PUBLISHER’S NOTES

I

Willie Stewart CEO / PUBLISHER

n February 2007, we launched our first magazine issue of Trendsetters to Trendsetters in Atlanta. I chose Atlanta because it attracts a lot of national attention. I wanted to create a positive and informative national publication that would spotlight the movers and shakers around the country. At that time, I didn’t know anyone of significant stature to put on the cover so I drafted the skyline of Atlanta as the first cover. It was a news magazine, 12x14 with a newspaper look. From February 2007 through May 2008, we remained a visually appealing news magazine. Although that wasn’t quite the vision I had in mind for creating a national magazine, it was a great start. In June 2008, we transformed the publication from the newspaper look into an 8x11 glossy magazine. Today, it still remains as a glossy magazine that is filled with positive and engaging information. We have built a strong reputation for informing and educating tens of thousands of readers across the world through our ever increasing Internet presence. The start of the New Year brings on a slight change. We, as a team, have to execute a strong plan to stay in business in a declining economy. Our publication is free, so we survive on advertisement dollars. With businesses closing and major companies cutting advertising budgets, it’s been a tough road. We have to continue branding and making a name for ourselves through social network marketing and public network events. In addition, we must continue to supply great information to generate more readers, which will satisfy potential corporate advertisement support. Five years ago, I was told that my idea wouldn’t work. However, I have learned that when you fight hard at protecting what you believe in, you will prove your critics wrong. Thanks to all my staff and readers for making this vision possible. I look forward to another successful year of keeping you entertained and informed with articles that are relevant in our community, so America, HERE WE GO AGAIN! ■

In 1988, Xernona Clayton was appointed Corporate Vice President for Urban Affairs with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. As a corporate executive, Ms. Clayton was one of the highest-ranking female employees in Turner Broadcasting System. Xernona moved to Atlanta in 1965 where she accepted a position with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and worked closely with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ms. Clayton also traveled extensively with Mrs. Coretta Scott King on her nationwide concert tours. Dedicated to promoting racial understanding, Xernona Clayton has been a leader in civic projects and civil rights activities for several years. This project served as a model and a pilot for other states throughout the country and received national honor from the National Medical Association for its impact. Her persistent fight against the dragons of prejudice and bigotry was never more apparent than in 1968, when the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan denounced the Klan and credited Xernona’s influence with his change. Ms. Clayton’s dedication to the community is reflected in the many hours she spends promoting human relations through bi-racial groups devoted to improving racial understanding. Adrian Kali Turner A TRIPLE THREAT

K

nown as a “child of the universe” by friends and family, Adrian Kali Turner is a triple threat who has proven that small town fame can turn into big-screen dreams. Known for his acting, singing, dancing, writing, and entrepreneurial skills, Adrian is taking the spotlight whether he’s in front of a camera or behind a microphone and doesn’t plan on leaving center stage any time soon. Currently a member of both the SAG and AFTRA unions, Adrian became an award-winning actor at the young age of just nine years old. He won top recognition for Monologue and Commercial competitions at the AMTC in Orlando, Florida and qualified as a finalist for the Best Overall Child Actor award. Immediately after leaving AMTC, Adrian left the East Coast and headed West for the City of Angels. He has since showcased his extraordinary talents on numerous television shows including Nickelodeon’s “iCarly,” ABC’s “Flash Forward,” CBS’s “Numb3rs,” and NBC’s “Chuck,” as well as in movies such as the Hollywood/Bollywood blockbuster, MY NAME IS KHAN. Up next, Adrian will play Jeremy in the highly anticipated series “Apartment 23” on ABC staring James Van Der Beek and Krysten Ritter. DARIEN MCDOWELL Asbestos work is a great employment alternative for youths By Zakiyyah Raheem, PhD

D

arien McDowell is a contributing Writer for Trendsetters to Trendsetters Magazine. He is presently an Asbestos Supervisor for Regional Local 207 Union, which was co-founded in 1991 in Columbus, Ohio by Darien and a few other disgruntled workers. Darien is presently enrolled as a student at Clark State College in SpringfieldDayton, Ohio; he has long term plans of continuing on with his education to obtain an MBA. In 1984, Darien began work as an asbestos inspector while having membership through Local 8 Union and on to becoming an Insulator Apprentice for more than four years. By year 2002, Darien had been charged with a felony and served three years; he was released in 2006. Now, as an ex-felon, Darien was able to re-enter the workforce as an asbestos worker and rejoin the same union that he cofounded. After returning to the workforce, at some point he lost his seniority as a union member when he left his work as an asbestos worker for a Contractor’s job; he returned to work in 2009 and joined another union-based company from Cincinnati, Ohio and worked there until he became an Asbestos Supervisor with the Union that he cofounded. This year Regional Local 207 celebrates its 20th year anniversary as a union for asbestos workers.

Darien states that there are several advantages to working with asbestos, the field of work is open to anyone, including ex-felons, and the jobs are protected through the unions, therefore employment is more secure. As a union member, one can acquire seniority and run for leadership positions within the union. As a contributing writer for Trendsetters to T r endset t er s Magazine, Darien, will write articles directed towards young people who are having problems finding stable employment. He wants them to know that Asbestos work is a great employment alternative and jobs of this nature are protected by unions. Though union members are required to pay union dues, as a member of the asbestos union, workers can participate in training classes to qualify for job advancement, etc. Workers are required to have a drivers’ license. Second, he will write articles on the need for union workers in asbestos to learn how to budget. If one is laid off for some reason such as a strike, the worker can sustain themselves while getting unemployment benefits. Third, he wants to share his own personal experience and how he advanced in the asbestos field; how he advanced to a supervisory position in the union. Darien also ran for leadership role on the e-Board and lost by a single vote. Darien’s ultimate goal in the union is to run for President of Regional Local 207 in Springfield-Dayton, Ohio. EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT

CRYSTAL CELESTINE SHEPHERD A WOMAN ON A MISSION

C

By Cheryl Lynn Iszard

rystal Celestine Shepherd, President of Brown Mackie College in Atlanta, Georgia is also a mother, a wife, a goal setter, a woman who is on a mission. With her feet planted firmly on the ground, she knows where she is headed and there is no stopping her. This powerful African American woman has proven with hard work, dedication, and determination anything is achievable. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Crystal is the middle daughter of three children from the union of Cornelious and Carolyn Celestine. Crystal’s parents were high school sweethearts, married in 1972 at the tender age of 16 and remained married until the passing of her mother in 2002. With the Louisiana school system not being up to the expectations of her parents, and their seeing her potential, her parents both worked diligently in order for Crystal to attend a private school. Crystal’s zest for learning was not just for knowledge but for what a higher education would afford her. With aspirations of becoming a nurse she enrolled in Dillard University only to see her focus quickly change; instead she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Social Welfare. Crystal had a “by the time I’m thirty list” which kept her focused, striving toward her goals. In fact, because of her focus she was able to achieve all of her goals just before turning thirty which included making a six-figure income, owning her own home, and obtaining her MBA from the University of Phoenix. Crystal is currently 36 years old and also has a “before I am forty list” which includes obtaining her Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Argosy University in Atlanta, GA which she hopes to obtain in the very near future. When Crystal decided to go back to school, it was not just her decision but a family agreed upon decision. Each member of the family was brought into the loop to discuss how Crystal was going to not only achieve this goal, but how she was going to do her research, ace every test, still maintain balance in the home and be successful as a family, which was a number one priority. Her children understand the goals of mom and Crystal says if she has not given her children anything else, she has given them a work ethic; nothing is going to be handed to them in this world. They will have to work for everything that they want. “You have to work and balance life in the process. That’s how life is . . .” Crystal feels that coming to Brown Mackie College was nothing short of “divine intervention”. While she was in school she started her professional career in the hotel industry where she worked her way quickly through the ranks; the last four years before coming to the education industry she worked with Wyndham International, a five-hundred room five star hotel, as the front desk manager and eventually a Director of Room Operation at the age of 28. Crystal says what sets Brown Mackie College apart from

other schools of higher education is the smaller class sizes, the environment is friendly and family oriented and maintains an open door policy for all students. Although their college is small, students come to Brown Mackie to find a career and change their lives. “Just like Katrina, one day your storm may come; you must be prepared. Don’t let Brown Mackie be the stopping point of your education” is her message to the students. “You must be your own professional representative, people are watching so always dress appropriate”. Crystal states her focus with Brown Mackie is two-fold; one is to increase enrollment and two to ensure that her students get their careers going. “I love being a part of changing the lives of the students of Brown Mackie. I am very proud of the fact our accrediting body holds us accountable to ensure that 65% of the graduates of Brown Mackie College are placed in their field of study and working. I welcome anyone to check us out and meet some of the absolutely fabulous people working here”. I asked Crystal if she thinks the educators in Atlanta are doing a good job, her reply was, “yes, I believe the educators in Atlanta are doing what they are suppose to do; it is all about the students, their attitude and what they take from their learning experience”. When asked her thoughts with regards to the recent CRCT testing scandals, which rocked the Atlanta school system, Crystal states “it’s difficult to pull something of that nature off without many people having some knowledge of it. I believe the main focus during testing was lost in the transition; the focus of ensuring the children come to school and get the proper education was lost. It’s unfair to promote our youth to the next level if they have not acquired the foundation they need to succeed”. Crystal Shepherd is the proud wife of Jason Shepherd and mother of four, three daughters and one son (Celeste – 13, Chelby – 12 Camille – 3 and Jason II – one year old). When asked how she is able to balance being a wife, a mother of four, a business woman, a college President, and attending school to obtain her PHD, Crystal’s response was, “ because her home is ran a bit like the military, a well oiled machine” and that she has an awesome support system. Her husband Jason is a” Godsend”, a huge support of her goals, and he is also an awesome cook. Along with her many other responsibilities Crystal is a member of the Atlanta Business League, the Urban League, the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce, and the National Council of Negro Women where she is extremely excited about being invited to be the keynote speaker of the National Council of Negro Woman’s 55th Annual Founder’s Luncheon (Detroit, Michigan). Crystal Shepherd was selected by the Trumpet Foundation, the presenters of the Trumpet Awards, to receive the 2012 High Tea With High Heals Award; this award will be presented to her during the 20th anniversary of the Trumpet awards January 2012. Crystal will also be featured in the upcoming publication of Who’s Who in Black Atlanta, and states what a huge honor it will be. Crystal Shepherd is truly a Trendsetter in motion!■

Keep Your Cool During the Cold Season

t’s that time of year again when everything gets cooler. The sweaters, scarves and mittens come on, and the hot chocolate comes out. For those living in northern cities, the snow comes out too. Not everyone enjoys the winter season, because it is also the season where people often catch colds. Colds seem to be a universal condition, possibly because they are easily transmitted at workplaces, schools and homes by contact with the hands and the mouth. It is a rare person who goes through life without ever catching a cold. Colds are primarily caused by viruses, not by cold weather itself. Since there is no cure for the actual cold virus, cold sufferers rely on methods that only treat the outward symptoms of a cold, such as a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat or coughing. People try chicken soup, vitamin C supplements, over-thecounter medications, inhaling steam and several other remedies to cure a cold, all with varying levels of success. All cold sufferers would agree that prevention is the best medicine. Following these precautions all year long can lessen your risk of catching a cold or a similar virus, and allow you and your family to enjoy the best of the winter season:

Getting enough sleep and eating foods high in vitamin C will keep your body’s immune system strong. • Avoid close contact with someone who already has a cold. • If possible, wash your hands and dishes with disposable paper towels instead of cloth towels or sponges. ■

By Dr. Linda Amerson

T

here are currently over 80 million Americans affected with some form of alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, or scalp disorder condition. The first step a consumer should take is to contact a doctor of trichology for a consultation. Who is a doctor of trichology, you may ask? A doctor of trichology is a specialist in anaylizing alopecia and scalp conditions and effectively treating these disorders. There are not very many doctors of trichology worldwide, however, this field is growing. Some of the scalp conditions a doctor of trichology treats includes: alopecia areata, excessive hair breakage, dry hair and scalp, oily hair and scalp, an excessively itchy scalp, five scaly scalp disorders, banded alopecia, marginal alopecia, folliculitis, follicullitis kelioditis, sodium accumulation, ponytail alopecia, poor scalp circulation, traction alopecia, trichotillomania, post pardum alopecia, and many other disorders. In addition, a doctor of trichology administers a very in-

depth analysis of theclient. A microscopic analysis is also included of the facial skin, scalp and hair shaft, and the client is able to view this analysis as it is being explained on the television monitor. Thirdly, diet, lifestyles, occupations, hair care practices, medical history, etc., are also vital in making an accurate accessment of the disorder, and for treatment recommendations to be given. Some consumers try to self-diagnose themselves and selftreat, without the correct knowledge of their condition. You can make your condition more severe if you do not first have an analysis from a doctor of trichology. Furthermore, the longer you wait for an analysis, the more severe your condition may become. Without a doubt, ther are some scalp disorders that are more common in certain ethnic groups than others. A doctor of trichology is knowledgeable in distinguishing these factors. I recommend using Dr. Amerson's Therapeutic Essentials, LLC to keep your hair and scalp healthy. In conslusion, contact Dr. Linda Amerson of L.A's Hair & Scalp Clinic to schedule a consultation appointment - (817) 265-8854 and visit our website www.hairandscalpessentials.com â–

BUSINESS TRENDS SPOTLIGHT

fter the Civil War many slaves, now “freed” men and women, decided to stay on the plantations and work. They felt they were actually better off than when they were enslaved. Now they were able to stay together as a family, not be split up and sold, and were paid (a share of the crop) for the work they had been doing for years without pay, thus the term “sharecroppers”. President and CEO of the Atlanta Business League (ABL) Leona Barr-Davenport was in fact a sharecropper. As she put it, “I came from humble, humble beginnings . . . I use to always say that my parents were sharecroppers and then I realized, if they were sharecroppers then that means that I was one too. While sharecropping came with an agreement one had with the owners, they really were entrepreneurs, but I didn’t think of it along those lines until I started focusing on what a business owner was, what they did and how they did it”. Leona’s mother taught her to take what you have and make something of it . . . Leona used this to lay a foundation that is unshakeable. A native of Johnsonville, South Carolina, born in 1957, Leona has no doubt found her place and made her mark in Atlanta after receiving her B.S. Degree in Business Administration & Economics from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina and moving to Georgia in 1979. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from Clark Atlanta University and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Introduced to Atlanta during the civil rights era, her eyes became more open to the inadequacies between blacks and whites from being exposed to people such as Andrew Young, Maynard Jackson, and Julian Bond. In the early 80’s Leona worked with a company who asked her to represent them with the Atlanta Business League, which exposed her to black business owners. She began to gain a great deal of respect for black business owners because of their passion, discipline, and self-sufficiency.... and for being kicked down on a daily basis while trying to do business in an arena where there were a number of companies and people who did not care about whether they were successful. On November 1, 1988, because of the passion for minority businesses Ed Menifee, then President of Atlanta Business League, showed, Leona stopped volunteering and began working for ABL. She became President of ABL in December 1997. (Ed Menifee is still involved with the organization today which started in 1933 and has withstood the test of time through the years including the civil rights movement.) As President of the Atlanta Business League, Atlanta’s oldest minority business development and advocacy organization, Leona works with the board of directors to provide increased access to business opportunities for minorities with specific emphasis on the development of businesses owned and operated by African-Americans. When asked her thoughts about economic development initiatives such as the Atlanta Belt-Line Project and where the ABL fits into the picture, Leona’s response was, “What we do is work with various entities to make sure that our members are kept 24

aware of business opportunities. This is a twenty year project and someone is going to do the work; the Atlanta Business League and black business owners want some of the work”. When asked about some of the challenges she has seen as an organization leader, Leona finds that funding is much different. She feels the battle is more difficult than ever. Black business owners paved the way for other minorities and made it better for them to walk into business opportunities. However, now-a-days there has been a change in the funding as well as contracting. It is not that the dollars aren’t there; the marketplace is saturated with organizations making requests from the same pool of money, which makes it harder to get funding today. ABL is not an automatic source of investment. There are those who do not necessarily believe that there needs to be an Atlanta Business League that focuses strictly on African-American business. The deck was shuffled and the rules were changed. When it comes to getting corporate and government business, Blacks have to be certified to prove they are black; someone has to say, “Oh that’s a black person”. I was impressed with the fact that ABL empowers our youth to be entrepreneurs, which sets the ground work for their future. The youth are being totally immersed into the business world from Monday trainings to discuss resume building and public speaking, to shadowing a business owner for eight weeks, and getting an idea of what it takes to be a business owner. They are linked with a senior employee, African American, so they can see themselves doing the same type of work. ABL membership is comprised of home based businesses with one employee to businesses as large as 200 to 300 employees. The organization works with various entities to make sure that the members are made aware of the opportunities that exist in Atlanta for entrepreneurs. When looking at the numerous awards and recognitions, Leona is humbled and proud to say the one accolade that stands out for her more than any is “The History Makers” organization which interviewed her in April of 2010 for its archives. The majority of the history makers have been over sixty years old. It made her stop and take notice of her family history, some of the experiences she went through as a younger person and realized how some of those experiences have guided her footsteps as she walked through this world. When asked what she wants our readers to know about her. Leona responded, “It is very simple, I am committed, committed to the cause; I believe in what I am doing, I believe in the people I am doing the work for (African-American Entrepreneurs); and I believe in the importance of ABL. Economically, we can’t exist without small business owners and we can’t exist without African American business owners. We need both; when it comes to employment, an African American business owner is more likely to hire another African American”. The Atlanta Business League is an organization that has been very good to her and she has been very good to ABL. Through the ABL she can touch people at almost any level. It has been a good marriage for her and if she had it to do all over, she would do it again. It became evident through my interview with Leona that she does not take anything for granted! She was taught that every day you must have a purpose; therefore this “Trendsetter” has no room or patience for excuses. ■

STEEL STANDING The Bennie Heard, Jr. Story By Zakiyyah Raheem, PH.D.

S

teel Standing is about a former rising super star in professional boxing, who received two of Georgia’s highest honors presented by the Georgia State Legislature, House of Representatives in 1982 for all of his achievements in boxing and was nominated and received an Award as Comeback Boxer of the Year by Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Though, he won two gold medals in the 1984 US Olympic Trials for Boxing and had turned pro; he found himself embroiled in the fight of his life in 1985, when he was charged with first degree murder in the death of a close friend, while home on a two month medical leave from boxing training. The incident happened at a local cafe in Bennie’s home town of Elberton, GA during a game of cards and he was subsequently charged with shooting and killing one of his closest friends. Though, he ran down the street from the café to report the accidental shooting and to get help, he was detained and held for questioning. He was arrested, tried, and convicted in the small town of Elberton, GA, approximately forty-six (46) days after his arrest on December 20, 1985. The jury of 11 whites and one elderly black woman deliberated for less than 13 minutes before finding him guilty of the charge; he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The controversial charge and sentence led to national protests and calls to free Bennie. Bennie served 20+ years before being released in 2006. Upon being released, Bennie was besieged by a throng of journalists from around the country, which included the New York Times, who did a Special on him in June 2007. He is now on parole and waiting to have his case reviewed. ■

In hopes of: Perfecting Young Black Love 22 Ways to Please Your Man, is a relationship

I

By Apri Hana

t's for the Woman who has the Man and wants a more fulfilling relationship with him. It's also for the Woman who "had" the Man and wants to know why she doesn't anymore (and it doesn't matter who broke up with who?) And it's totally for the girl in all of us women, who have a deep desire to understand her feelings towards her Man, and want to relate better with ALL of them. Feelings help express bonds and connections that individuals allow themselves to have and co-exist in. Relationships are just reflections of those connections and bonds. I've comprised and written an insightful and enlightened perspective for women everywhere of all creeds and cultures; of how choosing to understand men will not only bring about change in how you accept them, but it will also help him to accept you. Thus the differences that make us opposites. In this novelistic slash, "relationshipy" self help book. I wanted to have some fun with it so I named my chapters Pleasure Principles. Hence the subtitle - 22 Ways to Please your Man! As str ong, Young Black women - I believe alot of us set our black men up to fail in most cases. We go in expecting things from them that we knew they didn't have to begin with and just hope that they're gonna change at somepoint? And therein lies the set up. Most men have no desire to change most things about themselves; and if he does it will only be because you inspired him to, and not because you told him to. Several principles I believe in and share, you will find has much more relevance than that of "just" an intimate relationship. You can take alot of this infornation and smear it all across the mirrors of your lives! Let your pen be like a tube of lipstick and matte it out or gloss it up as you so choose! INSPIRATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

Reverend Timothy J. Chambers By Carol Courtney Anglin

Third Pastor elected in 102 year history

R

everend Timothy J. Chambers has been elected to take over the historic Truelight Baptist Church in East St. Louis, Illinois, beginning January 15, 2012. He is the third Pastor to lead the congregation in its 102-year history. “There have only been two previous pastors,” says Reverend Chambers, “the latter being my lifelong mentor, the Reverend Henry Nicholson.” When asked why he thought he was chosen, he laughed and said “Well you would probably have to ask them that question.” However, Reverend Chambers explained, “I’m a lifelong member of the church. I attended the church as a child and then went off to the military and served for 10 years, but as soon as I returned home, back to the church I went and jumped right back into the ministry, particularly working with the youth. I understand the Truelight family. I am part of its history. I guess I was just a perfect fit.” And a perfect fit he is. His formal education includes a degree from Central Christian University in North Carolina, with a major in Christian Education and a minor in Theology. Although he is formally trained to preach, he attributes his greatest preparation to the hands-ontraining he received growing up. “Working as superintendent of the Sunday school, helping as a youth leader, and sitting at the feet of my former Pastor is what prepared me,” says Reverend Chambers. “Reverend Henry Nicholson taught me what the role of a pastor really means. I learned things from him that I really don’t think I could have learned anywhere else. Sometimes you don’t know what you are being groomed for until it’s here.” Pastor Chambers says that his wife, Danielle, the new first lady is “humbly excited,” but he’s aware that she can’t fully understand the role until she starts to operate in it. “There’s a tremendous expectation put on the role of a First Lady of the Church. She’s also a new mom with our first child, Landri Nicole, born on 11/11/2011 at 11:11am,” stated the proud father. “It is a lot on my wife at one time, but she’s ready and extremely supportive of her husband. Seriously, she’s my ulti-

mate confidant.” The Reverend also has a son from a previous relationship, Timothy James Jr., who has followed in his father’s footsteps to the military and is married with a family of his own. The new pastor discussed his plans to bring about positive changes in the church. “I have a vision to bring a new sense of life not only to the church and its surrounding neighborhood,” shared Reverend Chambers, “but the plans include concentrating on seniors, young adults, and the youth while serving the needs of the entire body. I believe they should all feed off one another.” In addition, he has plans to conduct musical theatre programs and events, but he doesn’t feel the need to make all the decisions alone. Due to his belief that, “in order to be successful with the people you have to listen to the people you are sent to serve,” he plans to survey the congregation and ask for feedback on a consistent basis. Further, he feels led to focus on Sunday school and the interactive Bible study as key elements. Reverend Chambers says, “I want my congregation to know what I am talking about when I preach. I want them to know the criteria of scripture and have a sure foundation. It’s important for them to know things like time periods and to understand the scriptures’ depth.” The Bible says to study to show thyself a workman that need not be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth. According to the Reverend, “The only way to really know and understand is to study, and not just on Sunday. Sunday we come together to have dessert, celebrate and worship, during the week we are going to feast.” ■

nvy is truly a characteristic that assassinates your position in the Kingdom of God. While most terrorist attacks are birthed in the mind, envy is birthed in the heart, spreads like a venomous poison, and spews thoughts to the mind and out of the mouth, eating the woman, from the inside out. Scripture proof exist of this statement as Proverbs 14:30 describes, A sound heart [is] the life of the flesh: but envy, the rottenness of the bones. KJV. Like a cancer envy is hidden in the marrow of the body working its way to the outside. If you look closely you can see the envy in the eyes of its beholder. Glancing sideways for no reason at all. Refusing to speak as envy has closed off kindness and over powered the heart. The envious probably cannot identify the root of their desire, they seek to behold or destroy what you have. Peninah had 10 sons for Eli. Surely Peninah was seen as a worthy wife who carried and produced offspring for her husband. However, what she sought was a love they way Eli loved Hannah. Peninah used her contribution to the Kingdom of God, to fret, terrorize, worry, afflict, and tease Hannah. Forever reminding Hannah and their husband, of the position she held as the child bearer. Today we would ask Peninah to stay in her lane! Your Kingdom has a purpose. Do not utilize your gift from God to fight against what God is birthing in others lives! The world has created the modern day term for envy-The Hater. The Hater possess a specific skill set. The Hater is observant of the clothes you wear, the style of your hair, even the shade of your lipstick. The hater watches your movements and listens to your conservations and conversations about you, attempting to design the reasons why you are not good enough. All the while

seeking to possess your gift for themselves. Possession takes place by the assassination of character and polluting the atmosphere concerning your gift from God. They whisper with their tongues and attempt to lie down and conceive with your gift! Hoping to bring birth to your talent! Sounds evil? It is! Yet, if we look closely at Peninah’s attempts to kidnap the love Hannah received, we will discover that Peninah’s envy pushed Hannah so close to God that he opened her womb and birthed His prophet! Hannah went thru, she cried herself to sleep and refused to eat but that motivated her to seek the King! If we read the word it says that the Envious cannot enter into The Kingdom of Heaven. Why, because a house divided cannot stand in The Everyday Woman. ■

Meet Roger Bobb,

A Man On By Carol Courtney Anglin

R

Introducing BobbCat Film Company

oger Bobb was the supervising producer and executive vice president for Tyler Perry studios. While there he directed, produced and contributed to all eleven Tyler Perry films, including Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which grossed over 100 million dollars in theatrical and DVD sales to date. He was also responsible for hiring mother and daughter, Chip and Kim Fields together, and producing 462 episodes of TBS shows such as “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne,” which were ranked among television’s Top 5 primetime sitcoms. Bobb won five NAACP Image Awards: four for producing the House of Payne and one for the film, For Colored Girls. Adding to his accomplishments as a leader and trailblazer in the industry, he received the Visionary Award by the Caribbean Heritage Organization of Hollywood in 2011. For the last seven years, Bobb was in a position to lend his expertise and, at the same time, absorb the knowledge that Perry had to offer, but change is the only constant in life, so there are no hard feelings. When asked about the current status of his relationship with Perry, Bobb simply stated, “It’s great! It’s because of Tyler I am where I am today.” Bobb, who was born in London and raised in Brooklyn, now lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up around the time Spike Lee was beginning to emerge on the scene in the film industry, and credits Lee as one of his influences. “When I saw Spike’s She’s Gotta Have It, I was fascinated. Even more so, when I realized that the person who produced the movie, not only looked like me but also lived just blocks away,” explained Bobb. “I then watched him as he took the time to write books and conduct industry seminars, and it just blew me away.” Eventually, Bobb’s interest led him to The Directors Guild of America’s Assistant Directors Training Program. “It’s an extremely tedious process with several exams and evaluations, and five thousand people trying to get into a remarkably small window” he stated. However, with his determination and persistence, Bobb was one of the fortunate few who was accepted into the prestigious and competitive program. 44

The Move Ever since he was a child, he had a keen interest in movies. “My brother, Gordon, and I would go around reciting lines from movies, never knowing how it would transpire to our adulthood,” recalls Bobb, “but here we are. He is one of the most successful lawyers in the entertainment business and I am where I am.” Although he has worked for years in the entertainment business, he has no plans to act or appear on the big screen. He says, “I acted in my first indie film, and I knew then that in front of the camera was not for me.” Working in front of the camera may not have been Bobb’s calling, but he has an impressive resume that highlights his production skills behind the camera. Prior to working at Tyler Perry’s studio, he worked on films such as Copland, Primary Colors, Celebrity, and Stomp the Yard. He also worked on TV shows such as New York Undercover, and NYPD Blue, Love Don’t Cost a Thing, and My Wife and Kids. In addition to working on television series and motion pictures, he wrote and produced a few independent films as well. It was while he was in New York City that his career took a pivotal turn. A friend told him about a friend in Atlanta that could use his help. “Reuben Cannon was attending the American Black Film Festival, and he told me about a filmmaker that was just starting out -- Tyler Perry,” shared Bobb, “the rest is history.” He has an intriguing story that is continuing to unfold in Atlanta with his new BobbCat Film Company. “We have a series coming out called The Battle,” said Bobb. “It’s about marching bands and explores the whole process of the work that goes into creating these magnificent marching bands.” He added, “We also have a cooking show with David and Tamela Mann, also known as Mr. Brown and Cora from the sitcom, Meet the Browns, coming this year called, Hanging with the Mann’s.” Bobb asserted, “With David involved, you can be sure it’s not just your average cooking show.” In addition to the series, BobbCat will also be releasing a film called Raising Izzy, by David Martyn Conley. In Sept 2011, the film earned the best screen play award at the American Black Film Festival. Bobb believes that in order to be successful in the entertainment business, one must have faith, work ethic, and be able to recognize the value of helping others. “Have a passion for what you do, and have a plan,” he advises. “Remember a business always has a plan.” ■

irty Rose R&B Trio is sprouting their thorns of love ballads in their new CD titled “LEAKS.” Dirty Rose comes with a zest of creative hip-hop style and love songs. With their new CD “LEAKS,” they have become the heart throb for many ladies throughout the South. There is no doubt- the sexy lyrics on Dirty Rose’s LEAKS CD are making waves of love flow to the hearts of their fans. Once signed with Universal Records capturing the attention of Capital Records, Interscope and Mathew Knowles, CEO of Music World Entertainment as youths, Dirty Rose have proven they still satisfy the crave for classic R&B music with modern hip-hop blast. Dirty Rose shares their talent in the upcoming music video Come With Me- a story of love. As a gentleman, he wants his lady to be secure about unleashing her sexuality. So he convinces her she is safe to do so in bed. However, she is confused

about crossing boundaries to protect her heart. Come With Me video was released on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. The R&B Trio is bringing back classic R&B love ballads with hip-hop flare melodies. The three tenors are hitting sweet notes throughout Come With Me. Further, Dirty Rose is expected to be an opening act for singer Trey Songz. The trio is already sought after for endorsement of a beverage drink-which the company’s name is to be announced in the near future-before being signed to a major record label. Chase and Zandric are natives of Houston, TX, while Devin is a native of Miami, FL. The trio never would have imaged they would come together in Atlanta, Georgia to form the group Dirty Rose. They maintain their commonality of “Southern Realness” through the songs they sing about-Love, Sex and its conflicts. Dirty Rose is definitely digging up dirty and planting seeds of love lyrics into the hearts of fans that blossom into a rose-a Dirty Rose with Love. ■ For more information and music log on to: www.DirtyRosemusic.com.

TRAVEL TRENDSS

Women Travelers are on the Go

There are tour agencies, cruises, books, websites and hotels that focus on the needs of the single female traveler. There are even guides for the African American female traveler. There are some advantages to joining these groups. You can make friendships with women who share your interests and may have experience on the locations you want to visit, plus the benefit of safety in numbers. Whichever method you use, you should do extensive research into any potential destination. One important concern for female travelers is cultural attitudes towards dress. In some countries, the clothing styles are identical to those in the United States. In others, they are far more conservative, and a woman dressed less modestly than the local custom risks attracting undesirable at-

Also, what is the status of women in this destination? How are people of different races treated? What is the typical cuisine? What is the attitude towards religious expression? What are permissible displays of affection? Has there been a recent history of unrest or violence? Is English spoken at all or will you have to communicate in a foreign language? If the latter, phrase books or conversational lessons in the other language are preferable to a straight word-to-word dictionary. These books can instruct you in the sentences a traveler would need to know, such as asking for directions to your hotel or ordering food. Next, you should research the specifications of a particular trip. Are you going to make all the arrangements yourself, use a travel agency, or go online? Where will you be staying? If it is a hotel, make sure it is in a safe neighborhood. Know the emergency phone numbers and the directions from your hotel to the nearest U.S. embassy. How will you get around? If you will be using the bus, subway or some other public transportation, try to set next to another woman as you travel. Make copies of your passport and all your travel documents accessible. Keep these precautions in mind, and you will have a world of enriching experiences waiting for you. ■

frican American women are finding their place in the growing phenomenon of women traveling on their own, whether it is for business, education, vacation, family visits or other reasons. While a woman traveling on her own is a normal occurrence within the United States, women may have different concerns about venturing solo in a foreign country. Political unrest, treatment of women, cultural stereotypes and health conditions are factors that can affect a traveler’s safety and enjoyment of a destination. But they don’t have to stop your plans if you have all the facts.

tention or punishment. When in doubt, always err on the side of caution. At the same time, don’t pack too heavily; stick with the necessities. Some travelers do this by packing old clothes they would get rid off anyway, and tossing them out for the return home.

The story of Black History Month begins in Chicago during the late summer of 1915. An alumnus of the University of Chicago with many friends in the city, Carter G. Woodson traveled from Washington, D.C. to participate in a national celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of emancipation sponsored by the state of Illinois. Thousands of African Americans traveled from across the country to see exhibits highlighting the progress their people had made since the destruction of slavery. Awarded a doctorate in Harvard three years earlier, Woodson joined the other exhibitors with a black history display.

If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you to go on in spite of all. And so today I still have a dream. ~Martin Luther King, Jr. "It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we are today, but we have just begun. Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today." ~President Barack Obama "Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society." ~Malcolm X www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com
