WITHDRAWING MONEY VIA THE SMARTPHONE The Royal Bank of Scotland and the National Westminster Bank are now allowing customers in the UK to withdraw money via their smartphones. People first have to download the smartphone app and then enter the desired amount of cash they need up to a maximum of ÂŁ100. The app then provides a six-digit code that has to be used within three hours at any NatWest, RBS or Tesco cash machines. This allows customers to leave their wallets at home and just take their phones with them when they go shopping.

APP TURNS CREDIT CARD INTO CUSTOMER CARD Cardify links users' credit cards with its smartphone app, which books the points collected when making a payment that can be exchanged for set bonuses. This makes physical loyalty cards superfluous and allows business operators to decide, based on demographic and financial criteria, which customers are rewarded with which status and discounts. What's more, users are automatically checked in to a shop on their Facebook accounts. This is shown to staff, which enables them to greet customers personally.

HANDPRINT REPLACES BANK CARD The Japanese bank Ogaki Kyoritsu is introducing a cash machine that lets users use biometric data instead of cards to withdraw cash. First, they have to register their biometric data with their bank and be issued a PIN. Cash withdrawals are then made by placing a hand on a scanner and entering their date of birth and PIN. The biometric cash machines will also continue to accept bank cards. The idea behind the machines is to allow customers to make cash withdrawals without a card in the event of natural disasters.

PROJECT FUNDING THROUGH SHOPPING Thanks to the crowdfunding platform "Gynny", project initiators can now raise funding simply through their supporters buying something at one of over 700 partner shops. A percentage of the money is then given to the project. Even though this results in less money per supporter than through conventional funding, it allows charitable projects, which cannot offer shares or something similar in return, to also raise financing.
