NEUTRAL
Spice up your fall wardrobe with gender-neutral apparel
FASHION
Genevieve Cristoforo
Heading into the fall season, it’s exciting to have a whole different wardrobe to create outfits from. There are staples from the previous year still hidden in the back of your closet you can pull out, but it’s always fun to go shopping for a few new pieces. Throughout this year, trends originally considered to be menswear have quickly become gender-neutral and are worn by everyone. Catherine Prough, a junior in psychology, said she appreciates how she no longer has to wear bright colors and dainty clothing to feel feminine. She also discussed how gender-neutral trends are easy to keep up with and fit her college budget. “I now can run over to Goodwill and find a wide selection of graphic tees and pants for less than $4 each,” Prough said. “I like how I no longer feel the need to be all dressed up in order to feel pretty. It’s more of a simple fashion, but it still makes me feel confident.” There are many ways for you to feel confident going into this fall season. With these four styles you can achieve a fall wardrobe that makes you feel comfortable and truly yourself. Cargo pants Not only are these pants comfortable, but they’re universal and can go with any outfit of your choice. Keep it casual with a simple graphic tee and sneakers, or dress it up with a cute blouse or sweater with heels. Cargo pants can be found in an assortment of colors such as army green, black, navy or khaki, making them a staple item going into the fall.
Blazers These jackets tend to have a stigma that they’re only for business professionals, but it’s becoming more popular for men and women to rock them as casual wear. Blazers often come in many different colors and designs, making them a lively and easy way to dress up any jean and turtleneck duo. Finish it off with a pair of boots, and you’re good to go. Graphic Tees Oversized graphic tees really took off last summer. Wear them with biker shorts and sneakers to make for a comfy yet trendy outfit. To transition your tee to the fall, layer it over a turtleneck or under a jacket or blazer to give off an edgy vibe. Beanies This is the perfect accessory to any grunge look. Plus: you won’t have to worry about your hair all day, and you’ll stay warm on your walk to class. There are various brands of beanies to choose from, but a couple popular ones are Carhartt and Adidas – students can often be seen sporting them on campus. While it can be worn with pretty much any outfit, a beanie looks especially stylish with a flannel and graphic tee or an oversized sweatshirt.

FLUIDITY
Fashion fluidity for the modern man Sierra Hoeger The crowd was in awe when Billy Porter walked the red carpet at the Academy Awards earlier this year. With a train trailing behind him and an ensemble described by Forbes as “gender-bending,” that moment exemplified how fluidity within menswear is making its way into mainstream culture. Porter isn’t the only celebrity to openly express themselves through dress by wearing clothing stereotypically viewed as feminine. Harry Styles, Elton John, Troye Sivan and Jonathan Van Ness are all examples of celebrities who are proving clothing doesn’t have to be separated into categories. Fluidity isn’t just about fashion; the idea that men aren’t in touch with their emotions and have a hard time allowing themselves to be vulnerable is another social norm challenged by breaking clothing stereotypes. “I was looking at the social expectations of what it was to be masculine or feminine, which is what gender really is,” said David Wahl, sociology Ph.D. candidate at Iowa State. Wahl conducts research projects relating to human sexuality, sex and gender. “I had to look at what it meant to disregard or transfer between what it is to be masculine and feminine.” Ian Alexander is one of few transgender celebrities who portrays a character on television that also identifies as transgender. Alexander plays Buck Vu on Netflix’s “The OA.” In an interview with Teen Vogue, Alexander encouraged men to express their emotions and avoid bottling them up, as this leads to unhealthy consequences.
.21
“Men are socialized and conditioned to reject emotional vulnerability,” said Alexander. “Showing emotions is associated with showing weakness or being ‘feminine.’” Anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, can experiment with fashion. One of the most well-known men to do so is Harry Styles. “Harry Styles will wear something that’s accepted as a more feminine article of clothing, and while a lot of people, and certainly Harry Styles’ fans, will be fine with that, there’s also a lot of people who will stigmatize Harry for that, which is horrible,” Wahl said. “A large part of my research is an attempt to normalize a person’s sexuality and move us away from this stigmatizing.” From being in a boy band and having his outfits meticulously arranged for him to taking full creative control of his wardrobe, Styles has become an icon in the gender-fluid fashion category. “He channels gender ambiguity of previous generations of rock stars,” writes Rachel Tashjian for GQ. “Styles’ gender ambiguity imparts openness and freedom of identity.” Styles is known to work with gender-fluid designers and wear pieces that are equal parts casual and unexpected, and this makes him stand out among other celebrities. Wahl added that further awareness and well-known figures normalizing gender fluidity, others will start to be more accepting. “It’s getting out there; it’s normalizing it, rather than it being a [ridiculing], or triggering or shaming event,” Wahl said. “Social media has a huge part in this, not only depicting it – what it is to be gender-fluid – but defining it, and letting people know this is what it is.”

MAKEUP
Moody makeup to experiment with this fall Jaclyn Fraise For many of us, experimenting with beauty allows us to express our creativity. Applying makeup can function not only as a way to enhance our features, but also as a mirror to our inner-selves. Makeup can display a reflection of your mood, emphasized by gorgeous tones from eye shadow and vibrant hues from lip colors. A lot of the time we dress according to how we feel and to showcase our personality to those around us—makeup has the same effect. You can probably recall sitting in art class in elementary school, learning about complementary colors and mixing different shades together, comparing the warm and cool tones. Creating makeup looks works the same: red, yellow and orange are warm colors, while blues and greens are cool tones. You can alter these colors and turn them into darker shades or lighter shades depending on how you blend them out.

stability and harmony. With darker colors, you can create the smokey eye we’re all familiar with, and with proper blending, you can create a cool and collected makeup look to showcase your relaxed vibe. Accent points While doing your makeup, the colors you choose and placement can take a look from day to night, softer to edgier. Wanting a flawless look with a deep smokey eye and bronzer, or are you wanting a neutral glow? The accent points on your face are the eyes, lips and cheeks. By emphasizing these areas, you’re able to achieve several different moods by pulling together softer or darker hues. According to “Makeup First,” a school of makeup artistry, a natural look requires staying within the same temperature as the skin’s undertone can bring out softer colors by pulling hues with cool or warm undertones. Playing with glittery or dewy products can be used to highlight your features no matter what tone you’re leaning toward. .31

etting back our clocks for daylight savings means it’s now dark outside by 5 p.m. This can hinder your mood and make you feel tired, down or like you’re in a slump. Whether it’s spending time with good friends, grabbing a favorite snack or throwing on some music, there are plenty of little things that can help you cheer up when you’re feeling down. TREND interviewed some Iowa State students to see how they deal with the seasonal sadness. Here’s what they had to say. Gabriella Aguirre, freshman in communication studies “After a long and challenging dance team practice, it feels good to go home and relax with some coffee and watch Grey’s Anatomy. Before a stressful class, coffee and Netflix helps keep me caffeinated and awake, which is all that I need to conquer the day.” Jacob Raatz, junior in global resource systems “Being outside helps clear my head during tough times. I love walking around campus and seeing all the fall scenery. It really helps clear my head and reminds me of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place.” Melissa VanHorn, senior in criminal justice “Dancing is the best way for me to work out anything I’m going through. Sometimes I can’t find the words to explain what’s wrong, but my body kind of solves it for me when I dance.”
Collin Lamb, junior in supply chain management “After a tough day, being around my cat, Nora, helps me keep a positive attitude. Feeding her and petting her makes her happy, and in return, makes me happy.” Jessica Bigelow, senior in finance “I love to wind down by watching youtube after a long day. It’s fun to watch what other people are doing with their life, especially in places like New York, Seattle or San Francisco. It makes me feel good when I’m staying globally connected.” Lauren Niehm, junior in apparel, merchandising and design “I find myself the happiest when I am shopping at local businesses. I want to start my own business in the future, so I love being able to support other businesses in the community through their livelihood,” Niehm said. Brady Green, sophomore in mechanical engineering “Golfing helps me put a smile on my face. Golf is such a simple yet challenging game that has the ability to take my mind off of whatever I was worrying about. It allows me to focus on the task at hand.” Even though there are lots of things that have the potential to bring you down, there are endless others you can do to try to make it better. Find out what works best for you, and go with it.

HOW TO TA POST-GRA

ACKLE AD LIFE
LIFESTYLE
How to tackle post-grad life Kendra Esau As the fall semester winds down and finals season nears, students graduating in May might find themselves panicking about the transition from college to adulthood. The final semester of school can be a stressful time as the prospects of finding a job, living on your own and being truly independent loom ahead. However, making the leap into post-grad life doesn’t have to be terrifying. Here are some tips to help aid the transition. Plan a work-life balance You will often see young, new professionals brag about how they are constantly “grinding” and “hustling” at their new jobs. While it is important to work hard and establish yourself as a twenty-something, it is also important to remember that work shouldn’t define your life. Emma Hassemer is a 2019 Iowa State graduate and former editor-in-chief of TREND magazine. She now works In Chicago as an assistant editor for No Limit Agency. “Working full-time Monday through Friday makes me value my weekends more and encourages me to spend time with my family and friends,” Hassemer said. “It’s really important to stay organized and find that healthy balance between your work life and social life.” Striking a healthy work-life balance as you begin your career will ensure that you don’t burn yourself out and will make transitioning to working full-time less daunting. Start applying now A large part of the stress you may experience as graduation approaches could come from not having a job secured. “Start applying ASAP—it’s never too early to apply for jobs,” Hassemer said. “I began applying for jobs the summer going into my senior year, and I didn’t actually accept a position until after I graduated.”
Beginning your job hunt early will ensure that you feel on top and in control of your post-grad life. Applying to positions earlier also allows you to search for the best opportunities and find a job you’re excited about. Don’t forget your passions As a college student, you have more free time now than you will after graduation. It’s easy for passions and side hustles to be thrown to the wayside when the 40-hour work weeks begin. Although it may seem impossible to do anything other than collapse on the couch and turn on Netflix once you’re home after a long day, it’s important that you keep working on the things you care about. “Every weekend I try to set some time aside to develop a blog concept and take photos,” Hassemer said. “I also spend my time on the train commuting downtown from the suburbs to work on my blog.” By planning out specific times you can focus on your passions and hobbies, it is much more likely that you will continue to pursue them after graduation. .43
