depending on the weather! “In the garden at the moment there’s great winter structure with many plants just coming into growth. It’s a good opportunity to see how you can add interest to your own garden at this time of the year, and the staff and volunteers are always happy to answer questions”. Open daily 9:30am to sunset Entrance fee: £9.50 adult, £6 child

Is it really five years since the first edition of Trend? What a positive impact you’ve had on Aberdeen and the Shire. When I moved here a decade ago, I’d have agreed with those who said the city was both parochial and a bit of a backwater when it comes to shopping and culture, but now I think the way you promote the area has changed this for the better. Your support of local businesses, restaurants, shops and especially artists and makers has done more to put Aberdeen on the map than any local government or tourism initiative ever has. I love the writing and the design and the fashion features are always on the mark. Each issue is fresh, entertaining and always has something new. You’re a great team and Trend is a great little magazine. I look forward to the next five years. J Arbuthnott Banchory

THE LAST WORD

Showbiz is big biz for Jane

> WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

Meet Jane Spiers from the fair city of Perth who is now in charge of three iconic places of entertainment in the Granite City, His Majesty’s Theatre, the Music Hall and the Lemon Tree. She is chief executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) and came to the city last autumn after great success as chief executive of Horsecross Arts in Perth. “I have been made to feel incredibly welcome,” says Jane, “and I have inherited a great team at APA. I hope to build its profile as one of Scotland’s most successful performing arts companies. APA is already big business with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the seasonal panto, for example, netting over £1.2million. Did you know we put on 1,000 shows last year which were seen by half a million people?” However, Jane doesn’t want people merely to sample the many and varied productions and shows on offer. “There is a wealth of artistic endeavour in this region and I want to nurture and inspire talented young people to develop as we do with young bands at the Lemon Tree,” she adds. “Everyone has creative potential and I believe using it can help you become enterprising and innovative in life.”

Jane believes Aberdeen to be an exciting city and hopes it can achieve City of Culture status. She also wants to continue to provide a distinctive and adventurous programme for all three APA venues. One of her legacies at Perth was to have its theatre secure its place as a producing house and Jane would like to see more work for the stage originating in Aberdeen. She is a graduate in Hispanic studies from Edinburgh University but has now added Doric to her linguistic mix. “Listening to Robbie Shepherd as the voice of the dragon in the panto was a big help,” says Jane. And, by the way, she also knows what a rowie is!
