GRAND OPENING: Harvey Milk Call Center The Trevor Project marked Harvey Milk Day by opening the Harvey Milk Call Center in his old camera shop at Castro Camera in San Francisco. This newest location providing support to the Trevor Lifeline honors Harvey’s spirit and the work that Harvey did to encourage us all to be visible and true to ourselves. The grand opening happened Sunday morning, May 22, 2011, and we gathered a crowd in front of Castro Camera, including members the San Francisco Ambassadors. State Senator Mark Leno and Supervisors David Chiu and Scott Weiner offered acclaim and bestowed proclamations on The Trevor Project. Speakers from The Trevor Project included David McFarland, Interim Executive Director who welcomed the crowd and offered thanks and appreciation. Co-founder, James Lecesne told the history of The Trevor Project, and Board Member, Dustin Lance Black, who had been instrumental in making the call center a reality, spoke passionately about the mission we have and how closely aligned it is with Harvey’s legacy. Former colleagues of Harvey’s were also on hand, including Cleve Jones, Danny Nicoletta, Anne Kronenberg, Frank Robinson, Michael Wong, and many others. Anne told stories of how she and Harvey took calls from young people in the very same spot where The Trevor Lifeline is now operating. Later that night, when the Harvey Milk Call Center officially began taking calls, our crisis workers waited with anticipation for the first ring in Harvey Milk’s old office. Just after midnight on May 23, 2011, the phone rang with our first caller. The Harvey Milk Call Center is one of three call centers operated by The Trevor Project, which operates 24/7, providing support to young people across the country. More than 30,000 young people contact the Trevor Lifeline every year, asking for advice, help, acceptance and support. Their calls are answered by the more than 200 trained volunteers and staff, who are all dedicated to providing each and every caller with a safe place to turn. ~James Lecesne, Co-Founder of The Trevor Project & Phoenix Schneider, Program Director

Leading in Crisis Services This April, The Trevor Project’s Crisis Services team attended the American Association of Suicidology Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. We had the opportunity to facilitate a half-day workshop focusing on LGBTQ youth specific issues and risk factors for suicide, and how to incorporate better practices for working with this population into crisis intervention services nationwide. In addition to leading our pre-conference session, we had the pleasure of working in person with some of our national crisis chat partners, including Contact USA and iCarol. There has been a huge increase in demand for web-based crisis programs, due to their anonymity and ability to break through the myriad of barriers that inhibit people to seek help over the phone. In response to this demand, The Trevor Project has collaborated with crisis chat service providers nationwide in an effort to deliver the best programs possible. Our conversations about new protocols and technologies are similar to those that occurred between pioneers of crisis lines when they were new and at the leading edge of technology 40 years ago. One-Year Anniversary: DC Ambassadors

Executive Message This National LGBT Pride Month, The Trevor Project celebrates the energy and diversity of our LGBTQ community. The FUTURE of The Trevor Project is deeply rooted in our history. Harvey Milk dedicated himself to the gay and lesbian movement in order to give hope to the hopeless, and more than 30 years ago, he was there to answer phone calls from youth who more than anything needed to hear an understanding, compassionate voice. This spring, we opened our third national call center, named the Harvey Milk Call Center in San Francisco inside the most historic landmark on Castro Street. We feel confident that the spirit of Harvey Milk smiles down on our dedicated, trained Lifeline counselors and volunteers as they continue the life-saving work he started from that very same spot. The Trevor Project’s innovation has made us a leader in the crisis intervention and suicide prevention community. We are proud to say that as leaders, we are working in partnership at the highest levels of the U.S. government to improve suicide prevention throughout this country. A testament to that leadership is you can find the Trevor Lifeline listed on the White House’s LGBT Pride Month page. We are also a listed resource on the President’s StopBullying. gov, a federal site dedicated to stopping and preventing youth bullying. Near the end of June at Trevor Live in New York City, presented by ING, we will be honoring Daniel Radcliffe with the Trevor Hero Award for his long-time support of The Trevor Project. In our nation’s capital, the DC Ambassadors have been very active in the community with local schools and organizations, as well as fundraising events that benefit The Trevor Project. In February, The Trevor Project conducted a suicide prevention training with social workers in the DC Public Schools (DCPS) system. The training focused on the power of words and biases, and encouraged a lively and frank discussion about LGBTQ youth and suicide. DCPS also invited the DC Ambassadors’ Education Outreach Committee Chair Celina Gerbic to join their LGBTQ Steering Committee, which works on strategic planning for LGBTQ support for students, school staff, and families. To help raise awareness for The Trevor Project’s programs, the DC Ambassadors participated in the SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) health fair. Many suicide prevention leaders and university officials from across the country stopped by the table to ask questions and get information. The DC Ambassadors also participate in the DC Concerned Providers Coalition, a group of organizations that focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, including Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Mayor’s Office, Sasha Bruce, SMYAL, DCPS, Metro Teen Aids, PFLAG, and others. To show that the “Future’s So Bright” for LGBTQ youth, The DC Ambassadors proudly sponsored DC Youth Pride on Saturday, April 30. The Trevor Project was selected as the Grand Marshal of Capital Pride, and the DC Ambassadors gathered a crowd of volunteers to lead DC’s pride parade on June 11, and for the Capital Pride Street Fair on June 12. The Future is Bright During Pride season, The Trevor Project will be available for youth on the phone, online and in cities across the country. Our incredible volunteers will be sharing the countless ways to get involved with the LGBTQ community and through our robust social networks, every voice will be heard. If you are attending a Pride festival with The Trevor Project, check in with us on Foursquare. With Foursquare quickly becoming one of our new favorite social media outlets, you can help our presence grow by following us! Foursquare gives Pride attendees across the United States the ability to not only learn about Trevor’s favorite places to visit in their area, but allows youth to ‘check in’ at local Pride celebrations in their hometown or at LGBT-inclusive stores like CB2. Through our Foursquare page, LGBTQ youth can connect with The Trevor Project in real-time and receive informative Tips delivered straight to their mobile phones. On our social network for users aged 13-24 years old, TrevorSpace.org, we will be continuing our fun and thought-provoking book club, and members will be participating in a contest entitled ‘Show Your Pride!’ Users will be asked to submit photos or videos of how they show their pride, and one participant will be selected each week to be featured on the site’s home page and will receive an exclusive OnchMovement Trevor Flip-O-Pendant. We’ll also continue searching for our biggest fans on our Facebook page, where we showcase our most enthusiastic, supportive and truly inspirational fans with a big thank you and an addition to our photo gallery. Ernst & Young ‘TREVOR’ Screening

New National Corporate Partnerships As a leader in modern, affordable home furnishings, CB2 sets a fine example for how other companies can effect a positive change in the lives of young people. Through this partnership, CB2 is dedicated to creating safe spaces in homes across the country, raising awareness about the needs of LGBTQ youth in crisis. In celebration of our partnership, CB2 is launching a company-wide, two-day shopping occasion throughout all CB2 retail channels including catalog, in-store and online (www.cb2.com) from June 25, 2011 to June 26, 2011. Five percent of all sales during that weekend benefit The Trevor Project.

On April 28, 2011, Ernst & Young LLP hosted a red carpet screening of the Academy Award-winning film “Trevor” at its New York headquarters in Times Square. More than a dozen multi-national corporations representing various industries joined their friends at Ernst & Young and Beyond, the company’s LGBT employee resource group, to learn about our life-saving work – a testament that The Trevor Project’s message of hope and a future for all youth can play a key role in the culture of the business community at large. Following the screening, The Trevor Project’s co-founders, Peggy Rajski and James Lecesne, answered questions and engaged our guests in a discussion about how to create a safe, supportive and positive environment for everyone. The event was hosted by two of Ernst & Young’s most senior partners, Managing Partner of the Americas, Steve Howe and Global Vice Chair, Beth Brooke. Beyond a film screening, the gathering was an opportunity to connect attendees to our life-affirming work while educating them about ways they can help carry our life-saving messages to their families, colleagues and communities.

The natural connection with Esurance is our mutual value of providing service online and on-the-phone. The company has launched an awareness campaign to run throughout National LGBT Pride month to engage Facebook fans and raise money for The Trevor Project. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead And with those immortal words, Warren Cohn, Vice Chair of The Trevor Project’s Board of Directors, welcomed more than 450 guests and kicked off The Trevor Project’s 7th Annual Garden Party for Trevor.

This special screening event is one of a number of engagements among The Trevor Project and Ernst & Young. On June 27, 2011 Ernst & Young will accept the “Trevor 2020 Award” at Trevor Live at Capitale in New York. We are thrilled to bestow this award upon Ernst & Young for their leadership among the financial services industry in support of the LGBT community.

The Garden Party for Trevor is the biggest event for the Circle of Hope. This year, the Garden Party was hosted and underwritten by acclaimed director, Roland Emmerich. He opened his home for the largest Garden Party yet, where hundreds of friends and supporters could learn more about The Trevor Project and the Circle of Hope – the signature giving program for The Trevor Project.

We want to extend a very special thanks to COH members and Ernst & Young partners, Kerrie MacPherson and Peter Lease as well as EY Associate and COH member Ralph Furlo for introducing The Trevor Project to the firm.

At the party, guests were treated to a presentation by event Chair Josh Barry, Interim Executive Director David McFarland, co-founders of The Trevor Project, Peggy Rajski and James Lecesne, and a special performance of “It Gets Better” by a collection of Broadway stars. Along with a bar provided by Absolut, MillerCoors Nino Rustico and Fiji Water, treats from Nibnobs and a beautiful sunny spring day, guests enjoyed the best of The Trevor Project!

On Monday, June 27, 2011, Daniel Radcliffe will be honored with the Trevor Hero Award. The Trevor Project will also honor Ernst & Young LLP with the Trevor 2020 Award. The show will feature music, comedy, and appearances by Mark Consuelos, Janeane Garofolo, Brad Goreski, John Larroquette, Don Lemon, Amy Poehler, Kelly Ripa, Robin Williams, and more. The Trevor Hero Award recognizes an individual who serves as an inspiration to sexual minority youth and increases visibility and understanding of the LGBTQ community. A star of stage and screen, Daniel has been involved with The Trevor Project since 2009, appearing in public service announcements and making public statements in support of LGBTQ youth. This past spring, he hosted volunteers from the Trevor Lifeline to attend “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.” Most recently, Daniel and the cast of “How to Succeed” raised the most money in an auction to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, which resulted in a $15,000 donation to The Trevor Project. Daniel has truly been a hero to LGBTQ youth in crisis, and to our volunteers. We are very proud to offer him this honor. Show Your Pride! Our theme this year for Pride Month is the Future’s So Bright, and we want YOU to help us make it even brighter. Pride events are a great way for The Trevor Project to raise awareness about our life-saving services, like the Trevor Lifeline, TrevorChat, and Ask Trevor. Plus we get to engage young people in our community of youth online, TrevorSpace, and our mobile information network, and engage new volunteers in our mission. This year, The Trevor Project is honored to have been selected as a Grand Marshal in three major Pride celebrations. On Harvey Milk Day, we celebrated our pride as Political Grand Marshal of Long Beach Pride in California. This month, the DC Ambassadors of The Trevor Project will lead a massive contingent of supporters through the streets of our Nation’s Capital as The Trevor Project serves as the Capital Pride Parade Grand Marshal. Also, rounding out the last weekend of June, The Trevor Project’s San Francisco Ambassadors and hundreds of volunteers will lead the oldest Pride Parade in the country as we serve as the National Organizational Grand Marshal of San Francisco Pride. Education Programming Lifeguard Workshop Program has continued to grow! This fiscal year we have expanded our reach with the Lifeguard workshop throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Tulare County, San Francisco, New York, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. As our program has expanded this year we’ve highlighted the importance of supporting school staff to best serve LGBTQ youth. As gatekeepers, teachers, counselors and other school staff play an important role in supporting their students. In the last few months the Trevor Project has actively engaged service providers (teachers, counselors, school administration) through trainings on best practices providing them with practical tips to make a difference in the lives of our youth. This is an important step in changing the overall climate at schools. We are also really excited to partner with several schools on creating a more comprehensive antibullying policy. Thank you to all our dedicated facilitators who do an amazing job with each workshop!

Stories From the Frontline

VOLUN Trevor volunteers rock. Seriously. However, one volunteer has especially made an impact on Team Trevor in New York in a way he might not even comprehend. It might be because he seems to be contributing everywhere. Maybe helping out at our numerous trainings, speaking at volunteer orientations or simply bringing a smile to the faces of those in the office. For him, no task is too big or too small. Anything we throw at him he catches effortlessly, throwing back a grin and a delightfully dry quip. He always injects a bit of fun and whimsy in the things he does; his serenading of the laminator might be the most fun anyone ever had melting plastic around paper. He has an eye for detail, and any work he tackles he does so with impressive effort, often producing something that is better than anything we might’ve imagined. Yes, John Betts is a bonafide Trevor Rockstar. Not just a rockstar; a Trevor Rockstar. For within John, while watching him at work on the humblest of tasks, you see a quiet, persistent passion that is the hallmark of all our volunteers. His passion, selflessness, and determination to create change are things found in all our volunteers, working tirelessly day after day on the most important of missions– saving young lives. Knowing that John continues to be a Trevor Rockstar makes the future very bright, indeed.

Manny, Chicago, IL

When he called the Trevor Lifeline, Manny was struggling. He was homeless, dealing with weight issues, out of school, and was overcome with feelings of depression and loneliness. He revealed to our Counselor that his mother had confronted him with her suspicion that he was gay. He explained to her that he was not gay, but bisexual. She didn’t take it well and she told Manny’s grandmother, whereupon she told their entire family. Following this, Manny began to receive phone calls and emails from members of his extended family in Trinidad, each dripping with the same sentiment of rejection. Further, he was repeatedly kicked out of his home during this time. Because of this, he had moved in with a friend and her mother, but the living situation turned out to be a tense one and he was told that he needed to leave. He told the Counselor that, in preparation for his approaching homelessness, he had applied to several youth homeless shelters throughout his area, but that he had not yet been able to find a safe place to stay. On top of all this, Manny was able to open up to the Counselor about the death of his close friend who he described as being his only true friend. Losing her had left him devastated and hopeless. Again and again, Manny told the Counselor that he was “tired,” that he felt like he was a burden on others and that he didn’t want to continue feeling that way. He admitted to considering suicide, and the Counselor determined that he should have a safety plan for handling the weeks to come. Together, they worked one out and discussed how Manny could follow it. Finally, the Counselor praised Manny for his strength and bravery in reaching out for help. Manny left the call planning to reapply for school and committed to following the plan he and the Counselor had made. Before ending the call, he said, “You know, I called with tears in my eyes. And it’s weird - but now I feel empowered. Thank you.”

Advocacy Update In April, LGBTQ and allied youth in California participated in “The GSA Advocacy and Youth Leadership Academy,” culminating in Queer Youth Advocacy Day in Sacramento. More than 60 young leaders participated in the weekend-long training on advocacy, hosted by The Trevor Project, Gay-Straight Alliance Network, The Transgender Law Center and Equality California. Youth learned skills to prepare them to meet with elected officials and speak with the media. Then, on Monday, April 4, these young leaders spoke with nearly every member of the California Assembly and Senate, the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor to tell them about three bills important to LGBTQ youth. “Seth’s Law,” introduced by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, provides guidance, resources and clear instruction on how to better implement California’s existing anti-bullying laws and provides more clear protections and remedies for those who are targeted by bullies. Youth also spoke about the “Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act,” introduced by Senator Mark Leno. This bill requires California textbooks and teaching materials to talk about the contributions of LGBT Americans in the social sciences in an inclusive and non-offensive manner. Teaching materials will also include the contributions of LGBT Americans as they are updated. The third bill that youth advocated on behalf of is the “Gender Non-Discrimination Act,” introduced by Assemblymember Toni Atkins. This bill clearly lists gender identity and gender expression in non-discrimination codes for education, law and other important areas. LGBTQ youth need to know they are protected, that their educators have the tools to address bullying, and that they are an important part of our nation’s history. ~Dave Reynolds, Sr. Public Policy & Research Manager

Books on Trevor Space This May, members of The Trevor Project’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) hosted a 3-week interactive LGBTQ book club about David Levithan and John Green’s best-selling, “Will Grayson, Will Grayson” on TrevorSpace. With the help of their advisor, young adult book reviewer Lee Wind, Trevor Interns Brett Fonesca and Kim Trinh, and the Advocate. com, this great new youth-driven project was a complete success. One of the best elements of this activity is youth get to interview the authors of books on TrevorSpace – twice. The first interview launches the new book, and members of the YAC ask questions, along with Lee Wind. The 2nd interview is a live webchat with the author, hosted by Advocate.com, TrevorSpace, and LeeWind.com and it marks the end of the daily discussions. The webchat is moderated by Lee Wind, but the questions are asked and selected by youth, who also serve as producers of the chat. Check out what some of our YAC members asked David Levithan to kick off the book club this May (excerpted from “The Exclusive David Levithan Interview…”, LeeWind.com). Trevor Project YAC: You make many references in the book to will grayson being suicidal and/or homicidal as well as depressed. Though it is flippant, what was the purpose of highlighting his depression? David: That’s just will talking – everything is exaggerated to him when it comes to articulating his thoughts and feelings. But the underlying depression is very real. I wanted to show someone who is dealing with depression on an everyday basis. It’s not the main story of his life, but it’s always there. I feel that most novels that grapple with depression make it the main story, and focus on the discovery phase. I wanted to show someone who lives with it, and is fine. Trevor Project YAC: What advice would you give LGBTQ youth struggling in today’s society? David: Who was it who said “Don’t let the bastards get you down?” Shaw?
