EVERY COLLEGE STUDENT SHOULD READ
By Claire Murrell
College can be a stressful and scary place, as I am coming to find out in my first month of being here. The world after college can be even scarier–developing your own independent life, establishing a career and maintaining healthy personal relationships. A common way to relieve stress can be to read a book, and some can even give you advice to take with you into your life beyond your college years. Here are ten books that students here on Iowa State’s campus as well as librarian, Sherri Bolen, think should be read by every college student–whether it be to relieve stress or prepare you for your life to come.
1.
I Am Malala - Malala Yousafzai Malala Yousafzai tells an inspiring story about her life pursuit of getting an education, and advocates for girls everywhere to be able to get an education as well. After publicly speaking out and being an activist for women’s education in Pakistan, Malala was targeted by the Taliban, the radical Islamic militia, and shot in the head. Despite this, Malala continues to fight for her right to an education and tell her story of survival. Her story is motivational and tells of the importance of speaking out for what you believe in, although she was told to keep silent.

2.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change Stephen R. Covey This book may be the most directly applicable to college students’ lives, especially for life post-college. Covey’s seven habits are as follows: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood and Synergize and Sharpen the Saw. Covey goes into detail about what each of these habits consist of and how they help you to become successful.

This novel is a true to life story about two women living in Afghanistan, written from their own perspective. Elizabeth Garzon, a junior at Iowa State, explains why this book is an important read. “The story is written from the perspective that so many Americans never get to hear [or know about]: the female Afghan perspective,” She says. “It’s a beautiful story about two women who have incredibly rough lives that were ruined by the Taliban, but also the abusive men in their lives. And although the society in which they live in does not care about them at all, they find strength in each other and rise from the ashes of a terribly ‘religious’ patriarchy.”
Often on lists like these, people will find the book “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, however, because this is so common, I decided to include a book that I loved just as much and has very similar themes throughout. “Love Letters to the Dead” is a young adult novel written from the perspective of 15 year old girl, Laurel. Laurel begins writing letters to dead famous people as an assignment, and continues to help her grieve her sister’s death. This novel explores important themes that can help college students throughout life, such as love, loss, abuse and forgiveness.
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini
Love Letters to the Dead Ava Dellaira
4.
Eat, Pray, Love Elizabeth Gilbert This memoir was written by Elizabeth Gilbert, highlighting her world travels following her divorce. It is a book that college students should read because bad things are going to happen in life. This book highlights the ways in which you can find yourself again and find your best self. Goodreads says that Gilbert explores three aspects of her nature in different cultures: “pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.” 3
6.
The Help - Kathryn Stockett Written from the perspective of three seemingly very different women, The Help shows the extraordinary determination and voices women can have in society. Dealing with issues of sexism and racism in the 1960s, The Help tells the story of Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson and Skeeter Phelan. After graduating college, Skeeter’s family wants her to settle down and get married, however she has bigger plans for her future. After seeing how her family’s black maids are treated compared to other white workers, Skeeter wants to write a story about their lives and oppression black people and women face. “I think it’s a novel that really exemplifies the history of racism and helped me personally understand it better, which is something every college student should want to do,” says Bryce Jones, sophomore at Iowa State. “It was really moving and eye opening. I thought about it a lot for weeks after I read it.”
7.
Missoula - Jon Krakauer After hundreds of cases of sexual assault were filed and mishandled in the college town of Missoula, Montana, journalist Jon Krakauer investigates the experiences of five different victims, trying to reveal what an experience like this is truly like. Krakauer also shows how the case of Missoula is very similar to other places and college towns in general. Focusing on issues such as victim’s fear and shame in the aftermath as well as mistreatment of the victim by authorities, such as victim blaming, Krakauer’s book is very informative and thought provoking, especially today when sexual assault and victim mistreatment is so prevalent. 4
8.
The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls Walls’ memoir follows her dysfunctional family life growing up. With an absent mother and an alcoholic father, the children had to learn on their own how to take care of one another and intensely love each other despite their bad situation. This book gives the message of how important it is to support your family members, and the resilience and redemption one can have even after facing dysfunction.
9.
A Long Way Home: A Memoir - Saroo Brierly This book, inspiring the major motion picture Lion, is a memoir about the life of Saroo Brierly. After getting lost on a train in India at five years old, Saroo was separated from his family, not even knowing his hometown or last name. After living on his own in the streets for weeks, he was found and adopted by a family in Australia. This is an inspiring story of the motivation he had to spend years searching through Google Map images of India, looking for anything familiar that would direct him back home.
10.
The Things That Keep Us Here - Carla Buckley This fictional novel forces the reader to think about the most difficult of questions: in the face of the crisis, how far would you go to protect the ones you love? After a new pandemic spreads that is expected to kill fifty percent of the people who encounter it, Ann Brooks is trapped inside her home with her daughters, her ex husband and his graduate assistant. Ann is forced to make life or death decisions in this terrifying and intriguing novel. “I found this book to be very interesting because in our overpopulated world today, something like that is eventually bound to happen, since history repeats itself,” says sophomore at Iowa State, Sarah Wright. “It forces the reader to think about difficult scenarios that are sometimes scary.” 5

FALL MUST-HAVE:
rain boots
By Anna Tafolla
The fall season isn’t always about pumpkin picking, leaf jumping or hot, apple cider perfection. With cooler winds comes darker clouds and soon you’ll be finding yourself holding onto your umbrella, wishing you stayed indoors. Wanting to keep warm and dry seems ideal for the cold, unpredictable weather fall brings us. You could try wrapping plastic around those summer sandals, or stuffing your tennis shoes with thick socks to keep your toes warm. But why shiver every time you open the weather app when the perfect fall boots are just a hop, skip or click away! Rain boots keep you dry, warm and fashionable all at the same time. Here are some ways to style rain boots so that you are ready to take on the fall weather in style.
The drizzle in the air can change your mood for the worse, but having a cute pair of boots can make your day a little brighter. The best approach to walking in Iowa weather is to be prepared for anything. Rain boots are perfect because they look cute even when it hasn’t begun to rain yet. The sleek, smooth texture is candy to the eye in contrast to your woven, thick sweaters and scarfs. There are endless styles, patterns, and colors to choose from giving you countless opportunities to spice up your fall look. Rain boots are available in ankle-high styles and these are perfect if you want a subtle look. Pair these with leggings, a simple tee and a fuzzy hat for a chic, girly look or pair them with dark jeans and sunglasses for a more glamorous look. Not only are they simple but they keep you dry which is what is most important! 8
You may not be hopping in rain puddles, but rain boots reaching just below your knees can protect you on the stronger, windy days. Boots at this length can be found at your local Target for under twenty dollars or you can go as haute couture as Nordstrom and other department stores. You can still wear your favorite fall bottoms such as leggings and jeans with the boots, making it the perfect pumpkin picking outfit. Adding a layer of socks between can add texture to the bottom of your look that can sometimes be forgotten about. Knee high rain boots also look fun and flirty when worn with skirts or dresses. Playing around with colorful boots can add so much to your fall look and make the gloomy days a little less gloomy. They can make some of your favorite fall outfits more comfy by keeping you dry and ready for the storms.
Rain boots can make you go from dreading a rainy day to enjoying the droplets slipping off of your shoes. With multiple lengths, styles and colors rain boots can be a unique and useful addition to your collection. During the days of fall you can never predict what will happen with the weather, so it is always a good idea to be prepared and stylish for whatever may come. 9
ASIAN MENS FASHION war of the wardrobes
By Hailey Allen
New York City, due to it’s amalgam of cultures and creativity, is known as one of the top fashion capitals of the world. However, there are emerging styles coming from overseas. Tokyo’s fashion trends are distinctly different from that of typical Western styles. Young adult men’s fashion from the other side of the globe offers a unique, new perspective on style.
The American Dream As seen with the surge in athleisure wear in recent years, comfort and versatility are key characteristics of Western style. Joggers, white t-shirts and neutral-toned sweatshirts make appearances in most young men’s closets throughout the nation. There’s also a particular fascination with florals, such as tropical-themed collared button ups. Don’t forget about the boat shoes! Rap music and culture has also influenced menswear in the West, popularizing items like snapback hats and oversized sweatshirts. Western men’s fashion doesn’t always allow for much experimentation. This is largely in part because of how America defines masculinity; being into fashion and trying new styles is often viewed as feminine. This can prevent the creation and experimentation in many men’s apparel. Of course, not every individual guy’s style can be pigeon-holed into categories like preppy, jock or hipster, but these are the main trends that make up most of what the typical Western man’s wardrobe consists of.
Far East Movement East Asian style has a different essence. Perhaps due to the vastly different cultural upbringing, men’s fashion has much more fluidity than in the West. Current trends consist of long overcoats, flannels for layering, leather on anything, distressed denim and scarfs. Extra points if these are 10
all worn together in the same outfit. These trends are visible in other Western cultures as well due to global trade and interconnectedness, but they exist in East Asian fashion in a higher concentration. Along with these trends, there is a paradox of monochrome and bright colors. Street style includes neon reds, pinks, yellows and greens due to the huge influence from South Korean pop stars (K-pop). K-pop music videos are huge productions, often costing millions of dollars to produce, and are like Katy Perry after three espresso shots; full of color and flashing lights. This translates into fashion trends like neon-colored bomber jackets and an abundance of wild accessories. In contrast, there’s also a huge trend towards a more minimalist wardrobe. With no logos or patterns whatsoever, these outfits are often monochrome or neutral-colored, and don’t consist of much layering. If there is a pattern used, it’s the tried-and-true black and white stripes. Young men wear simple white button-ups, grey sweaters and dark jeans, and often blush tones are incorporated as well. This trend could stem from Japanese minimalist values. In the densely packed city of Tokyo, people must find ways to make the most out of small spaces, including simplifying their wardrobe to stylish basics. This is also a trend that has caught on in the West to some degree. Despite the language barrier, style is universally understood. Just as New York City uses its abundance of cultures to draw inspiration from, so too does the fashion world. These East Asian trends might just make their way overseas, as some already have.
FALL DATE IDEAS
By Megan Dale
Fall tends to be one of the most beloved times of year, especially in the Midwest. There are so many festive activities to do, either with a significant other or just with friends. Here are a few fall date ideas that you can do in central Iowa, and specifically Ames.
1. Visit an Orchard
4. Check out a Farmer’s Market
Apple orchards and pumpkin patches are a must-do during the fall. Hours of fun can be had at an orchard, and you can usually find one not too far from where you live. Just 20 miles from Ames is Center Grove Orchard, which is a big hit with Iowa State students. Each orchard has its own charm, so there is no doubt that you’ll have a day full of fun picking apples, eating cider donuts and petting farm animals.
2. Go to a Football Game There’s nothing that says fall in America quite like a football game. Even if you’re not a big sports fan, you’re sure to get excited about the crowd’s cheers and the mouth-watering concession food. The camaraderie surrounding this sport can make for an exciting date with a significant other or with friends.
The farmer’s market in Des Moines stays up and running until late October, and the variety of fresh produce will transition with the season. Even if you don’t have the budget to splurge on the items at the different stands, you can still take in the environment and take cute pictures. Farmer’s markets are also pet friendly, so you can bring your dog along too–which is always a perk.
5. Visit Ledges
3. Have a Cozy Night In One of the best parts about fall is that it finally gets chilly enough to want to feel cozy, and what better way to do this than with a date night in! Bake some treats with the supplies you picked up at the orchard, turn on a scary movie and snuggle up. Light some fall-scented candles and get your coziest blanket, and you’ve got yourself a warm, perfect night.
Ledges State Park in Boone, Iowa, during the fall is a beautiful sight, and is definitely worth the visit. It’s close to Ames and it’s a perfect getaway from the craziness of school and responsibilities. Make sure you have your walking shoes, and get ready for an adventure through the beautiful fall woods. Fall is one of the most enjoyable times of year, so make sure you don’t waste these precious months where you can be out in the nice weather enjoying the beautiful colors of autumn.

THE BEST
halloween MAKEUP
By Breanna Bruening
With Halloween coming around the corner, you (along with pretty much everyone else) may be in a frenzy to figure out what transformation you will take this year. Since finding the perfect Halloween look is a daunting task, gathered here are some of this year’s most-loved makeup looks to give you inspiration. These looks are all show-stopping, and best of all, easy. So, if you’re lost on ideas but have lots of makeup handy, one of these picks may just create your perfect costume!
Pop Out In A Crowd Pop-art makeup will definitely make you stand out in your Halloween group; if you’re up for being the center of attention, get your eyeliner ready because the whole look is centered on thick, bold lines. Most of what you’ll accomplish is taking your features—cheekbones, eyebrows, lips, bridge of the nose, and jawline— and using the eyeliner to outline and define. Add in a red lip with some white liner on the fuller points of the lip to create that comic book shine. Use white liner again for the finishing touches to dot up your face; whether it’s just certain areas or the whole canvas is up to you. This bold and beautiful look will turn heads no matter where you go Halloween night.
12
Mer-Made For You The mermaid craze has taken the world by storm this year, and luckily, it’s easy to join the aquatic crowd this Halloween. Anyone can wear a mermaid costume, but challenge yourself to go the extra mile with mermaid makeup! Anything glittery and cool-colored will contribute to this look. You have lots of freedom with this option—any eye look would be great! A halo eye, a cut crease with glitter, sparkly false lashes, anything purple, blue, and/or green will do. What will set this look apart is the “scales,” which can easily be done with the help of a shower loofah or fishnet tights. Putting that net over your face, sweep some of the same shadows you used on your eyes, and lots of highlighter over your cheeks, forehead, and chin/ jawline. Remember, the more glitter, the better!
An A-Doe-rable Look, Without The Filter
We’re all guilty of staring at ourselves with the magic of Snapchat filters over our (already) beautiful faces— sometimes those big eyes or flower crowns are too hard to resist. If you’re a Snap-Addict, then consider going all out with the deer look straight from the app. With some orange and white shadow and some basic black liner, it’s easy to become Bambi-like in just a few minutes. Use orange shadow on your forehead and cheeks for some “fur”, then white shadow on the forehead for the speckles and on the nose as well. Next, dapple on the black eyeliner;use this on the lids to make a wing on your crease and line your eyes, then on the tip of the nose to create the little nose. Pair these simple steps with a warm and fuzzy brown outfit, and you’re set for Halloween night! 13
CULTURAL APPROPRIATION On Halloween
By Claire Murrell
14
zation in charge of the campaign, STARS and Students Teaching About Racism in Society, launched the campaign to reduce the appropriation on their campus, especially on Halloween. “During Halloween, we see offensive costumes,” says Sarah Williams, the then president of STARS in an interview with CNN. “We don’t like it, we don’t appreciate it. We wanted to do a campaign about it saying, ‘Hey, think about this. It’s offensive.’” Professor of Africana Studies at Rutgers University, Jelani Cobb, says it most effectively, telling CNN, “To treat a character like Batman or Superman as a Halloween costume is one thing, but to treat an entire ethnicity as a costume is something else. It suggests that people conflate the actual broad diversity of a culture with caricatures and characters.” Although this trend of dressing in other people’s traditional attire is offensive based on stereotypes, there are still people who think that it is okay to dress and impersonate minority cultures as a joke. However, this is offensive and degrading to these cultures and their history. Be sure to think twice before picking your costumes this Halloween.
When thinking about what I want to be for Halloween, usually I ask myself a few questions: “What is creative and different?”, “What would fit me and my personality?”, “What are my friends going as?””, “What’s affordable?”. Many college students ponder these questions when deciding on their costumes. However, something that slips most people’s minds is what could potentially offend another person, and their entire culture and background. Cultural appropriation is defined as “the use of an aspect of a specific culture by a member of a different culture.” It is seen as controversial because it is generally members of the cultural majority adopting trends from a minority group. This is connected to Halloween due to the prevalence of people who are not apart of certain cultures that wear their traditional clothing as a costume. For example, it has been widely noted and criticised when people dress up in traditional Native American attire, or go as a “Mexican,” wearing sombreros and panchos. This is most offensive to people of this culture because the costumes are generally based off of degrading stereotypes. This especially goes for cultures that face discrimination and oppression by the majority culture. This is an issue that has been a hot topic at many college campuses. Across the country, there are often informative notices posted on their websites about how to be culturally appropriate and sensitive on the holiday. In 2011, students at Ohio University did a poster campaign called “We’re a Culture, not a Costume,” where students of different minority backgrounds held up images of others impersonating their culture. FALL FUSIONS
By Grace Lundquist
There is something about fall that sends us into coffee shops a little too often than our wallets would like. Maybe it’s the smell of fall spices that taunts us whenever we walk by. Or as millennials, our duty to post the cute, fall cups on every social media platform we have. Or perhaps it’s the fact that it’s so convenient. Surely, us college students don’t have time to run a full-fledged coffee shop out of our tiny kitchenettes and study. Or do we? I gathered some recipes off Pinterest that’ll turn you into a selftrained barista in no time. Let’s start simple.
Ingredients: (1 large pitcher) -1 64oz bottle of apple juice -1 frozen orange juice concentrate -½ bottle of cranberry juice -1 cup pear nectar -Ice Optional Ingredients: -Sliced apple and pears for decoration -Ginger ale or lemon lime soda for fizz Steps: Pour apple juice, orange juice concentrate, cranberry juice and pear nectar into large pitcher or punch bowl. Stir to combine ingredients. Add ice, fruit slices and soda (if you’re using it). A classic, of course:
Slow Cooker Apple Cider Ingredients: (about 10 cups) -8 Gala apples, cored and quartered -4 cinnamon sticks -1 tablespoon Whole Cloves -1 teaspoon Allspice -10 cups water -½ cup brown sugar Steps: Place your quartered apples into a slow cooker.
Autumn Harvest Punch
Add cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and allspice. Then pour in the 10 cups of water. Cook on high for 3 hours. Mash apples with a potato masher. Add in brown sugar. Cook an additional 1-3 hours on low. Strain the solids from the liquids. Discard solids and store liquid in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
And last, but certainly not least: What is fall without the one and only, PSL?
For a refreshing fall afternoon:
Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Ingredients: (2 mugs) -2 cups milk (dairy or nondairy) -2 tablespoons pumpkin puree -1-3 tablespoons sugar (however much sweetness you prefer) -1 tablespoon vanilla extract -½ teaspoon pumpkin spice -½ cup strong, hot coffee For serving: -Pinch of pumpkin pie spice -Whipped cream Steps: Add milk, pumpkin puree and sugar to a saucepan over medium. Heat until hot, do NOT boil. Remove saucepan from heat and whisk in vanilla, pumpkin pie spice and coffee. Divide mixture between 2 mugs. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. Enjoy! 15
4 WAYS TO STYLE
A BLANKET SCARF
By Christin Koch
With Autumn, quickly “fall”ing upon us, the trend of the Blanket Scarf is soon to become a popular item again, and with that comes the struggle of trying to find a cute way to style such a large and bulky piece. It’s always intimidating to see cute girls all over Pinterest wearing this clothing piece in such a stylish way, wondering how they achieve the perfect blanket scarf look, but hopefully after reading this article you will feel as if you too can be a master of the blanket scarf too!
1.
The Classic Drape Simply fold the square blanket scarf into a half triangle, and then drape it over your neck, cross in the back and pull the two ends to the front. Voila!
2.
A Belted Poncho Fold the scarf into a half triangle and drape the scarf over your shoulders and use a belt to hold everything in place around your waist. This technique is very similar to the Shawl technique, just with a touch of adding a cute belt! 16
4.
The Infinity Scarf For this one, you will fold the scarf into a half triangle. Then, starting from one end, begin to roll it loosely. Next, drape over your neck and tuck in the loose ends. Another option to achieve the Infinity Scarf look is to try to tie the ends of your blanket scarf together followed by wrapping it around your neck as you would with any other infinity scarf.
3.
Shawl Definitely the simplest of them all, simply fold the square scarf into a half triangle and drape it over your body as a shawl/blanket.
There you have it, four fun and simple ways to achieve the perfect blanket scarf look! This is a cozy, yet simple look that will keep you comfy all fall and winter long, as well as easily being able to be dressed up or dressed down. So, invest in a blanket scarf, snuggle in and start achieving the Pinterest look of your dreams!

LAYERING METHODS THAT INCLUDE YOUR entire WARDROBE ‘Tis the season for confusing weather!
By Kajsa Hallberg
Chilly mornings and hot afternoons continue to hit campus as everyone waits for the days of autumn to finally set in. With this weather, comes the inevitable question of what to wear when mornings are 50 degrees and afternoons can hit close to 80 degrees. The answer? Layering! Not only does this method help students handle the fluctuating temperatures of an Iowa autumn, it also proves a good method for dealing with chilly days and hot classrooms. It ends up allowing a lot of creativity with one’s wardrobe. What many people do not consider is that layering is more than just pairing a flannel shirt or cardigan with a tank or t-shirt. Layering one’s clothes can be done in multiple ways and allows for neverending combinations of garments, patterns and accessories. One method of layering clothes is the aforementioned cardigan and/or flannel trick. However, recent runway trends show designers pushing the trend further. Many designers are becoming more open to the look of jacket, flannel, shirt and even scarf with it. So many layers, which was once considered tacky, is being accepted more and more by the industry. Cardigans can also be layered with a crop top and camisole, allowing for more chances to play with colors and prints. Another way to layer clothes is by mixing summer and fall items together while the afternoons are still hot. A shirt with a flannel or cardigan layered on top with shorts and boots is not only a cute, seasonal transition look, but it also is flexible with differing temperatures throughout the day. Ponchos, shawls and wraps also work very well for this look if you are looking for something light and breathable. Cardigans and similar wraps will look cute with your favorite sun dress for those that still want summer vibes. Turning leaves does not mean that the summer staples need to be packed away just yet. These ideas combined with some of your own will continue to bring life into the items beloved by summer.
18
Clothing is not the only category that can work with layering. Combining patterns is a staple of autumn and is what makes it one of the most creative seasons. The trick is knowing how to work with color and the intensity of the pattern. Mixing two or more busy patterns will only give both the wearer and any viewers a headache. If working with intense patterns, choose one as a staple and a milder print as an accent. Also, look at the size of the patterns. Two large patterns will not meld as well as a large pattern and a small/medium pattern. This helps prevent over stimulating the eye and gives a focal point to the look. Color is also extremely important when mixing patterns. Keeping all the prints within the same color scheme is the safest approach. Using complementary colors, such as orange and blue, with an already busy scheme risks too much clashing. Complementary colors may already be used in the pattern, so it makes it that much harder to introduce new colors into the scheme. Another method is to use a more neutral pattern or color against a busy pattern to allow the dominant pattern to pop. Different shades of grey are especially good for this approach. More contrast can also be given by putting a white-heavy item with a darker pattern, and vice versa. If anything, have a clear idea of which pattern will stand out, then choosing the accent(s) is easier. One other way to take advantage of layering items is with accessories. The easiest way to play with this idea is with jewelry. Necklaces of differing lengths, chokers and bracelets are all options that can be used to play with layering. Knowing how to work with textures is important with this idea. Fake pearls and leather pendants, for example, may not be the best idea. Instead, opt for complementary textures and designs. Necklaces with smaller beads can work with leather and chain pendants. Bracelets made in different sizes with varying beads and chains could be a welcome change from the usual bangles. Smaller chokers can be layered with medium and long necklaces to keep from looking too busy. Like patterns, size of the jewelry matters as well. One large staple piece will look better on its own or with a small piece compared to multiple small and medium pieces. Additionally, scarves can be combined for pops
of color and pattern close to the face while also being warm and comfy in cold temperatures. The accessory method works well with varying temperatures because not all scarves are thick and heavy, and those that are can be easily adjusted into a headband or removed. Layering items for flexible outfits is arguably one of the best parts of fall fashion. The method allows for a lot of creativity, especially with the restricted wardrobe space college brings. Whether it be with whole garments, patterns or accessories, layering is the perfect way to transition into the colder season. The final thing to remember when layering is to do so with confidence. Do not be afraid to experiment with two or three items. Fashion is about creativity and what looks good on each individual person. So, have fun and walk to class with a head held high, knowing that cute and functional is always possible.

THE ART OF COZY LIVING:
hygge
By Halee Olson
Close your eyes and picture those hallmark images of sweater-clad folks cradling warm mugs, or the satisfying feeling of pinning photos of perfectly crafted, cozy living rooms to your “Future Home” Pinterest board. That aesthetic we crave, especially during chillier months, has a name: hygge. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is the Danish way of being, and it can be roughly translated into English as ‘cosiness.’ It is the art of fully embracing life’s simple pleasures, such as fuzzy blankets or game nights with friends.
20
The Danes originally adopted the hygge lifestyle as a means of dealing with their long, dark winters, but now it’s a globalized trend. The New Yorker reports that at least six books have been published about hygge since its rise to fame in 2016.
of healthy living.”
In an interview with CBS, Meik Wiking, the author of “The Little Book of Hygge,” noted that he believes that the most defining feature of Denmark’s happiness is their democratic socialism, which provides them with things like universal healthcare and free college education.
When you indulge in your treat, whatever it may be, try to do so in a comforting environment. You can achieve comfort by decorating your living space in a way that best suits you, like with pretty pillows or a candle that brings back a good memory. Lighting is very important in the Danish home; in fact, the Chicago Tribune wrote that Danes burn more candles per capita than anyone else in Europe.
“If you asks Danes, ‘Are you happily paying your taxes?’ eight out of ten will say, ‘Yes, to some degree, I’m happily paying my tax,’ Wiking says. “And I think that’s because people are aware of the huge benefits they get in terms of quality of life.” Outlets such as CNN and Time Warner Inc. can both agree that America categorizes money as something of great importance. For the Danes, not so much. In hygge culture, there is a separation of wealth and well-being. Once their basic needs are met, Danes opt to strive for factors such as meaningful relationships or contentment, while Americans tend to prioritize work and possessions. Wiking uses the example of being happy while taking a yoga class without wearing a $100 pair of leggings, making the point that materialistic things are of little importance in hygge.
If you like to pour just a little bit too much cream into your coffee, that’s okay. If you sometimes eat all the Oreos after your roommates go to bed, that’s okay too.
Another integral aspect of hygge is social time. This could be with friends, family or your significant other. Wiking says that disconnecting from devices is important for hygge downtime. Set the cell phone aside and try baking, going on a walk or just having a chat with whomever you are in the company of. Denmark has repeatedly been dubbed the happiest country in the world by the U.N.’s World Happiness Report, and the Danes’ aptitude for coziness, hominess and togetherness might just have something to do with that. Try the hygge lifestyle for a week and see how it might alter your attitude!
So, how does one ‘hygge’? Hygge is the warm feeling you get in your belly when you are content, and it works on a very person-to-person basis–it’s different for everyone. Things that make you happy should be embraced, but there is a general consensus of what is considered to be “hygge” inducing. A key ingredient to the hygge lifestyle is allowing yourself to indulge. In an interview with today.com, Wiking explains, “Hygge is about being kind to yourself–giving yourself a treat, and giving yourself a break from the demands of 21

IN LOVE WITH VESTS
By Lexi Stumpf
Who doesn’t love a good vest? They are the easiest item to throw on and automatically transform your outfit into fall. Wearing a basic long-sleeve shirt and jeans might be your go-to look, but add a vest and some boots to that outfit and you’re instantly a fall fashionista. To take it a step further, you can accessorize your outfit by adding a mustard scarf. Mustard is THE color for fall, plus it adds a fun pop of color to your outfit. However, you can’t wear the same vest every day. Here are some of the hottest vests right now to add variety- and more importantly, a taste of fall to your wardrobe.
Let’s start with a classic- The North Face, puffy vest. Although a little on the pricey side, this vest is a great investment and a college must-have. It serves the dual purpose of keeping you warm and insulated while simultaneously allowing you to look super trendy. For extra chilly days, layer it with a crew neck or a hoodie underneath. This is great for a comfy/lazy day outfit to pair with leggings, sneakers and a baseball cap. With all of those items, you’re set to take lazy day to a new level of trendy.

Last, but certainly not least is the suede vest with faux fur lining. These beautiful pieces are so classy and sophisticated, you’ll feel like you’re a business woman walking the streets of New York. With such a complex piece, these are best worn layered with a simpler piece such as a solid long sleeve or button up. Jeans and loafer slip-ons are also the way to go with this look. If you really want to spice this up, try wearing a bandana or light scarf around your neck.
No matter if you’re going for a comfy, fun or classy look, there’s a vest for you. You can never go wrong with layers. Fall is the perfect time to layer it up. The vest is just the finishing touch to your otherwise basic outfit. Not to mention, an extra layer won’t hurt when it’s below 50 degrees out. Overall, vests are the way to go this fall. 23
ANDROGYNY IN AMES As fashion and the world itself become more progressive, unisex clothing appears more often in major cities than before, but what about in Ames? Her Campus, a website described as a new-media brand for the empowered college woman, made a list of 12 gender-neutral online clothing brands and the list of options continues to grow! Most stores here in Ames don’t tailor to those looking for androgynous items, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of luck. Thrift stores are a great place for someone new to the style. These type of stores provide a variety of options all in one place, making it easier and faster than going to the department store, trying to find the right thing. Plus, it eliminates the awkwardness of browsing a “Women’s” clothing store and a salespeople asking, “Are you shopping for your girlfriend?” Ames has a variety of thrift stores such as Random Goods, The Salvation Army and Overflow Thrift Store. It doesn’t take a fashion expert to rock gender-neutral pieces. Women do it all the time when buying men’s flannels or graphic tees. Sometimes the sizing of women’s clothing can be different than men’s, but it only takes a quick trip to the changing room to know if something fits. However, does gender-neutral clothing really have a relevance in Ames? Carolyn Schar, a junior in apparel merchandising and design with an emphasis in design, finds gender-neutral clothing hard to come by in Ames. “I think that maybe certain people use [androgyny] in Ames, but I don’t think it works overall in the city of Ames. Ames is a very stereotypical Midwestern city. We’re not like New York City or Los Angeles where they have a lot

of people who want to do that,” says Schar. Schar mostly sees male fashion students dressing gender-neutral: “I have a couple acquaintances from class that dress more gender-neutral. One is transgender and he dresses more gender-neutral. I definitely know a handful of guys who paint their nails and wear leggings because they enjoy women’s fashion and they’re not going to let stereotypes decide what they wear.” Schar mostly learned about androgyny through her own research outside of class. If a student showed interest in learning more about gender-neutral clothing, they could receive assistance from professors, but typically professors focus on women’s clothing, according to Schar. Despite the lack of prevalent androgyny in Ames, the fact that some students feel comfortable wearing gender-neutral clothing on campus means we’re getting somewhere. The media and fashion designers continue to show fashion that breaks the gender norms. If other countries can embrace different gender styles, then perhaps Ames soon can too. While studying fashion design in Paris, Schar noticed a difference between French fashion and American fashion. “I feel that men in Paris are a lot more confident in their fashion choices and they wear clothes that aren’t necessarily stereotypical men’s clothing. It might not be strictly androgynous, but it’s more femme. I think if Ames was more exposed to that way of dressing, the fashion here may change.”
HOW TO:
Layer For Fall
By Hailey Allen
Fall fashion can get a little tricky. It’s freezing in the morning, warm in the afternoon and cold again at night. So how does one know what to wear? Fashion and lifestyle photographer, Peter Claussen, says layering is key to staying comfortable and looking stylish during fall. Upgrade your fall wardrobe using these 3 looks.
Look 1 “The Classic” Step 1: The t-shirt is the most essential part of any wardrobe. It works perfectly as a base for layering. Choose a neutral colored t-shirt, or a favorite band tee to get started. Step 2: Add some warmth. Pick out a flannel or a sweatshirt to put over your first layer. Is it even fall yet if you haven’t started wearing your flannels? Claussen says, “A flannel can make a basic white tee instantly more stylish. It’s a quick, easy outfit.” Step 3: The jacket is the most important part of this look. This is where your personal style can be shown off. Choose a denim jacket or a green military jacket for a more casual laid back look, or switch it up with a leather jacket to give off a retro vibe.
Look 2 “The Dad Look” Step 1: Start with a flannel for this look. Flannels are a staple for fall wardrobes, as they are both comfortable and warm. You can pick from any typical fall colors, but nothing really beats the classic red.
Step 3: Adding a cardigan may sound like overkill after putting on a sweater, but it can get pretty cold during the fall. This creates a stylish outfit without having to get a coat. The greatest part about layering is that pieces can be easily added and removed to accommodate temperature changes.
Look 3 “The Art Student” Step 1: For this look, the base will start with a collared shirt. Deep reds and greens will compliment the fall weather, but any solid colors or patterns are welcome. You can also choose to button it all the way up, or leave it partially undone. Step 2: Finish this look with a leather jacket. It’s simple, but effective. “Leather jackets give off a cool vibe. I wish I had a better adjective to use than ‘cool’…they’re just a step up I guess. I feel like they’re nicer,” says Claussen. No matter how the temperature decides to act, layering is a great way to stay warm and still look good before lugging out the the heavy coat from storage!
Step 2: The next step is to choose a sweater! When finding a sweater for this look, make sure it will compliment the flannel. Go for one that’s neutral colored or one that matches a color in the flannel. 25
