rom January to March each year, Samana offers one of the best attractions mother-nature has to offer: the coming of the humpback whale. To watch these magnificent creatures roaming freely in the bay´s warm waters from the vantage point of small crafts is an incredible experience, but unfortunately more and more common we hear people saying “this is boring”, or “we only got a glimpse of the hump” or “we didn´t see them jump, not even once”... In this media era we live in, we´ve become blasé about the incredible images of exotic locations around the world we see on a daily basis through movies, ads, documentaries, social media, and it´s like we are subconsciously visiting these places. Some might even think it´s not worth travelling anymore because, most of the time, the reality we see, hear, smell, what´s ingrained in our memories, could never compete with the audio visual images we are bombarded with every day and we tend to forget that these beautiful images took weeks, months and even years of filming by professional teams waiting for the ideal conditions. At the click of a button we have all the information in the world at our fingertips and this makes us feel like we don´t need to experience or try it firsthand. We live in a world where everything is fast tracked, where the show is important and it must be perfect. If we travel somewhere we need to see everything there is to see and the success or failure of a trip depends on whether the whole experience lives up to our expectations. Even though we have no cathedrals, or museums or historical ruins here, there are enough reasons to visit Las Terrenas. We have miles of unspoiled beaches, warm crystal clear waters with excellent coral reefs, infinite stretches of sandy coves shaded by coconut trees offset by the faded colors of fishing boats and haphazard food stalls with their bright umbrellas and deck chairs. We have rivers, cascades, picturesque little villages and whales. That should be more than enough. Las Terrenas is where you´ll learn to relax and appreciate the laid-back pace of Dominican life. You´ll learn to take it easy and maybe even take some of this easygoing attitude back home with you. The simpler things are the more enjoyable they are. Life is so uncomplicated, time goes by at its own pace because no one´s in a hurry, there´s no rush. Above all you´ll learn that it´s the people that count. The people are the town´s greatest asset and charm. Some will engage you in conversation, entertain you with a story, a song, a dance... and everyone will smile. People are the real reason for travelling. Of course you´ll take photos of the fantastic Caribbean beaches and picture postcard landscapes to post on your social media page but very likely, if you´re thinking about coming back, it´s because of the people! ll those who believe that Dominican Republic only has massive, all inclusive resorts and beaches crammed with tourists are in for a nice surprise when they visit Las Terrenas. The area has been a delightful undiscovered paradise for quite a while. Tourism development began slowly and shyly in Las Terrenas and the first tourists to visit these shores back in the late 70´s made a sort of pact to keep what they´d experienced here a secret. Well, someone must have “let the cat out of the bag” because bit by bit, tourists began arriving but

not enough in numbers to alter these astoundingly beautiful natural landscapes. Las Terrenas used to be a simple fishing village and is now one of the most picturesque coastal towns in the country and portrays its purest essence by being extremely simple and incredibly sophisticated at the same time. This is the key to its success. Over the years, Las Terrenas has become a Cosmopolitan town where the cultural input from foreigners has defined its growth and idiosyncrasy. Locals and foreign residents are part of a diverse community in search of an enriching life style: artists, business people, professionals, bon vivants and, naturally, people involved in a variety of tourist activities all go to make up this rather unusual social potpourri, unparalleled and still very much in touch with its original Caribbe22

Nowadays, the town caters to the visitorsÂ´ every need: specialized restaurants from around the world, comfortable hotels, all kinds of sports, and a really special laid-back fun atmosphere day and night. No wonder so many decide to stay longer than planned. Exploring bustling Duarte Street or del Carmen Street, which intersect at the top and the bottom of the town center, you can feel the townÂ´s essence, its charm. Both streets are choc-o-block with shops and the sidewalks are busy with pedestrians going every which way. Las Terrenas, in all her splendor – intense blue and green... the beginning and end of everything. The true main attraction is the unspoiled coastline, the credentials being the warm, crystal clear waters with great coral reefs ideal for snorkeling and diving and secluded beaches shaded by coconut and palm trees. And the very best thing about the beaches around Las Terrenas is... there are so many of them there´s no fear of overcrowding or anyone encroaching your space.

Excursions not to be missed

xcursions are one of the most interesting things to do in Las Terrenas: discovering the area’s vast natural resources and landmarks. LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK Haitises means highlands in the language of the Taino Indians. The entire park is a curious and peculiar karst rock formation, which emerged from the sea millions of years ago, containing a system of caverns with pictographs. The park has a stunning landscape, featuring numerous cays, the most extensive mangrove forests in the country and abundant fauna.

HUMPBACK WHALES These mammals are the most spectacular ocean giants that can be observed and during two months a year they choose these waters to mate and reproduce. During this time they require no nutrition, surviving on their fat reserves. Visit the Whale Museum that shows the public details of the long journey the whales undertake annually from their Northern sanctuaries to the SamanĂĄ Bay. In addition to the beautiful photos there is a whale skeleton. The museum has become a unique educational space for the community and the hundreds of tourists who visit it each year. THE WATERFALL AT EL LIMON The waterfall can be reached on foot or horseback in about 45 minutes. The fall, with moss covered walls, is an incomparable natural beauty. It measures more

than 40 meters high and gives a spectacular performance that will leave you speechless. In the small lake formed by the waters of the waterfall, you can swim, but we advise caution. CAYO LEVANTADO Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the most famous places in the country. This marvellous island has been the location for many well known commercials, the Bacardi rum ads being the most famous. Crystal waters display a full range of blues. An essential excursion, it is easily reached by boat from the port of Santa Barbara. PLAYA RINCON Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the 35

country. Running about 2.5 km long and surrounded by thick vegetation, the crystalline waters are transparent and peaceful. On the road toward the beach don’t forget to visit El Iguanario. You can see, several specimen of Rhinoceros Iguana, endemic to the island. This project is able to sustain itself thanks to the contributions of its visitors. COFFEE ROUTE This dirt road between Los Puentes and La Colonia, shows the way of life in the Dominican countryside. You will see coffee, mango and cocoa trees and a traditional rubber plantation. PLAYA FRONTON It’s situated in the village of Las Galeras and is con-

sidered one of the best beaches in the country, with crystal turquoise waters surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. The beach is not easily accessible, keeping it off the normal tourist circuit. At Las Galeras you can also visit The Natural Aquarium. Kaio Morita, a Japanese biologist created it and cares for and feeds the twenty thousand fishes living there. Visitors can swim surrounded by hundreds of fish of all colors, a unique experience for children. PLAYA EL VALLE The more adventurous can enjoy twelve spectacular stretches of zip-line found along the road. Tasty fresh fish is offered in some of the “comedores” (local diners) on the beach. Take precautions when swimming. Ocean currents are strong in this spot. 38

Events and festivities Ethno-Mix Fair. In mid-October, during the course of a long weekend, Punta Popy becomes a multicultural gastronomic feast. All the nations with resident communities established in Las Terrenas, set up a stand/ restaurant and offer culinary specialties from their home land. During the evenings, several music and dance shows jazz up the soirée. Each year, residents and tourists enjoy this singular representation of the cultures that comprise Las Terrenas’ social tissue, with children leading the commotion. Holidays and Festivities “Semana Santa” (Easter), Christmas, New Year, along with “fiestas patronales” (patron saint festivities) celebrated in particular localities, and numerous long

weekend holidays, are the busiest times for domestic tourism: Dominicans take full advantage of these days to gather, eat, drink, dance and make some noise. Sports A wide variety of sports are available: tennis, cycling, horse riding, jogging, football, baseball, gyms... but, naturally water sports are the highlight: kite surfing, surfing, paddle boards, diving and sailing and a great selection of schools offering classes and equipment for hire. The month of May is when the Las Terrenas Sailing Club organizes its annual regatta where the scores count for the national championship. In February 12, 13, 14 Punta Popy is host to Festivela, a big colorful event with a huge variety of kite surf activities and competitions. Welcome, and may your holidays be unforgettable! 43
