am living proof that life can take you in different directions. Prior to becoming the graphic designer for T2T, I had no magazine layout experience. I had experience with newspaper layout considering my father is the owner of a weekly newspaper, but had not attempted layout for many years prior. Willie Stewart, founder of T2T approached me with his vision of producing a publication that no one in the industry had done. Having seen me develop into a graphic designer after leaving the architectural field, he had enough faith in me and my ability to give me a shot at creating a visual personality to a then, brand new publication for the Atlanta community. I was a little leery but accepted the challenge. Five years later, we have managed to accomplish so much as a publication where others have failed. We started in Atlanta, branched to Charlotte, North Carolina and Birmingham, Alabama. We added Columbus, Ohio and several states in the Midwest and the list of cities continued to grow. With the help of some other significant T2T staff (thanks Lukeither), we have managed to acquire readership well into the thousands each month and the numbers continue to grow! I am so proud to be a part of this publication. The ability to recognize positive people in communities around our country is truly an honor and we do it like no other publication on the planet. When opportunities present themselves to you, don’t be afraid to accept new challenges. You never know where the roads may take you. I thank you for reading this publication and I encourage you to continue supporting Trendsetters to Trendsetters Magazine. The best is yet to come! ■ www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

Olivia Rusk: Teen Author tells Alopecia Story By Dr. Linda Amerson

M

illions of children are affected with Alopecia due to various reasons. Because a large percentage suffer in silence, we would like to break the silence and let their voices be heard. Depression may become too familiar to parents, and they will search high and low for specialist to help their children. Education about the various categories (over 75) of Alopecia still needs to be showcased to society, thru print, social, television medias and educational seminars. Who is Olivia Rusk? Olivia is a 14 yr old Trendsetter! She is a teenage author who is a smart motivational speaker on a mission. Many times an unwanted situation/ condition may be turned into a passion for awareness. Her motivational speaking to her piers is targeted to improve self esteem, address bullying, and improve character traits. Olivia’s story is welcomed to create awareness. We will begin with what is Alopecia? Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, which currently affects over 80 million American of all ages and races. We have found a few common categories in children. These categories include: Trichotillomania, Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata, Congenital Alopecia, Drug-Induced Alopecia, and Wind Damage Alopecia just to name a few. Q: Mrs. Rusk, from a parents prospective, was Olivia’s diagnosis a challenge for you? A: Olivia’s diagnosis was extremely difficult. I had never even heard of alopecia and was shocked that the medical community did not have answers to my questions. I wanted to know if Olivia would lose all of her hair or just the small spot that we first noticed. All I could get from the doctors was…… “Sorry, we can not answer that”

Q: Mrs. Rusk what would be your advise to parents whom have children diagnosed with Alopecia? A: I would advise parents to reach out to other parents who have been through the same situation. When Olivia developed alopecia, there was hardly any resources available. I would have loved to be able to speak to another mom about it. We are also members of www.alopeciaworld.com, a free networking site for people affected by alopecia. We know the people who started the site and they are wonderful. The site is literally worldwide and you can communicate with people of all ages. Q: Olivia will you please tell us when you first received your Alopecia diagnosis? A: I began losing my hair when I was 18 months old. 8

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2012

Olivia with Today’s Q: What type of Alopecia were you Show hosts diagnosed with? Honda and Kathie A: At first it was Alopecia Areata because I just had small spots of hair loss. But within 4 weeks I lost all the hair on my head, so I guess then I had Alopecia Totalis. Then most of my hair regrew, but when I was 8 years old I lost all of my hair on my head and all of my body hair, so then I had Alopecia Universals. Since then, I have some body hair and my eyelashes back. So I guess you could say that I have had all three types. Q: What type of treatments were recommended for you and were they effective? A: When I was 2 years old we went to Riley Children’s Hospital and the doctor prescribed a topical steroid and Women’s Rogaine. Yes, if did work, but when my hair fell out the second time, I did not want to use the medication again. Q: How did this diagnosis affect you at school? A: Believe it or not, the kids in my school were okay with it. When I was 8 years old I wore a wig for 5 months. I had to use a type of glue to attach it to my head and it was hot and itchy. One day, I woke up and told my mom that I was going to school that day without my wig. She was not happy and tried to talk me out of it. I felt like I was hiding who I was and was determined to not wear the wig. My mom came to my school and spoke to my teacher, the school nurse and counselor. My mom was upset and finally they told her to just go home, they would handle it with the other kids. They spoke to the kids in my class and explained what was happening. Nothing bad happened that day and I think it is because I am so confident. www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

UP & COMING TRENDSETTTERS

Q: Did you like wearing wigs, caps, or scarfs? A: I never liked caps, hats or scarfs. I only wore the wig for 5 months. Q. What/Who helped you the most with coping with your Alopecia? A: I don’t really know. I was just okay with it. Maybe it was because I developed alopecia when I was just a toddler and have had it since then. I am glad that I did not lose my hair for the first time when I was a teenager. It would have been much harder. Q: Why did you decide to write your book? A: I am a motivational speaker and have share my story with kids in schools through out Indiana. Kids really like what I have to say about bullying and they really seem to listen to me. The book is a way to share my message with more kids that I might not get to meet in person. Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 3-5 years? A: I hope to continue speaking and I am also interested in sign language. I have a scholarship to IUPUI and would like to use it to become a sign language interpreter.

Q: Are you affiliated with any other organizations? A. Our organization is Olivia’s Cause and we have an association with The Women Like Us Foundation. We also like to support Alopecia World and Locks of Love. Q: What advise would you give parents who have children affected with Alopecia? A: Support the way your child wants to handle their alopecia. My mom thought the best thing for me, was to wear a wig. She was shocked and concerned when I decided not to wear it. It took her awhile to really accept my decision. Q: If someone wants to contact you to purchase your book, how may they contact you? A: My book is “Just Your Average Teenager, Who Happens To Be Bald” and you can find out more about it and order the book on our website: www.oliviascause.org or at: www.oliviarusk.com You can also follow Olivia’s Cause on facebook. To contact her mother Sandy Rusk email her at sandyrusk@netscalp.net.

After the show, they felt an all time high. They finally knew what they wanted to do for the rest of their lives, and that is to make hip hop music. Having both grown up with the music in their lives, they felt as though rapping is their true passion. After recording a few songs from the bathroom in the basement (inspired by Hustle and Flow), they put the music on YouTube.com

for the whole world to see. "We aren't trying to be your typical rap group, rapping about living the good life. The good life as in money, women, and drugs/alcohol of course. Considering we don't have any of those things, it would be pretty hard to rap about. We want to try and educate the public, and express our feelings on certain subjects." -Nate Kosnich. O.T.O has a higher level of thinking than other teenage rap groups. The lyrics aren't just something you can understand by simply hearing them. They want you to look beneath the surface. Teaching Kids Money Skills: Five Golden Rules for Parents

Te

By Kim Daley

aching money management skills to children can seem a bit overwhelming at times. Yet, with careful planning and a good attitude, it can be an enjoyable experience for both parents and youth. It is not only a great time to commit to teach our children, it's also a great time to recommit as adults to a financially fit future. Most commitments require a process to complete. Teaching our kids to be good money managers is no different. To help in this process, Kidbudget has come up with five golden rules for parents as they teach their children money management skills. Below are the five golden rules:

Golden Rule #1: Make it Fun! Use games, activities, and even jokes to teach your kids about money. Go online and you will find dozens of activities and money games on the subject. Even toddlers enjoy tossing coins and counting change. There are videos on the internet that show the process of coin making and printing currency. Use play money and set up a store where your child can purchase small items. It is true that kids learn faster when they are having fun.

Golden Rule #2: Look for Teaching Opportunities. Are you going to the store? Talk to your kids about money. Paying your bills? Talk to your kids about what you are doing. Are you getting money from the ATM? Explain how the ATM works and why you keep your money in the bank. Help your child understand that you had to work for the money you deposited and that the ATM isn't just a cash machine, but is just giving you what is already yours. It is also OK to let your kids know when funds are low. If you feel like

eating out but decide you can't afford it, let your kids know that you do not spend what you don't have. Explain the difference between needs and wants and that eating out is a want. This is a classic case of “actions speak louder than words.

Golden Rule #3: Be Patient. Good habits take time. As you teach new concepts, realize that each child learns at his/her own pace. Some may pick up money concepts quickly. For others, it may take more time. If it becomes a battle or either side gets frustrated, it's time to cool down and try again later. It is also very helpful to have a plan in place before you begin. Using a formal teaching method or money management system will help both sides eliminate frustration. Find a money management system designed specifically for kids. Above all, remember rule #1, make it fun.

Golden Rule #4: Keep at it. Your kids will be excited to learn budgeting skills. Keep the excitement alive! Help them find opportunities to earn money. As they keep a budget, it may be helpful to meet on a regular basis to go over their goals and spending patterns. Give your child an incentive. When he/she reaches a specific goal, have a special night out or treat rewarding them for their hard work. Don't underestimate the value of simple praise. The satisfaction that comes from setting a money goal and reaching that goal will reinforce the habits you are teaching. Help your child to succeed and feel the joy of success.

Bank and our partners helped ensure that a building which played a significant role in Washington DC’s past will do so again in the future.” Located near the corner of 7th and T Streets, the Howard Theatre— "The Theatre for the People”—was originally constructed in 1910 and served as one of the oldest and most popular performing arts venues for African American singers and musicians when the nation was deeply divided by segregation. Late greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and Sidney Poitier all performed at the Howard Theatre. The theatre closed in 1980. Redeveloped by Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. in collaboration with the District of Columbia and the Ellis Development Group, the 16-month restoration of the theatre returns it to its original use as a premier performing arts venue. “Our long term goal has been to re-establish the Howard Theatre as the ‘crown jewel’ of the arts and entertainment community in the District,” said Malik Ellis, a Principal for Ellis Development Group. “The dedication and collaboration of all those involved in this public and private partnership have made our vision a reality.” In addition to financing from U.S. Bank, the renovation of the theatre has been made possible with support from Eagle Bank, the District of Columbia Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, the Philip Graham Fund, Howard University, the National Park Service’s Save Our America's Treasures Program and contributions from individual donors. ■ Photos by Allix Wright for The District 2009-2012.

Five Golden Rules for Parents Golden Rule #5: Mistakes are Good. This may seem counter intuitive, but it is true. Think of it like this, would you rather your child spend foolishly on a toy when he's 9 or make a poor purchase when he's buying his first car? This is the training ground and mistakes will happen. The consequences are much easier to handle while they are still at home under your roof. Allow them to make mistakes. It's OK. Help them learn from those mistakes and make better choices next time. With these five golden rules in your tool belt, you will be much more prepared as you raise great money managers. Remember to use games, talk openly about money, have a plan or kid-friendly method of teaching in place ahead of time, be patient with yourself and your kids, keep at it, and allow the kids to make mistakes. For a plan that fits that incorporates all these methods and many more, head on over to Kidbudget and check it out. Most importantly commit to do something now. As William Shakespeare says, “In delay there lies no plenty.” So do not delay, start today. ■

air loss has reached epidemic numbers worldwide. Did you know there is a field of specialists who help consumers with alopecia and scalp conditions? To expose this little known field, we will begin with what is Alopecia and Trichology? Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, which includes a very broad umbrella for over 75 types. A panel of judges will select the winning essay and receive a FREE Cruise for the child and one parent. The child will read the winning essay on Tuesday night during Awards Night. personal trainer is basically a coach or personal instructor for all of your exercising related fitness goals. There are definitely elements of a good personal fitness program that don’t include exercising but exercising is the one thing that your personal trainer will be able to help you with. If you have never worked out with a personal trainer or if you are unfamiliar with how the system works there are some basic facts that you should now. First off, a physical trainer is a hired professional that will help you, since you are paying him, to reach your exercise goals. Your personal trainer will likely help you set those goals in the first place. A good personal trainer is educated and certified to do what he is doing. There are however instances where you should be careful to note if your trainer is overstepping his boundaries as an exercise expert. You should always remember that your trainer is there to help you exercise. If there are other elements of personal fitness that you have questions about or that you want to have addressed, your personal trainer probably isn’t the person to take those questions or concerns to. Your personal trainer can tell you some basics such as how running on a treadmill will help your heart but he cannot diagnose any conditions such as coronary angina. For example, your sleep habits, nutrition needs and your disease history should be handled by a doctor or some other licensed health professional. Everything that your personal trainer is qualified to give you advice on you should be able to put into practice while you are still at the gym. You should consider looking for a more professional and honest personal trainer if your trainer gives you specific dieting information or prescribing any substances such as herbs or supplements. Your personal trainer will know the basics about diet-

ing and other areas of fitness, but only as they relate directly to your workouts. A lot of your results will also depend on you and the effort that you are willing to put into your workouts. You should never assume that just because you have hired a professional and you are paying him that you will walk away with your dream body if you haven’t given your best effort. If you get a good personal trainer and if you are willing to exercise and really get to work you will likely enjoy your sessions with your personal trainer and start a new phase in your life of personal fitness. Your personal trainer will always be there for you to welcome you to the gym and to give you a great reason to get there in the first place. ■

o Brooks says he is the next up and coming “leading man.” Recently landing a key role in a new movie he is even more encouraged to talk and walk what he believes. With experience under his belt and inspiration in his soul, he is about to “break out” in the film industry. Look out because he’s …MOVING ON UP!!!!

Ro: Yes I do. I am already a “Leading Man” in my eyes, that’s why I tell everyone that. I believe that you have to speak things into existence. “Speak those things that are not as though they already are.” That’s what I do. It’s only a matter of time. I mean, it’s not the only job I will take, but you have to have that inside drive and support to keep you inspired and motivated.

Carol: You were born Jerome Curtis Brooks Jr., was the name to long? Was it not a stage sounding name? Why Ro? Ro: Because, when I was younger I shortened it to Rome. When people couldn’t understand I was saying Rome, they called me Ro. So it started sounding strong to me and it just stuck.

Carol: What else motivates you? Ro: My wife, my kids and my family. Just knowing I want a better life for them keeps me motivated. It’s not hard for me. Something as little as receiving a word, a phone call or even a text message can motivate me.

Carol: How did you get into acting? Ro: I always wanted to be an entertainer, whether it was rapping, acting, producing or directing. The problem was getting past the fear of not being able to do it. Not succeeding at it. Not having a blue print. I was just afraid of the unknown. Carol: What got you past the fear? Ro: I got a part as an “extra” in a movie and when I was on the set I felt so comfortable. The first day on the set felt like home. Carol: Who were your greatest influences? Ro: Oh I appreciate everyone that studies the craft but I think my main influence really was myself. I just really wanted it. Carol: Do you think you’re the one to watch and why? 24

Carol: The entertainment industry is not new to you is it? Ro: No. I Won "Showtime at the Apollo" rapping and dancing in 1990. We were the first Rappers to win at the Apollo. In addition, I owned a record store, record labels, I’ve been a DJ and promoted shows. I’m an all around guy. Carol: You’ve also appeared in original movies made for T.V One and HBO, as well as, Music Videos with artist such as; Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Little Mo and 50 Cent. Ro: Yes, I keep myself busy. (Laughter) Carol: Do you still Rap? Ro: Rap will always be a part of me. I still freestyle from time to time. www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT / COVER STORY

Carol: Let’s talk about the new break-out roll that you most recently landed. Ro: Yes. The Jeff Byrd directed film starring Deitrick Haddon, called “A Beautiful Soul.” Carol: Tell us about the movie. Ro: Well, it’s an inspirational movie. Deitrick Haddon is a guy who starts out in the church and then kind of loses his way. I am part of his security team. Carol: I would have never guessed that from the trailer I saw. Ro: I know, but I don’t want to give anything away, so I will just say my character is a security guard with a twist. (Laugher) Carol: Okay I won’t push you to tell us any more. I guess we will have to find out when we see the movie. I have worked with Detrick in the past. I love him as a Gospel artist and now as an actor. How was it working with him on this film? Ro: He’s a cool guy. He showed me a lot of love, and he’s a very good actor. I play his music all the time, and I appreciate his style because young people will listen to it. Carol: When is the movie in Theaters? Ro: May 4th.

Carol: I will make sure to see it the first weekend it’s out. What else can we look forward to coming out of your camp in the future? Ro: Well, I have a movie that I will play “Lead Actor” coming out called “CarrMell Sunday” and a made for T.V. Film called “Will to Live,” which I also produced. Carol: During my research, I ran across your e-book on line. Ro: Yes it’s called “Life as an Extra.” I wrote that book mainly for actors because when I first started out there was no manual and no assistance. I had to learn everything first hand. So my hope was that the book, if read, could save them some time on their journey. Anyone needing any information can find it on my website at www. Robrooks.com, and at www.imdb.com/name/ nm2497106. Carol: I wish you the best. You seem like a real humble, stand up guy that loves his family and people in general. I salute you for pursuing your dream. Would you like to leave some advice for our readers? Ro: Know what it is that you want to do. Be sure about it and know “Why” you want to do it. If you don’t know “Why,” you will never be able to have the focus to achieve the success you desire. Above all, Put God First. ■

In addition to investing in SHP, MJE will provide strategic advice with the company’s expansion efforts and commitment to developing innovative healthcare programs in underserved urban communities throughout the country. SHP also announced today the official launch of Clear Health Alliance, a comprehensive Medicaid Specialty Plan offered by Simply Healthcare Plans to individuals living with HIV and AIDS. MJE and SHP will collaborate to promote and expand Clear Health Alliance, which is currently in Miami Dade County, to other markets in Florida and across the nation. Last week the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott signed into law a Bill expanding the Medicaid HIV and AIDS program on a statewide basis. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with SHP’s team on developing healthcare programs focused on the needs of individuals in underserved communities. SHP is creating programs that will make an impact on improving the quality and access to care for individuals in urban areas and I am hopeful that the community, providers and hospitals embrace these

Magic Johnson Enterprises Announces a Strategic Alliance and Investment in Simply Healthcare Plans Launch of Clear Health Alliance, a Medicaid Specialty Plan for Individuals Living with HIV/AIDS efforts,” said Earvin “Magic” Johnson. He added, “Clear Health Alliance is just one example of how SHP is developing innovative programs that provide a comprehensive care approach to many Latinos and African Americans disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS that currently are not afforded access to such programs. I have always been a true believer that effective treatment of HIV/AIDS requires a comprehensive and holistic approach and Simply Healthcare Plans, through Clear Health Alliance, not only provides its members with all the traditional healthcare benefits you expect from a health plan, they also provide many additional benefits that I have found to be extremely important to support the treatment of HIV and AIDS.” Approximately $29 billion is spent annually by the U.S. on HIV/ AIDS. Half of all domestic HIV/AIDS treatment is funded by federal and state government annually through Medicaid and Medicare. About 56,000 new HIV/AIDS cases are reported annually in the U.S. Nearly 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV/AIDS. Of those, approximately 30 percent are not accessing care. Florida ranks third in the nation in the number of persons living with HIV/AIDS. Miami-Dade County ranks first in the nation for new AIDS cases per capita while Broward County ranks second and Palm Beach County ranks sixth. “We are excited and honored to be working with Earvin and MJE to expand access to critically important medical and support services for individuals in underserved communities,” said Miguel B. Fernandez, Chairman of Simply Healthcare Plans, Inc. He added, “Our expertise and knowledge of Medicaid and Medicare, combined with Earvin’s insight of urban communities and his advocacy for Latinos and African Americans will help meet an increasing need for healthcare services in Florida and across the country.” ■

istoric images of scenes and students at Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse, Spelman and Morris Brown colleges are featured in Wells Fargo’s indoor and outdoor mural unveiled today at its West End University bank store. To commemorate the occasion, Wells Fargo presented the Opportunity Funding Corporation with a $145,000 grant to start a business incubator fund. The fund will help create jobs and new businesses in the AfricanAmerican community through support for promising enterprises of MBA graduates of historically black colleges and universities across the Southeast. “We are so pleased to recognize the enormous contributions to the world of these great Atlanta institutions,” said Atlanta Regional President Mike Donnelly. “And we’re proud to help business graduates of historically black institutions through this new fund for emerging businesses.” The mural is the newest in Atlanta and among 50 already installed or shortly to be installed across the metro area. It is among 1,800 in Wells Fargo bank stores across the nation. Each is unique to the area in which the bank store is located, and was developed with the aid of local archives and historians. Helping to dedicate the mural today were Dr. Robert Franklin, president of Morehouse, Dr. Stanley Pritchett, president of Morris Brown, and Atlanta City Council member Michael Julian Bond, son of Morehouse alumnus Julian Bond. The elder Bond was one of the first AfricanAmericans elected to the Georgia House of Representatives and after a 20year legislative career became chairman of the NAACP. “For 150 years we have helped to transform America through leaders such as Julian Bond,” Dr. Franklin said. “We are thrilled that Wells Fargo has embraced our educational community in this way.” “We are honored and proud that Wells Fargo has connected with the rich history of higher education in Atlanta,” said Dr. Pritchett.

Representing the non-profit Opportunity Funding Corporation, whose mission is to promote African-American entrepreneurs and enterprises, was Bill Clement, chairman of the board. “Through this we will inspire and create a more viable entrepreneur class and generate jobs in the African-American community,” Clement said. “This will greatly expand what we are able to do.” He explained that the idea for the fund arose from the OFC Venture Challenge, a business plan competition among MBA students from historically black colleges and universities across the Southeast. Clark Atlanta University students were among those from 24 HBCU’s who took part in the just-completed annual competition in Atlanta. The intent will be to help enterprises arising from highly ranked business plans. Clement said he hopes the fund will grow with additional private support. Helping to accept the check on behalf of Clark Atlanta University were a former dean of the business school, Prof. Ed Davis, and two students.

“This is an opportunity to actually turn these plans into businesses,” said Clark Atlanta graduate student Tversa Ricks, who took part in the recent competition. “Investors always ask what funds can you add, so this will really help. Added Jeffrey Muiru, another Clark Atlantat participant, “Business plans that otherwise wouldn’t be funded can now become reality.”

Murals create local connections Among those providing images for the new mural were the Spelman College Photograph Collection, Morehouse College Archives, the Atlanta History Center and the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center. Wells Fargo’s murals are a snapshot of turn-of the-century

America, conveying a sense of history, tradition, longevity, optimism and progress. Each mural creates a connection to the history of the surrounding area. The West End University mural is13 feet wide and 7 feet tall and double-sided so it can be viewed inside and outside the store. It has 18 images in all. Its unveiling followed by a day the unveiling of a mural at the Atlantic Station store in the company’s headquarters building for its Southeast region. That mural features images from across Atlanta, including a prominent photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Ambassador Andrew Young. Other murals will be installed in the Edgewood and West End Lee locations, bringing the total across Georgia to 73. “Our customers really enjoy our murals,” Donnelly said. “They reinforce how local we really are.” ■

INSPIRATIONAL Guest Writer,

IVORY D. PAYNE Publisher The Praise Reporter Columbus, OH/Jacksonville, FL

WÉÇËà [tàx re you “Hating” on anybody? Is anybody “Hating” on you? If so, don’t let it control your life. Be prepared for it, acknowledge it exists and move on. Remember Jesus Christ said in John 16:18, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” If we dedicate our lives to following Christ, we can be assured that we are going to be “hated” for various reasons. Maybe we will be “hated” if we blessed with fame, a successful position or pastorate, house, wife or husband, children and other trappings that go with success. Maybe we have been called to oversee a successful “mega” church to work in the the kingdom of Christ. Maybe others have been called to some little unheard of church with a handful of members and have not been so fortunate. So they may look at you with envy. Christ knows our capabilities, He knows what we have and what successes our ego can handle. If we can’t handle things like He thinks we should, we might end up with egg on our face. Joel Osteen says about “Haters,” ‘When you’re blessed, the haters come out. When you wear God’s blessings well, don’t be surprised if it draws jealousy out of people.” Get over it and move on in the name of Jesus Christ. Haters have existed since the beginning of time. Indian political and spiritual leader Mahatma Ghandi said about haters: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” Think about it - it is not about you and them - it’s about you and God. As Christ’s ambassadors, we have to example our own attitudes not of Christ that might cause the “haters” to come out. If Jesus Christ, our Lord, head of the church who was so much more than us in personal greatness and personal worth, was hated by the world, why should we not expect to be hard, or strange when we experience it. Perhaps when we stop focusing so much on ourselves and place the focus on Christ, where it rightly belongs, we won’t have so much time to be concerned with the “haters” out there. Samuel Jackson said, “The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.” So be kind to each other, haters and non-haters alike and remember they hated our Lord and Savior before the hated us. ■

eing thankful is not some sort of magic formula; it is the language of love and appreciation for the smallest of things in life. When our mind is occupied and filled with thankfulness, we have no time for worrying or complaining. If we practice thankfulness consistently and remember regardless of situations and circumstances to appreciate the love of family and friends, negative thought patterns will gradually grow weaker and weaker. Yes, there will be adversity and a plethora of problems that awaits you, still God can provide peace even in the midst of a challenge. Look for the small treasures strategically that's placed along the way, for He is still on the throne. Thankfulness opens our hearts to His Presence being in our lives. His light that shines in our lives during our darkest moments helps to remove the sting of adversity. We reside in a fallen world, where blessings and sorrows intermingle freely. But, remembering to be thankful at all times, we can walk through the darkest days with Joy in our hearts because we know that the Light of His Presence is shining on us and He will never leave or forsaken us. There will come a day those hard times will come to an end and a long awaited opportunity opens up for you, so go ahead and claim your blessings and healings now. A life filled with thankfulness and praise becomes a life filled with miracles and you open yourself up to receive blessings. Get up each day and begin your day with a heart of thankfulness and be filled with wondrous Joy. By Georgeann McCrary

s my family and I were driving through a nearby neighborhood, I could not help but admire one particular yard. The grass was thick, lush, and green. In comparison, however, the next few yards were just the opposite. There were sparse patches, the grass was more yellow than green and armies of dandelions were marching across these lackluster lawns inching closer and closer to the stellar yard. I wondered how the owners of the dandelion infested yards could allow such a takeover. Did they care? Were they elderly neighbors who could no longer manage the upkeep of the yard? Whatever the reason, the weeds had seemingly won and their ugliness was spreading. Just like the weeds in a literal yard can get out of control, so can the weeds in our spiritual yard. Weeds can come in the form of financial woes, depression, relationship discord, anxiety, sickness or whatever is insidiously consuming and inching out our joy, stability, and hope. We have to be determined to protect and defend our property with the Word of God. His word is our “weed and feed” fertilizer. As we continue our regime of getting this fertilizer deep within the soil of our spirits the weeds are destroyed at the root so they can no longer

36

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2012

wreak havoc in our lives. The Word as a fertilizer provides nurturing, encouragement, support, direction, and correction. The Word is also "good seed" that should be ever planted in our hearts. It is this good seed that germinates and bears good fruit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV). As with any seed that has been planted, it must be watered in order to grow. The Word of God is like living water gushing forth to quench our parched soil. We must continue to read, study, and be guided by the Spirit in order for continuous growth to occur in our lives. Finally, just as we mow our physical yard, we must also mow our spiritual yards. We must cut off what is no longer useful , necessary, or beneficial. We must prune what is prohibiting new life from blossoming and flourishing. Prune away the fear, insecurity, low self-esteem and even procrastination. Just as the mower has a blade, we know that the word of God is sharper than any twoedged sword and can cut these wretched weeds right out of our spiritual yard. We don’t need the Farmer’s Almanac to tell us when and how to manage our land. God is the Master Gardener and Has provided us with His Word which provides all the tools we need to lie in the green pastures of life. ■

The Everyday Woman: Vol. 5

Fear/Doubt/Unbelief By Chinaz Love

F Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Hebrews 3:12 KJV

ear, Doubt and Unbelief are first cousins in the Kingdom, but not of God. The heart of the unbeliever is described as evil in the aforementioned scripture. James chapter one reports that a mind that doubts God is unstable in all of his ways. The word tells us in so many places, “Fear Not!” If we believe that God is the living God, there should be no fear in our lives. Fear, doubt and unbelief are the silent bullies on the block. These bullies have you afraid to leave home and branch out into your purpose. Fearful of the bullies, doubting that you can win the fight, and unbelieving in the report that the bullies have disbanded for the day, you are trapped. Not sure if they are standing around the corner waiting to beat you down, reminding you that they are stronger. You believe that the bullies will surely humiliate you after your beating, letting everyone know that they have won the fight. Stripping you, leaving you to walk home in your bare feet, cold, beaten, embarrassed, and ashamed. You neglect to move forward in the things of God. Instead, you stand in the window, watching, fearful of the bullies. There has been a time when I heard the voice of God speak to me about a situation and I was unsure that it was God, so I kept my mouth shut. THIS IS DOUBT. There were times when I knew it was God but I wasn’t sure that He would bring to past what was said. So, I kept my mouth shut. THIS IS UNBELIEF. There were times when I neglected to speak on the things God had given me. I thought that the people would not receive my words were from God. THIS IS FEAR. Fear, doubt and unbelief, prohibits the potential of God in our lives. When writing my poetry, I would read it and wonder, “Where did these words come from?” How did I connect this feeling with this thought? Immediately I knew they were not my own thoughts, because I didn’t speak in the manner the thoughts were presented. My friends and family said it was a gift, but I was afraid to pursue the thoughts. Even after I heard His voice say write the book, fear gripped me at the thought of revealing my issues to the world. Fearful of the world’s rejection, fearful of the world’s judgment, fearful of the world’s ridicule. All the while hearing the voice of God in my ear. Fear insults the Kingdom of God. His vessel, His creation, being fearful, unbelieving and doubtful of His gift. It is equivalent to a disobedient, rebellious child and it hijacks the Kingdom of God in you! ■ TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2012

LIVING the DREAM… By Carol Courtney Anglin

recently chatted with the very beautiful Talented America’s Next Top Model star, Dominique Reighard. A woman of many talents, we discussed her attitude on success and her new career in Music. The interview was powerful and inspiring. Dominique was just as we remembered her, with her warm smile and winning personality. Carol: As a child, did you dream of becoming a model or was that something that you developed growing up? Dominique: Yes. I come from a family of 5. As the middle child, I always wanted to be on stage and in the spotlight. I remember my younger brothers and I would play on a make shift runway. I have home videos of me striking poses. I feel blessed to be able to have the opportunity to become what was only a dream as a child. Carol: I think it’s great when people know what they want to do at an early age, because you get to spend your whole life preparing. Dominique: Yes, I grew up with the determination to live on top of the world and the stamina to live life to its fullest. Carol: Where did you grow up? Dominique: In Columbus Ohio Carol: Are you married? Dominique: Yes, I am married. Carol: Congratulations. How long have you been married? Dominique: We were together for 6 years and married for 2. 40

He’s very supportive. He’s my backbone in everything. My number one fan! (Laughter) Carol: Your look is unique. What is your nationality? Dominique: My mom is Jamaican and my father is German. Carol: You know, every time I mention your name I get such great feedback from your fans. In a lot of people’s eyes, you should have been Americans Next Top Model. What do you say about that? Dominique: It’s okay with me. It just wasn’t my time yet. I was honored to be on the show. What people don’t know is that I tried out for America’s Next Top Model 5 times. It wasn’t until I moved to LA, to continue launching my career, that I got the call from the show. Even then I was the last girl selected. Tyra opened up an additional slot for me. So I will forever be grateful. Initially, I was a little disappointed, but I will never give up on myself. Top Model gave me an incredible Platform that has allowed me to grow into my own. Carol: But you won a contract through the show “Modelville,” a reality spinoff of the show. Dominique: Yes that was a lot of fun and I spent the whole year as the “face” and spokesperson for the beauty line Carol’s Daughter. Carol: That win also launched your “image” to appear in several national magazines including Seventeen and Essence. Dominique: Yes and several television shows, a runway appearance during Fashion Week and I also returned to ANTM in Cycle 17 for the ‘All Star’ Season. www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

Carol: I remember seeing you on the HBO series “Entourage.” That was a lot happening at one time. How did you handle it all? Dominique: Well I felt like God Gave me an opportunity, and it was up to me to do something with it. I was in my zone, and I loved it because I love the business and traveling. I had a lot of fun investing in my future. During the tour, I had countless interviews with young girls in attendance, who were interested in making modeling a career. I got a chance to be a help in guiding them so I also saw it as an opportunity to give back. Carol: With your height of success so far, what keeps you grounded? Dominique: Well I have a wonderful family that keeps me grounded and I feel that I am a very humble person inside. I am grateful for the opportunity to grow. I am not very superficial. I love the lime light, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t let it take me over. Carol: In business, integrity is often compromised. How do you keep your confidence up and integrity in tack? Dominique: I ask myself, how I want to be remembered. I want to be remembered as someone that represents things that are positive, inspiring and encouraging to others. I consider myself to be somewhat of a role model and believe that you should lead by example. I wouldn’t want to do anything that I could look back on, that would bring embarrassment to me or my family. Carol: Let’s talk about your music. Not only are you a famous Model but I see you are also embarking on a music career? Dominique: Yes I have a single that came out in February called “Main Chick” featuring female lyricist, Diamond of “Crime Mob.” I have another one I’m working on now in the

studio called “I Feel Like Someone Tonight.” Carol: I feel like someone tonight? Dominique: Yeah, you know how you get all dressed up and go out and feel good about yourself. (Laughter) Carol: I think we have all been there and felt like that. I am really looking forward to hearing the new song. I love the “On Top of the World” video. You have a look and sound that will obviously transcend cultural lines. Dominique: Thank you! I am touring this summer internationally. I can thank Tyra Banks for that also because it was America’s Next Top Model that gave me the International audience. Carol: What else can we look forward to in the future for “Dominique?” Dominique: All I can say is stay tuned. Follow me on twitter and Face book. Visit my website. It’s always something new happening. Every day I get better and better, and things keep changing and growing so keep up with me. Carol: Do you have any encouraging words for our readers. Dominique: Yes. Don’t put your dreams aside. Stay true to them. There’s no other way to follow your Dreams than to set goals and Do it. The time is now. We are all different, unique and special in our own right. Be your self and take a chance on “you” and the gifts that you know you have. If you don’t take interest in your gift, you can’t expect anyone else to do it. Just ask yourself “Why Not” and go for it. iaLoray was born and raised in Compton, California. Her close friends and family know her as Colette Bates. During the early part of her singing career she went by the stage name, Colette. Although she loves her birth name, it just wasn’t unique or catchy enough for her, therefore she combined her middle name, her father’s name and the nickname her niece calls her and came up with TiaLoray. She began singing in the church at the age of 8. She listened to and admired the styles of the older generation and would often mimic the sounds of Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and Tina Turner. These women, along with Gladys Knight and Erykah Badu, are some of her musical influences. She has always enjoyed entertaining people and being the center of attention. Her love and passion for singing grew each year and led her to follow her dreams and pursue a professional career as a singer and songwriter. Having the opportunity to perform with gospel legend Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Ali Woodson, of The Temptations, and Keith Washington opened the doors for her to do bigger and better things. TiaLoray later starred, alongside R&B music

TiaLoray “Life Changes” artists Howard Hewitt and James De Barge, in the gospel stage play “A Man That Finds a Wife Finds a Good Thing.” Her collaborations with artists such as Yo-Yo, Knocturnal, Mac Milly and TC put her on the west coast’s map for up and coming artist. While living in California, she regularly performed at several venues including The Conga Room, The Key Club, The Watts Festival and The Cellar. Destiny brought TiaLoray to Atlanta Georgia in 2011 with dreams of taking her career to another level. Since relocating, she has been on the cover of Finding Love Magazine and performed at several local venues including Apache Café, The Jett Lounge and Vinyl at Center Stage. Her debut album, Life Changes, is scheduled to be released late this summer, however, her hit single Wireless is in heavy rotation on Urban Soul Radio FM. She is rapidly building a fan base on the East Coast and continues to work extremely hard to become the superstar she’s always dreamed of. ■ For more information about TiaLoray or to purchase her music visit www.tialoray.com. Blame The Comic

here are many reasons to LOL!-Laugh Out Loud. However, when it comes to charitable causes, it is no laughing matter to comedians of the Sol-Caritas Movement managed by Carlos Wallace. Every second Wednesday of each month, comediansBilly Sorrells, Blame The Comic, Dave Lawson, Nnete[NaTay], Eddie B, Ken II, Archie Blaxx, Mickey Housley,John Gard, Stacy Anderson, Jerry Carrillo, April Slade Hamm, Terry Gross, Jennifer Jermany and Chase, only to name a few, perform at Houston’s IMPROV to host a sold out show stopper for charitable causes. Sol-Caritas [charity of all] donate funds to different charities within Houston and surrounding areas. The closest to [Carlos] heart is The Alice Wallace Foundation in honor of his late mother-an honorable teacher within the community she served. Wallace has made plans to recover the broken smiles of abused and battered women. “Comedy is therapeutic to the souls that have been broken by the men these women once trusted and love,” said Wallace. These women are in for a special treat of comedy with a charitable cause orchestrated specifically for them. Often times abused and battered women suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome. Fortunately, SolCaritas will relieve their stress, tickle their funny bone, and caress their hearts as they are humored with jokes told by comedians Billy Sorrels of BET and Rodney Bigham of Comic View and other fellow comedians. Aside from Sol-Caritas, each comedian has their own philanthropic endeavors. Blame’s “Keep The Kids Alive Foundation” mission is to provide food and medicine to international children in Africa suffering from illnesses due to HIV and AIDS. Blame is compassionate about his international outreach organization-“I only want to see the children have equal access to food and medicine as children diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the United States have. That’s one reason my comedy means so much to me. Each time I make someone laugh, I think

Billy Sorrells

about the children in Africa who are unable to laugh due starvation and health ailments from the epidemic,” He said with a sincere tone. The University of Houston graduate is on a charitable Sol-Caritas Movement with fellow comedians. Meanwhile, Billy Sorrells and Nnete support endeavors sponsored by Sol-Caritas, in addition, Nnete is a radio personality, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Soror, and Cum Laude graduate of University of Houston who devotes countless hours to the Boys and Girls Club and many other local charities when off air at Radio One’s KBXX 97.9 The Box-“The Mad Hatta Morning Show.” While on the other hand, Billy supports organizations he is most passionate about, “I don’t restrict myself to contributing to only one charitable organization. Therefore, I donate through Sol-Caritas Movement because we don’t give preference of one charitable organization over the next. I like that philosophy,” said the Texas Southern University graduate-who relocated to Los Angeles for taping of his exclusive comedy show featured on BET. Further, Rodney Bigham is zealous and dedicated to Cancer research, especially Colon Cancer. When he is not on the stage killing fans with jokes, he’s crusading for the fight against Colon Cancer and making others aware of the disease. He participates in the annual Colon Cancer 5K Walk hosted by MD Anderson Cancer Center. Bigham walks to confront the disease instead of masking its existence with silence. “Comedy is an outward expression of the hardships of life we are mostly confronted with such as diseases like Cancer. I’m a great supporter of making others aware of Cancer,” emotionally speaking after the disease affected a close loved one. Without a doubt, Sol-Caritas is a movement with charity of [all] things with no limitations and executing all boundaries to accelerate their movement to meet the needs of those who are less fortunate through charitable philanthropy. The comedy of SolCaritas is non- scripted and comes straight from the hearts of its comedians who deliver the performances at Houston’s IMPROV.■ For more information log on to www.sol-caritas.com. A Rising Star… FreeStyleSoul”… By Lisa Earley

hen I hear the word Trendsetter, I immediately think of “one who sets a trend.” With that in mind, I took some time to chat with a rising “star” in the music industry, “FreeStyleSoul”… Durand Bernarr. Although he has a style of his very own, he has been compared to the likes of Eric Benet & Rahsaan Patterson. To say I thoroughly enjoyed this candid, colorful conversation, would be an understatement. He has a unique blend of maturity and wisdom of someone in his 50’s, coupled with the playful spirit of someone in his 20’s. Listen to what this young man in his early 20’s, from Cleveland, Ohio, had to say… LE: What inspired you to pursue a career in the music industry? DB: My drive to do what ILOVE and to follow what has been instilled in me from a small child is what inspired me to pursue a career in the music industry. I grew up surrounded by musicians! My mother is a minister of music at church, a music director at a local playhouse, a music teacher, and vocal coach. My father is singer and musician as well, and he has toured with artists such as Barry Manilow, Earth,Wind & Fire, Whitney Houston and many others. So, music is in my blood! I don’t want to hate going to work every day… I want to wake up, and do what I love!! 46

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2012

LE: DB:

Who inspires your flavor/style? Erykah Badu, Brian Slade (formerly Tonex, the gospel artist), Chaka Khan, J*Davey, KOS (emcee), Phyllis Hyman, Prince and Sarah Vaughn.

LE:

Wow!! That’s quite a variety!! So who’s on your “playlist?” Adele, Amy Winehouse, Beyonce, Bjork, Brandy, Groove Theory, Kelis, and Little Dragon.

DB:

LE: DB:

Which musicians would you like to work with/collaborate in the future? Of course Erykah Badu… love her! Brandy as well… love her too!! Prince would be great to work with, and Quincy Jones!

LE: DB:

What was the last concert you attended? Foreign Exchange in May 2011.

LE:

So, Durand Bernarr… AKA “FreeStyleSoul”... how did you get started in the music industry? I just “put myself out there”…mainly on YouTube. I flooded YouTube with videos of me “doin’ my THANG”…singing!! I also went to open mics with live bands. Networking is key is this industry. Have some cards; get out and meet people and sing every chance you get! I was blessed… first Rickey

LE: DB:

LE:

What advice do you have for new artists who are unfamiliar with how the music industry works? Do your homework!! Research and read articles, books, use the internet, talk to people who are currently in the industry. I was very fortunate to have a mentor who was familiar with the industry, who gave me some guidance and direction. Share some of your “lessons learned” with us. Don’t procrastinate! Don’t waste your time, taking your time. Opportunities will pass you by! Put yourself in environments where you will gain exposure. Don’t be afraid to think “outside” the box! How do you see your music evolving (describe Durand Bernarr five years from now)? I’ve defined me… not others… “FreeStyleSoul.” I’m not limited to NeoSoul and R&B. I don’t want to be ‘boxed’ in… I want to explore different elements/ genres; it doesn’t matter. (In fact, Korn is my favorite band!) As long as I have a connection to music, I’ll do it!

DB:

LE: DB:

and through which vehicles? About 100! A little less than half I have released through bandcamp.com, and the others through Mediafire. So, tell us how fans can access your music and show you some LOVE?? Bandcamp.com has all the links to my pages, and you can download my music there: durandbernarr.bandcamp.com. Also, you can hit me up on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.

LE:

What do you want the world to think when they hear your name? DB: Integrity! I own up to everything that comes out of my mouth! I’m different… unique… an acquired taste…”FreeStyleSoul” sums it up!!

LE:

So… “FreeStyleSoul”…Durand Bernarr… it has been an absolute PLEASURE talking with you this afternoon! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with me, and know that we wish you continued success with your music career. See you at the Grammy’s, young brotha! PEACE ■

TRAVEL TRENDS

Become An Active Tourist in Your Hometown This Summer summer holiday celebrations and familybased activities, and best of all—many are free. When planning your family’s active tour, here are some suggestions that you may want to consider: Shop local. Use local, in-season ingredients to make healthy family meals. A trip to a lively farmers’ market or local farm can be a wonderful way to find inexpensive and fresh ingredients, and you can even burn a few calories picking your own produce! Set a family challenge. Provide your family with inexpensive pedometers and spend the day at a nearby museum or local attraction. Challenge your family to track their steps and provide a healthy incentive to the person who ends the day with the most. Enjoy healthy and refreshing sweet treats. Try your hand at fresh fruit Popsicles, or freeze your family’s favorite fruits, such as grapes or blueberries. Plan a healthy and fun family staycation. Find a few days on the calendar when you can turn time at home into an active “staycation” for your family—a vacation that doesn’t involve travel. (NAPSI)

I

f you are looking for ways to entertain your children this summer that don’t include sedentary activities like watching television or playing video games, consider becoming a “local tourist” in your own hometown. Vacations can be a great time to explore all that your hometown has to offer. Participating in nearby activities or events can be a great way to get your family off the couch, out of the house and on the road to becoming more physically active. Many cities and towns host summer festivals, farmers’ markets, outdoor concerts (with dancing), museum exhibits,

Let children add their favorite physical activity to the schedule and get the whole family moving.
