Welcome to the June and July issue of Trend. As usual at this time of year, we’re hoping for a succession of hot sunny days, but we’re hedging our bets too. We’ve been out and about looking for great places to eat, play, shop and stay that will make for a memorable summer no matter what the weather’s like.

Congratulations to all the finalists in this year’s Life with Style Awards. The night brings out all the best the North-east of Scotland has to offer, as well as some seriously high-octane outfits. The Trend Events team really deserve an award of their own for putting together an absolutely flawless night, with everything from the music, food, lighting and table arrangements being just perfect. As usual, they make everything look effortless, though we know that hundreds of hours go into getting every detail just right.

The enticing prospect of summer holidays and warmer days at home mean it’s time to bare those tootsies.

Whether you’re planning a tropical beach holiday or just lounging in the back garden, your feet will benefit from a little help to make them sandal-worthy.

Trend asked podiatrist Ros Riungu of Aberdeen’s First Foot for some top tips for toes...

‘The chances are that your feet have been neglected while they’ve been hidden away over the winter months.

It’s worth having a check up with an HPC Registered podiatrist/chiropodist who can advise you on how to keep your feet healthy and prevent foot problems before they occur’, Ros explained.

‘About 70% of foot problems stem from shoes that don’t fit properly. The majority of adults wear the wrong size, because we sometimes often value looks over functionality!’

‘Flip-flops and sandals with thongs can irritate the delicate skin between toes, giving rise to painful blisters and causing pain when the toes are forced to claw round to keep the flip flop in place which leads to muscle strain. Look for summer footwear that provides support through ankle straps and soft padding. Avoid buying

anything with rough edges or seams that will cause irritation.’

About 70% of foot problems stem from shoes that don’t fit properly.

‘Have a medical pedicure or pamper your feet at home. Start by exfoliating with a scrub, dry your feet and use a pumice to remove rough skin, before rubbing almond oil into the nails.

Try an overnight moisturise, wearing cotton socks in bed and avoiding in between the toes. Use a base coat if applying varnish, to prevent discolouration.‘ ‘Take a selection of footwear, as wearing the same shoes every day can

lead to problems. Cushioned insoles and block heels or wedges provide comfort and stability when walking and using a sunblock can prevent the skin of the foot burning in the sun.’

Befriend A Child, an independent charity that has been working with underprivileged and disadvantaged youngsters from across the North-east since 1975, has received an overwhelming donation that really will make a difference to the lives of over 80 children in the area.

The primary aim of the charity is to relieve distress, promote welfare and advance the education of children in Aberdeen through a befriending service.

Karen Farquhar, Befriend A Child Chief Executive said, ‘This is a significant and incredibly generous donation and it has provided a great start to 2013.’

‘We rely on the support of volunteers to offer groups of children friendship, care and a positive adult role model. They often take the children on day trips and fun activities, providing an escape from their troubled home lives. Our biggest challenge over the past few years has been reducing the waiting list of children who have been referred to us, but are awaiting a suitable befriending match.’

‘This incredible contribution of £1million over the next five years will enable us to facilitate the recruitment and training of a 40

new group of volunteers. This will ensure matches are found for all of the 81 children currently on the waiting list. Words cannot express how grateful we are for this support.’

The Birdhouse Café is centrally located on the high street in Banchory and offers a welcome respite from the pace of a busy day of shopping. From the minute you walk through the door and receive the warm greeting of the owners, you know you’re going to be staying a while. And then you see the display of mouth-watering homemade cakes, and the rest of the day doesn’t matter any more.

When I visited, I was lucky enough to claim the window seat, where you can watch the world go by while sampling such delightful cakes as Chocolate Peanut Butter and Orange with White Chocolate. I opted for the gingerbread and can honestly say it was the very best part of my week.

The cappuccino comes in a chunky mug – the type you have to cradle with two hands and that instantly makes you forget your woes. There are also some very original sandwiches on offer, all fresh and made to order.

We deliberated over the menu before forgetting all about our waistlines and opted for the special of the day – a handmade beef burger topped with Jarlsberg cheese on a rustic roll, served with homemade, hand-cut chips. Everything on the menu at Balmakewan is made freshly to order with many of the cakes and dishes using local produce and items available to buy in the farm shop and deli – the perfect chance to try before you buy!

We couldn’t leave without trying the fabulous cakes and can confirm the Chocolate cupcake and fresh lemon and raspberry log are alone worth a drive to Balmakewan.

This quaint tea salon is the brain child of Angela Kozak. As you enter this cosy establishment you are taken aback with delight at the modern decor with a vintage twist. Serving a fabulous selection of artisan teas supplied

by Tea Forte as either loose tea in biodegradable sachets, or in their signature pyramid infuser, making the choice of flavour difficult.

After deliberating we chose a Green Mango Peach pyramid infuser and a Latte. To accompany, as it would be rude not to, we ordered lemon and ginger cake and salted caramel, their most popular apparently. The tea arrived on a small tray with a

traditional style tea cup and saucer; so charming and the cakes which accompanied were served on matching tea plates.

We shared the cakes and enjoyed both equally. This little haven serves breakfasts, light lunches and afternoon teas also, so we’ll be back to try that another day. It’s worth taking a trip to the toilets before you leave and look out for the Mad Hatter!

Chef Focus: Meet Yatai’s John Jones

Miso Shiru (serves 4) “Shiru” translates as “something to drink”, therefore miso soup is not served with a spoon, but drunk out of a cup, using chopsticks to pick up the garnishes.

Ingredients 500ml dashi (recipe follows) 40g white miso paste 20g red miso paste 10ml light soy sauce 10ml sake Cubed tofu, finely sliced spring onion, dried wakame seaweed.(a little pinch of wakame is enough as it will expand dramatically in hot liquid)

Dashi

Dashi is the foundation stone of Japanese cuisine, being used for most stocks, sauces and savoury dishes. For vegetarian miso shiru, just omit the katsuobushi.

500ml cold water 2” piece konbu seaweed 2 pc dried shiitake mushrooms 10g katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) Dashi Method Place konbu and shiitake in a pan of cold water.

Heat up slowly to just below boiling point.

Add katsuobushi and remove from heat.

Strain when katsuobushi has sunk to the bottom of the pan.

Miso method Place dashi in pan, heat to simmer.

Whisk in both miso pastes, turn off heat.

Add soy and sake.

Place cubed tofu, spring onion and wakame in cups and pour on miso soup and drink.

Had Yusuf Iridag pursued his original aim of an engineering career, Aberdeen might still be waiting for its first Turkish restaurant.

Thankfully, the young student from Istanbul ditched the idea and, aided by his wife Karen, turned catering entrepreneur instead.

Today, three decades on, the Iridag family, the restaurateurs behind the city’s popular Nargile and Rendezvous@Nargile plus Edinburgh offspring the Yeni Meze Bar, are celebrating a triple culinary triumph.

Nargile, their original Turkish restaurant in Skene Street, is marking 30 years in business; Rendezvous@Nargile in the west end is toasting its tenth anniversary and has also been named The Scottish Entertainment Guide’s 2013 winner of Scotland’s favourite Mediterranean restaurant.

The blend of Nargile’s traditional Turkish cuisine and the Rendezvous’ more modern east-meets-west fusion of flavours has consistently been popular, with the recent award, which was voted for by members of the public, proving the point.

It’s the icing on the cake for daughter Sara who, just like her father, switched careers – in her case giving up a successful job as a forensic scientist – to return to her roots to assist her mum in the overall running of the Rendezvous restaurant.

Now all of the Iridag family is involved in the business with Sara’s youngest sister Harika providing restaurant support in Aberdeen and middle sister Ruya and husband Stuart running the meze bar in the capital’s Hanover Street.

‘It’s brilliant to be involved in such a successful, long-running business,’ says Sara. ‘I just love meeting people and we get to know the customers – they become friends. We often have people introducing the next generation of their family to the restaurants and that makes it a really special place to be.’

‘We’ve witnessed lots of family celebrations down the years and we’re looking forward to customers sharing ours this summer.’

Situated in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the River Dee, Banchory is a town that has its roots in Metholithic times, with the very first settlements being built there over ten thousand years ago. The town was originally called Banchory-Ternan in honour of St. Ternan, a pict who converted to Christianity and then built a ‘Banchor,’ or place of Christian learning around 500 AD. If you’ve ever wondered how a flat piece of metal is shaped into a cup or a bowl, how stones are set or how leading jewellers create the perfect engagement ring, necklace or bangle, head to the Gordon Highlanders Museum between June 18th and 22nd where you can find out for yourself.

The museum is hosting an exhibition called “From Concept to Cup” which provides a fascinating insight into how an object is made, firstly working from the idea and drawings to actually making the finished object using techniques like tracing, repoussé, enamelling, stone-setting, wax carving and forging.

This exciting event showcases works created by some of the North-east’s most skilled and exciting craftspeople including Charles Smith, Anne Marquiss, Beverley Hutton Moore, Duncan and Jacqui Grant, Carole Herbet, Allan Baillie and Catherine Caseau, several of whom will be familiar to Trend readers.

Duncan and Jacqui Grant have worked as jewellers for the past twenty years, opening Lava Jewellery in 2006. They specialise in doing commission work for customers, remodelling old pieces and making their own contemporary collections. All their work is produced at their studio in Peterculter, where the workshops are visible enabling the public to see their jewellery being made.

Carole Herbet’s work is inspired by the natural forms and patterns found in nature, using a combination of techniques and materials.

Carole works silver, texturing the surface of the metal with hammers, etching and piercing. Colour is added to give depth; gold and copper is inlaid, and stones are set with claws or rub settings depending on the design.

Beverley Hutton Moore trained at Gray’s before becoming apprentice to the world-famous Malcolm Appleby. She now works as a jeweller and silversmith from her workshop near Aberdeen.

As well as making jewellery, Beverley has developed her skills into areas such as spoon-making and larger bowl and beaker raising.

She continues to add to her vast array of hand-making techniques ranging from hand-made chain to items of jewellery using precious metals combinations alongside precious and semi-precious stones.

Mike Hendry and Catherine Caseau from Gaelo Jewellery which is located inside the Alford Heritage Centre Museum, are designers and makers of their own jewellery range with emphasis on high quality gems and semi-precious stones. They also stock pieces from leading silversmith Charles Smith, who will also be demonstrating his skills at the exhibition.

Anne Marquiss designs and makes statement jewellery, using traditional methods such as etching and hammering to create contemporary pieces, while Alan Baillie is renowned for the fluidity of his forms, working in silver to produce sculptural, textured pieces of original jewellery and silverware with a Scottish influence.

It’s the perfect opportunity to meet and talk to the artists and craftspeople about their work. There will be demonstrations of various silversmithing and jewellery techniques each lunch time, so there will always be something new to see.

The exhibition is open from 10am to 4.30pm each day and marks the reopening of the museum. There will also be a selection of work for sale and all the makers involved are happy to discuss commissions.

There are a limited number of tickets available for a one off class on Tuesday 18th June at 7pm, when the makers will guide you through the theory of design, producing initial concepts and ideas into a finished piece. This class will be a great introduction to artistic design and a must for any budding jeweller or anyone who’d like a piece made to their own design.

Sandblasting may not be the foundation of many art forms, but Ann Lawrence uses the technique to create unique works of art in glass. We donned our goggles to find out more about her work...

‘I learned to engrave glass in the eighties, initially spending six very happy years engraving exclusively for J. W. Baker in Aberdeen’, Ann begins. ‘After raising my children, I started working by myself.’

‘I specialise in creating one of a kind, stage sandblasted pieces.

This involves ‘carving’ sections of glass through a hand cut stencil with high pressure abrasive to produce a three dimensional image.’

‘As most of my work is to commission, I can cover a wide range of styles. I love Art Nouveau and Deco design. My latest commission was a pair of champagne flutes, which had to incorporate a rose and a thistle, I drew my inspiration for the artwork from the delicate designs by Fostoria, who were leading Art Nouveau glass manufacturers.’

‘The challenge of engraving is that once I start there is no turning back, it simply has to be correct as it cannot be undone. There’s a lot of thought and planning behind each piece.’

‘I also engrave using diamond, stone and rubber burrs and recently had the pleasure of creating a special piece using both sandblasting and drill techniques. Given as a wedding anniversary present, the bowl featured a church, a castle, a map and a family crest. These four images represented where the couple were married, the venue for their photographs, the name of the menu they chose for their meal and their married name. The SNJO will take to the stage of Inverurie Town Hall on opening night with a special programme of swing music from the father of jazz music, Duke Ellington.

‘I’m very passionate about doing it right, about doing it authentically and capturing the spirit, so people can really feel what this music was about,’ Tommy explained. ‘It’s not a museum piece, it’s music in the now but from the past. It’s very hard to recreate something from the past in the spirit of how it was played, but that’s why we take quite drastic steps to achieve that.’

Other highlights include rat pack swing from Oceans 3, traditional jazz band Kit Carey from Glasgow and vocalist Marisha Addison who will deliver jazz vocal master classes for those eager to give it a try themselves.

Court buildings have always had a special allure about them. Perhaps this can be attributed to the intrigue created by Hollywood courtroom dramas, or to the constant stream of news reporters seen standing on the court house steps, awaiting the fate of the unfortunate accused inside. Whatever the reason, the Aberdeen Sheriff Court is certainly no exception.

Standing prominently on Castle Street at the top end of Union Street, the Sheriff Court Annex and High Court of Justiciary is an imposing presence in the city centre. Built in 1801 based on the designs of James Burn of Haddington, the building was originally a bank and served as that for almost 200 years. Officially known as Mercatgate and Grade A-listed by Historic Scotland, it was built in the Classical Style and its fully dressed granite exterior became the template around which much of 19th Century Aberdeen was built.

Converted to Courts in 2004-2005, the building went through a major interior restoration and refurbishment to better meet the requirements of its new occupants. The extensive enhancement programme received a commendation from the Aberdeen Civic Society and created an imposing interior that is as audacious as it is functional. The ground floor showcases the entrance hall with its Corinthian columns and marble floors, while the upper floors accommodate offices, witness facilities and court rooms for Sheriff and Jury as well as High Court sittings.

Attached to the Sheriff Court is the Aberdeen Town House with its stunning staircase and landmark clock tower and also The Tolbooth, once the Town’s prison and court house and now a museum that strives to keep Aberdeen’s rich history alive.

I can think of a lot of reasons that I wouldn’t want to find myself in the Aberdeen Sheriff Court Annex and High Court of Justiciary, but for the sake of history and architecture, it really is worth a visit. www.scotcourts.gov.uk www.aagm.co.uk/Venues/TheTolboothMuseum

And when you’ve been mountain biking long enough to speak the language of berms, table tops and death cookies, you’re ready to take on some real white-knuckle routes which you will find at Pitfichie Forest outside Alford and Moray Monster Trails near Keith.

I must confess that my overwhelming fear of all things dangerous had me worried when I recently joined my kids on the trails around Bennachie, but I quickly learned

A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy If you’ve never read Maeve Binchy, her books are what holiday reading is all about. This beloved Irish author writes stories that are light, easy to get into and hard to put down. A Week in Winter is Maeve Binchy’s final novel, completed shortly before she passed away. Set in the west coast of Ireland, this book tells the story of Chicky Starr who returns to Ireland after a failed relationship and opens Stone House, an exclusive hotel. The stories of those who come to work and stay at Stone House are initially told independently but ultimately weave together to form a story that is as comfortable to get into as a pair of old slippers.

The Snowman by Jo Nesbo If you enjoyed the Stieg Larsson trilogy, you will want to pick up a copy of The Snowman. Set in Oslo, Norway, this is one of a series of books featuring Detective Harry Hole, a murder squad detective who is about to face something that is unheard of in Norway – a serial killer. On the day of the first snow of the year, a young boy’s mother disappears and the only clues to be found are a set of wet footprints and a snowman in the garden wearing his mother’s pink scarf. The trail of clues reveals a violent history that threatens Harry’s very sanity. This book has a great surprise ending but can be rather dark in bits, so maybe best read during daylight hours.

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella Sophie Kinsella is perfect to read if you are going to have lots of hours by the pool or beach because once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop. I’ve Got Your Number is no exception. The story is about Poppy Wyatt who loses her heirloom engagement ring and her phone in the same afternoon. Luckily for her, she discovers a discarded phone in the bin and decides to make it her own, but soon realises she has taken on more than she bargained for. Like all Sophie Kinsella books, this one if full of characters that draw you in with their wit and leave you caring so much about them, you can’t put the book down.

The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton and Daniel Coyle If you like to take books on holiday that both you and your partner can read, then make sure to pack The Secret Race: Inside the Hidden World of the Tour de France. This non-fiction book is the story of Tyler Hamilton as told by Daniel Coyle. Tyler was a member of Lance Armstrong’s Tour de France team and was the first to openly admit to the doping charges that ultimately brought Lance Armstrong down and brought the entire cycling profession into disrepute. Whether you like or loathe Lance Armstrong, you cannot help but be gripped by this honest and heartfelt confession. This is an incredibly enjoyable read and one that will leave you looking at professional sports in an entirely new light.

The ward 40 ‘Crystals and Ice’ ball at the Marcliffe was held to raise funds for the Neurosurgery department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). Aberdeen athlete Myles Edwards is going places in pursuit of his ambition to run for Scotland in the 800 metres at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It’s Iten in Kenya to be precise where he rubs shoulders in training with world-class middle distance runners such as Olympic 800-metre champion David Rudisha.

‘I have been going there since September 2011,’ said the lean, mean Myles, ‘and it really does give you a competitive edge training at altitude. When I come home and run at sea level, it’s like I have an extra lung.’ The 24-year-old is setting his sights on shaving a few seconds off his personal best to meet the Scottish qualifying time for the Games and believes it is achievable with help from coaches Lewis Walker and Grant Smith.

‘Living conditions over there are pretty basic,’ said Myles, who has a degree in journalism from Edinburgh’s Napier University and now has his own PR company. ‘I rent a place in Kenya with another athlete for which we pay £37 a month and most of the athletes subsist on 90

a diet of maize flower and water and a spinach-type vegetable.’ At this point Myles grimaces and the word on his lips is Yuk! He has been greatly motivated to succeed by his 70-year-old marathon man dad, Mel, who still runs most days and has been a fixture on the Scottish athletics scene for decades. Myles says he is also indebted for sponsorship to an IT company, Prosource.it, at Banchory-Devenick.

And maybe the Bank of Scotland can chip in a few bob too after deciding to use him in a TV advertising campaign Trend readers may have seen. So how did that come about?

Myles said: ‘I had just come out of the bank’s Queen’s Cross branch in Aberdeen when I was approached by a casting agent and seemed to fit the criteria. It involved 12 hours of filming including 25 minutes holding up a jug of pennies. My arms were aching.’

He is a young man with a mission but he is also mindful of how tough life is for some Kenyan children and to that end has set up The Gathimba Edwards Foundation.
