TREND Notes We round-up the best bits to come across the TREND radar
Bye bye to the traditional dye New Adidas and Stella McCartney initiative the next step in eco conscious clothing DID you know that the equivalent amount of water in the Mediterranean Sea is used every two years just to dye clothing? In fairness, nor did we, but it seems that rather shocking statistic has been playing on the minds of Adidas and Stella McCartney, as they’ve decided to find a better way to create the colours for our clothes. ‘DryDye’ technology is the first of it’s kind, Adidas claim, as it doesn’t use a single drop of our planet’s natural resource. In an effort to reduce water consumption, energy use and a need for chemical use, Adidas created the new process, which uses pressurized CO2 in place of water to dye t-shirts and other garments. The first commercially available t-shirt off the production line using the DryDye process is part of the corner stone of Stella McCartney’s Autumn/ Winter collection for 2012, and fuses sustainability, performance and style. Featuring a batwing cap sleeve and a round scoop neck, with a striking leopard print on the front in dark blue and white, it can be layered over a number of styles from the collection to create your desired look. “It’s been incredibly exciting for me to work with and have access to this amazing new technology,” said Stella. “The sustainable message behind it is very important to me and I hope to work with it more in the future.” Available now at the Adidas by Stella McCartney store, Fulham Road, London and at www.adidas.com/stella

Find your perfect Soulmate Food proves to be the best friend of some of GB’s top Olympic athletes THERE’S been plenty of publicity surrounding the little quirks that helped our Olympic athletes strike bronze, silver and gold this summer, and we’re happy to add to it. Step forward Soulmate Food, who fuelled boxers Nicola Adams, Luke Campbell and Anthony Joshua to gold in London. In fact, the entire GB boxing squad used personally prepared menus from the company to help recover from training sessions and crucially, to maintain the optimum weight for their category. Tasty sounding favourites of the boxers include honey roast nuts with superberries (a mix of nuts and seeds roasted in manuka honey with goji berry, blueberry and cherry mix), tandoori salmon with hot and sour noodles, cajun chicken burgers with sweet potato wedges, broccoli and barbecue dip, firecracker fillet of beef with vegetable fried rice and the anti-oxidant rich SuperGreens smoothie. The Ultrabook
The world’s lightest notebook hits the UK market WEIGHING in at less than a kilogram and just three millimetres thick in places, it’s hard not to be taken back by the new ‘best notebook ever’. It doesn’t take much to get us excited at the thought of a new gadget at TRENDHFL HQ, but this one made us sit up and take note more than usual. Made from carbon fibre, computer firm Gigabyte have re-written the rule book when it comes to designing notebooks with the X11, or the Ultrabook as it’s known. “The ultra sleek outline showcases laptop craftsmanship at its best,” they tell us. “The carbon fibre material keeps the X11 incredibly lightweight and astonishingly strong and durable at the same time.” Test results have shown the specific
strength of carbon fibre laptops are 600 percent higher than the aluminium version you’ve been using, meaning the X11 is more resistant of compression and external forces. Every X11 is hand-made to ensure enduring quality, while the keyboard is unusually large for an 11 inch notebook. It has a multifunction touch pad (to compete with Apple’s Airbook), while Gigabyte took inspiration from the exhausts of sports cars when designing the computer’s air vents, which they say allows heat to be exported more efficiently. Inside it packs a punch too, powered by Intel’s third generation Core i5 or i7 processor and with a lightening-quick 128GB solid state drive. uk.gigabyte.com

Make it hot or cold in the bedroom Help your body sleep better for longer by adjusting the temperature of your bed
SLEEP experts in the UK and America believe one of the major factors that dictates whether you sleep well or poorly is the temperature of the area in which you sleep, not necessarily the temperature of the room. With that in mind, Climsom have released their revolutionary mattress topper, a temperature adjustable mattress cover that is designed to
revolutionise your sleep quality. “When you go to sleep, your set point for body temperature -the temperature your brain is trying to achieve - goes down’, explains Craig Heller, PhD, professor of biology at Stanford University, “Think of it as the ‘internal thermostat’. If it’s too cold, or too hot, the body struggles to
achieve this set point.” The Climsom is a thin quilted cover that sits on top of your mattress and under your sheet that allows you to set and regulate the exact temperature of your sleeping area via a small remote control. A series of fine tubes within the cover carry water, which can either cool down or heat up, depending on your
own personal preference. Experts say that the temperature should be between 18 and 22 degrees C. Climsom chiefs encourage anyone who think a temperature controlled sleep environment could benefit them to take up a 14-day free trial. Prices start from £299 for a single bed. www.personalcooling. co.uk. Twitter.com/TRENDHFL

Diet&Nutrition
Create super food for on the move to improve your diet
Poor quality, quick fix foods may be tempting when we are short on time but they are a fast lane to poor health and diet
The Knowledge
T
he old phrase ‘you are what you eat’ still stands the test of time. What we eat affects our wellbeing, weight control, energy levels and mood. However, with the pace of the modern world, endless meetings, commuting and deadlines it can perhaps be all too easy to eat anything that merely ‘Our fast paced world satisfies hunger. On the face of it there means it is too easy to eat appears to be little issue anything that merely satis- with this but consider the poor quality food fies our hunger but gives quick, eaten over weeks, months us poor quality nutrition’ and years. Matched with the continuum of lack of time and struggle to exercise, it is no wonder waist lines and subsequent obesity levels continue to rise.
Processed carbohydrates Food sources high in processed, refined carbohydrates such as white bread or white rice provide little in way of nutrients and fiber compared to whole grain alternatives. Consumption of refined carbohydrates leads to an energy spike followed by a slump. This vicious cycle continues, leading to further refined convenient foods to satisfy diminishing energy levels. Subsequently far more calories are consumed in comparison to a whole grain diet. Furthermore, highly processed foods contain more additives, can be very high in sodium and contain many other undesirable ingredients that can
12
Facebook.com/TRENDHFL
read like a list of chemicals on the ingredients list. Surely it does not seem natural that some processed foods have such a long shelf life that they could seemingly never rot?
Improve performance One simple way to improve performance at work is to reevaluate nutrition on the move. Fortunately there are simple solutions to eating well whilst on the move regardless of schedule. Primarily, create a habit of preparing food in advance whilst selecting food that is easy to prepare. A salad topped with tuna or chicken and a boost of pesto takes minutes to prepare and travels well. Alternatively, a healthy vegetable based stir fry that can be refrigerated and taken to work in a cool box the following day would be suitable. ‘Super-food’ can not only potentially improve work performance but fitness goals too. Following a strict exercise routine without nutritional quality to support rest and recovery will lead to little or diminishing results. Ever missed a planned fitness session purely down to fatigue? Maybe it was your diet that was the culprit! What to eat will also depend on activity levels and exercise goals. Protein for the average population needs to be no more than 1 gram per kg of body weight per day, whilst more active individuals may need as much as 1.5-1.8 gram per kg. Good quality carbohydrates are needed to support energy levels alongside good quality fat sources.

Examples Chicken with spinach, tomato and avocado Ideal as an working lunch, spinach is a highly nutritious food high in fibre and B vitamins such as Niacin, which is good for skin, hair and eyes. Avocado is on the super food list as it is high in good mono and polyunsaturated fats that can contribute to a healthy heart. Lightly warm some spinach in pan, and stir in some chopped tomatoes and avocado plus one teaspoon of Pesto. Place the mixture on plate, sprinkle some cashew nuts and cooked, diced chicken on top - ready to serve or takeaway!
Chicken with spinach, tomato and avocado can also be made as a salad, as shown above
Sweet potato lunch Sweet potato is fantastic as it’s high in antioxidants that can help reduce the effects of damaging free radical toxins such as air pollution, sun rays and tobacco smoke. Stir fried sweet potatoes are also an excellent alternative to white potato as they provide a slow release of energy therefore helping to avoid a sudden rise in sugar levels. Add nutmeg and coconut for extra taste sensation!
Add in any veg that takes your fancy to a sweet potato lunch
Stir fry one medium sweet potato and some chopped courgettes (with the skin left on) for 10-15 minutes, then add some diced mushrooms. Once cooked, add some cooked meat of your choice and a sprinkling of vinegar to taste.
Chicken/fish with rice Great for those super active people, Brown rice combined with vegetables is once again a slow energy release food. In comparison to white rice, brown rice provides further nutritional value as it is less processed. Brown rice provides a high daily value of manganese that helps to support the bodies nervous system. Super foods for super vitality! Boil 50g of brown rice in a saucepan for 20-25 minutes or directed by brand. At the same time have some diced parsnip/broccoli and pepper prepared on side. Steam the vegetables using the heat from the cooking rice for 10-15 minutes. Upon serving add sauce to taste and mix in Why not make your chicken and brown rice in to a Thai Green Curry, as shown above? chicken or fish as desired. Twitter.com/TRENDHFL

to begin to learn the technique before adding weight. Its a challenging exercise and one that needs a little bit of neural learning before progressing further. It gets you going, gives a full body stimulus, and gets you some range early in the program. However, it’s also a great strength exercise by itself. The overhead squat can be used at any point in your program, as a range of motion exercise in the warm-up, or as a killer strength exercise in the main program.
Adding intensity The main progression is depth and weight. When you start, you may not have full range of motion. This will increase very quickly as you start to force your hips through a greater range, while weight can be increased as normal. Take the intensity up a level by adding two or three presses behind the neck at the bottom of the squat before your ascent. As it is the most challenging of all the squatting movements, start your training programme with overhead squats before progressing on to front squats and then classic squats, both of which we will cover in future issues. You should be able to do overhead squats with your own body weight with good technique before adding weights.

Technique: Overhead squat The start position
The bar is held overhead with a wide grip (otherwise known as the snatch Grip) Correct grip is achieved when the bar sits across your hips
Your abs should be switched on and braced to hold the body in a straight line
As if you were standing in the middle of a clock face, your feet should be pointing at 10 and 2
Elbows are fully extended with scapulae (shoulders) depressed & retracted Imagine you are ‘stretching’ the bar to achieve this position The bar must be maintained in a position over the crown of your head throughout
Position your feet so the heels are approximately shoulder width apart Weight should be evenly distributed at this stage across both feet

unners can perform a self-analysis of their running gait in one of two ways. Firstly, a huge amount of information can be gleaned from looking at yourself in a mirror and watching how you control some simple movements. Secondly, you can, even with today’s smart phones, arrange for someone to take enough decent video footage
of you running either on the track or a treadmill to analyse it.
The mirror approach This article will cover the simple mirror approach. Wearing shorts only and no socks, stand in front of a mirror that is long enough and positioned so that you can see at least from your tummy downwards to your feet. We will use three positions or actions to tell us various things.
Small knee bends
PICTURES BY KATIE MITCHELL
First, try small knee bends on one leg. Repeat the movement 10 to 15 times at a reasonable speed and look closely at your hips, knee and foot.
18
Look for the following: 1. The hip/pelvis should stay quite level without the hip drifting to the outside. 2. The knee should stay under the hip and not cross the mid-line of your body and certainly not drift to the inside of the foot. 3. The foot should be pointing forwards and not out to the outside. 4. The inside arch of the foot should remain upright and not roll in (pronation). 5. The toes should not claw so that the tips dig into the floor. Picture number one on the right shows an example of good alignment. Make a note of your thoughts and move on to the next movement. Facebook.com/TRENDHFL

Analysis Heel rises on one foot You should be able to lift up fully on to your tip toes of one foot without difficulty. This should be repeated 10 to 15 times, once again watching the movement control and range carefully. Look for the following: 1. The foot should be able to lift fully off the floor, not just half way (like in picture number two). 2. The arch should form at the top of the lift. 3. The knee should remain over the top of the foot and not roll in. The picture on the right shows a good foot arch but a poor range of raise

Hops on one foot Small repeated skipping type hops on the spot, on one foot. Do 10 or so and again be critical of how you move and land. Look for the following: 1. The hip/pelvis should remain near level when landing. It should not drop or collapse down. 2. The hip should not move to the outside as you land. 3. The knee should stay over the top of the foot and not roll inside of the foot. 4. The foot should stay pointing forwards and not move to point outside. 5. The foot arch should not collapse and bulge inwards on landing. 6. You should get off the ground fully and with power. 7. You should land with control and not a big thud.
3
When you land, your leg should look like that in picture one, that shows good alignment on small knee bends. Picture three on the immediate left shows common errors in how people land.

Phil Pask Former Saints physiotherapist Phil Pask tells us about his new contract as head physio with the England team, leaving Saints and why he thinks England can win the 2015 World Cup
Fact File Name: Phil Pask Occupation: Senior Physiotherapist to the England Rugby Team and physiotherapist at Witty, Pask & Buckingham, Billing Road, Northampton. Work Place: Twickenham/Northampton Career Highlights: Rugby World Cup winner, 2003
What exactly is your role with the RFU? “I’m continuing as senior physiotherapist for the England Rugby team and I’ve had that role now since 1997, and I’ve decided that I want to continue through past the next World Cup.”
How did you become head physio of England?
“My history is quite chequered. I started with the England schools in 1989 when we were all amateurs, and I was still playing for Saints at the time. “From there I went to the England A team, the England emerging team which was a team for two years, and was appointed senior team physiotherapist in 1997. “The game then became professional and became more and more demanding, and I had to give up my role as physiotherapist at the Saints in the year 2000. “We all threw our hats in to the basket to win the World Cup and we did (in 2003), which was great.”
And your still enjoying the role and looking to continue in position?
PICTURES: GETTY IMAGES 22
“I’ve now decided I want to do yet another World Cup, so this will be my fifth Rugby World Cup cycle. “It is in England, it is on the back of the Olympic Games, we have got a new coaching set-up, we’ve got fantastic players, so what is there to not want to do about the job? “I’ve re-signed, they’ve put me on a fulltime contract which allows me to spend a little bit more time on the road, visiting the Elite Performance Squad players and the Saxons players. “There are 54 elite England players dotted around the country, so I go to their clubs and help assess, treat and plan rehab with them. “And when we are in camp we have all the players that are with us on a full-time basis, so it is a pretty full on job.”
Is there ever any conflict, going in

to other clubs and working with their players?
“Everybody knows I am a Saint, I was a Saints player, a Saints coach and been on the board of directors at Saints. “But it is no surprise to anyone that I am a professional, I am never going to divulge any secrets or betray any confidences and if I had of done, I would have been caught out by now! “These guys all know me, most of them I have either played with or against or they have been my patients, so I’ve got a good relationship with the coaches at clubs and from a medical point of view, because I am experienced in what I do, my opinion is valued. “I’m not the best physio in the world, but I have got a good opinion and a basic work ethic, and they appreciate that.”
How much has your role changed across your time in the job?
“I’m a chartered physiotherapist by profession so my skills of the job itself hasn’t really changed. “What has changed is the professionalism at clubs. When I first started at Saints, you had two or three people train, everybody else went to work. Nowadays everybody trains and everybody looks after themselves more. From a physical perspective it has changed beyond recognition. You now have backs lifting 210kg, these guys are seriously strong. “The skill levels might not have changed that much to back in the 60s but in terms of the physical conditioning it is a whole different ball game.”
Do you think players have become too strong and as a result cause injury to each other more than is needed?
“They are all built in proportion so it is not as if you have got lots of big‘uns against lots of little’uns, they are conditioned to take the contact, the collisions and conditioned to take it throughout the whole game. In many ways they get less injuries now than they used to, but when

Health & Fitness - The Expert You recently left your role on the board at Saints to concentrate on England, was that a difficult decision?
“I’m desperately disappointed that I’m not going to have an active role at Saints for the next three or four years but obviously I remain a loyal Saints man and I’m hoping I’ll be able to contribute again at some stage in the future. “The good thing is now I can actually go and watch the game as a fan and really enjoy games.”
STILL GOT IT: Phil Pask joins in training while on camp with England. The former Saints physio has just signed a new contact with the RFU
they do get injured they are quite dramatic because of the size of the players. “It is a pretty safe game for people who are conditioned to play it. Put you or me in there and you’ll be in trouble. “Let’s be honest, is rugby a healthy game? Of course it’s not, you are smashing in to each other. But that is why we love it isn’t it? We love it because it is gladiatorial.”
Was the World Cup being in England in 2015 a key factor in you staying on?
“The key factors in me having the enthusiasm to carry on are we have got a great set of coaches again, and we have got some very good young players coming through and the next World Cup is in England. “So everything points to the next three years being a really great three years for English rugby and I’d like to do my bit for that.
And what is the target for the next World Cup?
“I wouldn’t be involved if the aim wasn’t to win the World Cup. “If you look at it at the minute, new Zealand are by far the best team in the world, and if the World Cup was this
24
year they would win it by a mile but there are three more years yet and it is amazing what pressure can do to teams. “I believe we can win it. I’m not just saying that because I am a passionate Englishman, if you look at the culture of some of our players I think we are going to have a better team. The team is always better than the sum of it’s parts. “We could have a back line with Manu Tuilagi, George Ford, Owen Farrell, Ben Foden and Chris Ashton – you have got a real base there, some really good players. “If you look at the forwards you have suddenly got Courtney Laws at his best, Dan Cole is a world class player, Ben Youngs from Tigers has the potential to be a world class hooker, Callum Clark from Saints, Tom Wood… you have got these young lads coming through who want to win, they are all winners, desperate for England to win, “Put them all together and suddenly you have got quite an exciting team.” I think we can win it and that is why I am excited and that’s why I’m still there.
Facebook.com/TRENDHFL
You’ll still be involved with the Saints England lads though won’t you – it looks like there is some work to be done with (injured) Ben Foden?
“It is a big old rehab that one. It has ruined his season really. “The thing is with the injury like Ben’s, although it is a catastrophe for him it is actually an opportunity to get a lot of the other things sorted out, so any of the other things he has got he can get sorted and actually he should come back a better athlete than before the injury. “That is something we do with all our long-term injuries these days, although it is devastating at the time and horrendous for the players, as soon as you have got over that it is a massive opportunity to work on all the stuff that you don’t normally get the chance to work on because you haven’t got the time. “Ben will come back in better shape than prior to the injury, and that improves him which is what keeps the players motivated when they are injured. “That is the crux of my job, to be in there and provide the motivation to get someone like Ben Foden back in to full play, and I think that is one of the reasons I have been around for such a long time, if I’m good at anything that is the thing that I am good at.”

Northampton Saints rugby players given a lesson on how to tantalise their taste buds at Northampton College

THE difference between a good athlete and great athlete is often made up of the small percentages, the extent to which they are prepared to look at the small details that can make a big impact. At Franklin’s Gardens, home of Northampton Saints, they recognise the impact a positive lifestyle away from the club can have on
performance, so they sent some of their senior pros and emerging stars along to Northampton College for a cooking master class with leading chef lecturer Richard Curtis. TRENDHFL spoke exclusively to Richard and some of the key Saints players to see how it all went...

utrition is important for the recovery side of things as well as the playing side,” explains expert chef Richard Curtis, NVQ Level 3 Catering Lecturer at Northampton College. “It is packing in the proteins and knowing what to take in and when to take it in. “If you can do some nice, simple dishes and make them interesting and lively then the players are going to eat better rather than go across the road to the local chip shop.” Presumably it was with that in mind that the Saints sent players including Stephen Myler and Christian Day to learn how to cultivate their culinary skills. “Most of my colleagues know what they should and should not eat but unfortunately, not many can actually cook,” laughed Day. “So hopefully what they have learnt will help them.” The 29 year-old Saints Lock actually proved to be the dark horse amongst the Saints players, earning the praise of the lecturer. “Christian Day is a fantastic cook,” said Curtis. “He is a really good cook, very foody. A lot of rugby players are foody and a lot are interested in food because nutrition is important for them. “A lot of the guys who came down were very good, very interested and very keen. Stephen Myler was very keen – they are all keen lads.” Myler admits that he has a way to go before he can challenge Gordon Ramsay but he’s slightly closer having completed the course. “I am a little bit of a novice in the cooking region but I’ve learnt a few things on this course and hopefully I will be able to carry on in the future,” said the fly-half. “It’s always fun to learn new skills and this course was very enjoyable.” So what exactly did the boys get up to? “We did quite a few dishes,” explained Curtis. “We had six sessions with them of a couple of hours at a time but we often ran over because we

were enjoying ourselves so much. “We did some curry, good old Tikka Masala and showed them how to cook some rice, braise some rice and make the accompaniments that went with it. “Then we did fish, filleting trouts, pan-frying trouts, grilling trout. Then we did a pasta day when we stuffed it with a pumpkin stuffing and made a couple of sauces. “Not all of the players had base levels of being able to cook. We taught them things that they wouldn’t necessarily do themselves, like making fresh pasta. “Some of the younger players came up and they get a pack of meats as part of their pay, and in that pack of meats is some minced turkey, because it is low in fat. “So we did things with that like showing them how to make burgers and tried to extend the range of things that they can do with the meat. Also some of them weren’t very knowledgeable about fish, so we showed them how to fillet fish, how to cook fish and look after fish. Just the general stuff that perhaps you don’t really get from magazines and books.” Think you can match the Saints new found skills in the kitchen? Leading the way Pioneering Northamptonshire bike racer Maria Costello MBE talks us through her incredible career so far, and tells us how she’s far from finished... Words: Steve Walsh Picture: Richard Dawson

I
T’S hard to believe that the career of one of Britain’s most successful female bikers started with a pile of broken bones after a crash on the way to work in her late teens. But then pioneering Maria Costello, MBE, never was one to play by the rules. The Earls Barton rider has smashed through every perceived glass ceiling on her way to record after record, and laughed in the face of people who said it couldn’t be done. Costello was the first female rider in history to make the podium at the Manx Grand Prix in 2005, and held the Guinness World Record for the fastest lap by a woman around the Isle of Man TT circuit. Now 39 years-old and as popular as ever on the racing circuit, Costello has helped inspire a generation of new riders. But as she tells us, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. “I failed my driving test twice,” laughs Costello as we look back on how she started out in racing. “A friend of the family’s son had a motorbike, and I quite fancied their son, and he took me round the bike shops and I got a Yamaha TZR125. “I fell in love with motorbikes. I had my TZR and I was training as a veterinary nurse in Northampton,
‘I fell in love with motorbikes’ Maria Costello still living in Spratton, and on my way to work one day I got knocked off by a car driver and broke a few bones.” Where others would have been put off, Costello was inspired: “I got a compensation cheque and that paid for my first racing bike,” she explains. “I just loved going fast on motorbikes. I started working in a bike shop and obviously made lots of new friends in bike shops

RIDING IN STYLE: Maria Costello takes a corner at Walderstown, Ireland earlier this year on board a Honda NSF250, while below, she celebrates her historic third place at the Manx GP in 2005. Pictures: Thermaine Gregg/Isle of Man Today and a couple of us were going to join forces, because racing is very expensive. “But then they opted out and I went racing on my own. They introduced me to a friend called Dave Weston, who was racing at the time, and he helped me get started. And that was that.” Talk to Costello for any length of time and you start to get a sense of the ambition that burns brightly beneath the leathers and helmet that protect her around the track. The one thing
that sticks out from our conversation is the amount of hurdles that could have stood in her way, but instead she smashed through them like they weren’t even there. “Was it difficult? No because it was just something that I wanted to do,” says Costello. “So I just set out to do it, and did it. It is as simple as that, if you want to do something, I think you find a way to do it. I don’t think it was any more difficult for me than it was for a guy. “ Did she come up against any prejudice, being a woman in a male dominated sport? “Nothing bad enough to put me off,” she says. “I suppose that just challenged me,
around the TT track (in 2004), I got a Guinness World Record for that, then the year after that I was the first woman to finish on the podium at the Manx Grand Prix.” Costello’s voice picks up as I ask her if that podium finish in 2005 ranks as her career defining performance: “Absolutely, absolutely,” she beams. “I remember it like it was yesterday, I felt like I was on top of the world. It was a big, big moment for me and it was a really enjoyable race. It was fabulous.” The recognition of her world record pace, a staggering

OUT IN FRONT: Gordon Whittaker’s picture captures the sheer beauty of the Manx GP earlier this year in this picture featuring Maria I thought ‘right, I’ll show them’ type thing. “That was a long time ago now, and the attitude then was different than it is now.” It helped that she had talent by the bucket load, which brought her to the attention of Peter and Sandra Barnet, a meeting that would lead Costello to her career defining moments on the Isle of Man. “I won a race in my first year and I got approached by Peter and Sandra Barnet, and Sandra was the fastest woman to lap the TT course at the time,” adds Maria. “They wanted to put together an all girl team, and myself and
Bridget McManus and Sandra Barnet formed that team. Sandra did the TT and we would do the Manx Grand Prix, as well as doing short circuit racing. “My mum wasn’t too keen about that, she walked out at the launch party when that was announced, because that was the first thing she said to me when I said I was going to go racing, ‘you’re not going to go to Isle of Man-pace’. “And I hadn’t really thought about it, it was only when I got this ride with this team. That took me to the Isle of Man for the first time, and the rest is history really. I did fall in love with the place. “I became the fastest woman
average speed of 114.73 mph around the Isle of Man TT circuit, set the year before her podium finish is just another example of how Costello led the way for women in motorcycling, as she explains: “It didn’t just happen, I contacted the Guinness World Records. I was very keen to put that in place, it has put an extra accolade in there for women riders. “There was nobody there doing that kind of stuff, I was the one sorting this out. I had to make this PR noise because without my sponsors, I wouldn’t be able to go racing, so I needed to make noise for them.” An on-top-of-the-world Costello soon came crashing down to earth, quite literally, however, when she followed up her most successful two years in racing with a crash that threatened to take her away from competitive action forever. “The following year I went with a prototype bike, a fuelinjected 400cc, and I guess it probably needed a bit more development,” says Costello Twitter.com/TRENDHFL

in hindsight. “Tim Bradley, who owned the bike I finished on the podium on the year before, contacted me and sent a new bike over but the only problem was the weather was against us, it was the last practice session and I had to go out in damp conditions. “I’m not sure whether that
‘I said I’ve had enough, I can’t do this anymore’ Maria Costello is what caused the accident, because someone else had actually come off on that corner just moments before me, so whether there was something else on the track, we will never know. “But I ended up on a bank with a badly broken leg and shoulder, and I got airlifted to hospital and ended up with a long recovery period.” Costello wouldn’t race again that year and barely walked for six months, such was the condition of her injuries. Her confidence shattered, she came close to quitting racing. “When you are hurting, you do think ‘god, do I really want to go through this again?’,” admits Costello. “But as the pain went I was desperate to get back on my bike. “The next few years were just hard work. I had to force myself to ride really, I wasn’t enjoying it like I used to, but I’m glad I stuck at it because I’m back enjoying it now more then ever before. I just had to push through that period. “The year after, I was at the Manx Grand Prix but I wasn’t really enjoying it, and I kind of forced myself to race. “I came in for my pitstop and I was ready to get off the bike, and my mechanic, Mark Buckley, knew I was going to try and do that and he stood

DON’T LOOK DOWN: Amazingly, Maria Costello walked away from this crash at Snetterton earlier this year with no major injuries, while below she rides the Twin Classic Susuki XR69. Pictures: Brian Lancaster/Gordon Whittaker next to me pushing me back on the bike, elbowing me back on. “I was saying, ‘I’ve had enough, I can’t do this’, and he said ‘just do one more lap’. “The scrutineer came over, and asked if everything was alright. We both said yes and I set-off and finished the race. “It did get rid of a few demons and I had a better race later on in the week.” Now coming towards a new
phase of her career, Costello shows no signs of slowing down, a fact she confirms with her ambition to continue racing. “I want to carry on forever,” she adds. “It is a sort of year to year thing and as the year goes on you meet more people and other events are uncovered. “I’ve been to America the past two years. I’m not going this year but it is looking like I’ll do four meetings there next year. “I want to go back to the TT, so I’m looking for backers for that. I’ve got my supertwin and I want to race in Ireland with that, there is talk of all sorts of things. It is about sorting all those things out over the winter time and seeing where we are.” I ask Costello about her position as a pioneer in her sport, and through a humble haze of embarrassment at the question, she reveals her plans to help inspire

Bike racing leading the way in gender battle MARIA COSTELLO admits she has been fortunate to have been given the chance to compete wheel to wheel with her male counterparts. Female competitors have met stern resistance to competing on a level playing field with men in other sports such as golf, but Costello believes motorcycling is ahead of the game when it comes to equal opportunities for both genders. “It is fantastic that we get to compete on equal terms, that is the one thing that I think it really special about the sport,” says Costello. “I think that is a good way of putting it, to say we are advanced. “Maybe with some sports, they can’t make it mixed gender, that is really not possible. “But I think with others, they could. “Through Women in Sport, who I worked with years ago, I met lots of women football players, and rowers, and a lot of them say ‘wow! You get to compete against the guys on equal terms, that is what we dream of doing’. “I think it is something that any woman would want to do.”

ROYAL APPROVAL: Prince Charles awards Maria Costello her MBE in 2009, awarded for services to motorcycling. more women to jump on a motorbike. “Other people have said that is what I am, so I guess that is what I am,” says Costello, referring to her pioneering status. “I am trying to do more now for women in motorcycling, not just in racing. I started up a group on Facebook and I’m looking to make big things happen next year. “I want to do some female track days, I want to do some confidence building days. “There is a lot of women out there, that I have realized through having this group, chatting about the fact they have got this fantastic motorbike but they are actually a little bit afraid of it, and they probably need some coaching and they just need to build up their skill set really to enjoy their motorcycling more. “I’m kind of concentrating on the female side of things because
I am female, but it won’t be that I rule out doing stuff with guys.” And with that Costello puts across her own counter-argument to her image of that of a heroine. “A lot of what I have done is because I want to go racing,” she says. “Selfishly I love the sport, I love motorcycle racing, and I wanted to do that, so I needed to do these things to keep it going. “I definitely fell in love with the sport and thought this is what I want to do. I didn’t really see it as a career, I just saw it as something I wanted to do. That’s been part of my problem really, I just love racing motorbikes. “It is all consuming, but I love it, and the reason why I’m doing it is I get to do something I adore.” Keep up to date with Maria’s latest adventures at her website, www.costelloracing.com, where you can also buy her autobiography, ‘Queen of Bikers’.

New age chic
Be the best you can be as the classic military look takes on a new spin for autumn/winter 2012 In its various incarnations, for the past decade or so it seems that Military has been the eternal Autumn/Winter trend, both on the catwalks and on the street. Luckily for devotees who love the functionality of military style, but still want their look to have a new-season edge, it has now finally been given a new spin for Autumn/Winter 2012. This season it’s all about the khaki army surplus vibe and adding a hard, masculine edge with leather details and caps. The New Army Chic also ties in with the embellishment trend: Army-style accessories with jewelled embellishments are perfect for softening the look. For wearability, looking for ways to tone down the full-on army vibe is key: Heavy lace-up boots, a khaki army surplus-style jacket and a cap are all great pieces on their own, but never all at once. The aim is to look slightly tough
and very chic, not to channel a Soviet-era sergeant major (or a certain ex-WAG popstar). The easiest way to get the look on the high street is with a khaki army jacket, which will act as an instant wardrobe updater; Primark and Internaçionale’s versions are both worth checking out. If it’s tough lace-up boots you’re after, head to Bertie or River Island. River Island also has a great selection of embellished military-style caps, as do Marks & Spencer and Accessorize. The beauty of this trend is that it can be worked in so many different ways, and dressed up or down for day, office or evening wear. You can’t go wrong if you look to the catwalks for inspiration on how to style the trend. Victoria Beckham’s runway was a masterclass in rocking the army vibe with tough accessories (wrap-around leather belts, long boots and caps), but keeping the silhouette ultra-feminine with fitted midi dresses. It’s all about being as eclectic as you like and incorporating the look into your own!

Life & Style - Beauty
Get maximum style with minimal fuss Our expert hair columnist and leading stylist Dominic Lehane looks at some of the key hair trends suitable for today’s active woman A busy and hectic lifestyle may not allow you to give prominence to yourself, but that shouldn’t stop you from looking your best. A quick to-do, practical, easy to manage yet stylish and chic hairstyle is what you need.
For the modern, busy woman a hairstyle is often more about convenience than it is about style, but that doesn’t have to be the way. I’ve selected five of the best on-trend, wearable and low maintenance hairstyles to try this season.
If you’re interested in knowing more on how to achieve any of the featured styles or have a question about any other styling requests, call Lehane Salons on 01604 589239 or visit www.dominiclehane.co.uk.
Five of the best simple, on-trend hair styles for this season The bun The versatility of the bun ensures it’s a constant catwalk favourite, with the entire style changed by its position, texture and finish. From a street-inspired tough and textured top knot to an enduring, elegant smooth ballerina bun, this look is ideal for showing off shoulders and décolletage. Tousled wavy bob This season the disciplined finger waves are given a modern update - now with more texture, more tousle and a whole lot of added sexiness. On a medium bob haircut, simply add some curl amplify to dampen hair and caress into light, undone waves and allow to dry naturally. The pixie cut The pixie crop remains a popular, stylish cut for winter 2012/13. Ideal for those with small features and requiring almost no styling time, this is a cut that is open to those with either thin or thick hair. Be sure that you have the confidence to wear this beautiful short haircut and make sure you search out a great stylist to create the look.

Wet-look Perfectly slick or textured, flowing free or tied up high, this is a style you can go outside with. A vast number of styles across the runways had one thing in common: they all had a wet-look finish. It’s all about looking like you’ve just thrown the hairdryer aside and let your busy lifestyle draw you from the beach, pool or gym without pausing to give your locks more than a nonchalant towel-dry. The ponytail The ponytail has well and truly earned its place as a catwalk classic. Season after season it reappears on the runways with countless finishes, textures and positions enabling it to be reinvented for any collection or mood. Grungy or girly, preppy or powerful, it’s a look that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Life & Style - Staying In
Pop contest THE artists of these three new releases span 15 years of pop culture, so theoretically there should be something for everyone. Unless you’re not exactly the pop kind, that is. A few years back this would have been an intriguing battle between new kids on the block One Direction and ‘I’ve sold so many records I don’t really need to try anymore’ Robbie Williams. Williams did stop trying, however, and One Direction, or 1D as they’re known, are cleaning up in the wake of a boy band void. Ellie Goulding links the two in that she was the next big thing between the disappearance of Robbie and the arrival of brand 1D. Failing to live up to expectations, Goulding has never quite hit the heights that her billing suggested she would, but if latest single Anything Could Happen is anything to go by, maybe now is her time. You can get Ellie’s latest effort, Halcyon, now, while Robbie and 1D arrive with new albums on 5th and 12th of November respectively.
