MONEY CONSCIOUS COLLEGE STUDENT
BY: CHeryl TSANG
Attending college can be stressful: academic performance, interpersonal relationships, student loans and not to mention food or textbooks. Of course we understand that pain when you don’t want to overspend your budget or ask your parents while still trying to enjoy your college life. We have you covered with these tips and tricks to get rid of the burden of being broke.
1. Financial Planning It may sound cheesy, but it works wonders! Save receipts of your purchases – no matter how big or small. Take it even further as to record the amounts to know your spending habits better. At the end of each month add up all of your expenses and see where your money in going. Take some time and see where you can cut back now to get ahead in the future.
2. Make the most out of university facilities Why is college tuition so expensive? Where does my money go? The answer is simple! The money is mostly spent on university facilities! When the university provide you with various facilities, you gotta make use of them so that you’re not wasting your money! You can use these services basically everywhere and all the time! Want to stay healthy but not splurging on gym membership? State Gym is free of charge.
You can do whatever ball game activities with your friends and doing gym there! Do you know there are also free fitness classes taught by professional fitness instructors on a regular basis? No registration required! Simply walk in and get started! Check out ISU Recreation Services website. 3. Get a Job It is the most direct way not to get yourself into financial crisis when you want to strike a balance between budgets and expenses. ISU has provided tons of job opportunities for the students, ranging from working at ISU Dining or Catering, being a staff member at State Gym, to driving CyRide. For example, if you work at the dining section, they will offer you meal coupons that you can get free meals; in this way you can cut costs on buying food while you won’t starve yourself. Getting employed not only gives you money, but you can also gain some hands-on experience which may be useful for your future career!
4. Buy or Rent Used Textbooks Brand new textbooks from university bookstores can be expensive, for example a biology textbook can be up to $300 and sometimes it doesn’t include any lab materials. To save up a bit, buy second-hand textbooks from either used bookstores near campus or online bookstores. Textbooks they sell are usually heavily discounted and book conditions are satisfactory. Prices can be lower even with shipping cost compared with purchasing new ones. Another way to save money in this area is to borrow or buy textbooks from other students or friends at a price that is way more reasonable.

DAY TO NIGht The typical college student can easily be described as “on the go.” Whether this is going from an 8am to work, dinner or a night out with friends; it is important for your college wardrobe to be as interchangeable as your day to day life. Having a few basic pieces that can easily be worn time and time again without people ever noticing is vital in the college student’s wardrobe. Whether you are tight on space because of a cramped dorm room closet or living out of a suitcase because you are studying abroad, there are a few key pieces that will take your look from day to night with only a few minuscule changes.
Bodysuits seem as if they are all the rage today, and there is a reason for it. They are perfect for any occasion and can easily be worn during the day and night. Since there is such a variety of bodysuits, start by choosing one you feel comfortable in and that would be appropriate to wear for class, but edgy enough for the evening. During the day layering is important. I suggest an oversized fall sweater or jacket that has a pop of color. For the bottoms wear your favorite jeans with a pair of booties. To transform this to an acceptable night time look, there are only a few minor changes needed. For a little bit of an edgier look replace the sweater with a leather jacket or a flannel wrapped around the waist. You can either choose to wear this with jeans and the same shoes as before or make sure you have a few other items on hand. An A-line skirt and over the knee boots would be perfect for going out. If you do not have over the knee boots a trick is wearing a pair of high knee socks with your booties. That way you can still keep warm, but wear a cute skirt.
A few other details to consider when transforming your look are hair and make-up. Wear your hair up or natural during the day with minimal make-up. Loose curls, a dramatic lip color and a few extra swipes of mascara is all you need to transform at night.
While it is nice to have a new outfit for every occasion, this is usually not attainable for your typical college student, so being able to alter your look is an essential part of dressing for success in college.
DArk lipstick: DO or DONT
Plum, burgundy, black cherry, and a hundred more vampy shades have been donning many a lipstick tube these days. The dark lipstick trend seems to be at its peak. Why not jump on board? In the height of Autumn, this is as good a time as any to run to your go-to cosmetic store, beeline to the lipstick isle and turn a demure look into a killer one. But when pulling off such a bold look there are a few things to remember… Keep your skin tone in mind. This trend is definitely one that ladies of all skin tones can take part in, however make sure to snag the right hue for your complexion. It’s true, darker skin tones can pull off some radically sultry shades but don’t count yourself out if you err on the side of fair. There are plenty of celebrities and beauty gurus out there these days rocking snow white
BY: Ashley lees skin and a tube of plum-red lipstick. Worst case-scenario you end up looking like Rosalie Cullen and… well that really isn’t a bad thing at all is it? Let your lips speak for themselves. One way to turn this trend into a more wearable day look is to keep the rest of your makeup understated; bare cheeks, minimal eye makeup and a simple hairstyle will compliment your pout perfectly and help to keep you from looking a little took glam for everyday life. Do however take a cue from the Lily Collin’s playbook and pair them with a bold brow. Keep it creative. Remember, your makeup is supposed to be an expression of who you are and when it comes down to it, you’re the artist. If you want to rock some borderline black lipstick to your 8 am class, go right ahead.
