PRESIDENT’S IMPRINT

Let me take you to a place… In founding Trevecca in 1901, J. O. McClurkan exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit aimed at meeting the deepest needs of the people of Nashville. His death was front page news. He was known for his selfless service. The genius of his work was the marriage of a holy passion to serve and practical expertise. His legacy is a school founded to shape Godly servants, true saints. 113 years later, Trevecca is a Christian community in the heart of Nashville transforming the world one graduate at a time. We live in a broken world. Centuries of education, technology and religion have not alleviated human need. At times, they have only deepened the pain of our world. As a result, pessimism has become the ruling attitude of our day. The lack of genuinely transforming power has left us with sound bytes, veneer promises and evaporating idols. Trevecca exists to offer a transforming hope to the world through the lives of our graduates. Two things are needed to make the difference – a holy passion to serve and practical expertise. To have expertise without service is haughty. To serve without the needed skill is fruitless. This marriage of holy passion and practical expertise is a rare commodity. We believe that holy passion is the result of a transforming encounter with God. Such holiness cannot be educated into people. It is the gift of God. Without this, service to our fellow human tends to tire or turn selfish. At the same time, a holy passion to serve without practical expertise may harm the persons we intend to help. God has given us the capacity for great service through honing our skills to the highest level of expertise. 4

Dan Boone

PRESIDENT, TREVECCA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY

Should we fail, the church will flounder in its mission; the city of Nashville will be less just, less peaceful, less neighborly; and a generation of students will be deprived of the most transforming experience of their lives. Those who have gone before us insist that we not let McClurkan’s dream die. And we will not.

IF WE ARE EFFECTIVE, TEN YEARS FROM NOW‌ Trevecca will be a household word in the city of Nashville, known for the Christ-like character and practical expertise of its graduates. The church will be invigorated by graduates who lead our churches into the trenches of human need. Students will come to Trevecca because they hear stories of life-transformation. They will stay and graduate from Trevecca because they want their lives to matter here and now for God. People will want to work at Trevecca because the culture is infected with spiritual depth, intellectual rigor, learning, high performance, engagement, excellent service and energy. People who just want a paycheck will not bother to apply. Teachers will be as committed to their students as they are to their field of study and will be focused on student learning. Generous donors will see the difference Trevecca is making in the world and will fund the cause with unprecedented gifts. Murfreesboro Road and South Nashville will be changed visibly, socially and morally.

These guiding words define our mission. Two iconic structures on the campus serve as daily reminders of this calling: the Reed Memorial Tower and the statue of Jesus. The Reed Memorial Tower is now the highest structure on the campus. We are indebted to a generous donor who wanted to do something in honor of our former president, Millard Reed. A tower is an aspirational structure that lifts our gaze from the ground to the sky. The idea of aspiration is deeply embedded in our Christian faith. The tower calls us to excellence in our teaching, studies, research and academic preparation. We owe God our best. Practical expertise of the highest caliber is our response to God. Our students are preparing to do great work.

5

J

ust down the street from the tower is a smaller structure, the statue of Jesus stooping to wash the feet of his followers. Where the tower invites us to aspire to excellence, the statue invites us to use that excellence in humble service. We aspire to the highest excellence in academic preparation and bend humbly to serve. One structure causes us to look up in aspiration, the other down in service – Christ-like character and real-world relevance.

these two structures you find our values. 6

PRESIDENT’S IMPRINT

We know who we are and what we are doing. We are unapologetically Christian with deep roots in scripture and Wesleyan theology. This guiding value weeds out actions, behaviors and decisions that are not in line with our Christian faith. It also tells us what our priorities are and locates us in a theological story.

We offer holistic education, focused on the development of persons in likeness to Jesus. We care about the mind, the body, relationships, the neighbor, money, sexuality, priorities, work, politics, play – all of life. Our mission does not end with a successful GPA.

We love our students and express this in a mentoring environment that is conducive to the best learning practices. Wherever you see an encounter between an employee and a student, an attempt is underway to shape the student’s life for the better.

As you browse the following pages, I hope you will sense the culture of Trevecca. Because our success is not printing these words on pages but embodying them in flesh and blood. Enjoy a place called Trevecca.

Trevecca’s Physician Assistant students serve all over the world giving medical attention to the most needy. Over the last year, 16 current students traveled to serve in Haiti. The program has also continued with its efforts in helping the underserved in Nashville via our work with Mercury Courts and Room In the Inn. “Trevecca chapel has been a place to be still, listen and know that God is with us in the midst of every moment, as well as a place to praise the Lord through song and worship. Trevecca chapel serves as a reminder to me of the good, good Father we have in God. I am blessed to get the chance for community through worship at chapel during the course of my weeks on campus. - Curtis Rich INTERCULTURAL STUDIES MAJOR

“Trevecca encourages me in my Christian faith by the atmosphere it provides. You can’t walk around our athletic department without seeing Christ through the faith and character of our coaches and staff. Even our training staff leads us in devotions while we are on the road. Trevecca athletes have to choose every day to take a stand in the locker room, on the field, and on the court. Student-led groups like I Am Second, Kahila and Uncensored bring athletes and non-athletes together, providing a safe environment for students to talk about real life struggles and encourage one another in our walks with God.” - Chris Elliott

“I’m grateful that Trevecca offered the chance to continue my education through the new Pastor’s Class this year. The teaching and the experience contained useful and practical applications to my current ministry setting. I feel like these classes 100% reflect Trevecca’s value of being ‘unapologetically Christian.’ Trevecca is impacting thousands by equipping pastors to serve their community better.” - Derek Hunter PASTOR, RESTORATION COMMUNITY CHURCH

“Each year, members of the Trevecca community have the opportunity to participate in mission trips domestically and globally. Our teams are intentional in partnering with those already in ministry. We know that God is already at work in the places we go, but our hope is that we can be a part of God’s work in the lives of the people that we encounter and minister to during our trips. Lives of our students are changed as they work side-by-side in ministry with those around them both here in the United States and around the world.”

The Importance of

Holistic Education “John Dewey, one of America’s most renowned educational theorists, believed in educating the whole child – the head, the hands, the heart. This is truly the center of holistic education – educating the entire person. In the School of Education, there are three tenets undergirding the conceptual framework – knowing, doing and being. These three ideas correlate to Dewey’s philosophy of holistic education. The School of Education candidates acquire the conceptual knowledge and skills required to teach (knowing), put the conceptual knowledge and skills into action (doing) and obtain the dispositions needed to be an effective teacher (being). The conceptual knowledge is acquired through national standards or competencies. TASC standards, upon which the initial

licensure programs are based, have an additional standard which is Trevecca specific: ‘The professional Christian educator embraces ethical and moral values and is able to integrate Christian Faith and learning in practice.’ The School of Education recognizes the value and significance of the spiritual development for all candidates. Integration of faith into learning is crucial with field experiences taking place in diverse settings to allow candidates to be mentored by experts in the profession. Each candidate is assessed at the end of all education courses to ensure effective teaching dispositions are developing. Ultimately, when candidates leave the School of Education, they are ready to truly embody Trevecca’s philosophy: to be rather than to seem.”

“Holistic education is grounded in the biblical conviction that the human being is not divided into many fragmented parts such as the physical, spiritual, emotional and relational but rather that the human is a single entity created by God. Therefore, it provides a student with the opportunity to envision life, experience life and share life in an integrated way. It understands and teaches that each aspect of the human is integral to every other aspect if the human is truly to be whole as a human being.

Scripture would call this shalom— wholeness, completeness, the full and integrated life. In the School of Theology and Christian Ministry, students are invited to see how their walk with God and their preparation for ministry in the world is directly interwoven with the physical wellbeing, the emotional wholeness and healthy social relationships of both themselves and those whom they serve in the world. ‘Spirituality’ is not separate from, but the totality of, the whole human. This is indeed shalom.”

“A liberal arts education celebrates what it means to be fully, wonderfully human as God created us to be. Some institutions primarily prepare people for a particular job or career path; I maintain we are called to be more than a job. We are called to be salt and light in a world that desperately needs to see Christ modeled in relationships, art, music, theatre, literature, science, media, counseling, social work, criminal justice, healthy living— the list goes on and on. A liberal arts education prepares people to influence the world around them, regardless of academic major or program of study.” 20

James Hiatt, J.D., M.B.A.

DEAN, SKINNER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY/ PROFESSOR, BUSINESS

“A liberal arts education provides foundational knowledge and skills necessary for the understanding of, and advancement in, all fields of study. It provides context, perspective and depth of comprehension. It allows for connections to be made between academic disciplines that would not likely happen otherwise. These connections can lead not only to greater understanding on the part of students but may contribute meaningfully to the body of all knowledge and to the benefit of mankind as a whole.

Beyond serving as a launching pad for individual achievement and the possible betterment of the human race, a liberal arts education enhances the quality of individual students’ lives. They can understand literary and historical references that can provide context and result in better judgment. They can appreciate art and music as well as the talent and dedication necessary to bring about such works. They can critique current political events and engage in dialog with fellow citizens to become a

better electorate and more influential climate shapers. They can comprehend the advances in science and technology and are able to use such knowledge not only for their personal benefits but to benefit others around them as well. To summarize, a liberal arts education is very much a part of a holistic education and certainly provides potential to all students for a more comprehensive understanding of all creation and the interaction of all its moving parts!” 21

Timothy Eades, Ed.D. ASSOCIATE PROVOST OF GRADUATE AND CONTINUING STUDIES “The concept of adult learner first emerged on the U.S. educational landscape in the 1950s via the theories and writings of Dr. Malcolm Knowles. Knowles positioned the adult learner’s readiness, orientation and motivation to learn in a different light than traditional-aged students which, in turn, led to the development of a body of literature related to educating these students. Over the six decades that have followed, new and innovative ways to provide an education to students of any age, degree level or location have exploded across the country. Trevecca committed to this endeavor in the 1980s and continues to broaden its learning opportunities and delivery methods for nontraditional students. At the heart of the creation of each piece of curriculum and the undertaking of teaching the non-traditional student in the 22

online,

classroom or is the desire to encounter the whole person. Every academic discipline and program is taught in a way that leads to the enhancement of student competencies as a professional, as a citizen and as a Christian. One could say this holistic focus of Trevecca seeks to engage the head, the heart and the hands of each student, viewing them as a servant leader to their family, church, community and business or organization. I love the C.S. Lewis quote, ‘education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.’ I’ve watched faith and learning time and time again come alive in the mind and heart of an adult student. A holistic approach that seeks to integrate faith and learning for any student of any age is a game changer.”

he Neocera grant funds Trevecca students as undergraduate research assistants and allows them to gain hands-on experience as they work with faculty on various research and development projects. For the past four years, Trevecca has collaborated with Neocera and the University of Maryland on a federallyfunded project focused on using a SQUID microscope to develop new circuit analysis tools for the semiconductor industry. Skills and experience that students develop during their work help contribute to their success in the industry and in graduate

programs. For example, Trevecca physics graduate Cody Ballard ‘12 is now a Ph.D. student working on quantum computing at the University of Maryland, and Matt Keffer ‘13 is working as a hardware test engineer at Northrup Grumman Corporation. Physics Professor, Fred Cawthorne was formerly the director of engineering at Neocera and his continuing professional relationship with the company has allowed Trevecca to build the SQUID microscope at Trevecca and obtain an extensive amount of equipment at no cost to the University.

“Working on Trevecca’s urban farm has given me a lot that classrooms don’t offer. I’ve learned about the science of nature and how God designed all of life to work together and flourish. I’ve learned how to take better care of the planet God entrusted to us. I’ve learned about history, economy and the importance that sustainable farming holds for our future. I’ve learned about community and solidarity and stewardship. But I think what the farm has done most for me is that I can feel God’s presence through His creation. ver the past year, Trevecca offered six ACT prep workshops to the community and also taught two workshops at Metro Nashville High Schools. In addition to Dr. Donna Gray and her staff at Trevecca’s Center for Leadership, Calling and Service, six Trevecca students helped lead the workshops this year.

“The ACT Prep workshops are a different kind of experience than the tutoring I normally do at the CLCS. The workshops we offer are about helping students within the Nashville community achieve their goals. We calm fears and encourage and teach study skills that will be beneficial in college. I’ve been inspired and challenged by the determination I’ve seen from some of the students. I don’t think many colleges offer ACT workshops to any student in the area. I think it’s really neat that Trevecca is able to offer that assistance, and I know it makes a difference for the students who attend.” - Erin Wiese ENGLISH EDUCATION MAJOR

The Counseling Center prides itself in providing a safe place for our students to struggle well. In the fall, our 14 interns, primarily from Trevecca’s Graduate Counseling Program, provided the Trevecca student population with over 600 hours of counseling on a wide array of issues, from depression and anxiety to spiritual questioning. 91% of our clients reported a positive to very positive experience with their counselor and 97% of students would recommend the counseling center to another student.
