as Terrenas my “love”, I have been living with you for more than 20 years but, in recent times, I have gone from the greatest infatuation to the greatest disappointment and heartbreak. Not exactly with you, but with your leaders and managers. Towns are for their inhabitants: happy citizens make happy places. I don´t think that´s the case with you. So many of your natives, and many of those who came from overseas and invested when no one knew you, are now leaving after years living here, seeing their quality of life increasingly diminish. Sadly, you’ve gone downhill, and saying this makes me angry and upset. To see such a spectacular place, with everything going for it: climate, mountains, gastronomy, and that wonderful sea, sink into decline like this – how could it happen? Is it because not enough attention was paid to the most important things, like your inhabitants, or your wonderful green surroundings being killed off bit by bit; failing to encourage sustainable quality tourism; failing to clean and maintain each and every street and beach, such a shame; failing to reduce the unbearable traffic and noise caused by vehicles unsuited to public roads, and the loud speakers blaring away night and day. Nothing is left of the “terrenas essence”, neighbors feel more and more disquieted and helpless in an environment that is more and more given over to noisy drunken revelry and misguided tourism. Now would be a good time to make a change, to solve the problems of the noise, the garbage, the traffic, etc. Time to start taking care of yourself and become a more beautiful, cleaner, happier, and safer place to live in. Where has everything that set you apart gone? Has it disappeared? And in exchange for what? Sameness, quantity not quality, lots of places offering the same products and services, and not the quality and attention your visitors deserve. I wish we knew how to grab the chance to redirect everything. I wish the political leaders would begin to manage what belongs to everyone and knew how to mobilize, stimulate, and motivate an ill-treated community. LAS TERRENAS NATURE IN PURE STATE

The Dominican Republic is neither a common nor an easy destination for backpackers or independent travelers. Most frequently, tourists who visit the island opt for a prearranged travel package and stay at all-inclusive resorts, where they are warned repeatedly about the (alleged) dangers of wandering outside of hotel premises, and by which they are bound to consume solely within hotel facilities.

as Terrenas is a happy exception, bidding on a non-massive, sustainable and respectful tourism linked to local lifestyles and cultures. All-inclusive resorts are practically non existent here. Local tour operators offer a more personalized, tailored-made experience than the “large international resort” proposition. The region´s appeal is based on its natural environment and local folks. The urban landscape is less enchanting and

there are no ancient architectural vestiges to be seen, but the real attraction of traveling to this “neck of the woods” lies in discovering, learning, and breaking down prejudices about the people and their culture. Beaches in this area are in fact picture-perfect and rated among the best not only in the Dominican Republic, but also the Caribbean. This does not imply giving up on heavenly white-sanded beaches lined with palm trees. one over the other is a difficult task. To make true justice to the incomparable beauty of these coastlines, they should all be visited for their magnificence and uniqueness. Las Terrenas is arguably the busiest, most visited town in the area, and the fastest-growing (according to recent reports). Discovered –touristically speaking– some 30 years ago, the quiet fishing village has transformed into a dynamic and lively city that harmoniously mixes people from all corners of the world with Dominicans from every part of the country. The area has kilometers of alluring beaches and a town center that offers everything you may want in terms of cuisine,

services, products and culture. Unsurprisingly, real estate development has been explosive. The multicolor ecstasy of Las Terrenas is captivating, an unforgettable adventure and delicious cure from the wounds of time and haste. Its spirit of tradition runs upstream, in opposite direction from the rest of the world, where time doesn’t count, the pace of life is slow and relaxed, and magic enraptures, infecting anyone who crosses its path. Perhaps this is why many foreigners choose to stay here. Why visit Las Terrenas? Local cuisine is another of many secret pleasures from this region. The Atlantic waters that surround these coasts are rich with exquisite fish and marine life: giant spider crabs, lobsters, mahi-mahi, snapper, red snapper... Every evening dozens of fishing boats venture out to sea and return at dawn loaded with juicy surprises. The most varied “fruits of the sea” seem to sprout in the twisted hands of fishermen. At noon, the smells of typical Dominican cuisine are intoxicating and many restaurants include local specialties in their menus. Remember to try the lambí (queen conch) or the ceviche fish, as well as Samaná’s most popular dish: coconut fish, a gastronomic delight of condensed Caribbean cuisine ancestry and artistry. Local music is always blasting-off from some nearby radio and the sensuous Caribbean rhythms will immediately connect you with the pristine natural paradise that surrounds them. Stewed beef or chicken (stewed or roasted) accompanied by either habichuelas (red beans) on white rice or moro (black beans and rice) and tostones (fried green plantains) are the most popular lunch dishes served at the abundant and modest comedores (local diners). Make sure not to miss out on the wide range of available fruits such as coconut, papaya,

passion fruit, soursop and different types of mangoes... just to name a few. The richness of the lush native vegetation will reward you with exotic and unforgettable flavors. Finally and most importantly, if you are open-minded enough to comprehend, the locals will teach you a philosophy. A way of living that will forever change your attitude towards the world. What more is there to say? Las Terrenas is nature at its purest, with fair weather throughout the year. Not a show window for tourists but an authentic place looking out towards a fairytale sea. Witness to those times is the French cannon from the 18th century, used by Napoleon’s army in 1802, when the French occupied this part of the island and mounted their defense to try to crush the Haitian revolution. PLAYA EL VALLE On the 15-minute drive from Santa Bárbara de Samaná you can enjoy the beautiful natural landscape, before reaching a small community with a fabulous wide beach. Although once not very frequented, it has become popular among nature lovers, and so it stands out for its cleanliness and continuous care for the natural surroundings. El Valle is located between two mountains covered in tropical vegetation, with the mouth of the San Juan River just to one side. PLAYA EL VALLE

PLAYA FRONTÓN An imposing cliff is the backdrop to the cove that holds this discreet charming and unspoiled beach. Characterized by its beautiful waters it is perfect for people who love solitude. The only land access is along a dirt track. Otherwise, an exciting boat from Las Galeras will get you there in 20 minutes. Stock up on water and food beforehand as there are no services on the beach.

LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK

ontoured by the Samaná Bay, Los Haitises National Park extends over 631 km2 and is one of the country´s most beautiful landscapes, thanks to its geological formation and its flora, fauna, underground rivers, caverns and islets.

“Haitises” means highland or mountain range and this park is famous for its numerous conical hills or mogotes, which are low mountainous promontories (ranging between 30 and 40 meters in height) and are scattered throughout the coastal area. Like the rest of the park, these mogotes are formations which emerged over time. In addition to the numerous migratory species, the park is the safe haven for 110 out of the 230 bird species in the country. 22

These birds usually inhabit the numerous cays, the most famous of them all being Cayo de Los Pájaros or Bird Cay, where hundreds of birds, some with peculiar large red sacs on their chests, circle constantly. We still don´t know why they prefer this particular cay when they have more than 60 cays and islets to choose from! The park´s geomorphological karst formation gives rise to an important system of caves, among other things. The Taino Indians, ancient settlers of the region, used them as warehouses or ritual sites. Featuring pictographs and petroglyphs of great historical and archaeological value La Reina, San Gabriel and La Línea are just some of the caves that can be visited. The average temperature is 25ºC with high humidity and frequent rains in the two largest vital areas of rain forest and tropical forest. Come and enjoy this national park, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. 23

HUMPBACK WHALES

f you ever get the chance, don´t miss out on seeing the humpback whales in their natural mating and breeding environment. These spectacular mammals weighing up to 40 tons can be seen in the Samaná Bay´s warm waters from January to March. For the rest of the year, humpback whales live in the North Atlantic´s cold waters, but in winter months they undertake the arduous journey of more than 25,000 kilometers to reach tropical seas to mate and reproduce. While they are here they stop feeding and live off their fat reserves, dedicating all their time to reproductive activities or caring for their young. Of the entire Caribbean region, the Samaná Bay is where you can see humpback whales the closest. Like other large cetaceans, humpback whales were on the verge of extinction because of the whaling 24

industry. By the mid-twentieth century, the population had dropped by 90% and it was not until 1967 that they were declared a protected species. Since then, the pods have recovered, although only partially. They are still under constant threat from fishing nets, collisions with ships and pollution. To learn more you can visit the Whale Museum in Santa Bárbara de Samaná, which shows details of the epic journey that hundreds of these cetaceans make every year from the chilly northern sanctuaries down to the Samaná Bay. An unforgettable, spectacular and often thrilling tour. 25

EL LIMÓN WATERFALL

ne of the most outstanding natural beauties of Samaná is El Limón Waterfall, a spectacular 40 meter cascade plummeting into a natural pool of cool, crystal clear waters. El Limón Waterfall is the focal point of 18 km2 of protected area of dense tropical rainforest located about 300 meters above sea level. The waterfall originates at the point where the waters of Arroyo Chico empty into the El Limón River. Normally excursions are on horseback, trekking through the damp tropical forest accompanied by a local guide, although the more daring and physically fit can make it on foot if the tracks are dry. The journey to the fall takes about an hour whether on foot or on horseback.

There are four classic routes to the waterfall: El Café (with breathtaking views of the water fall from the point where visitors leave their horse sand continue on foot), Rancho Español, El Limón and Arroyo Surdido. Each route has stalls offering organized excursions, food and drinks for visitors. Once at the waterfall, the local youngsters won´t pass up the chance to show off their skills by climbing the steep, slippery rocks, before diving impressively into the pool below. The landscape around El Limón is beautiful, with small wooden houses painted in bright colors that blend in with the lush surroundings. There is a minimum entry fee to the park. The money is used for the up keep of the various trails and improving some segments. The protected area of El Limón Waterfall is one of the most frequented tourist attractions in the province.

HIDDEN GEMS

he Samana Peninsula is choc-o-block with incredible uncrowded sites, magical places yet to be discovered. CABO CABRÓN Cabo Cabrón National Park is a natural sanctuary located 45 minutes from Santa Bárbara de Samaná. This incredible natural gem is still a great unknown. Extending a mere 36 km2 (the smallest park in the Dominican Republic) it has a special charm, wild nature, dizzy landscapes, and a great variety of unique species. At 605 meters above sea level, the highest point offers spectacular views over breath-taking cliffs. Cabo Cabrón´s best kept secret is the beautiful bay of Puerto Escondido, a small beach where fishermen are often seen fishing in its crystal-clear waters. LA TOSA FALLS (Palmarito) A beautiful waterfall that has formed a limestone lip allowing the water to fall like a natural fountain. The surroundings are very well preserved, with a thick forest of hundred-year-old trees. It is an ideal place for a dip and is still not well known to visitors.

LA HONDONADA (El Frances) A natural stone arch sculpted by the waves breaking against the rocks. Although it is not a very suitable place for bathing, there are steps in place allowing you to enjoy a dip in the natural pool. La Hondonada is one of those places where you realize you don’t need to go far to be amazed. A little-known place worth exploring. La Hondonada 28

ou can practice all kinds of sports in Las Terrenas, but the ones related to the sea are the most popular (kitesurfing, surfing, paddle, sailing, kayaking, etc.). Thanks to its special features, the area has begun to attract organizers and sports people from a wide range of sporting disciplines. ULTRA TRI 515 In mid-June, Víctor Hugo Moreno, (triathlon trainer living in Las Terrenas) organized the 1st Ultra Triathlon in the Dominican Republic (10 km swimming, 421 km cycling, 84 km race). The only local representative, Fausto Batista, won a well-deserved second place behind winner, Michael Núñez (Costa Rica), with a total time of 29h 12min.

Dominican Enduro Series At the end of July, Mountain Bike fans got to enjoy the second heat of the Dominican Enduro Series. Local biker Sacha Fanals came second in the rigid trailbike category. Enduro is the world´s fastest growing mountain bike competition. X TERRA R.D. On September 4-5, Cosón Bay hosted the 4th Xterra, an international mountain triathlon. The main event consisted of a 1.5 km swim, 30 km MTB, and 10 km race. Valentina Carballo (Chile) was the female winner and Rom Akerson (Costa Rica) the overall winner. Local riders Yohanny Morel García and Giorgio Bunetto were winners in their respective categories.
