Victoria’s secrets The complicated golden girl of British cycling opens up in her new autobiography ‘Between the Lines’

VICTORIA PENDLETON MBE is not your typical female athlete, which probably helps explain her considerable popularity across the UK. Admired as much by the weekly glossies as she is the newspaper back pages, she transcends her sport. In 2005 she became the first British female to win Gold at the World Cycling Championships in 40 years, which she followed up with gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and another World Championship in 2007. Arriving in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games, Pendleton was on top of the world. She didn’t disappoint. In an enthralling example of track cycling, Pendleton took Gold and joined the ranks of British Olympic heroes. And then it started to go wrong. Loved by the press and the public alike, behind the scenes the cracks and strains started to show. Despite retaining her World Champion status in 2009, her shield of invincibility started to drop. Pendleton was falling out of love with her sport, the sport that had made her was starting to tear her apart. In her new tell-all autobiography, Between the Lines, Pendleton documents the considerable lows as well as the well-known highs of her career, and reveals why she almost turned her back on cycling before rediscovering her Championship winning form in 2011, the day after suffering one of her most humiliating days on the track. Rebels without a cause New Northampton Rugby League team are no more after withdrawing from the league

SIXFIELDS based Rugby League team Northampton Rebels have decided to fold ahead of their planned entry in to Championship One next summer. It emerged this month that the club were behind schedule in their attempts to become one of four new semi-professional clubs to enter the league in 2013. Northampton Town FC and Rebels chairman David Cardoza admitted his decision to pull the project hinged on concerns it would have an adverse effect on the Cobblers. “We didn’t want to launch something that had no chance of success and was not going to be competitive,” he said. “It was always of paramount importance to us that the Rugby League side didn’t impact on the football club, and we were concerned there was an increasing risk of that happening. “We spoke to the RFL who have been a big help to us, and so with regret we have agreed to withdraw. “I would like to thank everyone who has helped us so far. I am proud of the work we did to get the Rebels this far, and am truly sorry that we have had to end the adventure here.”

Shock no horror

DID you know boobs can bounce up to 14cm during exercise if you don’t wear the correct support? Unfortunately, 44 percent of women don’t wear the correct bra, which coupled with excessive breast movement, is the most likely cause of sore and tender breasts after exercise. BASKETBALL CLUB AWARDED SPORT ENGLAND GRANT Northants Basketball Club have been awarded a Sport England grant to help them establish a senior men’s team. Until now, players graduating from the club’s junior men’s team have had nowhere to progress to, but following a successful application to play in the National League this season, the club have started up in the senior ranks. The Sport England grant, which is in excess of £2,000, will help with the additional administrative and running costs associated with running a senior team.

Northants Basketball’s coaching co-ordinator, John Collins, said: “The addition of a senior men’s team is a natural progression in our development and hopefully the team will be an inspirational influence on our younger players who now will have senior players to look up to.” The Senior Men’s team will be know as ‘Thunder’, the same as the other male teams in the Club. Yoga your way out of back pain New study shows that Yoga is the cost-effective way of treating back issues

SPECIALISED group yoga classes could provide a cost-effective way of treating patients with back pain, according to the UK’s largest ever study of the benefits of yoga. The results show that the yoga intervention programme - Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs - is likely to be cost effective for both the UK National Health Service (NHS) and wider society. The study concludes

that if the NHS was to offer specialist yoga and managed to maintain the cost below £300 per patient (for a cycle of 12 classes), there is a high probability (around 70 per cent) of the yoga classes being a cost effective form of prevention and treatment. Researchers also found that those partaking in the yoga programme had far fewer days off work than those in

the control group. On average, the control group reported 12 days off due to back pain, whereas those in the yoga group had four days off. Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said: “We welcome the fact that not only has yoga been found to help people manage their back pain, but that it is also cost effective, and results in fewer sick

Eat like a champion with GB cycling’s top recipes

Expert nutritionist Nigel Mitchell reveals three of his top recipes that help fuel the world’s best athletes to the top of their sport

eam GB’s cyclists proved this summer that they are amongst the world’s leading athletes as they dominated proceedings in the velodrome at the London 2012 Olympics. Such feats don’t happen by accident however, and are the result of meticulous planning down to the finest of details, which is where Nigel Mitchell, Head of Nutrition ‘It is essential to maintain for British Cycling, comes the optimum weight to in. after a successful summer. “It is essential to maintain the optimum weight to power ratio for each rider for peak performance,” said Mitchell. “For some, every extra pound is an extra pound to push around the track, and for others, increased weight is needed to keep them at their highest power level.” To help him keep Team GB and Team Sky in tip-top condition at events around the globe, Mitchell has been using new gadget Thermomix, a multifunction, cooking, steaming, mixing, prepping, all-singing, all-dancing kitchen machine. “I use Thermomix as it’s so fantastic for consistency, quality, and control and I decided it was perfect to use in my mission to keep our top cyclists at their best for the Tour de France and the London 2012 Olympics,” he added. “Thermomix helps me control exactly what athletes are getting from each meal. “Team chef Søren Kristiansen and I find that Thermomix allows us to cook quickly and easily and it’s doubled our productivity. We can even use it in hotel rooms when the team is travelling to international events.” Ingredients: 20 g flaxseeds = linseeds, 20 g sesame seeds, 40 g sunflower seeds & 40 g pumpkin seeds Method: Grind the seeds together and store in an air tight container in the fridge. Use within one week. Try adding a tablespoon of ground seeds to your porridge, cereal or smoothie in the morning. Add a sprinkle to your salad or soup at lunch, or on a curry or stir-fry.

East like a champion: Gluten-free gnocchi Some of the Team GB and Team Sky cyclists avoid wheat during intense training periods and long races so these gluten-free gnocchi are the perfect alternative. This recipe was developed by Nigel for Ed Clancy MBE, Olympic Gold Medal winner and five times World Champion. Ingredients: 50 g parmesan, in 3 chunks, 200 g floury potatoes in 2cm cubes e.g. Desiree, 200 g sweet potatoes in 2cm cubes, two large (60g each) free range eggs, 400 g gluten free plain flour, optional one tsp fine sea salt. Method: Grate the parmesan and set aside. Steam the potatoes and sweet potatoes until tender. Mash the potatoes, parmesan, eggs and flour together and knead for 30 seconds. Roll the potato mix on a generously floured countertop into long rolls measuring 1 to 1½cm in diameter, gently press the top with the tines of a fork to create a ridge pattern (or roll down a gnocchi board), then snip into 2cm long pieces. Bring a pan of salted water to a rolling boil, add the gnocchi and cook until they float plus five minutes longer (gluten free gnocchi take longer to cook than wheat flour gnocchi). Drain and serve.

Nigel’s serving suggestions: Serve straight away with freshly made pesto or tomato sauce. Or you can do alternate layers of cooked gnocchi and tomato sauce, spinach, basil and mozzarella and bake it in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes at 180°C until the cheese is golden and the sauce is bubbling.

High energy rice & quinoa Rice provides the carbohydrate part of this dish whilst quinoa’s protein content is superior to any other grain; it contains all nine essential amino acids. Our bodies cannot make these so we must get them directly from our food. Quinoa is also high in lysine, an amino acid important in tissue growth and repair, as well as being a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, copper and iron. Ingredients: One litre water for steaming, one generous pinch sea salt, 100g red or black rice, 100g basmati rice, 100g quinoa. Serves four to six. Method: Steam all together until cooked and transfer to a large serving bowl and stir. Serve hot or cold on its own or as an accompaniment to a meal. Nigel’s serving suggestions: Add chopped dried apricots and salad leaves, or add chopped hard-boiled eggs for extra protein. Or you can add minced shallot, cubes of feta cheese, chopped mint and parsley and a few olives if you wish, then stir with some balsamic dressing. Serve on mixed green salad leaves. Also goes great with a curry or stew.

The final month of our abs and stomach master class sees Rob Harris explain the toughest exercise of them all: The tick-tock

cross the last two editions, I’ve shown you how to flatten your stomach and strengthen your abs in a range of ways that will help you perform everyday actions in a more efficent manner, as well as help you look good.

Build up gradually The exercises displayed in issues one and two will help you move from a relative novice when it comes to abs strength, to a near expert providing you follow the training programmes on a regular basis, building up gradually as you feel yourself getting stronger.

The ultimate corset exercise This month’s featured exercise, the tick-tock, will only be possible if you have already followed an abdominal strengthening programme, it is the ultimate exercise for the core and abdominals. In issue one, I told you how in real life muscles do not work in isolation from each other but in integrated patterns simultaneously. By choosing functional

exercises that replicate natural human movement patterns we challenge the body’s systems as a whole unit, mimicking exactly how the body should work in everyday movements or sporting actions.

Tick-tocks Tick-tocks provide an intense corset workout by doing just this, but it adds several components to a corset exercise that crunches and leg raises fail to do. Tick-tocks incorporate static contractions, with a component of rotation and some lateral flexion. Couple that with the role of gravity and an angle that can be unfamiliar to some, and a sense of balance and kinesthetic spatial awareness, and it becomes one of the hardest, most intense work outs you can give the corset region. It can add core strength, it can add rotational power, it is impressive to some to watch and it can help strengthen the back stabilisers. Be mindful of your stomach contractions with this exercise. As soon as you get into the starting position, you will have to tighten your abs and keep them tight throughout. If you do not do this, you run the risk of injuring your lower back. Start at four to six repetitions for one set, then progress to two sets of eight to 10 reps.

Abdominals Month Three: The Tick-Tock Step one Hang below a pull-up bar or chains, with you arms bent to 45 degrees at the elbow, as if you were about to do a chin or pull-up.

Step two Using your abdominal strength, flex your hips and pull your feet up to parallel to the floor, so you legs are out straight in front of you, as shown below.

Step three Keeping your elbows bent at 45 degrees, bend your hips so your legs point straight up, and your back is parallel with the floor, as show on the right

Step four Squeeze your abs tight to support your torso, keeping your back flat, as you let both legs rotate down to your right. Then rotate your legs to the left.

Step five Continue alternating back and forth as if your legs were the arms of a clock. Alternatively, to make it harder, bring your legs and body back to the start position of step one each time, then repeat.

Sore, tight muscles just need a little bit of self TLC

We all get aches and pains after exercise - especially when we’ve pushed it, but there’s an easy way to make them go away

W

e can all associate with the tightness that hard exercise produces, whether that be from marathon training or a long day in the garden. It is an inevitable consequence of asking your body to do more than it is used to. The muscles are worked harder and stretched more causing micro trauma. This is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or ‘Soreness is an inevitable DOMS for short. consequence of asking As your muscles become used to a certain you body to do more than exercise the reaction will it is used to’ become less. However it is also a reason why so many good intentions of starting to get fit fall after the first day with the comment – ‘Surely hurting myself to this degree cannot be good’. On one level you are right. If you are so tight it hurts to walk then you have probably overdone it and a toned down next session would be advisable. However there is a way in which you can help yourself to recover better and feel less sore (without the torture of an ice bath!).

Stretching & self massage Stretching is of some benefit but massage of the areas most affected is a better way of loosening the tightness felt in the muscles. Obviously a professional massage therapist will be the best route but there are several ways to work on yourself as ‘self massage’ - finding the

tight bits and rubbing them is a natural and intuitive process. However it is often hard to find a comfortable position to get at the appropriate areas and most peoples fingers are not up to the task of rubbing into muscles for several minutes. It is hard work if you are not used to it. The use of aerosol cans, rolling pins or, as in the pictures, specifically made massage rollers and balls are a much easier method. You can find the areas more comfortably and apply better pressure for longer.

Technique I would suggest approaching the job in two stages. Firstly roll the roller or implement along the length of the muscle, altering the angle to work the inside and outside as well as through the middle. Do this 10 to 12 times and relatively slowly so take 15 seconds to work form one end to the other. It does not matter if you work bottom to top or visa versa. Secondly - during these 10 rolls you will identify some particularly sore areas. These areas require some special attention and after the 10 rolls return to the sorest areas and linger on them, gently rocking from side to side over them as you slowly roll over them. This process should take 30 to 45 seconds per area. This sort of technique should be worked through every other day, not every day. The repairing tissue needs time to heal and bashing it every day is like picking at the scab.

Massage techniques Hamstring roller Sitting on the floor, place the roller beneath the hamstring. Using your hands on the floor behind you, lift your bottom off the floor to apply the pressure to the hamstring – and roll! For that extra bit of fun, cross your other leg over the knee and work on how straight the knee is to alter the depth the pressure gets.

Calf roller The technique is the same as for the Hamstring above but the roller is of course under the calf. Cross your legs at the ankle for that extra bit of pressure and play with how much the foot is pulled up or pointed away to get the right spot.

IT band roller The band over the outside of the thigh is quite often overlooked but is a common area of tightness that leads to several knee and hip issues. Lay on the side to be worked with the roller under the outside of the thigh. Prop yourself on your elbow and use your arm and other leg to help roll yourself up and down from the knee to the hip. You may wish to have the top leg in front of the bottom leg for better stability (the other side to that shown in the picture).

Recover Common stretches continued Quad roller and front of hip This is a slightly tricky technique to master but one that is well worthwhile. Propped on your elbows, roll from the knee to the hip, again altering the angle from side to side and, changing how far you pull the leg in from knee to bum for stretch.

Ball gluts Sitting with your knee held to your chest and the foot crossed over the other leg, place the ball in to the bum muscle and fiddle with the position to find the sorest part. It will be obvious when you find it! Lean over onto the ball and wiggle!

Don’t have a roller in your sports bag? Don’t let that stop you getting in to those tight spots. Trigger Point rollers are the best for the job, as they mimic thumbs and elbows, commonly used by physios and masseurs to massage tight muscles, and are hard but with a soft foam coating. A

s a sports physician I have been lucky enough to work with some great athletes over the years and to be part of the team behind the team in London was a highlight and a privilege. The clue as to what that involves is in the title, as I pointed out to a gymnastics coach not long ago - ‘Back-room staff’. We are in the back room, unseen, unheard, but each hopefully playing our part in the success of athletes. A simple thank you is all we need and the satisfaction of a job well done. To do the job it takes a multidisciplinary

Simple? Not always. Building a team behind the team can take careful managing at times. I have been fortunate to work in two great teams. With football, managed by Hope Powell and looking after the England and latterly the Team GB women’s side. And with Gymnastics, managed by Louise Fawcett, who is head of the science and medicine department

Seeing footballer Kelly Smith return from injury to play on the world stage at the Olympics and for the team to play at Wembley in front of 70,000 will remain a wonderful highlight for me. Sadly the team did not progress beyond the quarter final stage. We may have lost the match but as the Mirror’s Chief Sports Writer Oliver Holt pointed out, we won the argument, proving we deserved to be there. Let’s hope we can have a Team GB women’s football team again in Rio in four years time. The upside of not progressing with the football team was that I could return

to the Olympic Village and be there for the gymnasts. Seeing Beth Tweddle win her medal at long last on bars was a fitting finale for a woman who has dedicated her life to gymnastics. Like Kelly, Beth had worked extremely hard to come back from injury. Every one of the many people who worked with both athletes played a significant part to ensure they had their Olympic journey in 2012. 2012’s athletes have certainly inspired me and I have no doubt will inspire a generation. In helping others achieve we achieve so much more for ourselves.

What is the job of a Chiropodist/ Podiatrist?

“A Chiropodist is what a foot specialist used to be called in this country, but the scale of practice was limited in comparison to Podiatry. It was treatment of nail conditions, skin conditions and infections. “Podiatry was something they were doing in America, which had an extended scope of practice. They did some surgery, x-rays and biomechanics. The schools of Podiatry started to embrace some of the Podiatric skills. You tend to either specialise in surgery or biomechanics, and I do the latter.”

What would be a typical biomechanics case?

“There are loads I suppose. A few years ago most of my biomechanics cases were referred by a practitioner. But nowadays people come in and say, ‘my knees hurt, I think I need some orthotics,’ because they have researched it or googled it, and they think something is wrong with their gait (your walking or running action and foot movement), or they want their gait checked. “A typical case? Heel pain, shin pain and knee pain are quite common. I get a lot of referrals for back complaints from people who are treating backs, who are finding their work is being undone by poor foot and leg mechanics, which help stabilise back mechanics and keep it stronger.”

When someone comes in with back or knee pain for example, what is the process you go through? “I’ll ask them what is going on, and I will watch them walk, and watch them run if I felt I needed to, and then I would give them a biomechanical once over, which is how the shoulder is moving, how the back is moving and

how the pelvis is moving, plus legs and feet. I’d look at the level of the pelvis for limb length, and then I’d look at a few joint angles, ranges of movement and quality of movement and flexibility, particularly with the feet. “And then look for anomalies in the feet that trigger foot and leg mechanical issues. “That is the assessment side. If they wanted to continue further treatment, I’d do an in depth mechanical assessment, look at things in details and take impressions of the feet for orthotics and shoe inserts.”

What are the treatments?

“Broadly speaking you are looking at improving flexibility, strength, posture, core strength and mechanics. I give advice on some of those, and I have other people I work with who are very good at giving further advice on some of those. But I stick to influencing foot mechanics.”

How common is it that people could benefit from orthotics? “I only get people in here with complaints, so you’d have to grab a load of people off the street to get an answer for that! But people coming to my practice could regularly benefit, I suspect a lot of the population have an underlying mechanical issue. Some people are more active than others so it flags up earlier in life, if they are not then it flags up later in life as excessive wear on the joint or structure. Most people will have a mechanical issue, it just depends what they want to do with their bodies and how they want to push them.”

What are the causes of biomechanical issues?

“Mostly it is genetic, we inherit a structure that will work in a certain way.

Health & Fitness - The Expert “So the skin defends itself by thickening, which is fine, as long as it doesn’t become uncomfortable and start splitting. You need to try and keep the skin moist by applying creams.”

Any tips for keeping your feet in tip-top shape?

FOOT FAULT: Podiatrist Adam Costain takes casts of a patient’s feet in order to make some orthotics.

Footwear doesn’t cause too many problems, though I do get a steady trickle of business from running shoe shops who advise badly on shoes (Adam stresses not a local one!). “There was a particular shoe shop that had a very enthusiastic employee, who saw a foot pronating (rolling in), and issued anti-pronatic shoes to a foot type that didn’t need it. “Mainly it is problems with flexibility, core stability…. A combination of things.”

And what about the chiropody side?

“I treat hard skin, corns, infections, ingrowing toe nails – I don’t do bone surgery but I do nail surgery. We have a full range of verruca treatments as well. Fungal infections such as athlete’s foot are very common in feet, as are hard skin, and verruca’s. Ingrowing toe nails are less common. “

What measures can people take to prevent all of those? “Fungal infections love a warm, moist environment so

avoid that, which is difficult with your feet. Basically, change your footwear, don’t use the same shoes over and over. Use natural fibered socks, and make sure you nip these things in the bud. If you notice your foot starts getting itchy then get some anti-fungal cream on it. “A lot of ingrowing toe nails are related to poor foot mechanics, because people will roll off the inside of the foot and push on the side of the nail, pushing it in to the next toe. That pinching action can push the nail in to the flesh of the toe. “Ingrowing toe nails are usually blamed on bad nail cutting, but I haven’t seen many at all, probably one, that was due to bad nail cutting.”

And hard skin problems?

“Everybody gets that. Hard skin is there to protect. Workmen get hard skin on their hands because they are working with machinery, but if they didn’t get hard skin, it would just blister and you would be unable to work.

“Keep an eye on your feet, look at them more and get them out more. People don’t like their feet so they tuck them away and then they get even worse. “I lived in the Caribbean for a couple of years, and the first thing I noticed out there was how much more I saw people’s feet. If they were out more they would be much healthier. We would be looking at them and any problems they had we would be aware of sooner, and we would attend to them, because they are on display. So get your feet out more!”

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

“Seeing the benefit people get from the work you do with them, particularly children. “I had a girl once who kept tripping over because her feet turned in. Her mother used to have to hold her hand when she crossed the road. “And for her, I gave her something in her shoes that encouraged her to turn her legs out, and those combined with exercises straightened her feet out, so that was really satisfying. “And then when people come in and tell you they have been suffering for years and it has restricted them so much, if you can relieve them of that, then the world opens up for them and they are so greatful. That feels good. That is the real feel good thing.” Adam Costain was talking to Steve Walsh

London Olympics have already boosted sports participation figures, says charity A GOLDEN summer of sport has already boosted our desire to get active, according to statistics released by sport and leisure management charity Fusion Lifestyle. During the period of 27th July to 12th August, when the Olympic Games were running, Fusion reported a 26 percent increase in visits to it’s centres, measured like for like against the same dates in 2011. Whilst it’s still too early to tell

whether this rise in sporting participation levels will be maintained post Olympics and Paralympics, it’s a positive indication that people are taking the initiative to try out new sports and increase their fitness. “We have seen a good increase in participation since the Olympics and this has been across the board, ranging from junior gymnastics and badminton to a rise in casual swimming,” said Steph

e are aiming to be the best in the World,” says Steve Halsey, assistant coach of the England Women’s Rugby Under 20s squad, in a statement that explains why he is frantically looking at areas that could improve his side by the marginal percentages required to finally win the World Cup. Halsey’s side have lost to New Zealand in the final of the previous three World Cups, and frankly, they’re sick of being second best. Getting on a trampoline isn’t the first thing that would spring to mind when attempting to turn those silver medals in to gold, but for Halsey, who is married to Great Britain’s first female trampoline Olympian, Jaime Moore (now Halsey), the decision to bring his squad to Northampton Trampoline Centre for a day of intensive coaching was a simple one. “From my experience of seeing high-level trampolining, there is a massive cross over between the two sports,” he says. “For me it is looking at bringing in other areas that are going to bring marginal improvements in performance. If we can improve the speed and shape of our lineout jumpers and their ability to catch the ball under pressure, it is going to improve our lineouts. “We are aiming to be the best “

in the world, for a long period of time, and it is the two or three percent difference between being a couple of points down in the game with two or three minutes to go and nailing that lineout - because they can keep their shape under pressure when they are fatigued - that could be the difference between coming short at the World Cup Final, which they have done the last

DON’T LOOK DOWN: A member of the England Elite Performance Squad practises jumping (above), while another does so with a 5kg weight (below) three times, or actually winning it.” Gymnasts are well known for their incredible strength and spatial awareness, having to hold static positions to impress judges or maintaining positional sense while twisting and somersaulting multiple times over, and Halsey, a PE teacher at Caroline Chisholm school, has pinpointed those areas as priorities of improvement for his troops. “The conditioning aspect of trampolining is massive,” he adds. “In terms of core strength, using your glutes (your bum muscles) and activation to have that confidence and ability to maintain that strength in the air.”

When it comes to elements that will take place on the pitch, Halsey believes he has finally found the perfect training tool to help improve his squad’s lineout. Constant variation between how someone is lifted in the set-piece and how the ball is thrown make it difficult to break down elements to improve, which is where the advantages of the trampoline come in. “Having the trampoline makes it possible to isolate the jump on it’s own, and allows us to work on that,” he explains. “Without using the lifters, it would be impossible to get that shape and identify it in that way. BACK DOWN TO EARTH: England’s Sarah Hunt ends up on her back as she and the rest of the England U20s Squad are put through their paces skills on the trampoline allows us in a safe environment to really work on those skills in a situation that makes it relevant to the environment they are going to be in.” Northants Trampoline Academy director Harvey Smith, who leads the session along with Great Britain 2012 Olympic coach and wife Tracy Whittaker-Smith, believes trampolining is a worldleader in the areas that the rugby team are trying to improve. “I think with the loading you are taking on your body, it is one of the strongest sports, in terms of how strong you have got to be in your core,” says Smith. “Trampolinists have to be really strong, because they are controlling 13 times their body weight at the bottom of the trampoline, so their core strength is massively important. “So if you find there is a deficiency in their core stability,

so it hugely important.” And Smith, who has coached Northamptonians Penny Mitchell and Amanda Harris to the GB team in the last six months, doesn’t take long to identify the weaknesses the rugby side will need to work on. “You can see quite big deficiencies in their core stability and balance, which is one of the reasons why they are coming,” he adds. First up for the squad is a round of testing to find their base levels, a timed 10 jump test that will identify which are the strongest and weakest members of the group. The higher the time, the better the jumper as they are producing more power through their legs, and losing less energy through a strong core area. The squad are then put through their paces by Jaime Halsey, in a conditioning circuit that would make you wince. Sweat drips and a few expletives fly as the girls begin to feel the burn: “Some of the basic core exercises that they do week in week out are so hard,” back rower Sarah Hunt tells us. “There were a few wobbles. It just shows you that it is something we need to work on, and the little details within our game of how we can progress and how we can become the best in the world.”

There are plenty of thrills, spills, laughs and curses across the session, but Steve Halsey is delighted with the progress his side have made across the morning, and since they first visited the club a year ago. “Just looking back at some of the clips and data from some of the testing, all of them have made improvements in terms of their times and power they can produce,” he explains. “You can just see the confidence in terms of when they started the session to when they ended it in terms of their ability to jump and maintain that shape.

and the players have worked incredibly hard. But for them, it is the same information coming in a different way, and allows them to develop and learn techniques by having that fresh stimulus. “We have really been able to

identify some specific skills within the actual lineout jump, which are really difficult to isolate when you have got different people lifting and throwing the ball in.” An exhausted Hunt points out to TRENDHFL, who couldn’t help laughing at some of the jumpsgone-wrong, that it is not as easy as it looks. “It’s really been out of the ordinary, some of the stuff we have been put through,” she says. “The jumping and the trampoline skills take an enormous amount of skill but it is really transferable in to what we have to do in Rugby and in our linesouts in terms of our body management in the air, our core stability. “It seems really, really easy, the fact we are just going to go and jump on a trampoline, but it is really hard work and some of the skills we have been taught are invaluable to us to help with rugby. “The skills that the trampolinists have, we definitely need to improve on in rugby. Some of the things that are easy and basic, we found extremely hard. “It is definitely hard work, I think you could tell by the look of us after two hours, sweating buckets! “It is definitely hard work, they make it look easy. You see it on the TV and they are jumping, doing twists, doing turns, and we are struggling to stay in the same place up and down. “We did testing, a 10 bounce test for height and everyone improved by the end. So all the advice – looking at our foot movement, our core strength, led to an improvement by everyone at the end, which shows we are making progress.” For Halsey, a former London welsh, Bedford and Rugby Lions player, it is something that could help the more established men’s side of the game, though he is skeptical as to whether his team’s work will roll over to the men’s squad. But he is sure of the benefits this type of training has. “I’d like to think so,” says Halsey, when asked if trampoline training

EYES ON THE PRIZE: England players practise their high hand skills on the trampoline could be included in the men’s programme. “Whether or not they have got the time to come and do these sorts of things, I don’t know. “They’ve got added pressures with competition phases in terms of the premiership and things like that. “It is very difficult for them to potentially dedicate entire days or mornings just to one aspect. “But for me, it is those one or two percentage improvements in performance, especially the set-piece, that have a knock on effect in terms of everything else. “Whether that be the attacking side of the game or the defensive side of the game. All of a sudden, if you are very strong in the lineout, teams can’t kick the ball for touch off a penalty, because you are going to nick the ball off them.

“Which means straight away, rather than them making 40 or 50 meters from a penalty, they have to go somewhere else. It brings in that other aspect of defense as well as attack, that first phase dominance being really important.” The acid test for Halsey’s side comes in two months time, when World Champions New Zealand visit for a three test series. Despite England having had plenty of success over recent years, the Kiwi’s are the team they are targeting, ready to knock them off the perch. “There is that unequivocal drive in the group that they are not happy with just winning a six nations, or a nations cup, or European championship,” says Halsey. “There is that real drive to be the best in the world.” www.rfu.com

There are many different ‘looks’ this year ranging from military to oriental, but one of the main trends for autumn is the ‘country look’ - luxurious, textured knits, tweed blazers, padded jackets and gillets. These are worn with slim legged jeans or trousers tucked in to riding style boots. For a smarter more sophisticated occasion, the Peplum top shows off an hour glass figure when teamed with a pencil slim skirt, or choose a Peplum dress. Winter florals are a huge fashion statement this year, dark and over sized for the colder seasons. Colours are rich with deep purple, petrol blue and magenta high on the list of must haves. We will still see the normal blacks and greys, but they are

likely to be worn with floral scarves or large chain jewellery in gold and sliver. Animal prints will also be very popular, in skirts, trousers and tops. For a cool look, team these with stonewashed denim or military jackets and coats. Accessories can play a big part when creating an individual style. Large handbags, lots of bangles, scarves and pumps or wedges can make you stand out in the crowd. Look out for long wool over-the-knee socks as well. For the guys, this autumn will also reflect the country style with tweed blazers and coloured chinos worn with smart brogue boots. Again a great deal of textured knitwear will be en vogue, with the main colours being navy, oatmeal, deep plum and camel. Outerwear should be less casual with raincoats, wool crombies and pea coats becoming very popular.

Moroccan Oil is one of the all-time greatest products for your hair. You can put it on your hair whilst its wet and blow-dry it for a smooth finish. And not only that, but it can also be used as a serum for smoothing out the end of your hair. It’s not cheap at around £30 for a 100ml bottle, however you only need a small amount! If you ask me it’s a sound investment for fabulous winter locks!

During the winter, skin is always at its driest. A great product I have found is Nivea Soft Intensive Moisturising Cream. And at only £4.50 for a 200ml pot it’s great value too! They also do a smaller handbag version, for on the go. It has been my personal life saver – with no colours and fragrance free, it’s perfect for even the most sensitive of skins!

Tanning A great way to keep up your summer glow is by faking it. I’m not talking orange and patchy though! Natural looking and glowing is the way forward. I’ve tried them all, so here’s my list of how to get a perfect tan… Fake bake original tan cream is by far the best tanning product out there. It comes in an easy to use bottle and with gloves which make it really easy to apply. The cream colour is scarily dark at first, but once it’s been rubbed in it looks much better! It develops over 6-8 hours and once you’ve showered you’re left with an even, very natural looking, streak-free tan.

St Moriz foam tan is a cheap and cheerful wash on/ wash off tan. This needs to be applied with a fake tan mit (which can be found at most beauty shops) It’s very easy to use with a pump action bottle and provides a great natural looking colour.

Spray tans are super popular, and the quality all depends on the product used. Some of the best out there are: Fake bake, Sienna X and Su-Do. To ensure you get the most of your spray tan, talk to a professional for pretan and aftercare advice.

For a serene shave, jump in the shower

Clueless when it comes to shaving? Our step by step guide is here to help A survey of 2,000 men by leading shower manufacturer Mira has found that the majority of men in the UK were never properly taught how to shave. The result is that mess on your chin and irritated skin on your neck! But help is at hand: In a bid to help British men improve their blade skills and get a barber shop finish, Mira and expert male grooming salon Melogy have teamed up to tell TRENDHFL readers how to get a more accurate, nicer shaving experience. “Before you get in the shower really is the worst time to shave,” Carmelo Guastella, Melogy’s founder, tells us “In order to ensure the perfect shave, it’s vital that the hair is supple, as this helps to avoid skin irritation. By just making a few changes to your daily routine you can vastly improve your shave and your skin as a whole.”

Seven steps to the perfect shave....

The shower is the ideal environment for shaving; the steam combined with water releases natural oils in the skin to make your whiskers softer and easier to work with. Pick up a non-steam mirror so you can work with full visibility. The more time you spend on the preparation, the better the shave. Prepare the beard area with shaving oil which protects the skin from the blade and helps to soften the hair, lessening resistance. Always consider growth, thickness and density. The more horizontal the hair growth, the higher risk of irritation. Thicker hair will

be more resistant to the blade and requires much shorter blade strokes. Lastly, the denser the area of hair growth, the harder it will be for the blade to cut through. As the density changes so must your blade speed. Use a bristle brush to smooth, soften and lift the hair, whilst also exfoliating the skin. This will also allow the blade to move more easily, giving a closer shave. Some men are able to shave against the hair growth with no problems, but others can’t. Shave first with the grain, re-wet the face and go across the grain - only if your skin

can take it re-wet again and go against. Remember, always rinse the blade under the shower head before shaving and between each stroke. Stretch the skin and follow the hair direction as the primary cause of irritation and razor bumps is shaving against the grain. Banish post shave laziness. Once you have completed your shave apply a soothing moisturiser which is easily absorbed into the skin. This restores the barrier function which is lost as a result of shaving and also slows down the ageing process by encouraging cell regeneration.

See for yourself at Silverstone British championship returns to the county for the penultimate round of competition BARELY a month goes by when there isn’t some topclass motorsport to be enjoyed in the county - and the next 30 days are no different. Silverstone welcomes back the UK’s leading National two wheel championship, the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, for another round of immense two-wheel action across the weekend of September 28th-30th, in what is the penultimate showdown of the season.
