Travel is good for your health
They say there are no side effects to traveling, just the small hitches that usually happen on any trip. What’s more, traveling is good for your health and improves your well-being.
A nine-year trial was conducted that looked at thousands of middle-aged people with a high risk of heart disease. The results showed that those who vacationed were less likely to suffer heart attacks or other cardiovascular problems, compared to those who did so less frequently.
One of the reasons we look forward to the holidays is to travel and discover new places, but it’s not the only one. We are also eager for that welldeserved rest to disconnect from the routine and leave stress behind, that awful feeling of physical or emotional tension.
There is a large body of research that suggests that any learning that poses a challenge to our brain helps develop neural connections. In other words, when we learn things or carry out new activities, we are training the brain, causing various synapses, and thus enhancing our neuroplasticity and improving our cognitive reserve.
Any routine is disastrous for the brain, whereas traveling, analyzing new places, sounds, smells, tastes, stimulates the brain to its full capacity, keeping us active and healthy. When we travel to other places, we are forcing our brain to continuously process and solve problems and overcome challenges. Traveling requires learning and memorizing everything new until it all becomes normal and familiar.
When traveling, we walk the streets and hidden corners of the city, with all the benefits this entails for our physical and mental health. Exercising, participating in social or intellectual activities are aspects that have proven beneficial to brain health at all ages.
Having a positive attitude is also wholesome. Traveling increases happiness and decreases stress, thus generating an accumulation of positive emotions that strengthen our neural networks, as opposed to what happens during stressful episodes.
Raquel SaezAnyone who believes that Dominican Republic offers only large all-inclusive resorts and crowded beaches will be pleasantly surprised when they visit the Samaná Peninsula.
Located in the northeast of the Dominican Republic, measuring about 600 km2, and with a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants, it shelters a microcosm overflowing with coconut groves, unspoiled beaches, mangroves, keys and islets, where neither the echo of legendary pirates, nor the boarding of noisy tourists alter the routine of fishermen and shopkeepers opening their grocery stores to serve the needs of everyday life.
LAS TERRENAS Unstoppable growth
For many years, the peninsula’s rugged mountainous terrain was the reason few travelers came to this area and the practically unspoiled landscape is a far cry from mass tourism.
Las Terrenas, the crown jewel
Once a simple fishing village and now one of the most picturesque coastlines in the country, Las Terrenas represents its purest essence to the utmost: being tremendously simple and incredibly sophisticated at the same time. That is the key to its success.
Although Santa Bárbara de Samaná is the capital of the province, Las Terrenas is the most visited and developed town, the region’s true tourism and economic driving force. A constantly growing and developing cross between fishing village and small cosmopolitan town.
The cultural contribution of its large foreign population, some here for more
than 40 years, has helped forge the town’s growth and idiosyncrasy. Locals and foreign residents form a varied community in search of an enriching lifestyle: a rare social potpourri of artists, traders, professionals, bon vivants and, of course, people involved in the tourism industry. All this, while holding on to its original Caribbean character, makes Las Terrenas one of a kind. French, Creole, Italian, English and German are just some of the languages that strengthen and color everyday conversations.
The town offers a great variety of services, especially those related to tourism: restaurants with specialties from around the world, comfortable hotels and apartments, a huge range of sports, and a casual fun atmosphere day and night. No wonder so many visitors stay longer than planned!
Intersecting at the top and bottom, bustling Duarte or Carmen streets exude essence and charm, both streets abuzz with busy shops and stalls and the constant coming and going of pedestrians. Walking through these streets you will be carried from the quiet beaches to the pulsating heart of the town.
The best destination in the Caribbean
Shaded by endless coconut groves, the beaches around Las Terrenas are rated the best in the country and certainly worthy of five stars.
Dotted with private villas, apart-hotels and small boutique hotels, nearly 20 km of practically unspoiled coastline is broken only by small mangroves and rocky outcrops.
Flanked by a coral reef where you can snorkel or explore from the surface, and anchored to an authentic village, Las Terrenas is still heaven on earth and is, without a doubt, one of the best holiday destinations in the entire Caribbean.
Daily life coexists with a thriving tourism sector.
Nature
The surrounding lush vegetation makes this region a paradise for anyone who loves authentic scenery. Hiking, mountain biking, diving, horseback riding, in addition to all the water sports (surfing, kitesurfing, sailing, paddle-boarding), are just some of the activities the province has to offer.
Coconut paradise
Samaná boasts a tradition of Creole cuisine, based on the fusion of cultures where Taino, Spanish, French and even American influences are noticeable. One of the reigning ingredients is coconut, and we find it in both sweet and savory dishes. Coconut milk is widely used, and fish or rice cooked in coconut are common dishes and widely available in most small restaurants called comedores.
The local catch is fabulous, and Sánchez’s seafood is considered the best in the country.
Ancestral traditions, folklore, and carnival
Samaná Peninsula has kept many of its traditions and local folklore alive. Carnival, the festival par excellence, is usually a very exotic and colorful affair, a mix of religious devotion and traditions passed down from the Tainos, the original inhabitants of the island. During the month of February, the streets are host to troupes and individuals in costumes representing a variety of cultural heritages: the native “areito”, the Spanish “diablo cojuelo” (lame devil), the African burial and dance troupes, etc.
Las Terrenas has a special color, its lush vegetation is the first thing that catches your eye. The intense green fringe bordering the blue of the sea creates a breathtaking effect.
The unspoiled coastline is the main attraction, characterized by clear warm waters, coral reefs, and sandy beaches shaded by coconut trees.
SANTA BÁRBARA DE SAMANÁ
Hugging the stunning homonymous bay dotted with sailboats and flanked by green cliffs, this charming city has kept its fishing traditions, but is also a major tourist destination thanks to the annual visit of more than 1,500 humpback whales, and is the starting point for boat trips to Los Haitises National Park, one of the must-do excursions on the Samaná Peninsula.
The history, culture, cuisine and architecture are also reflected in the diversity of its population, composed largely of descendants of African-American slaves.
Relax and enjoy the slow pace and views of the waterfront boulevard, with its restaurants, shops and bars.
La Churcha, historical religious icon
The church of Saint Peter, better known as “La Churcha” (from the English “church”) is the most emblematic building in this part of the country. It was built in 1901 and transported by ship from England. It is the only building left after a fire destroyed the entire city in 1946. “La Churcha” symbolizes the culture of freedom of a population that arrived with the dream of building a new life away from slavery. It belongs to the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), today defined as Dominican Evangelical. The design of the temple follows the Victorian style. The structure is clad with corrugated zinc and angular metal brackets on the outside, while the inside is all wood.
LAS GALERAS
Although surrounded by exquisite white sandy beaches and transparent waters, it is still a very small tourist destination and maintains the image of a quiet quaint fishing village.
Las Galeras offers visitors accommodation in small picturesque Caribbean style hotels. The extraordinary beauty of the area, including places like Bahía Rincón, make it an exclusive place for those who love peace and quiet.
Proximity to two protected areas allows for unforgettable nature excursions to Cabo Cabrón National Park and Cabo Samaná Natural Monument.
EL LIMÓN
ElLimón municipal district is located about 28 km from Santa Bárbara de Samaná and 14 km from Las Terrenas.
The people of El Limón are a mix of African Americans from North America and other white, and Caribbean Island groups. The most common surnames are Anderson, Jones, Calcaño, Frías, Morel, García, Wilmore.
Théodore Chassériau was born here in 1819, a romantic painter who distinguished himself in France during the first decades of the nineteenth century. The École Française in Las Terrenas is named in honor of him.
Economic activities in El Limón are the same as those throughout the province, namely, tourism, fishing, and agriculture.
Although production has dropped considerably in recent years, El Limón is one of the main producers of yams, sweet potatoes, breadfruit, and coconut in the country.
Tourism, especially ecotourism, has increased in the region with visits to the famous El Limón waterfall.
SÁNCHEZ
Formerly known as Las Cañitas, it was elevated to the category of municipality with the name of Sánchez, in honor of Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic.
In the early twentieth century, this fishing village was the most important seaport along the entire Dominican coastline. Sánchez had the only railroad in the country linking it to the cities of Moca, San Francisco de Macorís and La Vega, which generated great economic, political and social development. In 1906 the first branches of The Royal Bank of Canada, the National Bank of Santo Domingo and the International Banking Corporation were established in Sánchez. It also saw a flourish of beautiful Victorian style houses being built.
At present, despite its inactive port and the fact that the railway disappeared in 1966, the town still retains some importance with regard to tourism as it is one of the starting points for excursions to the Haitises National Park and whale watching.
Walking through the streets you can still see some of the centuries-old wooden houses, mostly derelict by now.
SOME IDYLLIC BEACHES
It might seem like an advertisement, but the truth is that Samaná boasts some of the most stunning wild beaches in the Caribbean. The turquoise waters and white-golden sands are an idyllic, almost unreal image. Lined with millions of coconut trees and vibrant vegetation, the beaches stretch untouched for miles.
PLAYA BONITA
This beach is a beautiful wonder of nature. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and coconut palms that plunge into crystal blue and turquoise waters, inviting you to get in for a dip and never want to leave. Playa Bonita is located a few minutes from Las Terrenas, and although somewhat isolated, it has boutique hotels, private villas and exquisite restaurants. Ideal for those looking for a relaxing day and quality down time.
PLAYA COSÓN
Cosón is one of the most impressive beaches in the country. This beach, with soft golden sand, is just a
10-minute drive west of Las Terrenas town center and is the continuation of Playa Bonita. Stretching for 6 km makes it ideal for nature walks. The sea is usually calm, but it lends itself to the begin surfing. Along the coastline are several boutique hotels, as well as a couple of typical restaurants. There are not many places like this left in the world.
PLAYA PUNTA POPY
Because of its location and proximity to town, Punta Popy is the social center of Las Terrenas. It offers wind conditions for both novice and experienced kitesurfers. On the west side the calmer waters attract swimmers and paddleboarders, as well as folks who come to watch the sunset every day while dining or enjoying a cocktail in one of the international restaurants and bars along the street.
PLAYA CALOLIMA
On holidays, especially on Sundays, this beach is filled with groups of families and friends who come to enjoy the calm waters, making it the perfect setting for all kinds of activities and events (parties, birthdays, etc.) It is a special beach, with areas so shallow that the water doesn’t even cover the knees, ideal for kids to play safely.
PLAYA EL VALLE
PLAYA EL VALLE
Located on the north coast of the Peninsula, about 15 km from Santa Bárbara de Samaná, the beach is embraced by mountains covered with tropical vegetation. This beautiful beach has a few small restaurants inviting you to try the catch of the day. And if you want to stay overnight, several “eco hotels” offer accommodation in the heart of unspoiled nature, a unique experience on the peninsula. The more adventurous can enjoy ziplining with twelve spectacular routes to choose from. When taking a dip in the sea, be careful, there are usually strong sea currents.
PLAYA ERMITAÑO
Divided into two, this spectacular secluded beach, about 400 m long, is only accessible on foot from Las Canas beach (about 30 minutes) or by boat from Las Terrenas (40 minutes). Playa Ermitaño owes its name to Juan “the hermit”, a repentant French pirate, who lived completely isolated in the area for many years. Playa Ermitaño has a mix of turquoise waters combined with fine butter-colored sand. One minute away is Playa Honda, a small cove with crystal clear waters, a natural paradise. Bring water and some food, the beach has no services.
PLAYA ERMITAÑO
PLAYA FRONTÓN
An imposing cliff backs the cove that houses this charming little wild beach, perfect for those who love solitude.
Frontón is only accessible by land after a long trek from Las Galeras or Boca del Diablo) or by boat from Las Galeras (about 20 minutes). Fine glistening white sand, endless coconut groves, characterized by beautiful crystal-clear turquoise waters full of marine fauna makes it perfect for snorkeling. Bring water and some food, there are no services on the beach. Boat trips combining Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón are available.
PLAYA RINCÓN
Playa Rincón is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Because it is so quiet and peaceful, and above all, because it far from any hotel complex, it is one of the main tourist attractions of the Samaná Peninsula.
Approximately 3 km of practically deserted beach surrounded by thick vegetation known for its transparent turquoise-blue waters. There are a few beach bars offering food and cold drinks. Playa Rincón is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
EL LIMÓN WATERFALLS NATURE TO THE FULLEST
ElSalto del Limón” lies between the town of El Limón and the village of Rancho Español, about 14 km from Las Terrenas and 20 km from Sta. Bárbara de Samaná. With more than 80,000 visitors a year, this waterfall is considered the most beautiful in the country and, for many, in the entire Caribbean.
The waterfall can be accessed from several “stops”, located along the El Limón - Samaná highway. In addition to the excursion, these stops usually offer lunch, crafts and typical products (cocoa, coffee, etc.).
The route from El Café village, very close to El Limón, offers the best views of the main waterfall; the other routes start out near Rancho Español village.
The trek can be done on horseback or on foot, although sometimes the road can be very muddy,
and normally takes about forty to sixty minutes. This tour takes you through a lovely setting surrounded by coconut palms that thicken shortly before reaching your destination.
The main waterfall is more than 40 meters high, with a spectacular natural pool formation at the bottom where you can swim. The waterfall emerges at the point where the waters of the Arroyo Chico river come down to flow into the El Limón River, giving rise to 18 km2 of protected area which locals and visitors can enjoy.
If something stands out from this environment, besides the incredible waterfall, it is the vegetation that surrounds the place. From the coconut trees, so characteristic of the island, to the magnificent flame trees that bloom between spring and summer dressing the surrounding forests in shades of brilliant red.
The protected area around El Limón waterfall is the most visited attraction in the province.
Once at the waterfall, young locals won’t miss the chance to show off their skills by climbing the steep slippery rocks and diving impressively into the pool below.
KEYS, CAVES AND MANGROVES
Having booked this excursion in one of the agencies in Las Terrenas, we boarded a speed boat, along with other visitors, and crossed the bay of Samaná in just twenty minutes.
Upon reaching the jagged coast of Los Haitises, we were met by lush practically unspoiled nature.
Los Haitises was declared a national park on June 3, 1976, but it was already a forest reserve since 1968, when it was called Zona Vedada de Los Haitises (Los Haitises Reserve).
The word Haitises comes from the Taino language and means high land or land of mountains, although the height of the set of hills and mogotes composing it vary between 30 and 40 meters.
Los Haitises contain several caverns, some quite large, such as La Reina caves, the La Arena cave, San Gabriel and the Railroad – also known as The
Line – that contain interesting pictograms, bas-reliefs and petroglyphs.
The park also contains the largest sample of Caribbean mangroves, predominantly the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) species.
Thanks to the diversity of its environments, there is also a great variety of fauna and the most outstanding of all protected areas in the Dominican Republic. Birds make up the largest group, accounting for 110 out of the 270 species in the country, and include herons, pelicans, flycatchers, parrots, owls and the stygian owl.
The richness of its fauna is also found among the mammals with the presence of manatees, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the Hispaniolan hutia (Plagiodontia aedium) and in the forest the Hispaniolan solenodon (Solenodon paradoxus), a small insect-eating mammal endemic to the island, which together with the hutia, are species that are very much in danger of extinction.
Los Haitises contain breathtaking landscapes such as the Bay of San Lorenzo and a variety of keys.
NATURAL SPECTACLE
The Samaná Peninsula is full of surprises. This former pirates’ hideout is considered an idyllic tourist destination, but above all, a true natural paradise.
At the beginning of each year (from January 15 to March 15) the bay becomes the scene of one of the most impressive natural spectacles on earth. Hundreds of humpback whales descend from the North Atlantic’s cold waters and travel to the warm tropical seas to mate and breed.
The humpback whale is one of the largest rorqual whales in the world: adults can reach more than 15 meters in length and weigh more than 30 tons.
During the summer, these cetaceans feed in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters, and breed in tropical areas in winter.
After almost 12 months of gestation, a calf
measures about 5 meters on average, and can weigh a ton.
Male humpback whales are famous for their “singing”. Their long vocalizations are a tool for social interaction that they use to mate, to get food and to locate other individuals of their own species.
There is a land observatory near Punta Balandra where you can clearly watch the whales from land, if weather conditions permit.
If you want to know more about these wonderful marine animals, be sure to visit the Whale Museum in Santa Bárbara de Samaná.
The north coast of the Dominican Republic is one of the main mating and breeding sites for humpback whales in the world.
Observing these marine giants in their natural habitat is an experience that must be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime.

He combines French culinary excellence with a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere reflecting his adopted country. An array of ornaments, amazing gifts, original paintings, quality leather goods, unusual gems. From the smallest item to the “Made in the Dominican Republic” customized pieces all have a history, an originality that blend with the brand name jewelry. Art is unique and can be seen in Terrenas en Plata Puerto Plaza.

C/ Principal no 233. In his gallery, Claude Lachamp, who is a journalist in Haiti, will show you authentic Haitian paintings, of which he is an expert. Come see works by renown painters such as Dabadie, Prosper Pierre Louis, Prefete Duffaut, Calix Henry, Alphonse Fritzner and Rouanez, as well as talented new-comers. Tobacco, which the Dominican Republic is now the world’s largest producer, is another of his passions. In the humidor you will find excellent cigars including his own brand. Also a large selection of local crafts, more than 300 models of sarongs, silver jewelry and gifts.
Creators of emotions... Fifteen years ago, Elizabeth and Jean-Paul opened the jewelry store in Las Terrenas, choosing the best designers, national brands and the best craftsmen. Guided by their exquisite taste they choose the most beautiful pieces meticulously focusing on the originality, diversity and authenticity of each piece.
A real reference point, Terrenas en Plata proposes magnificent pieces in larimar, a semiprecious stone unique to the Dominican Republic, or in amber, the other treasure to be found here, either as uncut stones or finely hand cut and mounted in rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants and necklaces.
As far as larimar is concerned, Terrenas en Plata is a real gold mine, offering a huge selection of jewelry and pieces of this precious stone.
You will also find beautiful collections in black coral, mother of pearl and conch, along with handmade nylon wire bracelets studded with semiprecious stones and silver, or very fashionable brand name and designer collections.
Terrenas en Plata is not just a jewelry store, it´s a unique place, a reference point.
