About the cover: This untitled image by Bill Phelps was shot on location at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1998, using 8x10 Polaroid film and a Deardorff rosewood field camera. Featuring a 1939 Velocette KSS motorcycle from Phelps’s own collection, the inspiration for the shot was, “Mythology, cinema, and a little bit of Fellini.”

f taste is innate, it’s certainly an instinct possessed by Janine Lehmann, art director and graphic designer of Trend for over 15 years. With a contemporizing aesthetic and innovative design vision that have shaped the magazine’s personality through time, it’s Lehmann who makes the words dance. And it’s through her choreography that even as trees fell in the forest of print, Trend grew taller. A New Yorker with a background in fine arts, Lehmann studied film and black and white photography (under the tutelage of Roy DeCarava) at Hunter College, and advertising design at Fashion Institute of Technology. She worked at interior design and architectural firms and designed a quarterly publication with the Natural Resources Defense Council before answering a call to move to Santa Fe in 1994. Here she applied her distinct and evolving aesthetic as a book designer for John Muir Publications until she went on to

start her own graphic design firm in 2000. She then met Cynthia Canyon, publisher of a brand new magazine and a dedicated visionary herself. Along with their editors and through the long days and never-ending nights, the two have conducted work that is more typically completed by staffs of dozens. Yet in the midst of press deadlines, there is always a moment of spontaneous, uncontrollable laughter between them, as if some hilarity were necessary in the quest for perfection— which is what Lehmann is after. Whether designing the look of a feature story, working with photographers to create an extraordinary image, drafting multiple options for the magazine’s cover, or obsessively kerning (adjusting spacing between font characters) to achieve that just noticeable difference to the hawkeyed, Lehmann makes you want to hold a magazine in your hands, where it belongs, and to appreciate it for what it is: a fine art.

oan Severance has been captivating audiences since she jetted off to Paris immediately after high school at the age of 18. Soon afterward, she landed on runways, magazine covers, and editorial pages for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as in print and television advertisements for some of the most prestigious names in fashion, including Gucci, Armani, Chanel, Revlon, and L’Oreal—and she was photographed by all the greats. Her modeling days launched her into an active acting career, which continues today with the upcoming shooting of three back-to-back films in early 2016. elp4vitiligo.org is an organization that raises awareness of a condition called vitiligo, whose symptoms appear as white patches of skin. Michael Jackson is the most noted person of our time to exhibit the symptoms, although millions of people live with the condition every day. I am one of them, having experienced vitiligo since childhood. There is no cure. Along with the book that I am writing about my story, my loves and losses, my successes and failures as I dealt with my hidden secret, I also created help4vitiligo. It came about after a trip to the Dead Sea, where I met some of the most beautiful people in the world, all with the same condition. They looked to me to be their voice, someone whose position in the public eye would bring a level of awareness that might even lead to a cure, or at least to renewed hope and assistance. It’s still early in my endeavors, but I have sparked the interest of a company considering a pilot study of their product and oxidative stress in those with vitiligo. Michael Filonow

Born and raised in Rhode Island, Michael Filonow set out at an early age to see as much of the world as possible. After graduating from Syracuse University in upstate New York with a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to become a pilot. After serving, he modeled his way through Europe and Asia. While working with—and observing— some of the finest fashion photographers of the day, Filonow discovered that he, too, had a calling to capture moments of beauty on film. He honed his skills on his days off, photographing other models and the landscapes, cities, and people he encountered while on location. Within a short time, he quit modeling to devote himself fulltime to photography, working as a lifestyle and fashion photographer from his home base in Europe. Eventually Filonow made his way back to the States and since 2001 has lived and worked in New York City, where he resides with his wife and two children. Whether shooting for Architectural Digest, Neiman Marcus, or American Airlines, Filonow treats each assignment as an opportunity to orchestrate the elements of form, space, color, and light into a composition that captivates the eye. “A classically beautiful picture never goes out of style,” he says, and his work exemplifies that ethos. trendmagazineglobal.com

In the 1980s, Hamid Bechiri stood alongside Way Bandy as the go-to high-fashion makeup artist for some of the era’s top magazines and advertising campaigns, working his artistry on such modeling greats as Christie Brinkley, Jerry Hall, Lauren Hutton, Cheryl Tiegs, and Kim Alexis. He eventually took up photography as a natural outgrowth of his lifelong dedication to the fashion aesthetic. His work has since appeared on the covers of numerous Vogue issues and in magazines such as L’Uomo Vogue, It, Vanity Fair, Elle, Interview, Allure, Marie Claire, Glamour, and Harper’s Bazaar. His wide range of corporate clients includes Gucci, Sony, L’Oreal, Rolex, and YSL. Combining the sophistication of a lifelong world traveler with the curiosity of an astute observer of life’s subtleties and dramas, Bechiri’s work is elegant, sensual, and strongly evocative.

Whether embarking on another leg of his globetrotting odyssey to surf the world’s best waves, working as a stuntman, or training his lens on subjects for top magazines, fashion photographer Winston Kletter excels at conjuring the energy and excitement of the world around him. The son of a fashionable Hungarian mother and a father from the Lower East Side of Manhattan who went on to own the largest trucking company on the East Coast, Kletter has always moved easily between the worlds of high glamour and down-to-earth adventure. He cites both Coco Chanel and Jimi Hendrix as style icons, is as likely to drive a $700 VW bus as a sleek Maserati, and considers the ultimate luxury “the freedom to consciously choose the fundamental structure of your days, destinations, and physical and cerebral experiences.” His career both in front of and behind the lens was launched when, as a champion springboard diver, photographer Bruce Weber tapped him for inclusion as a model in a series focusing on Olympic hopefuls. Weber’s image helped launch the teenage Kletter on a successful modeling career, eventually prompting him to pick up his own camera for clients ranging from MTV to fashion magazines like Elle and Marie Claire. When not immersed in photography, the Capetown, South Africa, resident pursues his passions for music and guitar-playing, Western and Eastern philosophy, film, classic literature, and surfing the world’s best waves.

Steven White Edgy, humorous, and provocative, the work of Steven White elevates the conventions of fashion and lifestyle photography into the realm of fine art. White began his photography career in Milan, Italy, where he worked for fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and L’Uomo Vogue and shot campaigns for Kritzia, Breitling, Swatch, La Perla, and Triumph. After two years in Europe, he moved to New York City, where he landed assignments with Harper’s Bazaar, several European editions of Vogue, Coach Leather, Bergdorf Goodman, Armani, and Aquascutum. After five years White shifted his focus to travel photography and personal work. His assignments for Conde Nast Traveler sent him around the world, and his photographs taken in Peru, India, Thailand, Cuba, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Central and South America have formed the basis for a body of work currently being edited for book publication. Most recently, White’s work has appeared in Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Fitness, Self, FHM, Maxim, Conde Nast Traveler, and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Some of his recent campaigns include Guess, Puma, Budweiser, Michelob, Buckle, Lei, Captain Morgan Rum, and Club Med. As a sought-after celebrity portraitist, he has worked with Shakira, Britney Spears, Venus Williams, Sienna Miller, Mariah Carey, TLC, and Megan Fox.

Andrew Macpherson Andrew Macpherson was born in London, where his mother owned a couture dress shop and his father raced cars. Growing up surrounded by fashion and racing magazines, he fell in love with photography as a way to capture the glamour and excitement of his parents’ world. By age 13 he was taking pictures, then left school at 15 to start an apprenticeship in a photo production house on Fleet Street, the old heart of London’s newspaper industry. It was a grim, Dickensian place, staffed by miserable old men, but it gained him invaluable experience and led to work with such exceptional photographers as Lord Snowdon, Horst, Fabrizio Gianni, Bob Carlos-Clarke, and Ed White. At 22, Macpherson published his first fashion story, in Harpers & Queen, and over the next 18 months he shot for all the top London magazines, including i-D, The Face, and The Sunday Times. Soon he started receiving Vogue commissions, first for the London edition, then Paris, and, finally, for Italian Vogue, the ultimate commission for any young photographer. Offers to shoot campaigns for Diesel Jeans, Levi’s, Dunhill, Kookaï, and Ray-Ban poured in, and it was through these assignments that Macpherson fell in love with California. He worked as a fashion photographer for several more years, splitting his time among London, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles, but gradually refocused his energies on the entertainment industry. Permanently based in LA since 1994, Macpherson continues to push the envelope of his art, with shots for movie posters, album and CD covers, magazine editorials, and his own personal art projects.

Kevin Thomas

Born in Oakland, California, during the height of the Bay Area’s civil rights movement, Kevin Thomas was introduced to photography at a young age by his grandmother. Her home on MacArthur Boulevard at 94th Avenue gave her a front-stoop view of those turbulent times, and she often turned her lens to the events unfolding around her. She later encouraged her grandson to pick up his own camera, eventually teaching him how to develop his film in her small darkroom. “Seeing the images come to life was magical,” Thomas says. “I was hooked.” During high school he devoted his extracurricular time to track and photography, and was mentored in both endeavors by coach and sports photographer Don Chadez, who is renowned for his images of the 1976 Olympic Games. A ten-year career as a model post-high school gave Thomas the opportunity to work with some of the best photographers of the era, and it solidified his passion for working fulltime behind the lens. To date, his images have graced the pages of FSHN, Playboy, Tatler, Town & Country, Remark, Ouch, and Viva, to name just a few.

Gerald Dearing’s

approach to photography is simple and direct. Working spontaneously and without artifice, he seeks to capture the authenticity of the moment—no tricks, no manipulation, the technique of no technique. The results reflect such directness. They are intimate, honest, and pure. Within his images lies a sharp sense of transience, a soul both deeply contemplative and melancholic. Born and raised in coastal Normandy, France, in the 1940s, his body of work spans more than 30 years. Dearing discovered the Polaroid Land Camera 180 early in his career, and went on to work in fashion and film with many iconic artists and friends, such as Alex Chatelain, Guy Bourdin, Arthur Elgort, Mike Reinhardt, Uli Rose, Gilles Bensimon, Rudy Wurlitzer, Robert Frank, and his brother, Patrick Demarchelier. The Polaroids are the embodiment of Dearing’s aesthetic, images that are immediate and that make no attempt to conceal the markings and scratches of time.

Victoria Dearing

is the daughter of Gerald Dearing, who is her best

friend and greatest inspiration. Incapable of producing clichéd work, Victoria refuses to take the photograph that so many already have and will do again, seeing everything anew instead. She creates compositions of great tonal and aesthetic intrigue while never reducing her subject matter to mere geometries. She connects directly to their essential humanity, offering a genuine curiosity and, yes, friendliness, toward the world and all its inhabitants. Dearing has photography built into her DNA and has been taking pictures all her life, negotiating that path between commercial imagery and personal vision, where that art has currently found itself at its most fruitful. At a time when everyone travels and takes photographs, it has become easier rather than harder to distinguish between the true photographic eye and the tourist’s snapshot. n the early 1970s, Jean Pagliuso stood at the forefront of a wave of female high-fashion photographers that included Sarah Moon, Deborah Turbeville, and Rebecca Blake. Together, they helped changed the landscape of the primarily male-dominated field. Born and raised in California, Pagliuso graduated from the College of Fine Arts at UCLA (now the School of the Arts and Architecture) in 1963, and six years later began her photographic career. For the next 30 years her photos of fashion and film stars were published in nearly every major magazine. Pagliuso left the fashion business at the height of her career to turn her attention to fine art photography. Her most recent series, The Poultry Suite, began as an homage to her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love of breeding show Bantam Cochins. Made using a Thai mulberry paper and silver gelatin emulsion technique, the portraits exhibit an exceptional elegance and dignity. f one had to come up with a single word to describe the work of photographer Bill Phelps, it would have to be kinetic: waves crash, hands gesture through scrims of smoke, garments swirl, and animals bound and rear. Automobiles, motorcycles, and boats—and the people who love, build, and race them—figure prominently as themes. Even his portrait subjects vibrate with energy, as if the camera caught them not in a moment of stillness but in a split second of time between movement, expression, and speech. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Phelps has built an impressive career despite having no formal art training, lending his talents to Italian Vogue, French Marie Claire, Conde Nast Traveller UK, The New York Times Magazine, Fortune, and Interview, and picking up both an IPA Lucie Award and the Grand Prize of Portraits for the World Press. Phelps is also the co-designer, builder, and owner of Cafe Moto in his home base of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Those who remember the heady nightlife of New York City during the early 1980s will find that Bobby Miller’s early work resonates like the clink of champagne glasses at Studio 54, the famed nightclub whose goings-on he documented for nearly three years. An actor, poet, and photographer since 1973, Miller studied with Lisette Model at The New School of Social Research in New York City, and learned additional tricks of the trade while working as a hairdresser and makeup artist for Robert Mapplethorpe and iconic rock photographer Lynn Goldsmith. Miller realized he was on to something with his work when, during a meeting to show Andy Warhol his portfolio, the artist asked his assistant to figure out how to make silk screens from the photos. Needless to say, Miller picked up his portfolio and ran for the door. But he didn’t stop shooting. To date, his photo books include A Downtown State of Mind: NYC; Wigstock in Black and White; Portraits Vols 1-3; Jackie 60 Nights; Queer Nation; Forget Them Not; and Troubleblonde. Fabulous! A Photographic Diary of Studio 54, which Miller first published in 1998 with St. Martin’s Press, was rereleased in 2012, with 36 new color images to celebrate the upcoming 36th anniversary of Studio 54. Miller’s most recent book is the fourth volume in his series Ptown Peeps, which chronicles the residents and seasonal visitors to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he currently resides and works. 199

A Boulder, Colorado, native, Justin Segall (bottom row, second from left) spent his childhood surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty. He discovered photography at four years old when he became fascinated by the stereoscopic slideshow world of the View-Master. At 16 years old, he became the assistant to Vogue photographer Tony Kent. A year later, he journeyed to Cuba to explore his heritage through a series of photographs that would later open to great acclaim at a gallery back in his hometown. Today Segall is a highly sought-after prop stylist for fashion and corporate clients around the world. As longtime Burning Man participants, he and his wife and friends document their experiences in a series of photographs that showcase the method and the madness of this annual communal gathering in the Nevada desert. “Burning Man became a creative and personal outlet to reset, find inspiration, and get connected with a tribe of like-minded artists and creators,” Segall says. “The photos are simply quick snaps of a moment rather than composition. In other words, I didn’t really go there to take pictures.”

Bill Curry Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, “One has to feel oneself involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. It is putting one’s head, one’s eye, and one’s heart on the same axis.” Bill Curry embraces this philosophy every time he picks up his camera. Curry began carrying a Canon AE-1 on his first trip to Europe, when he was hired to be the face of the Nino Cerruti campaign. As one of the most photographed models in the world for nearly two decades, he was featured on the editorial pages and covers of GQ, British Vogue, Men’s Journal, and L’Uomo Vogue. Along with that experience, he gathered lessons in lighting, composition, and production while working with such masters as Richard Avedon, Arthur Elgort, Bruce Weber, Francesco Scavullo, Steven Meisel, Jean Pagliuso, and Patrick Demarchelier. A professional photographer for the past 15 years, his clients include Six Senses Resorts and Spas, Private Air Magazine, Platinum Equity and The Chelko Foundation. He delights in turning his lens to the magical light of northern New Mexico, where he resides.

In the coming year, the restaurant will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Santa Fe with a spectacular celebration planned for guests both local and from all over the world. In keeping with this intention, Kiffin has fashioned a menu that pays homage to classic Continental cooking while fusing fresh ingredients and flawless technique, yielding an updated take on contemporary American cuisine that has garnered some of the culinary world’s highest awards.

Expect favorites to be prepared with innovative flourishes, like roasted rack of lamb with chickpeas, heirloom carrots, and grilled ramps accompanied by salsa verde and romesco sauce; or a pan-roasted chicken breast stuffed with house-made chorizo, roasted sweet pepper, and cilantro alongside a fingerling potato stew. The wine list pairs especially well with the food, so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss the opportunity to sample a new vintage. Desserts are inventive, ranging from decadent to refreshing, or both, such as ruby grapefruit granita with grapefruit-basil salad and poppy-seed cake, frozen passion fruit, and white chocolate mousse in a blueberry-ginger port glaze. Outside the elegant dining room is a flower-filled patio as well as a smaller garden patio for private parties. All private dining rooms can be reserved for groups of 10 to 200 people, with special tasting menus available.
