editor's note Wow here we are again, no sooner than the first issue was rushed out the door am I sitting down again writing my introduction to our last issue for the year. And what an Issue! This last month has been a flurry of wedding dresses and wedding photographers smothered in a healthy dose of enchanted gardens, feminism and delicacy. And on that note, enchanted gardens, rustic barns and bohemian themed weddings are making an impact in the US and Australia. We are loving the abundance of florals with lush greenery in the bouquets as well as the centerpieces which are creating fantastical, personal and creative weddings. At Trends, We are in the Holiday Spirit. In this issue, we have provided tips for spending the Holidays with your new family as well as how to de-stress from wedding planning. Take time to enjoy the Holidays and take time to enjoy each other. Wishing you all the best! Tershara Matthews Editor-in-Chief

EMERGING DESIGNER
JAYE APPLEWAITE "I love that BLURRY place between dreams and reality ... it's where MAGIC happens!" From Engineer to Bridal Designer, Jaye Applewaite is ripping the runway with light-airy luxurious bridal wear. Using her engineering background, she is able to bring artful precision to her Caribbean designs. In October 2017, she premiered her 1st collection 'Blurred Dreams' at the Knot Couture Show in New York. She was the only Caribbean designer out of the 75 designers showcasing in the show. How would you describe your style? It's refreshing, effortlessly sexy, yet delicate in movement. What inspired the 'Blurred Dreams' Collection? I use inspiration from a lot of things but the island breeze and relaxed pace of the islands inspires me. The collection also tells my story about how miserable I was with being an engineer but I found my true calling in designing dresses. What is your ideal bride? My ideal bride is fashionably confident, relaxed, and refreshingly comfortable with her beauty.
What is up next for Jaye? I will always offer custom designed dresses, but I would also like start a ready to wear, evening wear and bridesmaids collection. As for me personally, I will continue to harvest my skills and learn more about the industry and the opportunities that it can afford. Love is? Love is adventure, learning and growing. It is making lemonade from lemons. Bridal gowns are? Bridal gowns are magic, romance & fantasy. As a bridal designer, I play an important role in making dreams come true for my brides. The World needs? The world needs people to follow their passion and follow their heart. What is your favorite quote? "Follow your heart ... and the MAGIC will follow you!" -Jaye

THIS CHRISTMAS.....
WRITTEN BY: JOCELYN GAVIN-LANE, LCSW, MPH PREMIER PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING SERVICES, LLC
Family Dinner or No family dinner?… That is the question. So, you are newly married and want to spend the holidays with your family but your new spouse expects you to go to their family home. What should you do? Extended family doesn't always understand your new commitment or allegiance to your spouse. It can also make newlyweds feel guilty or feel like they are disappointing relatives, especially when holidays are a significant family tradition. What can you do to make sure 'This Christmas' is special? Most times newlyweds think that holiday splits are just organic and will sort of “happen on their own." Until it doesn’t, and that can be extremely challenging. Here are a few tips that can help you have a 'Holly Jolly Christmas' with the in-laws:
1. Rotate. Tell your family in advance that you will rotate the holidays with your in-laws. Telling them in advance gives them an opportunity to process the information and plan accordingly if need be. Time should be spent equally, so it’s fair to both families. 2. Be open. If this is your first holiday with your in-laws, it is wise to be open to their family traditions. Soon, you will be hosting holidays and can incorporate some of your spouse’s family traditions into your traditions. This will make your in-laws feel that their family is just as important to you as your family. 3. Discuss expectations up front. Before you head out to your spouse’s family home, you should be sure that you discuss family expectations with your spouse. It’s the considerate thing to do. If holidays can sometimes raise tensions in your family, discuss your
exit strategy with your spouse. Leaving before things escalate is always a good thing. 4. Have a sense of humor! At any family gatherings, old stories come up. Have a sense of humor and remember that old stories are fun and display a sense of togetherness for families. Laugh along and don’t get upset. They are just what they are “old stories.” 5. This is teamwork. Focus on the important issues and ignore the small ones. Make decisions together and stick together. Do not allow spouse splitting by your in-laws. It’s important to go into the discussion on the same page. Don’t make changes to the plan unless the changes are agreed upon with your spouse in advance. Happy Holidays!!
