PUBLISHER’S NOTES

n positioning our business in 2013, we have created a new and more interactive website that businesses large and small will desire to advertise (www.trendtotrendmag.com). I would like to specially thank our design teams Lukeither Multi-Media & Design (lukeithermd.com) and DPI Graphic Design (dpigraphicdesign.com). I am also thankful for our newly hired Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Kenneth Prophet and everyone else who contributed their time and effort in assisting in this journey. It is great how GOD puts a vision in us to do the things that we need to do to become prosperous. We have to continuously believe in ourselves in order to exceed the levels of success that we set. We all have ideas and visions but most of us do not know what doors to knock on. If we do know the doors to knock on, we sometimes do not enter them correctly. This will not only sour the deal but will add discouragement to yourself and others affiliated with you. We need to keep close and near us those individuals that have already established the path to success. We need to not be jealous of the next person’s drive and favor, but build a strong relationship with those individuals so that we can implement the principles that GOD has placed within us. My vision is to build a successful media group compiled of businesses that will help enhance and complete the circle of success that I’m reaching toward. When it comes to business we need to put our personal differences to the side and drive forward. Ask yourself, where do I want my business to be at the end of 2013. Well, it’s simple, stay committed and believe that you have the products and services that people and businesses need to get to the next level. Stay focused and do not allow the negativity of others to cloud your vision. At the end of 2013, you will find that your business will be in a better position than it was last year. This concept will work if you believe in GOD and know that you will survive in 2013. God Bless ■

COVER STORY

By Beverly Hill (Shelley) y friend, Wanda Lopes-Colemon, is the mother of Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes. We have been friends for almost 20 years. I met Wanda in 1994 while standing in a line to pay car taxes. I struck up a conversation never knowing who she was. From that day on, we have been good friends. It has now been 11 years after the death of her famous daughter. Although I know Wanda’s story, she has allowed me an exclusive interview to share with you, for the first time, her life today after Lisa. It is my honor to share her story during this particular time (May)…which includes Mother’s Day and both of their birthdays. Lisa was a member of the singing group TLC with Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins and Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas. The group was one of the biggest-selling female R&B groups of all time. Their debut song was “Ain’t to Proud to Beg” in 1992 on their album On the TLC Tip. Their album Crazy Sexy Cool sold over 22 million copies after its release in 1994. “Creep,” “Waterfalls” and “Red Light Special” were all singles from the Grammy Award winning album. Crazy Sexy Cool was ranked 12

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2013

number 377 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. TLC’s next album FanMail sold 5 million copies and was the last album featuring all three of the original members. "No Scrubs" from the FanMail album became TLC's third number-one single and also earned them their second Grammy nomination for record of the year! Lisa ‘Left Eye” Lopes was born on May 27, 1971. She met with a very tragic, untimely death when her rented SUV careened off a two-lane road in La Ceiba, Honduras on April 25, 2002. This was devastating news not only to her family, but also to the world of TLC fans. Beverly Hill Shelley: You said you had a vision or warning of Lisa’s death, tell us about this. Wanda Lopes-Colemon: It was like a flash before my eyes and it was like Lisa was already in a casket. After a while, I thought it could be Lisa or Reigndrop (Lisa’s sister). I was wondering why I am seeing this. The vision stayed on my mind for a while. I never forgot it, but I dismissed it. I didn’t www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

really want to dwell on it. I had another clearer vision about a year later which was closer to the time of her death. With this vision, I knew who it was going to be…it was Lisa. The warning is what prepared me. I didn’t tell anybody, and I just kept it to myself. I didn’t want to give energy to something like that. I didn’t want to speak something that negative. It was that second vision that clarified who it was going to be. The visions never showed how Lisa would be taken, but I knew that it would not be by an airplane crash. I got a taste of how her death would happen, but I did not associate it at the time. When Lisa was in California with Shug Knight, she sent for our family for Christmas in 2001. We got in the car with Lisa, she dropped Reigndrop and Ronald (Lisa’s sister and brother) off at the movies, and she was taking me to my hotel. I don’t know why, but while Lisa was driving I couldn’t wait to get out of the car. It wasn’t like she was driving crazy but she was driving kinda fast, but not reckless. I couldn’t wait until Lisa dropped me off and I could get out of that car! I couldn’t wait to get back to the hotel. After I got there, I kept thinking about that feeling I was having and how weird it felt. I hadn’t put two and two together; I didn’t associate it with the fact that a car accident may be the way that Lisa would be taken. I think Tionne told me something like that too. She was in the car with someone and said she couldn’t stand being there and wanted to get out. She was feeling as if something was going to happen! I think that was a day before Lisa’s accident. Lisa was living in California but returned to Atlanta in January or February of 2002. She went to Jersey to close down her apartment and she brought her furniture to my house in Philadelphia. While there with me, Lisa was eating hoagies, Philly cheese steak and pizza (laughing), all the stuff she was no longer eating. She said she would cleanse when she got back to Honduras (laughing). It was like she wanted to taste everything, like it was her last time to taste those kinds of foods. She went back to Honduras at the end of March with the intentions of staying for one month, but that visit was short lived. Beverly: Wanda is a decorator and was hired to decorate viewing rooms at a local funeral home. I remember her painting the ceiling with lots of fluffy white clouds on a sky blue background. Who would have ever imagined that this would be the very room that Lisa would rest in? That particular viewing room was such a peaceful, heavenly looking place, a room fit for an angel (Wanda’s angel)…Lisa! Wanda: When I was decorating this particular viewing room, the thought came to me if any of my family members passed this is where I would want them to be laid to rest. I decorated it like the heavens. I felt like the deceased’s family would feel like their loved one’s spirit would be resting in a heavenly

place. I decorated 4 viewing rooms there, but this was my favorite. Beverly: Tell me about the documentary, The Last Days of Left Eye. Wanda: Lisa started going to Honduras in 1996 or 97. Once she discovered Honduras and Dr. Sebi, she wanted to document things. She wanted to share with everybody about the holistic lifestyle she was discovering. Lisa spent a lot of time in Honduras. She bought land and wanted to take artists down there to experience the new holistic lifestyle that she had discovered. While there, Lisa was also going to write a book titled “Open.” She was now doing things that she wanted to do. Beverly: In the documentary, Lisa speaks of her own premonition of death. Had she shared these feelings with you at anytime? Wanda: She knew that she was leaving, which confirmed my second vision that I had early in 2001. Lisa confirmed it that same year. I now knew it was definitely Lisa and not Reigndrop that I saw in the casket. The Lord assured me that her death would not be by an airplane. Lisa was working on a solo album titled Supernova. The album was to be released on her father’s birthday, August 16th 2001. One day I went to visit Lisa at her home, but her assistant would not let me disturb her. I was told that Lisa did not want to be disturbed by anyone for 3 days. She stayed in her room; strict instructions were given not to bother her whatsoever. After a couple of days I went back for a visit. I guess it must have been the 3rd day, because Lisa came downstairs from her room. I asked her what was going on, and she said that she missed her father. Lisa seemed a little different. She was glad to see me and told me that she had been meditating for the past 3 days. Her father was deceased, but she said that during those 3 days she was having talks with him and he seemed to be telling her that she was going to join him! Lisa and I were in the kitchen. She was looking kind of sad. I could tell that she believed what she heard her father say. We both were teary eyed, but neither of us said anything…it was like we both knew. When Andre, Lisa’s boyfriend, came into the kitchen, he hugged Lisa as if he knew what she was dealing with too. To me, this is what confirmed what I had already been shown. After this, Lisa started telling people that she was going on a long journey. I think she knew she was leaving, but she just did not know when. She had a desire to have dinner with her grandparents in Philadelphia. Her grandfather asked what her plans were, and she simply told him that she was going on a long journey. Lisa seemed to think that she would be released on her dad’s birthday, August 16th! Like the release of her solo album on that same date, she would also be released in death. COVER STORY

rather celebrate her birth rather than her death. Beverly: I know you miss your daughter, and you have learned to cope with the loss. What have you done personally to make life without Lisa more bearable?

Lisa in Honduras Beverly: There is a TLC movie (Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story) to be released soon. What are your thoughts and what would you like for Lisa’s fans to know concerning this film?

Wanda: It’s more like time, not what I have done. Just time passing, it has been 11 years now. It’s something you can’t keep dwelling on. You can think on it, but dwelling is not healthy. It’s something you’ll never forget. Losing a child is the worst feeling, and unless you’re a parent you’ll never know that feeling. It’s the worst thing that could ever happen to a parent. It’s just time. I know I’ve lost a lot of interest in a lot of things. My interests are slowly coming back…maybe because I am coming back to myself. Beverly: Do you still visit the gravesite, if so do you talk to Lisa?

Wanda: Our family had nothing to do with this film. I really don’t know what to say about it other than we (Lisa’s family) had no input. I don’t understand how a movie can be done without some input from me as Lisa’s mother. Everything told in the movie was by people that were affiliated with Lisa, not anything from our family.

Wanda: No, I went back to see the ledger that covers the grave which took a year for them to complete. After it was put in place that was the last time I visited. I know that her body is there but her spirit is not.

Beverly: In Honduras, the people erected a monument in Lisa’s memory. How was that decided?

Beverly: When God took Lisa, about 2 years later he gave Wanda the starting of a new life by giving her Taosai, her first grandson! He was born Nov 18, 2004. Did Taosai ease some of your pain and in what way?

Wanda: After the accident, Winston Hale, a writer from Florida, came to Honduras to write a story about Lisa’s activities and about the accident. He went to the Honduran mayor and told him what happened, who Lisa was and how she was helping the poor people there. Winston thought it befitting to have some kind of memorial erected, and the mayor agreed to it. The monument was erected on Lisa’s acreage.

Wanda: He eased all of our pain. It was like he came right on time. We all talked about that! Taosai was like a comforter in a way. My son Ronald (Taosai’s father) says he was like a stress reliever. His birth was welcomed. It was needed. We were so happy to have him!!

Beverly: What are some of the thoughts and emotions that grip your heart on the anniversary of Lisa’s death? Wanda: I don’t wanna think about it really…I don’t. I don’t just think about Lisa on the anniversary, I think about Lisa all the year. That date used to be worse than other days in the beginning. Its better now, but it’s very stressful. I have to divert my attention. I know that it happened on that day, so I try to keep myself busy. I think of Lisa every day, but that day makes me think more of the accident, and I don’t like that. That’s something I don’t want to remember. Beverly: Only 3 days separate your birthdays, yours May 24th and Lisa’s May 27th. Do you still celebrate or set aside time for Lisa on her birthday? Wanda: Ronald has been doing a memorial. He tries to have something on her birthday every year. This year her birthday falls on the day observed as Memorial Day. I remember that it’s her birthday and I might say, “I love you Lisa.” I would 14

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2013

Beverly: A year and a half later, Wanda was blessed with a second grandson, Elijah. I can imagine that they keep you busy! What things do you do with the boys? Wanda: I’m a young grandmother (chuckles). I wrestle and box with them; they love that (laughing)! We play baseball in their room with a rubber bat and a sponge baseball. I just love them being around. Just as much as I love being a mother, I love being a grandmother. Beverly: In what ways have your husband and children, (Quynton, Ronald and Reigndrop) encouraged and motivated you to keep going after Lisa? Wanda: Reigndrop and Ronald handled Lisa’s death by staying busy. Ronald said he had to be busy continuing Lisa’s work and keeping her memory alive. Reigndrop had some of Lisa in her all of the sudden. Now she is a rapper, performer and writer like her big sister. I was just in my own little world, and I did not understand why they were doing what they were doing. I did not realize that they needed that for their healing. I www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

just wanted to mourn and think about a lot of things. You go back to when you raised them, wishing you had done it better. I thought about times she was upset with me...a lot of thoughts going through my head. I didn’t want to be involved in anything the first and second year. It took a lot out of me. People were always saying how strong I was, but they had no idea. Even though I was prepared, it was still devastating. I know Lisa was popular but I didn’t want to continue with anything. Reigndrop and Ronald’s motivation helped motivate me. That’s what kept me going, reluctantly (chuckles). My husband Quynton doesn’t say much, but he was there for me. The first couple of years he gave me flowers on the anniversary of Lisa’s death. Beverly: Everybody grieves differently, what advice and/or words of encouragement would you share with a parent that has lost a child? Wanda: Tupac’s mom told me that she could feel my pain and she gave me her condolences. I would probably tell someone that lost a child the same thing Tupac’s mom told me, and I would also tell the parent to pray for God’s comfort and strength. Beverly: How do you want us all to remember Lisa? Wanda: Whatever Lisa did…a lot of things kids do are a result of their upbringing. I just want people to remember that everything that she did was a result of some of her surroundings when she was growing up. She had the determination to change her life, and that is exactly what she did. She always wanted to become an artist, and she did accomplish that. She wanted to change her life after she got tired of the smoking and drinking…and she did! "Dreams are hopeless aspirations, in hopes of coming true, believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you" was Lisa’s dream and she made that dream come true. Beverly: Wanda speaking with me concerning the details of the loss of Lisa forced her to revisit her pain. She told me that this interview opened up a can of worms, a can that she was now ready to close (chuckle). I thank my dear friend, Wanda LopesColemon, for allowing me to share her thoughts and feelings of her…Life After Left Eye. ■ Beverly Hill (Shelley), writer, lyricist Hits On The Hill© hitsonthehill.com

Innoss’B “A Musician and an Ambassador for Peace.” By Lisa M. Earley

hen we think of an ambassador, we think politics. Then we picture men (adults) in suits. That’s what we see on the news/T.V., so that’s the image that first comes to mind when we hear the word ambassador. We don’t picture a teenager being an ambassador. However, Innoss’B, a 15-year old singer/songwriter from the city of Goma in the eastern Congo, considers himself an “ambassador for peace.” Innoss’B (Innocent Balume’) was born and raised in a war torn community. He is a young man who sometimes feels he is carrying the weight of his generation on his shoulders. At the mere age of 15, Innoss’B, has seen so much in his country. The poverty and civil unrest in his homeland spans decades. Mainly centered in eastern Congo, the war (which involved nine African nations) has affected more than 50 million Congolese, and produced numerous civilian displacements. Innocent has seen what most adults here in America only 16

see on T.V. In fact, the last war on American soil was the U.S. Civil War, which was fought from 1861-1865. However, there is hope on the horizon in Africa. On February 24, eleven (11) African countries signed a peace deal, which is aimed at ending the decades of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Innoss’B started singing in 2002, at age 5, in his church. His older brothers, Achille, Fonkodji and Prince Aghakan, formed a singing group, and in 2003 he joined the group. Their focus was to “create music to ease people’s mind,” said Innoss. In 2010, Innoss’B was a contestant in the Vodacom Superstar competition at age 12, a show similar to American Idol in the Congo. He performed a cover of a Michael Jackson song, received over one million votes and he WON. Innoss’B won a recording with Akon (which is soon to be released). Because he is a celebrity in his country now, he can’t go about having a normal life anymore. However, he enjoys being a star! Innoss is working with top musicians to become “ambassadors for peace.” He and his brothers performed at “Heal Africa” with other artists, and this is just one of his efforts to promote peace in Africa. www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

YOUNG & TRENDY

Innoss’B and his brothers were in the states in March, working on collaborations with other artists, such as Akon and Ludacris. He has a library of over 30 songs written and produced with his brothers. “I want to be recognized internationally, because I feel we have some ‘good stuff’ to share with the world,” said Innoss’B. Recently, while in the states, Innoss’ B had an opportunity to meet Congo native, Dikembe Mutumbo. Mutumbo, a former NBA player, started a foundation in 1997 (with his personal money, to the tune of $19 million) to benefit his homeland. He is a man after Innocent’s own heart… a man who cares about humanity, and a man who cares about his native land.

When I spoke with this young man, I could feel his gentle, peaceful spirit through the phone. After the interview, I called his publicist and said, “What an awesome young man! I love his beautiful spirit!” She agreed, and stated, “That’s just who he is (smile).” Innoss’B, I wish you all of the success in the WORLD! But, whatever you do…. don’t lose that beautiful spirit. It shines through! Please follow Innoss’B on Twitter: @Innoss’B and on facebook: Innoss’B Real. You can also check out his music on YouTube. ■

“SOUL DOPE”

Q

amil (pronounced "Camille"), is an American vocalist, songwriter, published author, radio host, and CEO of her own independent label, Soul Dope Music. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Qamil's musical roots run deep as the niece of Norma Jean Wright, the former lead vocalist of the 70s disco and R&B band, Chic. Qamil developed a love for writing early in life. She penned her first short story at age 7 and was writing plays by the time she entered high school. In 2000, she enrolled at Denison University where she began to write music and perform around campus. During an eight year hiatus from the stage, Qamil authored and published two novels. Her first book, "Satisfaction" was released in 2010. In the fiercely dramatic and erotic story, she tells the story of four young African-American professionals and their respective journeys to claim the desires of their hearts. In 2011, Qamil published the eagerly anticipated followup, "More"--which proved to be a second dose of electrifying drama, exposed secrets, and sexy rendezvous. In turn, "Satisfaction” & “More" has been described as an immensely entertaining and thought provoking series.

Following the release of her novels, Qamil began to diligently pursue a career in music. She released a mixtape, D.O.P.E, and began to hit stages locally. It did not take long for her to capture the attention of promoters and new fans. In December of 2012, Qamil was invited to be the sole opener at two sold-out shows for national Neo-Soul artist, Dwele. Following her noteworthy performance, she released her debut album, SOUL DOPE, on January 1, 2013. SOUL DOPE is a creative blend of powerful and soulful vocals delivered over multi genres influenced production. Qamil not only displays her vocal chops on the project, but she also flexes her writing muscles by penning each track on the album.

In early 2013, Qamil established her own independent label, Soul Dope Music Group. Qamil, R&B/Soul singer Ray Woods, and rapper/producer Gameface are current artists on the Soul Dope Music Group roster. With an undeniable determination and hunger for success, Qamil is geared to take the entertainment world by storm. She is a woman of many talents who possesses a wealth of creativity, and a clear vision for the future. Keep your eyes open and your ears tuned, for Qamil is definitely a mogul in the making. ■

Breathe Easier This Summer: Tips to Control Your Child’s Asthma s the school year draws to a close and the temperature rises, children and families everywhere start to look forward to the simple pleasures of summer—jumprope, sunshine, playing ball, and cookouts. However, for the 1 in every 10 children in the United States who has asthma—including one in every 6 AfricanAmerican children, summer can also bring wheezing, coughing and trouble breathing. The joys of summer can be challenging if your child has asthma, a common but serious chronic disease. Summer’s long afternoons spent playing outside can expose children with asthma to triggers that can bring on attacks, such as increased pollen and allergens from blossoming plants and trees, and increased air pollution on some especially hot summer days. “While controlling asthma requires daily attention, your child doesn’t have to be sidelined,” said James P. Kiley, Ph.D., director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Division of Lung Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. “With proper treatment, most children who have asthma can avoid attacks, experience fewer symptoms, be physically active, and enjoy summertime.” To make sure your child doesn’t miss a thing this season, the NHLBI recommends that you work with your child's doctor and ask him or her to take the following key actions that can help your child—and you—breathe easier. • Tell you what medication your child needs to control asthma symptoms. Inhaled corticosteroids, taken daily, are the most effective medication for reducing the inflammation that causes asthma symptoms in people who have persistent asthma. • Give you a written asthma action plan that spells out

what to do every day to control your child's asthma, and how to handle symptoms or asthma attacks. • Check your child's asthma control at regular visits, and

adjust medication as needed to keep your child's asthma in control. • Schedule regular follow-up visits (at least every six

months). • Work with you to identify your child's asthma triggers,

such as allergens like pet dander and pollens and irritants like tobacco smoke, sprays and pollution, and talk about ways your child can avoid them. •Ask before you leave the doctor's office or pharmacy for someone to show you and your child how to use each prescribed medication and device correctly. ■

You can visit the NHLBI’s website http:// www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health /health-topics/topics/ asthma/ for more information, and to order publications from the NHLBI’s National Asthma Education and Prevention Program: So You Have Asthma, How Asthma Friendly is Your School?, Asthma & Physical Activity in the School, and a sample Asthma Action Plan.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

An Important Mineral for Healthy Hair Is Iron By Dr. Linda Amerson

It is estimated that millions of people in the United States suffer from iron deficiency anemia. The three most common causes of anemia are caused by iron, folate and B-12 deficiencies, as well as other causes. Anemia that occurs with iron deficiency is also called hypochromic microcytic anemia. Men may have anemia, however it is more common among teenagers and women who experience a monthly cycle. There have been reported cases were girls as young as 7, 8 and 9 years old have begun puberty. During consultations I have seen these hormonal changes in 7, 8 and 9 year old girls affecting the hair growth cycle. Parents should be aware that generations have changed and children are developing much earlier. How is anemia measured? Anemia is measured in a blood test. This test measures red blood cells, with the normal reference range being approximately 11.5-15.5, depending on the testing laboratory. Another iron test is serum ferritin. The average reference ranges of ferritin are 15-170, depending on the testing laboratory. Telogen Effluvium (excessive shedding), Alopecia (hair thinning), and/or hair brittleness and breakage may become prevalent if the range is below 12.0 or 70 in serum ferritin.

SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA INCLUDE: • • • • • • • • •

Cravings to chew or eat Ice Low blood pressure Cravings to eat Red Dirt Pale fingernail coloring Cravings for Sweets or Chocolate Cold extremities Dry hair Pale skin Telogen Effluvium

• • • • • • • • • •

Fatigue Hair thinning Shortness of breath Lassitude Dizziness or Fainting Headache Poor nutritional absorption Spoon-shaped finger nails Poor scalp circulation Eye change

How do you cure Anemia? Have your blood work checked and monitored by your medical doctor. Often times you will be required to take Iron supplements or given a B-12 shot if you are extremely lower than average range. Iron is easily digested by your body, however many women complain about a constipation side effect. Diet combined with iron supplements will help to resolve anemia. A healthy body promotes healthy hair and scalp. ■

FITNESS TRENDS

(BLACK PR WIRE/FAMU-TALLAHASSEE)

Health and Fitness on the Go Health and fitness mobile applications are a trend that is quickly growing as technology progresses. In today’s society, major companies have caught on to the trend of creating mobile apps for their consumers to use on the go. Emmanuela BienAime, a second-year history education student at Florida A&M University, said she is very familiar to health and fitness mobile apps. She has considered using several apps in the past to track her daily calories. “I started tracking my calories with an app called MyFitnessPal. I started using it at the end of August 2011 as a way to loose some weight,” said BienAime. MyFitnessPal is a free mobile app that is available on the Android Market. According to Myfitnesspal.com, “We believe — and medical studies prove — that the best way to lose weight and keep it off forever is to simply keep track of

the foods you eat.” BienAime said, “With this app, it makes me more aware of what I am eating and makes me feel guilty about eating foods that will take up my daily calorie intake.” Jakira Moore, a second -year biology student at FAMU, said she finds the Nike+ app very convenient. Nike+ is an app that measures and records how far a user walks or runs. Apple has it available on iTunes for $1.99 to help motivate users to walk or run in order to stay fit. “I have been using this app every year after Thanksgiving since 2010 to loose extra weight in time for spring break. It lets me know how far I run on treadmills and how much walking I may do while on campus,” said Moore. Health and fitness app users are able to get the motivation and guidance they need in order to live and maintain a healthier lifestyle. With these mobile apps they can take health and fitness pointers wherever they go. ■

COVER

"Stay in Your Lane: Judge Karen's Guide to Living Your Best Life." By Greta Wheeler

he first arrived on the scene in 2008 equipped with her burgundy robe, bold blond hair cut and vibrant personality. Not only is she known to lay down the law and set records straight by reminding people to stay in their lane as she clearly elucidate in her first book, “Stay In Your Lane: Judge Karen’s Guide to Living Your Best Life,” she is known by many as a compassionate individual. I am speaking of the two term Miami Court Judge, “Karen” Mills-Francis simply known by many as Judge Karen. Since her debut in September of 2008, Judge Karen found herself riding the roller coaster of Court TV productions. Facing not one, but two cancellations, Judge Karen grew concerned that her career in Court TV would be short lived. The first show, “Judge Karen,” made its debut in September of 2008, but was cancelled just after one season. Subsequently, just ten months later, the unthinkable in Court TV happened when Littman Productions reached out to her expressing their interest in reviving her show and in September of 2010, Judge Karen was back on the air. History repeated itself and “Judge Karen’s Court” was dropped after its first season. Judge Karen felt at that point that the odds were against her and attaining another show after the second cancellations was slim to none. Another unbelievable moment came for Judge Karen when she received a phone call from Fox asking her if she would be interested in doing a court show along with two other black female judges. She was elated. “This is how I know I’m blessed.” She says. She headed out to Los Angeles, along with the other two judges, to shoot the pilot. “They had to let us know by September 20th, last year rather they were going to pick up the show are not. So September 19th, I got a call that they were not gonna pick up the show.” The news came as a shock to Judge Karen for she was convinced within her heart that it was a done deal. “I said well, I thought this was God answering my prayers.” She states. All was not lost for Judge Karen and she quickly realized that the journey is not over when on the very next day after receiving the disappointing news she received a phone call from Entertainment Studios inquiring if she was interested in having her show back on the air. Two weeks later, Judge Karen was back in Los Angeles running camera tests and trying at least twenty cases. When they were done, she instantly received the news that her show received the green light and her new show, “Supreme Justice 30

With Judge Karen,” is set to air on September 16, 2013, but this time around, she won’t be wearing her burgundy robe. Judge Karen shared that many view her as a privileged person. But what many are not privy to, as she shared in her book, “Stay In Your Lane,” is that she had to go through much in order to see her dreams of becoming a lawyer and ultimately, a judge, realized. She experienced her lights being turned off, sacrificing one bill in order to pay another, and having a car repossessed. She has no problem letting others know that she was not exempt from hard times. “My whole life people have told me I was blessed and my feeling is that God puts me through a whole lot of trials and tribulations before I ever get my blessings.” She says. What helped her to make it through tough times in the past is her affirmation to herself that she will only think about God and thank Him for every blessing that she has for that day, therefore, not dwelling on what is not working, but instead, grateful for what is working. Judge Karen plants this seed of thinking into the hearts and minds of anyone who approach her with a heavy heart. Although she has been off of the television radar for a few short years, Judge Karen continues to stay busy. She has just recently returned from a 7-Day cruise with the Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage. While cruising the Atlantic and enjoying the islands, Judge Karen took the time to participate on a panel alongside six other women to address the issues concerning women of color in the corporate world in terms of promotion and leading a social life apart from the business arena. During the days after her address to the women, she shared how so many of them approached her to express how much her words encouraged and helped them. “But you know at the end of the day, that is what you hope to get out of stuff like this.” She remarks. For the past twenty plus years, since her first experience as a foster mother, Judge Karen developed a soft spot for foster children and later became involved with Casa Valentina, an organization that provide assistance to girls who have aged out of the foster care system. During her involvement with this organization, Judge Karen developed friendships with the foster children as well as families of foster children and has often had them over for sleepovers. There is one girl in particular that she developed a close relationship

with and Judge Karen has remained a constant in the young girls life. When she enrolled in college, Judge Karen was the person to drive her to the campus where she would be attending classes. When the young lady graduated college this May, Judge Karen, her mother and her grandmother attended the ceremony to support her. Judge Karen and her family were the closest thing the young graduate had as family to attend her graduation celebration. Although her show does not air until the fall, Judge Karen still has a few more stops to make. She is scheduled to appear at the Black Family Expo in Atlanta, Ga., which will take place on June 29, 2013. She is the keynote speaker. Judge Karen continues to spin her wheels of progress, as she is currently working on two new projects: a novel and a self-help book. It doesn’t take much to realize that Judge Karen is pretty hard to keep up with, for she is always in motion. But she does have a Twitter page, @My Judge Karen, and a Facebook account, Judge Karen . Anyone who wish to be encouraged, empowered, and inspired, by having Judge Karen as a guest speaker for an event may contact her publicist at reeder.rose@yahoo.com. ■

E. Roger Mitchell: “Don’t Ever Give Up” By Lisa M. Earley

For more information on E. Roger Mitchell, follow him on Facebook and Twitter @Erajj.

here are the ‘brothas’ in Hollywood?? (Meaning, where are the Black men?) Are they a dying breed in this industry? These questions are often posed, and I asked one of Hollywood’s rising stars {E.Roger Mitchell} the same questions. “Blacks played 15% of roles in film and T.V. in the early 2000’s. Today, it has fallen to 13%, and Black directors only make up 4% of the Directors Guild of America.” (The Hollywood Reporter) In the midst of what appears to be a fading presence of people of color in Hollywood, E. Roger Mitchell is fading to the foreground in film and T.V. E. Roger has truly been a ‘working-actor’ for the past 15 years, and he has focused his attention on developing his craft, instead of focusing on fame. “I’ve been in the industry for more than 15 years; nothing happens overnight,” said Mitchell. “You have to constantly reinvent yourself. It’s a process.” A Florida native, E. Roger Mitchell received years of formal training to develop his craft. He received his B.A. in English and Drama from Claflin University in South Carolina, and later pursued his acting training in NYC. Mitchell then went on to

earn a Masters of Fine Arts in Acting from CUNY Brooklyn (City University of New York). E. Roger recently played the role of a NTSB agent in Denzel Washington’s hit movie Flight, and he also played in the Last Exorcism: Part II (both are currently available on DVD). Mitchell will also play the role of Chaff in the movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which is scheduled to be released in November. He guest starred in several episodes of this season’s The Walking Dead as Paul, and appeared in an episode of ABC's hot new TV drama Nashville. Mitchell has worked alongside some of Hollywood's biggest stars, i.e. Will Smith & Matt Damon in Legend of Bagger Vance, Samuel L. Jackson & Colin Farrell in S.W.A.T, Aaron Eckhart in Battle Los Angeles, Idris Elba & Tyler Perry in Daddy's Little Girl, and Queen Latifah in Mama Flora’s Family. E. Roger’s talents extend beyond the big and little screens to the stage. He has performed in numerous plays, and most recently starred in August Wilson’s Two Trains Running, at Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre in Atlanta. The play was directed by Latonya Richardson Jackson (wife of Samuel L.) and starred Pauletta Washington (Denzel's wife). I asked E. Roger, “What are you most proud of as it relates to your career?” He replied, “I didn’t give up! Hollywood is a business…. that’s why it’s called “show business.” It’s a fickle industry—you can be really good at what you do and still not work. You can’t give up…..you have to be in it to win it,” Mitchell continued. We also have to show the industry that we spend our dollars in Hollywood too (to the tune of $20-30 million per year). In addition, you have to “create your own world; then you can put who you want in your world,” said E. Roger. Perhaps things will change in Hollywood, especially with more Black directors, producers, screenwriters (i.e., Rainforest Films, Shonda Rhimes, Tyler Perry) and actorsturned-directors/producers (i.e., Charles S. Dutton, Rockmond Dunbar, etc.) are being more proactive in producing their own movies, T.V. projects and plays. Time will tell. From my brief conversation with E. Roger Mitchell, I was reminded, you can do all of the right things in life, and still appear to come up short. However, if you “hold on, and don’t give up”…. your change will come. If you give up…. you will never know what could have been. Key ingredients to learning how to “hold on”: Determination~ Faith~ and Perseverance. ■ TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | MAY/JUNE 2013

The entrepreneurs met at the world famous Prudential Building in Boston, Massachusetts at the busy offices of Spice’s radio station. For what began as just a friendly, professional and plutonic relationship, a lunch date in historic Providence, Rhode Island forced the two to tell the truth about the love they were hiding inside. “Eric Moore: Uncovering Greatness” By Greta Wheeler His name may be unfamiliar now, but this young man has been groomed for wisdom since a very young age and set apart from his peers to be prepared for such a time as this. Born just thirty years ago on April 11, 1983 and raised by his mother in an impoverished, crime-infested neighborhood in Detroit, MI., motivational speaker, life coach, and Arthur, Eric Moore, decided as a youth that his start would not dictate his finish. While traversing his life’s journey, Moore is determined to accomplish a particular goal: to help reawaken the dreams that God has deposited on the inside of you starting with his book, “Living for Friday, Dreading Sunday Night: A Five Day Voyage to the Shores of Your Destiny”. At around the age of nine and ten, Moore recognized that he was different and found companionship and solace in, not those of his peer, but in the elders of his family, in particular, his best friend and the person whom he dedicated his book to, his Grandfather, Willie Moore (1919-2004). Moore shares that he was drawn to his Grandfather because of his wisdom. “My Grandfather, I looked up to him and he was such a wise man and he was so respected.” He says. Moore also spent the majority of his youth in church, where his motivational speaking commenced. “Whenever there was an opportunity to read a Bible

verse in church, I would always go to the smallest book in the Bible, which was the Song of Solomon. In my eyes, it was like a couple of chapters.” Moore shares. Inspired by the story of Solomon, Moore found that he too wanted to be wise and petitioned to God, like Solomon, for Godly wisdom. Now, thirty years later, Eric Moore is driven and primed to impart his wisdom into all who desires to exchange temporary happiness into a life time of joy by living a purpose driven life, which is the reason behind the title of his book, “Living For Friday, Dreading Sunday.” Moore shares that he has observed that a great number of people live for Fridays and dread Sunday nights throughout their adult lives. He expressed that too many people are placing their happiness on a shelf Monday through Thursday because they are working a vocation out of obligation rather then fascination. Moore realized that there has to be more to life then working a job simply out of necessity. His book, “Living for Friday, Dreading Sunday Night”, was written in the hope that it would help place those who wish to attain a life filled with purpose on the right path. “Sunday night doesn’t have to be the end all, be all of your joy.” He says. Moore aim to encourage and inspire others to discover what their God given dreams and to work towards achieving

those dreams. “I believe that God placed dreams in each of us and it’s up to us to uncover those dreams.” ■

My Walk is My Walk By Elle Woodz In order to accomplish goals that I had always wanted to do, I had to do things I had never done before and go places I had never gone. I had to dig deep within. Letting go of pain, heartache and disappointment were a must if I were to step forward. At the Age of 29, I was morbidly obese. After smoking for thirteen years and after receiving a diagnosis of sleep apnea at such a young age, I had to make some changes because I was a mother and a wife of two young children. Being overweight was a battle that I had been fighting my entire life. It wasn’t until I started to seek professional help I found the root to my overeating. As a child I went through the most horrific event that any young girl could face. I was sexually assaulted at the age of eight years old. It was so traumatic because it was from someone I had known to love and trust. I kept that bottled up on the inside for over fifteen years. I never opened up to my parents or siblings until just a few years ago. The way I dealt with that experience was through promiscuity as a teenager, overeating and seeking love from the wrong people. I had a lifetime of anger and pain. I was bullied in high school, which led to a suicide attempt in my freshman year due to severe depression. Because I had become a teenage mother at the age of nineteen, my plans for attending college had been deferred for many years. I was in a relationship where I was abused physically, mentally, and verbally. I almost gave up hope on life. I worked dead end jobs, lived in public housing, and relied on public assistance for five years with my two sons until I married and received my Associate's Degree in Business in 2009. As a newlywed, I became comfortable with my spouse and the pounds just kept adding on. I finally opened up to my husband about my child hood pain and past relationships. In order to heal and move on, I started to pray. I also wanted to get

healthy. Overall I wanted to cleanse myself from the inside out. I decided to lose weight by my thirtieth birthday to check off one of my many goals I had set for myself in my early twenties. I said to myself. I decided that if I could get a husband, attain two college degrees, and survive rape and domestic violence, then I could lose weight. I am a woman of God and I am strong! I decided to start “Operation Almost 30” a month before my 29th birthday in March of 2012. With the support of my physician, intermediate and church families, close friends and social networking circles, it was highly successful. I followed meal plans and exercised at least three or four days a week. My selfconfidence and self-esteem began to rise. I never knew I was a motivation to others until I began receiving emails asking questions about my meal plans and exercising routines. Someone told me that I was an inspiration to. Amazingly I responded to each person that wrote me. It was a blessing to be a blessing. I felt I began "a new walk, MY walk". Today, I am currently working on my Masters in Public Administration, married with two beautiful children and fifty pounds lighter. I am amazed at who God is and what He can do. I have learned to accept responsibility for some of the situations that I put myself in along the way and have chosen to walk forward with no regrets. I have learned to forgive those who have hurt me and because of that, success is for me and pain is not. I have a new attitude and positive outlook on life. Going forward I want to set an example for other women and be a voice for those going through pain from assault and violence. Each day I work closer to positioning myself in a way to let God use me. It wasn’t about the age or turning another year older, but for me, it was about the testimony. ■

You Can’t Have Me By Angela M. Thomas

I seek those things which are above. I set my affection on things above, not on things on earth. Colossians 3:1-2 I’m setting my affection on high above and making God the center of my attention. So don’t let the devil deceive you for one more moment. You are worthy to receive God’s unconditional love. Put the Word of God in your heart and in your mouth and get aggressive about doing the things you know to be right and pleasing to God. You can’t give anything to God without His giving you much more in return. When you set your attention and affection on Him, You will receive more than you ever thought possible. He will bless you, and bless you mightily. God is calling on us to remove the sin out of our lives. That’s why He is saying; repent, so I can manifest the Glory! It is sure power. It’s the kind of power that makes the devil pack his bags and get to stepping! So now is the time unlike any other to get the sin out! It’s time to let the devil know that he can’t have you and you’re not for sale. It’s time to clean house and make room, because the fire of God wants to come forth in your life! It really doesn’t matter how much you have messed up. The covenant that you have with God will always be there when you repent. The love that God has for us is not based on what we do and don’t do. It is an unconditional act of His will. It’s a matter of choice in God loving us and He chooses to love us like no other and there’s nothing you or I can do to change that. Just remember that you and I are the ones who will ensure the devil’s defeat in our lives. He can’t have anything that we don’t hand over and give to him without our permission. We have all the power we need to place him underneath our feet, and to forever kick him out of our lives. So stand up strong today. Make a decision today to set your affection on high above and make God the center of your attention. Walk in it! Stir it up! The rewards will be rich. Continue to place your attention on the Word of God, and you can fight the good fight of faith and win even when negative circumstances tries to overtake you. Faith in the Word will continue to keep you armed and dangerous to the devil. Faith will enable you to please God. We might as well face it. As long as you and I are on this earth, the devil is going to talk to us. He will continue to test our faith by bringing us circumstances, temptation, and lies to see if we will receive them. But when he does, it’s up to us to take a stand and refuse them. Just remember to say, you can’t have me! “The Lord is on my side. I will not fear! 2 Corinthians 10:5. ■

THE VERVE… By Kidada Kendrick

here are many words that can describe me as a person but only one word that expresses the authentic zest I have for fitness, health and wellness. The word I am referring to is “Verve”. Do you know what that means? Well, let me tell you. Verve means; enthusiasm or vigor, as in literary or artistic work; Vivaciousness; liveliness and animation spirit. Everything about this word is embodies who I am inside am working towards getting my BS in Sports and Recreational Management with a minor in business. In the near future I plan to own and operate a Family fitness facility specializing in wellness for children. I am not a professional, writer, instructor or doctor. I am the everyday average over weight person in America. (According to the data from the National Examination Survey, 2009-2010) “More than 2 in 3 adults are considerate to be overweight or obese. More than 1 in 3 adults are considered to be obese. More than one- 1 -20 adults are considered extreme obesity” (Overweight and Obesity Statistics March13, 2012) Do you know that 8 percent of women are considered to have extreme obesity? I am part of the 8 percent of woman that is considered extremely obesity. I would like to share my private battle of taking my life back. I will not hold back any punches or tell you any lies. I am willing to be totally transparent about my private weight loss journey because I hope to help someone reclaim their life back too. I am at war with myself; I am in a battle to save my life. To protect, honor and care for my Temple. It all started in November of 2012. I was going through a deep depression because my life was overwhelming at the time. I am a single mother of two wonderful children. I was struggling finically, physically, mentally and spiritually. I was in a deep dark place in my life. By the beginning of February this dark place became my safe heaven away from reality. It became enticing, habit forming, addictive, medicated, and destructive. I stopped exercising, eating healthy, cooking, caring, praying and loving myself. I became a hermit cut off from the world around me. I became an emotional eater. I was trying to mask the past feelings of pain, hurt, shame and defeat. I was consistently eating Oreo’s, fast food, chocolate, processed foods and pizza. This became my every day diet. I knew in my heart I was wrong but I cared less about my destructive behavior. All I cared about was my momentary fix of happiness. In the month of February I began to notice that I could no 42

longer fit my undergarments, clothes or shoes. I still dismissed this and I made a random excuse about why my clothes weren’t fitting. It took three separate occasions to snap me back into reality. The first time was when I had a lunch date with my daughter at school and I brought her pizza for lunch. I will never forget how happy and proud of me she was; sitting there eating with me. I remember her look of gratitude and appreciation because I was there, until someone asked…” Is that your mom?” Wow she is fat”said a little boy. Now, I am not use to hearing someone describing me as fat because I stayed in great shape all my life up until I had my first child and that is when I discovered what it felt like to be considered fat. When my daughter came home that evening she told me that other children were saying that too and they were teasing her about me. She asked me to “NEVER” come back to her school because she was so embarrassed. Second, my friend decided to send me a picture that I took back in July, 2012. This was a picture I took before I stopped going the gym. I was mesmerized by the image that was staring back at me. She was thinner, cuter, sexier and happier. Where did she go I wondered? Can she make a comeback? Finally, at the end of the month I notice an odd feeling of pain in my lower back area and on the right side of my body. It took me three days before I went to the doctor, it was this defining moment that I did a 180 in my life. It was during this visit that I learned I was 275 pound, my blood pressure was high and I also had a kidney and bladder infection. I was killing myself day by day by simply lifting food and surgery drinks from my hands to my month’ I looked at myself in the mirror at the hospital for the first time and I saw a different person staring back at me. She had rolls on her neck, rolls on the sides, dimples in her leg and arms that swayed in the wind. I went home and made a conscience decision then and there I was going to change my life and I have! I changed my eating habits two months ago. I now eat “clean”. I exercise every day except Saturday. I work out twice a day Monday through Friday and once a day on Sundays. I do a variety of group classes which may include; Cycling, Weight training, body conditioning, Interval training, Sports plus classes, Turbo kick, Yoga and Water aerobics. I train hard every day. I pretend like I am competing against myself and I aim to beat me!. My life has changed dramatically over the last three months. I have lost a total of 26 pounds in 7 weeks. It is because of my self- determination, will power, God, consistency, persistence and my inner desire to www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

succeed by any means possible. I realize that others people watching me I may appear be a bit obsessive now about exercising and eating healthy. It is not for everyone to fully understand because they have not walked in my over sized shoes. When a person gets tired of being tired, they will either stay the same or make drastic changes. I got tired of feeling bloated. I got tired of not fitting into my clothes. I got tired of overeating, under or oversleeping. I got tired of being depressed. I got tired of learning how to cover up and over dress the fatter me! I got tired of my lower back, ankles and knees hurting me. My life, myself esteem, my health, my body and my mental state was fully and indirectly impacted by weight! I do not define myself by the number on the scale but by the quality or lack thereof living my life to the fullest! I woke up from my horrible nightmare three months ago and I am going hard to take my life back! I refuse to be Overweight! I refuse to be in the obesity category. I refuse to hide my body under clothes because I am ashamed of my body. I refuse to take meds for depression when working out lifts up my mood! I may want this worst then the average person but that's because it is a war against me!! If you think I am obsessed and driven in this area...Well you are right! I WANT TO LIVE, I WANT MY SEXY BACK, I WANT TO BE HEALTHY AND HAPPY... I WANT TO BE COMFORTBLE IN MY OWN SKIN; I WANT TO LOOK SEXY IN MY THONGS FOR MYSELF AND HUSBAND. To be honest with you, I WANT IT ALL!! Losing weight is not easy...you have to bring your A game...I want to change and I will change... SO I WILL ACCEPTED BEING OBSESSED...any day over BEING LAZY, DEPRESSED, FULL OF SELF PITY, SELF HATE, and STAGNATE. I want it as bad as I need to breathe. How bad do you want it? â–

By Glenda “China” Scott

Divas Unlimited, Inc. rolled out the red carpet for some of the most prestigious trendsetters in Atlanta at their 2nd Annual InfluenceHER Awards ceremony held on May 9th. I was excited to attend the event as it recognizes remarkable women who demonstrate outstanding leadership and have the ability to ignite social change within their communities. The InfluenceHER Awards Ceremony was launched in 2011 to recognize and celebrate diverse and phenomenal women on the move within their distinguished fields. The Honorees for 2013 were: Carla Morrison - Founder of “Sisters of Today & Tomorrow” (SOT) whose mission is to raise the consciousness of women and children through innovative programs that focus on self-esteem, education, health & fitness and careers/ entrepreneurship. Carol Blackmon - Radio personality at Majic 107.5/97.5 with more than 20 years in the industry. Dr. Rogsbert F. Judi Cohen Wade - Chief Executive Officer at Macgregor Carson Consulting and accomplished digital and broadcast media executive consistently recognized as a highly motivated team leader in her field, a respected colleague and a compelling influencer. Rashan Ali - Multimedia personality within the sports and entertainment industries and founder of Sporty Girls, Inc., which cultivates, enriches and challenges young women to participate in non-traditional sports, while developing and fostering lifestyle skills. Terri J. Leona Barr-Davenport – President and CEO of the Atlanta Business League working to provide increased access to business opportunities for minorities. Palestine A. Ace – Senior Vice President/Senior Marketing Advisor for Bank of America – committed to her community and maintains a strong presence in supporting young people through WEATOC (We’re Educators A Touch of Class) whose mission is to elevate young people beyond their circumstances and surroundings and to equip them to move forward towards their dreams and limitless potential. As I listened to the 2013 honorees making their acceptance speeches, it was evident that these women not only inspire and influence many individuals, but they all clearly share a committed passion for the overall success of everyone around them. Each of these women lead by example and share what comes naturally for them…motivation, support, and encouraging a positive self-image to increase the quality of life for others. And it was more than appropriate to recognize them for their leadership, direction, motivation, and inspiration to us all. The hosts, guests and presenters of this year’s InfluenceHER Awards ceremony were among the elite. CEO of Kingdom Klothes & Kindom Koutour, Beth BordenGoodman; Psychologist and relationship expert, Dr. Alduan Tartt; Hells Kitchen Chef, Jason Ellis; former NFL player Dorsey Levens; Podiatrist/The Doctors TV Show Rondrick “Dr. Ron” Williamson; CNN Money Contributor Clyde Anderson; Executive General Manager at Arrow Records Cappriccieo Scates; a surprising performance by the spectacular actress, entertainer and vocalist Ann Nesby; the wonderful Kiss 104.1 radio host Art Terrell, who gladly took the mic with his mesmerizing voice and captivating personality; and finally, the astonishing poet and author

Hank Stewart, who engaged us with his invigorating poem “Diva” which took my intellectual senses to a new level. Although this event was focused on the influential woman, there was also a direct call to men that women are flowers and should be given fertilizer to help them grow, and each man must influence the woman in his life to reach her potential. Rhonda Wilkins, Dora Dina-Durant and the entire host committee of Divas Unlimited, Inc. did a fantastic job of selecting and recognizing the 2013 women of influence. Special thanks went out to the event’s 2013 beneficiary the March of Dimes. In summary, I ask the question: are you an influenceHER? We as women must maintain our passion to influence, and touch the hearts of individuals around us. Use the abilities that you possess along with your voice, your eyes, and your touch to inspire others to dare to dream. Be a role model, realizing that the quality of your influence may touch the heart of an individual in need. As we live, work and play day by day let each of us challenge one another to share the knowledge we possess to influence individual growth and the advancement of our communities.

Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) award-winning African-American consumer campaign My Black is Beautiful (MBIB) brought its message to the masses through film with the premiere of the Imagine a Future documentary in association with Tribeca Film Institute this past Sunday, April 21st in New York City. In partnership with UNCF and BLACK GIRLS ROCK!, MBIB hosted an intimate screening of the Imagine a Future documentary for prominent film industry influencers and distinguished guests, offering them a first look at the film that examines beauty and self-esteem issues that challenge black women and girls. Imagine a Future marks MBIB’s inaugural foray into the film space and serves as a tangible tool aimed at inciting a dialogue around beauty amongst African-American women and driving them to action. The seven-year MBIB campaign was launched with the goal of fueling a national conversation about black beauty while encouraging women to become catalysts for change in their local communities. Since its inception, My Black is Beautiful has developed a successful and engaging online and offline community and has celebrated, empowered and connected gen48

erations of black women everywhere by championing their desire to express their best and most beautiful selves. In 2012 MBIB took its mission a step further by enlisting the support of community organizations BLACK GIRLS ROCK! and UNCF to launch an initiative aimed at positively impacting the lives of one million black girls over three years. The initiative, entitled “Imagine a Future,” documents the current state of black beauty, provides an in-depth look at the influences of young black girls, and equips the community with tools and solutions such as scholarships, leadership camps for teen girls, online consumer interactive tools, and the Imagine a Future documentary. “As a natural evolution of the MBIB mission, we were happy to work with UNCF and BLACK GIRLS ROCK! to launch the “Imagine a Future” initiative last year and we are excited to take our work a step further by providing the community with a documentary that is both powerful and informative,” said Associate Marketing Director, NA Media and Multicultural Marketing, Lauren Hoenig. “Our hope is that this documentary will aid in altering the current perceptions, conversawww.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

Well-Meaning Charity Gives Homeless Women...Makeovers By Katy Kelleher women's center in L.A. has made the news for their attempts to make homeless women a little easier on the eyes. I'll just say it right now: I hate makeovers. I hate the whole idea of makeovers. I hate it when movies feature a makeover montage, with the heroine emerging victorious at the end with better hair and smaller clothes. I hate the idea that good makeover has the almost god-like power to transform a woman, inside and out. I hate department store makeup counters and their over-zealous staff. I hate the pressure to be constantly changing my looks, emerging a butterfly again and again from my hideous cocoon, while the men in my life get to schlep about in the same pair of sweatpants and sneakers they always wear. Though I sometimes love makeup, I hate being made over, as though what was there before is just no longer gonna cut it. Okay, so I sound pretty bitter. But I feel like I should admit my deeply-rooted hatred before going on to say this: the Glamour Project is really, really heartwarming. Upon reading the headline, my first thought was to question whether homeless women really need makeovers. Surely there is something more significant - and less shallow - that they could be doing for these women. Yet the Glamour Project, as silly as it initially may seem, provides something far more important than makeup: personal attention. The Glamour Project website describes their dedication to bringing out "hidden beauty" and "improving the lives of disadvantaged women through kindness, compassion and photography!" (exclamation mark theirs). While there is a part of me that remains critical of such an enterprise, the end product makes up for everything I don't like about the concept. They aren't actually giving them a new look, they're reminding these women that they matter, that they are still visible. Though being physically visible may sometimes feel oppressive, it is also absolutely necessary (and being invisible is infinitely worse). tions and societal implications that come with negative self-image and low self-esteem of young black girls. Through the “Imagine a Future” initiative and partnership with organizations UNCF and BLACK GIRLS ROCK!, P&G continues to reinforce its long -standing commitment within the multicultural space and desire to facilitate a community wherein black women everywhere can change the conversation and help us create a beautiful future for young black girls.” Directed and produced by Lisa Cortés, Academy -Award nominated for Precious, directed by Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners director, Shola Lynch, and executive produced by BLACK GIRLS ROCK! founder and NAACP Award winner Beverly Bond, Imagine a Future follows the story of Delaware teen Janet Goldsboro as she travels to South Africa to examine the historical and present beauty and self-esteem issues that challenge black women and girls. Infused with the perspectives of renowned media personalities such as Mikki Taylor, Gabourey Sidibe, Michaela Angela Davis, Tatyana Ali, Gabrielle Douglas and Melissa Harris-Perry, their stories compliment Janet’s journey of self-discovery by focusing on black beauty insecurities and examining the images of black women in the media. “Janet’s story is one that is prevalent in our community, and many young black girls can relate to her beauty and self-image issues,” said Lisa Cortés, Director and Producer. “It was an amazing experience capturing her journey as she traveled to South Africa to explore depictions of black beauty throughout history. My hope is that through sharing the stories of the individuals in this film, we are able to impact the lives of black women and girls and help change their perceptions of black beauty.” The Imagine a Future documentary will air on BET on July 5, 2013 at 10 PM ET/9 PM CT and on Centric on July 6th at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT. The film will also be available for online viewing on the My Black is Beautiful YouTube channel. Viewers are encouraged to learn more about the “Imagine a Future” initiative and join MBIB in changing the conversation by visiting myblackisbeautiful.com and facebook.com/MBIB. There, the community will be able to download an informative Imagine a Future discussion guide that will provide insightful information to fuel conversations and engagement and aid MBIB in achieving its goal of positively impacting the lives of one million black girls over the next two years. BET Awards: Hosted by Chris Tucker

Mary Mary Nominated for Best Group and Best Gospel Group Charlie Wilson will receive the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award

In downtown Los Angeles, BET announced the nominees for its annual awards show, bringing out host Chris Tucker as well as artists Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, Charlie Wilson and Tamar Braxton to assist in the festivities. Top nominees this year include Drake with 12 nods; Lamar and 2 Chainz with 8 nominations; and A$AP Rocky with 5 nominations. Dubbed the “Black Super Bowl,” the awards ceremony will take place on June 30th in L.A. as part of the first ever BET Experience, a three-day weekend of concerts, comedy shows, and film screenings. “I love BET,” Lamar said at the press conference. “I’m excited to be nominated for my first BET awards…I’m still fairly new at this thing right here, so receiving an award of any caliber means a lot to me.” Lamar’s nominations include Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Best New Artist and Video of the Year. Additionally, he will be performing on Saturday night at the Experience alongside other star talents like Miguel, J. Cole, Schoolboy Q, and Snoop Dogg. “I put a lot of hard work and effort into [my work], so for it to finally manifest into what it needs to be, I’m excited about it,” the 25-year-old rapper commented. “I really just look forward to the

energy of everything. We’re going out there and having fun, looking at the people out there that appreciate my music that got me to this level. So, to bring my boys out there to share that love, that’s a beautiful feeling.” Meanwhile Chris Brown, broke news about his upcoming album, X, and a top-secret collaboration for the project. I just shot a video, and the song is dedicated to all my fans, but it’s called ‘They Don’t Know,’” he explained. “This song features Aaliyah, and neverbefore-heard vocals, all new stuff.” Due in July, X features Brown’s previously-released singles “Fine China,” and “I Can’t Win,” and was inspired by soul artists like Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, and Aretha Franklin. Along with the album, the new video marks an attempt by the 24-year-old to reform his image (again). “I shot it in the hood,” he said. “I’m about bringing both worlds together in the video, and trying to uplift the poverty side of the community. You know, I’m from Virginia, but everybody come from a broken home.” A 9-time BET-Award-winner, Brown was the first announced performer for this year’s award show, and will take the stage with R. Kelly at the ceremony. He says his goal is simply to please his fans. “I’m just trying to uplift the black community,” Brown commented. “I like to

do over-the-top stuff as far as theatrics and imagination and being creative. I want to bring something new and original.” Mary Mary was also named among the nominees in two categories including Best Group and Best Gospel Group. Also being honored at the BET Awards, R&B soul legend Charlie Wilson will receive the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award. “It kind of scares you when people start giving you Lifetime Achievement Awards, because it sounds like people are trying to get rid of you,” he joked. Keeping the superstars in line will be host Chris Tucker, who asked to be paid upfront at the conference, teasing, “You gotta get paid first to do the BET Awards.” Tucker said, “I’m happy to do it, this is my first time. I love music. I’m excited about it. Anything could happen. I might not even show up.” Tapping into the energy of the annual celebration, BET President Stephen Hill described the forthcoming BET experience as a “humongous, colossal epic series of events and concert.” Additional performers at the experience include Beyoncé, New Edition, Erykah Badu, and Mike Epps. Hill calls it the “biggest multicultural and multiplatform, 360 degree experience in the history of BET.” ■

“There’s Nothing Better Than Doing What You LOVE.” By Lisa M. Earley

Jeffrey Osborne

P

icture this…. a 16-year old girl singing into a makeshift microphone, pressing repeat, and after the 20th time (yes, I said 20), her brothers are screaming from the next room, “Lisa, pleeeeeease stop playing that song. Good grief!!” Sorry, guys… but that is how Jeffrey Osborne’s hit song We’re Going All The Way moved me. Just in case you couldn’t tell…. I loooooved that song! Born and raised is Providence, RI, Jeffrey was the youngest of 12 children. He grew up in a family of music lovers… particularly jazz and standards. His father was a trumpet player, and he played with notables such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. But Jeffrey’s father knew that life on the road with these famous musicians wouldn’t be ideal for his family, so he chose to stay in RI and work a traditional job to feed, clothe and house his wife and children. Jeffrey admired his father, Clarence “Legs” Osborne, who died when Jeffrey was just 13-yrs old. He was an incredibly talented big-band trumpeter, who sacrificed his music career for his family. Jeffrey loved his family as well, but he desperately wanted to explore the world of music and see where his love for music would take him. The young Mr. Osborne started off playing the trumpet, like his father, but after his father’s death, he switched to playing the drums. At age 15, he played the drums with the O’Jays (just before they became famous) for two weeks. To this day, Jeffrey and Eddie Levert still laugh about those good ol’ days . In 1969, while attending a Love Men Ltd. performance, Jeffrey filled in for their drummer (who found himself in a bit of a quandary that evening), and shortly thereafter signed a contract with the group, and returned to L.A. with them. The group changed their name to LTD, which they explained those initials stood for Love, Togetherness and Devotion. During the 70’s, Osborne transitioned from being the group’s drummer to the lead vocalist. After 11 years with LTD, and some work with Smokey Robinson, Osborne decided to branch out on his own, and launched his solo career in the early 80’s. Jeffrey’s mother was always his biggest cheerleader. She gave him the inspiration to follow his dreams. “I credit my mother for my successful career; she taught me to believe in myself, and that’s where it all started,” said Osborne. Although Mr. Osborne is a talented musician, there is an-

other side to him. He is a public servant. His philanthropic efforts are currently serving the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School and the MET School (to put music back in the schools as alternative learning). In addition, he raises funds for the Amos House (which takes people off the street and trains them in areas like carpentry) and Boys & Girls Club of Providence. Jeffrey is hosting the Providence, RI, Golf Tournament, August 12 & 13. He is slated to perform on the Soul Train Cruise in October, which is leaving out of San Diego, and Jeffrey will be hosting another golf tournament in Puerta Vallarta during that cruise. (For additional information, please visit www.SoulTrainCruise.com) When I asked Jeffrey about advice he would give people interested in pursuing a career in the music industry. He said, “You have to be true to yourself ~You have to make sacrifices ~Make sure you surround yourself with people who won’t lie to you ~Always remember, there’s nothing better than doing what you love.” Osborne’s most recent project, A Time for Love (released in January), is something Jeffrey always wanted to do. He wanted to broaden his audience, and take on classic love songs and pop standards. To accomplish this task, Jeffrey tapped the legendary George Duke to lend his expertise to this project. These two gentlemen, who have created some of the biggest hits in the history of R&B, have reunited after 30 years. Duke is one of the greatest jazz and R&B producers of all time, and Jeffrey was beyond pleased with his contributions to this project. “What can I say about George…. he is incredible!” said Osborne. Jeffrey is currently touring the country, singing his old hits mixed with the new, and this Grammy-nominated vocalist has still “got it!” To find out when he will be in a city near you, or purchase his music, visit www.JeffreyOsborne.com. I can’t wait to see Mr. Osborne in concert, soon! Of course I’ll be singing right along with him, because I know most of the words to most of his songs (you would think I wrote them~ smile). You know I’ll be waiting for my favorite song…. and I’ll think back to those fond memories of my teenage years, singing and dancing to Jeffrey Osborne’s music in my living room. ■

Which do fliers fear more: Crying babies or smelly adults? By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY

Airline passengers say they'd rather sit next to a crying baby than a smelly adult. That's just one of the findings in a new Harris Poll that looks at how fliers who take at least one trip a year feel about certain perks and annoyances when traveling. "Travelers have been dealing with increasing airline prices and add-on fees for the past few years," Mike de Vere, President of The Harris Poll, says in a release. "We wanted to find out which amenities people were willing to open up their wallets for, and discovered that while many consider added comfort and entertainment to be worth shelling out for, nearly two in five would give up personal boundaries to avoid carry-on baggage fees." Despite gripes about add-on charges, 58% of those surveyed in the Harris Poll claim they'd be willing to pay extra for more legroom on flights of three hours or more. That number falls to just 33% for flights of two hours or less. As for those "personal boundaries," 50% of those surveyed said an annoying, talkative seatmate would be worthwhile trade-off if it also came with more room to stretch out. Sixty-three per-

cent say a stinky adult would be a more off-putting seatmate than one holding a crying baby. And more than a third (39%) of those surveyed say it'd would be preferable to let a stranger fall asleep on their shoulder during a flight than to have to pay the airline a fee for carry-on bags. Elsewhere, when asked about to name the two "most important amenities" when flying, 53% say snagging a window or aisle seat was a priority while 35% mentioned "extra legroom." And more than half (55%) say they'd rather have free WiFi than free TV or movies on a flight. And for all the airlines hoping their multi-billion dollar orders for new aircraft will help sway customers, only 37% of those in the Harris Poll say they'd be willing to play more for flights on newer planes. The Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States between March 13 and 18 and focused on Americans who say travel by commercial airline once or more per year. The complete results and polling details can be found at the Harris Interactive website. ■
