20 January/February 2015
Ohio Wins National Championship!
National Champions! Ohio State Wins First College Football Playoff
Ohio State finished the 2015 season by winning the national championship with a third string quarterback named Cordale Jones. Starting quarterback Braxton Miller got hurt before the season and was replaced by second-string quarterback J.T. Barrett. During the BIG matchup between rival Michigan, Barrett got hurt. Jones took over in the fourth quarter and sealed the win. The next week Jones scored a major upset over Wisconsin 59-0 and the following week with a win over number 1 raked Alabama setting the stage for the big dance in Arlington, TX against Oregon. Behind their bullish backup quarterback and the relentless running of Ezekiel Elliott, the Buckeyes (14-1) completed a remarkable in-season turnaround with a dominating performance against the Ducks (13-2). Even with the benefit of four Ohio State turnovers, the Ducks were held to their lowest point total of the season, four touchdowns below their average coming in. Oregon has done just about everything as it has blossomed into a national power over the last two decades, but it will likely continue the search for its first national championship without Mariota. Barring a major surprise, the junior is likely to turn pro - though he wouldn't talk about his upcoming draft decision after the game. Elliott scored the game's last three touchdowns, finishing off the rout with a 1-yarder with 28 seconds left. While Elliott slipped and darted through the Ducks, Jones pushed them around and shook them off. When Jones surged and spun his way into the end zone with 4:49 left in the second quarter it was 21-7 Ohio State and the O! H! I! O! chant made the dome in North Texas sound like the horseshoe in Columbus. The Ducks were facing their largest deficit of the season. The Ducks would fall to the Buckeyes 42-20. If there was any concern that fans wouldn't travel to the championship game in the new postseason system, the packed house at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, awash in Buckeyes' scarlet and Ducks' yellow, put that to rest. The crowd of 85,689 was as charged as any BCS national championship game.

Q: What is your name? Joshua Dean--A.K.A. “Pope Clown” Q: What city do you reside in? New Orleans, LA Q: How long have you been a fan? I have been a fan of the AFL New Orleans VooDoo since their start in 2004. I wear a mask that I made 15 years ago and wear it to all games, AFL and NFL, concerts and other major events that I attend. Q: Do you attend all the home games? I attend all the games, and have only missed one. Q: Do you travel to all the away games? I attend about 4-5 road trip games and have fellow fans all over the U.S. Q: What does your sports team mean to you? My team means everything to me and I have a tattoo to prove it. Q: What is your community involvement as a superfan? I do a lot behind the scenes to help players get jobs and transportation from place to place. AFL players don’t receive the income that NFL players do. I take it upon myself to help the AFL players so that they will be encouraged to stay, play for the team, and come back each season. I go out of my way to help promote the team by having the community come to my “homegrown” donut shop called Sweet Things and Grill “Nola made and raised,” to meet the players and cheerleaders up close and personal. Q: What does this sports team mean to you? It means everything to me. It is who I am. On the day I was fired from a job, I went home feeling sorry for myself after being told I would never amount to anything. I turned on the TV and heard the sports announcers talk about how horrible the Clippers were and that they would never amount to anything. I said on that day, this is going to be my team, we are going to “ride or die” together. I live; I breathe and drive the L.A. Clippers, literally. “BUCO PAT”
TEAM: TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Q: What is your name? Patrick Dotson--A.K.A. “Buco Pat” Q: What city do you reside in? Tampa, FL Q: How long have you been a fan of the Buccaneers? I have been a fan since I was a baby. I have a picture of myself wearing a Buco Bruceo cap at six months old. Q: Do you attend all their home games? Yes. Q: Do you travel to all their away games? I go to as many as possible. Q: What does this sports team mean to you? I have been an employee at the stadium since I was sixteen. Being at the stadium with the fans, and cheering on the team, means a lot to me. Because I am a native, I have been through all the bad times with my team, celebrated with them during the playoffs, and winning of the Super Bowl, so it’s very much a part of my life. I will pass my fandom down to my newborn daughter, and she will be as big of a “superfan” as I am. I am looking forward to Head Coach Lovie Smith using his learning experiences from Coach Dungy to take the team further and be successful again. Win or lose…I will be there cheering them on and supporting every effort. The Buccanneers mean everything to me!!! Q: What is your community involvement as a superfan? I participate in charity events around the city. It’s very rewarding. Contact Info: buco_pat@yahoo.com

Hailey Zeller
Tampa Bay Buccaneers SuperFan and the Face of the “Fans Against Child Abuse” Campaign
“I
have always been a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, and I will be a Bucs fan until the day I die,” says eight year old superfan Hailey Zeller. The Zeller family have supported the Buccaneers since the franchise began in 1976, and little Hailey has been a football fan since she was brought home from the hospital wearing a onesie with a caption that read “Daddy’s Littlest Bucs Fan.” Her parents would always take her, and her older brother Austin, to the Buccaneers home games. But Hailey’s superfan status didn’t come about until she met Keith “Big Nasty” Kunzig at a season ticket holder event at the age of six. Hailey remembers “Big Nasty” asking about her summer activities, and she replied “it was ok after my surgeries.” Hailey was born with a hole between the two upper chambers of her heart, and even though doctors assured her parents that it would close as she got older, it didn't close as quickly as they anticipated. In prepping for the heart surgery, doctors also found that Hailey needed three other surgeries to clear her nasal passages so she could receive anesthesia for the five hour operation. Two weeks after Hailey was released from the hospital, she met face to face with “Big Nasty” telling him about her ordeal. Touched by her story, “Big Nasty,” and his daughter Destiny, gave Hailey the horned hat that she so proudly wears as part of her self-made costumes.
The Zeller family are members of the “What the Buc” tailgate team, and the “What the Buc Really Matters” Foundation. The tailgate team sponsors meet & greet events the night before each home game with fans of the opposing teams, which establishes camaraderie and offers fantastic networking opportunities among the fans. The foundation provides game tickets to children suffering from cancer, toys for tots, and many other good deeds. Hailey is involved in supporting a number of non-profit organizations to help children and her community. She is the face of the “Fans Against Child Abuse” campaign, which is dedicated to sounding the alarm and raising awareness about ways to prevent assaults on children, and uses familiar superfan faces to drive the campaign. Hailey also volunteers with the Tampa based children’s cancer foundation, One Voice. She helps to feed the homeless, and she distributes beads and other gifts to children who are less fortunate. “It makes my day to see others smile because of me helping them” says Hailey, “and I like meeting people and making new friends. It’s great to be a sports fan. But it’s even greater to receive gratitude for serving in the community.”
For Hailey, being recognized in FanSetters Sports Magazine isn’t about getting the publicity. It’s about showing other fans that they can be heard, and at any Hailey has met several Buccaneers superstars includ- age. “THUNDOR”
TEAM: OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
Q: What is your name? Garrett Haviland a.k.a. “Thundor” Q: What city do you currently reside? Oklahoma City, OK Q: How long have you been a fan of this team? I have been a super fan since day one. I was a broke college kid when the Hornets were temporarily housed in OKC, and that really built a foundation for appreciation of NBA action. I got opening night tickets to Thunder basketball and by the end of the first month I developed an alter ego while attending an ultimate fan competition and that turned me into a die-hard fan. Q: Are you a season ticket holder? Yes Q: Do you attend Thunder’s away games? Yes Q: What does this sports team mean to you? Growing up, and through most of my adult life, there were no major sports teams to cheer for in Oklahoma. When the Hornets came to town, followed by the Thunder, I was all in on professional basketball. I grew up collecting trading cards just wishing to one day see a live sporting event, and now I am a part of some of the Nation’s proudest sports fans. I attend every home game, and I am the loudest fan in the arena. Q: How Do People React to You When You Wear Your SuperFan Attire? People respond very well to me being a superfan. I have signed hundreds of autographs and have been in thousands of photos. I often get tagged in strangers’ social media pics. It is an interesting and unexpected turn of events for a lifelong sports fan. I always dreamed of being on ESPN. But when my tubby physique kept me from making it athletically, I managed to make it with my intriguing character complete with a painted belly! Q: Do you volunteer to help in the community? I work as an Assistant Director of a non-profit organization called The Genesis Project. Genesis is a group home for boys ages 6-12. The youth have experienced severe trauma, and we work with them to overcome their traumatic past, to prepare for a successful future by way of adoption, foster care, or reunification. I attend several events yearly as Thundor. I donate my time for birthday parties, holiday themed parties, charity golf tournaments, and recently attended a wedding as requested by the bride and groom who were both Thunder fans.

Competition S elf I by Camela Douglass, M.S. ED, C.P.T.
t's no secret: we live in a competitive society. It's either you against me or me against the world. We all have been competitive at some point of our lives. Since I can remember, I've either been in competition with someone or have been compared to another individual. From academics to athletics, there is always someone to compete with and to beat. The concept of winning and being number one starts at an early age. Whether you were racing a sibling home from school, running for the base in freeze tag, trying to make a sports team, or vying for a starter position, competition has always existed and directed our drive. Being competitive is a great trait to have, but at what point does it become unrealistic? Unfortunately, as we get older, competition gets worse. It continues to escalate because there is more at stake. It is no longer about obtaining bragging rights. It's about receiving scholarships, breaking records, taking home trophies, bigger contracts and bonuses, or becoming the next MVP.
I hate to bust society's competition bubble, but competing with others is overrated! Let it be known that you are your biggest competition! When it all boils down to it, who can do a better job at being you than you? The man in the mirror is the one you should compete with. The ultimate goal is to be better, grow stronger, get healthier, and become a better you! As a personal trainer, I constantly consult with potential clients who want Michelle Obama arms or a Kim Khardashian bottom. They want to look better than their ex's new girlfriend or they want to win the biggest loser competition at work. My immediate advice to them is simple: spend less time comparing yourself to others and more time competing against yourself. You are truly only as good as your last success. Your next goal: beat YOU and become the best you that you can be. "Never let it rest, until your good is your better and your better is your best!" 44 January/February 2015

“Crusader Raider” KEITH SMITH SuperFan and Philanthropist Helping To Make The World A Better Place For Everyone!!!
Superfan Keith Smith, of London, England, can definitely confirm his passionate and eternal love for both helping children, and supporting his favorite sports team. FanSetters® Sports Magazine sat down with Smith at the “What A Fan” sports fan conference in Orlando, Florida, to talk with him about his loyal fan status to the Oakland Raiders, and his work as a philanthropist. Since 1980 Smith has been a dedicated fan of the Oakland Raiders, which he shares in common with many people globally. His enthusiasm for the team came about while visiting his family in California. It was evident to Smith that the Raiders were mistaken, and the background behind the team was under-rated. Seven years later, he became a SUPERFAN, and “Crusader Raider,” representative of the worldwide “Raider Nation” evolved. Although the Raiders’ team colors are black and wanted 46 silver, JanuarySmith /February 2015 to be different.
He wanted to represent both the team, and his country. “I’m the only person in the Oakland Coliseum who wears a “red and white” raider costume,” he says, “and I am respected by the Raider Nation because red and white are the colors of England.” Crusader Raider made his 63rd visit to the United States for the What A Fan sports fan conference, and has visited over half of the stadiums in the US, and traveled to Spain, Germany, and other countries to attend games to collectively support all football comrades. The “What A Fan” sports fan conference offered the ability to meet and bond with other fans from all over the world, and the opportunity to support each other, and support the safety of children through the “Fans Against Child Abuse” campaign.
Despite having ten losing seasons, the Raider Nation all stand strong together, whether at games, or just helping one another in general. “It’s about how you come together and make a difference,” says Smith. “We have the biggest fan base in the world, and the friendliest,” he proudly states. “If you ever need help, a Raider Nation fan will help you.” Keith Smith is a family man, and a philanthropist in both the United Kingdom, and the United States. He has been married for eleven years, and has one son and two daughters. But his work and love for children doesn’t stop at home. He is an advocate for protecting children from being victims of child abuse, and he has built his career working full-time with children suffering from Autism, and adults with learning disabilities. “If I can make a change by educating people about autism, and learning disabilities, it will be a better world for all of us,” states Smith. His foundation, Sycamore Trust, aids autistic children and families in East London. Through his establishment, Smith has connected with over 400 families, supporting them so that the children of their families have resources to healthcare, educational programs, and the ability for their kids to be fully included for life development to carry them from childhood through adulthood. In the 1980’s, Smith worked in the United States opening summer camp programs for disabled children. His goal was to educate people about physical and learning disabilities that affect others, provide programs to allow more accessibility for disabled children, and to teach the public how to help others in need. Smith is also a proud member of the 66 MOB -“Make Oakland Better.
”This organization raises awareness of autism for charities of East London, adults suffering from drug abuse, the homeless, the Ronald McDonald House, and many other programs. There is so much negativity in the world that can separate people, but we can bond and unit through sports. Coming together as friends is a number one priority, and how we come together is very important. “FanSetters® Sports Magazine is an opportunity for fans to learn about other fans who, perhaps, wouldn’t otherwise meet each other,” offers Smith. “This magazine is only as good as the people who make contributions to it. Superfans do lots of work behind the scenes for their teams, and I want to learn about what the Vikings fan does, what the Bucs fan does, what the Ravens fan does, and others across the world. So share your stories, your successes, your philanthropic acts, and all that you do to make the world a better place with FanSetters® Magazine. It’s your voice.” Smith demonstrates clear dedication, strength and courage by standing for what he believes in, and he maintains a passion for everything he indulges himself in, whether it’s being a Crusader Raider, or an activist for children. Superfans can make a difference. Regardless of your age, religion, race, sexual orientation, or geographic location, we can all come together in communities to make the world a better place for everyone. And Keith Smith exemplifies the true meaning of a SUPERFAN, not only in football, but in humanity as well. daggersmith@ntlworld.com Facebook: Keith Smith Crusader Raider
