INTRODUCTION Welcome, you are watching my portfolio and I hope you will enjoy it. My best work is showcased in this document from the last few years. But first I will introduce myself to you, hello, my name is Deon van Vliet and I’m a student of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, where I follow the course Fashion & Branding. The study is about how you create or change identities brands and how you let them communicate. I have experience in different fields like graphic design, interior design, visual merchandise and concept development. I’m hoping to go on with what I do for quite some time, because I’m really passionate about what I do. I keep trying to inspire myself, just as I hope you will be inspired after seeing my portfolio.

BAGISM 6 brands, 23 students do I need to explain more. yes I do. Brands & Identity the specialisation program of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute gave us the oppertunity to give a new identity to several

brands for which you had to work in pairs. It also involves a small competition against another pair for the same brand. Our brand is Bagism, a bags brand. Basigm is fascinated by daily mass-

8

production, the common things that make everyday life easier. In the visual expression, we have applied this recognizable standard and took it to another level, the level of craftsmanship: Commonplace functionality with high-end design.

9

FASHION ALMANAC This is a box which contains different slides about different trends such as; catwalktrends, upcoming brands, colors, strores, projects and new magzines. The box is special too. Every backside of a slide is a pattern or color that will change the bag on the front, which was to inspire the designer and give new options.

10

BRANDBOOK BAGISM The brandbook of Bagism is inspired by an instruction manual. Through this medium we show the process of how a bag is made. By copying the entire manual it gives more design, high-end feeling.

11

TRENDBOOK DDB is a trendwatch agency that helped us to create a trend report. With a group of four students. We made connections that where found in newspapers, internet, Amsterdam and several magazines.

Trends are not just a color or a shape, they go much deeper. To find out why our trendbook is digital you have to discover that yourself, but it won’t be easy. We made a small box with two

12

different glasses inside, one in green and one in a red. This way you could resolve the hidden link and read it. To watch it: http://issuu.com/annabanana/docs/ trendbook_green..done22

+ONE For the introduction of the program Brands & Identity at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute we had to create a brand identity within a week with 23 people. Impossible? Nope! Our theme was connectedness.

Nowadays everybody is connected to one another in every kind of way, but it’s very superficial. We have to look closer and beyond the ordinary of our superficial eyes, because there is much more to discover in our world. The name plus one says

16

it all. Plus one means your with somebody, your connected. We blurred the logo so you have look closer and make an effort to see it. We created a website and a small movie for this brand which you can see at: http://vimeo.com/24929938

VISUAL CULTURE Visual Culture is the minor program of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. The course is about how you can communicate meaning for fashion through images, still or moving. Visual Culture is a relatively young field of study, which uses

intellectual notions of theories from cultural studies, and (post structuralist) philosophy. Central to the study on visual culture are questions about the nature of images and the crucial role that seeing and looking have for our

20

society. This minor deals specifically with how fashion is connected and constructed through the images surrounding us. We had to make several photo series and made a short fashion film.

21

EMOTIONPOSTER From the perspective of your facination you had to create 6 photo’s that involves different emotions that have an abstract relation to your theme. My fascination was birds and I translated more the behaviour in an abstract way then their appearance.

22

SEQUENCE A sequence is an abstract story that has to be told in 3 to 5 photo’s. Mine was about voyeurism, a person that is following you and you get this weird nasy gut feeling.

23 23

STORYBOOK A photographical story in 25 photo’s. The story is about a man that leaves traces, some temporarily, some permanent. Hij discovers this and systematically he stops them so he can disappear entirely.

24

SHORT FASHION FILM For the brand NON by Kim, we made a short fashion film called L’artisan. It portrays a young adult unaffected by society’s expectations, structures and logics, and instead literally creates his own. For this movie I did the art-direction. I also made a personal book about the movie in the form of a poster which you could fold. It contains my sketches, inspiration and settings of the movie and the filmposter on the back. To watch it yourself: http://vimeo.com/24659065

BY AMFI By AMFI is the Statement Store of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute that exhibits and sells products of our talents; students, teachers, alumni and friends. A community working together with the industry and society.

Every two months an entire new concept is created, which involves everything; from a new store interior, to a new graphic style and new products. The different departments work all

26

together and everyone has its own part. Mine was mostly 2D and I helped with 3D and concepting. By Amfi is a unique organisation that gives the oppertunity to students and show what it’s like to be in a real organisation.

27

SATARA & GROEIKAS Satara is an organisation that helps woman in India. With this program they educate woman to be seamstresses and give them a fair price for their labour so they can give their children a proper eductation. Groeikas works as well that way. By Amfi educates the students and invest in them, where they have the ability to grow and develop. They pass the knowledge on to the next generation of By Amfi, like a natural process. We created an abstract tree out of cardboard that would grow each time. It representaded both the concept of Groeikas and Satara.

28

ODD Every year the Amsterdam Fashion Institute offers the minor program ‘Magazines’. In this minor, students learn how to make an actual magzine. Last year it was odd, a magzine based on the theory of Six Degrees of Separation, Odd magazine explores six connections between seven people in the creative industry. Here we covered the entire store (everything but the ceiling, with the pages of the magazine.

29

RĂŠVE This was a special project, where you learned a lot about yourself and others. It started of with researching yourself and your caractaristics. We had in depth conversations with the person you would later on swap your values with to make a concept

out of it. These conversation would go about your life, your past, your future, your hopes and dreams and everything else. I worked with a girl called Annelijn and she was a bit of a dreamer that

30

loves to travel. I created this dreamworld, where she could flee to, like a journey. After finishing the concept we had to write a strategic marketingplan, create a sponsored magazine of the brand en also do something with it online.

31

RÊVE BRANDBOOK The brandbook must have a very dreamy feeling. I was inspired when you look in to the sun and get these lightflairs and for a moment you can’t see anything and you for a moment somewhere else. I tried to make this happen by using normal paper and milky transparant paper.

EVASION MAGAZINE This is a sponsored magazine for the brand rêve. Its focus is on teenage girls who want to escape reality. RÊVE WEBSITE Below you see the website we created for the brand. We intergrated our small movie, that was meant to trigger girls to do the test; which type of girl they are.

FASHION ENVIRONMENT Create a fashion enironment for a jeansbrand of choice and connect this to a different target group then they’re aiming for now, was the assignment. We had to work in pairs and chose

Kuyichi, because it’s not that well known, and it had lots of possibilities to evolve in. The new target group we connected to Kuyichi are the young urban professionals. The are fast, smooth

34

and quite materialistic. What we did is that everything in the store looked really smooth, expensive and flashy, but all the materials where sustainable or environmental friendly, because that’s what Kuyichi stands for so it would still connect.
