DREAM THEORY: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE From "California" dreaming at the beginning of 2020 - so sure that "this will be my year" - to being scattered across the globe, in the isolation of your bedroom, dreams disrupted. Or perhaps not? What were your dreams Before? What are your dreams Now? What have you been enjoying in between? What have you discovered - about yourself, the world, interests? Have you reverted back to your childhood likes? Or reevaluated your plans for life After? Have you somehow felt rejuvenated? Dreams are subjective. Some people's dreams are scarier and more vivid than others', but they give our lives purpose, meaning, and direction. Without a community, we might feel confined, and our values cease to mean anything. Without control, we might feel powerless to pursue anything. Rather than limiting our scope of creativity and isolating ourselves from the rest of the UCSD creative community during a time when we are already isolated enough, we brought the community back together by sharing our creative endeavors in one place. We hope that these stories and moments from our Trend members and UCSD creatives will inspire you to keep dreaming. To our Trend family, thank you for your constant hardwork and dedication. There is so much talent and passion that allows our ideas to unfold into an issue. Although this organization has shifted to completely virtual interactions, your ability to adapt and tackle any situation contributes to why we love to create in the first place. To our readers, whether you’ve followed us through social media or stopped by our table on Library Walk, thank you for the endless support. You are the motivation behind Trend. We hope that you will keep your dreams alive, no matter if they’re in the past, present, or future. Love, Tatiana & Macy

dreaming forwards and backwards written by: Megan Huang

8 | Dreaming Forwards and Backwards

I realized that we are the best dreamers as children because we are not afraid of what’s ahead.

I began the year, 2020, as I always do with the same thought that I always think of after welcoming a new year: I hope that this year will be better. I never really specify how or why I hope that the new year will be better. I never elaborate on what went wrong the year before. I only care about looking forwards and rarely ever looking back, unless needed. And it was with this routine that I entered into my second to last winter quarter at UCSD. About three months later, the US was launched into a pandemic with the rest of the world. As a result, routines were broken left and right. I returned home for spring break and have yet to step back onto campus. With each passing day of 2020, I realized that I had something that I had only been yearning for before the pandemic. Time. Time to think, time to breath, time to reflect. All of a sudden, my world, my life, in a way, went on pause. I welcomed the change in pace. It was as if the world had answered my prayers and allowed me to be in an environment where I could becomfortable as I pondered my future plans.

I found myself doing something that I rarely afforded myself the time to do before the pandemic: looking back. I started remembering dreams, desires, and memories from my childhood. It was during these times that I remembered what it was like to truly dream. To dream of something bigger, greater than who you are in the present. There were no boundaries, no boxes. As a result, I realized that we are the best dreamers as children because we are not afraid of what’s ahead. But what really makes us powerful dreamers as children is the ability to admit all of who we were in the past and all of who we are in the present. Once we allow ourselves to see ourselves in full, any walls that we thought were caging us in becomes a staircase, a foundation that allows us to go higher and farther with our abilities. Dreaming is a process. We are not always afforded the luxury of having all opportunities and skills at our disposal. As a result, we must constantly revise our plans to fit what we have in the present, so that we can obtain what we want in the

future. However, with revision comes reflection. We must not only know what we have, but we must know what we still need, in order to move forwards. In life, we often get swept up into the chaos that surrounds us. We keep heading forwards because we believe that we are too busy to look back. That looking back will only distract us from our goals. However, looking back, oftentimes, tends to be the solution to our problems. The solution to get out of ruts, so that we can continue forwards, more smoothly. This is because looking back grants us the privilege of remembering. Remembering why we are where we are currently, and why our dreams and goals are what we are chasing after. From now on, I will not only look forward to a brand new year; I will also look back at the previous year to remember how far I have come. Because even though looking back may involve taking two steps backwards, it may help us find the clarity required to take twenty steps forwards. To reach our dreams, we must dream forwards and backwards.
