Rob Currie, Head of Strength and Conditioning and assistant rugby coach at Aberdeen Grammar FP advises on how to keep fit as winter draws in.
When it’s cold and miserable, it’s easy to restrict your attempts to get fit and stay fit to the gym, but it can be a pretty boring place to spend the winter. It’s even easier to get home from work, decide it’s too dark and too cold to make an effort and then have twice the job to get fit come spring. My advice for the winter nights ahead is to try and get outside to train whenever the weather permits. If you’re running at night, try and plan a well-lit route to avoid trip hazards and getting injured. Wear bright, reflective clothes so motorists and others can see you clearly and don’t wear too many layers as you will overheat!
Use your weekends to get outside. Look into Jog Scotland running groups and other clubs to motivate yourself and make your training sociable. Go for a walk in the country or along one of the many beaches in the North-east with the family or by yourself. If you cycle in the summer, then spin classes might suit you and a weekend mountain bike ride is a great way to maintain your fitness levels. It’s the perfect time to try something new. Most gyms introduce new classes each season, so try a class for core strength, cardio fitness or relaxation. Consider working with a personal trainer if motivation is a problem or you’re not sure how to achieve your fitness goals. Whatever training you enjoy then set some goals between now and Christmas to give you some motivation and a sense of achievement.
Don’t hibernate all winter!

The team endured the challenging course as part of ThinkPR’s year-long fundraising campaign to mark the company’s 10th anniversary year and to raise £10,000 for the Alfie Milne Trust. ‘The run made us work hard to raise the money but it has been worth every gruelling minute. We have received a great deal of interest in our campaign as a result of our fundraising efforts so far and we are off to a great start.’ ThinkPR has already completed a number of successful fundraising activities which have raised over £7,000 for the Alfie Milne Trust. Further charity events are planned for later in the year with the aim of reaching the £10,000 target.
HEALTH WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS
A team from Aberdeen University is exploring the links between vitamin D and a range of health problems, following the discovery that between 30-40% of adults tested in the North of Scotland in winter have lower levels of vitamin D than anticipated. Vitamin D is generated in the body when the skin is exposed to natural summer sunlight, but in winter we don’t get the type of light needed for making vitamin D (UVB), so we rely on what we made in the summer. Poor summer weather can lead to a failure to reach the recommended dose. The vitamin is essential in regulating the uptake of calcium and phosphorus in the body, making strong bones. Professor Helen Macdonald explained, ‘The relationship between vitamin D and a number of health problems is complex. For example, Scandinavians get less UVBcontaining sunshine than people living here, but have higher levels of vitamin D. It could be down to an outdoors lifestyle, eating more oily fish, or other factors.
You can also take dietary vitamin D supplements, but a sunbed won’t boost your levels as they mainly supply UVA rays.
‘Low levels of vitamin D are associated with softening of the bones. There seems to be a link between vitamin D, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular problems, but further research is needed. Researchers are
also examining the impact vitamin D has on the immune system and auto-immune disease. We’re currently exploring whether you can get the same health benefits with dietary vitamin D, or if only natural light will work. ‘It’s possible to boost vitamin D levels through diet, using oily fish or eggs. Margarines and some breakfast cereals are also fortified. You can also take dietary vitamin D supplements, but a sunbed won’t boost your levels as they mainly supply UVA rays. ‘About 10 minutes exposure to the sun, once or twice a day, is ideal, keeping in mind that it’s important to cover up and not risk burning.’

TIME TO ADOPT A PRESCRIPTION SKINCARE REGIME? Local GP Dr Vicki Guthrie provides cosmetic treatments such as botox and fillers and is based in the Boutique Beauty in Cults. She suggests that prescription facial creams offer considerable advantages when skin could use a youthful boost. ‘The two main things that age the skin are smoking and sun damage. A prescription cream is proven to affect the signs of aging. They contain higher proportions of these anti-ageing products than anything you can buy over the counter, keeping the skin looking fresh, bright, evenly toned and youthful.’ www.tinyurl.com/q4hgdjr

I would love some perfume for Christmas. I don’t want to buy Chanel myself; I would much prefer to be spoiled by someone!
A holiday, somewhere nice and warm. I would love to visit the Maldives as it’s somewhere new which I haven’t visited. It’s supposed to be really nice and the warm weather would just be a bonus.

When was the last time you took a few hours off and lavished some attention on yourself? We can all use a bit of pampering from time to time. While a trip to a spa can give you a top to toe glow, you can get the same benefits at home. Lock the bathroom door, light a scented candle or two, sort out some laid back tunes and luxuriate with our pick of the best spa at home products...
Apply cleanser and moisturiser, or a treatment mask from your favourite skincare line. Soak in a hand - harvested seaweed spa bath from Irish organics brand Voya.
Start at the top, shampoo then treat your hair with your favourite deep conditioning mask. Most advise keeping them on for 20 minutes, but just stick your hair up and keep it on till your pampering session is finished, then rinse, style and marvel at the difference it makes! Dry brushing will help eliminate toxins and exfoliate all those bits we ignore. Green People have an excellent body brush with natural bristles and a handle for harder to reach places. Brush gently upwards from the feet to the heart, then up the arms and towards the chest. It helps eliminate cellulite and will invigorate your skin. £10.95 from www.greenpeople.co.uk
Apply a moisturing body lotion, then finish off with a gel manicure and pedicure when you’re dry. A kit from Gelish gives a salon finish to your nails, but is easy enough to use at home. The polish lasts for up to The oils released help stimulate blood circulation, hydrate and moisturise the skin and sooth aches and pains, so it’s no wonder seaweed has been used in top spas for decades. £16 from www.voya.ie

Smokey Eye Mascara is the perfect way to give your lashes the glamour they deserve at this time of year and every other. It gives high impact volume, length and curl with an intense black finish that will make your eyes pop.
EXTRA BRIGHT SKINCARE The goal of the ‘Extra Bright’ range is to give brighter, healthier, glowing skin. It is, in simple terms how to get your face to look good naked! The family consists of Advanced Foaming Cleanser, Advanced Moisture Lotion, Advanced Serum and Advanced Moisture Cream. The latest addition to the range is the Moisture Cream which is formulated with a ‘SuperCitrus Complex’ which not only smells wonderful, but also helps to reduce the appearance of dark spots, reduces irritation and encourages cell turnover. FOOD & DRINK
Rye & Soda The newly opened Rye & Soda on Belmont Street morphs throughout the day with a changing offering for breakfast, lunch, coffee or cocktails. From 3 till 10pm the bar restaurant space offers a globally-inspired menu of small plates, which go well beyond a traditional tapas selection. With three dozen options, from raw plates to desserts and cheese platters, there’s something to please everyone. The menu is genuinely interesting and innovative, without being too challenging. It’s the perfect mix of food to nibble and share, though substantial appetites will be more than satisfied by a couple of extra choices from the menu. We sat by the panoramic window overlooking the Academy courtyard, an ideal spot for people-watching. There’s also seating outside for warmer days. After perusing the cocktail menu, I decided to research an Edwardian Garden a delightfully heady concoction of gin, apple and lime, topped with cucumber, mint and basil soda. The menu is packed with mouth-watering choices including guinea fowl cannelloni, papillotte of wild coley and sweet treats such as a lake of forest berries or a baked rice pudding. Each dish is beautifully prepared and presented. I was torn between the salmon gravlax served with apricot poche and tzatziki and the sweet-cured fillet mignon tataki. The gravlax triumphed and was supplemented with cider chorizo, patatas bravas... and a portion of frites. You can always judge a place by the quality of their fries - Rye & Soda excelled themselves with a thinly cut chip, which I decided were too good to share. With such a global influence on the menu, it should be no surprise that Rye & Soda’s wine list also draws on some lesser-known territories. Orchid and 99 Bar & Kitchen
Playing the lounge lizard sipping endless cocktails in some of London’s swankiest clubs sounds a little too much like a boys’ posh pub crawl. ut nothing could be further from the truth for five managers from a leading Aberdeen bar company. It was more of a busman’s holiday for the band from Orchid and 99 Bar & Kitchen who’ve returned from the English capital fizzing, like alchemists, with a treasure trove of new initiatives.
Ben Iravani, managing director of Monkey Bars Ltd which runs the two venues, took four of his managers to London on a three day mission to review bars and private members’ clubs across Soho, Chinatown and Shoreditch.
Some innovations are already in place at the award-wining Orchid, home of classic, contemporary and sometimes quirky cocktails. Others are on their way, thanks to the strictly business trip
They also crafted their own gins at the City of London Distillery and discovered the magical piece of kit, a rotary evaporator, which allows artisans to re-distil their own spirits with individual flavours or herbs. Ben’s personal gin, flavoured with caraway seeds and grapefruit, is currently available
scrutinising the best that London has to offer. Everything from venue interiors and atmosphere to service style, menus and ingredients came under the microscope in the quest to raise the bar and deliver the ultimate cocktail experience in Aberdeen.
in Orchid - one of the few Scottish bars with its own evaporator. Look out for the results of their experiments soon. At 99 Bar and Kitchen the new music based menu features tongue-in-cheek cocktails - eg the Paolo Flirtini, It’s Wraynin’ Men!

Sebastian Lord from Maggie’s Grill shares his passion for cooking and his recipe for Southern Fried Chicken Burgers.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A CHEF? Food has always been a huge part of my family life. I’m half French, and started cooking with my French great grandmother when I was five. There are many talented chefs in my family, so I guess it was a natural career choice for me.

OTHER THAN YOUR OWN RESTAURANT, WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT? I really like Jack’s On the Green, which is round the back of the Bowling Club at Stonehaven. It’s a great wee café, owned by a friend. You don’t need to be a club member to eat there, either. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FOOD? We make authentic Deep South American Soul Food, with an emphasis on BBQ and great flavours. I’d say it’s rustic, soulful, and a melting pot of lots of flavours and techniques from all over the world.

With the sun gradually falling in the sky along with the temperature, my heart is always heavy at the thought of the summer ending, and that is how I feel until I find myself in the early morning sunshine, looking at clear blue skies with that refreshing nip in the air and notice the wonderfully vibrant array of colours that surround me as the leaves turn. Some may take off to see New England in the ‘fall’ but for me, it’s time to make my pilgrimage to Speyside because here and all around Scotland we have our own spectacular show of incredible autumnal colours. In the garden too, the leaves of the otherwise bland spindle tree Euonymous Europaeus are burning bright red as are the small dense leaves

of the Berberis against the olden yellow/orange leaves of Acer Shirasawanum ‘Aureum’. The rich red berries of Pyracantha, Cotoneaster and the Rowan Tree against the green of their leaf makes for a splendid show and with many roses still in bloom we can enjoy some remaining flowers in the garden until the first frosts. But, with the autumn garden comes a few chores to be completed. It’s time to bring in tender plants and fleece those that are in the ground, trim back perennials and tidy leaves into the compost bin. This is a good time of year to divide perennials and to transplant shrubs, plant shrubs, trees and bare root roses when the ground is still warm but moist. October is also perfect for planting spring and summer flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, lilies, Allium and Crocosmia but I would suggest waiting until November to plant tulips. With chores finished, I look forward to cosying up by the heat of a crackling log fire, and maybe the transition of autumn into the winter isn’t so bad after all.

‘Back in 2007, I thought there was a need for a lifestyle magazine for Aberdeen and the North-east. I did some research and teamed up with a couple of partners to form Trend. ‘There was a perception that the city was a bit of a backwater, and we wanted to let people who live here and visitors know how great it is. It’s one of the best areas to live in the UK, but we tend to keep quite quiet about it! The North-east has so many fantastic small family-owned businesses, and there are so many things to do and see in the area, we felt the magazine was the perfect medium to showcase them. ‘The early days were challenging to say the least! It’s not easy to start a free magazine at the outset of a global recession, but we concentrated on great writing and design, coupled with building a solid distribution network. We were lucky to attract a great readership and were supported by many businesses from day one. The vast majority still advertise with us, which is a great testament in itself; Trend is proven to build local businesses. In the first year we tripled our publication print run and our distribution quadrupled.
It’s difficult to believe it’s seven years since Trend first hit the streets of Aberdeen. We asked founder and director Gill Buyers how it all began... 72
‘I’m often asked what I’d say to people considering branching out to start their own business. I say, go for it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Every time I see someone reading Trend, my feeling of pride and achievement is immense! And if you do start a business, come and talk to us about advertising!

Every time I see someone reading Trend, my feeling of pride and achievement is immense! ‘The one thing that having my own business has made me realise, is how important the people around you are. My team are a fantastic. Without the support I get from them, Trend would not be as successful as it is. All of our clients, regardless of how long they have been with us, are all treated with the same respect and we fulfil their requirements to the same high standard. ‘Trend has grown continually over the past seven years. We now sit at 108 pages and distribute 21,000 copies. We produce Trend Weddings and have an annual Wedding Exhibition. We offer a bespoke design service, which has led us to work alongside Aberdeen International Airport to produce their quarterly publication, upBEAT. Under our events banner we hold an annual awards ceremony, which celebrates the best businesses in the North-east of Scotland. We also provide an event management service for individual clients. ‘Alongside all of this, we try to put something back into the community. We offer charities support in Trend and at all of our events; last year alone we donated over £7,500 to local charities. We’re proud to be part of what makes the City and Shire such a success.’

TRAVEL & LEISURE
berdeen’s West End has traditionally been a fluidly defined area, which varies in scale and location depending on whether you’re talking to an estate agent. In shopping terms, it centres on Rose Street, Chapel Street and Thistle Street, with an outpost at Chattan Place and a second focus round about Ashley Road and St. Swithin’s Street, which we’ll cover in another issue. It’s home to a wonderful selection of small independent stores, mostly selling unusual products that you won’t find in the city’s shopping centres and with a focus on personal service. Park in the car park in Chapel Street and let’s wander... Head down Chapel Street, past Howies Restaurant, which is in the middle of an interesting refurbishment and past Ross of Chapel Street the bakers, who do a rather good Chelsea bun if you need sustenance. On the other side, Hugh Harrison Menswear is the style emporium of choice for the older gentleman about town, with a mix of premium European labels and immaculately cut ready to wear lines. Head for the upper floor of Nova which stocks a great range of kitchen kit and culinary gadgets. Downstairs has one of the best selections of cards in town, coupled with gifts and home wares. The handbags, jewellery, toiletries and scarves are worth browsing if you’re looking for a little treat. Chapel Street’s charity shops including Cancer Research, Oxfam and CLAN shouldn’t be overlooked as all carry
a range of brand new goods, and are particularly strong on gifts in the run up to Christmas. Where else can you purchase a goat, vintage clothing, and kitsch vinyl records and help a good cause at the same time? At the Union Street end, you’ll find a sprinkling of solicitors, lettings companies, estate agents and late night food joints, the latter presumably explaining why the street is often greasy underfoot. Rose Street boasts a fair selection of Indian, Thai and Meze restaurants and take-aways, many of which attract crowds of schoolchildren at lunchtime. Nearby, No+Vello offers state of the art laser hair removal at a competitive price for both men and women. John Park Jewellers is worth a visit as they hold a far larger stock than their window suggests. Colin Wood Antiques is also worth a browse, with some interesting furniture and maps on show. Next, we come to Hamish
Munro, which has newly invigorated spirit and carries an interesting assortment of clothing and footwear brands, with a contemporary flair. Crossing over, you’ll find Thistle Sports which is great for racquet sports, cricket, hockey, rugby and swimming. It’s a real sports shop, rather than a retailer of dodgy leisurewear and they’re always happy to help you find the right kit to improve your game.
Delishfish is well regarded for their fresh seafood and fish, sourced directly from the quayside at Peterhead. They’re a mine of information on interesting ways to make the most of your purchases.
77
Thistle Street offers the biggest selection of shops for the wanderer. West End Chocolates have an enticing array of chocolate treats. Bellino has one of the largest selections of decent winter boots in the city, including UGGS and Fenner & Coburn always turns up something interesting if you’re looking for a new outfit or accessories in a relaxed vein. Right next door, you’ll find the Food Story Café, which is a popular coffee and lunch spot, with a reputation for interesting soups and organic lines. On the other side of Rose Street, you’ll find Rosie Thistle’s Tea Room, where you can take a break and indulge in afternoon tea. Nearby, Straine Opticians offers a personal level of service and some cutting edge frames. Two of the city’s best known florists vie for floral dominance further along, in the shape of Flower Vogue and David’s, both have a beguiling selection of blooms. You can also pick up some of Almondine’s freshly made macaroons at number 43. On the other side, pop into Gallery Heinzel for one of the strongest selections of original contemporary art in the city, or do some shopping for a special occasion at Frox, which has a superb range of evening wear in a good range of sizes. Alternatively, Esslemonts offers two stores stocking daywear for the office and weekend. Just so no one is left out, Innocence has a fabulous selection of super-cute children and baby clothing brands, as well as gifts and toys. Further along Thistle Street, you’ll find an intriguing little row of shops including
78
Men’s Emporium, a mini-temple to good grooming and a great antique and jewellery shop which doubles as a leading restorer of china in the workroom at the rear of the shop. Lastly, a visit to Patisserie Francaise will reward you with their excellent baguettes or French pastries and tarts. Wander back to the car via Summer Street and Huntly Street. These sleepy little backwaters warrant exploration, though they are always quiet. A row of beauty and hair salons line up opposite Gilcomston Church, leading away from Union Street towards Rustico, the well-established Italian restaurant known for big portions and retro tiramisu. Further on, you’ll find Nawaab’s Tandoori, Filthy McNasty’s Pub and the Braided Fig, probably the only restaurant in town with a tree growing inside. You’ll find the well-rated Yorokobi on Huntly Street, nestled amongst some fine Georgian frontages and favoured by the city’s sushi lovers for years. So that’s our West End Wander for you - there’s something for everyone so take a look!

Travel expert Michelle Bavidge shares the highlights of the beautiful Oman... How do you like to arrive at your hotel? A 4X4 adventure vehicle or scenic speedboat trip, or perhaps you would like to paraglide onto the beach below. Getting to Zighy Bay where your retreat waits couldn’t be easier, as it is located just a two hour private transfer from Dubai to this Eco paradise. Each villa in this hotel is an oasis built of natural stone and warm woods, cloud-like beds, ergonomic pillows, and private outdoor and indoor bathrooms. Why not get refreshed outside in your own private infinity pool with a glass of something cold from your in-room wine cellar, lying within the privacy of high cobbled stone walls on your plumped up sun loungers listening to the ocean a few steps away. You will be allocated a GEM (Guest Experience Manager) who is there to cater for your every need, from dinner reservations to excursions or just extra coffee for your own espresso machine. One of the main highlights of this holiday for foodies will definitely be the dining experiences on offer at this Six Senses hotel. Breakfast is served at the Spice Market where a sumptuous Middle Eastern buffet awaits and if you want to try one

of my favourites from the breakfast menu, Turkish eggs, you will be in for a treat poached eggs, wilted spinach and chilli butter. Eat in either the Summer House for the best fine dining, providing steak and seafood delicacies which can be either enjoyed al fresco or in the candlelit restaurant.
...you will be sad to leave but feel refreshed and de-stressed and ready to book your return visit. For lighter evening meals you can opt for Zighy Bar which serves amazing tapas from an astounding menu. Alternatively you could book one of the truly unique dining experiences on offer here; Senses on the Edge is a lobster dinner served on top of the neighbouring mountain offering spectacular views over the crystal waters of the Gulf of Oman; or experience real Middle Eastern cuisine at the Shua Shack, a beach front setting in a bedouin style where you can eat lamb slow-cooked to perfection in an underground oven.
You could also enjoy private dining for two atop Zighy Bay’s wine cellar, or if all this seems a little overwhelming you can request a chef to cook on a private barbeque at the outdoor dining area of your villa. There are many adventures awaiting you, with plenty to suit the active or guests who prefer to sit back and relax. Experiences such as a sunset cruise, dhow cruise, paragliding, mountain biking, Zighy Bay hike, snorkelling, hand-line fishing, Sabatyn 4X4, scuba diving and sea kayaking are all on offer at this beautiful haven. If you do want to sit back and watch the world go by order a Gin Fizz and fruit platter from the beach bar and soak up the Arabian sun. Every guest receives the same effortless service from the moment they arrive, nothing is too much trouble at this 5 star eco-conscious hotel, you will be sad to leave but feel refreshed and de-stressed and ready to book your return visit.

More and more of us are turning our hand to creative pursuits in an attempt to reconnect with a simpler way of life. Handmade gifts are increasingly popular, with recipients appreciating the effort that goes into a unique creation - even if it is a Christmas jumper with a wonky deer motif! Give it a go with our choice of the latest craft books...
We’re smitten with this duo from www.searchpress.com Sue Stratford’s Knitted Dogs & Puppies and the feline-friendly Knitted Cats & Kittens is packed with adorable patterns for pets that don’t need fed and walked. There are many patterns suitable for beginners and it’s an idea way to use up leftover scraps of wool. At £9.99 for each book, knitted pets are much cheaper than the real thing and there’s no chance they’ll pee in your shoes. How about making adorable mini-me dolls of friends and family? That’s just one of the ideas in Jane Bull’s Crafty Dolls. This simple step by step book contains brilliant ideas for both sewn and knitted dolls, with lots of cute accessories. £12.99 from www.dk.co.uk/crafts Lots of us have the odd bit of fabric we’ve been keeping to do something with one day, so Debbie Shore’s Half Yard Heaven means that day has finally come! Crafty Things is an unusual charity design collective, producing a range of appealing interiors products and personal accessories from their base in Rubislaw Church Hall. Although some of the members have disabilities, they produce really well made products and already boast an international clientele. 88
‘Crafty Things started as a project funded by Aberdeen Council many years ago, but has been run by a team of volunteers for the past five years. Many of our members have been here since the beginning and it gives people a chance to meet and chat away while working on products’, explained Joyce Tweed, a founder volunteer. The group, which gets no outside funding whatsoever, meets twice a week, with around six or seven enthusiastic clients each day and
a bank of dedicated volunteers. The atmosphere in the studio is genuinely warm and affectionate as the members work on creating their gorgeous home and personal accessories surrounded by a neatly organised rainbow of Harris Tweeds, tartans and trimmings. They make thoughtful gifts, whether for a friend or for keeping. The sales fund the group, so customers are not only getting a delightful, well-made product, they are also supporting a good cause.
DESIGN
Jan Pearce, a textile and fashion designer who volunteers with Crafty Things added, ‘We make everything from tweed covers
Joyce Tweed enthused about why Crafty Things is so special and worthy of support, saying, ‘People who come here get a

great sense of achievement from every stage of their work. There are very few places where people with disabilities can go to learn new skills. Not only is there a supportive atmosphere, with plenty of company, but it’s a safe, social place to meet, where people can chat or discuss problems while they work. Everyone is treated the same, which is important.’
Because of the combinations of fabrics, each product we make is unique. No two Scottie Dog cushions are the same, and many of the customers seem to end up naming their dogs.’ ‘When we’re adding a new product to the range, we meet to discuss ideas, drawn from trends, new fabrics and customer feedback. When we’re designing, we try to keep our products simple, because that way we know we can produce goods to a professional standard. Everyone who’s part of Crafty Things can make all of our products, which is really important. We design for practicality, but our range also looks great and is top quality, because each product takes a while to make.’
Jan added, ‘Because the products are so good, we have a number of very supportive local stockists and people have bought items from as far afield as America, Australia and Canada. We even take commissions if a customer wants to have a piece made in a particular tartan or tweed.’ As well as the Crafty Things Facebook page, you can buy their products at Touched By Scotland, Starfish Studios in Johnshaven, Proper Clobber in Stonehaven, Eden Flowers in Aberdeen, The Pitscurry Garden Project near Oyne and Mither Tongue in Keith. You’ll also find Crafty Things stocked in Georgian Dress Hire and Phillip King, both of whom donate surplus kilt tartan to the project. Prices range from £7.50 for a corsage to around £70 for a handbag. The Scotty Dog cushions are around £45 each. As yet, Crafty Things don’t have their own website, but they’d love to hear from a volunteer who could help with this. E-mail: craftythings1@gmail.com www.facebook.com/ ScottyCraftyThings

After all, there is no better equaliser than putting every player inside a large inflatable bubble.
The Norwegians have been credited with the invention of some very popular things, from cheese slicers to paper clips, but none quite as frivolous and entertaining as their latest acclaim - Bubble Football. If you have not had the pleasure of introducing yourself to this athletic novelty, it involves taking a very old sport and playing it in a very new way. Unlike traditional football, when you go for a kick-about with Aberdeen Bubble Football, you only need a lot of energy and a desire to win - skills are optional.
90
Before the game starts, each team member suits up inside a clear sphere that leaves only their legs and feet exposed. The whistle blows, and the football pitch transforms into a game of human bumper cars. Suddenly, every attempt to get your foot on the ball results in an unexpected collision and soon the only thing rolling across the pitch is you. I took a group along to Aberdeen Bubble Football and found that spectating was every bit as fun as participating, and certainly less exhausting. You cannot help but laugh when you see legged spheres smash into each other unexpectedly before careering harmlessly into the path of more spheres and finally coming to a stop like upturned turtles or completely topsy-turvy. Scoring goals is incidental, the
only thing that you control is how quickly you can stand up before being knocked down again. If you are looking for something new for an event or a celebration, I cannot think of anyone who would not enjoy a game of Bubble Football. It may not be quite as graceful as the original beautiful game, but it is certainly a lot more amusing. Phone: 01224 742290 www.aberdeenbubblefootball.com

heartache in equal measure, the memory that still echoes the loudest from Pittodrie’s cantilevered rooftop is the 1983 victory over FC Bayern Munich, which ultimately saw Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen squad win the coveted European Cup.
For generations of fans of Aberdeen Football Club, Pittodrie Stadium has been their gathering place since 1903. Built in 1899, Pittodrie stands only five hundred metres from the North Sea, making it one of the coldest stadiums in Great Britain and a testament to the heartiness of its tenants. Football stadiums are a kind of hallowed ground - a place where thousands of strangers pass through a gate each week and instantly become part of a family. For Aberdeen Football Club, a repeat of last year’s successful season might bring a long-anticipated move to a new stadium. MARINA SCULPTS A NEW PATH culptor Marina Burt has just completed her graduate residency at Gray’s School of Art. It’s a journey that has taken her from engineering through oil painting to working in three dimensions and now it looks set to take over her family home... ‘Originally, I started oil painting and then I joined Gray’s School of Art, to learn how to paint ‘properly’. Quite unintentionally, I found myself in sculpture, becoming totally immersed and fascinated’. ‘My work develops organically. It’s a quest to find beauty and understanding, an opportunity to experiment and discover. I enjoy ceramics, fine bone china particularly, silver for its connotations and recently I’ve been working with silkworms, their silk, cocoons and the stunningly interesting moths’. ‘I have loved being a Graduate in Residence; the opportunity to use the facilities, develop ideas in a fantastic studio space, talking to and helping students. Just being there in a fabulous creative environment has been great’.
92
‘It’s a pity that studio space is so scarce, expensive and difficult to find, especially in the North-east. Unfortunately for my family, my home will be filling that need; an inevitable extension of art becoming so much of my life!’ ‘The starting point for a piece is developed through musings, exploring material properties and limitations and a slow process of experimentation. I have realised that I appreciate a kind of worn, honest, imperfect kind of beauty, full of narrative and a deeply immersive appreciation. The things that don’t quite work teach me more about my assumptions and prejudices, so it’s an iterative and highly rewarding process’. ‘Some of my work will be in the RSA in Edinburgh this December, as part of the Society of Scottish Artists exhibition. Otherwise, it lives in my garden and home and becomes part of my slightly eccentric world’. Marina is happy to discuss commissions. We have terrific support from mums and dads who see how much fun their children have learning the game.
Peter Mitchell became a valued Trend columnist nearly six years ago after 37 years on the Press and Journal, latterly as a Diary writer. For Trend, he has interviewed lots of prominent people including TV's Angela Rippon. He is also much in demand as an amusing MC and after-dinner speaker.
THE ONLY WAY IS UP FOR STUART he name of the game at Aberdeen Grammar Rugby is bringing on local talent, not recruiting expensive imports, and doing the job as lead coach this season is Inverurie’s finest, Stuart Corsar. But can he restore this proud club back to Scotland’s Premier division from which it was relegated last season? ‘It is going to be very tough as we will be meeting some excellent teams from Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Borders,’ said the bearded former prop who played for Glasgow Warriors and travelled the world with Scottish teams. ‘Our main focus is to build a structure in the next couple of years to enable us to compete at the top level.’ We met at the Rubislaw playing fields where Grammar play their home games, and which becomes a sea of youngsters, both boys and girls, on Sundays. Said Stuart, ‘We have terrific support from mums and dads who see how much fun their children have learning the game.’ ‘We are very conscious that rugby is a contact game and can look quite fierce
but we nurture the youngsters in the early stages with touch rugby.’ The game in the North-east has also received a welcome boost from the sport’s governing body, Scottish Rugby, which is investing in an academy to be based at Aberdeen University’s Hillhead Centre, with support from the city council to make part of Seaton Park available. It’s an exciting time for Stuart, especially as he is also Grammar’s development officer and will be in the thick of the action ahead. However, he is at pains to stress the values of the game he tries to pass on to all players - respect, honesty and integrity. It’s nearly 20 years since Stuart, then a pupil at Strathburn Primary in Inverurie, was introduced to the game with Garioch Rugby Club. It can take great pride in what he has achieved, albeit not without plenty of knocks along the way. ‘Just call it character building,’ he said with a smile.
