BOX BRINGS GESTURE CONTROL TO COMPUTERS Californian start-up Leap Motion has developed a small device called "The Leap" that allows users to control computers by hand with millimetre accuracy - without touching the screen. The device is attached via USB and placed in front of the monitor, where its sensors establish an interactive 3D space about 4 cubic feet large. Users interact with a computer using a finger instead of a mouse. Gesturing upward or downward scrolls the screen. "Pinch and zoom" allows them to zoom in and out on content.

GOOGLE PRESENTS AUGMENTED REALITY GLASSES As part of an initiative called "Project Glass", Google recently offered its employees the prototype of multifunctional augmented reality glasses and is asking them to send them feedback via Google Plus. The wrap-around glasses feature a see-through lens that can stream everything from the weather to maps to text messages, in real-time. In addition, they can record video, take pictures and the device sends and receives messages through voice commands. Users have reported that the glasses let technology get out of the way, as they no longer need to use a variety of devices.

E-INK WALLPAPER AS TV OF THE FUTURE US-based security and DRM specialist NDS has unveiled a concept that shows how wallpaper using coloured e-ink could replace other display devices. So-called e-ink only uses energy when it actually changes configuration (not including possible back-lighting), making it extremely energy efficient. In very small amounts, e-ink can be applied to walls to appear seemingly invisible when inactive. When active, however, it could be used to watch television or as a computer monitor.

ONLINE ROLE-PLAYING GAME USES TWITTER The online role-playing game "Tweenk" from Alex Shteinikov lets users play with their Twitter accounts by themselves. The various actions and battles are represented by tweets and answers which are rewarded with points, and take users up to higher levels. Players can also form guilds with others and compete against each other. The concept here was to develop a simple game that can be played without requiring too much time yet which is still entertaining and fun. For example, a "Good morning" tweet allows the avatar to find a new sword.

The sensors move independently of the thumbsticks and create a gentle touch. The controller was demonstrated with a fishing game, in which the sensors can move on the user's thumbs to simulate the feeling of the waves. It can also be used to simulate everything from explosions and gun recoil to the feeling of a soldier crawling around on his belly. The technology is set to be expanded to include vibrations and sound.

CONTROLLING JAVASCRIPT AND HTML5 WITH KINECT An open-source project has resulted in the development of a software development kit (SDK) that makes it possible to use a Microsoft Kinect to control HTML5 and JavaScript programmed webpages. The freely available software lets developers program their own software for Kinect that converts predefined gestures into a command for a website or application written in HTML5 and JavaScript. This potentially means gesture-controlling browser games or being able to try on clothes from online retailers in a real-time browser-based app.

FLOATING LEDS WITH A SENSE OF TRADITION Panasonic has held a special kind of event as part of the Tokyo Hotaru Festival in which 100,000 LEDs made by EVERLED lit up the Sumida River. The floating LEDs represented the festival's name, which means fireflies, as well as the actual fireflies that once lit up the river. The event also drew on the Japanese custom of setting lit candles afloat on water in memory of the dead. To ensure the event's environmentallyfriendly credentials, the LEDs were fitted with solar cells, charged beforehand and gathered from the water by net after the event.

FLOATING FILM FESTIVAL The Film on the Rocks Yao Noi film festival in Phuket, Thailand, took visitors by surprise with a floating cinema in the middle of the Nai Pi Lae lagooon on Kudu Island. The installation was set up by German architect Ole Scheeren. A screen was erected next to the two rocks and viewers were seated a few metres in front of it. The design was inspired by the custom of local fishermen who often build floating rafts to farm lobsters. All the parts used were made of recycled material and donated to the local community when the festival finished.

PROTOTYPE POSTER PLAYS MUSIC The prototype "Listening Post", created by the British company Novalia, is a poster that can play music via printed circuits made with conductive ink. This interactive poster plays a short clip of a band's music when a thumbnail image is pressed. It combines printed conductive ink trails with a small circuit board holding a speaker and a small amount of memory. In future, the posters will be connected to the internet so that the songs on them can be updated.

CAR TURNED INTO ROULETTE TABLE The Casinó Campione d’Italia recently converted 50 taxis in Como into mobile roulette tables. One wheel on each of the taxis thus became a roulette wheel with an integrated ball. Before starting, customers could pick a number and if the ball was in the right position at the end of their journey, they could win a dinner at the casino's restaurant. If they lost, they were given a consolation prize of free entry to the casino. With this campaign, the Casinó Campione d’Italia boosted its number of visitors by 14%.

"SOUND SHOWER" FOR OUT-OF-HOME MARKETING The mobile network O2 recently installed a large monitor inside a shopping centre and set up a special speaker in front of it whose sound could only be heard within a few square metres of space. Originally developed by the Americans and Soviets during the 1960s for underwater sonar systems, this technology also makes it possible to send out sound waves in a specific direction outside of water, too. In this case, a circle on the floor attracted shoppers to stand on it and they then heard the sounds accompanying the advert shown on the screen above them.

PLAYSTATION TAKES OVER BRUSSELS METRO STATION Using the slogan "The World Is In Play", Sony recently launched its new "PlayStation Vita" onto the market and turned the biggest metro station in Brussels into a football stadium. The campaign plays with the idea of the portable version of the games console merging real life and gaming. The station's walls were therefore covered with posters to create the illusion of thousands of fans. A real soccer team was then brought in, together with their euphoric coach, and showed off their skills to the passengers, who could also pose for photos.
